Seeing the Unseen: Thermal imaging in the tunnel.

In the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) sector, the ultimate metric of success is not a headline-making emergency response - it is preventing an initial anomaly from escalating into a disaster.

From preventing catastrophic fires in underground infrastructure to helping municipalities optimize complex intersections, Teledyne Flir has established itself as a deeply cemented pillar of transport safety. Following its acquisition of traffic technology pioneer Traficon, Teledyne Flir’s incident-detection technology—encompassing thermal imaging, video analytics, and advanced detection systems—is now deployed in more than 4,000 tunnels worldwide.

In a recent comprehensive interview with Zag Daily (publication for sustainable mobility and innovation), Stefaan Pinck, Vice President of Global Business Development at Teledyne Flir, outlined how advances in sensing and analytics are fundamentally changing how operators manage traffic, protect vulnerable road users, and prepare for a connected, autonomous future.

The turning point in tunnel safety.
The imperative for rapid incident detection inside tunnels was tragically underscored in the late 1990s by the Mont Blanc tunnel fire, which claimed 39 lives. This event served as a catalyst for the industry, shifting the focus of video analytics toward automatic incident detection designed to prevent secondary accidents.

“The objective is not only to detect incidents but also to prevent secondary accidents,” explains Pinck. “If an incident is detected quickly, operators can close the tunnel, activate warning signs and alert approaching drivers before they enter a dangerous situation.”

Today, while stopped vehicles, accidents, and objects on the roadway remain the most common incidents operators monitor—with pedestrians and wrong-way drivers presenting additional, critical safety concerns—fire detection remains the most vital application.

Seconds save lives.
In the harsh, enclosed environment of a tunnel, conventional cameras and traditional fire detection systems often fall short. Traditional linear heat detection can take several minutes to trigger an alarm—a delay that allows fires to grow beyond the point of effective intervention and causes severe structural damage.

Thermal imaging bypasses these limitations. By detecting heat emitted by objects rather than relying on visible light, thermal cameras operate flawlessly in total darkness, glaring light, and heavy smoke.

“Our systems can typically detect a fire within 10 to 15 seconds,” Pinck notes. Early detection grants operators the crucial window needed to warn drivers, halt incoming traffic, and deploy emergency services before conditions deteriorate.

"Success is measured by the tunnel incidents that don’t happen rather than the incidents that make headlines."
Elevating the intersection.
Beyond subterranean environments, Teledyne Flir’s analytics are transforming above-ground traffic management. Originally utilized simply to replace inductive loops for basic vehicle presence, modern sensors now generate rich, three-dimensional tracking data.

Current systems can classify and track the real-time position, speed, and direction of pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter riders, cars, and heavy transport. This allows traffic signal controllers to make highly contextual decisions. For instance, rather than forcing a heavy goods vehicle to stop, intelligent systems can hold a green light—improving traffic flow while simultaneously reducing the elevated emissions and fuel consumption caused by large vehicles stopping and starting.

Protecting vulnerable road users (VRUs).
When adverse conditions like poor weather, deep shadows, or inconsistent street lighting make pedestrians and cyclists invisible to both drivers and visual-light cameras, thermal imaging provides an uncompromised line of sight.

As the industry moves toward vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, infrastructure-based sensing will become the ultimate safety net. While connected vehicles will increasingly broadcast their own positions, vulnerable road users cannot be expected to carry connected devices or maintain mobile phone batteries just to ensure their own safety.

“From a public policy perspective, safety systems must protect everyone, not only those who own specific devices,” says Pinck to Zag Daily. “That is where infrastructure becomes essential. It acts as an independent source of environmental awareness.”

Purpose-built for the environment. Because transport infrastructure presents unique operational extremes, Teledyne Flir designs both its hardware and analytics in-house. Tunnel systems are ruggedized against corrosive environments, water ingress, and intensive cleaning regimens.

Conversely these traffic sensors feature a compact, ball-shaped design. Originally conceived by the founder to be visually unobtrusive and mitigate public privacy concerns by avoiding a "surveillance" look, the design yields massive operational benefits. The aerodynamic shape sheds wind during storms, keeps lenses clean via airflow, prevents snow accumulation, and even stops spiders from building webs across the lens.

Ultimately, whether deployed at a bustling intersection or deep within a mountain tunnel, the technology serves a singular purpose: proactive mitigation.

"Success is measured by the tunnel incidents that don’t happen rather than the incidents that make headlines." — Stefaan Pinck

Low skew cable.

Cable specifically developed for 224 Gbps PAM4 systems.

Samtec has expanded its Eye Speed cable family to include Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax cable optimised for 224 Gbps PAM4 applications. Samtec is currently offering 32 AWG Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax for inside-the-box cable solutions, with 27 AWG in development for longer reach cabled backplane systems.

Skew is a major design concern for 224 Gbps PAM4, manifesting as delay differences within a differential pair (due to physical and electrical construction in the channel). Samtec has engaged in significant R&D as regards to the impact of skew, resulting in the development of Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax cable.

Tightly coupled, twinax cable that is co-extruded with drainless shield construction, like the Eye Speed product family, has superior skew performance (as well as impedance and insertion loss stability) even under realistic bending conditions, allowing skew to be completely under the implementer’s control. This is in contrast to other manufacturing techniques for twinax cables that are not co-extruded.

Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax was specifically developed to target applications where designers need optimal high-speed performance out to 60+ GHz Nyquist frequencies. By holding a maximum intrapair skew of 1.75 ps/m, and offering extreme signal stability, Samtec’s Hyper Low Skew Twinax has the best digital differential pair transmission line performance in the industry.

This Cable Technology includes 4 varieties: Eye Speed Twinax (3.5 ps/meter max skew; 28-36 AWG); Eye Speed Thinax (40% smaller diameter than Eye Speed Twinax, same performance; 34 AWG); Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax (1.75 ps/meter max skew; 32 AWG with 27 AWG in development); and Eye Speed ThinSETM (thin micro-coax with 0.024” outer diameter cable).

As part of Samtec’s Sudden Service® initiative, Eye Speed cables take a mix-and-match approach with Samtec’s most popular connectors. In other words, a designer can specify what connector is part of each end of the cable assembly. Some of the more popular mixed-end designs include ExaMAX® to AcceleRate® and FQSFP-D8 to NovaRay® connectors. For 224 Gbps applications, a designer could choose Si-Fly® HD Co-Packaged CPX Substrate Connector over Eye Speed Hyper Low Skew Twinax cable® to a Flyover® OSFP 224 Gbps Panel Assembly, for example.

The mix-and-match strategy allows system architects to specify Samtec high-speed cable solutions for mid-board to mid-board applications, or near-chip/on-chip to front panel, or ASIC-adjacent to the backplane. Whether PCB-attach or Direct-attach type cable assemblies, Samtec’s HDR Group

Contour measurement.

The new Leuze  ROD 300 series of laser scanners for accurate contour measurement and ROD 500 for precise AGV navigation have been introduced. These laser scanners in the ROD 300 series for contour measurement and the ROD 500 series as a high-resolution variant for navigation tasks are characterised by high scanning rates with simultaneously high angular resolution.

Whether on a conveyor or on an automated guided vehicle system: When sensors are used to detect contours, precision and attention to detail are what count. Leuze is launching two new laser scanner series that are perfectly suited for this. The devices of the ROD 300 series reliably detect contours even during fast production and logistics processes. Thanks to their high scanning rates and angular resolution, the laser scanners of the ROD 500 series are optimally suited for navigation tasks. Another advantage is the sensors' integrated window monitoring, which detects if the optics window becomes dirty. This enables predictive maintenance and contributes to high system availability.

With their high resolution of 0.025°, the laser scanners of the ROD 500 series can precisely determine the contour of parts, even with different surfaces (high-gloss or matt).

Perfection in precision.
The devices of the ROD 300/500 series scan at a frequency of up to 80 Hz. This means that moving objects are reliably detected and the data quality remains optimal even at high speeds. With their high angular resolution of 0.025° at 10 Hz , the laser scanners of the ROD 500 series determine the contour of the parts even with high-gloss or matt surfaces. The new laser scanners can be integrated into almost all production processes. Their rugged design also contributes to this: protection class IP 67, high-quality aluminum base and the built-in laser diode make the ROD 300/500 laser scanners resistant to external influences. The sensors also work in temperature ranges from -30 °C to +60 °C. This makes them suitable for applications in both the deep-freeze sector and for high-temperature requirements, such as in battery production.

The laser scanners of the ROD 500 series can create a very precise map of the environment. In ongoing logistics operation, the ROD 500 is ideally suited for collision-free navigation of the FTS via natural navigation.

Natural Navigation made easy.
The new laser scanners can also be used for navigating driverless transport systems (DTS). They create a very precise map of the environment, such as the material storage area. In logistics applications, a scanner from the ROD 500 series enables collision-free AGV navigation via natural navigation. A further benefit from the compact design of the laser scanners, with dimensions of 80 x 80 x 80mm, is that the sensors can be integrated even into the small installation spaces of mobile vehicles.

If the integrated window monitoring detects that the window is dirty, it issues a maintenance notice. The warning threshold can be adjusted. This predictive maintenance contributes to high system availability.

Helping sustainable EVs in public transport.

Smart energy company GridBeyond is to support Stagecoach, the largest bus operator in the Britain, to optimise the energy consumption of its EV fleet and integrate renewables energy in their business strategy.

The new partnership will allow Stagecoach to participate in the Capacity Market from October 2024, while looking at several other opportunities to support the grid and its energy transition goals.

The Capacity Market aims to ensure there is reliable electricity supply to meet peaks in demand, safeguarding against the possibility of blackouts if renewables sources such as those dependent on weather, are not generating enough. By participating in the Capacity Market, Stagecoach will support the grid when there is a high risk that a system stress event could occur whilst reducing the total cost of ownership from its fleet transition to EV through revenues earned by participation.

EV fleets are expanding at a fast pace in several of the world’s largest markets. This is being driven by governments and operators who are promoting electric vehicles as a key technology to curb oil use, fight climate change and air pollution.

As bus companies increase their EV operational fleets there are new opportunities to use this load not only as consumers but also as contributors to the power grid and its decarbonisation through the integration of renewables.

GridBeyond Head of EV Solutions Michael Kent said: “There are many opportunities for EV fleet operators to support the grid and become a key player in supporting the energy transition. We look forward to working together with Stagecoach and to start the Capacity Market programme. The long term contract it is a recognition of GridBeyond expertise and capabilities.”

Stagecoach Asset Management & Infrastructure Director Tony Cockcroft said: “We are pleased to be partnering with GridBeyond as we press ahead with our ambitious fleet decarbonisation plan. Using GridBeyond’s expertise in energy markets will enable us to get the most value out of our significant investment into our electric fleet.”

Hydrogen-Powered vehicle fuel efficiency & reliability.

Stable pressure delivery in all flow conditions with a longer service life

The TESCOM™ HV-7000 Series two-stage pressure-reducing regulator, from Emerson, is designed to maximize fuel efficiency and improve reliability in hydrogen-powered vehicles. Easy to install, HV-7000 Series regulators provide stable pressure delivery, high reliability, and long service life for heavy-duty vehicles powered by fuel cells or hydrogen combustion engines.

The HV-7000 features two-stage pressure reduction and a positive seal designed to deliver hydrogen to the fuel cell at optimal pressure in all flow conditions, even as the vehicle hydrogen storage tank depletes. The two-stage pressure reduction significantly lessens decaying inlet characteristic compared to single-stage regulators, while the positive seal design offers superior shut-off performance. Together, these features can minimize fueling costs, as well as the risk of downstream component failure and downtime.

“Reliable vehicles with superior fuel efficiency are valuable assets that minimize total cost of ownership and maximize road time for companies operating fleets of hydrogen-powered trucks or buses,” said Fabrice Jannet, director business development for hydrogen with Emerson’s discrete automation business. “A profitable fleet starts at the component level. That’s why the TESCOM HV-7000 Series is engineered for automotive purpose, with a range of innovative features that boost hydrogen fuel efficiency and reliability in a design that is easy for system integrators to install.”

The most common cause of regulator failure is contamination, which can damage soft goods such as seats and seals, causing leakage and vehicle downtime. HV-7000 features such as tied valve stems, integrated filters and patented redundant seals make the regulator contamination-resistant, improving vehicle service life and extending time on the road.

The redundant seal design extends cycle life if one seal experiences wear; the filter catches solid particles produced during installation before they can contact soft goods, and the tied valve stem counteracts seat contamination and wear. Preventing contamination and resulting leaks can help avoid fuel loss, safety hazards, system damage and equipment downtime.

In addition to its benefits for the vehicle user, the HV-7000 is also designed to help fuel cell system manufacturers and integrators assemble the regulator into their system as quickly as possible. The regulator is compact and lightweight, with a flat shape and mounting holes designed specifically for mounting the regulator against other flat surfaces in the system. Such easy installation helps reduce manufacturing and procurement costs and eases scale-up as production volumes increase compared to other pressure regulation technologies.

Temperature immunity.
User displays employing touchscreen interfaces must provide reliable and stable operation under temperature extremes while also coping with rapid temperature variations. Touchscreen solution provider AMT develops and supplies PCap (projected capacitive) touch panels that are specified to an automotive standard operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, and a storage temperature range of -50°C to +90°C. Temperature change is tested with thermal cycling of -40°C (30 minutes) to +85°C (30 minutes), for 100 cycles.

UV resistance.
Transportation systems and infrastructure equipment are often operated extensively in outdoor environments, and as a necessity need to be able to withstand prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. A system that is unprotected and subjected to extended UV (ultraviolet) radiation can cause yellowing, hazing, and material degradation. AMT PCap touchscreen solutions have been successfully tested to strict industry standards including accelerated UV ageing and weathering standard ASTM G154 Cycle 1 - 1,000 hours, and environmental conditions standard MIL-STD-810H Pro 1 - 1,000 hours.

Ambient light.
Light reflection in high ambient light environments can impact display image clarity and visibility. Optical bonding is used to eliminate internal air gaps which reduces internal reflections and refraction effects. AMT also offers touch panels with a Low-Reflective (LR) design, to aid and assist improved image legibility in bright light conditions.

EMC and noise immunity.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is important in all transportation applications. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations require all devices installed on aircraft to pass certification to DO-160 Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment. Employing suitable integration and firmware adjustment, AMT PCAP touch solutions can meet DO-160 Conducted RF Emission at 150KHz to 152MHz and Radiated RF Emission at 100MHz to 6000MHz test standards. AMT’s hardware and software design solutions enable excellent electromagnetic immunity for all transportation applications.

Designed for purpose.
Operator displays on public transport systems will often adopt dual-screen redundancy designs to mitigate against unexpected failure circumstances. A dual-screen operator display can incorporate two touchscreens using just one piece of integrated cover glass. The electric fields generated between the two projected capacitive (PCap) touch screens have the potential to interfere with each other. AMT have conducted many internal tests and used different signal frequencies to mitigate the problem of interference and ensure dual-screen applications can be successfully deployed.

Hydrogen production at lower cost.

Agreement for energy management system to optimize hydrogen production costs for industry and mobility.

Hynamics has signed an agreement to collaborate with ABB and test the ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® for Green Hydrogen energy management system (EMS), which was launched to market in November 2022, across Hynamics’ plants to help optimize electrical costs of hydrogen production by up to 16 percent, according to ABB modelling.*

In order to optimize production costs for low carbon and renewable hydrogen, the performance of the electrolyser process – which uses electricity from renewable sources to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen – can be improved. ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® supports this by serving every aspect of a hydrogen plant lifecycle, from simulation at design and engineering phases to real-time monitoring of energy consumption when in operation. ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® is already available for five other industrial applications.

The system provides data which can help determine optimal energy consumption levels required to produce hydrogen and minimize waste. The tool considers, among other things, the variability of electricity prices, asset availability and other associated factors.

The companies have agreed to share respective resources to determine the compatibility of their solutions. ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® for Green Hydrogen EMS will be deployed at Auxerre (F), Hynamics’ first production and distribution site in Northern Burgundy, approximately 170 km southeast of Paris. The 1 MW hydrogen station for the urban community will supply five buses of the Leo network (Transdev), as well as light commercial vehicles and trucks, removing 2,200 tons of CO2 emissions from the road each year.

“With complementary areas of expertise, the cooperation between ABB and Hynamics will enable us to accelerate the deployment of hydrogen projects on an industrial scale,” said Christelle Rouillé, General Manager of Hynamics. “The integration of ABB's world-class power management system is a necessary step to improve the performance of the water electrolysis process and thus optimize the cost of hydrogen production.”

“We have recently pioneered our ABB Ability™ OPTIMAX® system specifically for green hydrogen to help production companies overcome the challenges of electrolysis in the way of high costs and energy intensive processes,” said Bruno Roche, Global Head of Energy Transition at ABB. “This first deployment of our EMS for green hydrogen is significant and hopefully the first of many if we are to achieve our collective goal of building a resilient global hydrogen ecosystem for a clean energy future.”

The scope of the agreement also includes the deployment of the cloud for the EMS at the Hynamics operation control center, potential performance and reliability tests carried out by EDF and deployment on further Hynamics production sites in 2023.

* 16% saving has been calculated by ABB Corporate Research Center in 2022 and is based upon an optimized versus an unoptimized operation of a hydrogen plant. The results showed an estimated reduction of >14% in electricity costs and >2% in electrical consumption. Thus the lower boundary of OPTIMAX reduction of electrical cost is up to 16%.
