Contactless charging and energy systems strengthens offer.

Contactless charging and energy systems for Autonomous Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), Mobile Robots (Cobot) and Industrial Trucks etaLINK Inductive power systems available from 1kW to 36kW.

LtoR: Julian Seume, Bernhard Erdl
and  Matthieu Ebert (PULS Wireless)
PULS has acquired the business of wireless charging specialist Wiferion. Wiferion's technology will now be further enhanced by the capabilities of PULS, a technology-driven power conversion company based in Munich with a revenue of 250 million euros in 2022. Their customers will now benefit from a global presence in production and application support. The current operational Wiferion team will remain in Freiburg (D) as the PULS Wireless business unit.

PULS has taken over all existing contracts, trademark rights and patents of Wiferion but nothing will change in the operation of the business for customers. In the medium term, users will benefit from PULS' global manufacturing capacities. With its own modern production lines in the Czech Republic, China and Germany, large quantities of product can be produced in the highest quality and scaled up as required. In addition, PULS can procure more cost-effectively due to its purchasing volume and global sources, securing the supply chain and product life.

Synergies between Wiferion and PULS.
Both companies manufacture power electronics, where efficiency and reliability are key. Wireless power transmission is a special form of power supply where the transformer in a power supply is replaced by spatially separated coils. The similarity in technology will allow PULS developers to quickly familiarise themselves with Wiferion's products and topologies. And since PULS already has a strong presence in intralogistics, the wireless charging solutions are an excellent addition to the existing product portfolio and address a similar customer base.

"As a pioneer, Wiferion has successfully established inductive charging for the energy supply of mobile robots and forklifts in the market and gained a leading position. With the additional capabilities of PULS, we want to make this system the global market standard and will invest significantly for this purpose," says Bernhard Erdl, Managing Director and Owner of PULS GmbH.

"PULS employs more than 100 of the best developers in the industry and has global production and sales locations that take our charging technology and scalability to a new level," enthuses Julian Seume, former CSO of Wiferion, who together with Matthieu Ebert forms the management team of the PULS Wireless Business Unit. "In the area of new product development and application support, we are now in a much stronger position and can offer our customers an even better service."

This includes the intelligent DC UPS control and charging electronics (24V/6A) with an upstream AC/DC converter as well as the built-in lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The housing elements and connections are carefully sealed and resistant to water, ice, oil and dust in accordance with protection class IP65. A built-in pressure equalisation element with membrane prevents condensation from forming inside the unit. The operating temperature of the UPSI-2406IP-38AC covers a wide range from -20 to +50°C. The high-quality input and output cables are permanently installed on the housing.

Long-term bridging for 24VDC applications up to 100 hours.
Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of sensitive or safety-related 24VDC systems supplied from the AC mains is particularly important in case of blackouts, brownouts or flicker. For international use, the UPSI-2406IP-38AC has a wide-range AC input from 90 to 264 VAC with active PFC and high-efficiency AC/DC converter topology. In AC mains operation, which is automatically set after the input voltage is applied, the 24VDC output is activated and the integrated LiFePO4 energy storage is charged at the same time. In case of a voltage drop of the input voltage below the smallest nominal value, the UPS is switched to battery operation with regulated DC output voltage within fractions of a second and enables backup times of up to 100h. When the AC input voltage returns, the UPS is automatically switched back to regular mains operation and charging of the energy storage continues.

Integrated LiFePO4 high-performance battery pack.
The LiFePO4 energy storage (lithium iron phosphate) with 330Wh convinces in safety-relevant applications with a particularly stable battery chemistry, a long service life of at least 10 years and more than 6000 full charge and discharge cycles. Bicker Elektronik deliberately uses the particularly safe lithium iron phosphate chemistry for all high-performance battery packs, which makes thermal runaway almost impossible. The UPSI-2406IP-38AC also meets the safety requirements of the IEC/EN 62040-1 standard. The battery management system (BMS) monitors and controls the complete charging and discharging process of each battery cell of the energy storage unit. The integrated cell balancing ensures a balanced and even charge of all cells so that the full capacity of the lithium iron phosphate battery pack remains permanently usable. In addition, the UPSI-2406IP-38AC offers a battery start function, which makes it possible to start a 24V application from the battery by pressing a button on the UPS (up to 6 A max. load current), without the AC voltage supply being present.

24V Nonstop Power.

Power failures? Brownouts? Flicker? The intelligent DC emergency power supply UPSI-2412DP3 from Bicker Elektronik reliably protects safety-relevant 24VDC applications against system failure and data loss. For buffering of the 24VDC supply voltage, Bicker Elektronik relies on the particularly safe and durable LiFePO4 battery technology. The compact DC UPS in a robust DIN rail housing is ideally suited for many years of use in control cabinet applications and decentralized solutions for protecting embedded IPCs, controllers, motors, sensors, measurement, control and safety technology, etc.
All product features of the UPSI-2412DP3 at a glance

• Powerful 24V DC UPS (DIN rail version)
• Integrated LiFePO4 high-performance battery
• Up to 5,000 full cycles
• Capacity 64Wh
• Intelligent input current detection
• Regulated output voltage in battery mode
• Minimum load detection
• Power fail timer function
• Relay contact for power fail
• Shutdown & Reboot function for IPC systems
• Charge level indicator
• Battery start function
• Shutdown by external signal
• USB & RS232 interfaces
• Plug & Play - Immediately recognized as a UPS by the operating system.
• Extended functionality with 'UPSGen2 Configuration' software included.

The integrated LiFePO4 battery pack impresses in safety-relevant applications with a particularly stable battery chemistry, a long service life of at least 10 years and up to 5000 full cycles. The use of lithium iron phosphate cells makes thermal runaway almost impossible. The specially developed battery management system (BMS) with cell balancing ensures balanced and even charging of all cells so that the full capacity of the battery pack can be used over the long term. The UPSI-2412DP3 thus ensures maximum reliability and safety for demanding applications in the areas of Industry 4.0, automation, robotics, medical and laboratory technology, renewable energies, process technology, infrastructure, safety, vision and inspection.

In contrast to the supposedly cheaper lead-acid batteries, high-quality lithium iron phosphate cells have a service life and cycle stability that is approx. 15-20 times longer. In addition, with the LiFePO4 battery pack, 100% of the full nominal capacity can be used permanently. Lead-acid batteries also have significant limitations in terms of depth of discharge and number of cycles. When calculating the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) over the entire period of use of at least 10 years, there is a clear cost advantage compared to lead-acid batteries, especially since there is no effort for maintenance and battery replacement with LiFePO4 during this period.

On the input side, the implemented PowerSharing function of the UPSI-2412DP3 ensures that the upstream AC/DC power supply does not have to be oversized, but that the input power is kept constant and distributed accordingly to the load and LiFePO4 battery charger. With a low load at the output, more energy flows into the charger and vice versa. The maximum charging current is 4.5A.

In normal operation, the UPSI-2412DP3 forwards the input voltage directly to the output, charges the integrated LiFePO4 battery pack in parallel and monitors all relevant parameters, currents and voltages. In the event of voltage dips or a power failure, a MOSFET disconnects the input within a few microseconds and the connected load is supplied with power from the energy storage without interruption. In backup mode, the UPSI-2412DP3 provides a constantly regulated DC output voltage.

For mobile applications, the UPSI-2412DP3 offers the option of starting the supplied application directly from the integrated and powerful LiFePO4 battery, without a mains voltage supply being available or connected. The maximum load current for battery start is 7A.

The UPSI-2412DP3 has an integrated USB interface for connection to an IPC system and is recognized directly as a UPS by the operating system – without additional driver or software installation.

The free available software 'UPS Gen2 Configuration' is for setting and parameterizing the DC UPS system and for real-time monitoring. The UPS and battery status displays include all relevant voltages, currents as well as battery temperature, state of charge (SOC), run times and cycles. The parameters that can be preset include the load sensor (mA), shutdown delay, maximum backup time, minimum charge capacity before system start, timer function and restart delay. Autonomous operation is then possible with the set values.

The new parameter "Shut Down OS in" can also be used to set the time before the computer system is shut down and switched off in the event of a power failure. This means that, in addition to your own operating system settings via the state of charge of the energy storage ("Shut Down OS at SOC"), you can now also define a specific time specification for controlled shutdown in UPS backup mode.

In the 'UPSGen2 Configuration' software, the minimum output current to the DC load in UPS battery operation can be set and monitored via the load sensor. If the load at the output of the UPSI-2412DP3 falls below this limit value, the integrated LiFePO4 battery is automatically disconnected from the charging and control unit after 10 seconds, so that no unnecessary and creeping discharge can take place. In addition, the UPSI-2412DP3 can also be switched off in a defined manner using the minimum load detection.

The functionality and behavior of the 2-pin relay connection in the event of a power failure can be defined using the 'UPSGen2 Configuration' software: 'Normally Open', 'Normally Closed' or 'Shutdown Pulse'. When the relay is closed, the resistance between the two pins is ⁓ 0 ohms, otherwise the contacts are 'open load'.

In the event of a 'PowerFail', the UPSI-2412DP3 signals the failure of the supply voltage via the integrated interface, so that a controlled shutdown of the computer system is initiated and valuable data is saved. After the supply voltage returns, the integrated reboot function automatically restarts the supplied industrial PC without the need for complex on-site intervention, e.g. in the case of completely self-sufficient computer systems in inaccessible locations.

The marine-compliant power supply meets the high requirements of EMC class B without additional external filters and can be used directly in bridge and deck applications.
The CP20.245-R2 has optimal electronic and mechanical design for the harsh environmental conditions found at sea and onshore. The power supply is characterised by its high immunity to transients and voltage peaks as well as its robust aluminium housing. The device provides full output power of 480W even with fluctuating ambient temperatures between -40°C and + 60°C. The extensive approval package includes Marine DNV, Marine ABS and ATEX, among others.

High system reliability is assured thanks to an integrated decoupling feature, which makes the CP20.245-R2 unique. An onboard decoupling MOSFET enables a safe 1 + 1 and n + 1 redundancy between multiple power supplies. This ensures the availability of all process and safety systems in the event of a fault. The innovative design removes the requirement for an additional external redundancy module, reducing cost and saving space. Special plug-in connectors allow hot-swap replacement of the devices during operation, using the sequence described in the data sheet.

The CP20.245-R2 is based on the field proven industrial version of the CP20, which is used in thousands of applications worldwide. The high efficiency of 95.2% ensures low power losses and little waste heat. In addition, the 20% power reserve from the basic version is maintained. The compact product with a width of only 48mm has been retained despite the additional, application-specific features.

For remote status monitoring two relay contacts for DC-OK and alarm signals are provided. Two additional inputs allow the power supply to be put into an energy-saving standby mode using the remote ON / OFF function and automatic load sharing in parallel operation for greater power output can be realised. Parallel operation ensures an optimised temperature balance between the connected power supplies, prolonging the service life of the devices.

All CP20 versions share the same compact housing with dimensions of 48x124x127mm (WxHxD). This is made possible by a very high efficiency of 95.2%. As a result of the low power losses, less heat is generated in the housing and the clearance and creepage distances can be reduced.

Programmable power supply units.

The PSB series of programmable digital power supplies/loads from Interpro Systems,  are microprocessor controlled bi-directional supplies that feature two devices in one: an auto-ranging DC power supply and an electronic DC load with energy recovery. The bi-directional package replaces individual programmable sources and loads, and the regenerative load returns up to 95% of test energy to the grid.

The PSB series enables two-quadrant operation in a single, efficient, and easy-to-use instrument eliminating the need for two topologies. Combining the features of a programmable source and regenerative programmable load into one chassis frees up rack space, reduces weight and cost, and reduces generated heat while recovering load energy back to the grid.

Bidirectional DC-DC converters (BDCs) are becoming increasingly popular due to the growing need for systems to have the capability of bidirectional energy transfer between two DC buses. In addition to traditional applications in DC motor drives, new applications for BDCs include energy storage in renewable energy systems, fuel cell energy systems, hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).

Intepro PSB power supplies are available with outputs of 15KW in a 3U x 19” rack chassis (PSB 9000) and 30KW in 4U (PSB 1000), and they may be connected in parallel for operation up to 2MW. The auto-ranging bidirectional output stage maintains full power over a wide output range while bidirectional operation provides seamless transitions between source and sink modes.

The unique capability of the Intepro PSB series is the ability to be programmed to seamlessly switch between source and sink with no “off” time. When operating as the load the device synchronizes with its 3-phase power input to recover upwards of 95% of the energy. When operating as a source, the unit has an efficiency of up to 93%, generating less heat in both modes. This provides further energy savings by reducing the cooling costs in the test environment

The PSB series features a wide range 3-phase input voltage from 342-528V, 45-66 Hz, with output voltage ratings of 60V – 2,000V and current ratings from 40A-1000A. The devices include a wide range of programmable functions to simulate complex testing such as electric vehicle load profiles, battery charging, PV simulation per EN 50530 and MPP tracking and others.

Other features include automatic crossover when the unit goes from load to source or vice versa once specified conditions are met, remote sensing with automatic detection, temperature controlled cooling fan speeds, control panel with gorilla-glass touchscreen for actual values, set values, status and alarms, USB and Ethernet port integrated or alternatively installed IEEE/GPIB Port, SCPI command language and LabVIEW VIs supported, Windows control software provided.

Intepro Systems offers a wide selection of Auto-Ranging programmable DC Power Supplies. All Power Supplies are MOS-FET based, providing a high-performance power stage that offers high speed slew rates and low output ripple. Intepro’s electronic DC Power Supplies are designed for ultimate flexibility and configuration in providing the ideal power input solution for testing converters, chargers, batteries, adapters, and power electronic components.

AC/DC converters.

The latest models in the PULS Power PIANO series have been introduced to the market. The PIANO-PIM family have been designed for use in the many industrial applications which only require a basic power supply so that customers do not have to pay for unnecessary control and communication facilities.

Marco van der Linden, UK Country Manager for PULS Power, comments, "Our PIANO range continues the PULS philosophy of offering our customers “more with less”. Our new PIANO-PIM range of power supplies are ideally suited for worldwide applications requiring a simple, basic, cost effective power supply with no compromise on quality. The compact size of the PIM36, PIM60 and PIM90 allows more flexibility in system design while the simple installation provides significant time and cost savings. PULS power supplies continue to set new records in their respective performance classes in the quality-critical functions such as efficiency, lifetime and size."

The PIANO-PIM series offer a cost effective, space-saving, efficient, reliable and durable DIN-Rail mounted AC/DC converters. The 100-240VAC wide range input, 24VDC output units are available in three versions: PIM36 (36W), PIM60 (60W) and PIM90 (90W). With these additions to the already very successful PIANO power supply range PULS now provides users with a complete, cost-oriented, product family with outputs from 30-480W. At ambient temperatures between -10°C and +55°C, the devices work at full power without derating. The PIM90 is also available as an NEC Class 2 version for the US market.

This range uses innovative technology to make savings in cost and space. The single PCB design uses a reduced number of high-quality components, lowering cost, simplifying manufacture and improving reliability. The PIM90 is currently the smallest 90W DIN-Rail power supply on the market. The compact design saves space on the DIN-Rail in the control cabinet and makes them ideally suited for decentralised use in cramped systems or spaces – e.g. building automation.

The high efficiency synchronous rectifier design based on MOSFET technology (90W PIANO achieving over 93.8% at full load and +40°C ambient temperature) reduces the need for system cooling and further increases reliability. With exceptionally low losses even in idle or standby mode at < 0.5W, the PIANO-PIM range particularly is useful for applications in building automation. In building safety systems power supplies often remain in standby mode for days or even weeks. Due to the very low no-load losses in the idle state, considerable energy costs can be saved over the long term.

The high efficiency and optimised thermal design allow polycarbonate housings to be used, reducing weight and providing a robust impact resistant enclosure. The use of a plastic housing means the small, low power PIANO power supplies can be operated without grounding, saving additional installation time and cabling costs.

The PIM60 and PIM90 power supplies are available with either screw terminals or time saving push-in terminals. PULS devices are optimally prepared for automated wiring processes. The PIANO-PIM range meet all international safety agency approvals and are CE marked.
