Source-to-rack direct current portfolio for Ai data centres.

Helps maximise energy efficiency and reduce physical footprint, alongside DC power distribution and protection technologies to enhance overall system performance.

Infinitus is a portfolio of direct current (DC) solutions designed to manage the increasing power demands of Ai data centres from ABB. The portfolio accelerates the adoption of DC architectures in data centers improving energy efficiency and reducing power infrastructure footprint, while increasing available computing capacity. ABB expects other energy-intensive industries to make the same transition.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects global data center electricity demand to more than double by 2030 and ABB estimates that approximately 25-40% of new capacity installed in 2030 could be using DC distribution. Next-generation Ai chips are expected to draw 1 MW per rack and beyond, an increase from today’s almost 200 kW, requiring a shift to DC architecture that can support performance while driving energy efficiency. With 800 VDC distribution, the footprint is more compact while eliminating redundant conversion steps and cutting heat losses of conventional alternating current (AC) systems. A recent BCG / ABB report calculated that DC distribution delivers energy efficiency gains of more than 5% and increases available space for compute racks. For a 500MW data center, a 5% efficiency gain can mean 25 MW more power for revenue-generating IT loads and more than US $300 million (€232m) in potential additional revenue per year. With 5% efficiency gains for a 500 MW data center campus, the energy savings over one year would be equivalent to powering Washington D.C. for almost a full week.

Giampiero Frisio, President of ABB’s Electrification business area, said: “ABB has pioneered DC technology for more than 25 years across several segments. We are working closely with chipmakers, hyperscale customers, supply partners and industry bodies to set the standards and the pace for the roll-out of high-efficiency DC architectures. Infinitus is the first portfolio providing the building blocks for any data center architecture - either DC native or hybrid AC/ DC - to power next-generation Ai chips efficiently. This technology will bring similar energy efficiency gains to other energy-intensive industries such as large scale manufacturing, renewables and marine operations.”

Infinitus is the industry's first integrated source-to-rack DC portfolio. At its core is ABB’s breakthrough Infinitus solid-state transformer technology, enabling sites to operate with a smaller footprint and greater energy efficiency. As the only major electrification supplier with both the world's first fully IEC-certified solid-state circuit breaker and an industry-first static medium-voltage UPS in production, ABB delivers a breadth of technology unmatched in the market.

ABB’s Infinitus DC portfolio includes five key building blocks:

  • Medium Voltage Powertrains deliver stable resilient power from the grid or on-site generation;
  • DC Sources and Power Quality converts AC to DC removing conversion from white space;
  • DC Power Distribution delivers power safely and reliably, enabling higher power density in a smaller footprint;
  • DC Power Protection provides protection for operators, iI servers and hardware from DC overcurrents;
  • Cooling Optimisation reduces energy consumption across grey and white space with DC connected variable speed drives and motors.

ABB works with customers to design solutions tailored to their specific power demands, facility layout, and energy mix. This partnership approach ensures each deployment is optimised for maximum efficiency and reliability. The Infinitus portfolio complements traditional AC systems with DC flexibility that supports customers across all power architectures while also enabling unprecedented efficiency, reliability, and scalability for AI-era data centers.

For next-generation data centers, this integrated architecture enables the high-density, high-efficiency power delivery that future Ai chips demand. With a number of main components produced in the next twelve months, the first DC-native facilities using the complete Infinitus portfolio are expected to be installed and operational within two to three years.

The portfolio launch extends support for ABB's continued collaboration with NVIDIA, first announced in October 2025, to develop 800 VDC power architectures for gigawatt-scale Ai facilities. ABB brings more than 25 years of DC experience and over 700 patents spanning renewables, power generation, energy storage, motors and drives.

Originally opened in 1974, the stadium demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be retrofitted through electrification – a challenge relevant across many building types, industries and public infrastructure.

Borussia Dortmund was the first Bundesliga club with climate goals validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The club also operates the world's most powerful photovoltaic system on a football stadium roof, with an installed capacity of up to 5 MWp – a commitment advancing further with a 3.75 MWh battery storage system planned before year-end.

Over the past years, Borussia Dortmund and ABB have worked together to modernise the stadium’s electrical infrastructure, KNX-based building automation, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and energy management systems. This work builds on SIGNAL IDUNA PARK's ISO 50001-certified energy management system, which provides a structured and independently validated framework for monitoring, measuring and continuously improving energy performance. As “Energy Management Partner,” ABB will now build on this foundation to further optimise energy use, increase operational transparency, and support Borussia Dortmund's continuous improvement of energy performance.

Central to the approach is an open, scalable architecture that integrates with existing systems and can expand across the wider BVB portfolio, from the Dortmund-Brackel training ground and academy to BVB FanWelt and future EV charging infrastructure. What is being developed at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not just relevant for the world’s most demanding live venues, but for the modernisation of complex existing buildings everywhere.

"Our partnership with ABB demonstrates how a long-standing collaboration can lead to concrete solutions that deliver strategic value for both sides. Together, we are making Signal Iduna Park more efficient and future-proof," says Benedikt Scholz, Director Internationalisation & Commercial Partnerships at BVB.

"Signal Iduna Park combines the demands of critical infrastructure with the complexity of a building that has evolved over decades,” said Mark Zwerner, VP Strategic Partnerships at ABB. “By bringing together electrification, energy management and building automation through an open, scalable architecture, we can help Borussia Dortmund improve performance while maintaining reliable operations. What we prove here can provide a blueprint for complex buildings far beyond football."

This partnership brings together two organisations committed to demonstrating that energy efficiency, operational performance and long-term resilience go hand in hand. ABB's mission to help buildings become more energy-efficient, connected and future-ready – combined with Borussia Dortmund's SBTi-validated climate targets and experience operating one of Europe's most complex and most visited properties – sets a new standard for what's possible in demanding, real-world environments.

Mission to zero progress.

Electrified, energy-efficient production upgrades improve energy productivity while strengthening operational stability .

ABB is advancing its Mission to Zero™ program at its Sasbach manufacturing site in Germany, demonstrating how on-site renewable energy, electrification and digital energy management can deliver meaningful emissions reductions while strengthening energy resilience.

The Sasbach site manufactures enclosures and energy distribution systems for local and regional markets, supporting ABB’s production footprint in Germany. As part of ABB’s global Mission to Zero™ program, the site is implementing a data-led decarbonization roadmap focused on energy efficiency, renewable electricity and smart energy management. Sasbach is one of 37 ABB sites worldwide currently participating in the program, which aims to significantly reduce operational emissions across ABB’s global footprint.

With manufacturing and production accounting for around one-fifth of global carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and accelerating electrification are critical to achieving European climate targets. The Sasbach site shows how manufacturers can reduce emissions while maintaining reliable, competitive operations.

Taken together, the actions implemented at the Sasbach site deliver total CO₂ savings of approximately 3,786 tons. This includes around 2,700 tons of CO₂ savings from the purchase of certified renewable electricity from the grid, alongside annual emissions reductions of approximately 1,086 tons of CO₂ delivered through on-site measures. Of these yearly on-site savings, around 550 tons of CO₂ per year come from on-site solar generation, which has been expanded. The site now operates 3,410 photovoltaic modules, generating around 1,500 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. This is enough to supply approximately 400 homes for a year.

On-site generation will cover close to one-third of the site’s total electricity demand, reducing exposure to volatile energy prices and enhancing long-term energy security. A newly installed transformer station ensures stable and efficient integration of the renewable electricity into the site’s power infrastructure. The remaining reductions are achieved through electrified production upgrades, energy efficiency measures, and digital energy management. Together, these actions are strengthening energy resilience and supporting stable, reliable day-to-day operations.

ABB's Sasbach Plant.
“What we are doing at Sasbach shows how Mission to Zero™ works in practice,” said Mike Mustapha, President, ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division. “By investing in on-site renewables, electrifying our processes and using digital energy management, the site is reducing emissions while also improving energy resilience and day-to-day operational stability. This kind of practical progress is what will matter most for manufacturers navigating the energy transition.”

In parallel, ABB has continued to modernize production processes to reduce energy demand at source. A new powder-coating facility has expanded production capacity while significantly lowering energy requirements. Designed across two levels, the facility incorporates heat recovery and operates with substantially lower installed heating capacity than conventional systems, supporting both efficiency gains and production reliability.

Additional efficiency measures across the site include full LED lighting in production areas, building automation via the ABB i-bus® KNX, waste heat recovery from compressed air systems, and optimized process controls. Twenty-one onsite electric vehicle (EV) charging stations support low-emission mobility for employees and visitors.

Together, these initiatives have significantly improved energy productivity compared with 2019 levels, while helping stabilize operations and reduce operating costs. ABB's Building Automation System (BMS) and energy management solutions bring these measures together, providing real-time visibility into energy use and enabling continuous improvement and data-driven decision-making that supports efficiency, resilience, and operational stability.

Building on these achievements, ABB has defined a clear roadmap for the next phase of decarbonization at Sasbach. Battery storage systems are planned to store excess solar electricity and support production during peak demand and night shifts. Gas-based heating systems are being progressively replaced with electric heat-pump solutions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels over time. The site is also evaluating the potential for on-site wind generation to further strengthen energy self-sufficiency in the future.

The Sasbach site joins ABB’s growing global network of Mission to Zero™ locations spanning Europe, the Americas and Asia. Mission to Zero™ began as a local initiative at ABB’s Lüdenscheid factory in Germany and has since scaled globally. Together, Mission to Zero™ sites are already reducing more than 60,000 tons of CO2e emissions from our operations per year, demonstrating how electrification, digitalization and energy efficiency can deliver measurable progress toward low-carbon manufacturing.

Through continued investment in renewable electricity, electrified processes, and smart energy management, ABB’s Sasbach site is becoming a future-ready manufacturing location that combines environmental responsibility with strong operational performance, supporting a more resilient and efficient industrial base for the region.

Empowering smarter home electrification.

Enables homeowners to add high-demand appliances without costly service upgrades.

The launch of ReliaHome™ Flex, a new modular energy management system which empowers homeowners and builders to add electric appliances without costly service upgrades has been announced by ABB. Designed to work with any brand of load center, ReliaHome Flex installs in minutes and scales easily for retrofits or new construction. Managed through the intuitive ReliaHome app, it delivers real-time insights and customizable automations, giving homeowners confidence and control over their energy use.

With electricity accounting for 44 percent of U.S. residential energy use – and set to rise by up to 22 percent by 20502 – demand for flexible energy management solutions is growing. For many households, adding even a single high-demand appliance can require a service upgrade costing anywhere from $3,000–$5,000 for a panel upgrade, to $5,000–$8,000 or more if the utility must upgrade transformers or trench service lines. ReliaHome Flex addresses this need by allowing homeowners the ability to add EV chargers, water heaters, HVAC systems, or induction cooktops without costly service upgrades.

ReliaHome Flex is built around two core components: the Hub and the Controller. The Hub acts as the central intelligence of the system, connecting to the home’s router via Ethernet for simple commissioning and managing wireless communication with all Controllers and the ReliaHome app. Each Controller manages single-pole or dual-pole loads up to 60 A, using information from the Hub to intelligently balance demand and prevent overloads.

The Hub and Controllers communicate through a built-in secure mesh network, ensuring reliable, seamless coordination between modules – fully independent of the home’s WiFi. This means the system continues functioning even if the WiFi signal is weak or the home temporarily loses internet connectivity.

Controllers can be installed in as little as 10 minutes and can be placed anywhere along the branch circuit without accessing the main panel, allowing for greater flexibility when managing loads that are not colocated or near the main panel. Stable data centre power supporting Ai.

Enhancing grid stability and data centre power supply in the US to support Ai growth.

As the adoption of generative Ai continues to drive demand for electricity to power data centres across the United States, ABB has been awarded three orders with VoltaGrid – an advanced microgrid power generation company based in Texas (USA) – to deliver critical grid stabilisation technology. The project will support reliable and stable electricity for multiple facilities VoltaGrid has under construction in the US for Ai infrastructure projects. The orders were booked in the first three quarters of 2025. Financial details were not disclosed.

ABB are to supply a package of 27 synchronous condensers with flywheel and prefabricated eHouse units with power control including automation and excitation systems integrated into the synchronous condenser control panels. These units provide high and instantaneous inertia, support short-circuit faults and maintain network voltage by supplying or absorbing reactive power – making them a leading industry solution for enhancing grid stability.

VoltaGrid will supply its proprietary natural gas-fueled power solution, which is designed for rapid deployment and able to meet the specific power demands of hyperscale data centres. The VoltaGrid offering can serve as both a short-term and long-term behind the meter energy solution, supporting data centre growth and reliability. Project delivery is scheduled to start in December 2025, with the first units expected to be operational by April 2026.

“ABB’s synchronous condensers are vital for meeting the energy demands of next-generation technologies like Ai data centres, thanks to their proven ability to ensure grid stability and enhance the overall resilience of power systems,” said Nathan Ough, CEO of VoltaGrid. “Partnering with ABB allows us to accelerate project execution and meet the growing performance demands of Ai operations, delivering more value to our customers.”

Data centres accounted for approximately 1.5 percent of the world’s electricity consumption in 2024, with the US responsible for the largest share of this at 45 percent. US data centre power consumption is expected to account for almost half of the growth in electricity demand between now and 2030 – with the US economy predicted to consume more electricity in 2030 for processing data than for manufacturing all energy-intensive goods combined, including aluminium, steel, cement and chemicals.

With the need for more power, alongside challenges such as grid stability and resilience, ABB supports data centres worldwide with electrification, automation and digitalisation products and systems to ensure secure and reliable power, supporting their operational reliability, energy efficiency and cost optimisation needs.

“ABB is proud to partner with VoltaGrid and support the evolving energy ecosystem in the US. Across the world, data centres are increasingly critical infrastructure and so maintaining grid stability has shifted from being optional to strategic,” said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB’s Energy Industries division. “Delivering stable, reliable and efficient power generation is vital to enable data centre growth. Our integrated automation, electrification and digitalisation solutions play an important role to meet growing demand while maintaining energy security.”

“Synchronous condensers may resemble large motors or generators in design, but their real strength lies in grid support,” said Kristina Carlquist, Head of Synchronous Condenser Product Line at ABB’s Motion High Power division. “As data centres expand, these machines are seeing renewed importance for their ability to provide inertia and short-circuit strength. For VoltaGrid, they will help ensure reliable, resilient microgrid performance.”
