Servo motors smarter and more efficient than ever.

In a significant advancement for the industrial automation sector, Siboni and CoreTigo have announced their continued cooperation, utilizing CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless technology, within Siboni’s servo motors.

By integrating CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless technology, Siboni created the PL4 series, of wireless, planetary gearbox, electronic drive brushless motors. These low-voltage, compact solution motors, are highly energy efficient while offering superior control precision, making them perfect for accurate industrial applications.

IO-Link Wireless Inside.
The integration of CoreTigo’s TigoAir 2 embedded system-on-module into Siboni’s servo motors is a leap forward in intelligent motion control solutions. This enables the mission-critical information required by industrial professionals to maintain optimized production lines. Siboni’s IO-Link Wireless enhanced motors are suitable for various application fields, such as packaging machines, rotary tables, industrial robotics, logistics, mobile applications (including AGVs and LGVs), and smart transport tracks.

These enhanced motors feature numerous advantages:

Real-time Wireless Control:
Cable-free control of the servo motor which increases flexibility and reduces the complexity of deployment and maintenance. With a 5msec latency, it offers the performance of a wired industrial-grade connection, without the wires.

Advanced Sensing Capabilities:
As rapidly and continuously rotating motors are subject to various effects, it’s crucial to keep track of their performance, monitoring numerous variables, while machining. Using IO-Link Wireless allows this in an integrated and seamless manner, without having to put the production line to halt for analysis. This includes the ability to sense, transmit, and analyze information from a variety of sensors, including temperature, vibrations, and humidity, for optimization and predictive maintenance.

Wireless Connectivity to Any Automation System:
Harnessing IO-Link Wireless for Siboni’s PL4 servomotor series eliminates the need for complex wiring. Additionally, it allows seamless integration with various industrial communication protocols, such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, and OPC UA.

Efficient Data Management:

This prevents the PLC from traffic overload while allowing the full range of data to flow from the IO-Link Wireless Master to cloud and enterprise applications aggregating all the information.

Comprehensive Analytics:
Standard statistical algorithms such as RMS, Variance, Kurtosis, and FFT can be implemented easily, enabling advanced analytics and intelligent insights.

Watch the IO-Link Wireless Servomotor in this video.

How Does it Work?

The PL4 series was created by integrating an IO-Link Wireless system-on-module directly into the servomotor, at the field level, enabling it to communicate directly with the IO-Link Wireless Master. At the control level, the IO-Link Wireless Master communicates both with the PLC (with various Industrial Ethernet protocol options) as well as with enterprise applications, via the TigoEngine software application.

In this manner, full control & visibility are enabled from the top of the organization, all the way to the factory floor level.

Other benefits of the IO-Link integration include:

  • Seamless and complexity-free installation
  • Increased flexibility and installation options
  • Reducing maintenance, as a result of fewer cables
  • Simple future add-on of multiple IOs

These capabilities will be demonstrated live by Siboni, at SPS 2024 (12 to 14 November 2024 Nuremberg (D) ), at Hall 1, Booth 249, as part of CoreTigo’s IO-Link Wireless Ecosystem.

Smart greenhouse!

Ensuring the uninterrupted power supply for greenhouse control including in the event of a power failure.

In view of the increasing global demand for food with limited cultivation areas and resources, the optimization of production processes in the horticultural industry is becoming increasingly important. Hoogendoorn Growth Management relies on innovative technologies to promote sustainable and efficient food production. With the intelligent IIVO greenhouse control system, the company offers a future-oriented solution that can be seamlessly integrated into existing infrastructures. In order to ensure the operational reliability of the system even in the event of power failures or voltage dips, Hoogendoorn was looking for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that could cope with the demanding operating conditions. This application report by Jos van den Berg of Hoogendoorn Growth Management, tells how Bicker Elektronik overcame the challenge with an all-in-one solution.

Intelligent control system for greenhouses.
The IIVO Control Station is an innovative industrial PC and is installed on site in a control cabinet in the greenhouse. For simplified and optimized management in a controlled growing environment, IIVO is compatible with all industry-standard sensors, intelligent camera systems, irrigation systems and robots. IIVO continuously monitors all relevant factors of the greenhouse environment and automatically controls processes individually to suit the specific needs of the plant culture. For example, the climate conditions, CO2 content and water consumption are analyzed and archived in order to obtain a holistic overview of the greenhouse conditions with the available data and to adapt these individually for the crop being grown.

The system uses „Intelligent Algorithms“ management software to administer processes, workforce planning and production. It draws on crop-specific insights, provides real-time data on activity, costs and plant health and offers suggestions for improvement to optimize production. These features help take cost-saving measures to maximize yield and crop quality. In short: produce more with fewer resources.

The challenge

Uninterrupted power supply for greenhouse process computers.
The 24V DC power supply of the IIVO Control Station is typically provided through an AC/DC power supply, which was intended to be backed up by an uninterruptible power supply (DC-UPS). In the event of power failures or voltage dips, it is likely that network failures or interruptions to electrically controlled systems, such as irrigation systems, will also occur. Therefore, a long-term bridging of the IIVO Control Station is not necessary. Instead, the top priority is a controlled shutdown of the system, which can take up to a minute, plus a buffer time of another 30 seconds. Hoogendoorn was looking for a maintenance-free and particularly robust UPS solution from a premium manufacturer that would resist the specific operating conditions and reliably cover the required bridging period.

Additionally, the UPS should automatically restart the IIVO system after a power outage to avoid unnecessary downtime. Seamless integration into the existing Windows environment was also an important requirement of the system developers. This ensures that the UPS solution works smoothly with the existing IT infrastructure without the need for additional adjustments or complications.

The IIVO system is exposed to different environmental conditions depending on the area of application. While the maximum temperature in temperature-controlled locations is usually below +30°C, in special applications temperatures of up to +60°C can be reached. It is therefore crucial that the UPS functions reliably for many years, even under these extreme conditions.

The solution

DC UPS with maintenance-free Supercap energy storage.
Hoogendoorn found the ideal solution for the demanding requirements at Bicker Elektronik: the uninterruptible 24V power supply UPSI-2406DP2 with integrated Supercaps. Thanks to the maintenance-free ultracapacitors, also known as Supercaps, the 24V DC UPS is charged within a very short time. It can bridge the IIVO Control Station, which has a power requirement of approx. 35W, for up to 100 seconds, thus ensuring a safe shutdown. The integrated reboot function of the UPSI-2406DP2 ensures that the IIVO system boots autonomously after the power supply returns.

With up to 500,000 full charge and discharge cycles, the service life of the Supercap is far longer than that of batteries. The DC UPS with a robust aluminum housing for DIN rail mounting is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +65°C.

Integrated Shutdown & Reboot function for autonomous operation.
The UPSI-2406DP2 offers a Shutdown & Reboot function as standard, which ensures the safe shutdown and autonomous reboot of the IIVO Control Station. In the event of a power outage, a MOSFET in the DC UPS disconnects the input within a few microseconds and the connected load is supplied without interruption from the energy storage device. The DC UPS signals a failure of the supply voltage via the integrated USB or RS232 interface and initiates a controlled shutdown to save valuable data. The integrated reboot function automatically restarts the connected IIVO process computer after the power supply has been restored. The reboot is carried out reliably even if the power was restored before the shutdown was completed.

Energy storage with absolutely maintenance-free Supercaps.
Supercaps work on the principle of the double layer capacitor (EDLC) and have high power density and temperature resistance. Supercap energy storage systems are characterized by their high cycle stability of over 500,000 charging and discharging cycles. This results in an exceptionally long service life, up to ten times longer than that of conventional lead-acid batteries.

Jos van den Berg, Hoogendoorn Growth Management says: "The reliability of our system is much better when we can be sure that our computer will shut down and restart predictably and in a controlled manner in the event of a power failure. The industrial design and maintenance-free nature of the Bicker UPS help us achieve this with a 'set and forget' solution."

The intelligent greenhouse control IIVO is a modern process computer that can minimize resource consumption and increase cultivation quality. The all-in-one UPS solution UPSI-2406DP2 enables the IIVO system to be optimally protected in the event of a blackout, brownout or flicker and thus effectively protects against data loss. Thanks to the Shutdown & Reboot function, no personnel are required on-site in the event of a power failure. The IIVO process computer is shut down autonomously and restarted after the supply voltage returns. If there are any deviations during initialization, alarm notifications are sent to the administrator. The combination of the IIVO Control Station from Hoogendoorn with the UPS from Bicker Elektronik enables highly reliable operation of the latest greenhouse technology.

Advantages & customer benefits.

Solution for the needs of FHEV, PHEV and BEV technologies.

The Single Monitoring Unit (SMU), just launched by LEM, brings previously unseen performance levels to all types of EV technologies – Full Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FHEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

“It’s widely understood that the EV industry is continually looking to maximize driving range,"
Says Jérémie Piro, Global Product Manager BMS at LEM. "BMS designers will welcome a new sensor that is not just compact but also ensures accurate SOC estimation, which are the two main factors. We are very excited that the new SMU family will bring previously unseen performance levels to the FHEV, PHEV and BEV sectors.”

The new modular SMU family meets the needs of designers of automotive battery management systems (BMS) who are looking to extend as far as possible the maximum driving range of an electric vehicle. The SMU continuously monitors such vehicle parameters as battery performance and safety systems. They also identify anomalies and support diagnostics, which improves vehicle efficiency and ensures compliance with regulations.

The design of the new high-performance sensor recognizes the need for the smallest possible components so that EVs can weigh less and travel further on a single charge. The compact SMU measures just 29.1mm (H) x 35.5mm (W) x 49.9mm (L) while the busbar thickness is 2mm to 3mm compatible. The integrated busbar does not just keep size down and improve accuracy, it has been designed to accommodate a range of different busbar dimensions. The key to maximizing EV driving range is accurate State of Charge (SOC) estimation, which means precisely determining the remaining battery capacity. Accurate SOC estimation helps to optimize battery life and prevent unexpected power loss, while enhancing user confidence and delivering efficient energy management.

The SMU is a Hall effect technology sensor, open loop configuration using the latest LEM9 Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). Designed by LEM to add intelligence at the Battery Disconnect Unit (BDU) level, the ASIC makes it possible to measure environmental factors while ensuring accurate sensor performance.

Many new features have been built into the SMU to optimize performance. For example, accuracy is improved by software algorithms that can correct or adjust measurement data to account for distortions or errors caused by mechanical stresses. This enhances the precision of the sensor's readings and makes it possible to reach 1% of accuracy up to 1300A and <1 .7="" 1500a.="" a="" accurate="" addition="" algorithm="" also="" and="" any="" applications.="" as="" avoided="" be="" bms="" built-in="" by="" calibration="" caused="" correct="" current="" dedicated="" detected.="" diagnostic="" digital="" drift="" eeprom="" eliminating="" end-to-end="" ensuring="" errors="" features="" flash="" for="" ideal="" improved="" in="" include="" includes="" internal="" is="" issues="" magnetic="" magnetism.="" malfunction="" measurement="" memory="" microcontroller="" mode="" more="" of="" offset="" or="" other="" over-voltage.="" p="" protection="" provides="" range="" readings="" reliable="" residual="" rom="" s="" safe="" sensitivity="" sensor="" should="" state="" such="" temperature="" the="" to="" under-="" up="" warnings="" which=""> The new sensor’s high isolation levels enable it to withstand voltage differences greater than 800 V between components or between the device and its surroundings. This improves safety and prevents electrical interference or damage.

Finally, unlike other similar sensors on the market, the new SMU family is compliant with functional safety conditions. This means that it satisfies the stringent Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) requirements built into the ISO 26262 standard for functional safety in vehicles. The first version to enter the market is ASIL B ready with the possibility to extend it to ASIL C. ASIL B applies to systems where moderate safety risks are present, balancing safety with practicality in automotive design, and the new SMU family incorporates all the safety mechanisms and design processes that are required to address the risks associated with safety-critical automotive applications.

How is your systems' health?

Enabling process manufacturers can benchmark a plant’s regulatory control performance and measure the impact of process improvements.

A tiered service, System Health Monitoring (SHM), offering that leverages intelligence captured by Control Station's PlantESP Loop Performance Monitoring solution has been launched by the company. The service enables proactive monitoring of PlantESP deployments, facilitating rapid response to system resource issues and guidance for achieving world-class control. Dozens of PlantESP licensees and the associated production facilities enrolled in the service offering prior to today’s official launch.

Control Station’s PlantESP Loop Performance Monitoring solution capitalizes on a facility’s existing historical process data to assess PID controller performance on a plant- or an enterprise-wide basis. The software uncovers a range of common mechanical, tuning, and process interaction issues that undermine productivity and that contribute to unplanned downtime. PlantESP’s library of metrics automates the identification of controller-related performance issues, and its portfolio of advanced forensic tools simplifies the isolation of root-causes. Historically, monitoring systems like PlantESP could falter due to natural disasters and other unexpected events, and process manufacturers lacked a common method for assessing performance. The introduction of SHM assures that deployments operate effectively while also providing a benchmark of performance and facilitating the pursuit of world-class production.

“More than verifying a system’s health and providing a prioritized list of tasks, the SHM service benchmarks a plant’s overall effectiveness from a regulatory control perspective,” shared Jonathan Stevens, Control Station’s director of services. “The insights allow customers to see how their plant stacks up against others, and they provide a simple way for licensees to measure the positive impact of each change to their plant’s operation.”

Intelligence derived by PlantESP is transmitted daily via a compact and encrypted machine-readable file. The captured information equips Control Station with timely awareness of:

  1. Server health: Basic evaluations of the system, including verification of server’s status (i.e., on vs. off), calculation engine status, and access to required databases.
  2. Infrastructure analysis: Assessments of system functionality and architecture, including available server and database hard drive space, identification of misconfigured and/or invalid loops and tags, and documentation of “dead loops”.
  3. Control benchmarking: A singular value for assessing a plant’s regulatory control performance and indicating net changes in performance over time.

The SHM offering utilises a variety of metrics and other intelligence to calculate an Overall Controller Effectiveness™ (OCE) value. OCE is a normalized measure for control loop operations based on the methodology for calculating overall equipment effectiveness. OCE provides a simple, quantitative means for benchmarking various levels of control within a plant. Through receipt of periodic scorecards, subscribers to the SHM service offering can establish plant or even corporate performance standards. Within the tiered service offering, a list of priority recommendations can be provided that aid customers with the targeting of PID-related issues that offer the greatest impact on control and production performance.

“The impact that process engineering and operations teams have on control and plant performance can be hard to measure,” noted Dr. Bob Rice, vice president of engineering at Control Station. “Our SHM service equips those teams with a simple gauge for evaluating their performance. With OCE they gain a means for tracking progress and perspective on their plant’s positioning relative to the broader manufacturing landscape.”

PlantESP has been successfully deployed at manufacturing facilities both globally and spanning all major segments of the process industries. Information provided for analysis is restricted to a PlantESP server’s available resources and aggregated values of the software’s metric calculations. No proprietary process data is transmitted. All comparisons within SHM assessments are anonymized to ensure that data cannot be traced to any individual source. As of today’s launch, the SHM service has been proven with customers spanning dozens of production facilities and encompassing over 23,000 unique PID control loops.

Secure routers insure industry security.

When Operational Technology (OT) networks are converged with Information Technology (IT) networks without security-hardened industrial routers, they run the risk of cyber attacks. A secure router serves as the network's first line of defense, preventing threats from propagating throughout the enterprise.

To defend OT networks against malicious threats, Moxa has introduced its EDR-G9004 Series of multi-port secure routers for Ethernet-based security. These 4-port Gigabit all-in-one devices combine an embedded firewall, router, Network Address Translation (NAT), and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) that protect the integrity of OT infrastructure and critical devices. This level of security is critical in power substations, pump-and-treat systems in water stations, distributed control systems in oil and gas production, and PLC/SCADA systems in factory automation. Additionally, the Moxa EDR-G9004 Series is certified to EN 50121-4 standards for use in railway signaling and telecommunications equipment.

Advanced Cybersecurity.
The 2022 IBM Security X-Force Threat Intelligence Index reported that manufacturing is the most frequently attacked industry, representing 23% of security incursions worldwide. And according to the 2024 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report, 61% of all security breaches impacted OT systems.

Recognizing these ongoing threats, Moxa embedded the EDR-G9004 Series with a firewall that applies policy rules to control network traffic between trusted zones, along with a NAT shielding the internal network from unauthorized access by outside hosts. Leveraging the VPN further provides users with secure communication tunnels when accessing the private network from the public Internet. Additionally, the EDR-G9004 Series supports Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to examine the data portion of network packets for various OT-specific protocols. The routers also leverage intelligent IPS functionality for continuous protection against cyberthreats using pattern-based detection that identifies and blocks known attacks.

Like all Moxa hardware, the EDR-G9004 Series is ruggedly engineered for harsh industrial environments. Wide-temperature models operate reliably in hazardous conditions and extreme temperatures of -40 up to 75°C. Moreover, the EDR-G9004 Series supports WAN, Layer 3 redundancy mechanisms, and Gen3 LAN Bypass fault tolerance, ensuring networks stay connected at all times.

The EDR-G9004 Series supports MX-ROS, Moxa's next-generation software platform for industrial security routers and firewalls, specifically designed for critical infrastructure OT and adhering to IEC 62443-4-2.
