As part of the contract – awarded by TJN, an engineering, procurement and construction joint venture involving Technip Energies, JGC Corporation and NMDC Group – ABB will supply its ECM system to provide real-time visibility and control of all electrical assets, enabling rapid fault detection, load optimization and power management to be achieved safely and reliably, while reducing downtime.

By using electric motors for its two liquefaction trains, the Ruwais LNG project can support emissions reduction efforts. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electrification of existing LNG terminals, and the use of low-emissions electricity to power these, could significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with production, by around 60 Mt CO2e a year.

Global LNG supply has grown faster than overall natural gas demand in recent years, with this trend set to continue with the delivery of nearly 300 billion cubic meters of new annual LNG supply capacity between 2025 and 2030.

“Electrification unlocks the full potential of LNG as a transition fuel to support decarbonization efforts and meet growing energy demands by providing reliable, abundant and affordable natural gas around the world,” said Bjarte Pedersen, Senior Vice President IMEA at ABB’s Energy Industries division. “By improving operational efficiency, preventing fault downtime and optimizing distribution, ABB’s ECM system safeguards production and extends asset life and we are pleased to support ADNOC’s Ruwais LNG facility with our integrated solutions.”

As the region’s first all-electric LNG plant, the Ruwais LNG facility stands at the forefront of ADNOC’s digital transformation journey. By integrating ABB’s advanced Electrical Control and Monitoring system with ADNOC’s AI-driven analytics, the facility will benefit from real-time insights, rapid fault detection, and predictive maintenance, maximizing operational efficiency and safety.

Ruwais LNG will have a total export capacity of 9.6mmtpa and will more than double ADNOC Gas’ LNG production output, helping to meet global energy demand increases and support energy security. ADNOC says over a 12-month period, the facility will be able to produce enough LNG to power every home in a city the size of London for more than two years.

Optimised usage & safety with full Containment Storage Tanks for LNG.

Roll-over prediction added to Rosemount™ TankMaster inventory management software, increasing ease-of-use for operators

Emerson has enhanced its Rosemount™ TankMaster inventory management software package to help optimise tank usage and increase safety in full containment storage tanks for LNG and other liquefied gases. These tanks are large, complex structures with a typical capacity of up to 200,000 cubic metres, which places specific demands on tank gauging systems. By providing both inventory management and roll-over prediction in a single software solution, TankMaster reduces costs, increases ease-of-use and reduces the risk of a potential accident.

“Many industrial accidents are traceable to human factors, so vendors are increasingly required to provide software and instrumentation that reduce the risk of human error by being easier to use,” said AnnCharlott Enberg, global functional safety manager at Emerson’s Automation Solutions business. “The fact that Rosemount TankMaster now provides a single software for inventory management and roll-over prediction, for use on a single PC, not only increases ease-of-use, but also accelerates operator training and increases safety by reducing the potential for human error.”

Roll-overs are dangerous releases of boil-off vapour that can occur when LNG stratification is left unchecked. The consequences can be severe – including extensive tank damage and the release of large quantities of LNG into the atmosphere. Organisations are therefore required to implement roll-over prediction measures. Emerson’s Rosemount TankMaster software uses data from level, temperature and density measurement devices incorporated into the Rosemount Tank Gauging System, to detect layering and calculate when a roll-over might occur, enabling operators to take preventative action.

Traditionally, organisations have kept their roll-over prediction and inventory management software installed separately on different PCs. Rosemount TankMaster offers both functions in a single solution, as well as stratification monitoring and alarms, cool-down and leak detection, temperature measurement overview and remote proof-testing support. This innovation creates various benefits for end users, including lower costs, improved ease-of-use and minimal training needs, which help reduce the risk of an accident due to human error.

• Rosemount TankMaster is a powerful and easy-to-use Windows-based software package that collects real-time data from the level, temperature, density and pressure measurement technology that forms a key part of the Rosemount Tank Gauging System. It gives organisations a complete overview of their full containment storage tanks, leading to increased operational efficiency and safety. Further supporting ease-of-use, TankMaster provides simple, step-by-step configuration and set-up guidance for all measurement devices incorporated in the tank gauging system.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Emerson Process Management has provided automation and engineering services for a Qatargas project that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1.6 million tonnes annually.

Now fully operational, the Jetty Boil-Off Gas (JBOG) Recovery facility is the biggest of its kind and one of the largest environmental investments in the world. It is expected to recover more than 600,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year – equivalent to the energy supply for more than 300,000 homes.

The facility is designed to recover the gas flared during LNG loading at the six LNG berths in Ras Laffan Port. The gas is compressed and sent to the Qatargas and RasGas LNG production facilities for use as fuel or as LNG.

Emerson won this multi-million dollar contract based on its leadership in oil and gas automation technologies, services, and expertise. Emerson specialists managed key elements of the project including automation engineering, configuration, startup, training, commissioning support and other services.

“Without Emerson’s highly skilled team, completing the project would have been vastly harder,” said Michael Koo, Qatargas’ Project Manager.

Emerson’s automation solution for the project included the DeltaV™ distributed control system to control and monitor operations, as well as the company’s Fisher® control valves and Rosemount® measurement instruments.

“The Emerson team welcomed this opportunity to help Qatargas execute the project safely, reliably and efficiently,” said Alvinne Rex Abaricia, Emerson’s senior programme manager for Qatargas. “We were able to apply flexible approaches to increase efficiency, such as testing hardware and software in parallel, and brought in dozens of experts from our own organisation as well as other suppliers to manage interfaces between existing and new systems.”

The $1 billion JBOG project is a landmark for the State of Qatar, demonstrating its commitment to balance industrial expansion with care for the environment.

SIL2-certified wireless gas detection system for LNG facility!

Yokogawa and GasSecure AS, a Dräger owned company, announce the delivery of the world’s first SIL2-certified wireless gas detection system for use at an LNG facility in Northern Europe. On this date, the two companies will begin promoting the unique capabilities of this system solution to companies that have a strong interest in maintaining safe and secure operations.
Background
Yokogawa has been developing a wide variety of ISA100 Wireless technologies and field wireless devices such as adapters that enable conventional wired devices to access wireless networks, and provides them to plants and other facilities primarily in the upstream oil and gas sector. GasSecure has developed ISA100 wireless gas detectors that can detect leaks of explosive hydrocarbon gases and are certified for compliance with the ATEX directive and the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme, and installs them on offshore oil and gas drilling platforms and at tank farms, industrial plants, and the like. GasSecure has already supplied a number of these products to leading oil and gas companies around the world.

In 2014, GasSecure and Yokogawa concluded an agreement under which the two companies jointly developed a wireless gas detection system that would meet their customers’ requirements.

Overview of the system
This system uses GasSecure’s GS01 wireless gas detectors to measure hydrocarbon gas concentrations. Using the ISA100 Wireless communications protocol, the GS01 establishes a link with a Yokogawa YFGW510 access point and sends data to a host system via a Yokogawa YFGW410 field wireless management station. Although the GS01 uses a low-power infrared sensor and is very energy efficient, it has a very fast response time. This capability of the GS01 and the utilisation of dual redundant communications by Yokogawa’s field wireless products make them essential components for the construction of a fast and highly reliable monitoring solution.

To meet its customers’ safety requirements, GasSecure has made enhancements to the GS01 to obtain SIL2 certification for this device. For its part, Yokogawa has modified the YFGW410 so that it now supports the PROFIsafe safety communication standard, and has verified that both companies’ products perform and operate as specified.

Future direction
In the oil & gas, chemical, and other industries, safety is a paramount concern at production, storage, and processing sites. Field wireless systems can be installed in difficult-to-wire locations and have lower cabling costs than wired systems. For these reasons, field wireless solutions are ideal for systems that collect production information such as flow rate, pressure, and temperature. And unlike other wireless technology platforms, they can be used to construct systems that perform gas detection and other safety functions, and are well suited to this purpose. With the release of SIL2-certified wireless gas detection systems, Yokogawa will actively promote its field wireless equipment and systems, and will expand this business.

LNG carrier control system order for Ichthys LNG Project!

Yokogawa has received an order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. to supply the control system for an LNG carrier that is being built for the Ichthys LNG project in Australia. This project is being carried out by a joint venture between INPEX (operator), Total, and several other companies.

Gas from the Ichthys field, which is located offshore of northwestern Australia, will undergo preliminary processing at sea to remove water and impurities, and extract condensate. The gas will then be transported by undersea pipeline to onshore processing facilities in Darwin. The project is expected to produce 8.4 million tons of LNG and 1.6 million tons of LPG per year, along with approximately 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

The ship will be the world’s largest Moss-type LNG carrier and will be used for transporting LNG from an onshore LNG processing plant that is being constructed as part of the Ichthys LNG project. The ship is scheduled to enter service by the end of 2016, in time for the completion of the plant. The ship is also the first Moss-type LNG carrier equipped with a dual fuel diesel engine (DFDE), which burns both fuel oil and gas.

Yokogawa will deliver the CENTUM® VP integrated production control system for monitoring and controlling the LNG carrier’s LNG tanks and loading/unloading facilities as well as the supply of gas to the DFDE and the supply of power to other driving units. Yokogawa will also be responsible for the engineering and commissioning of the control system.

Yokogawa believes that the following factors were key considerations in the decision to give it this order:

  1. The company has already delivered control systems for other DFDE ships.
  2. The company has a global service network, ensuring that vessels can undergo maintenance at any LNG port.

They won the control systems order for other Ichthys LNG project facilities in 2012. These include the onshore LNG processing plant, offshore production/process facilities, and the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. With this contract, the CENTUM VP system will cover all project facilities, from production to LNG transport.

Globally, the construction of many LNG carriers is planned for the transport of LNG from North America, Russia, Africa, and other regions. Backed by this order, Yokogawa will expand its control business for marine resource development facilities, including LNG carriers, FPSO vessels, floating LNG (FLNG) vessels, and floating storage and re-gasification units (FSRU).

Automation in LNG facility

Emerson selected as main automation contractor for Shell floating LNG facility

Shell's floating LNG concept!

Emerson Process Management has been appointed by Technip Samsung Consortium to serve as Main Automation Contractor for the Shell “Prelude” project, which will potentially be the world’s first Floating LNG (liquefied natural gas) development. Emerson Process Management was selected by Technip Samsung Consortium due to its Global Framework Agreement with Shell, announced in February 2010. This is the first project award for Emerson Process Management resulting from this Agreement.

Supporting Technip Samsung Consortium, the project’s overall front end engineering and design contractor, Emerson will be responsible for providing the strategy, design, and engineering of the process control and monitoring technologies to support the production facility.

Floating LNG unlocks gas reserves that would otherwise be stranded as they might be too far offshore. It is the next step in LNG production, which eliminates the need for transportation pipelines of gas to shore and onshore processing. The new production facility will operate as an integrated extraction, gas processing, and liquefaction plant, all directly above the gas reserves.

With rich experience in offshore production and project execution, plus global leadership in LNG automation, Emerson is perfectly positioned to support Shell’s goals for the initial construction project and long-term operational success.

“We are thrilled to support Shell’s vision for Floating LNG production,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president, Emerson Process Management. “Emerson’s track record of successfully delivering innovative projects like this suits us well for the challenge.”

The Shell Floating LNG facility is expected to have dimensions of 480 metres in length by 75 metres in width, a production capacity of 3.5 million to 4 million tonnes of LNG per year, and the ability to also process and export liquefied petroleum gas and condensate depending on gas composition. When fully ballasted, the vessel will weigh an estimated 600,000 tonnes. It will also have the flexibility to relocate to another gas field once production at one gas field is complete.

The Floating LNG project is located in the remote Browse Basin off the coast of Western Australia. The project is currently in the engineering and design phase of development and subject to a final investment decision.
