Mag Meter with no restriction.

Proline Promag W is the world’s first electromagnetic flowmeter without measuring tube restriction, resulting in reliable measurements independent of the flow profile and the mounting location.

Promag W featuring the “0 x DN full bore” option, is a solution for a close-knit pipeline network or obstacles in pipes. This is the first mag meter of its kind in the world, providing maximum measuring performance without tube restriction, and thus without pressure loss.

Endress+Hauser's Promag W 300/400/500 flowmeters with the “0 x DN full bore” option measure with high accuracy (±0.5%), even directly downstream of pipe bends, T fittings, or insertion devices. They are particularly suitable for installation in tight spaces, such as compact systems or skids, because they do not need any inlet or outlet runs. The Promag W (0 x DN full bore) can easily handle swirls that frequently occur downstream of obstacles such as pipe bends and insertion devices, and even those downstream of unknown obstacles such as build-up on the pipe wall, protruding seals or different inside diameters.

The innovative measuring concept of the Promag W (0 x DN) features multiple measuring electrodes to detect flow. These electrodes generate a substantially higher density of measured data than standard devices. Together with the refined signal analysis, reliable measurement results are realized in swirl conditions.

Previously, in case of disturbances in the pipeline flow, plant operators either had to comply with the recommended inlet and outlet runs, or use a device with a restricted measuring tube to condition swirls within a very short tube section. In many cases, however, sufficiently long straight pipe sections are not present, and restrictions always cause pressure loss. This leads to increased energy consumption for pump operation and, as a result, higher energy costs.

The new “0 x DN full bore” option allows installation without inlet and outlet runs and without restriction, solving both challenges to deliver reliable measured values, flexible installation and cost-efficient measuring operation.

Promag W can be combined with different transmitters: as a compact version (Proline 300 and 400), or as a remote version (Proline 400 and 500) with up to four inputs and outputs. Proline transmitters make no compromises in terms of performance and accuracy. The digital signal processing begins in the smart sensor and is the basis for a reliable, highly accurate measurement. Full access to all measurement data, including diagnostic data acquired by Heartbeat Technology, is possible at any time via digital data transmission.

Automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

CoreTechnologie GmbH (CT) has added another innovation to the 3D_Evolution Simplifier software: As the first software on the market, the latest version of the Simplifier now allows for a fully automatic calculation of the smallest sphere diameter that surrounds a part or an assembly. With the new function, additional to the generation of a reduced envelope geometry models the Simplifier enables a time-saving and automated calculation of the optimal packaging.

In addition to the diameter calculation according to DIN EN ISO 8062-1, minimal packaging dimensions can be calculated in the form of a box and output as a CAD model of any major format. The determination of the smallest possible packaging dimensions, i.e. the smallest possible space, is used, for example, to optimize logistics costs and to minimize the cost of materials for packaging individual parts or assemblies with a very complex shape. In the past, this used to be a time-consuming manual process that can now be carried out automatically within seconds.

The 3D_Evolution Simplifier software is used by leading companies for fast and automatic data simplification as well as for the conversion of CAD models of all common formats such as Catia, NX, Solidworks, Creo, Inventor, Step, JT and many more. The creation of an envelope geometry is the solution to work smoothly and quickly with extensive and often too detailed 3D original data in CAD, VR and simulation systems. In terms of data quality, the tool enables the conversion of perfect solid models through data analysis and correction functions. In addition to protecting the know-how by creating the envelope models, the sophisticated technology at the same time also significantly reduces the file size as well as the elements that have to be displayed.

Robert V Gilbert. (Manotherm) R.I.P.

The death has been announced of Bob Gilbert last week.

Well known in the Irish automation industry he was founder of Manotherm in the 1960s. Originally in Corn Exchange Buildings in Dublin city centre. It then moved to its current location on the Walkinstown Road.

His sometimes gruff manner hid an honest and trustworthy business man not without a droll sense of humour. He dealt with his customers honestly and expected to be treated in the same way.

He was a staunch supporter of Read-out when it was a printed periodical and there was always a hearty welcome when the writer called. He was alway interested in what was happening in the world of Irish instrumentation.

We extend our condolences to his wife and partner, Amy and to his son Robert.

His death notice may be viewed here.

Broadband vector network analyser.

The VectorStar™ ME7838G broadband vector network analyzer (VNA) from Anritsu is the industry’s first VNA capable of making measurements from 70 kHz to 220 GHz in a single sweep. By offering unprecedented frequency coverage, the new VectorStar VNA allows engineers to more accurately and efficiently characterize devices over a much broader range of frequencies to provide accurate device models, thus optimizing the chance for accurate simulations and opportunity to reduce design turns.

Consistently providing the industry’s widest single sweep broadband coverage for improved device modeling is achieved because the VectorStar VNA system incorporates the Anritsu Non-linear Transmission Line (NLTL) millimeter-wave (mmWave) modules. An innovative design allows the 220 GHz probe to connect directly to the mmWave module for accurate, stable on-wafer measurements, thereby avoiding the limits of coaxial connectors at sub-terahertz frequencies.

The 220 GHz ME7838G leverages Anritsu’s proven VectorStar broadband platform’s ability to go beyond traditional boundaries in a single sweep without the need to reconstruct the wafer probe station from 110 GHz to higher waveguide bands. Because of the design, engineers can measure a wide range of circuits on the same wafer without transferring from a coax microwave VNA to coax mmWave VNA or waveguide mmWave VNA. The system reduces measurement time of the entire wafer, improves measurement accuracy of wideband devices by eliminating the need for waveguide concatenation, and delivers wafer probe station cost efficiencies by reducing the number of VNA reconfigurations.

The ME7838G addresses the market need to conduct on-wafer measurements that span into the upper mmWave frequencies for more accurate device characterization. The VectorStar-based broadband system gives engineers confidence in the systems they are designing by characterizing the devices from near-DC to well beyond the operating frequency, for more accurate modeling.

Compact servo drive.

Festo has expanded its range of servo drives with the introduction of the CMMT-ST. Complementing the existing CMMT-AS, this new servo drive is equally reliable but much more compact and economical. These characteristics make it ideal for point-to-point and interpolating motion in demanding applications in assembly and handling technology, packaging machines or in the electronics industry.

The CMMT-ST enables challenging dynamic motions for small servo motors and all stepper motors with a continuous power requirement of up to 300 W. It has a power capacity of 2.5 kW, so requires less cooling than its big brother and needs just half the installation space.

It is particularly suitable for various Ethernet-based bus systems and can be seamlessly integrated into the controller environments of different manufacturers. The CMMT-ST is based on the same platform as the CMMT-AS and works best in combination with the EMMS-ST stepper motor from Festo.

Commissioning the CMMT-ST takes just a few minutes with the Festo Automation Suite. Although the CMMT-ST offers a more compact, cheaper option than the CMMT-AS, the connection and communication concept, functional modules and standard safety features remain unchanged. The consistent control concept means that users can combine the CMMT-AS and CMMT-ST as a servo drive for both large and small axes.

The free Festo Automation Suite is the main software of the constantly expanding Festo Automation Platform, which is entering the automation market with numerous new products and solutions from the mechanical system to the cloud. It combines the parameterisation, programming and maintenance of electric components from Festo in one program. It also enables the entire drive package, from the mechanical system to the controller, to be commissioned in just a few intuitive steps.

The CMMT-ST servo drive is an important part of the Festo philosophy of seamless connectivity: the ability to connect a workpiece completely through to the cloud, from its mechanical connections and electrical interfaces to commissioning and controller programming. Festo simplifies the work of machine builders and automation engineers with simple connectivity spanning mechanical, electrical, hardware and software interfaces.

Measurement in all colour scales.

The OMA-300 process analyzer from Applied Analytics is proven in providing continuous, real time measurements in all color scales, including Saybolt, APHA, ASTM D1500, etc. giving an accurate and reliable measurement using spectroscopy based technology.

The production of liquid fuels is a complex process with many variables that will affect the quality of the product. The color of a liquid stream is considered an indicator of product quality. Slight changes in color can be evidence of equipment failure, dips in process efficiency, overheating, distillation column malfunction and more. The Saybolt scale allows us to measure color with a numerical value, and we can correlate the color to the overall quality of the product.

The Saybolt color scale is used for grading light colored petroleum products including kerosene, naphthas, condensates, NGL in midstream, etc. The range of the Saybolt scale is -16 (dark yellow) to +30 (nearly transparent clear). There are several widely accepted color scales, Saybolt being one of them, with the purpose of observing the product quality.

London hotspots are smart.

The Breathe London project has been announced as the winner of a SMART 50 Award by Smart Cities Connect, within the Digital Transformation category. Created to better understand Londoners’ exposure to air pollution, Breathe London combines state-of-the-art technology with new data analytics, delivering real-time air quality data at a hyperlocal level in the city.

AQMesh pod London installation
The monitoring technology employed in the project’s network of over 100 AQMesh pods and in two Google Street View Cars was supplied by ACOEM Air Monitors. Their Managing Director Felicity Sharp congratulated all of the partners in the Breathe London project. “This has been a tremendous collaborative effort, and I am delighted that our work is being recognised globally.

“The benefits of hyperlocal air quality data are already being realised in London and we hope that this can be recreated all over the world. The measurement of air pollution at an unprecedented scale and scope helps to identify pollution hotspots and informs the design and assessment of mitigation measures. It also provides local information that helps citizens take their own pollution reduction initiatives and make informed decisions such as where to walk, cycle, play and live.”

“London’s pollution problem is a health crisis, and we are proud to be part of this ambitious project shining a light on air quality,” said Elizabeth Fonseca, senior air quality manager at Environmental Defense Fund Europe, one of the project’s leading partners. “Lessons learned from Breathe London can help other cities trying to gain a better understanding of their pollution and protect public health.”

Monitoring data from the AQ Mesh pods is compared against data from London’s existing regulatory grade monitoring network. Both open-source and available for download, the stationary and mobile data are presented on an innovative platform to improve the public’s understanding of the varying presence of pollution across both time and space. See www.breathelondon.org.

By assessing and documenting the benefits of policy interventions, such as London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, Breathe London is lowering the barriers for other cities to undertake sophisticated monitoring and modelling, and informing smarter, targeted policy.

A representative from Environmental Defense Fund Europe will be presented with the Breathe London award at the 2020 Smart 50 Awards Gala, which takes place during April in Denver, Colorado.

Protecting offshore process analysers.

Shelters fabricated from glassfibre-reinforced polyester are protecting gas metering instrumentation from the harsh North Sea environment on an offshore platform upgrade project engineered by Oil & Gas Systems. Two outdoor shelters - supplied by Intertec Instrumentation - provide lightweight and corrosion-resistant protection for gas chromatograph analyzers and process transmitters mounted above new natural gas export pipelines connecting the platform to an onshore British gas terminal. The instrumentation provides critical monitoring data on gas quality as part of the custody transfer metering system.

Installed on North Sea platform
This particular platform upgrade project presented a number of challenges, including the harsh operating environment of the southern North Sea, and the space and weight restrictions of adding the new facilities onto a working platform. Metering systems for fiscal, allocation and custody transfer applications are a significant part of the systems integration work of Oil & Gas Systems (OGS) - which has a reputation for being able to rapidly design and build efficient solutions for complex project requirements.

Glassfibre-reinforced polyester (GRP) materials were specified to protect the instrumentation. This allowed weight to be reduced significantly compared with metal shelters. GRP construction also provided excellent protection against both the harsh weather in the offshore location, and the local environmental conditions. Intertec Instrumentation was selected to build the custom GRP shelters because of previous good experience of working with them on projects, including shelters and enclosures already installed in the same gas field.

The lightness of GRP compared to steel helped to reduce the size and weight of the metalwork structure that mounts the shelters directly above the export pipelines. The location - in the middle of a crowded working platform - also presented access difficulties. So, natural ventilation according to IEC EN DIN 61285 was specified. This eliminates routine maintenance visits that would be required with other shelter ventilation approaches such as fans or an HVAC system.

Gas chromatograph inside shelter
To support natural ventilation for safe operation in the hazardous environment, Intertec supplied explosion-proof heaters and installed louvre panels at the top and bottom of shelter walls. This maintains the interior environment a few degrees above ambient temperature, and ensures an efficient convection cycle to meet the air change requirements of OGS. All of the shelter fittings, apart from the finned aluminium bodies of the heaters, are fabricated from 316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance - including the panic bar door opening mechanism.

"It can be a significant challenge to add new facilities into existing processing plants, and especially so when they are located offshore," says Anthony Dingle, OGS's Sales Manager. "Intertec's ability to design and build custom enclosure solutions was a big help to us in meeting the design constraints of this complex and fast-track offshore instrumentation project."

In total, two walk-in shelters and two large cabinets were built by Intertec to meet the custom shape, size and weight constraints. Each shelter houses an identical instrumentation system including pressure reduction sample conditioning equipment, a Danalyzer gas chromatograph, Rosemount pressure transmitters, calibration facilities and various safety devices and accessories. The two cabinets house cylinders to supply the required gas for calibration purposes, along with associated pressure regulation, measurement instruments, tubing connection and flow control components.

The GRP material used by Intertec to build the shelters and cabinets is a proprietary multi-layer composite with moulded GRP panels enclosing polyurethane foam insulation, protected by gel-coated surfaces.

Shelter under construction in assembly facility
This composite material has a very high thermal resistance, reducing the amount of energy required to heat equipment. A further benefit of Intertec’s approach to shelter fabrication is an advanced gel-coat, which is applied in a much thicker layer than alternatives such as paint. It protects against ultraviolet (UV), and is highly effective against abrasion. It offers exceptional environmental protection and resistance to ‘corrosion’ (GRP does not rust or degrade in any meaningful way), allowing maintenance-free lifecycles of 30-40 years - more than enough to meet the anticipated cease of production date for the platform.

The gel-coat also incorporates a unique nanotechnology treatment that provides conductivity to dissipate static electric charges safely to ground - protecting against sparking in hazardous areas. Developed for Intertec by BÜFA, the coating employs single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to provide conductivity. Because the SWCNTs are only around 1-2 nanometres in diameter, they enhance surface smoothness. The gloss retention after accelerated weathering tests of this surface is some 50% better than the previous coating technologies used. This technology is behind the significant improvement in resistance to UV of Intertec's shelters. Previously, exposure to high UV levels over the long term could lead to surface roughening - which is sometimes referred to as 'chalking' or 'frosting'. Intertec's weathering tests have demonstrated that the new coating will withstand extended exposure to very high UV levels - providing hitherto unachievable protection for GRP field enclosures destined for ultra-harsh environments such as offshore platforms, deserts and Arctic environments.

Co-operation in Industrie 4.0

Dunkermotoren becomes part of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance

Nils Herzberg, Uwe Lorenz -
OpenIndustry/Dunkermotoren
The digitalisation of factories and plants as well as the Internet of Things promise ever new possibilities for the automation industry. In this development, a wide variety of technologies from the field level to the cloud and also across different stages of the value chain must be combined across manufacturers to create tangible added value for our customers. The supreme discipline here is that within such an ecosystem, all participants speak the same language and no time-consuming integration is required.

Dunkermotoren has accepted this challenging discipline. Pulse valve more effective, efficient and convenient.

Emerson is introducing its newly redesigned ASCO™ Series 353 Pulse Valve, designed to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and end-users achieve a more effective, efficient and convenient bag cleaning every time.

With a higher peak pressure, wider temperature range, patented quick mount clamp connection and overall part simplification, the new series provides longer bag and filter life and lower maintenance.

The new valve can be used in a wide range of applications, including concrete processing, grain, agriculture and feed, metalworking (abrasive blasting), food processing, foundries, pharmaceutical, mining, rubber mixing/processing, metal processing, lime industry, cement factories, power plants and steel mills.

Without optimum peak pressure, dust collector cleaning becomes inefficient and the consumption of compressed air rises. Because it hits peak pressure quickly, the Series 353 creates a more effective cleaning process. The new design also leads to improved airflow through the filter bags or cartridges for optimized dust collector performance while reducing costly compressed air consumption.

“Through a rigorous engineering design and testing process, Emerson has optimized the ASCO Series 353 Pulse Valve to open, hit peak pressure and close faster than the competition. This gives our customers optimized filter cleaning and significant compressed air savings across all reverse-jet dust collector system applications,” said vice president of global marketing for Emerson’s industrial automation business, Erik VanLaningham.

In addition, the valve is designed with fewer moving parts for increased reliability and simplified maintenance. A longer valve lifespan — over one million cycles on average — results in more time between valve maintenance cycles.

The Series 353 also offers a patented quick mount clamp connection, providing faster, easier installation, as well as connection options, like the classic dresser connection and threaded version.

Emerson’s redesigned Series 353 provides a broader operating temperature range of -40°C to 140°C (-40°F to 284°F), making it suitable for moderate-to-harsh industrial and hazardous environments.

Emergency switches for Ex zones.

With these two series, steute has once again expanded its range of robust "Extreme" switchgear for explosive zones. Typical applications for these devices include international mining, as well as the production of chemicals and construction materials.

The "Extreme" versions of the new steute ZS 92/ZS 92 SR emergency pull wire and belt alignment switches have already been tried and tested in practice. Design features include very robust die-cast aluminium housings with multiple coatings (passivation, base coat, powder coating), a high protection class (IP 65) and significantly reduced actuation force and actuation travel compared to their predecessors. This makes it easier to actuate the emergency stop function and also means reliable fulfilment of all relevant international standards (for e.g. emergency stop switchgear, emergency pull wire s witches or the safety of continuous conveyor equipment).

The emergency pull wire switches in the Ex ZS 92 S series will be available with ATEX/IECEx approvals for zones 1 (gas Ex) and 21 (dust Ex). The belt alignment switches in the Ex ZS 92 SR series will be approved for zone 21 (dust Ex).

Both series have very long lifetimes, even in adverse ambient conditions, and are extremely versatile, for example featuring many different mounting options. These new Ex switches are available in many different configurations for both the actuation lever and the release lever. This means that they can be installed in more or less any conceivable operational position, including for the first time at the back of a machine or belt.

Simple adjustment of the actuation point in 5o steps (between 5o and 35o for two switching inserts) further increases the versatility of the Ex ZS 92 SR in practical applications. The mounting dimensions are compatible not only with its predecessor, the Ex ZS 90 series, but also with other belt alignment and emergency pull wire switches, making it easy to retrofit the new switches on existing conveyors and machines.

The Ex ZS 92 S can be used in temperatures from -10 to +55oC in conjunction with maximum wire lengths of 2 x 100 m. The position of the Ex ZS 92 SR belt alignment lever can be adjusted in 12o steps to suit individual requirements.

Risk assessments of on-site contamination.

IGE Consulting, is using a TigerLT handheld photoionisation detector (PID) from Ion Science – leading global manufacturer of high-performance gas detection instrumentation for environmental or occupational health applications – to provide comprehensive risk assessments of on-site contamination.

Supplied by Shawcity, the instrument was chosen for its flexible lamp design options that target different ranges and types of gases, and is monitoring potentially dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soils which may cause harm to human health or compromise safety.

IGE Consulting undertakes desk studies and intrusive site investigation works on sites to be developed into residential or commercial developments. The company operates across Britain and provides a tailored service to meet client requirements such as pre-acquisition / planning development, abnormal costing evaluations, site investigation works and construction efficiency savings.

Molly Brown, Geo-environmental Engineer at IGE Consulting comments: “We previously hired the Ion Science TigerLT  for monitoring VOCs in soils so have used it numerous times with great success. To save costs in the long term, it made sense to purchase one of the instruments. It also adds value to our site investigations and reports as we are able to provide a more comprehensive risk assessment.

“One of the most appealing features of the TigerLT for us is the different options for lamps which allow various VOC gases to be detected. For example, we can choose lamps that give us a wide range or target specific ranges if we need to look for a particular type of VOC gas.”

The unit offers worldwide Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, is a streamlined, low-cost version of Ion Science’s well proven Tiger PID model.

Like all Ion Science PID instruments, the TigerLT  incorporates the company’s market-leading PID technology with advanced patented fence electrode system. This three-electrode format ensures increased resistance to humidity and contamination for ultimate reliability and accuracy in the field.

With a detection range of 0.1 - 5,000 ppm utilising a standard two-point calibration protocol, it also offers an unrivalled industry response time of just two seconds and equally quick clear down.

Both simple to operate and service, the TigerLT  offers easy access to the lamp and sensor with batteries that can be safely replaced in hazardous environments. The intrinsically safe instrument also meets ATEX, IECEx, North American and Canadian standards.

Molly continues: “The TigerLT instrument is working well and enables us to provide a more comprehensive risk assessment of on-site contamination and the associated human health risk.
“In fact, the TigerLT PID instrument has already reduced costs for one of our clients by locating a VOC hotspot and proving blanks elsewhere on site meaning they did not have to install a VOC barrier on proposed plots. This client now only has to install VOC barriers on four out of 54 locations.”

The key advantage of TigerLT over other similar, low-cost handheld PID instruments is its market-leading accuracy and run time due to its anti-contamination and humidity-resistant design. Another attribute is its global Intrinsic Safety certification. Although the accreditation process can differ from country to country, the unit can be used in explosive hazardous areas such as within petrochemical plants that are located anywhere in the world.

The TigerLT six pin MiniPID detector cell with anti-contamination design dramatically extends run time in the field. Low cost filters and lamps can be easily changed in minutes, minimising downtime.

It features long life rechargeable Li-ion batteries which give up to 24 hours usage. Fast battery charging allows the instrument to be fully charged in 6.5 hours, while eight hours of use can be achieved from 1.5 hours of charging time.

TigerLT features a protective, removable boot for harsh environments while a large, clear back-lit display allows for easy viewing in any light condition. It is IP65 rated against water ingress. An integrated torch is designed for directing the instrument’s probe into dimly lit areas. Other features include a loud 95 dB audible alarm and multiple language support.

Ready to use, straight out of the box, it does not require complicated set-up procedures via a PC to perform basic functions.

“The TigerLT  is performing well and as expected from our previous experience. The service provided by Shawcity was good with fast delivery. Overall, we are very happy and would recommend the instrument to other environmental and geotechnical consultancies,” Molly concludes.

Training neural networks!

IDS NXT ocean is an all-in-one solution that makes it particularly easy for users to get started with AI-based image processing. From camera hardware including a self-developed AI core to intuitive training software for creating individual artificial neural networks and support, everything comes from a single source. This is unique in the image processing market. Users only need their application expertise and sample images to create a neural network.

With the help of the IDS NXT lighthouse cloud software, even non-experts without prior knowledge of artificial intelligence or camera programming can train an AI classifier with their own image data. Since it is a web application, all functions and the necessary infrastructure for creating the neural network are immediately available. This means that users do not have to set up their own development environment first, but can start training their own neural network right away. This involves three basic steps: To upload sample images, to label the images and then to start the fully automatic training. The generated network can then be executed directly on the IDS NXT industrial cameras, turning them into powerful inference cameras.

An inference camera can apply the "knowledge" acquired through deep learning to new data. This makes it possible to automatically solve tasks that would either not be possible with rule-based image processing, or would require great effort. Since IDS NXT industrial cameras have a special AI core, neural networks are hardware-accelerated and run directly on the devices – enabling inference times of just a few milliseconds. With features such as C-mount, robust housing, GigE network connection with RJ45 or M12 connectors, RS232 interface and REST web interface, they are also fully-fledged industrial cameras. The IDS NXT rio and rome models are now available as serial cameras with different sensors and protection classes.

IDS also offers an IDS NXT ocean design-in kit which is particularly useful for anyone who wants to test the potential of AI for individual vision tasks. It provides all the components a user needs to create, train and run a neural network in his productive environment. In addition to an IDS NXT industrial camera with 1.6 MP Sony sensor, lens and cable, the package includes six months of access to the AI training software. The use of deep learning-based image processing for individual applications can thus be realized in a short time.
