Automising batch production.

Perfect Batch is an Ai-powered manufacturing analytics solution launched by TwinThread. It is designed to optimise batch production processes by empowering manufacturers to standardise and consistently replicate their best performing or “golden batches”.

Unlike legacy systems that rely on passive alerts and static manual settings, Perfect Batch applies industrial AI to dynamically identify ideal batch profiles from historical data and actively recommend actions for increasing efficiency. This enables organisations to rapidly shift from reactive firefighting to proactive optimisation in a matter of weeks – not months or years.

Perfect Batch At-a-Glance

  • Rapid Speed to Value: Perfect Batch connects to existing batch execution systems and automatically interrogates past data to build digital twins and apply models in hours.
  • Dynamic Perfect Profile Learning: Instead of setting limits manually, Perfect Batch dynamically learns ideal control limits and process centerlines, based on actual process capability and historical performance.
  • Unlocked Hidden Capacity: Granular cycle time analysis identifies bottlenecks and lost production time, facilitating capacity improvements from existing assets without new capital investment.
  • Optimisation by Exception: Automated alerting and issue diagnosis empowers operations teams to focus on solving problems, without getting bogged down with endless troubleshooting and investigations.
  • Optional Closed-Loop Action: Thread Builder, a real-time workflow engine that works with Perfect Batch, automates anomaly responses, performs automatic diagnoses, and can trigger specific corrective actions automatically.
  • Automated Compliance: Tailored for regulated industries, Perfect Batch provides automated material tracking, quality and yield conformance, and audit-ready histories.

Perfect Batch furthers TwinThread’s position as a complete industrial AI platform. By continuously monitoring and simultaneously optimising five key dimensions—utilisation, cycle time, quality, process control, and yield—operations teams gain actionable intelligence that helps them drastically reduce investigation times, minimise waste, and accelerate continuous improvement activities. Available in both Simple Batch and Complex Batch tiers, the solution scales easily to meet the needs of process manufacturers of all sizes.

“This solution’s core promise is to empower operations teams to deliver the ideal batch every time, regardless of recipe, shift, or variations in raw materials,” says Erik Udstuen, co-founder and CEO at TwinThread. “By completely automating the discovery of hidden capacity and enabling proactive optimisation, we are giving manufacturers the power to eliminate inconsistencies and maximise financial performance of their existing assets.”

Beyond the plant floor, Perfect Batch helps drive strategic and collaborative alignment across organisations’ entire manufacturing portfolios by providing a global view of asset utilisation and batch making performance. As a result, the platform serves as a single source of truth for cross-functional teams. This offers a common lens that operations teams, engineering teams, and supply chain leaders can all use to identify, prioritise, and proactively execute improvement initiatives that optimise the deployment of capital across the supply network.

Centenary in industrial automation marked.

Representatives of British manufacturing gathered in force in June marking the centenary of Festo. The event, held at Festo GB’s Innovation Centre in Northampton, was an ideal opportunity for industry organisations, customers, suppliers, and employees to discuss how automation will shape British manufacturing in the future.
Dr Sebastian Beck, Festo, John Pearce, Made in Britain, Ben Blackledge, CEO Worldskills UK and Professor Mike Wilson, MTC,

Guest speakers included John Pearce, CEO, Made in Britain, Ben Blackledge, CEO, Worldskills UK, Professor Mike Wilson, Chief Automation Officer, Manufacturing Technology Centre, and Dr Sebastian Beck, Festo Board Member for Finance and HR. Key themes included the importance of innovation and collaboration, attracting new talent and skills development, and investment in automation in the context of British manufacturing and the global economy.

Skills shortages and an aging workforce are challenges that automation can solve, according to Professor Mike Wilson, Chief Automation Officer, Manufacturing Technology Centre. He emphasised the transformative potential of automation as a means to revitalise productivity and stimulate growth, drive innovation and efficiency, and encourage a more dynamic and progressive approach to change. “We must invest in more automation if we want to retain our competitive edge,” he told the audience. “Britain is still the world’s 12th largest economy, but we only average 119 robots per 10,000 employees. We must treble this figure just to stand still, let alone catch up with countries like the U.S. and Denmark. If we matched the levels of automation that exist in our competing countries, we could increase UK productivity by 22 percent.”

Festo’s Dr Sebastian Beck then explained how the company’s original motto, “one mission, many hands”, had set the foundation for a business based on teamwork and collaboration. He traced Festo’s early interest in internationalisation and enthusiasm for technology that resulted in the development of many unique automation solutions, from a semi-automated cylinder-valve combination in 1955, through to modern valve terminals, electric automation and the adoption of piezo technology to improve energy efficiency.

He then announced that Festo is close to launching its next innovation, an open architecture automation platform.

Clampin screw with power amplifier.

New investments should be "worth it" in the long term - be it through easier and faster handling during setup, through the reduction of potential hazards or more ergonomic workplace designs. Longer tool service life or improved product quality are also among the desired advantages. Solutions that combine several of these aspects are particularly interesting. With JAKOB clamping elements, such a multiple effect is often found - thanks to their innovative and well-thought-out "inner workings".

The heart of the JAKOB SC power clamping screws is their unique inner workings: a specially developed wedge clamping system. This system serves as a powerful amplifier and enables extremely high clamping forces with low tightening torques. The simple, manual operation guarantees the highest operational reliability.

The SC series power clamping screws are suitable for a wide range of applications - including presses, punches, machine tools, fixture construction and equipment construction. Various sizes with graduated thread diameters and clamping forces are available.

Thanks to their special geometry, the SC clamping screws are self-locking in every clamping position and offer a clamping stroke of up to 3 mm. This means that clamping forces up to the nominal value can be reliably achieved regardless of the tightening torque.

In addition to the standard series with thread diameters of M36, M48, M64 and M80, JAKOB offers the special version SC 100. This impresses with a maximum clamping force of 250 kN with a thread of M100 x 6 - and that with a tightening torque of just 130 Nm. Operation is straightforward with a 14 mm Allen key. For precise, reproducible clamping force values, the use of a torque wrench is recommended.

Customer-specific special threads are possible at any time on request in order to offer tailor-made solutions for special requirements.

Object detection.

Optical sensors feature enhanced detection capabilities and faster commissioning.

The Power PinPoint LED from Leuze emits the maximum light power from a very small surface. The new light source technology can be used to finely position stacker cranes, among other things, using diffuse reflection sensors.

Aligning and commissioning sensors is often very time-consuming. The Power PinPoint LED from Leuze now makes this much quicker and easier. The sensors’ light-emitting diode emits its maximum light power from a very small surface. The Power PinPoint LED generates a light spot that maintains its size, shape and homogeneity over the sensor's entire working range enabling simple and fast commissioning. This technology also increases process reliability through precise detection. The innovative light source is available for the first time with Leuze’s new 33C and 35C sensor series as well as the 25C, 3C and 5B diffuse sensor series.

Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors achieve a higher function reserve with Power PinPoint LEDs, especially with small reflectors. Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs are ideal for object detection in harsh food industry environments.

Small, bright and precise.
Sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs generate a small, round light spot with sharply defined contours. This gives the sensors extremely reliable detection capabilities and enables precise start and end detection of an object with pinpoint response behaviour during object tracking. Even small objects are optimally detected by sensors with Power PinPoint LED thanks to their precise detection capability. Another advantage is that Retro-reflective sensors with Power PinPoint LEDs have higher function reserves for applications with small reflectors or large distances. Also, several through-beam photoelectric sensors can be used in parallel with increased detection reliability as their compact light beam minimizes diffused light. The Power PinPoint LED also reduces the possibility of unwanted reflection to ensure highly reliable detection.

Throughbeam photoelectric sensors also demonstrate the innovative light source’s strengths. Sensors with the Power PinPoint LED provide extremely reliable detection even in confined spaces – for example battery cells in a filling station.

The Power PinPoint LED is already used in the 33C and 35C sensor series, amongst others. Both series’ ranges include diffuse sensors, retro-reflective sensors and through-beam photoelectric sensors in smooth stainless-steel housings. These are particularly suitable for hygiene-sensitive production and packaging processes. Therefore, they can be used for almost all applications in harsh, wet or hygiene-sensitive environments. The sensors can withstand high mechanical loads and intensive cleaning processes. The 33C and 35C series also include special solutions for packaging processes – including sensors for detection through film, clear glass or PET.

Used machinery and AI!

The future of the used machinery market lies in the combination of human expertise and the analytical precision of artificial intelligence.

How much is my used machine worth?
When is the perfect time to sell?
AI can help sellers with such questions.
Pic © Surplex.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in many industries. This advanced technology is not only valued for its ability to analyse complex data and make decisions - it also offers the potential to optimise processes and automate routine tasks. The used machinery trade in particular shows how AI opens up new opportunities and can revolutionise existing processes.

From an idea to a universal tool.
The origins of artificial intelligence date back to the 1950s, when scientists began to explore the idea of thinking and learning machines. Today, AI includes a wide range of advanced technologies such as machine learning, neural networks and autonomous systems that can make decisions on their own. These techniques have enabled the use of AI in a wide range of applications, from optimising complex production lines to improving customer interaction and supporting diagnosis in medicine. The advantage of AI systems lies in its ability to learn from large amounts of data and recognise patterns, making it an indispensable analysis and forecasting tool. In many industries, AI is therefore not only used to increase efficiency, but also to develop new business models and transform existing markets.

Five trends in the used machinery market.
The used machinery market is also beginning to recognise and use the benefits of artificial intelligence. The following five AI trends are emerging that could have a significant impact on the trade:

  1. Pricing and value assessment: AI models use extensive data analyses to determine the current market value of used machines and provide realistic price recommendations. For example, age, manufacturer, machine type and maintenance periods are compared.
  2. Maintenance prediction: By analysing operating data, AI systems can predict when maintenance work is required. This minimises downtime and maximises the service life of the machines.
  3. Demand forecasting: AI can analyse sales trends and past transaction data to predict future fluctuations in demand and determine the optimal time to sell.
  4. Supply chain optimisation: AI can anticipate supply chain disruptions and plan more efficient transport routes, resulting in faster delivery times.
  5. Adaptation and retooling through AI: AI can analyse existing production processes and show where used machines can be used effectively to modernise, expand areas of application or increase efficiency. By analysing an AI, possibilities for modernising and adapting used machines can be identified in order to expand their areas of application and increase efficiency.
AI not the complete answer.
Although AI offers support in many areas and enables significant efficiency gains, it cannot replace the personal and expert service of specialised used machinery dealers like Surplex. Amidst the rapidly evolving landscape of the box forming machinery sector, the demand for more efficient, sustainable, and robust machinery is escalating. Delta's innovative automation solutions have played a pivotal role in enhancing the production capabilities of Tecnobox, a box forming machinery company in Spain. This transformation has not only fortified Tecnobox's position in a competitive market, but it has also set new standards in the industry for technological advancement and environmental responsibility.

Nestled in Levante, a bountiful food-producing region, Tecnobox is renowned for its dedication to quality, innovation, and sustainability. With around 40 employees, this medium-sized company has carved a niche in manufacturing robust, low-maintenance cardboard box assembly machinery.

Its products are distinguished by the use of standard components to speed up production and a commitment to replacing metal and plastic containers with biodegradable alternatives.

However, the post-pandemic landscape posed unprecedented challenges for the company. A critical component crisis threatened the continuity of Tecnobox's production, putting its market leadership at risk. This crisis coincided with a period when Delta was seeking to establish a stronger presence in the market.

Tecnobox's need was clear. It required a system that mirrored its current architecture's reliability, while offering enhanced efficiency. The solution had to be complete and incorporate EtherCAT communication while aligning with its ethos of innovation and sustainability. With its AX3 PLC, MS300, ASDA-B3, DOP100, and LITE Power Supply. Delta emerged as the candidate most suited to meeting Tecnobox’s requirements, not just for the completeness of its offering, but also its ability to deliver it promptly.

Operating two distinct machines within the system, Tecnobox required specialized control architectures tailored to each machine's unique tasks and performance metrics. The first machine, TB-Pack, utilizes a servo system with the MS300 drive, achieving a production speed of 3000 pieces per hour. Along with the servo system and MS300 drive, it is also equipped with an HMI, PLC, and I/O, making this machine optimally forms boxes of specific types.

The second machine, TBQ-Pack, shares a similar configuration with TB-Pack but substitutes the MS300 with another servo system, allowing it to operate at a faster pace of up to 10000 pieces per hour. These variations in control architecture stem from the distinct production requirements and speed capabilities of each machine.

A synergy of expertise and innovation.
The journey began with Delta's proactive approach. Collaborating closely with its regional partner, INDA LEVANTE, Delta offered its comprehensive automation solutions to Tecnobox. This collaboration was not just about providing hardware; it involved an intricate process of understanding Tecnobox's needs and tailoring its hardware and software solutions according to Tecnobox’s unique requirements.

Delta’s Project Managers and Field Application Engineers spearheaded the initiative, conducting extensive technical training sessions for Tecnobox and INDA LEVANTE. Within five months, a prototype machine was manufactured which integrated Delta's advanced automation systems. As with all implementations, in the early stages there were challenges to overcome, but they served to prove Delta’s confidence in problem-solving and commitment to complete customer satisfaction.

Enhanced performance and cost-efficiency.
Following the implementation, the results were remarkable. Tecnobox not only overcame the production hurdles, but it did so with a solution that saved approximately 25% in electronic materials costs. Furthermore, the stability and efficiency of Delta’s solutions were not just in line with Tecnobox’s expectations, but also reinforced its market position during a critical period.

This collaboration between Delta, Tecnobox, and INDA LEVANTE transcends a mere business transaction; it exemplifies a synergy where challenges are converted into opportunities. Digitalised production simulated.

Digitalised production processes can be simulated in detail on a small scale with fischertechnik’s revolutionary Agile Production Simulation, for instance with a driverless transport system and quality control using artificial intelligence (AI). The compact simulation model provides a unique opportunity to learn about and simulate future technologies using a hands-on approach.

The factory of the future has been the subject of many research projects in science and the industry. Future-oriented companies are relying on automation, modularity, artificial intelligence and agility to remain competitive. In order to advance these topics in the industry and research, students, apprentices and members of staff require the corresponding skills and awareness to handle complex issues. This is where the Agile Production Simulation learning concept comes in. It simulates processes such as quality control using artificial intelligence or driverless transport systems on a small scale, recreating automated processes from incoming goods to modular production and quality control. The accompanying educational material translates the hands-on simulated processes into future skills for learners. The model’s digital twin significantly enhances the learning experience.

The Quality Control with AI module from fischertechnik’s Agile Production Simulation facility makes the complex topic of machine learning tangible while demonstrating its uses in a production environment. The model will soon be available for anyone who wants to get to grips with the factory of the future.

Agile Production Simulation is a factory consisting of flexible and combinable modules. Starting at the incoming raw goods, the material flow passes through an automated high-bay warehouse, various production stations such as a milling or drilling station and AI quality control to the outgoing goods. A driverless transport system (DTS) with omniwheels transports workpieces between the individual stations, ensuring an agile production process tailored to customer needs. The DTS can be charged at a charging point without changing batteries, if required.

Each workpiece contains an NFC tag where the production data is recorded for digital traceability. The factory produces workpieces in different colours with various processing features. Agile production enables product-specific manufacturing steps within a lean process without the need for set-up time.

Agile Production Simulation is controlled by a central control system (Raspberry Pi 4 Model B) connected to the controllers of the individual factory modules, SPS Siemens S7 1200. Various communication protocols, such as the MQTT protocol (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), allow the modules to connect and work together.

Cloud-based real-time monitoring provides dashboards to control processes and visualise the factory status. It can also determine KPIs such as cycle times and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). An online store simulates the customer’s workpiece order process. A moveable camera can be controlled via the dashboard to simulate the principle of remote maintenance.

The Quality Control with AI module makes the complex topic of machine learning tangible while demonstrating its uses in a production environment. Based on the concept of supervised learning, the machine learning modules are implemented with the AI tool Tensorflow.

Agile Production Simulation was developed in cooperation with experts from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the software company OMM Solutions GmbH and the University of Stuttgart. The model will soon be available for anyone who wants to get to grips with the factory of the future.

Humidity measurements in multi-component plastic moulding.

Injection moulding companies are utilising more accurate humidity sensors to meet customers’ increasing demands for greater precision, consistency and sustainability.

Camteam Oy, based in southwest Finland, designs and produces high quality plastic products and moulds, serving a range of industry and consumer needs around the globe. As one of the Nordic region’s leading multi-component plastic moulding companies, Camteam attributes much of its success to listening closely to customers. This allows the company to consistently meet evolving market requirements through precise selection of the right materials and processes.

As the pace of innovation in the plastic moulding sector continues to increase, Camteam knows that meeting their customers’ needs is more challenging than ever. For example, a growing number of polymer combinations are being developed in response to customer demands for greater precision, consistency and sustainability. This increasingly calls for multi-component injection moulding (combining different types of plastic in one part) with each production batch requiring the same high-quality standards, with minimal variation.

Camteam’s experts know from experience that to get this right requires continuous and highly accurate measurement data. Hygroscopic materials require the right moisture level from the start; some materials as low as under 0.02% RH, and seasonal changes in humidity cannot be allowed to influence the moisture level of the moulded material. For example, polyamides and polycarbonate filled with glass fibers absorb moisture easily, and excessive moisture can break the molecular chains of the material.

Of course, product quality variations are not always visible, which means that careful testing of final products is also important. However, it is also necessary to carefully monitor moisture levels during the production process, through continuous measuring, monitoring, and analysis. This is especially significant in multicomponent moulding, where successful drying is very important in the optimisation of bonding with components. For example, some elastomers which normally do not need to be dried, have to be dried during certain property modifications.

One of the challenges is that not all of the drying equipment used by plastic moulding companies, including Camteam, is factory-fitted with proper moisture measurement technology. This means that it is each manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that they maintain the right level of dryness without using excess energy. In addition, even drying units that include integrated moisture measurement sensors regularly require manual checking and calibration.

In addition to increasing demand for higher quality, the plastics industry is also seeking to improve sustainability. For example, products are required to be longer-lasting, and electric vehicles need more plastic parts than fossil fuel vehicles to operate efficiently.

With many of Camteam’s customers ordering products that require more accurate production monitoring and control, injection moulding specialist Matti Majava was keen to investigate the best ways to optimise drying processes. “The way forward is to enhance the plastics injection process and by understanding more about material characteristics,” Majava explains. “On top of this, the move away from oil-based materials means that we need to expand our knowledge about new material bases and additives that have the right qualities.”

Matti already knew some of Vaisala’s technical experts, so he contacted them in 2022 to learn more about his best options regarding high-accuracy moisture measurements. As it happened, Vaisala was just then completing pre-launch testing of their Indigo80 portable moisture measuring instrument, and invited Camteam to play an important testing role in the final development stages.

Reporting on his experience with the new instrument, Majava says: “The Indigo80 is designed to check the dew point at different stages of the mould injection process, and we really liked how simple it was to use, and that it had all the features we need, including portability and easy handling during measurements.”

In addition to spot-checks Majava also has a requirement to log data for a longer time. “We particularly appreciated the option to hang the Indigo80 near the drying machines and to leave it logging measurements, for review at a later time,” he explains.

Typically, Matti checks various process conditions with the Indigo80 on a daily basis, and this data is used to inform his decisions. For example, certain drying processes can be shut down sooner when – thanks to the Indigo80’s accuracy – optimal dryness has been reached, which saves both time and energy.

During this pre-launch evaluation, Majava suggested useful improvements to the product’s cable design as well as the possibility to save not only numerical data but also the device’s graphical visualisations. Expressing his pleasure with the successful partnership between Camteam and Vaisala, Majava says: “We were especially pleased that Vaisala encouraged our opinions and really took our input seriously. Consequently, we are very open to further co-operation and process development with Vaisala.”

In summary, market demand for higher quality and improved sustainability is driving the requirement for more knowledge about materials and their behaviour characteristics when selecting raw materials for different products and processes. This in turn increases the need for advanced moisture measurement technology such as that provided by the Vaisala Indigo80.

She has also implemented ambitious plans promoting supply chain reliability for customers within European markets; particularly promoting localised manufacturing that enables customers to order custom-made products quickly and easily.

There is a common misconception amongst European manufacturers and Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers that’ for volume production, the predominant producer of parts is China; especially for CNC machined parts and injection moulded parts. Isabelle is keen to change that notion.

"I am thrilled to have joined the team at Quickparts. In my previous roles, I worked for companies that had to turn to China to buy production parts, which resulted in high minimum order quantity upfront payments, long lead-times, and huge storage costs. I was surprised to learn that it's possible for any size of company to work with a local manufacturer like Quickparts. Quickparts is not just for highly engineered prototypes, but it also delivers on low and mid volume production runs. Quickparts owns six state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, equipped with the latest additive and traditional manufacturing technologies. Three of these are in Europe. There’s no minimum order quantity, pricing is competitive, lead times are short, the emphasis is on quality, and we have some exceptional local expertise,” Isabelle stated. “So, my main goal is for European manufacturers to learn about our services, and to know that Quickparts can meet their needs locally."

What role AR and VR can play in the industrial sector?

"We've got the software we need, but the hardware has some catching up to do!"

Apple's Vision Pro announcement has sparked a renewed interest in the world of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Looking through the lens of industrial environments, these technologies have already made significant contributions in manufacturing, maintenance, and training processes. In this article, we’ll examine key areas in which they hold potentially transformative power for the industrial sector with input from Hubs’ in-house engineers as well as other industry experts.

A primer on augmented and virtual reality.
Augmented reality, often abbreviated as AR, is a technology that superimposes digital information or virtual objects, such as images, videos, or 3D models, onto the real world. AR enables users to interact with and manipulate this digital content in real-time, creating immersive experiences through devices like smartphones, tablets, or specialized AR glasses.

On the other hand, virtual reality, known as VR, is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment that users can interact with and explore. VR typically involves wearing a headset that displays virtual content and may include additional peripherals like hand controllers or haptic feedback devices.

How can you use AR and VR in the industrial sector?
In the industrial sector, AR is employed to enhance worker productivity and accuracy by overlaying digital instructions, real-time data, and visual cues onto machinery or workstations. This aids in assembly, quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting, reducing errors and downtime.

VR, on the other hand, offers immersive simulations for training purposes, allowing workers to practice complex procedures or hazardous scenarios in a safe virtual environment. This helps them to acquire new skills, mitigate risks and save costs.

Overall, AR and VR empower the industrial sector with innovative solutions that optimize productivity, efficiency, and safety. Here are five examples of applications.

Factory layout planning.

AR and VR can revolutionize factory layout planning by providing immersive and interactive experiences of a factory before it is constructed. With AR, designers can overlay digital models onto physical spaces, allowing them to visualize how different equipment and layouts will fit within the factory environment. This can help identify potential design flaws or bottlenecks before construction begins, saving time and reducing cost. XYZ Reality uses AR to ensure precision in prefabricated construction (right).

VR, meanwhile, can enable stakeholders to virtually explore and interact with the planned layout, providing a realistic sense of scale and perspective. This allows for easy modifications and optimizations, facilitating collaborative decision-making among architects, engineers, and factory managers.

Operator training simulation.
AR and VR can also offer valuable training simulations for operators. With AR, operators can make use of real-time, contextual information overlaid on physical equipment, guiding them through complex procedures and enhancing their understanding of equipment operation.

VR can create immersive environments in which operators can practice handling various scenarios in a safe and controlled manner. By replicating real-world situations, trainees can gain hands-on experience, improve their skills, and learn how to respond to different challenges.

Real-time AR instructions.
Through wearable AR devices or mobile applications, workers can receive contextual information overlaid on their field of view, such as step-by-step instructions, safety guidelines, or equipment specifications.

Real-time AR instructions can be particularly beneficial in complex assembly processes, maintenance tasks, or quality control procedures, where precision and accuracy are extremely important. Companies like Airbus have already integrated Microsoft’s mixed reality Hololens into its factory processes.

Remote maintenance.
AR and VR can transform remote maintenance by enabling technicians to collaborate with experts from anywhere in the world.

With AR, technicians at the site can wear smart glasses or use mobile devices to stream live video to remote experts. Experts can then overlay virtual instructions or annotations onto the technician's view, guiding them through the troubleshooting or repair process in real time. This significantly reduces travel costs and downtime, as experts can diagnose and provide guidance without physically being present. German brand Oculavis (right)has demonstrated such capabilities over the last couple of years.

Safety alerts and evacuation.
AR and VR technologies can play crucial roles in safety alerts and evacuation procedures. AR can provide real-time safety alerts and warnings by overlaying visual cues or instructions onto the user's field of view. For example, in hazardous environments, AR can highlight potential dangers, mark safe pathways, or display emergency protocols.

VR can simulate emergency scenarios, allowing users to experience and practice evacuation procedures in a realistic virtual environment. This enables individuals to familiarize themselves with emergency routes, equipment locations, and evacuation protocols, leading to better preparedness and faster response times during actual emergencies. Additionally, VR simulations can help identify potential flaws or bottlenecks in evacuation plans.

What’s next for AR and VR in the industrial sector?
For further insights on where AR/VR currently stands in the industrial context, and to identify the steps needed before it could play a more significant role, Hubs reached out to experts in design and manufacturing. Here's what they had to tell us.

According to Charles Goin of Virginia-based firm Goindesign, VR and AR are where Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) in the architectural engineering and construction market were 10 years ago. "We've got the software we need, but the hardware has some catching up to do," he says. In his opinion, AR seems to hold the edge over VR, until VR becomes photorealistic, which again is going to be hardware-driven. The biggest moves in that field were, of course, made by Meta, HTC, Valve, and now Apple. Given that others paved the way but didn't quite strike gold, it will be interesting to see where Apple takes it.

Robert Jones, Manufacturing Engineer at Nissha Medical Technologies, also sees the huge potential of AR technology in the manufacturing space in training operators as well as remote maintenance. "In our facility, we use both manual and semi-automated processes to manufacture safe and functional medical devices. Training operators for these tasks can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. An AR-based program could transform this, offering real-time work instructions for efficient assembly. Paired with AI, it could even provide real-time alerts and corrective actions."

The areas listed above are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to AR and VR in the industrial sector. Because both technologies are constantly evolving and improving, new applications and use cases are often introduced, resulting in increasingly sophisticated ways of interacting with industrial environments.

As AR advances, for example, the technology may become more compact and wearable, with devices like smart glasses becoming more lightweight and comfortable. This will make AR more accessible and practical for workers, allowing for hands-free operation and better integration into existing workflows.

Software for servo-presses.

Baumüller is introducing an update for the current complete software package for the control of servo presses on the market with their Motion-Axis Servo Press software template. The company offers a complete system for servo presses consisting of the engineering, hardware, and software. The Motion-Axis Servo Press software template has now been updated and the new version offers numerous new functions.

The existing version of the software template could already be used to couple multiple motors in a synchronous position. Intelligent energy management was also already included in the package. A new feature is the automatic alignment of the system boundaries when creating this curve. This function enables the machine's performance and productivity to be increased. An interface for communication with the higher-level control is also now a standard feature in the new version.

New version: Machine template for control, visualization and drives.
Baumüller's software templates save developers a lot of time: The templates already include a large number of the required functions. In addition to motion modules, the package also includes templates for functions such as curve generator for press movement or a prepared used interface. These therefore do not have to be set up by the developer for a new project, but instead only have to be selected and parameterized at the start. Routine tasks, such as instancing modules or linking variables to the modules, are no longer necessary. The machine programmer no longer has to worry about the basics in the development, but can use the time saved entirely for process programming instead.

With the Motion-Axis Servo Press software template, especially for servo eccentric presses, the company is now publishing an update of its tried and tested servo press templates with further performance improvements. Other kinematics can be implemented on request.

For maximum speed: Intelligent curve generator.
With the intelligent curve generator, the user can either freely enter their press profile or use various predefined curves. In case of manual input, the customer can choose whether to enter the data points linearly (ram) or as an angle (crank shaft). To achieve a highly flexible movement sequence, profiles with up to 20 interpolation points (data points) can be designed. Further, not only standard curves, but also the user's own curves (recipes) can be loaded and further processed. In addition to the conventional curve input (full stroke), the customer can also operate the press in the pendulum stroke for higher numbers of cycles.

An absolute new feature is the plausibility check integrated in the curve generator. Depending on the movement and load profile, all relevant data are checked automatically for compliance with the system-related limit values. If the system limit is met, the maximum machine speed is determined in the next step. This process check increases productivity and also additionally protects both the power electronics and the mechanical components.

During the check, among other things the linear movement of the ram and the rotating movement of the crankshaft are each examined in the curve generator with regard to their position, speed and acceleration. Other parameters such as inertia, change in force of the press, motor torque, current and power limits are also used for the check.

In addition to the new features, the Motion-Axis Servo Press template also implements tried and tested basic functions such as soft start and stop, stop in the top dead center, fast stop in the event of emergency off, automatic traversing to the top dead center and continuously adjustable traversing speed.

Conclusion
With its software template, Baumüller has for many years been consistently moving towards being a full-range solutions provider. In addition to the software package, the system solution for servo presses includes the complete main drive system with high-torque motors, servo converters, and mains rectifier units, including control cabinet construction, as well as the control technology with hardware.

Powering semiconductor automatic optical inspection.

Facing Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) applications relating to, and caused by the shortcomings of consumer DRAM.

The recent launch of Innodisk AI provides a complete AI solution for industrial integrators, DDR5 series DRAM plays a key role for a variety of applications, including Automated Optical Inspection solutions. With the rise in demand for semiconductors, and the trend towards smaller and smaller processes, the need for automatic systems to detect semiconductor production defects has grown significantly. AOI systems are now used at every step of the semiconductor manufacturing process, and their stability is paramount to production efficiency.

Modern AOI systems face three core issues that Innodisk’s DDR5 RDIMM (registered memory) help to solve: memory bandwidth, accuracy, and high temperatures.

Memory Bandwidth.
Due to the high memory bandwidth needed for training models, AOI systems often struggle when lower capacity modules are used. Innodisk’s DDR5 RDIMM solves this issue with large capacities, including 32GB and 64GB modules.

Accuracy.
Due to semiconductor processes going down to the nanometer level, the resolution requirement and accuracy requirements for AOI systems has increased. Innodisk’s DDR5 RDIMM features a new dual 40-bit sub-channel architecture, and supports rigorous side-band ECC, which can handle AOI’s high-accuracy detection demands.

High Temperatures.
The high-speed and high-precision inspection that AOI systems provide generates high amounts of heat at the DRAM level, and this can cause overall system temperatures to rise sharply. Innodisk’s DDR5 RDIMM solves these heat concerns via a two-pronged strategy, involving an integration of both hardware and software. Two thermal sensors on the modules detect ambient temperatures, and two software tools: iCAP (Innodisk Cloud Administration Platform), and iSMART monitor temperatures and send warning messages.

Although memory technology is constantly being updated, Innodisk’s observation of the industry's current situation shows that customers' demands for new technologies vary greatly.
