Angled launch connectors.

Full production quantity availability of Samtec's new 1.85 mm 30-degree angled launch board connector (185-AL Series) has been announced. This series delivers precision RF performance through 67 GHz while solving common mechanical and routing challenges found in dense, millimeter wave lab test and evaluation environments.

Modern RF and high-speed digital test boards often face tight mechanical constraints that make cable routing difficult or unreliable. The 30-degree angled launch geometry of the Samtec 185-AL Series allows coaxial cables to exit the PCB in a natural direction, significantly reducing sharp bends that can degrade electrical stability.

The solderless, compression mount design enables field replaceable functionality. Eliminating the need for solder reflow enables rapid connect/disconnect to the printed circuit board, significantly reducing downtime and allowing connector reuse. It also removes performance variability that can occur with solder, enabling repeatable precision millimeter wave performance.

Threaded coupling provides high mechanical reliability. Mating interconnects include Samtec’s high-performance microwave cable assemblies, such as .047” diameter RF047-A Series cable, .086” diameter RF086 Series cable, and stable during flexure Nitrowave® LL071 Series cable. Mechanical stress when bending or twisting can change the dielectric’s properties and alter performance, with effects more pronounced at higher frequencies. Nitrowave cable’s optimised cable construction, which includes a Dynamic Performance Layer, protects from measurement errors that can occur due to flexure.

At millimeter wave frequencies, connector launches become increasingly complex. Research facility in venerable university.

Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca – also known as UBB – is the oldest university in Romania, reaching back to 1581, and standing as one of the pinnacle institutions of Romanian academia. This is due to both its centuries-old heritage and its constant focus on future areas of study, research, and innovation. Recently, the Faculty of Engineering in Reșița, a branch of UBB, was able to access a program funded by the West Regional Development Agency to equip the research laboratory with a Mitutoyo coordinate measuring machine, with the aim of training students' skills.

UBB houses 50,000 students and features a distinctive multicultural profile in the European university landscape. The university has three major lines of study: the Romanian line of study, the Hungarian line of study, and the German line of study, offering also other languages for instruction, such as French, English, etc.

Although UBB took over the responsibility for the Faculty of Engineering in 2020, the academic history of Reșița goes back even further. The first technical students began their studies here in 1971. At that time, Reșița's rapidly developing industry needed engineers, and they filled this need.

As an integral part of UBB Cluj-Napoca, the Faculty of Engineering aims to provide initial and continuing professional training through bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs, as well as specialization/advanced training courses in fields relevant to the regional needs. Another component of the Faculty of Engineering's mission is to support the business and public institutional environments through applied research on relevant topics to this region. The high number of engineers from Reșița recruited to research and production teams in the country and abroad, is a testament to the high quality professional training provided by the University.

“The Faculty of Engineering has – and has had over the years – teaching staff with rich experience in the industrial environment, who bring added value to teaching and research activities. The major fields of study addressed are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and applied computer science. In addition to coursework, our students also carry out activities within student circles, develop their own research (at their level), and manage to participate in many national competitions on technical topics," said Prof. Univ. Dr. Ing. Gilbert-Rainer Gillich, the dean of the Faculty of Engineering (right).

To ensure students the best mix of academic education and practical experience, the Faculty of Engineering decided to invest in high-performance technological equipment. Thus, through a program financed by the West Regional Development Agency, the educational institution managed to access the necessary funds to equip its own research laboratory with a Mitutoyo MiSTAR 555 coordinate measuring machine (CMM).

MiSTAR 555 is a 3D CNC coordinate measuring machine, which is highly reliable because of real-time temperature compensation technology that guarantees accuracy over a wide temperature range.

Commenting on the new Mitutoyo measuring machine purchase, Prof. Gillich said: “We wanted this machine because it is a high-performance piece of equipment, and with the educational software packages provided, we can train students, provide them with skills and competencies that are required by private company in the region. We were fortunate enough to receive a good offer from Mitutoyo, which led to our purchase of a top-notch machine.”

Relying on decades of experience, Mitutoyo equipment is precise, reliable, and robust, a prerequisite when these machines are used frequently by students. In addition, Mitutoyo offers educational software packages with 20 licenses, high-quality training, and technical support. The software is easy to use, intuitive, and provides detailed reports, which is another critical request for both teaching staff and researchers.

"MiSTAR 555 is used in numerous laboratory experiments across several disciplines. We manage to create applications very close to industrial ones, in the sense that measurements are taken on parts received from industry partners, new parts, or parts with a certain degree of wear. The dimensions that this machine can accommodate are 500x500x500 mm, and the accuracy is 2.2 microns," Prof. Gilbert-Rainer Gillich said.

Components manufactured today are more complex than ever, with a greater diversity of parts and tighter tolerances than ever before. This necessitates the enhancement of quality control and other metrological processes in the manufacturing process.

“The machine uses MCosmos software for dimensional measurements, and with the Geopak, CAT1000, and Scanpak component modules, you can perform precise measurements by touch scanning or point measurements for parts across the industry.”

At an advanced level of research, for both master's and doctoral students, a high-tech solution like this was the best choice for keeping up with future engineering and technological concepts. Now, with the help of Mitutoyo Romania, this was possible.

Next generation weather durability testing.

Atlas has officially launched the next-generation Ci3000 Weather-Ometer®, featuring nearly double the sample capacity, enhanced irradiance and temperature uniformity, a redesigned NextGen Ci user interface, and a sleek new exterior finish with integrated chamber lighting – all engineered to deliver more consistent and efficient testing across global labs. The upgraded system streamlines test setup, method selection, and day-to-day operation while building on the performance that has made the Ci-Series a trusted tool for plastics, coatings, and automotive OEMs.

A benchmark instrument for accelerated weathering and lightfastness testing, the Ci3000 is the most compact and cost-effective rotating-rack xenon arc unit in Atlas’s Weather-Ometer lineup (alongside their Ci4400 and Ci5000). It reproduces years of outdoor exposure in weeks through controlled cycles of xenon light, heat, moisture, and spray.

These updates expand the instrument’s testing capabilities and improve reproducibility.

Automated environmental stability.

Mini lab with big performance.

Quick and easy colour detection.

The EasyPlus UV/VIS measuring device from Mettler Toledo represents a significant opportunity for the industry, offering uncomplicated, space-saving, and cost-effective colour analysis of food and beverages. The device is straightforward to use and comes with 30 pre-installed colour scales. Its DIN A4 sheet size makes it an ideal analysis instrument for quick, compliant results. The compact and versatile EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer recently proved its strengths in colour analysis during the formulation of a new soy sauce. The developers of an international food producer used the special advantages of the flexible EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer for this purpose. With the device, they added a local and quickly deployable analysis unit to their always busy central laboratory, which enabled the team to carry out precise absorption and CIELab measurements in 3.5-millimeter quartz cuvettes directly in the department. The small size and high performance of the flexible small laboratory were so convincing that a second device was ordered immediately.

Little power pack.
The reasons could be highlighted in colour: The EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer simplifies the colour control of liquid foodstuffs in accordance with regulations — quickly, conveniently, and inexpensively. With 30 pre-stored colour indices and reference values, the device immediately shows whether a sample meets the defined quality standards. With the additional EasyDirect™ UV/VIS software, the device can also convert a measurement into two additional colour scales, which significantly reduces the analysis effort. The robust lamp also requires no warm-up time.

Convenient use.
The minilab is also extremely easy to operate and takes the strain off staff: The EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer guides the user step by step through the entire testing process via a touchscreen display. Neither installation nor on-site training is required. To get started with colour analysis, Mettler Toledo provides informational material for download and video tutorials.

As soon as the lid of the measuring device is closed, the analysis starts automatically. The integrated PathDetect™ function automatically recognises which of the up to seven possible cell sizes or path lengths is being measured, thereby reducing application errors.

In addition to the colour analysis of numerous substances, the all-rounder is also suitable for spectrophotometric tasks and water tests. This makes the analysis unit a trump card for small and medium-sized companies, giving specialist departments flexibility and independence from central and external laboratories.

Arbitrary Waveform Generators with Ethernet control.

Spectrum Instrumentation has introduced four new Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWGs) in its DN2.63x NETBOX series, delivering output rates up to 10 GS/s with 16-bit resolution. With easy control via Ethernet, these high-speed instruments connect directly to PCs, laptops or even the company network. Designed for automated and remote testing, they are ideal for wideband signal generation from DC to 2.5 GHz.

The compact and lightweight AWGs just use a standard Ethernet/LXI cable to connect to any PC or network. High-resolution 16-bit DAC technology delivers waveforms with excellent purity and low-noise, making these AWGs ideal for use in stimulus-response or closed-loop type testing situations. Each AWG channel features its own DAC and can be used in single-ended or differential output modes with fully programmable output ranges. In single-ended mode, waveform amplitudes go up to ±500 mV into 50Ω, in differential mode they go up to ±1 V into 100Ω. With high impedance termination, the output levels are doubled, offering up to ±2 V.

Available in single- or dual-channel configurations, the DN2.63x models include 2 GSamples (4 GB) of standard memory, expandable to 8 GSamples (16 GB). This enables long waveform playback - up to 800 ms at 10 GS/s - without interruption. Users can select between several smart trigger functions and generation modes, including single-shot, repeated, multiple replay and FIFO streaming. The FIFO mode enables new data to be uploaded to the AWG while replaying a stored waveform.

Each unit comes with Spectrum’s SBench 6 software for waveform creation, control, and analysis. Customers can define waveforms from equations, use the built-in function generator, or import data from digitizers, oscilloscopes, or simulation tools. For custom development, SDKs are included for C++, Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and more.

Integration into automated systems is seamless with front panel connectors for external clock and trigger signals, as well as multi-purpose I/O lines serving as marker outputs, for status flags, or synchronous/asynchronous signaling. A digital pulse generator option is also available. Weighing under 7 kg and with optional rack-mount kits, these units are ideal for mobile, benchtop and rack-based setups.

Optical network testing.

The release of the AQ7290 Series optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) has been announced by Yokogawa. This is a highly reliable and accurate optical fiber field test instrument that will ease the construction and maintenance of rapidly expanding optical communication networks. The AQ7290 is equipped with new functions that improve operability and workability. Six standard and high-performance models are available in the AQ7290 Series, offering a selection of two or three wavelengths to cover a broad range of fibre-optic installation and maintenance measurement needs.

Positioned as the flagship model in the company’s OTDR lineup, the AQ7290 Series has been developed to improve reliability and ease-of-use during the installation and maintenance of optical fiber networks. Applications will include optical fibre installation and maintenance, such as long-distance fibres that serve as the metro/core network between buildings and cities.

Regarding OTDR functionality, Yokogawa has improved the dynamic range, enabling measurement over a longer distance than ever before. A dynamic range improvement of up to 2 decibels over the previous-generation AQ7280 Series is now available for all six models in the AQ7290 Series.
Also new is support for high-reflection real-time measurement, in which the quality of the displayed waveform is emphasized, and updates are made while displaying the waveform with high accuracy. This makes it possible to measure the far end of long-distance routes and multi-branch splitters, which were not visible with conventional real-time measurement.

3. Remote operation with expanded connectivity
Connectivity has also been improved with the AQ7290 Series. By attaching a wireless LAN adapter, technicians can operate and communicate with the OTDR from the office or home via an external terminal. The AQ7290 is also compatible with LTE USB dongles, allowing remote control even without a Wi-Fi router.

Temperature data loggers in laboratory.

Cansford Laboratories, working within the family legal sector, carries out drug and alcohol testing for workplaces, governments, and individuals. Samples of hair, nails, oral fluid, and dried blood spots are stored in refrigerators throughout different processes of analysis and quality control. Temperature must be monitored to ensure that it remains within the set acceptance criteria to comply with the company’s Quality Management System and laboratory standard ISO 17025:2017.

The Tinytag Plus 2 data loggers with built-in temperature sensors are used ensure compliance with the specific storage temperatures required and Cansford Laboratories’ internal standard operating procedure (SOP). In addition to their use in storage facilities, Tinytags are used to monitor ambient room temperatures, especially that of the laboratory, as the equipment produces a significant amount of heat while running. The data gathered also provides the opportunity to examine and validate the performance of air conditioning systems and how well they maintain constant temperatures.

New dosing system.

DataPhysics Instruments and the start-up droptical from Nuremberg *D) are bringing the FlexDrop dosing system to market. The FlexDrop dosing system is compatible with all contact angle meters of the OCA series and can dose tiny drops in the picolitre and nanolitre range. The two companies are thus setting new standards for contact angle and 1-click surface energy measurements, especially on very small surface areas.

The start-up droptical, which develops drop dispensers and camera technology in miniature format, and the measuring device manufacturer DataPhysics Instruments are jointly setting new standards in liquid dispensing for surface science applications. With the FlexDrop, an innovative dosing system has been developed for the contact angle meters of the OCA series from DataPhysics, which can dispense particularly tiny drops on smallest surface areas.

The contact angle measuring devices in the OCA series are high-precision systems for characterising interfaces and surfaces. They combine high-quality optics, pinpoint dosing, and precise sample positioning to create high-performance, reliable measuring systems. The FlexDrop dosing system expands the possibilities of liquid dosing for contact angle and surface energy measurements.

Measurement on the smallest surface areas possible.
The innovative piezo dosing technology of the FlexDrop dosing system and its precise drop control make it possible to position drops on smallest surface areas. The FlexDrop dosing system can reproducibly dispense drops with minimal volumes, in the picolitre and nanolitre range, and with pinpoint accuracy. For the first time, users can carry out measurements on two drops which have a distance of just two millimetres, without having to reposition the dosing unit. Such close positioning of droplets was not possible with previous dosing systems as a one-click measurement. This way, the smallest surface areas can be analysed quickly and precisely – on electronic components as well as on curved or structured surfaces.

The simultaneous dosing of two drops with minimal spacing is particularly advantageous for determining the surface energy of solid surfaces, for which at least two test liquids are required. With contact angle meters from the OCA series, equipped with a FlexDrop dosing system, it is possible to measure the surface energy with just one click.

Outstanding user-friendliness: easy cleaning and quick cartridge change.
The small droplet size makes cleaning the sample particularly easy, as the droplets evaporate from the surface. This is a particular advantage if the measurement is part of the quality control of components, which are subsequently used further.

The FlexDrop dosing system is equipped with interchangeable cartridges for the test liquids. Users can change the cartridges in a few simple steps; cleaning is not necessary. The use of individual cartridges for different liquids also eliminates the risk of cross-contamination.

    With FlexDrop, droptical and DataPhysics Instruments have realised the first joint product ready for series production. “During development, the focus was on ensuring that the dosed drop volumes can be generated reproducibly. Embracing LIMS.

A new case study released by Autoscribe Informatics (A Xybion Company) highlights how CIA Labs has streamlined their approval process, reduced the burden of paperwork, and improved their overall turn-around times by adopting Autoscribe’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Based in Saint Joseph, (MI USA) Custom Industrial Analysis Labs (CIA Labs) has been in operation for over 30 years serving the pharmaceutical, food and agribusiness industries, as well as testing for various industrial and chemical clients. CIA Labs is a full-service contract chemical analytical laboratory offering a wide spectrum of analytical and consulting activities for clients across the USA and globally. Prior to adopting a LIMS, paper was used to manage each sample and its associated data, from registering the sample at reception to capturing the analytical results and calculations in the laboratory, including the manual creation of certificates of analysis (CofAs). Over the years the volume, complexity and variety of the testing performed has grown dramatically, to the extent that paper processes were becoming a significant bottleneck for the business.

The main benefit of Autoscribe’s LIMS has been to help eliminate these bottlenecks, by removing the need to pass paperwork between the various departments and automating the creation of reports and Certificates of Analysis (CofAs) for clients. Previously, as an FDA lab, all the manual paperwork had to be checked and double checked by hand to guard against errors. Analytical results are now captured in the laboratory and checked online by the QA team. CofAs are automatically created once the checks and approvals have been completed. As a result, the total turnaround time from samples arriving to results being released to the customer has dramatically reduced.

RF edge launch connectors.

Samtec has released a new line of RF edge launch connectors with a narrow body design that is 33% smaller than traditional edge launch connectors. These connectors are commonly used in a lab setting for high-frequency test and measurement applications, high-speed digital component test and evaluation boards. Frequency capabilities are DC to 67 GHz (185-EL Series), DC to 50 GHz (240-EL Series) and DC to 40 GHz (292-EL Series). Interface types include 1.85 mm, 2.40 mm and 2.92 mm.

As the name suggests, Samtec’s RF edge launch connectors are installed on the edge of the board. Doing so makes it easy to align the launch pin with the circuit trace, which also helps to ensure proper ground alignment for preventing RF leakage. Samtec’s RF edge launch connectors compression mount to the printed circuit board instead of requiring solder. Proper alignment and the removal of solder allows for increased signal integrity performance capabilities (versus soldered edge launch, or even vertical or angled launch connectors).

The solderless design of the 185-EL, 240-EL and 292-EL Series connectors means they are reusable, also known as field replaceable; with up to 500 mating cycles, this makes them extremely cost-effective. Samtec’s RF edge launch connectors are easy to install and do not cause damage to a printed circuit board.
