Automating fraud detection.

Datalogic S.p.A. has announced the expansion of its long-standing partnership with Digimarc through the implementation of Digimarc’s new end-to-end digital security layer for gift card protection across the Datalogic retail scanner portfolio, beginning in early 2026. Together, Datalogic and Digimarc are supporting retailers’ efforts to improve the checkout experience while reducing gift card fraud and helping brands protect consumer trust at the point of sale. The partnership further reinforces Datalogic’s position as a leading provider of loss prevention solutions at checkout, helping retailers to combat gift card fraud and reduce shrink at the point of sale without disrupting existing workflows.

Industry data shows that retailers are projected to lose over $132 billion to shrink in 2025, up 18% compared to 2022, while shoplifting has increased by 50% following the adoption of self-checkout terminals*. In parallel, gift card fraud continues to erode consumer confidence, with 23% of consumers in the U.S. reporting having given or received gift cards with no funds available*, underscoring the scale of gift card-related fraud and its impact on consumer trust.

Unlike traditional, cumbersome gift card security layers focused on packaging, Digimarc’s innovative technology embeds covert, tamper-evident digital watermarks directly into gift card designs, enabling automated, secure, and reliable detection of compromised cards during scanning at checkout. Authentic cards scan and activate normally at the point of sale, while tampered cards fail activation, stopping fraud before it impacts customers or brand trust. This approach allows gift cards to be authenticated at the point of sale with no disruption to existing checkout processes.

“We’re leveraging nearly 30 years of experience helping the world’s central banks protect global currencies to help today’s retailers and brands secure their gift cards,” explained Ken Sickles, Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer at Digimarc. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with Datalogic to enable their scanners to instantly detect tampered cards as part of Digimarc’s end-to-end digital security solution. Together, we’re driving greater automation in tamper detection, which prevents the sale of fraudulent gift cards to consumers—all while accelerating scanning speeds for faster checkouts and better customer experiences. This is a win-win for consumers, retailers, and brands.”

Datalogic plans to configure its retail scanners to work with Digimarc’s end-to-end digital security layer for gift cards, ensuring tampered cards won’t activate for retailers at the point of sale. Digimarc’s solution is over three times more secure than “card-only” security features and removes the need for cashiers to manually inspect or otherwise prepare cards prior to scanning.

“At Datalogic, our commitment is to provide best-in-class solutions that help retailers address one of their most pressing challenges: loss prevention at checkout,” said Rosario Casillo, Executive Vice President Product and Solutions at Datalogic. “By integrating Digimarc’s newest software across our retail scanners in early 2026, we are delivering an additional layer of security without compromising speed or customer experience. I am pleased that our renewed partnership with Digimarc unites us in the mission to protect retailers and customers against fraud.”

Reliable and accurate flammable gas detection.

The high-performance OLCT 100-XP-MS range of flammable gas detectors from Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection now incorporates cutting-edge MEMS (Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems) sensor technology. Delivering the market’s most accurate readings for over 14 of the most common combustible gases and gas mixes — including hydrogen, methane, propane and butane — MEMS technology adds to the capabilities provided by conventional sensors. Users also enjoy notable advantages regarding ‘poison’ immunity and operating life, particularly in environments that sometimes prove challenging for catalytic sensors.

“Our flammable gas detector with thermal conductivity technology supported by MEMS sensor provides accurate, automatic readings without correction factors, along with automatic gas classification,” says Régis Prévost, Product Line Manager, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection. “Delivering unprecedented reliability and accuracy, the device reduces false alarms thanks to integral compensation for environmental parameters that include temperature, pressure and humidity.”

Traditionally, industry professionals select a flammable gas detector housing a catalytic sensor calibrated for a specific gas, or an infrared (IR) sensor. Although these conventional solutions are still highly beneficial, they are not always optimal. Catalytic sensors require bump testing, for example, to check they remain free from sensor poisoning, while IR technology is unable to detect hydrogen. The use of Hydrogen is rising as the focus to find a cleaner alternative to natural gas continues across the industry, in turn driving the need for high-capability hydrogen detection solutions.

MEMS technology take gas detection to an even higher level of capability, providing precise readings in % LEL correlated with the specific gas or blended gas/vapour clouds present in the environment. By offering catalytic oxidation, IR and MEMS sensor technologies in a single device, the OLCT100-XP-MS represents a holistic solution that provides a revolution in flammable gas detection, regardless of environmental or operational constraints.

Ideal for use in energy sectors, including petrochemical and oil and gas, the new OLCT100-XP-MS also offers multi-gas protection in applications that include lithium-ion BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems), industrial manufacturing, wastewater treatment and fire response.

In some environments, extreme pressure, temperature and humidity can damage or even poison other sensor types, compromising performance and incurring unwanted cost. In contrast, MEMS sensor technology is poison-immune, operating reliably with an integral self-test for failsafe operations and complete peace-of-mind.

“With its robust design and highly engineered construction, our low-maintenance OLCT100-XP-MS comes with a two-year warranty,” says Régis Prévost. “Indeed, such is our confidence in this innovative flammable gas detector that users can expect many years of reliable and accurate operation in the most demanding industry applications.”

Safer hydrogen projects.

Hydrogen will be at the heart of the world’s energy transition away from natural gas. However, while there are many ways to produce and use hydrogen, there is a common denominator: all require monitoring for safety. Today, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection has a complete product offer for hydrogen that not only encompasses end-to-end gas, flame and fire detectors, but also a complementary range of leading-edge controllers, services and cloud data management options. As a result, more and more companies engaged in hydrogen transitioning projects are placing their trust in Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection as a one-stop-shop for all their safety needs.

Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection’s innovative fixed and portable systems have been ensuring the safe use of hydrogen for decades, with the company today providing a critical contribution to a safe and efficient energy transition. Products, systems and services are available to support the full hydrogen spectrum – production, distribution and storage – across a host of established and new applications. In addition, a wide range of sensors is available for the main gases in the hydrogen value chain, including methane, ammonia, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Many are suitable for integration into SIL2 or SIL3 systems.

Fixed gas detectors.
A case in point is the highly successful DG7-SIL2 intelligent fixed gas detector with integral display, which is ideal for detecting hydrogen and other gases related to hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives. This microprocessor-driven instrument is fully configurable using a wireless hand-held terminal or a hard-wired HART option, providing true flexibility to the installer and reduced service costs. The unit can interface directly with a wide range of panels, controllers and PLCs.

Another attractive option in fixed gas detectors is the OLCT 100-SIL2, which offers a range of housings and sensors for the full hydrogen value chain. It comes with a 4-20mA output and carries SIL certification in accordance with EN 50402.

Part of the same product family, the compact OLCT 20 fixed gas detector is ideal for installation in shelters or on skids, where there is a need for monitoring in very small spaces or for on-board applications. These transmitters again provide a 4-20mA output with the potential for direct connection to PLCs.

Flame detectors.
Many customers ask if they can use their existing natural gas flame detector with hydrogen. However, many flame detection systems for use in hydrocarbon processing just ‘see’ combustion products such as water, soot or carbon dioxide. When pure hydrogen burns it forms only water, making it necessary to use special flame detection equipment.

Teledyne GFD has an exciting new offer in this area: the Spyglass IR3-H2-V flame detector quickly detects hydrogen and other ‘energy transition’ fires in support of rapid response efforts. A near-infrared camera provides personnel with the ability to see invisible hydrogen flames in all weather and light conditions. Notably, the detector automatically records video, providing additional means to study the cause and development of fires.

For building networks of wired or wireless gas and flame detection equipment to enable integrated site safety strategies, it will be necessary to employ a controller. Here, the Teledyne GFD modular and flexible MX62-SIL2 features a large, fully interactive 10" (up to 15") high-definition colour touchscreen, 64 secure channels and a back-up processor to ensure continual measurement.

Portable gas leak detectors.
Portable gas detection equipment is perfect for use by personnel working in locations where compressed hydrogen is present and may potentially leak. Hydrogen has a wide flammability range in air: from 4% to 74% at atmospheric pressure. To ensure safety at all times, Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection portable gas detection systems have an alarm at 50% of the LEL, or 2% hydrogen.

Among the latest developments is the versatile GS700-Hydrogen, an upgraded version of the company’s popular and successful Gasurveyor 700 (GS700) that adds the ability to detect hydrogen. The new ATEX-certified GS700-Hydrogen therefore offers both natural gas and hydrogen detection in a single instrument. Ideal for leak detection around major equipment, large sites, and pipeline installation and maintenance, the GS700 has an optional GPS mapping system. It is possible to store and process data from the field in Teledyne GDCloud software to map the location of measured data and pinpoint the geo-location of any leaks. The device, which offers exceptional flexibility and performance in all gas utility applications, has already seen adoption at several hydrogen network test sites.

Personal safety gas monitors.
Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection can offer a comprehensive range of wearable devices for monitoring hydrogen, ammonia and all major gases relating to the hydrogen value chain. For example, the PS200 four-gas compliance monitor is compact, lightweight, water resistant and extremely robust, while the larger PS500 model provides the potential to detect up to five gases.

Ultimately there will be many roads to the hydrogen economy based on decarbonisation and new applications. And while some harbour concerns about hydrogen’s tiny molecules that can leak through the smallest of cracks, Teledyne GFD has the expertise and solutions to render hydrogen a very ordinary gas. The company has been working with customers for decades to ensure the safety of personnel and assets when handling hydrogen. Today, a complete portfolio of hydrogen gas and flame detection systems from Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection is ready to empower a safe and efficient transition to the hydrogen economy.

Detect without damage.

On-time and under-budget are two phrases which property developers know can never be taken for granted. Especially where renovations or restorations of older properties are concerned. Hidden structural issues, water damage, heat loss or ageing heating systems; they can all be significant (and expensive) problems which can set a build back by months.

The same goes for property surveys or insurance claims where potential property issues, if missed, can cause big problems later on.

Traditionally, detecting damage to properties has risked further disturbance of the fabric of the building with invasive tests conducted to assess the full extent of the issue. This can be costly, time-consuming and sometimes even makes existing problems worse.

magicplan

magicplan changes all of that. Designed for remodelling, restoration, inspection, and claims professionals, this application makes invasive manual property inspections a thing of the past. It’s been developed to make the job of creating floor plans easier, simplify reporting and generate cost estimates at the touch of a button.

And with recent updates adding further functionality, magicplan can now also show acute real-time energy loss and damage beneath the surface in real-time - revealing dangers that could otherwise be missed by visual inspection.

Bernd Wolfram
Bernd Wolfram, Head of Product & Marketing at magicplan, said: “FLIR stands out as a technology provider that makes it easy to integrate its hardware with third party software applications like magicplan. Integrated workflows are key to optimizing the daily workflows and productivity of field technicians!”

Mobile thermography for the discerning developer.
By integrating FLIR’s industry-leading thermography, magicplan now allows developers to integrate essential energy loss and damage information into their reporting and planning. From pinpointing inefficiencies in insulation through to identifying water damage, magicplan works with the FLIR ONE Edge Pro to detect everything from extreme heat to pervasive cold spots - all of which can signify problematic damage.

The uses for this are limited only by the scope of the project it is put to work on. By combining the app’s extensive library of developer-led features with the FLIR ONE Edge Pro, it equips users with a professional-grade thermal camera that can detect heat of up to 400°C (752°F) with thermal sensitivity of 70 mK.

Now, those examining sites can detect more than meets the eye and elevate inspection with must-have data to help focus their plan, timeframe and estimated cost.

Whether it’s inspecting mechanical systems, investigating water loss, or checking the output of an electrical panel, developers can deliver real-time insights without the need to bore, burrow or drill their way through physical obstacles.

Planning around problem areas.
Developers know that until a thorough inspection has been carried out, every build can be subject to any number of vexing variables. magicplan allows users to do more than just passively relay data - it contextualises it instantly and intuitively.

It allows users to create instant floor plans, both manually or by performing a quick scan of the room using their smartphone camera, as well as being compatible with laser meters with bluetooth technology for 100% accurate measurements. Creating projects in 2D and 3D and providing developers with a quote on the spot to supply to prospective clients, this latest collaboration with Teledyne FLIR means that everything from the most minute measurements to the most pervasive ‘unseen’ problems is displayed clearly.

Pinpoint accuracy across every elevation.
Once a floorplan has been created using magicplan, users can choose to add their photos not just to an individual project, but can even decide its placement, classification and orientation.

Say, for example, a developer suspected a property suffering from water damage - whether through visual inspection or a room feeling colder than usual during a walkthrough. Using the FLIR ONE Edge Pro in conjunction with magicplan, they could easily perform a scan of the room and photograph areas that show anomalies - either on the surface or lurking beneath the surface.

Once detected, the concern can be added to a specific location on the floor plan so that anyone involved in the project can not only be aware of the issue, but also of its exact location and degree of severity.

Everything from a faulty thermostat impacting a heating system to invisible draughts from broken window seals through to rising damp and even the most minute fluctuations in insulation density, developers can now see beyond the visual spectrum and make real-time adjustments to their estimates with active thermography - all in the palm of their hands.

It’s ideally suited to every stage of development but is especially useful when it comes to inspection and claims prior to a buyer purchasing a property. With this potent combination of heat-sensitive hardware and insightful software, would-be purchasers could potentially save thousands by detecting unseen problems before they sign the dotted line.

Excellence in Automation Winner.

EnQuest UK has won the 2021 ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation award, joining a list of distinguished end users which include Fuji Oil Company, Ltd.; ILBOC; BAPCO; Alcoa; Phillips 66; PETRONAS; and Nippon Steele & Sumikin Engineering.

Each year, the ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) presents the ISA100 Wireless Excellence in Automation Award to a global end-user company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and innovation with ISA100 Wireless technology. This award was presented to EnQuest UK for leadership and creativity in the design and implementation of ISA100 Wireless Applications for Safe Gas Detection.

Join ISA on August 17th, 2022, at 11 AM ET for a live webinar where we will be presenting this exciting case study, “A new approach to gas detection - Achieving a safe and secure system upgrade on a vast scale.” Register here.

Draeger have designed and implemented, in collaboration with EnQuest UK, the largest ISA100 Wireless gas detection system in Britain, one of the largest in the world, at the EnQuest UK-operated Sullom Voe (Shetland Islands, Scotland) Terminal. The system includes 122 Wireless gas detectors and employs dual redundancy, retaining complete safe gas detection coverage following any component failure.

The ISA100 Wireless system represents an estimated 70-80% cost saving, confirmed by the customer, compared with a hard-wired gas detection system due to removal of the cost of extensive civil ground works and above ground cable containment at a site covering 640 acres/2.6sq/kms. This is the first British site where Wireless gas detection is the dominant technology, present on an original late 1970’s processing plant, covering a large geographical area with limited field cabling availability. It represents a huge leap forward in terms of maintaining high safety standards with reduced costs. Wireless gas detection solves a problem SVT had been wrestling with, justifying a large capex spend project on an ageing limited life asset. The system was interfaced direct to the site’s distributed control system (DCS) for operator and emergency response alarm interface.

Systems for long-range methane detection system.

System yields faster analysis and repair of oil and gas operations to reduce the accidental leakage of methane.

FPGA cards are to be supplied into a basin-wide methane scanning and monitoring system by Abaco Systems. The system yields faster analysis and repair of oil and gas operations to reduce the accidental leakage of methane, which accounts for about 10% of US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The initial win of $350K has a large prospective upside through ongoing development.

Pete Thompson, vice president of product management for Abaco Systems, said, “Abaco’s commitment to innovation is clearly evidenced in the design and ongoing use of our FMC104 and FMC108 for research into eye-safe, long-path laser systems and now long-distance gas detection systems. We are thrilled to be a part of research paving the way with groundbreaking technologies that change the future of emissions mitigation efforts.”

The continuous monitoring system employs centralized eye-safe laser beams spanning regions measuring multiple square miles to quickly detect, locate, and size methane leaks in a dense infrastructure. What began in a university research lab later expanded into an ongoing commercial product that shifts the industry paradigm away from on-site time-intensive monitoring of oil wells and natural gas production facilities. Instead of waiting weeks for data to be received and interpreted, action can be taken much faster, reducing emissions, and lowering costs. Abaco’s expertise in RF and FPGA design, innovative space-saving heatsink design, and longstanding relationship with the academic institution led to selection of the company’s FMC104 and FMC108 FPGA mezzanine cards for this system.

Both the FMC104 four-channel FPGA mezzanine card and the FMC108 eight-channel FPGA mezzanine card are fully compliant with the VITA 57.1-2008 standard. These cards allow for flexible sampling frequency control, analog input gain, and offset correction through serial communication with a carrier card. Equipped with power supply and temperature monitoring, they offer several power-down modes to switch off unused functions. Used in this application as digitizers, these cards bring proven technologies capable of low-cost continuous monitoring for fast methane leak detection and repair. Their inventive heat dissipation design allowed for a less constrained environment and decreased overall costs by eliminating the need for additional heatsinks.

For measurements with an integrated tunable laser, all channels between C62 (1527.99 nm) and C12 (1567.95 nm) can be used in the C-band. Channel spacings of 50, 100, and 200 GHz can be achieved.

The integrated continuous wave light source ensures end-to-end continuity through all multiplexers. The operation of all other channels is not disturbed.

With a single measurement, the OTDR provides all the values needed to quickly troubleshoot an error. The results are also compared to all international standards; Thus, the operator can quickly see if all specifications are met using a pass / fail table. The testing equipment is available from Laser Components.

With optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), 18 (CWDM) to 96 (DWDM) channels can be transmitted via a single optical fiber. This allows transmission rates in the network to be increased considerably. For this reason, xWDM technologies are becoming increasingly popular in broadband service access networks.

Portable Gas Detectors and staff protection during COVID-19.

There are many ways that portable gas detectors for personal use can deliver individual protection for key staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kevin O´Donnell, EMEA Business Development Manager at Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection, uses his expertise to answer a number of pertinent questions.

Q. What are the links between COVID-19 and gas detection?
A. The packaging, transportation and storage of COVID-19 vaccines at low temperatures necessitates the use of dry ice, which is a form of carbon dioxide (CO2). If CO2 escapes in its gaseous form, there is a danger to factory, logistics and healthcare workers, most of whom will be unfamiliar with dry ice and its potentially harmful effects. Although there is a clear global need for vaccine urgency, employers also have a responsibility to avoid compromising worker health and safety.

Another application concerns the storage and use of oxygen at temporary hospitals, a number of which are now in operation across Europe to provide COVID-19 patients with emergency ventilation. These facilities do not have permanently engineered solutions to monitor for oxygen leaks, which presents the need for additional safety precautions.
In both applications, portable gas detectors worn by personnel can monitor for gas leaks and alarm against dangerous exposure.

Q. What are risks of exposure to excessive levels of CO2 and oxygen?
A. Dry ice is solid-state CO2. However, sublimation of CO2 occurs at temperatures above -78°C, when it becomes gaseous. CO2 in this form is heavier than air and tends to take the place of oxygen, presenting a risk of anoxia. As little as 3% CO2 by volume can lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, while 5% will likely prompt dizziness, confusion, headaches and shortness of breath. All of these conditions can prove dangerous in a workplace situation. Moreover, staff absenteeism due to feeling poorly is a major risk to the effectiveness of vaccine supply chains.

As for oxygen, excessive amounts of this gas in the atmosphere due to leakage from tanks or equipment presents a higher flammability risk.

Q. What are the exposure level guidelines for workplaces?
A.
Alarm levels for CO2 in the PS500 personal gas monitor from Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection, for example, are set well below 3-5%. In fact, 0.5% CO2 by volume is the EH40 prescribed time-weighted average safe exposure limit for workplaces across an 8-hour working day. There is also a guideline for STEL (short-term exposure limit), which is 1.5% CO2 by volume over a 15-minute period.

With oxygen, leaks into the workplace atmosphere above 25% by volume, change the flammability of the environment. Again, a personal gas monitor, in this case the high-performance yet cost-effective Protégé ZM features appropriately set levels of 23% Vol to warn against any impending danger.

Q. How are personal gas monitors used?
A. The device simply clips to a lapel or belt loop, for example, from where it can sense danger from every direction and make that vital connection between excessive gas exposure and personal safety. A detector such as the Protégé ZM measures just 94 x 56mm and weighs only 76g.

Personal gas monitors are extremely easy to use and typically feature a single button switch-on. If an alarm triggers, the monitor will beep, shake and flash [audible, tactile and visual] to ensure the user acknowledges the warning in all kinds of environments, including noisy ones.

Q. Is there access to recorded data?
A. Data-logging capability sees a memory store taken every minute. Users can upload the data to a PC, where they will see a time and date stamp against exposure events. This evidence is useful if there is a requirement for an investigation or report.

Q. What is the best way to clean/sanitise gas detectors during COVID-19?
A. With frequent shift changes at factories, logistics hubs, vaccination centres and temporary hospitals, there is a likelihood that staff will share personal gas detectors. To avoid any potential for virus transmission, it is good practice to clean the monitors between shifts. The best way to ensure surface cleanliness is to use mild soap and water applied to a damp cloth.
Do not use alcohol wipes or other alcohol-based cleaning products, as the sensor will detect the alcohol and provide a false reading. Users should also avoid silicone, chlorine or bleach-based cleaning products.

Q. What about service and calibration?
A. It is highly advisable that users follow service and calibration guidance for their monitors to ensure quality and reliability. Working with a gas detector that is out of calibration or needs a sensor replacement, for example, defeats the objective and places staff at risk. Optimum intervals are dependent upon the working environment, but annual service and calibration is typical. A two-year warranty is applicable assuming adherence to the service schedule.

Q. Why is Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection qualified to help in the COVID-19 emergency?
A. Due to the knowledge, expertise and experience of Teledyne Gas and Flame Detection across many sectors that deal with potentially dangerous gases in confined spaces, the company has proven, high-integrity solutions that can help keep workers safe during the pandemic. Safety is at the heart of all Teledyne gas monitoring and detection solutions.

Portable gas detectors upgrade.

Crowcon Detection Instruments has launched new functionalities for its Gas-Pro portable detectors.

A new gas sensor for hydrogen cyanide (HCN) (0–30 ppm with resolution of 0.1 ppm) has been launched by Crowcon. This will be particularly useful for those working with electroplating, nitrile production and ship fumigation and in chemical plants and gold mining.

The addition of their TWA Resume function, which retains TWA logs even when the device is switched off (e.g. during breaks or meals) and thus ensures workers are never over-exposed to harmful gas.

In-field pellistor changes for methane, hydrogen, propane, ethane, acetylene (0–100% LEL, with resolution of 1% LEL). By allowing in-field pellistor changes, Gas-Pro detectors give users the flexibility to conveniently test for a range of flammable gases, without needing multiple sensors or detectors. What is more, they can continue to calibrate using existing methane canisters, saving time and money.

Ed Clapham, Product Manager for Crowcon, is pleased with the new features and notes their value to end users. ‘We’ve always been proud of the Gas-Pro range because it offers a genuine one-stop solution for a wide range of oxygen, flammable and toxic gas hazards,’ he explains. ‘But the new features make it even better. The TWA Resume function, for example, which was originally only found in our T4 model, makes a great contribution to workplace safety that simply isn’t found in many other detectors. And while hydrogen cyanide is not a well-known gas, it is exceptionally toxic, so the new sensor will be vital in many settings.’
