Differential pressure in cleanrooms.

Pressure differentials inside cleanrooms are not very large, as Vaisala’s Senior Project Engineer Seán Murphy explains, most are set somewhere between 5-15 Pascal. However, maintaining that differential is a critical part of the overall cleanroom contamination control strategy. These small pressure differences help air move in the right direction; help separate cleaner areas from areas with higher contamination risk and help organisations demonstrate that the environment has remained under control. In short, it is an important measurement for quality, compliance, and production continuity.

Seán Murphy is a Senior Project Sales Engineer at Vaisala with extensive experience in environmental monitoring for pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical devices, and other regulated environments.
He has worked across system design, applications, project delivery, and integration, helping customers implement monitoring solutions that support both operational performance and compliance.
Sean’s background in instrumentation and real-world system implementation gives him a practical perspective on monitoring in demanding cleanroom settings.

The key question is not whether you monitor, but how you monitor Many cleanrooms already monitor pressure. But when the data needs to be reviewed, for example during a deviation investigation, audit preparation, or batch release, the question becomes more specific: can these records clearly show the differential pressure relationship between critical areas? Can they demonstrate that airflow direction was maintained? Can quality and validation teams rely on the data to make a confident decision?

The monitoring method is critical.
A key challenge is ensuring that the monitoring method truly supports compliance. When the measurement approach is not well matched to the application—or when sensor range, measurement uncertainty, and alarm logic are not carefully engineered—readings can look normal yet still be too weak to support a defensible compliance conclusion.

BMS and EMS each have their own role.
A common misunderstanding is to treat the building management system (BMS), and the environmental monitoring system (EMS) as if they were the same type of system. They may all display pressure data, but they are designed for different purposes.

The purpose of a BMS is to control and stabilise the cleanroom environment. It keeps the air handling unit, airflow, dampers, and room pressure at their intended setpoints, focusing on making real-time adjustments needed to maintain consistent operating conditions.

The purpose of an EMS is to monitor conditions and maintain accurate records. It focuses on confirming that critical parameters stay within defined limits, alarms function reliably, and data records are complete. It also ensures that audit trails are available and that the documentation can support audits, deviation investigations, and quality review.

A simple way to describe the difference is this: the BMS helps the cleanroom stay stable, while the EMS helps the organisation prove that the cleanroom stayed stable. The two systems should have clearly defined roles. In regulated cleanrooms, control is important, but being able to demonstrate control is equally important.

Why direct DP measurement is easier to trust.
In some systems, differential pressure is calculated. This means the system measures the pressure of two rooms against a common reference point and then subtracts one value from the other to calculate the room-to-room differential pressure. This approach is common in control applications.

However, in low-pressure cleanroom applications, calculated DP can introduce uncertainty. It depends on two independent measurements, and each measurement has its own measurement uncertainty. Cleanroom pressure can also change quickly when doors open, airlocks operate, or people move between spaces. If the two values are not captured at the same moment, the calculated result may not accurately represent the true differential pressure relationship between the two spaces.

Direct DP measurement is more straightforward. One differential pressure transmitter is connected directly between two spaces, with the high and low ports connected to the two sides of the boundary. The measured value is the actual differential pressure between those spaces.

For critical cleanroom boundaries, this method is easier to explain and easier to trust. It measures exactly what matters: whether the correct pressure relationship is being maintained between two areas.

Good alarms should not create alarm fatigue.
A cleanroom is not a static environment. Doors open, airlocks operate, passthroughs are used, and people move in and out. These normal activities can create short pressure transients. Differential pressure may briefly drop when doors are opened, it can even spike DP in the opposite direction when the door moves. These transient readings are expected to be captured by the EMS; they do not indicate the cleanroom is out of control.

If a system generates an alarm for every short transient, the result is not necessarily better control. More often, it creates alarm fatigue. Important alarms may become harder to see because they are buried under too many non-actionable notifications. A better alarm strategy reflects how the cleanroom operates. The system should focus on extended duration events, such as a door left open, an airlock that does not recover, sustained loss of pressure cascade, or a change in HVAC balance. Duration-based alarming is often more meaningful than alarming on every momentary pressure change, because it helps teams respond to real excursions rather than normal behavior.

From a value on screen to a defensible record.
The maturity of cleanroom differential pressure monitoring is not defined by whether the system can display data. It is defined by whether that data can become a defensible monitoring record. For critical boundaries, direct room-to-room differential pressure measurement, an appropriate sensor range, known measurement uncertainty, suitable alarm delays, and an EMS with data integrity features all influence the quality of the final record.

This is where Vaisala solutions fit naturally into the monitoring architecture. With the CAB100 industrial control panel and PDT101 or PDT102 differential pressure transmitters, low differential pressures in cleanrooms can be measured and collected in a centralised way. When the data is brought into the viewLinc Continuous Monitoring System, it can be used for trending, alarming, reporting, audit trails, and data integrity management. This type of architecture helps teams clearly separate environmental control from compliance monitoring records, while giving quality, validation, and facilities teams a shared source of reliable data.

Small differential pressure, significant responsibility.
Cleanroom differential pressure may change by only a few pascals, but behind those small values are airflow direction, contamination control, alarm decisions, and compliance evidence. The smaller the value, the more important it is to measure, understand, and record it correctly.

For organisations, the real goal is not to collect more data. The goal is to build more reliable data records. These records help teams identify risks earlier, explain deviations more clearly, face audits with greater confidence, and support production continuity. That is why cleanroom differential pressure monitoring deserves serious attention.

Spacer coupling.

Outstanding smooth running combined with high torsional rigidity.

The "Simple-Flex" series from Jakob Antriebstechnik is an innovative spacer coupling that can be manufactured in lengths ranging from 0.5 m to 6 m and operates without the need for additional intermediate bearings, even over large shaft spans. Thanks to a sophisticated composite tube featuring a multi-layer, angle-specific fiber configuration, the design is remarkably simple; it accommodates axial, radial, and angular misalignments without requiring the compensating elements typically found in such couplings. Extensive simulation calculations and testing led to the development of a composite tube that combines bending flexibility with high torsional stiffness.

Its very low weight—resulting in low moments of inertia—and optimal balance quality ensure peak operating speeds and torque levels with exceptionally smooth running, all while effectively compensating for shaft misalignment. At the same time, the composite tube provides good damping characteristics, helping to reduce vibrations within the drive system. Typical applications include positioning tasks in gantry systems, fan drive units, indirect drives, spindles, and test stand setups.

Two hub types.
The "Simple-Flex" spacer coupling is available with either a rotationally symmetrical conical clamping ring or an easy-to-install split-hub design. The split hub features two radial clamping screws and offers minimal mass and moment of inertia, making it the more cost-effective option; meanwhile, the conical hub—with its high clamping forces—is particularly well-suited for high rotational speeds. Other hub designs and tube diameters are available upon request. Custom configurations are also possible, including flange hubs for flexible assembly, expanding conical hubs for integrated mounting, and positive-locking hub designs featuring keyways (tolerances P9 and JS9) or internal splines (e.g., DIN 5480).

The three available composite tube sizes are suitable for torques up to 2,900 Nm. These spacer couplings are backlash-free, maintenance-free, and corrosion-resistant, and they are designed for operating temperatures ranging from -10°C to 60°C.

Compared to conventional spacer couplings, the Simple-Flex covers a wider range of applications.

Crude scheduling and product blending.

Software enables refineries to respond more quickly to market volatility and optimise product blending.

Software that automates two of refining’s most time-intensive and margin-critical processes: crude scheduling and product blending has been introduced by Emerson. The new solutions enable refineries to increase operating margins, improve efficiency and respond faster to market changes.

Customers use Aspen Unified Scheduling™ (AUS) to eliminate the disconnected tools and manual data gathering that make scheduling harder during volatile markets. AUS now adds two new products – Crude Schedule Optimisation and Multi-Blend Optimisation – that bring planning, scheduling and blending into one platform. As a result, customers can turn optimal plans into realistic schedules fast enough to keep up with changing market conditions.

“Refinery schedulers are managing more complexity and greater crude market volatility, with the same hours in the day,” said Claudio Fayad, chief technology officer at Emerson’s Aspen Technology business. “By automating the most time-intensive workflows within a unified platform, our solutions free experienced teams to focus on higher-value decisions while enabling newer engineers to contribute faster. The result is stronger margins and better operational decisions across the organisation.”

Optimising crude scheduling.
Crude Schedule Optimisation takes refinery data from Aspen Unified PIMS™ and automatically determines the optimal crude receipts, transfers, blends and production schedules to maximise margins. By minimising manual work and enabling rapid ‘what if’ scenario testing, refineries can improve scheduling precision, thereby reducing errors and enabling rapid response to crude market fluctuations and price opportunities.

Maximising blending efficiency.
Multi-Blend Optimisation simultaneously optimises the recipe of each individual batch of blended product within the scheduling window. It continuously optimises product qualities and balances production against market conditions and operational constraints, while ensuring compliance with quality specifications. By making optimal use of available blend components, refineries reduce quality giveaway, lower blend component costs and improve profitability.

Both solutions are offered as separately licensed products available within Aspen Unified Scheduling. As part of the broader Aspen Unified™ solution, Aspen Unified Scheduling connects data, optimisation and execution – reducing manual intervention, improving operational consistency and accelerating the speed of critical business decisions.

Wrist strap monitor.

The Desco SCS SW Aware Monitor, the first single-wire wrist strap monitor that’s compatible with SMP is now available through Inelco Hunter. The SCS SW Aware, a single-workstation continuous (versus pulsed or intermittent) monitor, continuously monitors the path-to-ground integrity of one operator and one ESD worksurface. It uses Impedance Monitoring Technology (IMT) to provide stable continuous monitoring of the wrist strap’s path-to-ground and the presence of its one megohm safety resistor.

The SCS SW Aware Monitor is compatible with the SCS Static Management Program (SMP). SMP continuously monitors ESD control programs throughout all stages of manufacturing by capturing data from SCS continuous monitors and ionisers to provide a real-time picture of critical manufacturing processes. SMP captures operator and worksurface pass/fail data from the SW Aware Monitor, and all activity is stored in a centralised database for on-going quality control purposes. Reports generated by SMP reveal areas of concern, enable proactive prevention of ESD events, and validate the efficiency of a ESD control program.

Inelco Hunter offers a free ESD Static Control Survey to British-based businesses. There is no obligation - Inelco Hunter simply requests to quote on any items that would improve the current ESD programme. Using EN 61340-5-1 and its User Guide CLC/TR 61340-5-2, an ESD specialist will take onsite measurements and make observations of the existing ESD control plan.

The survey will verify that current ESD products meet EN-61340-5 standards. The written report will list applicable EN61340-5-1 and -2 citations and indicate whether the current ESD control programme is in compliance and indicate where it's not.

Eliminating nuisance and non-actionable alarms means better operator effectiveness.

Software reduces control system alarm volumes by more than 95% achieving EEMUA 191 recommended alarm performance levels.

Rompetrol Rafinare has reduced distributed control system (DCS) alarm volumes by more than 95% using DeltaV™ AgileOps operations management software at its Petromidia refinery in Navodari, (RO). The project improved control system alarm performance, increased operator effectiveness and brought refinery alarm rates within the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association (EEMUA) 191 guideline recommendations at Romania’s largest refinery.

“Modern control systems provide enormous amounts of operational information, but operators need the right context and visibility to act effectively,” explained Guido Wink, vice president of Emerson’s control systems and software business in Europe. “DeltaV AgileOps helps organisations continuously monitor and improve alarm system performance so operators can focus on the events that matter most to safe, efficient operation.”

With an annual processing capacity of approximately five million tonnes of fuel products, the Petromidia facility operates a broad range of conversion units and maintains a Nelson Complexity Index of 9.32, creating significant volumes of process data and alarms. Over time, control system alarms had evolved beyond recommended best practices, exposing operators to high alarm volumes, particularly during plant disturbances. Chattering alarms also contributed unnecessary noise, making it more difficult for operators to identify and respond to critical process events. Operators routinely experienced alarm flooding, while some alarms remained permanently active under normal operating conditions.

To address these challenges, Rominserv, Rompetrol’s engineering and maintenance services provider, collaborated with Emerson to improve alarm quality and reduce nuisance alarms across the refinery. The team implemented Emerson’s DeltaV AgileOps software to provide continuous visibility into alarm performance, including average and peak alarm rates, recurring alarm sequences and time spent outside recommended operating thresholds.

DeltaV AgileOps software captures alarm and event data directly from the DeltaV Distributed Control System which operates the plant, enabling engineering teams to identify high-frequency alarms, stale alarms and nuisance ‘bad actor’ alarms responsible for disproportionate alarm activity. Using performance dashboards and historical trending tools, refinery personnel evaluated alarm behaviour during steady-state operation, start-up conditions and process disturbances, while validating proposed changes to alarm limits, priorities and suppression strategies against actual plant data.

As a result of the project, the refinery reduced alarm generation from more than two million alarms per month during normal operation to fewer than 50,000 alarms per month. According to EEMUA 191 guidelines, operators should receive no more than one alarm every ten minutes during steady-state operation.

“Alarm management plays a critical role in maintaining safe, efficient refinery operations,” said Nilca George, process engineering director, Rompetrol Rafinare. “The continuous alarm performance monitoring and analytics provided by DeltaV AgileOps has significantly reduced operator alarm burden while improving overall operational awareness. The resulting system is more stable and better aligned with actual plant conditions, enabling operators to focus on meaningful alarms and respond more effectively to process disturbances.”

The implementation also improved long-term visibility into control system performance through automated alarm and event reporting. Existing historical alarm and event retention was extended – from approximately four to five days to nearly two months – enabling more effective analysis of recurring issues and supporting better-informed maintenance and optimisation decisions.

Director for water interest group.

SWIG (Sensors for Water Interest Group) has announced the appointment of Angus Fosten as Director. Angus is Sales Lead for the Ott, Partech and In-Situ brands in Britain and has over 35 years of experience in water measurement instrumentation.

Angus Fosten -
'Measurement technology geek.'

“We are delighted to welcome Angus to the SWIG board,”
says SWIG Chair Dr Mike Strahand. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and is well known in the water sector, its supply chain and in academia. More importantly, he is passionate about bringing the benefits of measurements to processes and to environmental protection, so SWIG will be the ideal place for him to help exchange knowledge on water monitoring.”

Describing himself as a ‘measurement technology geek’ Angus is fascinated by the latest developments in sensors that improve accuracy, stability, sensitivity, repeatability, ease of use and connectivity, while lowering costs, reducing maintenance requirements and extending calibration intervals. However, he says: “Everybody knows that you can’t manage what you don’t measure, but that does not mean measurement for measurement’s sake. It is vitally important that we monitor parameters that provide useful insights for actions, and that is why SWIG plays such an important role; bringing together stakeholders from all corners of the water sector.”

Mike Strahand agrees: “Sensors play an essential role in process control, checking compliance with performance targets and regulations, and providing insights for process optimisation and environmental protection.”

The cost of measurement instrumentation is generally negligible in comparison with most project costs. However, as Angus explains: “AMP8 includes over £104 billion of planned expenditure on water industry assets, and AMP9 is likely to be even higher. Sensors will therefore perform a critical role in maximising the value of this investment, and I hope that the water industry and other stakeholders will engage proactively with SWIG to share their knowledge, experience and best-practice.”

EMF sets a new standard.

The IFC 400, a new signal converter for electromagnetic flowmeters (EMF) has been introduced by Krohne. This instrument is a 4-wire signal converter for use with the proven sensors of the OPTIFLUX and WATERFLUX families. Typical areas of application include the chemical and petrochemical industries, water and wastewater applications, the food and beverage industry, and the mining and energy sectors.

The new signal converter is specifically aimed at demanding processes requiring highest measurement accuracy, advanced process and device diagnostics, and wireless device verification. In addition to enhanced self- and process diagnostics provided by the integrated OPTICHECK technology, it offers a NAMUR NE 107 status indication and a wide range of communication options.

Parametrisation, monitoring and verification of the field device can be carried out via Bluetooth. Using the OPTICHECK Mobile App or a DTM, for example, Level 0 or Level 1 verification can be performed during operation. A detailed verification report is generated automatically.

A particular highlight is the integrated Multi-Phase Operation (MPO) technology. In many applications, process conditions do not meet the ideal requirements for electromagnetic flow measurement. Gas entrainment, solids content or electromagnetic disturbances often lead to signal instability or even measurement failure.

This is where the IFC 400’s MPO technology steps in: intelligent signal processing algorithms stabilise the measurement process and enable continuous measurement with stable, repeatable readings, even under the challenging process conditions described.

The IFC 400 is SIL2/3-certified for use in safety instrumented systems and is available in both compact and remote versions. Thanks to the integrated Automated Partial Proof Testing functionality, the device can be partially tested by the safety system in SIL mode up to a test coverage of 75%, significantly contributing to extended proof test intervals.

• Krohne products are marketed in Ireland through DWN Instrumentation.

Explosion proof analysis.

AMETEK Process Instruments has expanded its 993X series of gas analyzers – including both 993X and 9933 models - with new explosion proof (Ex d) enclosures certified for ATEX and IECEx Zone 1 hazardous locations. The new design enables reliable analyzer installation in applications where purge gas is unavailable or impractical, addressing a common challenge in remote and utility-limited facilities.

The explosion proof 993X enclosure is rated IP66 and NEMA 4X, allowing outdoor installation and operation in minimally temperature-controlled environments. By eliminating the need for a continuous inert purge gas supply, the design helps reduce installation complexity, operating costs, and overall system infrastructure requirements.

“Many customers rely on purge-protected analyzers, but those systems are not practical in every Zone 1 location,” said Michael Gaura, senior product manager at AMETEK Process Instruments. “The explosion proof 993X gives users a robust alternative that maintains measurement performance.”

The 993X series primarily uses ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy to provide continuous measurement of sulfur compounds and other key components in natural gas and biomethane streams, including hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, and methyl mercaptan. The analyzers are also widely used in sulfur recovery and removal processes to measure sulfur-containing species such as sulfur dioxide and carbon disulfide, supporting process control, emissions compliance, and product quality. Other technologies can also be integrated to measure the concentrations of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in these end user applications, when required.

With the addition of explosion proof certifications, the 993X series offers greater flexibility for operators designing analyzer shelters and hazardous area installations across oil and gas production, processing, and renewable gas applications.

Unique sync solution for control systems and digital twins.

Keeps digital twins aligned with production plant operations to prevent configuration drift.

The Ovation™ Curation Tool is a first-of-its-kind synchronisation software for power and water control systems, delivering an easy way to maintain version control and detailed change history between multiple Ovation systems and simulators. The Curation Tool, released by Emerson, automates management of changes between power plant production systems and their digital twins to improve testing and training accuracy, save engineering time and enable faster troubleshooting and stronger governance.

One of the primary challenges of managing digital twins is ensuring that both the simulation and production are properly synchronised. Operators and engineers make regular changes to production systems to solve problems, improve performance and develop new control strategies. Over time, these changes cause the configuration of the plant’s control systems to drift from the digital twin simulation model. Manually tracking and implementing changes can take hours of engineering time, making the process both time-consuming and labour-intensive. The Ovation Curation Tool automatically tracks changes to the control system over time and enables fast and easy deployment of those changes to other control systems and simulations via an intuitive dashboard.

“Keeping a digital twin continually synchronised with live systems has always been a challenge, and that challenge continues to increase as workforce shortages make it more difficult to find and retain expert personnel,” said Rick Kephart, vice president of technology for Emerson’s power and water business. “The Ovation Curation Tool helps teams deliver lifecycle value for Emerson’s Ovation Digital Twin by making it easy to ensure simulations stay relevant, providing continuous benefit through improved training, testing, engineering and forecasting.”

The Curation Tool software can be set to run at an organisation’s desired frequency – weekly, monthly, ad-hoc – to automatically identify and track any changes made to the control system. Users no longer need to perform labour-intensive manual comparisons, and they have access to detailed change history and auditing via the intuitive dashboard, which shows what changed, who made the changes and when they occurred. This audit trail reduces the risk of undocumented or unexpected changes.

Once changes have been validated, a user can launch automated synchronisation between the production system and the digital twin, or between the digital twin and other Ovation control systems. Before deployment, the simulation snapshot impact analysis tool details any disruptions the changes will cause to the target system and suggests resolutions.

Using a system of repositories, the Curation Tool moves data between the production system and the simulator while maintaining synchronisation of the data. Multiple users can edit the same assets and merge their changes.

The Ovation Curation Tool will be on display at Emerson’s Ovation Users Group Conference 2026 from July 26-30 in Pittsburgh, PA USA.
