Ensuring eVTOL safety and maintainability.

The single greatest hurdle for any new aircraft, especially a revolutionary one like an eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing), is achieving FAA Type Certification. Hottinger Brüel & Kjær (HBK)’s aerospace customer was faced with this challenge during development of a completely new, FAA-compliant scheduled maintenance program for its novel eVTOL aircraft, adapting traditional aviation safety standards (MSG-3) to a revolutionary and unproven aircraft architecture.*

By leveraging HBK’s ReliaSoft MPC Plus software, the aerospace customer’s engineers where able to systematically perform MSG-3 analysis, manage complex system hierarchies and efficiently generate the evidence-based maintenance tasks, required for certification.

This streamlined the creation of an optimised and data-driven maintenance program, significantly accelerating the path to FAA type certification, ensuring passenger safety, and establishing a scalable, cost-effective operational framework.

Unique sync solution for control systems and digital twins.

Keeps digital twins aligned with production plant operations to prevent configuration drift.

The Ovation™ Curation Tool is a first-of-its-kind synchronisation software for power and water control systems, delivering an easy way to maintain version control and detailed change history between multiple Ovation systems and simulators. The Curation Tool, released by Emerson, automates management of changes between power plant production systems and their digital twins to improve testing and training accuracy, save engineering time and enable faster troubleshooting and stronger governance.

One of the primary challenges of managing digital twins is ensuring that both the simulation and production are properly synchronised. Operators and engineers make regular changes to production systems to solve problems, improve performance and develop new control strategies. Over time, these changes cause the configuration of the plant’s control systems to drift from the digital twin simulation model. Manually tracking and implementing changes can take hours of engineering time, making the process both time-consuming and labour-intensive. The Ovation Curation Tool automatically tracks changes to the control system over time and enables fast and easy deployment of those changes to other control systems and simulations via an intuitive dashboard.

“Keeping a digital twin continually synchronised with live systems has always been a challenge, and that challenge continues to increase as workforce shortages make it more difficult to find and retain expert personnel,” said Rick Kephart, vice president of technology for Emerson’s power and water business. “The Ovation Curation Tool helps teams deliver lifecycle value for Emerson’s Ovation Digital Twin by making it easy to ensure simulations stay relevant, providing continuous benefit through improved training, testing, engineering and forecasting.”

The Curation Tool software can be set to run at an organisation’s desired frequency – weekly, monthly, ad-hoc – to automatically identify and track any changes made to the control system. Users no longer need to perform labour-intensive manual comparisons, and they have access to detailed change history and auditing via the intuitive dashboard, which shows what changed, who made the changes and when they occurred. This audit trail reduces the risk of undocumented or unexpected changes.

Once changes have been validated, a user can launch automated synchronisation between the production system and the digital twin, or between the digital twin and other Ovation control systems. Before deployment, the simulation snapshot impact analysis tool details any disruptions the changes will cause to the target system and suggests resolutions.

Using a system of repositories, the Curation Tool moves data between the production system and the simulator while maintaining synchronisation of the data. Multiple users can edit the same assets and merge their changes.

The Ovation Curation Tool will be on display at Emerson’s Ovation Users Group Conference 2026 from July 26-30 in Pittsburgh, PA USA.

Device communicator.

Faster, more precise communication to more devices with certified calibration, stronger security.

Emerson has redesigned its AMS Trex Device Communicator for easier, expanded and more intuitive use by field personnel. New hardware and software and increased security will make the newest version of the AMS Trex Device Communicator safer and more intuitive to use. Additional certifications and expanded connectivity will provide users with the capability to use the AMS Trex communicator for calibration activities, streamlining workflows and reducing the number of tools technicians need to learn and carry into the field.

The AMS Trex Device Communicator can connect to more than 2,500 field instruments from both Emerson and third-party manufacturers. As a result, many users wish to employ the AMS Trex communicator for calibration because they are familiar with the interface. However, legacy AMS Trex measurement tolerances were designed for reference rather than calibration, making them unsuitable for official calibration activities. As a result, technicians performing calibration typically needed to carry additional devices into the field, increasing complexity and requiring them to learn, manage and maintain multiple technologies.

The redesigned AMS Trex Device Communicator supports National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) traceability. Any measurements taken by the redesigned AMS Trex are NIST certified to ensure that measurement and sourcing of current are accurate enough for calibration activities.

“As more organizations embrace Emerson’s Boundless Automation vision for an architecture that seamlessly integrates the field, edge, and cloud, their maintenance and reliability teams will be able to manage more assets than ever before, driving a need for improved efficiency,” said Erik Lindhjem, vice president of Emerson’s reliability solutions business. “The new AMS Trex communicator can manage, configure and support field calibrations with a wide array of Emerson and third-party devices, helping teams make the most of their time and data.”

The redesigned AMS Trex Device Communicator also adds HART communication via Bluetooth®, which enables an extended application library and connectivity to Bluetooth devices in the field, expanding its use cases for maintenance and reliability activities. New security features on the platform also eliminate the risk that the device or the plant will be compromised by unauthorized software. The new AMS Trex Communicator features eight times the memory of its predecessor, as well as a quad-core processor and a new operating system that will look and function similarly to modern mobile devices.

Features of the service center include: Temperature calibrations accredited by ANAB in accordance with the internationally recognized ISO/IEC 17025:2017.

Extensive calibration temperature range for infrared pyrometers, thermometers, thermal imagers and scanners from 0°C to 2300°C / 32°F to 4172°F Opacity monitor certification to US EPA Performance Specification 1, using NIST-traceable standards

The US service center uses NIST traceable standards accredited to the international standard ISO 17025 (general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories). The calibration service verifies the accuracy of the instrument by quantifying errors and reporting them in a certificate.

The benefits of certification for instruments are numerous. Firstly, quantifying an instrument’s temperature measurement errors enables the operator to apply the error data to compensate and improve the practical measurement uncertainty. Also, performing traceable certification confirms compliance of the instrument, offering improved insight into its long-term performance, aiding process stability, improving quality, and minimizing expense.

Certification also means traceability to national and international standards - for measurements to be interchangeable, they must relate to a common standard. For temperature measurement, this standard is the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) and traceability refers to a chain of measurements linking an instrument’s performance to ITS-90. Certification under the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard assures the user that their instrument’s certification is traceable, giving continued confidence in interchange of measurement.

Larry Smith, Director of US-Sales, said, “Customers can be assured that our service center technicians carry out servicing and repairs to the highest standards to ensure safety and efficiency in your process. Approved and traceable certification equipment is used by fully trained technicians to carry out services, with specially manufactured standards that enable the accurate reporting of measurement uncertainties.”

Power to managed switches.

Technology prevents power drop during switch firmware upgrades

When deploying managed PoE switches in an industrial network, upgrading firmware is an inevitable action to enhance switch performance. However, upgrading typically requires devices powered by the switch's PoE to be shutdown for up to 15 minutes or more. As a result, data from these Powered Devices (PDs) that businesses rely upon to make informed decisions cannot be captured. PoE-powered PDs at risk include IP cameras, sensors, PLCs, VoIP phones, PoE lighting, and non-PoE switches.

Antaira provides an innovative new solution to this problem by integrating Persistent PoE technology into its 802.3bt PoE managed switches. This patented technology ensures power is continuously carried to PDs during firmware upgrades so data collection is not terminated, plus it prevents connected PDs from rebooting once power is restored. Uninterrupted PD availability is mission critical in IP video surveillance, Intelligent Traffic Systems, Smart Factories, remote kiosks, and automated parking — all applications that would benefit from Persistent PoE.

As enterprises modernize, they're increasingly adopting PD devices and facing greater exposure to the danger of lost PoE power that will compromise data collection and video monitoring. Antaira Persistent PoE technology mitigates this risk. Customers can opt for Antaira LMP-1204G-SFP-bt, LMP-0702G-SFP-bt or LMP-C602G-SFP-bt series managed switches, featuring a mix of 6 to 12 Ethernet and SFP fiber ports combined with 802.3bt PoE++ delivering up to 90W per port with the reliability of Persistent PoE.

Electrical maintenance inspections with partial discharge detection.

Kenter, a leading Dutch energy metering and management company with more than 30,000 customers, has transformed maintenance inspections through the fast and safe detection of partial discharge. Left undetected partial discharge can cause degradation of medium voltage installations which pose significant safety, efficiency and financial risks that are critical considerations in maintenance inspections.

Kenter is part of Alliander, the largest energy network operator in the Netherlands, and works to install, rent and maintain safe and reliable energy supplies to a wide range of businesses from small family-run bakeries through to electric vehicle manufacturers and large multinational chemical companies. Kenter offers innovative energy supply and measurement solutions to aid companies wanting to optimise their energy consumption. The company’s team of 300 maintenance specialists have greatly improved the speed and accuracy of scheduled maintenance inspections using an innovative handheld tool, the ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager from Fluke.

Managing maintenance schedules
Kenter provides 24/7 maintenance on the equipment required to deliver a safe and reliable power supply to customers nationwide. This service includes scheduled maintenance cycles which typically occur every three, five, six or 10 years. During scheduled maintenance, Kenter looks to coordinate a series of works to minimise disruptions to operations, including checking for partial discharge.

Partial discharge is typically caused by a minor defect which can result in thousands of smaller repetitive electrical discharges. The phenomenon often occurs around insulation on pieces of equipment, such as high-voltage lines, transformers, turbines, busbars and the inside of cabinets, and can impact energy supply due to mechanical, heat, and chemical damage to insulators and conductors. Fast and accurate inspections

The Fluke™ ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager allows maintenance engineers to quickly scan a customer’s electrical assets from a safe distance whilst operational, and immediately identify areas impacted by partial discharge. The image can be quickly analysed to detect the type of partial discharge, enabling the team to undertake appropriate maintenance. Users benefit from the tool’s ease-of-use, speed and accuracy, while customers can continue operations during maintenance inspections without the need for a plant shut-down.

According to Martin Damen, Technical Engineer Manager at Kenter, Fluke’s ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager has revolutionised maintenance inspections and is a critical tool for maintenance. “Being able to scan a whole installation in one go is a real game changer in regard to how quickly we can identify a partial discharge issue,” he said.

Dirk Kwik, Team Manager Service and Maintenance at Kenter, agreed: “Our engineers are focused on identifying issues and undertaking maintenance as quickly and safely as possible to minimise disruption to our customers’ businesses and avoiding costly unscheduled downtime.”

Benefits in application
A recent review at a customer’s site using Fluke’s ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager showed partial discharge was occurring on the switchgear installation. This had not been detected by staff as there was no distinctive smell or sound during the interim review and no malfunction issues had been reported. The customer was also reluctant to shut down operations for assessment using an oscilloscope. Failure to identify this issue could have significant consequences due to the ultimate risk of the switchgear failing. According to Damen, the cost to replace the switchgear could be in the region of €30,000 – and that’s without assessing the potential damage to the customer’s reputation, who work to tight deadlines, as a result of their business being offline.

The ii910 device has helped Kenter’s management team to deploy their workforce more effectively. More than 18 engineers are now fully competent using the ii910 with online training being rolled out to the national engineering team. The complexity of operating an oscilloscope resulted in a significantly higher amount of time required to train engineers to accurately detect partial discharge.

Innovative detection of partial discharge
The ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager was developed to help engineers quickly identify and locate partial discharges. The innovative detection tool has a seven-inch LCD touchscreen which overlays a SoundMap™ on a visual image for rapid identification of discharge or leaks between frequencies of 2-100 kHZ. The ii910 provides video recording of up to five minutes and has a battery life of at least six hours.

“The Fluke ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager was developed with the end-user in mind,” comments Tako Feron, Product Manager Acoustic Imaging at Fluke Corporation.
“A working group of electrical maintenance professionals from a range of companies helped to test and provide feedback on the product during its development. Their feedback was invaluable in helping us to address some of the pain points they face on a daily basis, and we continue to work with the group to add new features to the software.”

Automating measuring points safely and economically.

Through the combined use of an automatic cleaning control and a retractable probe housing, e.g. in pH measurement technology, the regularly required maintenance of the sensors can be reduced and thus the manual workload per measuring point minimised.

Compared to traditional, permanently installed measuring points, retractable probe housings offer the plant operator various advantages. Used correctly, benefits, for example in pH measurement technology, include a significant reduction in maintenance work on the measuring point, an extended lifespan of the sensors used and increased reliability and availability of the measurement value. At the same time, an efficient cleaning control is of essential importance to the safe and economical automation of the retractable probe housing.

With the new product EXmatic 470, Exner is bringing a successor to the established predecessor model EXmatic 460 onto the market. The new control impresses not just with the use of state-of-the-art technology. The construction as well as the available functions were also developed in a user-orientated manner. Thus, many technical features already known from the EXmatic 460 have been retained. These include the openness of the system, i.e. the control is not tied to a specific manufacturer of sensors or transmitters.

Simultaneously, operation has been simplified for the user with a clear menu structure and the use of a touch-sensitive colour display. Additionally, the new product type has even more flexibility in use. For instance, the EXmatic 470 control now allows up to three different media valves to be connected, meaning the user can make use of a larger selection of possible cleaning solutions e.g. in the event of stubborn soiling.

Analytics and live remote assistance to improve productivity and safety.

Emerson Integrates Augmented Reality into Plantweb™ Optics Software, Enhancing Remote Collaboration and Workforce Effectiveness

A not uncommon scenario. Most of the workforce has retired, leaving more than 40% with less than 5 years experience. They have a corporate training of course but most of the training still occurs on the job.  Augmented reality (AR) thus becomes the augmented brain of this retired workforce who are no longer here…Ideas, knowledge, and methods they used can be put into the system and extracted out when and where a problem arises.

A large plant will have many different systems on a site and difficulty in accessing personnel or information. Again AR can be of inestimable value in such a situation in guiding maintenance engineers to the site of a problem.

In the food & drink and other sectors where hygienic practices are of primary importance, ready and easy access to information or procedures is essential. AR is ready and able to provide this at a click.

These are just three possible applications where augmented reality can be of assistance in ensuring the smooth running of a plant in the 21st century.

Emerson have introduced augmented reality (AR) technology to its Plantweb™ Optics asset performance platform, delivering enhanced access to real-time diagnostics and analytics, as well as live remote assistance, to industrial plant workers responsible for maintaining and optimizing plant equipment. With AR technology integrated into Plantweb Optics, companies can improve productivity, collaboration and operational performance, without being limited by shortages of skilled workers or travel restrictions.

“Successful digital transformation programs that lead to Top Quartile performance have people and work practices as a key focus. Adopting innovative technology like augmented reality and institutionalizing best practices enable workers to add more value than ever to operational and business performance,” said Stuart Harris, group president for Emerson’s digital transformation business. “With these new Plantweb Optics technologies, customers can experience significant improvements in equipment reliability and the safety of their facilities.”

Plantweb Optics leverages artificial intelligence, machine learning analytics and data contextualization to provide real-time visibility into plant reliability and operational performance. Unlike standalone AR solutions that require custom engineering, AR is integrated into Plantweb Optics, providing immediate access to a wealth of data and translating into easier, less costly implementation and a faster return on investment. For use by manufacturers in the life sciences, food and beverage, chemical, metals and mining, power and water, pulp and paper and energy industries, Plantweb Optics is part of Emerson’s award-winning Plantweb™ digital ecosystem of technologies, software and services.

Augmented reality for Plantweb Optics transforms the way field technicians accomplish complex tasks through enhanced situational awareness, live remote assistance and analytics delivered in context of the plant. As a field technician walks an industrial plant with a mobile device, Plantweb Optics uses spatial computing technology to map assets and provide technicians with critical maintenance information relevant to their location. Plantweb Optics overlays real-time analytics, equipment health status and technical support documentation on their field of view, so technicians can safely resolve issues sooner.

The augmented and virtual reality market is projected to grow annually at 40% from 2017 through 2025, according to multiple research reports. Much of this spending will come from manufacturers around the globe using AR technology to help upskill their workforce for digitalized operations.

With live remote assistance, field technicians can be virtually shadowed by experts, either on-site or off-site, from Emerson, their own company or another service provider. Experts can talk, type or augment the technician’s mobile display with graphics to guide the next action. Live remote assistance enables technicians and experts to collaborate for safe troubleshooting and repairs, regardless of location and without travel costs. Live remote assistance sessions, best practices and notes from experienced engineers and step-by-step troubleshooting procedures can be logged into a knowledge library for use by all engineers at a site. The knowledge library is a resource for companies to standardize procedures and ensure engineers of all experience levels understand an asset’s history and are using best practices for safe, efficient operations.

Preventative maintenance.

Sensors and systems to monitor plant and equipment.

Catastrophic failure on large rotating and structural machinery is arguably most commonly caused by mechanical component malfunction linked to unbalance, misalignment, and excessive wear causing fatigue as well as incorrect lubrication, seal failures, and sometimes improper use outside of the design specification of the machine. Where vibration and/or seismic monitoring with accelerometers is implemented as part of an optimised preventative maintenance schedule, early indications of these conditions can be detected and problems eliminated before serious failure occurs with the considerable benefit of reversing all of the negative outcomes of poor maintenance mentioned previously.

With its longstanding expertise in Metrix condition monitoring solutions, Ixthus Instrumentation can provide preventative maintenance assistance based on the manufacturers Digital Proximity System (DPS) and its other proximity and seismic sensor product lines. The Metrix DPS is a field-configurable PC-based measurement system for position, radial vibration and speed that comprises a digital proximity transducer, interfacing cable and a choice of signal conditioners that eliminate the need for multiple drivers and transmitters. Designed for harsh and hazardous environment use in areas such as oil refineries and gas plants, the ATEX certified and API 670 compliant eddy-current proximity measurement system works with both Metrix and other manufacturer’s sensor products as a digitally configurable proximity monitoring system.

Metrix’s seismic vibration instrumentation includes accelerometers, velocity sensors, transmitters and signal conditioners that combine for the measurement of structural vibration on components such as bearing housings, piping and machinery housings as well as machine support structures. Such systems are particularly suitable for machinery with rolling-element bearings which generally transmit both shaft-and bearing-related vibration to the outside of the machine where it can be detected by seismic measurements. The seismic instrumentation and DPS vibration systems combine to fully protect plant and equipment in preventative maintenance scenarios.

Remote valve service!

Remote Assistance service is supported by augmented reality to deliver secure and cost-effective real-time expert valve repair

Emerson has announced its new Remote Assistance service capability to help plant operators immediately respond to industrial valve issues by using augmented reality (AR) technology. The AR technology uses a robust, secure channel certified as ISO 27001-compliant. Valve repairs are advised and guided by Emerson experts as part of the company’s expanding Connected Services portfolio in its Plantweb™ digital ecosystem.

“Our customers are supporting critical infrastructure through the global health crisis that we’re experiencing, but they still encounter issues where they need outside help. We’re able to continue our promise of support while protecting essential on-site staff and Emerson technicians through the use of this technology,” said Clint Schneider, director of Emerson’s digital valve services.

Using a mobile device, plant personnel can securely share their field of view through the AR software as Emerson valve experts help troubleshoot and solve valve problems. Step-by-step instructions are overlaid in the field-user’s application to support installation, calibration or repair actions.

Valves play a key role in reducing variability and increasing reliability in production because they touch so many areas of operations. In any given process facility, there could be hundreds to thousands of valves in operation. Depending on the criticality and the application, the maintenance plans could vary from daily monitoring to less-frequent inspections and repairs. Ensuring valves meet operational standards requires detailed record-keeping and right-skilled talent to oversee the repair.

Real-time video communication enables users to resolve issues faster and minimise instruction errors that often occur with audio-only support while eliminating travel time and the cost of getting technicians to the work site. In addition, operators can expand their in-house knowledge base and staff skillsets through on-the-job troubleshooting guidance and recommendations to remediate issues, up to and including oversight of the final repair.

The Remote Assistance service is available for Emerson valve, actuator and regulator product portfolios – and in some instances can cover non-Emerson products, as some Emerson technicians have extensive backgrounds in repairing products from other manufacturers.

Plantweb leverages IIoT technologies, software and services to expand digital intelligence throughout a workforce, enhancing workflows and processes to provide personnel with the insights needed to accelerate performance improvement.

Reducing maintenance time for pH probes!

By using retractable probe housings, for example in pH measurement technology, the required regular maintenance of the sensors can be reduced and thus the manual labour for each measuring point can be minimised.

EXNER Process Equipment's retractable probe housings offer plant operators many advantages compared to traditional, fixed measuring points. When used correctly, they can significantly reduce the maintenance work at the measuring point in pH measurement technology, for example, extend the lifespan of the sensors used and increase the reliability and availability of the measurement value.

Here, the retractable probe housing separates the pH sensor from the active process fully automatically and moves it into a separated rinse chamber where the sensor is cleaned. This can be done with a pure water rinse as well as with the addition of cleaning agents. External controls regulate and monitor the whole process. Once the cleaning process is complete, the retractable probe housing moves back into the measurement position and returns the sensor to the process to continue the measurement. The retractable probe housing thus forms a lock between the pH sensor and the process medium to be measured.

Using this process, the lifespan of the sensors used can be extended above all in demanding and rough processes. The reliability of the measurement values can be increased, regular maintenance work reduced, and you can also ensure a more economical operation.

Easy-to-deploy monitoring accelerates asset digitalisation.

The AMS Asset Monitor edge analytics device just introduced by Emerson, digitalises essential asset data and analytics for better operations performance and improved decision-making. AMS Asset Monitor provides actionable insights into essential assets that were previously monitored only with infrequent assessments. The new edge analytics device will connect with Emerson’s Plantweb™ Optics asset performance platform to provide key operations personnel with instant asset health details for operations and maintenance decision-making.

Small form aids ease adding to existing assets
delivers continuous asset data & analytics
.
“Plants are always looking for more ways to improve profitability by increasing productivity. Just a percentage point or two in availability can equal millions of dollars per year or more,” said John Turner, product manager for online prediction, Emerson. “The AMS Asset Monitor enables personnel across the plant to see the current health of essential assets along with suggested actions to improve asset health. This allows them to make informed decisions to maintain reliability, increase uptime and maximise productivity.”

Plants typically monitor the condition of essential assets such as pumps, fans, and heat exchangers only every 30 to 60 days. The longer the gap, the more likely that a defect goes undetected and results in an unexpected failure with significant impact on production, product quality, and plant efficiency. The new AMS Asset Monitor combines easy deployment, embedded logic-based analytics, and intuitive health scoring to make it easier for organisations to monitor and maintain essential assets. For instance, AMS Asset Monitor’s analytics and visualisation can help plant personnel effectively plan maintenance during scheduled shutdowns and turnarounds, and reduce or eliminate unplanned downtime.

Unlike typical analytics devices that send data to a historian or the cloud to be processed later, AMS Asset Monitor provides analytics at the edge, performing calculations at the device. This device-centred analytics capability reduces the time, complication, and expense of adding analytics to a plant’s assets. Each device collects data continuously and uses embedded logic to identify and diagnose common reliability issues. Individual issues such as imbalance, misalignment, bearing faults, lubrication issues, or fouling are consolidated into an overall asset health score. AMS Asset Monitor then communicates these health scores via a web browser or – when integrated with Plantweb Optics – through real-time persona-based alerts on mobile devices. Plantweb Optics also enables enterprise-wide visibility and expands edge analytics and digital intelligence throughout the organisation, keeping personnel aware of essential asset health.

The AMS Asset Monitor’s small footprint, along with wired or wireless Ethernet connectivity, makes it simple to install. The edge device can support new applications by simply adding new logic-based analytics.

AMS Asset Monitor provides flexible, scalable reliability monitoring with edge analytics, enabling plants to more easily adopt predictive maintenance to avoid operations disruption and maximise production time.

Multifibre connector inspection.

Testing Twelve Fibers in Less than Twelve Seconds.

The first handheld tool for the automated inspection of each single fiber of MPO and other multifiber connectors has been introduced by Laser Comonents: the FiberChek Sidewinder by VIAVI Solutions.
A pass/fail analysis of a standard twelve fiber MPO connector can be conducted in less than twelve seconds. Instead of four hours, service technicians now only need 20 minutes to check one hundred MPO connections. There is also the option to apply tips and bulkheads for other connectors such as MTP or even single fiber connectors.

With features like auto-focus, auto-pan/scroll, and fiber end-face analysis, the FiberChek Sidewinder provides all the data required for certification according to IEC-61300-3-35 or specific customer requirements.

Thanks to an integrated touchscreen, on-board storage capabilities, and a battery lifetime of five hours, the Sidewinder is apt for completely autonomous operation. Its USB and WiFi connectivity allow for interaction with PCs or mobile devices.

Servicing & maintenance in hazardous areas!

The IS1+ Remote I/O System from R. Stahl enables preventive maintenance implementations in zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas, where servicing systems and components is particularly challenging and expensive.
Preventing severe malfunctions and downtime via advance notifications and timely intervention not only helps reduce regular operating costs, but also and especially reduces the risk of incalculable losses due to unscheduled shutdowns. This is achieved through innovative IS1+ features: notably, intelligent self-diagnostics ensure an early identification of errors, so users can be alerted before malfunctions lead to serious problems. Such alerts can be triggered up to 12 months prior to an expected failure. The Remote I/O System continuously monitors all internal components such as the redundant integrated BusRail as well as operating parameters and external conditions. The latter include, for instance, ambient temperature, thermal shock, the electrical load of the I/O modules, or on/off switching. Based on such data, a smart algorithm calculates the remaining lifespan of components.

User alerts comply with the widely accepted NAMUR NE107 standard on "self-monitoring and diagnosis of field devices". On the one hand, a blue LED on the I/O module is used to show "Maintenance" requirement on location. A diagnostic message is also passed on to control and asset management systems. The blue maintenance message with the defined symbol and an explanatory text appears in the IS1+ DTM. In addition to maintenance notifications, IS1+ intelligent diagnostic functions provide a range of other information. For instance, signal errors are reported via red LEDs for specific channels as well as via error telegrams. Moreover, for IS1+ for PROFIBUS DP in particular, application creation in the control system is facilitated through a signal status bit – much like the status byte for systems such as PROFIBUS PA, it serves to supplement 'good' or 'bad' (for example, in case of line errors) status information that is cyclically transmitted for each process value.

Planning a revamp? What problems do you anticipate?

Jonathan Wilkins, marketing director of European Automation, discusses the stages of hot cutover and alternative solutions to minimise downtime.

Let me set the scene. As a plant manager, you've set your sights on a full system upgrade. You've broken the news to the rest of the team and you’re pleasantly surprised to see they share your excitement. You might think their happiness is a result of having a brand new system, but in reality it might be the prospect of having a short holiday while the upgrade is completed.

With hot cutover there's no need for a full plant shutdown. Quality assurance machinery can continue to run and the lack of downtime means your customers won't be affected. Hot cutover may sound like the perfect solution, but don't be fooled into thinking it's a simple process.

Hot cutover planning
After making the decision to go for hot cutover upgrades, the first thing to do is plan the logistics.

Cutover logistics should consider the space requirements of the old and new equipment, since both will be in operation as the cutover is performed. Power, communications and other connections must also be part of this planning since operator stations and I/O cabinets may be moved during the process.

Cutover sequence planning looks at the order that units will be converted from the old system to the new. Generally, a back to front order is used, unless factory conditions dictate otherwise. A key consideration is the switchover of PLCs. It's important that time and quality isn't sacrificed as a result of human error, so ensure that operators know which PLCs are in operation.

Safety planning
The logistics of hot cutover isn't the only thing to consider prior to the switch; a safety review should also be conducted. All plant operators should complete the relevant safety training and be provided with the necessary equipment well in advance.

The earlier you recognise any potential risks, the better. By conducting an initial field survey, challenges can be identified and solutions can be engineered. The most successful solutions consider the associated risk, cost and potential schedule changes.

Too much to ask?
If you're unsure whether you have the time and capacity to conduct a full system upgrade, there is another option. Implementing obsolete replacement parts can make your system as good as new. Whilst hot cutover ensures your system stays up and running throughout the upgrade, working hours can be lost on training and shifting machinery. With a vast network of authorised suppliers, European Automation sources and delivers parts anywhere on the planet, in record time, meaning your workforce can continue doing what they do best.

If you are considering an upgrade to tackle energy efficiency standards such as the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and ISO50001, don’t exclude obsolete industrial automation spares as a solution. Cutting the monthly bills and reducing your carbon footprint doesn't have to mean a costly upgrade. Industries from aerospace to oil and gas are already reaping the efficiency benefits of Eco Obsolete Technology (EOT).

EOT is the name given to products that comply with energy efficiency regulations, even after they become obsolete. Many industries rely on obsolete components to keep them up and running. Today, more and more companies are turning to EOT for their efficiency needs.

Once you have the facts for each option, it's decision time. Either way if you do it right, your workforce won’t be in for a long weekend.
