Servo drives.

Combine with IEC 61131-3 PLC and remote I/O system for completely integrated automation.

Applied Motion Products' newly launched DIN rail mountable AK series drives, now available through McLennan, offer a choice of open-loop stepper, closed-loop stepper, or full closed-loop servo motion control in a compact feature-rich package in combination with NEMA 11 to NEMA 34 frame motors operating from 24–48 VDC power. The AK series supports EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, CANopen, and Modbus communication interface options. Maximum precision and performance is assured with a battery-less 17-bit multi-turn absolute encoder that eliminates the need for homing routines and external position sensors, simplifying machine design. Launched at the same time as the AK StepSERVO series, AMP’s MCA6 PLC and MET2 I/O system combine to offer complete machine integration for applications ranging from compact bench-top equipment to larger industrial machinery.

The AK drive series operates in combination with AMP’s Q-Programming software for basic to advanced motion and machine control whilst the new Stepper Suite II software covers USB-C setup for online or offline parameter configuration with an integrated oscilloscope providing real-time monitoring, and a smart fault diagnosis feature that includes corrective actions that can minimize commissioning and downtime. Further features of the AK StepSERVO series include a secondary encoder input that can be used with a load located linear encoder to ensure maximum accuracy for gantry- and linear stage-based mechanical systems. A SIL3 certified STO (Safe Torque Off) provides machine safety compliance, and the drive includes built-in brake control functionality.

Fieldbus interface options include EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP. EtherCAT includes CoE (CAN over EtherCAT) and FoE (File over EtherCAT) with distributed clocks for ultra-precise multi-axis motion and sensor synchronisation. EtherNet/IP supports 14+ add-on instructions for application-specific control integration. Both versions include a compliment of 6-in and 3-out configurable I/O.

In addition, the two new companion platforms launched by AMP offer maximum flexibility for machine builders and automation engineers: the MCA6 Motion PLC is a compact controller that combines machine and motion control from an ARM-based processor with support for PLCopen and IEC 61131-3 programming standards with a device capacity of up to 64 EtherCAT motion axes and 128 other EtherCAT devices. The MET2 I/O system, also EtherCAT-based, is a modular distributed platform that supports up to 32 digital, analogue and temperature sensor modules. Together, these three platforms are designed to operate as an integrated stack; the MCA6 for centralised control, the MET2 for distributed I/O, and the AK Series for multi-axis motion that is capable of advanced motion and machine control including electronic cam, interpolation, synchronisation, and robotic functions - all three systems are unified through a common software environment and shared industrial networking protocol.

Motion control and PLC.

The new Trio Motion-PLC series, availablle from Mclennan, offers a powerful solution as an EtherCAT servo controller for synchronised motion with PLC integrated machine control. As a perfect fit for Mclennan’s motion system design and build service the new Motion-PLC is offered in three model configurations with feature enabled codes (FECs) that competitively address low- to medium-axis count requirements for applications from simple point-to-point positioning systems to complex, tightly synchronised multi-axis stand-alone machines. An integrated slice interface and dedicated expandable digital and analogue I/O slice modules complete the system with programming via IEC61131-3 or TrioBASIC and Trio’s Function Blocks software.

Trio’s Motion-PLC range combines MCS series motion controllers and MS series I/O slice modules. The MCS-30 offers up to 4 motion axes with simple control for point-to-point positioning whilst the MCS 40, along with the higher-performance MCS 50, are 'Flexible Machine Controllers' that will address more complex axis-and machine-synchronised tasks. With the capability for rapid machine development, all MCS series servo controllers feature a slice interface that facilitates seamless integration of Trio’s MS I/O system which supports up to 16 variously configured slice modules of 16 digital inputs or outputs, or blocks of 4 analogue inputs or outputs. Trio’s MS I/O slice modules can also connect to an EtherCAT coupler for flexible integration. The DIN-rail front mounted system features spring clamp connectors with push-button removal that make wiring fast, facilitating quick and flexible machine set-up.

MCS series motion controllers are based on the ARM Cortex A55 processor with a 600MHz clock frequency and 64-bit position register precision for exceptional motion and machine synchronisation, and motion cycle times to 1 ms. The multitasking operating system includes a comprehensive motion library, offering capabilities such as electronic gearbox, axis to axis interpolation, mathematical functions and I/O interaction. Programming is efficiently accomplished using the TrioBASIC motion language or IEC61131 standards. Setup and diagnostics are facilitated through Trio’s Motion Perfect software. The MCS-40 and -50 also supports Uniplay, Modbus TCP, PROFINET IO, and Ethernet/IP protocols. Software tools are available for cam profile generation, robotic kinematic transformations and CAD path conversion, further supporting minimum application development timescales.

This versatile motion control system ensures seamless integration with Trio’s DX series distributed servo drives covering power ranges from 50W to 7.5kW in a choice of three model variants. Complete standalone machine operation can also be realised with Trio’s UNIPLAY HMI 7” and 10” colour touch screen displays.

Integrated servomotors.

As part of its new generation MAC series, JVL’s MAC404 features completely revised software and redesigned hardware that together elevate performance, efficiency and adaptability, as well as reduce cost in industrial automation. Available with full application support from Mclennan in Britain, this new model will deliver 400 W power with 1200 W peak in a compact 63x63 mm frame, and with a new absolute multi-turn encoder, will sustain a 100% duty cycle and 24/7 operation for unlimited production down-time.

A built-in industrial Ethernet interface with six protocols offers seamless PLC integration with major PLC producers. A wide choice of options including built in brake, IP67 protection, STO connector with SoE, wireless comms’ interfacing, CANopen, IO Link, and more combine to make the MAC404 an excellent selection for a wide range of automation applications.

The new MAC404 is powered from 115 or 230 VAC (optional 48 VDC). With motor speeds to 3000 rpm (3600 max.), rated torque is 1.27 Nm with 3.83 peak. The machine distributed, integrated drive and controller design eliminates the need for large control cabinets.

Through the MAC404 series, models available cover IP42 and IP66 housings with and without fitted brakes - with overall lengths of 170 mm and 203 mm respectively. With only power and communication connections to manage through industry standard M12 connectors, the integrated servomotor offers reduced commissioning effort, cost and time. Miniature linear actuators.

The MLA series miniature linear positioning actuators from Applied Motion Products (AMP) are based around NEMA 11, 14, 17 and 23 frame stepper motors and can be configured as motor-only open-loop variants or supplied complete with the USA-based motion control leader’s StepSERVO™ integrated motors as all-in-one programmable closed-loop linear motion positioning solutions with optional network communication. Available from Mclennan, AMP’s European distribution partner, these very compact linear actuators have leadscrew or rolled ballscrew mechanics or, where improved backlash is required, a patented Constant Force™ leadscrew option featuring a self-adjusting polymer nut arrangement. A comprehensive choice of options covering motor and motion control system, fitted brakes and encoders, precision grade, and working stroke make the MLA series extremely customisable.

The four MLA actuator models cover stroke lengths from 10 mm up to 300 mm in both leadscrew and ballscrew driven variants. Through the range, the choice of leadscrew and ballscrew pitches offered allow the user to select the best combination for speed vs. resolution with maximum rates up to 100 mm/sec achievable for the largest size. The smallest MLA20 actuator with its NEMA 11 frame motor has a width of 22 mm and a height over the carriage of just under 25 mm. The largest MLA42 model, based on the NEMA23 frame stepper, has a width of 62 mm and height over the carriage of 35.5mm. The maximum load capacity for this model is based on the leadscrew/ballscrew pitch with a maximum of 7 kg horizontal and 4.4 kg vertical.

The StepSERVO versions of the MLA actuator range are available on the three larger models. This proven closed-loop stepper technology with its integrated motor drive, programmed control, and optional networking provides a decentralised solution for positioning systems with benefits of reduced machine installation cost through minimised machine wiring, faster machine build and design time and an Industry 4.0 attuned control concept. These ‘Smart’ actuators are available with a wide choice of control options including step/direction, +/- 10V DC for torque/velocity and positioning. AMP’s Q programming software takes care of streaming commands and includes maths and machine I/O control functions. Options for StepSERVO include RS232 or RS485, Modbus RTU and CANopen communications as well as EtherNet/IP and Power over Ethernet (PoE). StepSERVO technology is of course also available in a wide range of separate integrated motors with all of these options in NEMA 11 to 34 frame sizes.

Stepper motor controller.

The JVL SMC66 is a separate stepper motor controller aimed at applications where size restraints, high ambient temperatures, harsh environmental conditions or vacuum operation may preclude the use of the globally leading motion control manufacturer’s trademark integrated stepper motors is now available through McLennon. With all the features of JVL’s integrated ServoStepTM drive and motion control technology, albeit without the stepper motor, the SMC66 delivers precision control for small motors from NEMA frame sizes 08 to 34 - with current ratings up to 6 Amps. Closed-loop control from absolute multiturn and incremental encoders as well as external SSI encoder support is included as standard along with RS485 and a built-in ePLC™ for eight configurable digital or analogue I/Os.

Through a compelling choice of options, multi-axis support is covered with multi–Industrial Ethernet comms’ via a built-in Ethernet switch, CANopen, IO-Link and wireless comms’ via Profinet, Ethernet/IP, or Modbus TCP.

The IP42 rated SMC66 measures just 104 x 45 x 54.5 mm (l x w x h) with 4-hole plate mounting so is easily installed or adapted for higher level environmental protection with added cover protection. For vacuum and harsh environment motion tasks, Mclennan can advise on installation design, and from its distribution partnership with Phytron the German motor specialist, supply harsh industrial, vacuum and UHV, cryogenic and space rated stepper motors. A DIN rail adapter is optionally available for installation convenience. An open PCB version of the SMC66 is also available for OEM integration.

Depending on the version, up to six M12 connectors cover motor, encoder, and I/O including dual M12’s for daisy chaining drive-to-drive. The SMC66 can be optionally supplied with a separate STO connector and equipped for SoE Safety over Ethernet. The drive is powered from a separate 12-80 VDC supply, and its ultra-high step resolution provides up to 409,600 steps/rev with a speed resolution down to ±0.01 RPM. Real-time adjustment allows speed, torque, acceleration, target position and many other parameters may be changed "on-the-fly” in synchronisation with the compliment of eight freely configured 24V DC digital I/O or 0-5V (12bit) analogue inputs with advanced filtering.

The optional Ethernet support covers all main protocols including Profinet, EtherNet/IP, SERCOS, EtherCAT, Powerlink and ModbusTCP/UDP with JVL’s MacTalk® software enabling the user to seamlessly swap protocols via an integrated Ethernet switch. Other options for multi-axis motion tasks include DMX512 digital comms’ for the entertainment/lighting industries as well as Bluetooth and the Zigbee low power network. All of the numerous bus and comms’ options available are supported with cables and connectors in various lengths for seamless multi-axis integration.

Whilst the SMC66 can operate without encoders, the drive supports a wide range of absolute multiturn and incremental encoder types, allowing position verification for precision positioning tasks through semi-closed-loop or full closed-loop control with JVL’s PA0260 encoder PCB. For PC or IPC based applications, an ActiveX/OCX driver is available allowing interfacing to LABview, Excel, VB or other Windows-programs.

Miniature size integrated servomotor.

Applied Motion Products Inc. (AMP) has expanded its TSM StepSERVO™ integrated motor line with a brand new, truly miniature, NEMA 8 frame model – the USA based motion control leader’s smallest all-in-one closed loop servo motor, drive and controller combination. Available with full support from Mclennan, the TSM08X3L-R is perfectly suited to distributed, space-constrained motion control applications, delivering higher accuracy, acceleration and torque than open-loop stepper motor-based solutions with much improved energy efficiency. Measuring just 61 mm in length with a 16 mm square face mounting and 20 mm square frame the diminutive motion solution features several different external control modes and built-in I/O as well as programmable on-board memory for maximum application flexibility.

Powered from an external 24 VDC supply the TSM08 delivers 0.05 Nm holding torque and a 30% torque boost capability (0.5 seconds) whilst a 16-bit magnetic, single turn absolute encoder has a 20000 pulse per rev resolution for a static positioning accuracy of up to ±0.018°. Real-time position correction provides improved dynamic accuracy. Operating modes for this all-in-one motion solution cover dual RS-485 ports for configuration, programming and daisy-chain networking for Modbus RTU as well as communication with PLCs and HMIs. The TSM08 also features stand-alone capability using AMP’s Q programming software with pre-programmed command sequences stored in non-volatile memory for motion, I/O, conditional processing, multi-tasking, math functions, and more. A complement of 4 high-speed (1 MHz) digital inputs and 2 digital outputs (5-24 VDC) may be utilised for connecting pulse & direction signals, end-of-travel limit switches, quadrature encoder signals, PLC outputs, sensors, or other signal types.

The TSM08X3L-R is available in two versions: a single connector model or multi connector model (power, I/O and communications) – the latter simplifies daisy chaining and Modbus RTU set-ups. Configuring the TSM integrated motor is made easy using AMP’s StepSERVO Quick Tuner package which is built into the Q Programming software. Compatible power and daisy chaining cables make for straightforward commissioning and Mclennan are on hand to add compatible motion and automation controls, precision gear units or other ancillary components where required.

AMP’s TSM series StepSERVO integrated motors are also available in larger frame sizes from NEMA size 11 to 34 packages with torque output up to 8 Nm, motor speeds up to 3600 rpm and encoder resolutions of 20,000 counts/rev. A wide selection of control and interfacing options including Ethernet, EtherNet IP and CANopen as well as the above-mentioned facilities make the range suitable for a very wide range of motion control applications.

Joint actuators.

Servotecnica SpA, available through McLennan, has several years’ experience in customised design and manufacture of its SVTM series rotary actuators. Aimed at the specific requirements for high precision manipulation robotics manufacturers, these mechatronic rotary joints integrate a brushless servomotor, a high-resolution absolute encoder, and a zero-backlash harmonic gear unit in a compact package that typically features a hollow shaft to facilitate through wiring, slip ring assemblies or other essential system services.

Recently the Italian motion component and systems manufacturer developed two new cost-effective standard versions of its SVTM series in 118- and 153-mm diameter package sizes that offer nominal output torques of 33 Nm and 49 Nm respectively, both are equipped with a 19 bits resolution BiSS-C protocol absolute encoder. Available with full application support from Mclennan, the new standard SVTM 70 and 105 mechatronic joints cover a wide selection of the industry’s most commonly specified requirements and have been designed for further customisation for output torque and encoder type.

The smaller SVTM 78 series mechatronic joint features a brushless servomotor with a nominal speed of 3300 rpm at 48 VDC and a 50:1 ratio harmonic gearbox. The complete package with its BISS-C absolute encoder has a peak output torque of 73 Nm and, with a 118 mm diameter and nominal length of just over 101 mm includes a 12 mm through hole. The higher powered SVTM 105 provides a peak torque of 115 Nm. With its larger diameter motor and 50:1 ratio gear unit, this compact 158 mm diameter x 100.5 mm long housing features a 20 mm diameter through hole. Both models are IP65 sealed with waterproof connectors throughout.

Customisation includes alternative resolution absolute encoders - up to 22 bits in BISS and SS protocols as well as incremental, SPI or asynchronous encoder types. Optional gear unit ratios are available with potentially increased overall package length. Robotic system machine builders and OEMs can complement these rotary joints with Servotecnica’s own range of SVTS-A series slip ring assemblies – available in a wide choice of signal/power circuits.

Servomotor has Ethernet.

The JVL A/S MAC1004 integrated servomotor, available through Mclennan, is set to offer a new level of performance, efficiency and flexibility for precision motion control in industrial automation. As part of a new generation MACmotor® range, the MAC1004 sports a completely new software and hardware design and delivers 1kW of continuous servo power and a 3kW peak rating in a compact 80x80 mm motor size. With increased efficiency and a 100% duty cycle rating, its wide choice of six built-in Industrial Ethernet options and faster processor combines with a new absolute multi-turn encoder that makes the MAC1004 a compelling choice for almost any application.

The motor is directly powered from 115 or 230 VAC (optional 320 VDC) and as a standalone integrated servo motor allows machine builders the benefit of much reduced machine wiring in addition to fewer or smaller control cabinets in a typical setup. With only power and communication connections to manage, distributed systems also offer reduced commissioning effort and time.

The MAC1004 supports six Industrial Ethernet options including EtherCat, Profinet, and Ethernet IP with daisy-chain connection. Wireless Profinet, EtherNet IP and Modbus are further options along with IO-Link, CANopen and other commonly used comms’ interfaces. Rather than using individual modules for these options, as in previous integrated motor models, the new design is based around built-in options - reducing production cost and streamlining selection, with savings passed on to the customer.

Further controller design improvements have led to higher motor efficiency and a faster, more advanced processor enables precise and smooth motion control for superior production throughput. With its 100% duty cycle operation, the MAC1004 is well suited to use high-demand automation applications. Furthermore, a new battery free, self-powered, state-of-the-art absolute encoder is available for long-life and zero-maintenance operation. It can also be optionally supplied with an STO connector and equipped for SoE Safety over Ethernet, internal brake, IP67 protection and a choice of M12 or M16 connectors for harsh environments.

Integrated servo drives.

The new MDX+ series servo drives from Applied Motion Products Inc. (AMP), combine a high torque-density and low rotor-inertia brushless motor, absolute encoder, drive stage and motion controller in a single integrated, 24 – 60V DC-powered package. The drives are available, on this side of the Atlantic from Mclennan, in 40-, 60- and 80-mm frame sizes covering a power range from 100 to 550 W. With a new highly efficient servo drive design the MDX+ has exceptional heat management that keeps the motors running cool. 
A wide selection of control preferences include pulse train, RS-485, CANopen, and EtherCAT along with optional E-stop, dynamic braking and STO (SIL3). Aimed at distributed precision motion control tasks where torque/force, velocity and/or positioning is required, the compact MDX+ will replace stand-alone motor and drive systems with simpler installation through reduced machine wiring, whilst straightforward commissioning is ensured via user-friendly software, including auto-tuning, oscilloscope, and mechanical analysis functions. The integrated drives offer a compelling solution for applications such as packaging machinery, medical equipment, robotics, AGVs and more.

In terms of performance, MDX+ integrated drives deliver superb precision control thanks to the combination of its high 17-bit encoder resolution encoder (131,072 feedback pulses per revolution) and low cogging servo motor characteristics. An optional absolute encoder is available with battery backup to ensure position storage and no loss of position in case of power failure. The MDX+ has a 300% peak torque capability providing extra performance for acceleration and deceleration (the 550 W version has a 400% peak torque specification). A built-in electromagnetic brake is also available.

Field bus options for the MDX+ include CANopen, Modbus/RTU and EtherCAT. In particular EtherCAT offers high speed communication which supports high precision multi-axis synchronisation for optimal production throughput. EtherNet/IP and Profinet options are also planned for the near future. Streaming commands or analogue control from PCs and PLCs is also offered whilst AMP’s ‘Q’ programming multi-tasking language, in combination with on-board I/O, includes conditional processing, maths and other high-level motion related functions. User friendly USB multi-axis commissioning software includes powerful oscilloscope functions with mechanical analysis to determine best performance with notch filters to combat machine resonance.

The new MDX+ is a flexible all-in-one motion solution with a wide range of features and option to suit the widest range of applications. From an environment perspective, MDX+ integrated drives are available in IP20 or waterproof and dustproof IP65 versions. Machine safety to IEC61508 and ISO138491(PL e) is assured through hardware level Safe Torque Off (STO), and dynamic braking ensures the motor stops with the fastest speed in combination with a dedicated emergency stop. Protective functions built into the drive include over voltage, over current and over temperature protection with status LEDs. Novel servo motors range.

A new servo motor line for high-throughput and cost-effective motion control.

A new line of cost-effective servo motors from Applied Motion Products is aimed at high-throughput precision motion tasks from 100 W to 3 kW with rated torque to 11 Nm and speeds to 6000 rpm. Available with comprehensive technical support in Britain and Europe from Mclennan, the M5 series’ novel magnetic design yields high-power density and low cogging torque and is available in choice of low-, medium-, and high-inertia options that facilitate motion profile matching for optimised performance.

A choice of several base models in 40 mm through 130 mm frame sizes include a choice of absolute magnetic or absolute optical encoders with resolution to 23-bits, enabling precise position control and smooth motion. The M5 servo motors’ 300% overload torque capability allows high throughput acceleration performance and integral brake options are available throughout the series. 

Mclennan supplies AMP’s compatible AC servo motor drives with 220 VAC single- or three-phase input and output capability to 13 A continuous/45 A peak. Various models support motion control through optional RS-485, CANopen, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP and Profinet protocols. All M5 motors are IP65 rated for water and dust resistance and are UL and CE recognised. 

The M5 series, which features plug-in power and encoder connectors, is made complete with a wide choice of motor power and encoder cables in varying standard or custom lengths for straightforward installation. Intefacing and electrical customisation is available on request.

Engineering an upside-down lighthouse.

Some four years ago, Mclennan designed and suppled a novel custom motion system to drive the historic 5,000 kg rotating Fresnel lens lantern on the unmanned Tory Island (Toraigh) lighthouse – located nine miles north-west off the coast of County Donegal (IRL). The project, now successfully completed for the Commissioners for Irish Lights, was part of a trial to improve and lower energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint across the entire network of lighthouses that help protect shipping and mariners navigating the Irish coast and islands. Mclennan’s motion system was a part of extensive engineering upgrade work that replaced the Tory Island lighthouse’s decades old lantern rotation mechanics but maintained the technological heritage of the original Fresnel lens that dates over 100 years. Now, as Irish Lights continues work to improve the energy efficiency and environmental footprint of all of its heritage lighthouses, Mclennan, in a partnership with the Co. Kildare (IRL) based automation specialist Amon Electronics Ltd, has completed similar engineering upgrades to two more lighthouses on Rathlin island (Reachlainn) which, incidentally, is famed for its puffin population.

Mclennan, prides itself on providing a “motion partnership” service to its customers. More than system integration, this often involves technical consultancy and development at a pre-project phase to enable feasibility studies, evaluate appropriate technologies and investigate ballpark costs. For the remotely located and non-mains powered Tory Island project, Mclennan was involved at a very early stage with the Commissioners of Irish Lights engineers to develop a cost-effective solution. The specified requirements included battery powered, dual-redundant, servo gearmotors and automation controls to drive the six-metre-high lantern optics via a three-metre diameter geared slewing ring. Throughout the project Mclennan passed its expertise to the project’s main contractors, Amon Electronics, in a new motion partnership. 

For the Rathlin East and West lighthouses, Mclennan supplied similar motion systems to the original at Tory Island. Interestingly, the West lighthouse has a unique ‘upside down’ configuration as well as a distinctive, red-tinted lantern to enable its use in an area that is exceptionally prone to sea fog. Similar in size and scale to the Tory Island lantern, environmental improvements for the Rathlin lighthouses meant replacing high energy 1000W lamps with 70W LEDs whilst maintaining the original heritage Fresnel lenses. Whilst the Tory Island lighthouse had no mains electrical power and required the installation of solar PV and battery power and low voltage DC operation for the drives, Rathlin Island has mainland connected power. Although this made the motion system requirements somewhat less stringent, Rathlin’s environmental upgrade entailed that backup diesel generators were removed and replaced with batteries. Consequently, this called for a similar high efficiency battery powered drive system in the event that power from the mainland might fail.

Although the Rathlin lighthouses have new ball-race bearing systems that replaced out-dated mercury bath bearings as well as upgraded slewing rings for improved efficiency, the huge load inertia of the lantern optics and its acceleration and continuous rotation speed provided a formidable challenge for the gearmotor specifications. As a solution, that had proven efficient and reliable for the Tory Island upgrade, Mclennan specified a 24/48V DC powered brushless, integrated 400 W servo drive from its distribution partner JVL Industri Elektronik A/S. The packaged solution included encoder feedback, RS485 communications and a programmable motion controller. With its integral power supply, this very compact decentralised solution both reduced wiring and suited the limited installation space in the lighthouse tower. To ensure the torque and speed required to drive the lantern and to mitigate the very large moment of inertia presented by the slewing gear arrangement, Mclennan specified two inline-connected planetary gear units to provide a nominal output speed of 14 rpm. The combined gear ratios’ torque magnification factor and reflected inertia reduction was more than sufficient to comfortably drive the lantern optics at its desired speed of 60 to 300 seconds per rotation. The short-term motor current and torque load during acceleration of the lantern and the much lower continuous current at running speed proved well inside the power requirements specified for prolonged use from the possible backup battery supply scenario.

As part of the redundancy back-up requirements, each gearmotor included a free-wheeling clutch integrated into its output stage. With one drive powered at any time, the second unpowered drive could idle. The Mclennan supplied control cabinet included a programmed ARM microcontroller that took care of functions such as motor performance and acceleration timing, battery condition and related I/O processes, as well as the management of the slewing ring’s gear lubrication delivery system. The microcontroller also managed the motion systems’ redundancy through the detection of any failure of the primary motor drive - then energising the secondary drive. The cabinet included visual indicators for critical functions. A connected telemetry system, supplied separately, relays information from the control panel to the mainland. Mclennan developed the control panel the for the Tory Island project and included a C++ diagnostic and commissioning front-end which was passed to Amon Electronics and is used by Irish Lights for maintenance.

Amon Electronics and Mclennan completed work on the Rathlin Island lighthouses and there are many other Irish Lights lighthouse upgrade projects in preparation. Several of these are without mains power and will consequently require the Tory Island self-sufficient electrical model. The Rathlin lighthouses were originally commissioned in 1856 and 1919 respectively, both retain their historic first order Fresnel lenses and with the removal of mercury material and diesel generators, have much improved the safety and reduced the environmental impact of these important facilities for several generation to come. Other modification improvements under consideration include replacing the stand-alone RS485 programmed intelligent drives with Ethernet interfaced alternatives so that real-time information can be easily relayed for preventative maintenance, improved safety and other enhanced control possibilities.

Drive systems for transportation & mobility.

Gefeg-Neckar Antriebssysteme GmbH is a drive systems expert for transportation machinery and materials handling equipment applications in mobility, medical, logistics and many other branches of industry. The German designer and manufacturer, represented in Britain by motion specialist Mclennan, includes a custom designed drive systems capability specifically aimed at integration on Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs). 

Supplied as complete Vulkollan™ equipped wheel assemblies with mechanical interfacing adapters, these modular systems include brushless DC geared motors, feedback encoders, optional dynamic or holding brakes - and are supplied with integrated on-board motor controls or for use with external motor controls and optional Safe Torque Off (STO).

Extensively used in production and warehousing settings for transportation, loading and retrieval of pallets, crates, boxes, and components etc., all types of AGVs can be equipped with Gefeg-Neckar’s drives up to a maximum power of 1.5 kW. Powerful brushless DC motors provide maximum efficiency for battery operated AGVs as well as extended life with low maintenance. With load carrying capability per wheel up to 1000 kg, three outline drive models are available for customisation with the nominal wheel diameter between 160 and 230 mm. These are variously equipped with 24 or 48 VDC geared motors with maximum torque output of approximately 16, 27 and 88 Nm, and respective maximum speeds of 244, 182 and 78 rpm. This equates to nominal AGV cart speeds of 2.0, 1.5 and 0.9 m/sec respectively. The modularly designed models can be flexibly adapted to match application specifics with alternative gear unit technologies (planetary, worm and spur), adjusted motor characteristics and tailored componentry to suit the performance required. For medical or high hygiene environments, stainless steel motor, gear unit and hardware versions are available.

Smart actuators control.

A new line of linear actuators complete with StepSERVO™ equipped integrated motors has been released by Applied Motion Products Inc. (AMP) as all-in-one linear positioning solutions including drive electronics and controls, housing and bearing support. Available from Mclennan, their European distribution partner, the new StepSERVO Smart Actuators are variously available with NEMA 11, 14, 17 or 23 frame motors configured with built-in ball or lead screw mechanics.

The MLA and MCB series are moving carriage designs whilst the MLT series is a pushrod-style actuator. AMP’s well proven StepSERVO™ technology combines a digital closed-loop servo drive, encoder feedback and several options for motion control and communications in a single integrated package that delivers more torque, acceleration, speed, accuracy, and efficiency over conventional open-loop stepper motor systems.

These new compact and space saving actuators are based around AMP’s wide range of Screw Motors - hybrid stepper motors where the standard motor shaft is replaced with a lead screw assembly. MLA- and MCB-Smart series linear actuators feature an extruded aluminium rail and support system with a moving load carrying carriage. These versions are available in NEMA frame motor sizes 11, 14 and 23. Users can choose various ball/lead screw pitches and nut material options with leads from 1 to 10 mm to suit their positioning resolution and speed requirements – speeds up to 100 mm/sec are available. The largest actuator, with its 23-frame motor, has a maximum stroke of 250 mm and a maximum load capacity of 7 kg horizontal and 4.4 kg vertical. The direct integration of the screw into the motor allows a coupling-free design that saves space for a more compact solution. The MCB version includes a dust seal and fully shrouded motor whilst the lower cost MLA offers is an open-frame housing design for use in clean environments. Both version include mounting fixtures.

The MLT series pushrod style actuator is also based around the AMP’s Screw Motors in NEMA 11 or 17 frame sizes. Well suited for miniature push, pull, lift, and press applications, a choice of lead screw or ball screw mechanics provides users with a wide scope of cost vs. performance options. The largest MLT actuator can deliver a thrust force up to 300 N and speeds to 250 mm/sec with low vibration and low noise operation. AMP’s Screw Motors are available as separate components without StepSERVO for use with independent drives and controls.

These new StepSERVO™ Smart actuators utilise AMP’s closed-loop stepper technology for direct on-board motor drive, programming, and optional networking. This decentralised approach sees benefits in reduced installation cost through minimised machine wiring, faster machine build and design time and a control concept that is complementary to Industry 4.0. The new Smart actuators are available with a wide choice of control options including step/direction, +/- 10V DC torque/velocity and positioning as well as AMP’s Q Programming which provides streaming commands with maths and machine I/O control functions. RS232 or RS485, Modbus RTU and CANopen communications are on hand as well as EtherNet/IP and Power over Ethernet(PoE). The 23 frame StepSERVO can be supplied with absolute encoder feedback. AMP’s StepSERVOs are also available as separate integrated motors with these options in NEMA frame sizes from 11 to 34.

Integrated stepper motors with wireless.

JVL Industri Elektronik has recently added a Wireless Industrial Ethernet communication option to its ServoStep™ integrated stepper motor series.

Application areas include battery powered AGVs , remotely operated machinery, theatre & stage automation systems etc, or where motion control from a tablet or mobile phone is required.

Available with full support from Mclennan, their British distribution partner, the new wireless option supports Profinet, EtherNet/IP and ModbusTCP/UDP protocols and is available across its MIS and MIL series integrated motors in NEMA sizes 17 and 43, offering output torques from 0.3 to 25 Nm. Industrial Ethernet brings added application flexibility for machine builders and OEMs and this option is particularly useful where wireless control is preferred or necessary for autonomous motion tasks.

JVL’s ServoStep integrated stepper motors combine a microstepping motor and drive with motion controls and a variety of interfacing and comms’ modules in a single compact unit. The single package integrated motor solution makes wiring straightforward and significantly reduces installation costs, and furthermore provides much better electrical noise protection compared to cabinet housed drives with long noise-prone, motor power and control cable runs. The same ‘built-in technology is applied to JVL’s wide range of integrated servo motors – also available from Mclennan.

ServoStep’s feature a Hall-sensor and an encoder in a proprietary control technology that produces higher torque and precision compared to open loop stepper motors. Options are available with rare-earth rotor magnets that produce up to 40% more torque in same housing size. Motor power through the range spans from 50 to 400 W with speeds up to 3000 rpm and a step resolution of 0.01 revs. An absolute multiturn encoder option boosts positioning resolution up to 409,600 counts per rev. Automatic current-control reduces heating and the quiet motor performance suits noise sensitive applications. The ServoStep MIS series is already available with wired Industrial Ethernet, which is compatible with all major Ethernet protocols - meeting the requirements for IIoT and Industry 4.0 with further options including STO SIL3 for machine safety. A built-in e-PLC™ with eight digital I/O points, or analogue inputs, adds additional application functionality.

Configuration, programming, and communication diagnostics is made straightforward with JVL’s MacTalk® PC application software which includes a graphical programming environment and a wide selection of motion control commands and machine I/O interaction functions.

Their new Wireless Industrial Ethernet option can equally accommodate use with an antenna equipped PLC or a wireless access point for long range communications. MacTalk takes care of set-up with a range of commands including SSID, encryption and credentials as well as signal strength. Two selectable operation modes are available: Station Client, which establishes wireless point to point control of individual antenna equipped integrated motors, and Access Point that allows a number of wirelessly-controlled motors to each be hard-wired to other ServoStep motors through a secondary Ethernet connection. Station Client mode is used where multi-axis synchronisation is not an issue, and Access Point mode should include a managed Ethernet switch of industrial grade in the wireless network topology for best axis and machine I/O synchronisation.

Miniature stepper-gearmotors and drive.

The new range of Micro Motors miniature stepper-gearmotors and a simple dipswitch-configured single-axis stepper drive are the latest new products from Mclennan.  

The four stepper gearmotors each offer a wide choice of spur-gear reduction ratios for maximum application flexibility and combine with the user programmable drive to provide a competitively priced and compelling solution for basic motion control tasks. The easy-to-use drive features a choice step and direction input control or various emulated ‘brushless’ speed modes and will particularly suit OEMs and end-users that need uncomplicated and affordable position- or speed-based miniature power transmission control.

The innovative MM003AT/21-22 stepper motor drive requires an external 12 to 30 V DC or 12 to 24 V AC power supply and has dipswitch selectable current output of 160 mA or 330 mA. The corresponding motor torque and speed varies according to supply voltage and current settings. The PCB mounted drive features screw terminal strip connections for power and control signal inputs that include a 5 to 30V square wave signal for step/direction control as well as a clockwise/anticlockwise direction input - used in conjunction with a choice of 5V, 10V or 4…20 mA input levels for proportional speed control. An onboard trimmer is also available for acceleration/deceleration control in all modes. The dipswitch is used to select the various control modes as well as a select a fixed direction for the emulated ‘brushless’ speed modes. There is provision on the drive board for two sizes of motor connection. With dimensions of 33 x 33 x 14 mm and weight of 10 grams, the tiny drive is easily installed on the customers equipment with a single hole mounting.

Through the four stepper-gearmotor models, that cover a wide choice of gear reduction ratios, typical maximum holding-torque and speed specifications are up to 1500 mNm at 2 RPM and 220 mNm at 150 rpm. Variation in these specifications would be anticipated when used with the MM003AT/21-22 stepper drive and Mclennan are on hand to discuss specific applications and help with selection or other stepper drive solutions that may be more suitable for the customer’s application. The four gearmotor models are extremely durable with the gear unit components well proven in Micro Motors’ range of DC brushed and brushless gearmotors. All have metal housings and provision for simple face mounting and torque-matched output shafts. They are also compact - the maximum overall length of the 40 mm diameter gear unit is just 52 mm. Hollow shaft rotary actuators.

The new HLMT series hollow shaft rotary actuators from JVL A/S take a novel approach to decentralised precision positioning tasks on rotary tables and automated machines where a through aperture is required for routing services or maintaining a clear line of site. Available in the Britain from Mclennan the design features an offset motor mounting in five model variants with clear through-hole diameters from 20 to 30 mm and rated torque output of 5 to 142 Nm. The actuators are used with JVL’s MAC motor® and ServoStep® integrated servo and stepper motors or with other manufacturers motors in NEMA 17, 23 and 34 frame sizes.

The HLMT includes a comprehensive choice of options making installation straightforward and cost-effective. These include built-in absolute encoders for positioning accuracy to +/- 10 arc-sec and lost motion to 2 arc-min. Built-in home (datum) sensors are also available and standard or crossed-roller bearings options suit standard or heavy duty axial and radial rigidity requirements (axial load to 800 N on the largest model). Gear ratios available are 5, 10 or 18:1 with higher ratios on request.

With its inherent high torque, axial load capability, low run-out and platform parallelism the HLMT series is particularly suited to rotary table applications but will also suit machine set-ups where slip rings, electrical wiring, rotary fluidpower joints or laser line-of-sight needs to be routed for moving to stationary platforms. The durable geared actuator meets the IP65 protection class, as does many of the JVL integrated motors.

The product depth and flexibility of JVL’s range of integrated servo and stepper motor allows almost any choice of machine control interfacing with the added benefit of decentralised control for reduced installation and wiring. With no need for control cabinets, decentralised control can yield tangible cost and time savings. Control options cover individual or multi-axis stand-alone motion control with step and direction or analogue +/- 10 VDC inputs. JVL’s own ‘point & click’ graphical programming is also available across all its integrated motors. For MAC® series integrated servomotors, the control options extend to a wide choice of Industrial Ethernet or other common protocols including CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT. POWERLINK and more. Wireless Bluetooth, WLAN and Zigbee systems are also available. The HLMT series may be purchased for use with third-party stepper and servomotors of choice, allowing the option to build through-hole rotary actuators with the customer’s preferred motor/motion controls supplier.

Miniature integrated motor.

Applied Motion Products (AMP)  has launched a Power over Ethernet (PoE) enabled integrated miniature microstepping motor package that combines a closed-loop digital drive, feedback encoder and an Ethernet-supported motion controller as a single-cable positioning solution. With PoE linked drive/controller power and Ethernet communications over a single cable the unique TSM14POE series, based on AMP’s well proven StepSERVO™ technology, will bring a new level of application capability for miniature decentralised automation tasks with time and cost savings through simplified wiring as well as compactness and location flexibility.

Available through Mclennan - AMP’s European distribution partner – the NEMA size 14 integrated motor could be applied to existing PoE-linked devices such as IP Camera systems to add positioning capability, or to miniature automated devices such as robotics, end effectors, small actuators and medical instruments.

AMP’s StepSERVO™ technology provides greater torque, higher acceleration rates, better efficiency, decreased motor heating, and less audible noise than traditional, open-loop step motor systems. For the new TSM14POE series the drive stage is combined with an integral 4096 ppr magnetic encoder providing high accuracy position and speed feedback through a choice of industrial Ethernet protocols including Ethernet TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. Motion control via AMP’s Q Programming language enables axis positioning plus motion profiles with maths and conditional functions available along with stored program execution for machine interaction over Ethernet.

The TSM14POE is compatible with IEEE 802.3at Type 2 specifications for PoE+ and with switches and injectors that support the standard. A choice of models offer X-coded M12 or modular RJ-45 connectors for application flexibility. Both have square nominal housing dimensions of 35 mm x 35 mm with the slightly longer M12 connector option being approximately 109 mm, and 99 mm for the RJ-45 option. Speed and torque characteristics are application dependent with nominal holding torque in the region of 0.4 Nm. Additionally, AMP and Mclennan offer the TSM14POE series complete with integrated low-backlash planetary gearheads in a wide range of ratios where increased torque performance is required.

TSM series stepServo™ integrated motors are also available in larger and smaller frame sizes with conventional power supply requirements. Users can choose from NEMA size 11 to 34 packages with torque output from around 0.1 to over 8 Nm with a wide selection of control and interfacing options. Motor speeds up to 3600 rpm and encoder resolutions of 20,000 counts/rev make the range suitable for a very wide range of motion control applications.

Structural health monitoring.

New from Leine Linde and available with full support from Mclennan, the ESR strain sensor is measurement concept that offers a novel alternative to conventional strain gauges through improved accuracy, signal quality and especially durability. Particularly suited to large-scale machine structural health tasks where load or force needs to be reliably monitored, the ESR utilises Leine Linde’s robust optical encoder technology coupled to a mechanical measuring arm arrangement which is fixed to the structure’s strain-prone components.

With its integral EnDAT bi-directional digital interface, the ESR’s high resolution output of 0.025 μɛ (μm/m) can be connected to almost all available machine control systems and additionally can offer stored application-specific data that may be used for machine functions, for instance for safety or other operational tasks. Application areas for the ESR can include but are not restricted to structural monitoring on bridges, cranes and towers, wind turbine blades, large machine frames, construction equipment, bulk material conveying lines and more.

The strain sensor arm design features passive temperature compensation, and its stress-free measurement principle offers a practically unlimited operation life. Operational temperature can be designed for -40°C to +100°C and the measurement range covers ± 5 000 µɛ with a working range of ± 17 500 µɛ. The unit will fit into a volume envelope of approximately 340 x 80 x 85 mm (L x W x H). The ESR also boasts an impressive shock and vibration rating to ISO 60068-2-26, and its IP66 environmental rating offers trouble-free use in harsh environmental conditions.

For use as a temporary strain measurement tool or for permanent installation, the ESR’s measuring arm design and mechanical interface can be custom-adapted to the application with variant options and accessories available for adhesive, screw, or magnet installation. Other options include various measurement reports, quality control certifications or DAkkS calibration.
