Leakage current sensor.

The CDSR, a new leakage current sensor based on its open-loop Fluxgate Technology has been launched by LEM. The CDSR is innovative, extremely compact and safe, allowing manufacturers to optimize the electronic design of their charger products.

With a worldwide total of only 7.3 million EV charging points, of which 6.5 million were private in 2019, the lack of an extensive charging infrastructure is a key impediment to the growth of the global electric vehicle market. To support the massive deployment of EVs, driven by ambitious policies to phase out sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the charging infrastructure must increase by thirteen times.

Due to this high expected demand, manufacturers of electric chargers must develop solutions that are competitive, affordable and capable of being industrialized at high volume. As well as being easy to install for the end user, they must meet many standard criteria, both for safety and robustness of the product.

Since 2016, IEC standards and more specifically IEC 62955 / IEC 62752, require the detection of a Direct Leakage current at 6 mA DC to avoid the home Residual Current Device (RCD) Type A being ineffective. This effect, called “the blinding effect”, appears when an EV develops an insulation fault.

EV architecture integrates a battery pack, powered by Direct Current (DC), which can generate a leakage current that can deactivate a home RCD. To protect the RCD and avoid the need to install an RCD type B in the electrical panel of home EV owners, EV chargers include a device to detect the DC leakage current. This detection is the role of the CDSR.

The CDSR has been developed to meet market demand for a residential and commercial charging station, offering a version for single-phase architecture and another for three-phase topology. With a maximum current per phase of 32A rms, the CDSR can be integrated into AC chargers from 3.7 kW to 22kW.

Following the trend towards digital electronics, the CDSR provides not only an analog communication output but also a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI), enabling simple interfacing of hardware.  The CDSR operates from a +3.3VDC supply and has a typical current consumption of just 50 mA when measuring 150 mA as a maximum primary residual current.

The ratio-metric behaviour of the CDSR ensures it can resist power supply drift and maintain a stable output measurement.

Extremely robust, the CDSR can operate inside all EV chargers. It has an operating temperature between -40°C to 85°C, can withstand acceleration forces up to 10G while maintaining nominal performance, and has a very high level of insulation between its primary and measurement circuits, thanks to long creepage and clearance distances (13.2 mm).

Designed to ensure a high level of safety, the CDSR provides a default detection output signal with a reaction time below 200µs. Combined with an independent test winding, charger manufacturers can test the performance of the sensor in real time to guarantee maximum safety.

The CDSR provides an essential component of the electrification world, making charging infrastructure more affordable, safer, and reliable for the future. This new technology, developed by the experienced LEM Geneva R&D team, opens the door to new horizons using DC systems to reduce CO2 footprint.

Helping the e-mobility revolution.

As electrical cars are beginning to be come more comon the requirements for charging them becomes more acute.

Delta is launching a new product to further support the e-mobility revolution, the 22kW AC MAX EV Charger. This innovative wall-mount EV charger boasts leading power output. In addition, Delta’s AC MAX offers extremely low stand-by power, over-the-air remote upgrade capability, lightweight design (about 3.8kg), networking capabilities, OCPP protocol support for back-end integration, as well as RFID reader for user identification. The aforementioned features provide a valuable proposition to charging point operators (CPO) in office buildings, retail facilities, hotels, parking lots and residential communities.

The high power output of the 22kW AC MAX helps EV drivers to enjoy reduced charging time by up to 70%(1) when compared to the common 7kW AC chargers in the market. Its remarkably low stand-by power consumption also contributes to energy conservation. In addition, its over-the-air remote upgrade capabilities allow CPOs to improve the charger’s firmware, eliminating the need for on-site maintenance and thus, improving management efficiency.

Integrating peripheral devices and back-end systems is easy thanks to the design of the AC MAX. The CPOs can choose to identify EV owners by using either an RFID reader or ISO 15118 user identification mechanism. The certified meter, integrated with AC MAX Charger, is able to accurately calculate the amount of charge and provide data for the payment system as a basis for billing. The AC MAX Charger’s support of the OCPP communication protocol and wireless networking communications allows the device to transmit related information to a back-end management system or Delta’s EV Charging Infrastructure Management System. This means that charging point operators can remotely manage chargers and view their on-site charging status via a dashboard in a central control room.

The AC MAX Charger supports SAE J1772, IEC 62196-2, and GB/T 20234 charging interfaces, making it compatible with charging standards employed in most countries. The device is compact (218 x 371 x 167 mm), lightweight (about 3.8 kg), and provides wall/pedestal installation, bottom-fed and rear-fed wiring options, IP55 protection against dust and water, and IK08 protection against impact. The hardware design makes it convenient for users to configure the charger to suit either indoor or outdoor conditions.

Delta’s 22-kW AC MAX Charger not only maximizes the value of its functions, but it also comes in three versions for different usage requirements—a basic version for standalone use, a smart version for distributed networking management, and a premium version with an attached certified meter for payment applications.

Large scale containment valves.

Powder containment and aseptic transfer valve specialist ChargePoint Technology has invested in new manufacturing machinery at its facility to meet increased demand for larger diameter valves for use in large scale drug manufacturing that requires containment.

The new 5-axis machine is the first of its kind in Britain and forms part of a wider £1million investment into advanced manufacturing capabilities at the company’s facility in Liverpool (GB). It will enable ChargePoint Technology to speed up the production and delivery of larger diameter valves up to 350mm (14”).

The investment has been made in response to growing containment demands that are being driven by growth within therapeutic areas, including oncology and hormonal drug products. This is leading to increased volumes of high potency active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs) being used in the production of tablets, capsules and other solid dosage forms.

Tony O’Sullivan, chief commercial officer (CCO) at ChargePoint Technology, commented: “We are seeing an increase in demand from solid dose manufacturing companies, including big pharma firms and CMOs in the US and Europe, for large scale containment valve solutions.

“Our new machinery enables us to manufacture larger diameter valves, directly addressing this market need. In addition, our in-house manufacturing strategy provides us with absolute control over the quality of the final product so our customers can rest assured that they receive high-performing and reliable technology.

“Growth in the high-volume manufacture of generics, particularly in Asia, is also driving demand for larger containment valves, as there is a need to upgrade existing process equipment to safely replicate the production of higher potency off patent drugs, while ensuring drug quality and operator safety. We expect this segment to grow in the future as the pharmaceutical landscape evolves.”

As part of the investment, a new automated washing plant will be used to ensure effective and repeat cleaning of parts with higher throughput capacity, while a new 3-axis coordinate measuring machine (CMM) will also allow for high precision measurement and scanning of critical valve components in-house.

ChargePoint Technology intends to invest further in manufacturing capabilities at its facility over the next three years. In particular, it plans to continue to evolve its product design using the latest manufacturing methods to provide further advancements in valve technology.

An integral part of a complete powder handling system, ChargePoint Technology’s valves are independently performance tested to the ISPE SMEPAC guidelines. The company works with select material handling solution partners across North America, Europe and increasingly Asia to ensure an integrated high containment handling process is successfully achieved.
