Video wall for control rooms.

A new 4K DLP® Laser Video Wall with Xtra Slim form factor from Delta, is ideal for control room applications. Its 4K 70” cubes have a depth of 560mm, making them the thinnest DLP® laser cube in the world. Furthermore, it offers unmatched brightness of 2,400 lumens at ≥98% uniformity, creating yet another industry benchmark.
Each display is equipped with multiple laser modules that work in tandem, not only creating stunning visuals, but also achieving higher energy efficiency and longer operating life, thus ensuring they are virtually maintenance-free.

This innovation provides industry-leading 4K engine resolution (3840 x 2160), which is four times that of standard HD (1920 x 1080). This means that users get four times the data content that could be achieved in the same size of HD video wall cube for monitoring and surveillance purposes. This is hugely important given the growing market of 4K IP cameras to support surveillance and monitoring operations worldwide. As a result, DLP® display units need to match the 4K cameras and source device resolutions to achieve wider surveillance areas.

The 4K DLP® surveillance area is much bigger than HD DLP®, helping operators maintaining a round-the-clock vigil to monitor, analyse and act on any suspicious activity. These advantages also translate to public safety applications, whereby the monitoring map can be four times wider than a HD DLP® monitoring area. In fact, almost control room application will benefit, including traffic monitoring, disaster control and broadcasting.

Along with clearer and more distinct picture quality, Delta’s ground-breaking Xtra Slim 4K DLP® Laser Video wall offers many advanced functions. For instance, when the monitored area is still in HD resolution, displaying on a 4K DLP® display is not a problem. In fact, it is possible to open four original HD resolution PiP (picture-in-picture) windows within the same screen.

The Delta Xtra Slim 4k Laser Video wall can accept 4K input signals at 60Hz and pixel clock frequencies up to 594MHz, while support capability is offered for DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 interfaces. Further advantages include wide viewing angle and true redundancy. In addition, the system carries IP6X certification thanks to its built-in intelligent system, Intelli-Sense, a unique and intelligent auto correction system that ensures enhanced system performance and long life without external intervention.

Gateways for ProfiNet IRT.

HMS Industrial Networks has released new versions of their widely-used Anybus gateways for PROFINET IRT. The new versions allow machine builders and system integrators to connect any industrial device, machine or network to PROFINET IRT and comply with all the latest requirements of PROFINET specification v2.3 and onwards.

What are Anybus gateways?
Anybus gateways enable communication between machines and industrial networks, especially focusing on fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet. Anybus X-gateways connect any two industrial networks while Anybus Communicators connect non-networked devices via a serial line (RS232/422/485) or a CAN interface to all major fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks.

New network combinations launched within the Anybus X-gateway range
All Anybus X-gateways for PROFINET IRT* are now upgraded to be conform to the PROFINET v2.3 specification, allowing up-to-date and conform connectivity between PROFINET IRT and a vast number of different industrial networks such as EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus-TCP and PROFIBUS.

New Anybus Communicators allow serial devices to communicate on PROFINET IRT
HMS can now also offer Anybus Communicators for PROFINET IRT allowing any serial (RS232/422/485) or CAN-based device to communicate on PROFINET IRT v2.3. All gateways are conformance tested for network compliance.

Anybus gateways allow users to comply with the demands of the AIDA group
“The new PROFINET IRT v2.3 standard sets high demands when it comes to PROFINET network performance,” comments Markus Bladh, Product Manager at HMS.

“Since we always aim to be compatible with the latest network standards, we have implemented our award-winning network processor Anybus NP40 in the new gateways to handle the demands of PROFINET standard v2.3. This means that users can comply with the demands of the AIDA-group (the German Automobile Manufacturers) and deliver automation equipment that is up to their standards, simply by connecting an Anybus gateway.”

Key technical characteristics
All new versions support PROFINET RT Class 1 and 3 and come with a PROFINET IRT Ethernet cut-through switch implemented in the module’s processor – ideal when true low microsecond latency is needed. The gateways are conformance-tested to support Class A, B and C. PROFINET IRT Device/Slave settings can be made either via the built-in web interface, or by importing the provided .GSDML file into engineering tool of the controlling PLC.

* IRT stands for Isochronous Real-Time – meaning that data exchange cycles are usually in the range of a few hundred microseconds up to a few milliseconds. The difference to real-time communication is essentially the high degree of determinism, so that the start of a network cycle is maintained with high precision. The start of a network cycle can deviate up to 1 µs (jitter). IRT is required, for example, for motion control applications (positioning control processes) because these devices need to be synchronized. (Wikipedia - ProfiNet)

Trace oxygen analyser.

The XZR400 oxygen analyser from Michell Instruments is designed to measure trace levels of oxygen in pure, inert gases such as nitrogen, argon, helium and carbon dioxide. Capable of detecting oxygen down to 0.01 parts per million, the analyzer is used to ensure the purity of gas produced by cryogenic air separation.

The XZR400 uses Michell’s MSRS zirconium oxide oxygen sensor, which contains a metallic sealed reference and ensures long-term repeatability of measurements. The MSRS means that no reference air is required. The technology is non-depleting which gives the sensors a long life span of over seven years. Calibration is required every three to six months and can be carried out with just one calibration gas saving time and money.

The XZR400 range features four configurations: rack, wall, bench mount and transportable. All models include an intuitive touch-screen interface for quick and easy operation, barometric pressure and digital flow meters as standard. One or two 4-20 mA outputs are available and other options include digital outputs such as Modbus RTU over RS485 protocol, RS232, internal or external sample pumps and process pressure correction.

Tank inventory management software.

Endress+Hauser releases SupplyCare 3.0, an update to its IIoT application for tank inventory management. SupplyCare provides a complete overview of levels and product inventory in a company’s tanks and silos worldwide. Enhancements in SupplyCare 3.0 include hardware and software options allowing level, flow and pressure data to be displayed at a desk or handheld device regardless of location—and advanced inventory tools for forecasting, reporting, stock analysis and other functions.

SupplyCare Enterprise runs by default in an Apache Tomcat-environment on an application server as a service under Microsoft Windows. Operators and administrators access the application via a web browser from their desks or handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets. SupplyCare can create reports in various formats including Excel, PDF, CSV and XML. Data can be easily shared with and used by other systems and computing platforms.

SupplyCare 3.0 receives data from local I/O at a company’s tank farms and refineries; from third-party platforms such as control systems, data historians and ERP systems via OPC DA technology; and from email servers at gateways. This allows a company to monitor tank levels and inventories worldwide to help manage its entire operation. For example, SupplyCare 3.0 detects events such as falling below safety stocks or plan points, and sends e-mails to predetermined users.

Whenever there is a technical problem, such as a connection failure, SupplyCare sends alarm messages and e-mails to the system administrator and designated contacts. The system can receive measured values from two redundant data sources. In case of failure of the primary data source, the system switches automatically to the secondary data source.

Enhancements in SupplyCare 3.0 include SupplyCare Hosting SCH30 and Enterprise SCE30B software that provide inventory visualization, forecasting and reporting tools, stock analysis and reconciliation between plants, planning and scheduling inventory transfers, monitoring of alarms and events, and visualization of sites and stocks on a geographical map.

New IMS SXS70 Middleware enables the integration of SupplyCare data with ERP or MES systems. The middleware has four workflow modules that use standard data formats and connectivity methods such as XML, JSON, REST and SOAP. The middleware can connect directly to a company’s ERP system, or send data to customers or other parties via the internet.

New hardware enhancements include Fieldgate FXA42, a gateway that acquires data from local level, flow and pressure instruments; sends it to the local control system; and transmits it to SupplyCare via an integrated web server. Also new is the Connect Sensor FXA30, a battery-powered cellular gateway for remote monitoring of level, flow and pressure instruments in locations where power is not available. It transmits data to SupplyCare via a wireless cellular phone connection.

The biggest network cyber threat!

Protect against the biggest threat in network security – your employees

A new course on Computer Network Security has been launched by Alison. Coming off the back of an IDC forecast at the end of 2016 that claimed spending on cybersecurity will grow to €96 billion ($101 US billion) by 2020, the course offers employers who are concerned about online attacks the opportunity to educate their employees at no charge.

Mike Feerick, Founder and CEO of Alison, said: “Given the grave risk hackers and other cybersecurity threats can hold for businesses worldwide, it’s logical that businesses would mitigate against that risk by educating their employees. Lloyd’s have reported that organisations lose more than $400 billion (€380b) per year to cyber-attacks, and one of the biggest threats organisations face is carelessness by their own employees resulting in critical information falling into the wrong hands.”

The course is a timely solution for companies looking to avoid becoming victims of preventable cyber-attacks. The content covered includes the core principles of network security, elements of risk management, physical security, methods of authentication and password security.

Mike added: “Since our course is available online for free, it’s a no-brainer that employers should ensure all of their employees achieve a pass mark in it before they are given access to sensitive information.”

The course is designed to give employees at all levels or anyone who wishes to learn more about network and computer security a comprehensive introduction to network security, and in particular for junior level IT specialists, computing students, and computer network engineers. Alison caters for a wide variety of vital workplace skills including business communication, public relations, marketing and entrepreneurship.

EX magnetic sensor withstands temperatures of down to -60°C.

Many users prefer non-contact sensors, especially in subzero applications, because, unlike electromechanical switchgear such as position switches, they do not run the danger of malfunctioning due to freezing moisture.

For this – admittedly highly specialised – application field, the .steute business unit "Extreme" has now developed a new series of Ex magnetic sensors. These cylindrical sensors of M20 diameter are cold-resistant down to -60oC and are also tested and approved according to ATEX and IECEx for use in gas Ex zones 1 and 2.

This makes them suited to environments which make up an increasing number of the customer queries received by steute – for example offshore plants installed in Arctic regions, or ships travelling through such regions, like gas tankers.

In these extreme conditions, the non-contact active principle makes sealing of the housings easier and guarantees durability: the mechanical lifespan of these sensors is over one million switching cycles, while the electrical lifespan has been calculated at 106 … 109 switching cycles.

The housing material – a high-quality fibreglass-reinforced Duroplast – guarantees that the high protection class of the magnetic sensors (IP 66 to IP 69) is maintained in these subzero temperatures, even after a 7-Joule impact test.

This set of features – particularly the large temperature range – makes the new series suitable for position monitoring of flaps, valves, lids and other moving components, for example in plants found in the oil & gas industry (onshore and offshore) or in the field of shipbuilding and port facilities. Other fields of application are handling systems on oil rigs and position monitoring on crane booms.

Safety & environmental presented by dust!

Ashtead Technology, TSI and Britain's Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) recently collaborated to deliver a workshop focusing on the environmental and safety hazards presented by dust and other particulate matter.

Well attended wokshop
Alan Hasson and Josh Thomas from Ashtead Technology provided an overview of the justification for dust monitoring in the workplace, and Nicholas Baxter from HSL described the requirements for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE), including an explanation of the terms ‘adequate’ and ‘suitable’ with respect to RPE. He also highlighted the importance of the CE mark, correct storage of RPE, and Fit Testing. This was followed by a practical demonstration of FFRED (HSL's Face-Fit Respirator Demonstrator) which provided delegates with clear visualisation of the problems caused by badly fitted masks.

In the afternoon session TSI’s Maxine Dolloway (Health and Safety Direct Sales Specialist) provided a practical demonstration of TSI’s new SidePak AM520 Personal Dust Monitor, which is available with a selection of impactors (sintered metal filters) for different size fractions, including diesel particulates. This new model enables users to set both visual and audible alarms for pre-selected particulate levels.

TSI’s Nick Brown (Senior Regional Sales Manager) then demonstrated TSI’s Environmental DusTrak (EDT), which has recently received MCERTS approval. The EDT is quick and easy to set up; delivering live data via the Cloud from the instrument’s dust sensor, in addition to signals from other equipment – meteorological sensors for example. Nick explained that MCERTS is an Environment Agency scheme, which provides third-party confirmation that the EDT complies with stringent performance requirements. Typical applications for this equipment include industrial fenceline monitoring, traffic pollution monitoring and environmental monitoring before and during construction projects that have the potential to generate nuisance and/or hazardous dust.

The workshop, which took place at TSI’s headquarters in High Wycombe (GB), was attended by health, safety and environment managers and consultants from a wide variety of industries. George Foulger from the Clancy Group, a leading provider of multi-utility services, found the day very useful, commenting: “There was a good mix of both occupational safety and environmental monitoring information. The presenters were obviously very knowledgeable and the presentations were pitched at just the right level.”

Summarising, Alan Hasson says: “These workshops provide us with a great opportunity to let customers know about the latest technologies so that, together, we can choose the best instrumentation solution for their needs – both technically and financially.”

Speeding Formula students!

Test equipment sourcing specialist Microlease continues to support academia with the announcement that it has provided advanced instrumentation and technical assistance to the Team Bath Racing Electric (TBRe) project - as they prepare for Formula Student 2017. Held at Silverstone (GB) each summer, this event (which is staged in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers) looks to inspire the engineering professionals of the future, by setting them the challenge of designing and developing their own race cars then competing against each other. It has 130 different universities from over 30 countries participating every year, featuring both electrically-powered and petrol-driven race categories.
The TBRe team comprises 10 master’s students and 30 third year students from the University of Bath. Each of them are responsible for different aspects of this project, thereby forming the basis for their respective degree theses. In addition, there are another 20-30 first and second year students involved.
To help them in this project, Microlease has supplied the team with various pieces of equipment. They have been using a Keysight U5857A thermal imager for monitoring the temperature levels around the exterior of the battery pack to identity hotspots. This item has also been employed for an investigation of potential energy scavenging sources in the brake callipers, and next there are intentions for it to be included in motor control testing procedures.

A 34972A data acquisition unit from Keysight (with built-in thermocouple junction reference) is likewise being utilised in this project, for vehicle diagnostic purposes. This incorporates a pair of 20-channel 34901A multiplexing modules plus the multi-faceted BenchVue software package. Via the unit, data from a series of thermocouple-based sensors, located at different points throughout the battery pack, can be captured for subsequent analysis, so as to ensure that operational effectiveness of the vehicle’s battery/powertrain is maintained.

For the next stages of the project’s development Microlease will be providing a Keysight N6705B DC power analyser, along with associated software. This will enable comprehensive studying of the DC loads that the vehicle has to deal with during races, so that full optimisation of the battery resource can be achieved. The team are currently completing sub-system testing. They will be starting on system level testing and rolling road tests this spring, ahead of race day which takes place in July.

“This event is a unique opportunity for university undergraduates to gain real hands-on experience of taking an engineering project all the way from the drawing board right through to completion,” states Glenn Howard, Field Sales Engineer at Microlease. “By collaborating with TBRe on their Formula Student electric car, we are helping to nurture the next generation of engineers.”

“Microlease’s contribution has proved to be invaluable to the team over the last 8 months,” explains Seán Thompson, a senior member of TBRe. “As well as the kit they have given us access to, there is also the ongoing technical advice that has been provided. With their help, we have been able to make improvements to our design that have resulted in a clear competitive edge being derived.”

GAMP5 complience in pharma industry.

The pharmaceutical industry is subject to strict regulatory requirements which demand a lot of time and effort to be spent documenting every step, process, and item. Itris Automation will be hosting a webinar in March 2017 to demonstrate how PLC Checker can help pharmaceutical companies more efficiently verify and document the GAMP 5 compliance of their PLC programs.

Part of the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP) is a set of guidelines regarding automated systems. These guidelines explain how to incorporate quality into each step of the manufacturing process to achieve the required quality of the finished product. Although not an obligation, most pharmaceutical companies choose to be compliant with GAMP, now recognised worldwide as a good practice. However, ensuring compliance and creating all of the required documentation is a laborious process.

In the webinar, you will discover an innovative way to address Appendix D4, “Management, Development, and Review of Software”, of the GAMP guidelines which will save companies time and money. Using PLC Checker, a unique static analysis tool dedicated to PLC programs, and the GAMP coding rules option, users can quickly and efficiently verify their level of compliance and automatically produce the necessary documentation.

Join the webinar to find out how you can save time and money in your GAMP 5 compliance process.

Programming language courses.

Alison, the large free e-learning platform, has launched two new courses on popular programming language R.* Although R is sometimes seen as a simpler programming language than others, there is a steep learning curve to begin with as it uses a different syntax model to most common languages.

The first course, Introduction to R for Data Science, is aimed at people who have a basic knowledge of data science that they want to expand on. It explains how R is used, and teaches the data structures and types found in R. The second course, R for Data Analysis, moves on to more sophisticated forms of data manipulation, with a strong focus on identifying underlying patterns and predicting trends in data-sets.

Social entrepreneur Mike Feerick, Founder and CEO of Alison said: “The trend toward Big Data is unstoppable, making the ability to analyse and comprehend data a vital skill in many lucrative fields of employment. Business analysts in sectors from finance and banking to government and the public sector – and everything in between – can benefit from taking these free courses to expand their knowledge.”

In the US, the average salary for an R programmer is paid between $76,000-100,000, and in the 2014 Dice Tech Salary Survey of over 17,000 technology professionals, the highest-paid IT skill was R programming.

Eric Corbett, Course Publishing Manager at Alison, said: “At Alison, we believe in empowering young people by enhancing what they learn through their formal education with both the soft skills and hard skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Shockingly, in most countries, programming still isn’t taught in schools, despite its obvious value to governments and organisations worldwide.”

The R language is widely used among statisticians and data miners for developing statistical software[6] and data analysis.

40 Gigabit Ethernet switch.

An innovative SWE540 6U OpenVPX 40 Gigabit Ethernet switch has just been announced by Abaco Systems. It provides high speed Ethernet connectivity for Abaco’s latest generation of high performance computing solutions such as the SBC627 single board computer and the recently-announced DSP282A digital signal processor. This enables the company to deliver significant performance upgrades for its growing range of rapidly-deployable, complete, pre-integrated mission ready systems. These solutions target high performance embedded computing (HPEC) applications requiring the transfer of large amounts of data with the lowest possible latency such as radar, surveillance, situational awareness and imaging.

The rugged SWE540 is uniquely powerful and flexible, representing the only 6U OpenVPX 40GigE switch currently available that supports full Layer 2/3 features including hardware Layer 3 forwarding at fabric speed rates. Layer 3 switching and routing is a critical requirement for advanced security and complex networks. It provides dynamic routing over standard routing protocols, enabling a flexible range of network/fabric configurations and applications.

Superior patent-pending cooling technology limits system thermal load while still enabling the SWE540 to run at peak performance, further enhancing its robust reliability.

The SWE540 supports multiple OpenVPX profiles and uses the latest high performance switch silicon technology to support 40 Gigabit Ethernet performance across 20 ports, allowing configuration within demanding HPEC systems and a broad range of Abaco’s mission ready systems.
It also provides a straightforward, cost-effective upgrade for existing users of Abaco’s GBX460 switch, maximizing the long term value of customers’ investments while enabling a significant performance increase for those looking to achieve faster transfers of large amounts of data with lower latencies.

The switch features Abaco’s latest OpenWare™ switch management software, allowing it to be easily customized for specific customer requirements. OpenWare provides support for a wide range of network protocols and MIBs (management information bases) with extensive capabilities for multicast, Quality of Service, VLANs, and differentiated services. The OpenWare management interface may be accessed via serial console, SNMP, Telnet, SSH or web interface.

The combination of the SWE540’s hardware and the OpenWare switch management software delivers comprehensive security capabilities. Designed for deployment in security-sensitive mission critical applications, SWE540 features include denial of service attack prevention, user password mechanisms with multiple levels of security and military level authorization schemes including 802.1X and sanitization to allow the overwrite of non-volatile storage if a system is compromised.
