Monitoring airbourne particles an NO.

The Praxis/OPCube from South Coast Science, just launched clearly meets market demand as the first production batch has already sold. It has proven popular with customers looking for monitoring of ONLY airborne particles (PM1, PM2.5 & PM10) and NO, where raw as well as corrected sensor data is available to customers for validation purposes.

Britain's upcoming Environment Bill is set to adopt the World Health Organisation target for PM2.5 as a legal limit in the country and the Praxis/OPCube is an ideal, low-cost monitoring instrument to aid with compliance. It is well suited for air quality screening applications during episodes of temporary construction, on fence lines or longer-term deployment in urban environments.

As with its big brother, thePraxis/Urbann, high-quality Alphasense sensors provide proven sensing technology. It can also be deployed in a high-density monitoring network using the same data infrastructure and sampling rates as the Praxis/Urban so that in terms of accuracy and reliability, the two devices operate in the same league.

The Praxis/OPCube has a single gas sensor combined with a particulate monitor, which is sufficient for most environmental health contexts. The obvious benefit for the construction industry or other urban monitoring applications is that customers do not pay for redundant functionality or infrastructure.

As with the Praxis/Urban, the units are designed to update remotely, meaning the device firmware stays current throughout its lifetime and therefore ongoing maintenance costs are minimal.

Air Velocity Sensor.

The EE680 air velocity sensor by E+E Elektronik is used to monitor the laminar flow in cleanrooms or on safety workbenches. The sensor precisely measures the air velocity up to 2 m/s (400 ft/min) and simultaneously also the temperature. It meets the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and is therefore ideally suited for the pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and microelectronics industries.

The flow sensing element used in the EE680 is based on the hot film anemometer principle and enables simultaneous measurement of air velocity and temperature. It provides accurate values from as low as 0.1 m/s (20 ft/min) and offers excellent long term stability and low angular dependence. The special E+E sensor coating makes the thin film sensing element highly resistant to H2O2 sterilisation and other aggressive cleaning agents.

Factory multi-point adjustment of the air velocity ensures high measurement accuracy over the entire working range. An adjustment point at 0.45 m/s (88.6 ft/min) takes into account the air flow range defined in the EU GMP directive for the manufacture of sterile medical devices. The measurement accuracy of the sensor is confirmed by an inspection certificate in accordance with DIN EN 10204-3.1.

With its smooth stainless steel enclosure and a sensor design optimised for laminar flow monitoring, the EE680 meets the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in the cleanroom. The straight or angled design of the sensor with different probe lengths allows for wall or ceiling mounting at the ideal distance from the filter element, according to EN ISO 14644-3. The practical mounting flange and M12 stainless steel connector facilitate the installation and replacement of the EE680.

An LED ring integrated into the enclosure indicates the laminar flow conditions and the sensor status. Any deviation from the target state or operating fault can therefore be quickly detected. The preset threshold values and further indication options can be configured individually.

The measured values for air velocity and temperature are optionally available at the analogue voltage or current output, or at the RS485 interface via the Modbus RTU protocol. The type of measured value output can also be retroactively configured. Configuring and adjusting the EE680 is a particularly user-friendly experience with the help of an optional adapter and the free configuration software.

• E+E Elektronik products are marketed in Ireland through Instrument Technology.

Flexible training ensures efficient operation and maintenance of critical systems.

A new global training programme aimed at supporting those responsible for operating and maintaining industrial data communications networks has been launched by Westermo.

Offering flexible online and in-person training, the Westermo Academy will provide certified courses to network engineers wherever they are located around the world, ensuring they have the expertise needed to maximise the performance and reliability of industrial networks.

Having the right knowledge and skills are key to the successful implementation, operation and maintenance of industrial data communications networks. However, not all companies have the necessary expertise available in-house. Industrial networking is constantly evolving to create more complex, resilient and secure networks, and with data networks often the backbone of mission-critical systems, it is essential for engineers to gain regular training updates.

“Westermo has provided certified training courses since 2014, with hundreds of engineers attending a course on-site or at one of our training facilities,” explained Fredrik Oskarsson, product manager services at Westermo. “The launch of the Westermo Academy is a significant enhancement of our existing training services, ensuring that our certified courses are available around the world, but also increasing the flexibility and availability of training.”

The Westermo Academy includes a flexible online learning platform that allows courses to be selected and attended according to the learner’s needs, location and own timetable. All existing courses have been refreshed, to ensure they include the most relevant and up-to-date information and are provided in the most logical and easy to grasp format. Training can be delivered online or on-site/offsite, initially in English, but in local languages in the near future. Many of the courses give attendees hands-on experience to help improve familiarity with, and the efficient operation of, Westermo devices.

The training courses are delivered by industrial data communications experts, who also have industry experience aligned with specific applications. Currently, there are four courses available, with  an ‘introduction to IP’ and an ‘introduction to WeOS’ providing a gateway to the certified engineer courses focused on switching and routing. Additional courses will be made available that have introduction, fundamental, intermediate, advanced and expert levels of content.

“With data networks now an essential part of most operations, it is critical to have the available expertise to maintain these networks and be able to respond immediately should there be an issue,” said Ant Lane, Westermo Academy instructor. “With the Westermo Academy, what we offer is real world experience and knowledge that can help on-site engineers find a quick and practical solution.”

Designed for one-handed use, the infrared inspection tools easily capture professional, high quality images of hot spots on machines and factory equipment, ensuring potential problems are caught before they lead to failures. Both the TiS55+ and TiS75+ provide a sharp, clear view of potential issues, and can be used by customers with no infrared imaging experience.

Jai Gandhi, Sales Program Manager at Fluke says: “The new TiS55+ and TiS75+ thermal imagers give maintenance teams the chance to move away from cumbersome clipboards and notebooks by adopting a wireless, one-step transfer of measurements. Quick and easy to use, the thermal imagers give customers the confidence to make maintenance decisions based on robust and traceable data, ensuring factory equipment can achieve maximum uptime.”

Able to store around 500 images, the TiS55+ and TiS75+ come with built-in personal assistants that organise captured images and offer increased functionality by enabling users to add their own information.

Key features include:
• Voice annotation – Users can record instant notes with up to 60 seconds of voice recording for each thermal image.
• IR-Photo Notes – Users can add visible light photos to the thermal image file and use those as a reference when analysing results.
• Asset Tagging – Users can scan a QR code on an asset to automatically organise and file thermal images. This eliminates data-entry errors by saving measurements directly from the camera and associating them with the asset record.

Offering extreme durability, the TiS55+ and TiS75+ thermal imagers are water and dust resistant (IP54) and have been engineered to withstand a two-meter drop. Both devices are powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, offering up to three and a half hours of continuous use. Users can also set their own colour alarms, setting a maximum or minimum temperature threshold to highlight a particular hot spot or area of interest.

The TiS55+ and TiS75+ include wireless connectivity, allowing users to easily connect with PCs and portable devices such as iPhones and iPads. To aid collaborations with other maintenance staff, measurement data can also be shared using ShareLive video calls and emails. Users can save time and improve the reliability of their maintenance data by wirelessly syncing measurements using the optional Fluke Connect system.

The equipment maintenance software allows assigning images to assets automatically (via asset ID from camera) or manually and allows creation of work orders and easy comparison between different measurement types, such as mechanical, electrical or infrared images. The Fluke TiS75+ offers even greater functionality. The wide field of view enable users to capture the full scene, even in tight spots. It can also record up to five minutes of radiometric video to get a picture of temperature variations over time.

In addition to alerting about hot spots, the TiS75+ thermal camera detects areas at risk of moisture damage using a new dew point calculation feature. Once dew point is calculated, the camera will display the Dew Point Colour Alarm. Everything the camera displays that is at the dew point temperature and below will display as a thermal image. Everything above will display as a visual light image. This allows users to easily identify where condensation is occurring, and a scale of how far objects are below the dew point.

Battery with long service life.

The new Li-Ion battery pack BP-LIO-1525 from Bicker Elektronik offers five times more charge / discharge cycles than conventional lead-acid batteries and thus guarantees a particularly long service life. The high-quality battery pack impresses both in industrial use and in medical technology applications with its approvals according to IEC / EN 62133-2: 2017 and UL 62133: 2017 Ed.2.

The BP-LIO-1525 has an integrated BMS (Battery Management System) to optimize service life and safety. The BMS monitors and controls the entire charging and discharging process for each battery cell in the energy storage system. The NTC temperature sensor, which is led outside, enables permanent monitoring of the Li-Ion cell temperature for charging optimization and operational safety.

In terms of system integration and economy (TCO), Lithium-Ion cells enable energy storage devices with space and weight savings of up to 75% - compared to conventional lead-acid batteries. Lithium is the lightest metal in the periodic table and has ideal electrochemical properties for providing high specific energy densities (Wh / kg). Also many times higher than with lead-acid batteries is the number of charging cycles and the realizable Depth of Discharge (DoD). Finally the service life under comparable operating conditions is up to five times longer.

With the help of the system present function, the output of the battery pack remains deactivated (output voltage = 0V) until the main current path is released by bridging the communication plug. Otherwise the BMS locks the MOSFET main switch permanently. Since the components on the BMS board run in standby mode, this power-saving function also increases the shelf life of the (charged) BP-LIO-1525.

The integrated cell balancing ensures a balanced and uniform charge of all cells, so that the full capacity of the lithium-ion battery pack remains permanently usable. This has a particularly positive effect on the service life, number of cycles and capacity of the energy storage.

Neuer Termin für verschobene Konferenz.

In English

Conference goes on-line.

Auf Deutsch

Originally, the iCC was planned as two-day conference in Baden-Baden (D). However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was postponed.

The 17th international CAN Conference (iCC) will now take place as an online conference from June 14 to June 17. Now, the iCC is scheduled on four half-days allowing people from Asia, Europe, and America to participate jointly at a convenient time. The program is intended to be the same as of the postponed conference. The most interesting topic is CAN XL, the third CAN data link layer generation. Of course, the speakers are updating their papers and some additional presentations are given, or if necessary new papers will be acquired. Besides CAN XL, there are a lot of other interesting topics covered by this conference.

The first iCC was held in 1994. “It is regarded as a technical high-level conference for CAN technology covering all OSI layers,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director and iCC program committee chair. “Who likes to discuss the latest information on CAN technology should attend this event.”

At the end of each conference day, there is a question and answer session provided, in which all speakers of the day are present. Unfortunately, the iCC is not accompanied by a tabletop exhibition. Therefore, is also no opportunity for informal talks as usually possible in the breaks. Alternatively, CiA offers the CiA CAN Coffee (C3) chat rooms for such informal meetings. These chat rooms can be used to discuss different topics, which are not in the official conference program. The possibility of private breakout chats is under consideration.

Early birds get a discount on the conference fee. CiA plans a supporting program with ‘open’ CiA technical group meetings and CiA webinars.

Miniature stepper-gearmotors and drive.

The new range of Micro Motors miniature stepper-gearmotors and a simple dipswitch-configured single-axis stepper drive are the latest new products from Mclennan.

The four stepper gearmotors each offer a wide choice of spur-gear reduction ratios for maximum application flexibility and combine with the user programmable drive to provide a competitively priced and compelling solution for basic motion control tasks. The easy-to-use drive features a choice step and direction input control or various emulated ‘brushless’ speed modes and will particularly suit OEMs and end-users that need uncomplicated and affordable position- or speed-based miniature power transmission control.

The innovative MM003AT/21-22 stepper motor drive requires an external 12 to 30 V DC or 12 to 24 V AC power supply and has dipswitch selectable current output of 160 mA or 330 mA. The corresponding motor torque and speed varies according to supply voltage and current settings. The PCB mounted drive features screw terminal strip connections for power and control signal inputs that include a 5 to 30V square wave signal for step/direction control as well as a clockwise/anticlockwise direction input - used in conjunction with a choice of 5V, 10V or 4…20 mA input levels for proportional speed control. An onboard trimmer is also available for acceleration/deceleration control in all modes. The dipswitch is used to select the various control modes as well as a select a fixed direction for the emulated ‘brushless’ speed modes. There is provision on the drive board for two sizes of motor connection. With dimensions of 33 x 33 x 14 mm and weight of 10 grams, the tiny drive is easily installed on the customers equipment with a single hole mounting.

Through the four stepper-gearmotor models, that cover a wide choice of gear reduction ratios, typical maximum holding-torque and speed specifications are up to 1500 mNm at 2 RPM and 220 mNm at 150 rpm. Variation in these specifications would be anticipated when used with the MM003AT/21-22 stepper drive and Mclennan are on hand to discuss specific applications and help with selection or other stepper drive solutions that may be more suitable for the customer’s application. Holding steady through 2021.

Endress+Hauser has weathered the crisis year 2020 in good shape. However, the Group’s consolidated sales fell – strongly influenced by exchange rate effects – by almost 3 percent to just under €2.6 billion. Even a strong laboratory business could only partially offset the shortfalls in process automation, which was hit harder by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.*

Bridging  the physical distance to customers in
the pandemic with digital & emotional proximity
.
While sales development last year fell well short of targets, the Group maintained profits at a strong level. “Endress+Hauser’s financial solidity has not suffered during the crisis,” emphasized Chief Financial Officer Dr Luc Schultheiss. The company was able to avoid short-time work and even slightly increased employment. At the end of 2020, Endress+Hauser had more than 14,400 employees worldwide, over 100 more than a year ago.

Endress+Hauser has always remained able to deliver despite the pandemic. “We have bridged the physical distance to our customers with digital and emotional proximity,” said Chief Executive Officer Matthias Altendorf. He sees the company as well equipped, even if the next few months continue to be dominated by the coronavirus crisis: “Our innovative strength is unbroken. Endress+Hauser will launch more product innovations in 2021 than ever before.”

The impact of the pandemic continues to affect individual market regions, customer industries and fields of activity very differently. Nevertheless, Endress+Hauser has made a good start to the current year. The Group expects growth in the single-digit percentage range in 2021 but sees profits under increased pressure. The company does not expect a fundamental recovery in the global economy until the end of the year.

Vibration testing of bolt connections.

TesT has launched the next generation of Junker testing machines with transverse displacement amplitude control. This new technology allows simulation of the conditions in the field even more realistically.

A bolted connection often bears a lot of responsibility: e.g. in railroad or aeronautical engineering. But what can it withstand and how long before it loosens? The Junker test has always been the preferred method to get the required answers for quality assurance. It is used in particular to measure the service life of a bolted connection under dynamic transverse load. But the established method still had its weaknesses.

Up to now, it has only been possible and standardized on a vibration test stand to adjust the transverse stroke without specimen before the test. During the test, however, the actual resulting stroke declined because the bolted connection was tightened. If the bolt then loosened during the test, the stroke continued to change.

In the field it is ultimately the forced transverse stroke that leads to the loosening of bolt connections. In order to enable a more differentiated test setup, the new TesT 208.200kN allows to control the transverse stroke in a closed loop as desired during the running test. The transverse displacement amplitude can be kept constant. Any desired ramps or other sequences can be simulated.

The product innovation already anticipates the new aviation standard ISO 16130, which describes amplitude regulation during the execution of experiments as preferred. It meets DIN 65151, DIN 25201-4, DIN 16130 and can be used to test all elements of bolt connections and locking systems. With the 208.200kN, TesT has further developed the Junker test decisively, setting new standards in the quality assurance of bolted joints.

Smart temperature.

Rugged field transmitter provides innovative functionality, improved measurement performance, and ease of use for applications in harsh environment conditions.

The iTEMP TMT142B, a new generation smart temperature transmitter with Bluetooth has been launched by Endress+Hauser. The transmitter delivers highly accurate and reliable measurements, wireless communication via Bluetooth, and user-friendly operation—all packaged in a robust single-chamber field housing. The technology offers significant improvements in process efficiency and plant availability while reducing costs.

In industrial process engineering applications, temperature transmitters are an important link between temperature sensors in the process and the higher levels of automation. Measurement instruments are often installed in difficult-to-access locations, which frequently makes commissioning, operation and servicing more difficult.

To address these and other issues, the transmitter features a highly secure integrated Bluetooth interface that enables users to wirelessly visualize measured values, NAMUR NE 017 diagnostic information, as well as perform configuration tasks. The device is extremely easy and fast to operate using your phone or tablet and the Endress+Hauser SmartBlue app. No special tools required. Access to the device is password-protected, and Endress+Hauser security provisions for Bluetooth communication complies with the highest standards.

The newly developed backlit display provides excellent readability under all environmental conditions, both in the dark and bright sunlight. Diagnostic messages are highlighted when the normally white background turns red.

The conversion of different sensor signals into a stable, standardized output signal (4 to 20 mA) represents a logistical challenge as it often requires multiple transmitter variations. To meet this challenge, the configurable single-channel device transmits converted signals from resistance sensors (RTD), thermocouples (TC), resistances (Ω) and voltage transmitters (mV) via the 4 to 20 mA signal or the HART 7 communication.

iTEMP TMT142B temperature transmitter is designed for safe operation in hazardous areas as certified by international approvals (ATEX, CSA C/US, IECEx). Safe operation is enhanced by the incorporation of an integrated overvoltage protection that protects the device from damage and permits continued functionality after common upset events.

Red, hot and humid? Finding out!

NASA’s Perseverance rover, launched in July 2020, is scheduled to land on Mars on the 18th February 2021. The Perseverance is carrying several scientific instruments on board, including Finnish-made humidity and pressure instrumentation.

All eyes will be on the sky with the Perseverance rover as it lands on Thursday. 18th February 2021. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has provided Perseverance with measurement instrumentation. Equipped with Vaisala’s sensors, FMI’s instrumentation will be used to provide accurate and reliable pressure and humidity measurements in the extreme conditions of Mars.*

On a quest to find answers
Landing on Mars will be a thrilling moment. The true test of success, however, will be the entire mission as the rover operates in the Red Planet’s extreme conditions. Perseverance will spend at least one Mars year, equal to around two Earth years, exploring the landing-site area.

The rover is expected to land on the ancient river delta in Jezero Crater, which is the optimal place to find traces of ancient life. To collect data and samples from the Red Planet, NASA is working together with a group of trusted scientific partners.

The FMI’s instrumentation is part of the Spanish-led consortium’s Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA). The MEDA instrumentation kit is basically a Martian weather station that takes a wide range of atmospheric measurements: temperature, wind speed and direction, pressure, relative humidity, and the amount and size of dust particles. Vaisala’s pressure and humidity sensors onboard Perseverance are similar, but more advanced, to those sent to Mars on the Curiosity rover in 2012.

“The rover’s equipment needs to operate in the harsh Martian environment, with very low pressure conditions and cold temperatures, and it must be able to resist possible global dust storms. In addition to the environmental aspects and potential dangers of the landing itself, the distance between Mars and Earth makes the mission challenging. There is no one to fix the instrumentation if something goes wrong,” says Maria Genzer, Head of Planetary Research and Space Technology Group at FMI.

Meteorological observation network on another planet When landing, the Perseverance and Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity will operate around 2000 km from each other. Together they will help create a small-scale atmospheric observation network on Mars. This is the first step towards the wider observation network being planned for Mars in the future.

“Mars and Earth are like rocky sisters. They both have seasonal variation, ice caps, similar declination of axis, length of day, and rocky consistency. Mars offers us a basic model of Earth – without vegetation, water, human life, cities, and other ‘noise’ we encounter on Earth,” says Genzer. “Interplanetary atmospheric research offers us tools to better understand our current habitat, and who knows what other findings there might be.”

“We are excited to provide our world-leading sensor technology to a Mars mission once again. Our accurate and durable HUMICAP® and BAROCAP® sensors will enable high-quality humidity and pressure data even on the Red Planet and lay the foundations for the atmospheric observation network on Mars,” says Samuli Hänninen, Vice President of Vaisala’s Products and Technologies.

The Mars 2020 mission is part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program. The Perseverance rover is designed to better understand the environmental conditions and geology of Mars and seek signs of ancient life. The mission will collect and store a set of rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth in the future.

Electric linear actuator.

Thomson Industries has launched the Electrak LL electric linear actuator, a long-life, high-duty-cycle component designed to work in the harshest conditions and offer superior environmental protection. In addition to having improved functionality dedicated to high duty cycle applications, the Electrak LL comes standard with all the performance, reliability and durability features that have made Thomson an industry leader in linear actuators.

With increased UV resistance capabilities, a long-life ball screw and nut assembly, and a long-life manual override design, the Electrak LL actuator is built to last. “The Electrak LL actuator is designed to deliver long life in harsh conditions and utilizes an improved sensor design that offers an integrated, robust solution to our customers. This new actuator is designed to last up to 600 kilometers, which is more than 10 times longer than the standard actuator,” said Anders Karlsson, Product Line Specialist – Linear Actuators at Thomson.

The load-bearing design of the Electrak LL electric actuator features two bearings to handle bidirectional load, as well as a built-in, brushless motor and motor drive system. This system provides constant speed regardless of the load and delivers the safety functionalities of the Thomson Electronic Monitoring Package. Eliminating the need for standalone controls, these integrated features provide constant monitoring of critical parameters such as end-of-stroke, voltage, current and temperature.

The actuator can withstand temperatures from -40° to +85°C (-40° to +185°F), and is CE and RoHS compliant, making it easier for operators to interact with and control operations, and providing a better user experience in all environments. Its coated, painted and sealed housing is rated to IP69K (static) and IP66 (dynamic) standards, meaning it resists corrosion from UV radiation, water jets, high-temperature/high-pressure washdowns and other forces.

Such high environmental resistance makes Electrak LL electric actuators ideal in outdoor applications such as pantographs, couplers, steps, access lifts and gravel bins. Standards and safety regulations for railway equipment can be very demanding and require rigorous testing to ensure compliance, and the Electrak LL was built to comply with railway standards EN 50155, EN 60077 and EN 45545.

Long-life actuators such as the Electrak LL are also valuable on the plant floor for high-duty cycle applications such as material handling and logistics operations. For example, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and logistics trains often run 24/7, exposing their components to excessive wear and tear, however, the durability of these actuators extends replacement intervals significantly.
