Fully automatic cleaning control.

The range of functions of Exner Process Equipment's EXmatic 470 cleaning control for the automation of pH measuring points has been expanded.

One special feature of the system offered by this equipment is its openness, that means the cleaning control is not tied to a specific manufacturer of pH sensors or transmitters. Operation of the EXmatic 470 is also very easy for the user thanks to a clear menu structure and the use of a touch-sensitive color display. As an alternative to this, a wireless network connection together with a mobile device can also be used for the parameterisation.

In addition to the freely programmable cleaning cycles with up to three different media, a definable pause time and operating modes as well as a switchable sealing water function, the EXmatic 470 is now available with a so-called measuring time delay. This makes it possible to delay the signal output by the control until the measured value of the sensor in the process medium has stabilized. A "Measure" signal is only output after the set time has elapsed.

The EXmatic 470 is used in a wide variety of areas. For example in water and wastewater treatment, in the paper and sugar industry and in thermal power stations.

Automating measuring points safely and economically.

Through the combined use of an automatic cleaning control and a retractable probe housing, e.g. in pH measurement technology, the regularly required maintenance of the sensors can be reduced and thus the manual workload per measuring point minimised.

Compared to traditional, permanently installed measuring points, retractable probe housings offer the plant operator various advantages. Used correctly, benefits, for example in pH measurement technology, include a significant reduction in maintenance work on the measuring point, an extended lifespan of the sensors used and increased reliability and availability of the measurement value. At the same time, an efficient cleaning control is of essential importance to the safe and economical automation of the retractable probe housing.

With the new product EXmatic 470, Exner is bringing a successor to the established predecessor model EXmatic 460 onto the market. The new control impresses not just with the use of state-of-the-art technology. The construction as well as the available functions were also developed in a user-orientated manner. Thus, many technical features already known from the EXmatic 460 have been retained. These include the openness of the system, i.e. the control is not tied to a specific manufacturer of sensors or transmitters.

Simultaneously, operation has been simplified for the user with a clear menu structure and the use of a touch-sensitive colour display. Additionally, the new product type has even more flexibility in use. For instance, the EXmatic 470 control now allows up to three different media valves to be connected, meaning the user can make use of a larger selection of possible cleaning solutions e.g. in the event of stubborn soiling.

Reducing maintenance time for pH probes!

By using retractable probe housings, for example in pH measurement technology, the required regular maintenance of the sensors can be reduced and thus the manual labour for each measuring point can be minimised.

EXNER Process Equipment's retractable probe housings offer plant operators many advantages compared to traditional, fixed measuring points. When used correctly, they can significantly reduce the maintenance work at the measuring point in pH measurement technology, for example, extend the lifespan of the sensors used and increase the reliability and availability of the measurement value.

Here, the retractable probe housing separates the pH sensor from the active process fully automatically and moves it into a separated rinse chamber where the sensor is cleaned. This can be done with a pure water rinse as well as with the addition of cleaning agents. External controls regulate and monitor the whole process. Once the cleaning process is complete, the retractable probe housing moves back into the measurement position and returns the sensor to the process to continue the measurement. The retractable probe housing thus forms a lock between the pH sensor and the process medium to be measured.

Using this process, the lifespan of the sensors used can be extended above all in demanding and rough processes. The reliability of the measurement values can be increased, regular maintenance work reduced, and you can also ensure a more economical operation.

Fifteen years of fluid analysis!

What started 15 years ago with the takeover of a pure component production company has today developed into an extremely dynamic and innovative company in the field of fluid analysis.

The two founders of Exner Process Equipment, Michael Tottewitz and Detlef Exner, got to know each other through working together for their previous employer where they built up and developed a division for special designs over several years. They founded their company guided by the knowledge that it was easier to implement special designs and customised developments in clear, simple structures than in corporate structures.

The company, which was taken over at the start of its business operations, was principally a pure manufacturing operation for metal components. However, the existing business quickly became a high-performance construction and development division and was augmented by production of parts and equipment in the field of fluid analysis. In parallel with this, in-house products were developed in the aforementioned business. Over the years, the company abandoned contracts purely for producing individual components in order to be able to better focus on in-house products and manufacturing for OEM customers.

This year, the midsize company is celebrating its 15-year anniversary and is reflecting on a time full of change and innovations. Thanks to the courage and determination of the two founders to leave the beaten track and build up a simultaneously agile and process-orientated company, Exner has, over the last few years, developed into an international provider of high-quality probe housings for measuring pH values and optical sensors for determining cell growth and turbidity. The products manufactured are durable and offer the highest degree of variability meaning they can be configured to meet almost any requirements. Its customers primarily include companies from the chemical industry, the bio and food technology industry and the pharmaceutical industry.

When asked the two founders explain what makes Exner Process Equipment special, they agree: “Innovations with the user in mind and the willingness to constantly reinvent yourself as a company in order to react to the reality of the time – that’s what Exner amounts to. We’re proud of that and want to continue doing it in order to be a strong and reliable partner for our customers, suppliers and employees in the future.”

Measurement and monitoring of cell growth.

Exner’s new generation of the EXcell sensor series not only provides the end user with higher flexibility during application, but at the same time allows safer processing.

These sensors provide safe and reliable measurements in the fields of pharmaceutics and biotechnology. Their 12mm design makes them completely ideal not only for use in laboratory fermenters, but also in the later production process. The sensors allow the absorption of liquids to be determined reliably. The employed wavelength of the 850 nm LED light source also eliminates any colour influence. The sensors have thus proved their worth inter alia for the measurement of cell growth of yeast and mammal cells, concentration measurement of microorganisms such as bacteria and algae concentrations, establishment of the optimum time for feeding or cell harvesting as well as the monitoring of fermentation processes.

The launch of product categories EXcell 231 and EXcell 241 has immediately made available the new generation of the aforementioned sensor series. Updates of software and connections not only provide the end user with higher flexibility during applications, but at the same time make processing safer.

The new plug is equipped with a standard cover flap to protect the electrical contacts in autoclaving processes. Thanks to the revamp of the connections, the sensors can be implemented in a more compact way. Software innovations provide the user with more adjustment options when using the Modbus interface as well as new features when applying the EXNER ECI-03 communications interface.

Reliable turbidity measurement.

In its EXspect 271 backscattering sensor, Exner is launching a compact measuring device for reliable and economical turbidity measurement. One major benefit of the new sensor is in the spherical design of its optical measurement system. This minimises the attachment of air bubbles and the build-up of deposits.

The focussing of the beam due to the sapphire lens allows for a measurement right on the barrier layer of the medium, meaning only the reflection is measured, and not the proportion of the light beam absorbed. Both the attachment of all kinds of things to the measurement system and the measurement of absorbed proportions are drawbacks on the current market.

The measurement takes place in the near-infrared region (NIR) at a wavelength of 880 nm, which allows for colour-neutral measurement. The LED light source being used guarantees a long-lasting and stable signal. The stainless-steel case of the EXspect 271 has a hygienic design and is suitable for CIP/SIP. As another special feature, NIST-traceable reference standards can be obtained for calibrating or checking the sensors in the field.

Due to its hygienic and robust design, the EXspect 271 sensor is suitable not only for many applications in the food and drinks industries, but also for diverse applications in the processing industry. This includes, for example, yeast recovery, phase separation, purification processes in dairy plants, and the measurement of cellulose concentrations.
