Excellence in Automation in Ireland recognised!

The Ireland ISA Section, which is a voluntary organisation with a membership of over 220, received its charter in 1978. Its purpose is to bring together all personnel involved in the instrumentation and related disciplines in order to enhance their capabilities in instrumentation design, manufacture and use.

This year the 35th annual Honours and Awards Ceremony was held in the hallowed halls of University College Cork. This annual ceremony to acknowledge and encourage excellence for those training for careers in Instrumentation, Control and Automation.
This year six awards were presented, three of which have been submitted by Third Level institutions and three industry awards.

The presence of sponsors clearly showed both the industry’s awareness and its support for promoting and awarding excellence in automation. (see list at bottom). Here are some pictures of the event of varying quality.

Awardees:
Chris Ryan
Craft Person Award: Chris Ryan has completed his apprenticeship as an Instrumentation craftsperson. He has achieved all credits in every subject for phase 2,4,6. Chris is an excellent student. He was nominated for this award by Pat Mc Carthy & Jim Doyle of the Cork Educational and Training Board.
Chris has also completed a number of in-house and external training courses. Chris served his apprenticeship with Lotus Works and has worked on several major projects in the Dublin, Galway & Limerick areas.

Colm Prendergast
Degree Award: Colm Prendergast has been an outstanding student on the degree course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
This project demonstrates the automation of a grain dryer using a programmable logical controller (PLC) and creating a control interface for it using a human machine interface (HMI) for the Strawchip Ltd agribusiness based in Athy, County Kildare.
Dr. Mick Mc Keever, lecturer at the DIT had no hesitation in nominating Brian for this award.

Brian Martin
Honours Degree Award: Brian Martin, B.Sc. (Hons.) in Physics with Astronomy, worked on developing a test platform to characterise and test finger ejection systems in optical sorting devices. Ejection systems remove unwanted products from production lines at high speed and with a high degree of accuracy. As such, the components used within ejection systems must operate in a fast, efficient, accurate and predictable manner. The project was conducted in collaboration with an industrial partner, Tomra Sorting Solutions – Food based in Citywest in Dublin, and they were delighted with the project work and outcomes.
Professor Enda Enda McGlynn commented that this was an exceptional project and that Brian was a worthy recipient for the award.

Thomas Butler
PHD Award: Dr. Thomas Butler has recently graduated with a PhD in Applied Physics from Cork Institute of Technology. His thesis title was “Real-Time Characterisation of Dynamic Laser Fields”.
Many modern technologies rely on laser devices ranging, for example, from high speed communication networks to medical imaging systems. A detailed examination and understanding of the fundamental operating dynamics of these laser devices is crucial in ensuring not only the quality and effectiveness of the devices in their current applications but in also providing insight into the future development of next generation photonic devices.
Dr. Guillaume Huyet of the Physical Sciences Department at the Cork Institute of Technology recommended Dr Butler for this award.

Pioneer Award: This is one of the earliest awards given by the section since 1984. It is awarded, on the nomination of two or more Society members, in recognition of a lifetime devoted to Instrumentation / Automation in Ireland.
John Lotty
This year, members Mr. Bob Shine, himself a recipient some years ago and Mr. Declan Lordan, nominated Mr. John Lotty, through his dedicated support of the ISA Ireland Section has worked for over 35 years promoting the development and growth of Instrumentation and Control in Ireland. John is a Senior Life Member of ISA, and during his extensive career was a member of the Institute of Engineers of Ireland, the Marketing Institute of Ireland, the Institute of Public Relations and a member of the Professional Journalists Institute in Ireland. He career includes stints in the British Royal Force and then in Pfizer's plant in Cork. He was then with Marathon (now Kinsale Energy) for over thirty four years retiring earlier this year.
In 1992 – 1994 John served as Section President, uniquely the only person to serve two consecutive terms. During his terms he brought a new professionalism to the Section this resulted in a significant membership increase. His PR abilities secured high profile of the Section across the media in Ireland.
He has continued to support our annual Honours and Awards with special attention on the Honour’s Degree Award as the annual €1,000 Busary is given in memory of Ger Dullea the section president prior to John, who tragically lost his life in 1993.
He was been recognised internationally by the Society with the Distinguished Society Service Award in 2006.

Innovation Project Award: This awards recognises a project which has made a significant contribution to the advancement of industry in Ireland through the use of Automation Technology.
The JJCV Team, Aidan Jordan is second from right.
Aidan Jordan was nominated by Declan Fagan of Vision Care Ireland, Limerick. For development on the JJCV Compare tool, a software application developed by Vision Care Ireland to perform multiple compare and review functions on multiple control system platforms. Siemens/CTI APT and Allen Bradley RSLogix Studio 5000 make up the majority of control system platforms at Vision Care Ireland.
Savings in excess of €200,000 have already been realised by the company this year as a result of the introduction of this tool.

Communication securely to IoT Clouds.

A secure IoT cloud data application can now be easily implemented with  Softing’s dataFEED OPC Suite. The new MQTT Connector enables the integration of automation devices via MQTT Publisher functionality in IoT cloud applications, e.g. IBM Bluemix Cloud. Highest security during transmission is guaranteed through the encryption of the data using SSL/TLS.

“A key issue for the successful implementation of Industrie 4.0 is the provision and analysis of production data. For system builders, operators and IT administrators, the crucial question is how and where to store and analyze large amounts of data safely and cost-effectively. Enabling PCs communicate with fibre-optics.

HMS Industrial Networks has expanded the IXXAT INpact multi-protocol card series with a PCIe mini variant for PROFINET IRT Fibre Optic.

Designed for secure data transmission in harsh environments
The IXXAT INpact enables easy implementation of a PROFINET IRT Fiber Optic Slave interface and can be used in compact industrial PCs as well as in mobile devices. Typical use cases are coupling of subsystems with superordinate networks, visualization of process data on human machine interfaces (HMIs) as well as data acquisition in PC-based process devices. IXXAT INpact is fully compliant with the requirements of the AIDA (Automation initiative of German automobile manufacturers) for a PROFINET interface.

PROFINET IRT via fiber optic meets the highest requirements for interference immunity and data transmission. It is often used in critical areas in the automotive field, e.g. in robotic cells for car body construction, in automated welding systems and other areas with high electromagnetic interferences.

Hardware concept of the IXXAT INpact multi-protocol card series
The new PROFINET IRT Fiber Optic card is the newest member of the IXXAT INpact series which supports a variety of Industrial Ethernet and fieldbus protocols, such as PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Powerlink, Modbus-TCP and PROFIBUS. The multi-network capability of INpact is based on the proven Anybus CompactCom technology from HMS – used within millions of devices globally.

The FPGA-based Anybus NP40 network processor includes all functions required to handle the communication between the Industrial Ethernet or fieldbus network and the PC-based customer application. The FPGA has a low latency and a deterministic real-time behavior, making it ideal for demanding industrial applications. The PROFINET IRT FO connection is made via SC-RJ connectors. Other network standards are supported by corresponding Sub-D9 or RJ45 Ethernet interfaces.

The IXXAT INpact is offered as a dedicated version for each network with pre-installed network protocol. Furthermore, INpact is also available as a Common Ethernet version, a highly flexible and open version in which the desired industrial Ethernet protocol can be flashed by the user.

Connection to the customer application
The IXXAT INpact is supplied with a comprehensive driver package for Windows and Linux, which allows a fast and easy development of customer-specific applications, regardless of the used card type or protocol. Thanks to a universal programming interface, users can change between INpact cards and protocols without changing the customer software, which leads to increased flexibility and a significant reduction of the development costs. Support for real-time operating systems such as RTX, Intime, VxWorks and QNX is available on request.

Wireless Sensor Connection.

The new WIS 2 (Wireless Inductive System 2) is an ideal way for Pepperl+Fuchs to round off its portfolio for the wireless connection of sensors to moving machine parts with a higher-performance system, according to a statement.

The WIS 2 is used both for signal transmission and for supplying power to the sensors connected to the secondary side, making wear-prone trailing cables and slip rings redundant. The WIS 2 supports ratings of up to 12 W over transmission distances of 0...7 mm compared to the WIS 1 with a maximum of 1.5 W and 0...5 mm, which has been available for years. In addition to the 8-channel design, a streamlined 2-channel variant is now also available for small applications with up to two sensors.

All system variants use a primary and a secondary transmitter, either for two or for eight channels. They come in size M30 in a cylindrical design and fitted with 30 cm cables and M12 connectors as standard. Since the transmitters are not paired, the secondary transmitters are freely interchangeable. As a result, for example, any number of different tool carriers can easily communicate via the same system. Inductive, capacitive, optical or ultrasound models with binary switching output and standard 3-wire connection technology are suitable as sensors. Whereas the 2-channel system uses a space-saving Y-splitter, the 8-channel system has an 8-way connector box with an IP67 degree of protection that can be installed up to 20 m away from the transmitter. Pepperl+Fuchs provides a wide selection of cable lengths and connectors for every application.

The WIS 2 has numerous potential applications in rotary tables, presses and change tools, for object detection on workpiece carriers, on rotation tools, robot gripper arms and all similar devices.

Checking monoblock containers.

Fluke® Process Instruments has developed a miniature monitoring solution for monoblock cure processes. The DATAPAQ MonoPaq2 system profiles the metal temperature of coated aluminum bottles, aerosols, and collapsible tubes both in IBO and OBO lines. The thermal barrier measures merely 41 x 48 x 195 mm, making it 43% smaller by volume than the preceding generation. The temperature profiling system can be used in lines with very closely spaced pins (>45 mm) and with various product basket sizes.

This engineering success is primarily based on the development of a new data logger with a minimal footprint. The new DATAPAQ Q18 logger connects four thermocouples via micro-miniature sockets and logs up to 32,000 readings per channel with an adjustable interval of 0.05 s or more. Its accuracy of ±0.5 °C puts it squarely in the class of the best available loggers.

Downloaded to a PC or notebook, the thermal profile can be reviewed with the DATAPAQ Insight software, which includes versatile visualisation, analysis, and reporting functions. Manufacturers can thereby optimize their oven settings and ensure that every product experiences the specified time at temperature. Regular monitoring is facilitated by the compact size and light weight of the system. Mounting brackets are available in different versions for quick and secure attachment in any line layout.

Light speed for hazardous areas.

In introducing their series 9721 unmanaged switches with ATEX and IECEx certifications, R. Stahl is presenting a networking product geared towards process plants with fast Ethernet infrastructure in hazardous areas.

Series 9721 switches feature four FX ports for optical fibre cables with 'op is' (inherently safe optical radiation) type of protection according to IEC EN 60079-28:2015, which is akin to electrical type 'i' intrinsic safety. Connected lines can be plugged in and out even in explosive atmospheres in zone 1 and 2 (hot plugging). With a shutdown no longer required, changes or extensions to an installation become more cost-effective. Optical fibre cables are the best and most reliable solution for fast data communication especially in plants with distributed systems, where considerable distances must be bridged or where strong interference may be an issue.

The switches themselves can be operated in zone 2, while their fast 100 Mbit/s optical ports connect field devices such as the Ethernet-enabled R. STAHL IS1+ remote I/O system in zone 1.

Depending on requirements, switch types are available for the connection of multi-mode lines that are up to 5 km long, or single-mode fibres up to 30 km long. There is also a mixed solution: one switch type provides one single-mode port to bridge a great distance, while three other devices can be locally connected more cost-efficiently via multi-mode cables. In addition, two electric TX ports with RJ45 jacks are available for connections in non-hazardous areas.

The unmanaged switch type 9721/13-42-x4 can withstand ambient temperatures in a wide range from -30 °C to +70 °C and tolerate the otherwise harsh conditions associated with such extremes. Redundant connection of 24 VDC auxiliary power supply is possible to increase the availability. In addition to IS1+ using Industrial Ethernet protocols such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP, the switches are suitable for HMI devices from R. STAHL HMI Systems and IP cameras from R. STAHL Camera Systems, and obviously also for a diverse range of other field devices requiring type "op is" explosion-protected Ethernet connectivity via optical fibres.

Cloud for field devices.

Connectors - waterproof when not connected!

The Binder 620 and 720 sub-miniature and miniature all-plastic snap-in modular connectors are available from Foremost Electronics. The lightweight and compact NCC (non-connected closed) design features internal seals that provide protection to IP67 with excellent electrical characteristics.

Snap-on pre-printed wire markers.

TE Connectivity has highlighted its market-leading STD and STB snap-on pre-printed markers for wire and cable identification.

The markers are ideally suited for projects in energy, such as power stations, oil refineries and offshore platforms, where maintenance technicians will need to identify individual wires and cables quickly and efficiently over the operating life of assets.

STD and STB markers are individual snap on markers that can be applied after termination or installation to identify wires and small cables permanently. STD markers are white and yellow with a black legend, whereas STB markers are color coded and a UV stabilized version is available in black with a white legend. Both are available in a range of ten sizes that expand to accommodate a full range of wire and small cables from 1.0 mm to 19 mm in diameter (0.04 to 0.75 inches).

They are applied using a dedicated applicator wand, which enables easy installation and prevents over-expansion of the markers. Once installed, the markers have a secure grip and feature chevron cut-outs on the sides to ensure the legend remains aligned and easy to read.

Both STD and STB markers are manufactured using a zero halogen polyoxymethylene (POM) compound, which is highly elastic to avoid damage to wire and cable insulation. POM guarantees strength, stability and low moisture absorption. It also has good resistance to chemicals, including key fluids found in energy, oil and gas, aviation and military installations. In terms of their flammability performance, STD and STB markers meet the US standard UL94 HB for plastic materials. Together these characteristics make them suitable to installations where a permanent cable identification solution is required.

PLC series covers most automation applications.

The Delta AS300 series Compact Non-backplane Mid-range PLC is a high performance multi-purpose controller designed for all kinds of automated equipment. Fault monitoring alarm system.

Mantracourt has launched a significant upgrade to its Load Cell Integrity Box and Fault Monitoring Alarm – the LCI. This innovative product has been designed to continuously monitor the condition of individual load cells and activates an alarm when faults in the system detected. The latest version now supports both 5V and 10V operation, the main advantage of which is that the new 5V operation requires less power consumption from the connected instruments and simplifies barrier selection.

The LCI is ideal for multi-load installations such as silos, tanks and other systems where the failure of an individual load cell can have serious consequences. Its fault monitoring capabilities provide an assured working system by continuous sampling of load cell channels, with an alarm being activated if any failure conditions are detected. PCB & control unit assembler improves manufacturing systems.

A customer of Aegis Software since 2008 they have used V7 NPI tools incorporating iView and iTrac. This year they introduced  FactoryLogix R3 into their Veenendaal (NL) facility. FLx R3 contains a significant number of enhancements and features in addition to the new logistics module to improve the entirety of manufacturing operations — from Material Incoming Quality Control and Sampling, Material Receiving and Labelling, Automated and Manual Warehouse Management, Material Kitting and Dispatch, Production Planning and Scheduling, Mobile Material Management through to Comprehensive Programmers Interface (API).

Paper call on air quality and industrial emissions.

AQE 2017, the international Air Quality and Emissions conference (Telford, UK, 24th & 25th May) has issued a call for Papers on emissions monitoring and ambient air quality monitoring.

Organiser Marcus Pattison says: “Air quality and its effects on both human health and climate change has been a politically hot topic for good reason lately, so AQE 2017 will provide a great opportunity for experts to share knowledge and learn about the latest developments.”

Anyone interested in presenting a Paper or a Poster should submit an abstract of up to 100 words via the website  by 20th January 2017.

The main themes of the conference will include international regulations, monitoring methods, technologies and standards relating to ambient air quality and industrial emissions. The industry sectors covered by the conference will include power, incineration, manufacturing and waste, as well as processes regulated by local authorities. The presentations will cover the monitoring of particulates and the main gas species including acid gases, ammonia, formaldehyde and trace species such as mercury.

The Conference will run alongside an Exhibition featuring almost all of the world’s leading suppliers of stack emissions and ambient monitoring equipment and services, including workplace, fugitive and discontinuous monitoring.

Energy award for Irish PSU manufacturer.

Rotation speed monitor enhanced.

The SC-System's family of signal conditioners by Pepperl+Fuchs can now be used even more comprehensively: the single rotation speed monitor with just a 6 mm installation width processes digital input signals of all binary sensors currently on the market and is now fitted with a restart inhibit. This feature enables the module to have to be activated via a reset input after limit values have been exceeded for a short period of time so that possible faults are found and rectified before restarting.

The design of the rotation speed monitor meets the philosophy that all signals of a signal type currently on the market may be processed with just one module. Signals from NAMUR and SN sensors including line fault detection and short-circuit detection, as well as the measurement data from the 2-wire DC sensors may be processed in accordance with EN 60947-5-2. Signals can be transferred safely in the control level from S0 sensors for measuring the water volume and from 3-wire sensors with PNP or NPN switching outputs. With its S0 interface the rotation speed monitor is also of interest for areas outside industrial automation, such as building automation. The module can safely detect any signal up to 30 V with an input frequency up to 50 kHz. The device is set using a DIP switch or PC software. A start-up override is available to restart the system when standstill monitoring.

The SC-System from Pepperl+Fuchs includes a wide portfolio of signal conditioners for nonhazardous areas. With its space-saving enclosure design that is 6 mm wide and 97 mm high the modules are among the most compact on the market. They can be used at ambient temperatures of up to 70°C. The signal isolators are characterized by 3-way isolation withstanding a working voltage up to 300 V and a test voltage up to 3 KV. Optionally, they are supplied by terminals or a power bus.

NDIR sensing.

Since the 1940s Non-dispersive Infrared (NDIR) sensing has become an important, safe, reliable and accurate method for the detection of gases such as CO, CO2, CH4 and various refrigerants. In essence, one version of this equipment, consists of an infrared lamp, a sample chamber or light tube, a light filter and an infrared detector. The IR light is directed through the sample chamber towards a dual detector. One element of the detector is covered by an optical filter that passes light that is absorbed by the gas being detected the other element is covered by an optical filter that passes light that is not absorbed by the gas being detected.

A gas such as sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is an extremely potent greenhouse gas and therefore leaks to the environment must be minimised. Inorganic, colourless and odourless it does however absorb strongly in the infrared, so NDIR sensors of the type described above are ideal for detection at very low ppm concentrations of this and other important gases.

The Guardian NG NDIR gas monitors from Edinburgh Instruments, typify their commitment to customers convenience and safety, backed by over thirty years of sensor design and manufacturing experience. They are wall-mounted and easy to install, detecting gases from sampling points up to 30 metres away, using the built in sampling system. Monitors are housed in robust plastic IP54 rated enclosures to prevent the ingress of particulates and water and have an integral LCD display with digital alarm set-point controls and password protection to prevent accidental or deliberate change of settings.

The Guardian NG infrared gas monitors provide near-analyser quality, offering continuous sampling, measurement and display of target gas concentrations for either CO2 or CH4 gases, where detection level ranges of between 0 – 3000 ppm and 0 – 100% by volume are required. Data can be easily transferred via an on board RS232 I/F with optional Ethernet I/F and relay outputs for control of external devices. Graphical display of historic readings is also possible over a period defined by the user.

Beta testers wanted for WirelessHART gas detector.

United Electric Controls has announced the availability of beta versions of its Vanguard WirelessHART gas detector. The new detector, which has a five-year battery life, is designed to maximize toxic or explosive gas detection points but eliminates the need for costly and fixed wiring. United Electric Controls is offering free beta trials to gain additional feedback on customer experience and product performance prior to the official product roll-out in early 2017.

“Our new Vanguard gas detector has received approvals from all relevant safety agencies, and we now want to utilize the time we have, before officially releasing the product next year, to learn as much as we can about how it performs in the field,” said Wil Chin, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, United Electric Controls.

United Electric developed the Vanguard detector in response to the market need for a cost effective way to add multiple gas measurement points. The cost of adding one new gas measurement point, including the cost and labor of obtaining ‘hot’ work permits, running conduits for wires, and burying them, can exceed $10,000 per device for land-based systems and as much as five times more for offshore applications. Wireless technology can reduce that cost up to 90-percent while also making the plant much safer.

Vanguard field-interchangeable gas sensor modules detect and record hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or methane (CH4) gas in parts per million (PPM) or percent of lower explosive limits (LELs) respectively, along with network and battery status. WirelessHART 7.2 technology carries signals to local 128 x 64 pixel digital displays or other IEC 62591 compatible connections — all of which integrate seamlessly with existing supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) or asset management (AMS) systems.

Potential Applications
The Vanguard beta program will provide companies running operations that generate (H2S) or (CH4) an opportunity to try it out in various settings, including the following applications:

  • Wireless remote and local gas detection, such as tank farms, oil and gas production facilities, refineries, pipelines, abandoned wells and waste treatment plants.
  • Temporary situations in which the cost of setting up a wired solution is completely unfeasible, such as a maintenance turnaround, natural disaster, security breach or plant expansion.
  • Asset management initiatives, where trending of emissions over time through the deployment of multiple wireless sensors can initiate the necessary predictive and preventive maintenance, or pollution control monitoring.
60-day beta period
Companies who agree to complete feedback surveys, will get free use of a system for 60 days.

EMEA/SAARC sales chief appointed.

Red Lion Controls has appointed Bruce Macpherson as Vice President of Sales for the EMEA and SAARC regions, where he will oversee customer relationships and business growth. Bruce reports directly to Red Lion President Jack Lee and serves on the company’s leadership team.

Impressive showing for photoionisation detectors.

Their MiniPID 2 sensor provides improved temperature stability, greater sensor-to-sensor consistency and more repeatable performance, as well as a new long life 10.6 eV lamp for 10,000 hours continuous operation. An innovative self-diagnostic feature also indicates whether the lamp is failing to illuminate or the electrode stack is contaminated.

The fixed instrument range also includes TVOC, for accurate measurement over three different detection ranges. A user adjustable duty cycle means TVOC can be used for a diverse range of applications within intrinsically safe environments. TVOC employs a diffusive sample technique or an optional flow adaptor can be purchased so the instrument can be used with a pumped sampling system. The 4-20 mA analogue output enables the TVOC to be integrated into a DCS or SCADA system to give warning of high VOC levels or to provide loop feedback for process.

Servicing & maintenance in hazardous areas!

The IS1+ Remote I/O System from R. Stahl enables preventive maintenance implementations in zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas, where servicing systems and components is particularly challenging and expensive.
Preventing severe malfunctions and downtime via advance notifications and timely intervention not only helps reduce regular operating costs, but also and especially reduces the risk of incalculable losses due to unscheduled shutdowns. This is achieved through innovative IS1+ features: notably, intelligent self-diagnostics ensure an early identification of errors, so users can be alerted before malfunctions lead to serious problems. Such alerts can be triggered up to 12 months prior to an expected failure. The Remote I/O System continuously monitors all internal components such as the redundant integrated BusRail as well as operating parameters and external conditions. The latter include, for instance, ambient temperature, thermal shock, the electrical load of the I/O modules, or on/off switching. Based on such data, a smart algorithm calculates the remaining lifespan of components.

User alerts comply with the widely accepted NAMUR NE107 standard on "self-monitoring and diagnosis of field devices". On the one hand, a blue LED on the I/O module is used to show "Maintenance" requirement on location. A diagnostic message is also passed on to control and asset management systems. The blue maintenance message with the defined symbol and an explanatory text appears in the IS1+ DTM. In addition to maintenance notifications, IS1+ intelligent diagnostic functions provide a range of other information. For instance, signal errors are reported via red LEDs for specific channels as well as via error telegrams. Moreover, for IS1+ for PROFIBUS DP in particular, application creation in the control system is facilitated through a signal status bit – much like the status byte for systems such as PROFIBUS PA, it serves to supplement 'good' or 'bad' (for example, in case of line errors) status information that is cyclically transmitted for each process value.

Solar panel safety.

Omron is addressing the challenge of de-energizing solar PV panels and other renewable energy sources with the launch of a new high power DC relay capable of rapidly interrupting 25A at 1000V DC in the event of an emergency.
According to Steve Drumm, European Marketing, Sales Development & Project Management, at Omron, “Rooftop solar panels are becoming increasingly popular in offices and homes, and as a result the issue of their shut-down in the event of a fire in the building is moving up the agenda. Rapid PV shut-down is moving from being highly desirable to mandatory in some markets in order to protect fire fighters and other first responders.”

In response, Omron has launched the G7L-X relay, with a rated load of 1000V DC at 25A and a release time of just 30ms. This relay can be installed close to a PV panel or other renewable source, and disconnect it quickly in an emergency, to permit maintenance or in response to utility requests. The G7L-X conforms to UK and IEC solar inverter standards, as well as applicable UL and VDE electrical standards.

Features of the design include an assisting magnetism circuit, to help achieve a very quick switchover. The relay contacts have been specifically designed to handle the very high DC loads that are a feature of this application, and have a contact gap of 6.0mm for safety.

the G7L-X is rated at 6,000 operations at 600V DC, and 100 operations at 1000V DC – more than enough for its envisaged emergency cut-off application. The device is compact for a relay with this capacity: it’s size is just 52.5 x 35.5 x 41.0 mm. The relay is ideal for outdoor installations, and can operate in ambient temperatures of between -40 and +85 deg C. Omron is also offering a general purpose version of the relay, with a capacity of 20A at 1000VDC.

Encoders using BiSS.

In 2015, the Safety Communication Layer of BiSS Safety was confirmed by TÜV Rhineland for suitability for safety-relevant communication up to and including SIL3. In the future, Hengstler will offer this protocol for its rotary encoder portfolio in order to meet the steady growth in safety applications.

Since 2007, Hengstler has been offering encoders which use the open communication standard BiSS C. A continuous data connection to the bus participants, high transmission rates and free licenses are to be mentioned as clear advantages. The newly introduced BiSS Safety Protocol is 100% based on BiSS C. Hengstler has an enormous experience of countless successful applications in which their encoders play a reliable role.

The company sees enormous potential in the field of functional safety in combination with ever-increasing machine guidelines, increasing number of safety applications. For this purpose, the internal system structure of the encoder is expanded by a combination of available blocks. Light & vision sensors.

The light section sensors from the Pepperl+Fuchs SmartRunner range uniquely combine a high-precision light section sensor and vision sensor into one compact device.
The main part of the SmartRunner technology is the laser light section method which is optimal for detection, observation and protection of even small objects.
These ready-to-use, plug&play devices from Pepperl+Fuchs are optimized at the factory for a specific field of work. Unlike conventional "general purpose" devices, commissioning and parameterization is extremely simple to carry out using teach-in or via data matrix control codes, and does not require trained and qualified personnel.

Thanks to powerful LED lighting, SmartRunner devices are capable of capturing images for the visual documentation of errors, process conditions and quality attributes. The integrated data matrix decoder allows the user to parameterize the sensor simply via data matrix control codes - without using a PC. The light section sensors supply the detection result as a good or bad signal to the switching outputs, which can be processed using any control panel.

The first representatives of the device family to be available are the SmartRunner "Matcher" and the SmartRunner "Detector". The Matcher is optimized to recognize a previously taught-in reference contour. Typical tasks include checking the position and accuracy of objects with high precision, to verify whether the robot can grasp body components, for example.

In contrast, the SmartRunner Detector monitors the taught-in scene for the entry of foreign bodies that pose a danger to sensitive machine parts, such as expensive lenses and precision tools. It detects objects with a size range of up to 1 mm with high accuracy, using a trapezoidal measuring range that is 350 mm wide and 700 mm deep.

The SmartRunner has numerous areas of use, such as in the automotive industry and in many areas of plant and mechanical engineering.

Bidirectional data memory module.

A compact memory module with IP 67 protection is just 34 x 16 x 8 mm in size is available from Balluff.  It can be used as a memory storage device on interchangeable units such as milling heads on gantry type machining centers.

This means the assemblies can carry their actual operating data along with them. With the following advantage: When a machine is changed, all the data such as the number of use cycles, shock and vibration values or lubrication and oil change intervals are directly loaded.

The work required to install and parameterize the module is minimal. Only a single standard cable is required for stable, fault-free, bidirectional data transmission between the milling head and controller. The cable is connected to the milling head interface in the system ring. Data transmission is noise-immune as well as resistant to EMC effects. The module can hold a total of 14 segments of 64 bytes each.

Machine operators will profit from the fact that when a milling head is switched from one machine to another, all the identifying and usage data will be automatically copied and loaded from the milling head memory into the NC controller through a cable. When maintenance or repair work is needed, the service personnel can read out all the data from the memory chip on a PC or laptop and update it as needed. This gives the plant operator continual and transparent information about the current status of the milling head.

The latest technologies and the future of engineering.

National Instruments reports that over 600 delegates from across Northern Europe attended this years NIDays in London (GB) in November. They collectively represented a vast field of industrial and professional sectors.

The previous evening, the Engineering Impact Awards took place at the RSA House and showcased the most innovative projects based on NI software and hardware.
