Efficient container loading.

Combilift in Monaghan (IRL), is the largest global manufacturer of multi-directional forklifts and an innovator and leader in long-load handling solutions. Its recently launched Combi-CSS (Container Slip-Sheet) enables fast and efficient freight container loading for the transportation of timber, flat-packed furniture, panel products and similar goods.
This innovative system features a large platform where goods are pre-loaded on a powered steel slip-sheet, and with integral laser-assisted container alignment and hydraulic levelling the slip sheet and its payload are driven directly into the container hold using Combilift’s patented push-pull mechanism. Significantly reducing the full load loading time to as little as 6 minutes and ensuring safety and simplifying the loading process, the Combi-CSS control system relies on SGJ series cable extension transducers (CETs) from Variohm EuroSensor to monitor the slip-sheet’s position over CAN SAE 1939 for the loading and retracting procedure.

The 16-metre-long Combi-CSS is capable of loading up to 30,000kg in 20- to 40-foot containers with the alignment and load transfer process managed by a single operator. The slip-sheet material, Hardox 500, is an extremely hard grade of steel commonly used for large structural wear plate components in construction and mining equipment. With excellent resistance to scratching and surface scraping, these properties help maintain a low sliding friction for the loading and sheet retraction process. The slip-sheet has several pairs of holes at equal intervals along its length and the push pull mechanism, which sits underneath, utilises powerful hydraulically driven linear actuators that engage with these holes in an alternating pattern to drive the sheet forwards for loading or backwards to retrieve the sheet. The distance travelled by the actuators for each push or pull cycle determines how far the slip sheet travels – with position controlled using displacement feedback from the SGJ series cable extension transducer.

SGJ series cable extension transducers (CETs)
The SGJ series CET from Variohm’s distribution partner TE Connectivity was chosen for its industrial grade quality and IP67 environmental protection rating. Its rugged glass-filled polycarbonate housing protects a precision high-cycle plastic hybrid rotary potentiometer in a spring-loaded cable and winding drum arrangement. The durable stainless-steel measuring cable is simply attached to the moving element in a "free-release" tolerant design that safeguards against damage if the cable is accidentally released. A stainless-steel mounting bracket and industry standard M12 connector makes installation straightforward in any orientation.

With several output options available in the SG series, including voltage and current as well as CANopen versions, Combilift chose the SGJ model with an integrated CAN SAE J1939 output communication profile – which is widely used on mobile equipment and factory automation applications and interfaced seamlessly with the CSS’s control system. The zero to 80-inch measurement version (2032 mm) provides an accuracy of 0.5% and a full-scale repeatability to 0.02%. The position data, in 12-bit resolution, and device status information is transmitted as ‘Proprietary B’ messages over the J1939 network. The Node ID, baud rate and date rate options are easily set using dip-switches and versions are available with or without terminal resistors. The 80-inch travel version can be mounted in a volume of less than 100 x 67 x 127 mm; a larger 120-inch travel version is also available.

CETs, sometimes referred to as ‘String pot sensors’ provide a cost-effective technology for long travel linear displacement measurement and find use across industrial applications such as mobile construction and forklift vehicle safety monitoring, winch and crane position feedback, large agricultural machines, flood management systems etc. Variohm supplies CETs in miniature designs with position measurement as small as 40 mm through to long travel models with over 40 metres linear measurement capability. The sensors used in CETs include rotary potentiometers, incremental encoders and multi-turn absolute encoders. Output options cover all industry standard voltage and current output levels as well as digital pulse and bus communication protocols. Cable actuated technology requires no critical alignment and suits applications where space is limited or where moving components may be submerged, deep underground or partially obscured by other equipment. Variohm’s comprehensive range of CETs are easily adapted for use in harsh environmental conditions with IP68 protection ratings and application matched versions supplied with hazardous area certification.

Hybrid power and signal.

The Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance, with its current 32 members, is a registered association of leading technology companies pursuing the goal of establishing Single Pair Ethernet in numerous applications and markets.

With the publication of the NWIP (New Work Item Proposals) of IEC 63171-7, TE Connectivity has for the first time presented a hybrid system for Single Pair Ethernet data and simultaneous power supply. The Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance supports this proposal from TE Connectivity, as it provides additional power for many applications where PoDL technology (Power over Data Line) reaches its limits. The 4 power contacts plus functional earth combined with the SPE data connection in the M12 connector offer an interesting connection technology, especially for many compact, decentralized field devices.

The specification of a new 2-wire data connector in this hybrid interface shows the application diversity in the market. So, we can see that it is not the mating interface that shapes the market, but the application that defines the interface.

This is why the Single Pair Ethernet System Alliance believes this connector is another important piece of the puzzle for the establishment of SPE in numerous applications and thus supports the overall Single Pair Ethernet solution.

Panel labels.

TE Connectivity (TE) offers TTDS-245 thermal transfer printable adhesive backed panel labels. Their panel labels use high-performance adhesive foam to adhere to the surface making the need for rivets or bolts used for engraving obsolete. In addition to fewer components needed for installation, the engraving process can be noisy, dusty, and require special tooling to engrave the surface.

“The panel labels are an ideal alternative to metal or plastic engraving plates due to the lower material cost, ability to print on demand, and reduced installation time,” said Marco Ungano, TE field application engineer. “Adhesive-backed panel labels can be printed on-demand, anywhere using any TE thermal transfer printer. Printing on demand saves production time, allowing faster installation time for less money.”

TE’s panel labels are die-cut pieces on a liner in a roll format offered in standard colors of white and silver. Custom colors and shapes are available. Typical applications are industrial control panels, data racks, switchgear and general Industrial equipment labeling.

“We’re finding that even for customer applications in the harshest of environments, TE’s carefully selected adhesive used on our panel labels, allows for replacement of traditional metal and plastic engraving plates” said Ungano. “It’s additional time and costs when a customer realizes the etched metal or plastic plate has incorrect data and requires a new plate. TTDS-245 panel labels allow our customers integrate custom logos along with variable data and print all in-house. TE’s panel labels provide a superior solution with a far lower average total cost”.

Panel labels have three distinct layers- a printable topcoat that provides protection, a central film for stability and structure, and an adhesive layer which is ideal to adhere to many surface types including low surface energy and powder coatings. The adhesive foam backing can conform and adhere to textured surfaces, uneven surfaces and rounded shapes unlike traditional rigid metal or plastic engraving plates. TE Panel Labels are ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications.

These ZHD–SCE sleeves can be used in a wide variety of applications including rail, marine, motorsports and industrial that require the highest performance from an identification sleeve, without compromising on safety or capability. Identification print is guaranteed when using TE’s WinTotal software in conjunction with the recommended ribbon and thermal transfer printers.

“The ZHD SCE provides true limited fire hazard and chemical resistance properties combined within 1 heat shrink sleeve, ” said Philippe Contri, TE product manager. “Through decades of product engineering, customers can have a limited fire hazard identification sleeve without compromising on performance”

Being zero halogen and diesel resistant, ZHD-SCE bridges the gap between D-SCE marker sleeves and HX-SCE marker sleeves. TE’s ZHD-SCE identification solution ensures flexibility in use due to easy printing and kitting.

TE’s ZHD-SCE sleeves features and benefits include:

  • Thermal transfer printable
  • Zero halogen
  • Diesel resistant
  • Resistant to key rail and industrial fluids including diesel (defined by RW-2536)
  • Low toxic fumes
  • Non-flame propagating
  • Shrink ratio 2:1
  • EN45545-2 R22 HL2

In addition ZHD SCE sleeves are fully free of substances of very high concern (SVHC), in line with TE’s compliance with the European Community’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) legislation.

Hand-writeable, self-laminating labels.

TE Connectivity (TE) has released the TKM and BKM series of hand-writeable, self-laminating labels.

TE’s TKM and BKM products are self-writable clear vinyl film with a permanent acrylic adhesive. Supplied with a white hand writable area which is over-laminated upon application using the clear portion of the label. TKM/BKM are hand writable which allows for on the spot labelling, protected by the self-laminating feature. These labels are available in two formats. TKM is supplied in booklet form while BKM is supplied in sheet form.

“Self-laminating wraparound labels are ideal for identification of wires, cables and pipes,” said Robin Parella Gershkoff, TE product manager. “Also, TKM and BKM products are resistant to chemicals and frequent handling, making the labels ideal to use for job site installations. The series is engineered to withstand exposure to solvents, salts, alkalis and water, while still being free from cadmium, silicone and PTFE and is not electrically conductive.”

TKM/BKM labels can withstand temperatures of minus 30°C (minus 22°F) to 120°C (248°F).

TKM booklet labels are available in 25.0mm (0.984 in.) width and in four heights ranging from 50.0mm (1.969 in.) up to 230.0mm (9.055 in.). The booklet is ideal for remote work sites when printers are not readily available.

BKM sheet labels are available in four widths ranging from 23.0mm (0.906 in.) up to 50.0mm (1.969 in.) and four heights between 38.0mm (1.50 in.) up to 230.0mm (9.055 in.).

TKM and BKM labels are fully free of substances of very high concern (SVHC), in line with TE’s compliance with the European Community’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) legislation.

Industrial labels.

TE Connectivity (TE) has introduced new self-adhesive polyester rating labels, PR115. These custom-designed labels have UL969 category PGJI2 file MH29684 approval, which means that they can be printed by end-use product manufacturers using thermal transfer equipment.

“The PR115 labels are part of our Specialty Product Industrial label portfolio,” says Philippe Contri, TE product manager. “They are the result of the collaboration between TE and several customers in the Industrial sector, and are priced competitively.”

Customers can use the new PR115 labels to identify such items as motors, engine starters of electric vehicles, relays, hydraulic pumps and electrical installations, as well as on solar panels in areas where there is no direct exposure to the sun. The labels can be dispensed automatically, adding to the efficiency of automated assembly and production processes. They can be directly applied from the printer to the back of a solar module.

The 50-micron polyester labels, which have an operating temperature range from -40°C to +150°C, can be customized with pre-printed designs and applied on a large range of substrates including acrylic paint, aluminum and epoxy paint. With an acrylic adhesive thickness of 20 microns, they are recommended for smooth surfaces. Available in satin silver or gloss white, the labels are thermal transfer printable using TE’s current T200 Ident, T3212 and T3224 printers, along with the previous printer range TE3112 and TE3124.
