Deep-space motion.

Phytron GmbH* is a globally leading specialist in automation solutions for harsh industrial, extreme and aerospace and deep-space environments. One of the latest phySPACE space-certified applications has been recently delivered to the University of Bern - Switzerland, where specially engineered stepper motors are used on a high-precision laser-based mass spectrometer scheduled to land near the Moon’s south pole in 2029. The instrument is part of the payload for the Blue Ghost Mission 4, by Firefly Aerospace (USA) which encompasses NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative that enables the delivery of scientific payloads to the Moon. The spectrometer will examine the lunar south pole’s surface for chemical and isotopic composition. This research aims to advance our knowledge of the Moon’s geochemistry and foster an increased understanding of the solar system's origins and resources for future missions. As part of the design requirements Phytron provided the stepper motor housings in precision machined titanium alloy with a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) gold coating applied by the University of Bern’s research team. This gold layer is more than just an attractive feature—it plays a crucial thermal role by preventing excessive radiated heat transfer from the motor to nearby assemblies that require optical stability. Consequently, most of the heat is carried away through conduction rather than radiation, helping to protect sensitive neighbouring systems.

Extreme environmental conditions for space motion control.
Space-bound motors and actuators must operate reliably within a range of harsh environmental conditions. These demanding settings can be defined by one, or a combination, of the following factors:

  • Extreme Temperatures: The operating environment may expose the motor to extremely low temperatures as low as -270⁰C, or extremely high temperatures reaching up to +300⁰C.
  • Ultra-High Vacuum: Motors must withstand vacuum levels that can reach 10-11 Torr. Such conditions require careful consideration for undesired gas emissions from materials and components.
  • Ionising Radiation: Drive systems are subject to ionising radiation, which may deteriorate materials and mechanisms. Exposure levels can be as high as 108 Rad.
  • Aggressive Environmental Conditions: Certain applications require motors or actuators to be hermetically sealed to protect against contamination and ensure operational integrity.
  • Minimal weight: In addition to their resilience, phySPACE drive designs are optimised for size and weight, contributing to overall mission payload efficiency.

These challenges define the rigorous requirements for motion control systems used in space exploration, demanding the highest standards of engineering and manufacturing to ensure dependable performance throughout mission lifetimes. Phytron’s products and processes meet strict European Cooperation for Space Standardisation (ECSS) requirements confirming they can withstand space flight environments.

Stepper motor technology.
Whether harsh industrial, extreme, or space application environments, microstepping motors stand out as the primary technological drive solution for Phytron. Their unique design, which eliminates direct contact between the rotor and stator components, results in minimal wear and ensures ongoing reliability. CFO of automation leader.

The Supervisory Board of the Endress+Hauser Group has appointed Christian Mäder to succeed CFO Dr Luc Schultheiss, who is to retire as planned on 1 February 2027 after 28 years with Endress+Hauser. To ensure a smooth transition, Christian Mäder will join the Swiss group in mid-2026.

Christian Mäder is currently CFO of the Swiss Komax Group, a publicly listed manufacturer of cable processing machines. Previously, he was CFO of the Artemis Group, where he also served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Artemis Asset Management Group, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Franke, a kitchen system manufacturer owned by Artemis. He held other positions at the Swisslog Group, which is active in logistics automation, the consulting firm KPMG and the engineering firm Colenco, part of the former Swiss energy group Motor-Columbus. Christian Mäder is 56 years old and a Swiss citizen.

The future CFO of Endress+Hauser is business oriented and is known for his integrity and pragmatism. “As a family-owned company, we were looking for someone for this position who would take on responsibility beyond finance,” says Endress+Hauser Supervisory Board President Matthias Altendorf. CEO Dr Peter Selders adds: “Christian Mäder brings with him extensive expertise and many years of experience as CFO, both in family-owned and publicly listed companies. He has an eye for detail while keeping the big picture in mind.”

Renewal of the Executive Board initiated.
Endress+Hauser recently announced further changes to the Executive Board. Chief Information Officer (CIO) Pieter de Koning and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dr Andreas Mayr will retire in the first half of 2026. Dr Mirko Lehmann has taken on the new position of Chief Technology Officer, which also includes the responsibilities of the previous CIO. Professor Katja Windt will succeed as the COO. Helena Svensson will become the Group’s new Chief Human Resources Officer.

Endress+Hauser is using the changes to the Executive Board to reorganize responsibilities at the top management level and thus sharpen its focus. In addition to CEO Peter Selders, the seven-member committee continues to include Chief Sales Officer Laurent Mulley and General Counsel Dr Heiner Zehntner.

Groundbreaking for new production building.

Sensirion held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new production building in Stäfa (CH) on in October 2025. The modern production facility, featuring highly classified cleanrooms for the semiconductor industry, will be built on Laubisrütistrasse over the next two and a half years. This project, together with the acquisition of land at Moritzberg for an additional office building, underscores the long- term commitment of the sensor manufacturer to its Stäfa site and secures more than 800 jobs in the region.

Their existing production building at full capacity and cannot accommodate any additional production facilities. To ensure reliable and on-time delivery in the future, Sensirion is therefore creating the capacity it needs for further growth, technological development and greater production reliability with the new building. As a systemically important supplier with long-term customer contracts, Sensirion has an obligation to guarantee maximum security of supply. Some key customers also require a redundant production site.

The new production building will also require the construction of a new office building for workstations, as additional engineers will be needed to handle the gradual expansion of production facilitated by the new building. This is why the property at Moritzberg was purchased. It will provide the space for the high-tech core processes, including their development and production, at the headquarters in Stäfa.

Sustainable building technology.
The new production building F will be integrated into the site map of all Sensirion buildings at the Stäfa site. Covering an area of 11,000 m2, it will house, in addition to high-tech cleanrooms, a logistics area with delivery facilities, technical rooms and parking spaces on two underground levels. It is right by and connected via walkway to the main building A at Laubisrütistrasse 50, which houses the reception, the canteen with roof terrace, and office and laboratory spaces.

The building will meet the Minergie P sustainability standard. The materials used in the building and its construction will also comply with the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) Gold certification standard. The surrounding area, including by the bus stop, will be upgraded with a tree-lined avenue along Laubsrütistrasse and a fountain.

Reducing flood risk.

A small network of five remote cameras has been installed to enhance the monitoring of key flood infrastructure at Schaffhausen, a municipality in the north of Switzerland. Located in the foothills of the Jura mountains, the area is exposed to flood risk so it is important that flood defence staff are provided with fast, accurate information so that they can respond quickly and appropriately.

The challenge.
SH POWER maintain the energy and water networks for Schaffhausen, including the hydro-electric power station on the River Rhine in the city. Part of their remit is to monitor and maintain the area’s flood defence infrastructure. Endress and Hauser water level monitors had already been installed, but during flood risk situations it is vital that managers have access to detailed information on the factors affecting water level readings. The challenge at Schaffhausen was therefore to not just verify water level readings at key locations, but to also provide flood managers with better site-specific information and advance knowledge of potential flood situations.

The solution.
Meteor Communications worked with the team from SH POWER to evaluate the potential monitoring locations. This led to the deployment of Meteor’s MRC-RPS-C Pillar system cameras at the selected locations.


The MRC-RPS-C Pillar system is a complete, self-contained camera housed in a stainless-steel enclosure and powered by a small solar panel. This enables carbon-neutral, autonomous operation with no ongoing maintenance requirement.

All five cameras were installed and commissioned by Meteor and SH POWER engineers during a single day in March 2024. Each camera was pre-configured for site and equipped with a roaming SIM for reliable network connectivity. The cameras were set to provide scheduled images every hour, with the ability to deliver additional images on demand or when triggered by local flood conditions. Images are compressed to ensure reliable transmission, even when cellular coverage is poor - during storm events for example. Communication is via 4G, 3G or GPRS and image visualisation is provided by the MeteorCloud® platform - a secure web portal for viewing camera images, diagnostics and historic imagery.

The benefits.
Remote visibility of critical structures provides a wide range of benefits because cameras can verify water level readings and often show the causes of water rising. For example, a camera may show that a drainage channel is blocked, or that a level monitor is damaged, which allows flood prevention managers to quickly deploy appropriate staff and equipment.

By providing visibility of site conditions, the cameras help SH POWER to detect potential flooding incidents at an early stage. They also enable the remote assessment of risk so that staff can determine whether a site visit is necessary and safe, and if so, when that should be, how many people will go and what equipment will be required. This helps avoid unnecessary site visits, leaving staff and resources available for the most urgent requirements. It also reduces costs and lowers the carbon footprint of operations.

The cameras also provide a complete overview of the river system, allowing SH POWER to assess potential risks better and faster.

Discharge monitoring ensures risks continually assessed.

The installation of a heavy transformer at an alpine location presented the Swiss company BKW with a number of unusual transport issues. Having overcome these challenges, BKW engineers detected small, but rapidly declining discharges after the transformer had been installed. Under normal circumstances they might have considered returning the transformer to the factory, but given the complexity and cost of doing so, a Vaisala OPT100 Optimus™DGA instrument was fitted to monitor the transformer continuously.

“Our initial tests showed that the transformer was working well,” explains BKW primary engineer Lukas Eggimann. “However, the detection of discharges, no matter how small, represented a potential risk, so the online DGA monitor was fitted to ensure that alerts would be issued if any abnormalities developed within the transformer.”

Alpine transformer challenges.
In response to increasing demand, and to increase the security and resilience of the power supply in the Gstaad region of Switzerland, an additional 75 MVA transformer 220 kV / 50 kV was required. However, the installation site was located high in the Alps with challenging access issues. For example, it would be necessary to climb steep roads and to cross bridges that are not designed for such heavy loads.

Two attached trailers were necessary to carry the transformer, along with a self-propelled vehicle, resulting in a total payload of 123 tonnes, which exceeded the capacity of some bridges. For example, it was not possible to avoid a narrow bridge with a 32-tonne limit, so substantial reinforcement had to be implemented prior to the transformer’s arrival (see photo right).

Ensuring transformer reliability.
Following installation, BKW’s transformers are thoroughly inspected by the company’s in-house diagnostic team, as well as the Technical Commission for High Voltage Issues (FKH). Partial discharges were detected during these assessments, although a strongly decreasing trend was observed over 4 to 5 hours. “There are a number of potential causes of these discharges,” Lukas explains. “For example, tiny fragments of metal could be present as a result of welding activity during manufacture of the compartment, or the discharges might be caused by other factors such as voids, bubbles or moisture. Whatever the reason, the concern is that they might later develop into serious problems resulting in transformer failure.”

The transformer had tested perfectly in the factory, the discharges were reducing rapidly during on-site measurement, and the costs and complexity of returning the transformer to the factory were prohibitive, so, in order to avoid any potential risk, the Vaisala DGA monitor was installed.

Why monitor continuously?
The traditional method for checking the performance status of transformers is to manually collect oil samples once per year for laboratory analysis. This spot sampling method provides an indication of dissolved gases and oil quality at one moment in time. In contrast, continuous DGA monitors are able to detect problems instantaneously – before they become serious. Continuous monitors are also able to reveal trends so that users can correlate gas levels with transformer load, for example.

The Vaisala OPT100 Optimus™ DGA can be installed in less than two hours and with autocalibration and IR reference measurement, the instrument is able to deliver reliable gas trending data. Vacuum gas extraction eliminates fluctuation caused by oil temperature or pressure, and hermetically sealed optics prevent sensor contamination. Moisture and hydrogen are measured directly in the oil with a capacitive thin-film polymer HUMICAP® sensor and solid-state sensors. Importantly, the OPT100 measures the total dissolved gas pressure of the oil and detects any air leaks in sealed transformers without the requirement to monitor oxygen – which can be a misleading measurement.

“The OPT100 is a risk reduction tool,” explains Vaisala’s Andreas Hilgers. “In Gstaad, BKW are using it to ensure that the very slight concerns revealed by the post-installation tests, are mitigated by reliable continuous monitoring. We have some customers that use Vaisala DGA monitors on all of their new transformers, and other users who only install them where, say, the transformer passes FAT tests, but not the site acceptance test.”

The OPT100 can be incorporated into power companies’ SCADA systems, but it is also able to provide secure standalone communications. Lukas says, “This is an important feature for cybersecurity because the addition of an instrument such as this should not provide an additional entry point for hackers.”

The ease of installation was also an attractive feature for Lukas. “Of course, it was good that we were able to install the OPT100 quickly and easily,” he explains. “But the typical lifespan of a transformer is 40 to 60 years, so it is equally important that the monitor can be removed easily at a later stage.”

Performance to-date.
The OPT100 was initially installed in 2022, and since that time both the transformer and the DGA monitor have performed well with no sign of any abnormalities. Good correlation has been shown between the OPT100 measurements and the results from samples taken and tested by FKH, and there have been no indications of increased gas levels in the transformer oil.

The fleet of BKW transformers is in very good condition, and is monitored regularly by offline diagnostics and oil sampling for analysis. If transformers exhibit any abnormalities, the monitoring interval is shortened as a first step, and if concerns remain, the installation of an OPT100 would be considered. “Our risk reduction strategy is therefore to take action when any abnormalities are detected – much like human healthcare,” Lukas says. “Continuous DGA monitors therefore represent an essential tool in our risk management strategy, and the OPT100 has been shown to deliver the reliability and peace of mind that we need – especially when the access road has a 32-tonne limit!”

Gas analysis expert appointed for DACH region.

A new Key Account Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) has been appointed by Servomex. Mehdi Regaya has a technical background in engineering and excellent market knowledge which will be highly beneficial in developing relationships and engaging with customers to support them further in meeting their gas analysis challenges.

With significant experience in the gas and water analysis industry, Mehdi will focus on connecting with customers both existing and potential, and driving continued success in Germany, and with channel partners in Switzerland and Austria.

He speaks fluent German, English, French and Arabic, enabling him to work with customers and channel partners directly.

Key measuring tube supplier to be acquired.

Endress+Hauser has announced plans to take over Swiss Angenstein ESTECH AG, including the company’s production site in Cernay (F), ESTECH Industries Angenstein SA. Representatives of both companies have signed a memorandum of understanding. All workplaces at the metal processing company are to be retained.
 
Angenstein ESTECH AG with its French branch has been a key supplier of measuring tubes for Endress+Hauser flowmeters for more than 25 years. The Cernay site and its roughly 50 employees are already incorporated into Endress+Hauser’s operation. “The acquisition of Angenstein ESTECH AG will allow us to retain the employees’ knowledge and integrate important work stages even deeper into our production processes,” said Christophe Stoos, managing director of the Endress+Hauser Flow France plant in Cernay.

The owner families Wiese and Helfenstein view the sale of Angenstein ESTECH AG as an ideal succession arrangement for their company. “Our focus was on preserving jobs and securing the future of the company. We believe the acquisition by Endress+Hauser represents the best possible solution,” said Martin Helfenstein, chairman of the board of directors of the Swiss-based company. 

Both sides wish to draw up and sign a purchase agreement by the end of September. The business transfer is to take effect on 1 January 2025. The main operation in Aesch, Switzerland, which also supplies Endress+Hauser Flow in Reinach (CH), will not be affected by the acquisition and will remain part of the ESTECH Group under the name ESTECH Industries Angenstein AG. 

Endress+Hauser has been producing flow measurement technology in Cernay (F) for more than 30 years. The site, which has been repeatedly expanded over the years, employs more than 500 people and primarily supplies the European market with electromagnetic, ultrasonic and vortex flowmeters. By 2026, the French sales center, which is currently based in Huningue, will also move into a new building on the company campus in Cernay.

Autonomous mobile robots.

ABB has acquired Swiss start-up Sevensense, a leading provider of AI-enabled 3D vision navigation technology for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). Sevensense was founded in 2018 as a spin-off from Swiss technical University, ETH Zurich.

“This marks a significant step towards our vision of a workplace where AI-enabled robots assist people, addressing our customers' needs for greater flexibility and intelligence amidst critical skilled labor shortages,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics and Discrete Automation. “Each mobile robot, equipped with vision and AI, scans a unique part of the building; collectively these robots complement each other’s view to form a complete map, enabling them to work autonomously in a rapidly changing environment.”

The acquisition follows ABB’s minority investment in Sevensense after it joined the company’s innovation ecosystem in 2021, the same year ABB acquired ASTI Mobile Robotics. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Following pilot customer projects in the automotive and logistics industries, ABB will integrate Sevensense’s technology into the company’s AMR portfolio, offering an unprecedented combination of speed, accuracy, and payload.

The market for mobile robots is expected to grow at 20 percent CAGR through 2026, from $5.5bn (€5bn) to $9.5bn (€8.66bn) and ABB’s AI-powered 3D vision technology is at the forefront of this growth.

Sevensense’s pioneering navigation technology combines AI and 3D vision, enabling AMRs to make intelligent decisions, differentiating between fixed and mobile objects in dynamic environments. Once manually guided, mobile robots with Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (Visual SLAM) technology create a map that is used to operate independently, reducing commissioning time from weeks to days and enabling the AMRs to navigate in highly complex, dynamic environments alongside people. Maps are constantly updated and shared across the fleet, offering instant scalability without interrupting operations and greater flexibility compared to other navigation technologies.

Today, this AI-enabled navigation technology is already transforming the automotive manufacturing and logistics sectors, delivering value through faster and more efficient operations. For automotive manufacturer Ford, Visual SLAM enabled ABB AMR’s will create efficiency gains in production sites in the US, while Michelin will use the technology in intralogistics at its factory in Spain. Other automotive manufacturers will roll out the technology in Britain, Finland and Germany.

Milestone for automation executive.

Dr Klaus Endress, CEO of the Endress+Hauser Group for many years and president of the Supervisory Board since 2014, is celebrating his 75th birthday. As previously announced, he will end his active involvement in the family-owned business at the end of the year. However, he will remain closely associated with the Group as a shareholder and chairman of the Endress Family Council.

Klaus Endress was born on 9 December 1948 as the second of eight children for company founder Dr Georg H Endress and his wife Alice. After studying industrial engineering and working in the United States, he joined his father’s company in 1979. In 1995, Klaus Endress took over as CEO and shaped the Endress+Hauser Group’s development for almost two decades. In 2014, he moved to the Supervisory Board.

Shaping the structure and culture of the Group.
To this day, much of the company bears the signature of Klaus Endress. His time as CEO saw the separation and focusing of sales and production, the introduction of uniform IT structures, the internationalization of the business and the establishment of global production based on the principle of ‘From the region, for the region’. The successful development of the Group is based on all of these factors.

Klaus Endress always paid great attention to the corporate culture. Responsibility and loyalty are core values. For him, value-based corporate management is the cornerstone of sustaining economic success. He also upholds these principles within the entrepreneurial family. Today, a family charter defines the relationship between the family and the company, introduces the younger generation to the business and strengthens the cohesion and unity of the 75-plus family members.

Involvement in many public functions.
Klaus Endress was also actively involved in politics, education, culture and business. He was engaged in the liberal FDP party in his home municipality of Reinach for almost three decades. From 2005 to 2018, he represented the interests of the canton of Baselland on the University Council of the University of Basel. In 2019, the Faculty of Economics awarded him an honorary doctorate for his commitment; in the same year, he was recognized for supporting the development of the Basel region.

From 2008 to 2017, Klaus Endress chaired the WVIB, an industrial association of more than 1,000 small and medium-sized companies in southwestern Germany. On his retirement, the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany, made the Swiss entrepreneur an honorary senator. He also received the German Federal Cross of Merit.

At the end of the year, Klaus Endress will no longer be actively involved in the company. In future, the family will be represented on the Supervisory Board by Sandra Genge and Steven Endress, two members of the third generation. Klaus Endress will remain closely associated with the company as a shareholder and chairman of the Family Council – and is looking forward to spending more time with his wife and two grown-up children. In addition, the passionate horse rider and mountain biker regularly heads outdoors and into nature, usually accompanied by Maya, the family dog.

Sensor for flow in rivers, streams etc certified.

NIVUS initially demonstrated a prototype NivuFlow Stick in 2018, and received its first order for a commercial product in 2020. This was a response to the demand for a simple but accurate tool for measuring discharge flow rates in streams, rivers and channels. The company has just announcecd that their NivuFlow Stick has received an independent calibration certificate from METAS, the Federal Institute of Metrology in Switzerland.

“This is a significant achievement,”
explains Christian Koch, Head of Product Management at NIVUS. “The calibration certificate resulted from a series of stringent tests, and follows the award of a similar verification certificate from NIWA, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand.

“We already have regulatory customers as well as water companies, consultancies, researchers and academia, but third-party verification will provide users with the assurance that they can now measure flow quickly, easily and accurately; confident in the knowledge that they are using an accurate, independently tested device.”

The NivuFlow Stick is a simple to use, portable instrument for fast, accurate flow velocity measurements utilising the ultrasonic cross-correlation measurement principle. In contrast with traditional methods, this technology is able to measure water velocities at different water depths simultaneously and with high resolution. As a result, even relatively unskilled operators are able to derive an accurate flow velocity curve quickly and easily.

Simple, intuitive operating procedures are driven via smartphone or tablet, and data are both displayed in real-time and shared on-site via WLAN. Importantly, any deviations in measurement quality by the NivuFlow Stick are also displayed, and this quality indication is stored with the data.

The system contains no wearing parts and is maintenance-free, and with lightweight components, handling in the water is effortless and safe. The NivuFlow Stick is therefore ideal for discharge measurements in streams and small rivers, as well as for checking the accuracy of fixed flow monitoring equipment.

Large switch contract for train.

A large Swiss-based train builder has selected Westermo as network platform provider for their new generation tram-trains. The contract runs for three years, with a total contract value estimated to about 85 million SEK (€7.56m). Westermo is to provide its Viper switches for the onboard data networks supporting both train control and management as well as passenger information systems.

"This strategic contract further solidifies Westermo's position as a market leader in providing cutting-edge onboard network solutions," says Jenny Sjödahl, CEO of Westermo. "Westermo's extensive portfolio of rail-certified solutions for both critical and non-critical onboard systems, combined with its technical expertise and a collaborative approach, paved the way for this deal."

Westermo will supply several models of its compact EN 50155-certified Viper Ethernet switches, powered by Westermo’s WeOS operating software, to manage the onboard data networks on the trams. The trams feature a fully digital vehicle control system with integrated collision warning and support for transfer of telemetry data for predictive maintenance.

“We are delighted that the customer has decided to extend its collaboration with Westermo. This platform contract demonstrates the trust and confidence they have in our resilient onboard network solutions and industry expertise," says Kim Dong Nguyen, global key account manager at Westermo. Celebrating seventy years of measurement and automation technology.

Endress+Hauser is heading into its special anniversary year with momentum. In 2022 the measurement and automation technology specialist increased consolidated sales by almost 17 percent to more than 3.3 billion euros. Nearly 16,000 people are employed worldwide by the Group. The family-owned Swiss company also has a confident outlook for 2023, a year in which it is celebrating its 70th birthday.

From start-up to global player.

On 1 February 1953, Georg H Endress and Ludwig Hauser officially registered their enterprise. The company has since grown from a two-man operation to a leading global provider of process and laboratory instrumentation, automation solutions and services. The Group boasts sales and support organizations in 125 countries and manufactures in all major economic regions, thus making the family-owned company a genuine global player.

Strong growth, positive outlook.
“2022 was marked by strong growth. We continued to reliably support our customers despite strained supply and logistics chains,” reports CFO Dr Luc Schultheiss. Thanks to a further increase in incoming orders, Endress+Hauser is heading into its 70th anniversary year with strong momentum. “We expect double-digit sales growth in 2023 as well,” says the CFO. The company is looking to create new jobs around the world and is planning to invest heavily in buildings and equipment.

Focus on long-term success.
Endress+Hauser has nearly doubled its sales volume in the last ten years and grew its headcount by more than 50 percent. Coming round the mountain - safely!

Operating the world’s steepest cogwheel railway!

The Pilatus-Bahnen railway was built over 130 years ago and is still the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. The train climbs the path from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm (CH), with passengers able to view flowering alpine meadows, striking rock formations and snowfields. The railway has become one of Switzerland's most successful tourist attractions. Because of its popularity and large number of passengers, the railway needed larger and faster rail vehicles equipped with modern technology. Reliable and robust data network technology from Westermo was chosen to support the operation of these new trains.

Reliable data communication.
The train control system used in the original trains was based on mechanical and electromechanical control elements. For the new larger and faster trains, a modern, electronic train control system from Actemium Schweiz AG LeitTec (Actemium) was installed. In order to establish a connection between trackside control units and moving trains, reliable wireless data communication was required.

A network that offers high levels of availability is essential for automatic train operation and communication-based train control systems, such as the PbS (position-based signalling) developed by Actemium and used on Pilatus-Bahnen railway. With the exceptionally high reliability demands, a wireless network solution developed specifically for train-to-ground communication was required. Westermo was chosen for the project by Pilatus and Actemium. Westermo's extensive experience in developing high-availability data networks for railway systems and its broad range of robust data communication products that meet the reliability and availability requirements were critical factors in this decision.

"We chose Westermo because the collaboration was constructive and very engaging right from the start of our discussions. A project like this one has never been built before and is essentially a prototype. To be able to accomplish this project, we needed partners like Westermo who actively contribute their know-how and support us with planning. Ongoing project changes were always supported and professionally implemented by Westermo. We could count on them at all times," said Patrick Blaser, Operations Manager and Member of the Executive Board at Pilatus.

Secure data network.
Westermo engineers designed, delivered and installed the data network directly on the mountain in close collaboration with Actemium. Based on a redundant Ethernet ring architecture, the network consists of wireless and wired Westermo devices designed for maximum reliability.

The network had to balance two critical requirements. While high technical requirements had to be met, infrastructure costs had to be optimised to the greatest extent possible, at the same time. Network security also played a very significant role in the planning. The ICT minimum standard, the Swiss government's cyber security recommendations for critical infrastructures, was also taken into account. It was important to include network security in the planning process from the beginning and to implement it gradually. Through meticulous planning, an encrypted data network with several security zones, monitoring and surveillance systems was created.

Redundant Ethernet architecture.
FRNT (fast recovery network topology), Westermo's own ring protocol for high-availability Ethernet networks provided the network redundancy. The ring architecture ensures data transfer via other paths in the unlikely event of a device or network link failure. Furthermore, to ensure that the network can be operated securely and is protected from the outside, a number of security functions, such as data encryption, port security, active firewalls and other mechanisms for a secure data network, were already taken into account in the concept and later implemented.

Westermo Ibex-RT-370 infrastructure access points were installed trackside to provide WLAN connection to the vehicles, along with redundant routing switches with firewall functionality in the stations. The network onboard the trains is based on Westermo Viper-212A managed routing switches and Ibex-RT-320 wireless clients that communicate over Wi-Fi with the trackside access points. This train-to-ground communication network setup ensures reliable communication between the trains and the control system.

In addition, a collision warning system between the trains was implemented using Westermo wireless technology. A WLAN connection is automatically established between two vehicles when they approach each other. This connection allows the steering systems to exchange data, enabling them to travel virtually in tandem and avoid collisions.

There is often over 10 metres of snow on the Pilatus summit in winter. In order to protect the infrastructure from these masses of snow and water, it is partially dismantled in autumn and reassembled in spring. In order to simplify and streamline this process, a special `trackside radio equipment (TRE) box was developed and implemented by Westermo, containing WLAN access points, antennas and power splitters. These TRE boxes were delivered to Pilatus Bahnen fully wired, tested and configured, allowing for cost and time savings during the installation and commissioning. Thanks to a sophisticated assembly and disassembly system, the boxes can be easily dismantled in the autumn and reassembled in the spring. This also ensures that the antennas mounted on the TRE box are correctly aligned again after reassembly.

Mount Pilatus is an extremely unique place, with its highest point over 2000 metres above sea level and exposed to extreme geological weather conditions. To ensure the installation was successful, all companies involved had to work closely together. Occasionally, work could not be carried out as planned due to geological or weather conditions, requiring a high degree of collaboration and flexibility.

Peter Tschan, Project Manager at Actemium, a key participant in the project, states: "Throughout the project process, we were able to rely on Westermo and benefit from their expertise in secure, industrial networks and WLAN systems. Together, we developed network concepts with integrated cyber-security. Additionally, Westermo was on-site during commissioning to support us. This saved us a lot of time and money. We will also rely on Westermo for future projects since reliable data networks are the foundation of our success."

Telecommunication test laboratory launched.

Anritsu Corporation and its authorized Swiss distributor YOTAVIS AG have launched the Swiss Communication Competence Center (SCCC), an open telecommunication test laboratory that allows companies and engineers to test new products and innovations for quality, performance, and compatibility.

The laboratory, located in the Switzerland Innovation Park in Biel/Bienne (CH), offers an extensive range of measurement equipment, as well as a team of telecommunications technology specialists. These facilities allow to conduct a wide variety of measurement tasks within the neutral and confidential confines of the SCCC. The SCCC is a creative space that will accelerate the use of the best new modern communication technologies in rapidly developing products such as autonomous cars, drones, wearable devices, smart IoT devices and much more.

Riccardo Rossetti, the General Manager of Anritsu EMEA GmbH says: “Testing is at the core of ensuring quality, so we decided to bring our best Anritsu technologies to the SCCC to help the entire ecosystem with product development and enable faster time to market for their new innovative solutions. At every stage, from blueprint to a high performing and reliable product, engineers and companies from Switzerland and Europe need a variety of test methods to verify the performance of their devices. Thanks to the SCCC, which is fully equipped with an extensive range of ‘ready to use’ instruments, these tests can be done faster and at lower costs.

The on-demand equipment in the SCCC can emulate 3G, 4G, and 5G, as well as WLAN and Bluetooth or IoT wireless networks. For wired LAN and WAN networks, the SCCC allows the measurement of high-speed links, providing data on error performance, quality of fibre links, and much more.

New premises emphases growth path.

More space for the production of flow measurement technology and the development of IIoT solutions.

Over the past five years the number of employees at the Endress+Hauser's Reinach location in the Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft has grown by 20 percent to more than 2,000. At the same time, the number of units produced has significantly increased and the digital solutions portfolio has expanded. In order to simultaneously meet the new demands of the work environment, vocational training positions and digitalization, the measurement and automation technology specialist invested 60 million Swiss francs in the Reinach campus.

After beginning work on the foundations in 2019, Endress+Hauser is celebrating the opening of the nearly 150-meter-long building in Reinach in July (2022). The construction plan included the use of available property and an existing building. The new facility, which boasts more than 25,000 square meters of space, equivalent to around four soccer fields, was built with roughly 19,000 cubic meters of concrete and 2,200 tons of reinforced steel and other materials.

The new building is home to Endress+Hauser Flow, the product center for flow measuring technology, as well as Endress+Hauser Digital Solutions, which is responsible within the Group for all issues related to digital communication and automation solutions. The first wave of employees has already moved into the facility.

Production expansion and additional jobs.
This is a response to the ongoing demand for high-quality instrumentation and solutions for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) environments in the process industry. Liquids and gases must always be monitored, measured and settled with a high degree of accuracy. This is being driven, among other things, by increasingly strict government regulations and growing requirements on quality and environmental protection around the world.

Endress+Hauser Flow has reacted to this development, expanded its portfolio and doubled the number of units produced over the past decade. The consequence is continuous expansion of the production capacity and the creation of additional jobs. With the most recent developments, the family company is making a clear commitment to Reinach and the Basel region (CH) where the Group is firmly rooted.

Focus on collaboration.
As a result of the expansion, around 1,050 employees will move across all buildings. The additional space will create more collectively used workspace. “In the spirit of ‘New Work’, we are implementing activity-based working. Different work areas will be available for different activities, meaning that our employees can choose the space best suited to their individual tasks,” says Mirko Lehmann, Managing Director of Endress+Hauser Flow.

Special coworking zones such as Innovation Labs or project zones furthermore offer different departments the opportunity to collaborate on longer-term projects. Employees can choose between a permanent or shared desks. Bright, friendly spaces and a modern infrastructure have a positive impact on the work environment as well.

Learning-conducive training environment.
For Endress+Hauser, laying the groundwork for the future also means investing in the employees of tomorrow. The new building brings training and education into the heart of operation and offers sufficient space for areas conducive to learning with workshops, labs and training rooms, thus allowing an increase in the number of apprenticeship positions and vocational careers. To date, 43 apprentices have been trained in eight areas. Beginning in August, nearly 50 apprentices will be trained in 11 vocations. This number is expected to grow over the next five years.

Around 4,000 annual visitors can look forward to the new plant tour and hospitality concept. This concept consists of a redesigned reception area and a new visitor center including “Flow Experience”, an integrated 2,000-square-meter area where the Endress+Hauser brand and flow instrument portfolio can be experienced before taking a tour of the plant.

Sustainable energy concept.
Endress+Hauser is furthermore using the new building to align its ongoing business growth even more closely with its ecological and social responsibilities. In light of the goal of the Endress+Hauser Flow sustainability strategy to operate its buildings in Reinach in a CO2-neutral manner by the year 2030, high value is being placed on climate-friendly facilities management. As part of the energy concept, for example, waste heat is stored in a stratified storage tank for warm water and then used for heating. A comprehensive energy monitoring system using instruments from the company’s own portfolio also helps to continuously optimize operation of the buildings.

Large photovoltaic systems were installed on the roof of the new building, which boast a peak capacity of 365 kilowatts, enough to cover the annual electricity needs of around 75 single-family homes. In Reinach, Endress+Hauser now has photovoltaic systems covering more than 3,700 square meters with a total peak capacity of roughly 1 megawatt, making the company one of the largest solar power producers in the Basel region. The roof is also home to two bee colonies and various bee-friendly flowers, a project that contributes to the preservation of biodiversity as these small insects are considered central Europe’s most important plant pollinators.

Apprenticeship program win for sensor manufacturer.

Sensirion is one of the best employers in Switzerland – not only among permanent employees, but also among apprentices. Following Great Place to Work® naming Sensirion the second best employer in Switzerland, the high-tech company has now also received Great Start! certification.

Sensirion’s commitment to apprentice training is highly valued internally and has now also been honored with the Great Start! certification. All apprentices say that Sensirion is overall a very good place for an apprenticeship. We are very proud of this 100% approval.

Sensirion currently supervises 20 apprentices. Apprentices are given responsibility and trust. They are treated like permanent employees right from the start, are well integrated into their teams and can work on exciting projects. Cohesion among the apprentices and their well-being are top priorities at Sensirion. For this reason, an apprentice excursion, an apprentice camp and monthly meetings among the apprentices are organized every year. More results from the Great Start! survey show that credibility and open communication are integral parts of the corporate DNA at Sensirion. Sensirion has once again been named one of the top employers in Switzerland by Great Place to Work® in the Large Company category. Sensirion also received the special Crisis Management award for bold leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. These awards reflect Sensirion’s unique corporate culture, which is shaped by the values of “teamwork”, “top performance” and “fairness and honesty”.

Over the course of its 20-year success story, as it has moved from an ETH Zurich startup to a global market leader in sensor solutions, Sensirion has been consistently committed to offering an excellent workplace. The company stands out thanks to its unbeatable combination of innovation, a unique corporate culture, and a dynamic startup mentality. This is the third year that Sensirion has taken part in Great Place to Work®’s award ceremony – and the third year that it has ranked in the top three. Participation – and the results of the survey – offer valuable insights into the continuing development of Sensirion’s workplace culture.
