Magmeters with PECS.

PEX liners deliver durable, abrasion-resistant performance across flow meter portfolio, without PFAS-related compliance issues or added costs.

The release of PEX liners for the Rosemount™ 8750W Magnetic Flow Meter has been announced by Emerson. The Rosemount 8705 Flanged Magnetic Flow Meter and Rosemount MS Magnetic Flow Meter sensors are designed for water/wastewater and other slurry or abrasive applications. The new PEX liner gives users a longer lasting, PFAS‑free and more cost-effective flow meter solution that simplifies stocking and compliance while improving reliability in chemically aggressive conditions.

Existing liner solutions have relatively poor wear resistance to both chemical attack and abrasive slurries, emitting harmful chemicals as they wear. These solutions are also expensive to purchase and maintain, with liner flaring often occurring if meters are not installed promptly or removed temporarily and then reinstalled. Existing solutions also present stocking and inventory challenges because different applications require different liner types, an issue compounded by their relatively high cost.

To address these issues, Rosemount magnetic flow meters now provide a PEX liner option that is not available from other suppliers. This exclusivity enables end users to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concerns and durability challenges, without changing measurement technology or suppliers.

PEX liners formulated without PFAS help end users respond to increasing regulatory, environmental and public scrutiny, while maintaining liner performance. This simplifies material selection and stocking compared to fluoropolymer-based liners, as the latter can differ in materials of construction, depending on the application.

The PEX liners’ crosslinked molecular structure delivers high abrasion resistance, making it suitable for wastewater, slurries and other applications with entrained solids where liner wear can reduce product life. Even with all these advantages, PEX liners are typically less expensive than alternative solutions. PEX liners are available now for line sizes up to 8 inches, with liners for larger line sizes under development.

Industrial connectivity.

In industrial wireless deployments, one technology sits at the center of every high-performance network: the Wireless Distribution System (WDS) bridge. It is the fundamental building block that transforms isolated access points into a unified, scalable network fabric yet it remains one of the most misunderstood components in the field.

Whether connecting data across a sprawling manufacturing floor, linking multiple buildings on a corporate campus, or extending coverage across remote field sites, every WDS application demands one thing: reliable, intelligent network bridging.

WDS bridges eliminate the cost, complexity, and downtime risk of deploying wired Ethernet backbones in environments where cable is impractical or impossible.

Why industrial environments demand WDS.
For plant managers and network engineers alike, the challenge is familiar: industrial environments make traditional wired Ethernet backbones impractical, cost-prohibitive, or outright impossible. Moving cables through active production facilities, bridging across open yards, or connecting distributed sites on a campus introduces enormous installation costs and operational disruption.

Since the early days of IEEE 802.11 networking, engineers have solved this problem with WDS — the wireless interconnection of access points that replaces the wired backbone with a seamless, high-performance wireless bridge. The result is faster deployment, lower costs, and the flexibility to extend network coverage exactly where it is needed, without touching a conduit.

How WDS bridge configuration works.
A WDS deployment designates one device as the main access point — the main base station — which anchors the connection to the wired network. Additional access points, known as relay stations or remote base stations, connect wirelessly to the main base station and forward traffic between the core network and all downstream users and devices.

APs are configured in one of two bridge modes depending on deployment requirements:

  • Point-to-Point: Two APs communicate via high-gain directional antennas, wirelessly joining two discrete LAN segments across distances that would be impossible or cost-prohibitive to cable.
  • Point-to-Multipoint: A single main AP anchors connections to multiple remote APs simultaneously, enabling centralized network distribution across a large facility or multi-site campus.

In a point-to-multipoint configuration, all APs must share the same SSID, wireless channel, authentication mode, security settings, and LAN IP subnet range. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands support WDS bridging, however, the two bands cannot be bridged together within the same link.

Critical design considerations.
AP Placement & Signal Strength: Every WDS hop introduces latency and reduces potential throughput. Placing APs too far apart compounds this effect, degrading link speed across the entire network. Strategic AP placement, optimized for signal strength and line of sight, is essential to maximizing WDS link performance.

Security & Access Control: Industrial networks are high-value targets. Restricting WDS access to authorized personnel requires strong wireless encryption. While WEP remains an option for legacy compatibility, WPA and WPA2 are the protocols of choice for modern deployments, delivering the authentication strength and encryption depth needed to protect critical infrastructure from unauthorized access.

Antaira delivers purpose-built WDS bridge hardware designed for the demands of real-world industrial environments from bridge-only devices to full-featured multifunction platforms.
  • AMY-5133-AC-PD: A compact, cost-effective 802.11 5 GHz wireless AP/Client Bridge engineered for straightforward WDS deployments. Purpose-built, reliable, and ready to deploy.
  • ARX-7235-AC-PD-T: A multifunction industrial powerhouse combining 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wireless Access Point, Client, Bridge, Repeater, Router, NAT, and VPN all in a single PoE PD device. One platform. Every function. (Pictured right)

Both platforms deliver secure, stable wireless bridging with the performance margins that industrial operations require. And they are joined by Antaira’s full portfolio of industrial wireless routers, IoT gateways, access points, clients, and repeaters, all engineered to the same exacting standard. Every Antaira wireless device is hardened to endure the conditions that would destroy standard network equipment: extreme temperatures, high humidity, vibration, shock, and industrial-grade electromagnetic interference.

Deep-space motion.

Phytron GmbH* is a globally leading specialist in automation solutions for harsh industrial, extreme and aerospace and deep-space environments. The German Mittelstand manufacturer offers standard and custom designed products and systems covering stepper motors, linear actuators, precision mechanics, feedback systems, power electronics, and motion controls. Phytron’s application expertise covers many fields of industry and sciences for earth-based motion systems where numerous environmental challenges arise, but the most demanding applications are found in deep-space exploration craft and satellite systems. Phytron’s phySPACE range of space-certified drives are meticulously engineered to deliver optimal robustness, withstand intense vibration, resist radiation exposure, tolerate high operating temperatures, and perform with complete reliability in ultra-high vacuum.

One of the latest phySPACE space-certified applications has been recently delivered to the University of Bern - Switzerland, where specially engineered stepper motors are used on a high-precision laser-based mass spectrometer scheduled to land near the Moon’s south pole in 2029. The instrument is part of the payload for the Blue Ghost Mission 4, by Firefly Aerospace (USA) which encompasses NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative that enables the delivery of scientific payloads to the Moon. The spectrometer will examine the lunar south pole’s surface for chemical and isotopic composition. This research aims to advance our knowledge of the Moon’s geochemistry and foster an increased understanding of the solar system's origins and resources for future missions. As part of the design requirements Phytron provided the stepper motor housings in precision machined titanium alloy with a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) gold coating applied by the University of Bern’s research team. This gold layer is more than just an attractive feature—it plays a crucial thermal role by preventing excessive radiated heat transfer from the motor to nearby assemblies that require optical stability. Consequently, most of the heat is carried away through conduction rather than radiation, helping to protect sensitive neighbouring systems.

Extreme environmental conditions for space motion control.
Space-bound motors and actuators must operate reliably within a range of harsh environmental conditions. These demanding settings can be defined by one, or a combination, of the following factors:

  • Extreme Temperatures: The operating environment may expose the motor to extremely low temperatures as low as -270⁰C, or extremely high temperatures reaching up to +300⁰C.
  • Ultra-High Vacuum: Motors must withstand vacuum levels that can reach 10-11 Torr. Such conditions require careful consideration for undesired gas emissions from materials and components.
  • Ionising Radiation: Drive systems are subject to ionising radiation, which may deteriorate materials and mechanisms. Exposure levels can be as high as 108 Rad.
  • Aggressive Environmental Conditions: Certain applications require motors or actuators to be hermetically sealed to protect against contamination and ensure operational integrity.
  • Minimal weight: In addition to their resilience, phySPACE drive designs are optimised for size and weight, contributing to overall mission payload efficiency.

These challenges define the rigorous requirements for motion control systems used in space exploration, demanding the highest standards of engineering and manufacturing to ensure dependable performance throughout mission lifetimes. Phytron’s products and processes meet strict European Cooperation for Space Standardisation (ECSS) requirements confirming they can withstand space flight environments.

Stepper motor technology.
Whether harsh industrial, extreme, or space application environments, microstepping motors stand out as the primary technological drive solution for Phytron. Their unique design, which eliminates direct contact between the rotor and stator components, results in minimal wear and ensures ongoing reliability. The motors operate flawlessly with digital open-loop controls, and the capability to verify position using robust and non-contacting resolvers or encoders further enhances their suitability for demanding environments. These benefits make stepper motors the preferred choice for tasks requiring precision, durability and long-term reliability. For Phytron, stepper motors are employed both as stand-alone units, or as integrated assemblies with precision gearboxes and/or mechanics as part of complete linear or rotary positioning solutions - paired with complementary drives and motion controls for single or multi-axis applications.

Earth to Moon.
For decades, Phytron GmbH has been renowned for delivering high-precision motion solutions that thrive in the most extreme environments, from cryogenic particle accelerators to ambitious interplanetary missions. Phytron’s story in space technology began in 1985 with ESA’s Giotto mission - one of Europe’s pioneering deep-space probes. Giotto captured the world’s attention with its close encounter with Halley’s Comet in March 1986 and later with Comet Grigg–Skjellerup in 1992. During these landmark missions, Phytron played a vital role by providing custom-developed actuator systems that precisely control position and movement that is essential for adjusting scientific instruments in space, ensuring accuracy and reliability in unforgiving conditions. These early achievements marked a turning point in European space history and has set the stage for future innovation.

Building on its pioneering work with ESA’s Giotto mission, Phytron has continually advanced its technology to meet new challenges, these include the ROSETTA space probe, NASA’s Mars Rover, the James Webb Telescope, the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission, and numerous navigation and scientific satellites. Culminating in this latest lunar endeavour, Phytron’s drives continue to demonstrate their reliability in countless scientific and space applications.

Fail safe sensors.

Industrial processes place stringent demands on measurement technology. Extreme ambient conditions, aggressive media, chemically intensive cleaning and the need for accurate, fail-safe data are common. Conventional sensors soon reach their limits – due to condensation, corrosion, temperature extremes or labour-intensive maintenance. Developed specifically for these applications, the HTS401 from E+E Elektronik combines a robust protection concept with high measurement accuracy, easy system integration and a maintenance concept designed to minimise process interruptions.

To keep the sensor ready for operation even under severe stress, the HTS401 combines the proprietary E+E sensor coating with the Condensation Guard, a heated sensing unit that actively counteracts dew formation on the sensing element. As soon as the ambient conditions indicate a risk of condensation, the sensor temperature is raised slightly and automatically. This prevents moisture build-up on the sensor surface and keeps the output signal stable.

Complemented by the Automatic ReCovery function (ARC), the sensing element actively protects itself against harmful chemical influences. This reduces corrosion-related failures and measurement drift, extends service life and minimises maintenance interventions – especially in applications with high humidity and routine automated cleaning or sterilisation.

Analog becomes Digital.

Converter digitises up to three analogue signals – compact, rugged, and ideal for retrofits in harsh industrial environments.

Analog sensors remain a staple in many industrial environments – reliable and robust, but not digitally connected. To help bring this legacy technology into modern automation systems, STEGO has introduced the IOC 074 IO-Link Converter. This compact device transforms analog signals into digital process data and transmits them via the IO-Link protocol – enabling efficient retrofitting of existing infrastructures.

The IOC 074 is the first IO-Link converter on the market capable of digitizing up to three analog signals (4–20 mA and 0–20 mA) simultaneously. With dimensions of just 14 mm in diameter and 63 mm in length, it is perfectly suited for tight installation spaces, control cabinets, enclosures or compact system layouts. Its stainless steel housing is rated IP65, IP66, and IP67, offering reliable protection even in harsh industrial environments.

Installation is straightforward: the converter is connected between the analog sensor and the IO-Link master using standard M12 connectors and cables. A universal pipe clip is included for secure and flexible mounting.

No calculations needed.
Configuration is fully software-based using IO-Link tools such as “LR-Device” and the corresponding IODD file. Users can easily define measurement ranges for temperature, pressure, or other physical parameters.

The IOC 074 handles the scaling automatically and supplies pre-processed values to the control system – with no need for manual conversions or additional hardware. This makes it a user-friendly solution that integrates seamlessly into existing infrastructures and significantly simplifies commissioning.

Future-ready retrofit.
For machine builders, plant operators, or retrofit projects in manufacturing, the IOC 074 delivers real added value: analog sensors can be upgraded to IO-Link with minimal effort. This not only enables integration into modern control systems but also enhances process transparency and operational efficiency. This is a smart, straightforward, and cost-effective path toward digitalization in industrial environments - a practical answer to the challenges of connected manufacturing.

Monitoring at the bar!

Off-grid monitoring solution for remote Cornish location.

The Loe Bar in Cornwall is a shingle and flint bank that separates the sea from Loe Pool, presenting an unusual set of challenges in both flood risk management and environmental protection. In the following article, Rob Rhyder from Nivus explains here how a bespoke monitoring solution was developed for the Environment Agency (EA) to meet the specific requirements of this unique location.

Background.
Situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in Cornwall, Loe Pool is fed by the river Cober and a number of smaller streams. Both the pool and the bar are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to their unique wildlife and habitat.

As the most southerly town on the island of Great Britain, Helston sits on the banks of the River Cober, upstream of Loe Pool, and has experienced significant flooding in the past. Loe Pool is Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake, protected by Loe Bar which is approximately half a mile in length. However, the bar is geographically remote and exposed to the ferocity of the Atlantic Ocean, so environmental monitoring equipment needs to be able to operate in harsh conditions, without mains power, and with limited communications connectivity.

Historically, Helston’s flood risk resulted from backing up in the Loe Pool and the River Cober, so alleviation measures primarily included the emergency creation of a relief channel in the bar. However, this was obviously a hazardous operation, so in the 1980s and engineered outflow was created in the form of a concrete pipe, installed to operate as an overflow for the pool. The pipe allowed excess water to drain from the pool through the bar, but was overwhelmed by river flows during high flow events. This necessitated expensive and invasive over-pumping operations that also had a significant lead-in time to bring all the equipment to such a remote site. In addition, as a result of high tides and extreme weather, the outfall of the pipe was largely blocked by sand and shingle, which had to be removed during periods of flood risk. This process was inefficient, costly and time-consuming, so a second engineered outfall was developed.

Engineered outflow solution.
The second, more advanced outflow was built in 2020 to largely eliminate the requirement for over-pumping. The additional capacity provided by the second pipe meant that the pool drains by gravity rather than costly and carbon-intensive pumping operations. “The new outflow featured penstocks, pumps, flow monitors and remote communications, and was developed to provide a number of important advantages,” says Will Hancock, Project Lead at the EA.

Level and flow monitors were installed in the River Cober, the Loe Pool and in the new outfall pipe. “This provided us with the ability to monitor the site remotely,” Will explains, “which meant that less site visits were necessary, lowering project costs and carbon footprint, and enabling us to respond to flood risk in a faster and more timely manner.”

The new monitoring system was designed to detect the excessive accumulation of water in the pool, so that the second outflow could be implemented when necessary. Under such circumstances, an excavator is used to expose and open the outfall cover before the sluice gate is opened and the pumps are allowed to remove water from the pool, for discharge to the beach. Over the last 5 years, the second outfall has been opened on two occasions.

New flow monitoring technology.
Prior to the installation of the new monitoring system from Nivus, flow was measured in Helston and in the discharge pipes with a traditional Doppler flow meter, and the failure of one of these units provided the EA with an opportunity to review and upgrade the monitors.

Explaining the evaluation process, Will Hancock says: “These measurement instruments perform a critically important function. Not only do they help manage the Loe Pool to lower flood risk, they also feed data into our flood forecasting model, so it was essential that we utilise accurate, reliable instrumentation.”

The EA has extensive experience with flow measurement technologies, including the cross-correlation method from Nivus, so it was determined that this would be the appropriate solution for the discharge pipes and the river monitor. The key advantage to this area velocity flow measurement technique over the instruments which it replaced is that it provides a 3-dimensional flow profile that is calculated in real-time to provide reproducible and verifiable flow values in full or partially filled channels or pipes. Older Doppler methods are less accurate because they only measure 2-dimensional flow.

The method utilises particles, minerals or gas bubbles which act as reflectors within the water body. Reflections are saved as images or echo patterns, and compared with a further scan which is conducted a few milliseconds later. Velocity is determined by measuring the beam angle of the positions of unambiguously identifiable reflectors. The method produces highly accurate readings without the need for additional calibration.

Explaining the background to the decision to invest in a cross-correlation solution, Will says: “The Nivus equipment has been assessed by the EA, and we now run both fixed and portable versions of the technology. Nivus is also a Framework Partner, so the procedure for implementing this solution was relatively simple, despite the specific challenges that this site presented.”

Uniquely challenging environment at Loe Bar.

As a remote location Loe Bar does not benefit from easy access to utilities, so it was necessary for the monitoring solution to be able to operate off-grid; solar/battery power was therefore adopted. The solution also needed to be sufficiently rugged to be unaffected by its proximity to the beach. “Nivus proposed a complete low-power solution, which calculated the power requirements and specified the solar generation capacity that would be necessary to ensure continuous monitoring in all weathers,” Will explains. “The solar panels were fitted at an angle to the sea, which was less ideal for power generation, but necessary to avoid potential damage from sand-blasting.”

Special low-power versions of the Nivus equipment were also deployed. For example, a Nivus NF750 transmitter employs low-power electronics, and consumption is minimised by setting the monitor to sleep, then wake up after 15 minutes to take a measurement, and then return to sleep mode.

For redundancy purposes, two Nivus CS2 bed-mounted, cross-correlation sensors were fitted in each of the discharge pipes, and the same dual-sensor redundancy arrangements were established in the river flow monitor at Helston, albeit in a cross-channel configuration.

The EA’s standard remote communication equipment was installed inside a kiosk along with the transmitter, a multiplexer, rechargeable batteries and a solar power regulator.

Access to the monitoring site is also limited. The closest that EA vehicles can access is 200m away, so any site visits would necessitate manual portability for any necessary equipment. Access to the monitoring locations within the pipes is also potentially hazardous – necessitating breathing apparatus and other PPE. Fortunately, therefore, the newly installed monitoring system does not require regular service or calibration.

Summary.
Nivus installed the new monitoring system in March 2025, and Will says: “The performance to-date has been good – there have been no outages and there have been no requirements for a site visit. We performed manual checks on the monitors using a portable NivuFlow Stick and they are monitoring very accurately, representing a significant improvement on their predecessors. It is also comforting to know that we have the redundancy measures in place.”

Looking forward, Will says: “Given the importance of the Loe Bar as an ecological asset, and of flood management in Helston, we are delighted with the performance of the monitoring system, and will be applying for the Loe Pool and Bar to be recognised as a ‘Strategically Important Asset’.

“At the EA, we are accustomed to managing remote sites, but Loe Bar is probably one of our most challenging locations, so it has been gratifying to be able to establish a robust, reliable, and off-grid solution to meet the twin goals of environmental protection and flood risk reduction.”
