Reducing dependency on multiple vendors.

Investing in new industrial automation hardware and software solutions is essential to support business growth. But not all growth is planned or anticipated. This can lead to solutions being implemented because they meet an immediate business need or a customer requirement, rather than forming part of considered, long-term strategy. Under such circumstances, many manufacturers can find themselves managing and maintaining disparate solutions from several solution providers. This creates complications, from having multiple points of contact for device maintenance, to different service schedules and contracts for each device; not to mention the difficulty of having one holistic view for monitoring or programming automation solutions. This haphazard architecture framework can stifle innovation, and it makes achieving key goals – like increasing productivity, meeting compliance regulations or achieving net zero targets – much harder.

The power of consolidation.
An example of a company that saw the value of reducing its dependency on multiple vendors, is Artikon Machinery. Established over 30 years ago, today it is one of Turkey’s top five manufacturers of PVC and aluminium profile processing machines. The company exports to more than 100 countries and operates through over 120 dealers worldwide. Artikon Machinery has embraced a no-compromise approach to quality in its production, from design through to R&D. It is committed to providing quality machines, and not budget ones. Its R&D team works closely with its domestic and international customers to establish their needs, which ensures it integrates useful, functional ideas in the development of its machines. Faced with the inherent complications that come from operating multi-brand automation and production solutions, Artikon Machinery chose to streamline its operations to more effectively meet growing demand from customers, while maintaining the high-quality standards the brand is known for.

A new era demands new solutions.
Artikon Machinery determined that the new solution needed to integrate automation capabilities that could support multiple machine types while offering compatibility with its existing CAD/CAM systems. In order to facilitate decision-making, it also needed to provide efficient data flow. Given its objectives, the technical requirements demanded by Artikon Machinery included support for G-code processing; a real-time HMI interface and program management; the elimination of manual file loading; centralised control and data visibility; and high levels of compatibility and optimal performance. It also had to be scalable to provide the flexibility needed to easily accommodate future growth.

Having assessed competitor offerings, Artikon Machinery’s engineering, R&D and production specialists determined that Delta’s automation solutions were best suited to its current and future needs. They stood apart for their system compatibility, product reliability, seamless integration capabilities and strong local support. Combined with Delta’s global reputation for product excellence, Artikon Machinery was confident it could successfully replace its multi-brand automation components with Delta’s unified ecosystem.

In consultation it was established that the most suitable solutions for this application would be Delta’s DVP15MC (a multi-axis motion controller); DOP-115WX (an HMI Touch panel); 8 x ASDA-A2-M (an AC servo drive and motor); 2 x VFD-EL-W (a new generation compact vector control drive); DX-2300 (an industrial Ethernet DIA cloud router data acquisition device); AS228T (a PLC Controller); DOP-110IS (a Standard HMI); DOP-112WX (a 24-bit colour TFT LCD) and a DVS-005R00 (a 5-port unmanaged Ethernet Switch).

Artikon Machinery machine
Since the long-term implementation began two years ago, 25 devices have already been replaced - with only five still to be transitioned – demonstrating the compatibility of Delta’s solutions, and their device-to device interoperability. This rapid deployment has seen Artikon Machinery enjoy a rapid return on investment. Following the deployment, Artikon Machinery speaks positively about how Delta’s solutions have driven improved workflows, reduced manual tasks, and added greater accuracy to decision making through the provision of real-time data management. Artikon Machinery also reports that it is enjoying improved process speed, increased machine uptime and reduced error rates in welding, cutting, and cleaning operations. The seamless data handling through FTP/USB and Lua scripting has now become a key talking point during customer site visits, impressing many with the high-level of automation operating at the factory.

The successful deployment at Artikon Machinery demonstrates Delta’s ability to deliver end-to-end automation solutions in sectors like the PVC and aluminium profile processing industry. It has further helped Artikon Machinery to position itself as a strong competitor against other brands in this sector. The deployment illustrates how Delta’s single automation platform can replace multiple suppliers across an entire machine portfolio, as well as its strength in offering a fully integrated and scalable automation solution that meets high-performance expectations. As Artikon Machinery demonstrates, Delta can be trusted as a high-performance, fully-integrated technology partner with solutions suited to even the most demanding industrial automation environments.

Prioritised and precise safety information.

Increasing operating and display safety in the process industry and railway sectors.

HIMA and DEUTA, a specialist in certified display and safety technology, have jointly launched a new solution, SafeHMI, that combines HIMA safety systems and function block libraries with a safety-related human-machine interface (HMI) panel based on IconTrust technology.

The innovative solution sets new standards in safety-related visualization, offering context-sensitive alarm management, safe operation and display monitoring in accordance with SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and has been consistently designed with an aim to meet functional safety requirements.

DEUTA's Dr Rudolf Ganz and HIMA's Jörg de la Motte.

While classic SCADA systems and MIMIC panels often reach their limits in safety-critical applications, SafeHMI delivers clear, prioritized information – exactly where it is required.

"With DEUTA, we have a technology partner with decades of experience in the field of safety-related displays, especially in the rail and transport sectors," said Jörg de la Motte, CEO of the HIMA Group. "With SafeHMI, we are creating a solution that makes functional safety in the industrial environment visible, controllable and digitally manageable."

At the heart of the system is the dynamic alarm display, which reduces the burden on operators during fault situations. Relevant alarms are automatically prioritized, along with concise instructions for action and limited to a maximum of four simultaneous entries. This ensures that an overview is maintained, even in critical moments and operating errors are avoided.

The solution allows to make inputs, acknowledgements or safe overrides directly through the touch panel – tested, documented and validated according to SIL 2/3. This means that maintenance functions or recipe changes can be carried out digitally and documented in an auditable manner. Bernd Schäfer, Product Manager at HIMA, said: "With SafeHMI, we are taking display and operating logic to a new level of safety. In critical situations, operators not only receive information, but also clear instructions for action and they can rely on what they see being accurate."

A key safety feature is the IconTrust technology developed by DEUTA. It continuously monitors screen content and reliably detects any deviations between the displayed and expected values. This makes the display itself an active safety element that is certified up to SIL 3, offering operators maximum reliability.

The SafeHMI solution is fully integrated into the HIMA Safety Platform. Configuration, modifications and enhancements are carried out using standardized function blocks, which are offered as part of a certified library. This makes SafeHMI an important component of HIMA’s #safetygoesdigital initiative, with which the company is driving digitalizing of the entire life cycle of safety-related systems and their peripherals.

"In partnership with HIMA, we can now provide generic safety technology for operating and display units used in the railway sector with over 30,000 units for new fields of application for which no comparable solution has been available to date. In combination with the HIMA safety system, the application possibilities are almost limitless," said Dr Rudolf Ganz, CEO of the DEUTA Group and DEUTA-WERKE.

Durable, visible and functional display.

Touchscreen HMI provides essential visualization and high-performance multitouch control, even in the most space-limited applications.

IDEC Corporation has expanded its operator interface (OI) family with its new HG1J Series touchscreen. This device uses the latest innovations to provide vivid visualizations and responsive multi-touch operation, all in an extremely compact form factor so the technology can be used in more applications than ever before. The HG1J Series is the successor of the HG1G Series HMIs, and it provides an upgrade path for existing installations.

Compact and durable HMI display.
The HMI’s projected capacitive touch panel (PCAP) advanced technology—like what is used for smartphones and tablets—saves space and improves performance. Besides being water- and scratch-resistant, PCAP is very responsive, and it resists false signals when dirt or water droplets are present on the HMI face. Fewer touchscreen layers and better light transmission ratings mean less backlight power is needed, and the display provides an industry-leading 500 cd/m² brightness level featuring 16 million colors and a 480x272 display resolution. In addition to being multi-touch, users can interact with the touchscreen while using thin gloves. The front bezel carries no branding, of interest to many OEM suppliers.

Engineered for any environment.
The glass-top design is wear-resistant even in harsh environments, and it delivers a long life with a 50,000-hour-rated backlight, making these units low maintenance. The battery-free design uses a hyper-capacitor to maintain clock time for 20 days, while magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM) provides non-volatile storage for programs, retentive registers, and log data. With a rated input voltage ranging from 12 to 24V DC and push-in wiring connectors that simplify installation, the HG1J is ideal for industrial, vehicle, and solar-powered applications. Ratings for extreme temperatures from -20 to 55˚C, IP66 and IP67 for wash-down areas, IP66F and IP67F for oil resistance, UL61010, UL Type 4X/13, and Class I Div 2 make the HG1J HMI suitable for a wide range of applications and locations.

Intuitive software.
HMI configuration is accessed through IDEC’s standard WindOI-NV4 software, which is easy-to-use and intuitive, with a drag-and-drop interface and extensive image library. Projects can automatically be converted from one HMI size to another within seconds. Script programming, multilingual capabilities, security, trend charts, data logs, alarm logs, and other functions and features are supported for the HMI.

Connectivity and IIoT.
Two USB-A ports support flash drives for data logging, recipes, and program transfer—along with dongles for speakers, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The embedded Ethernet port provides users with easy access for remote maintenance and communication, and the Modbus TCP/IP, BACnet IP, EtherNet/IP, and MQTT protocols are supported for connecting with other intelligent devices. The built-in RS232C and RS422/485 serial communication ports support Modbus RTU and allow the HG1J to communicate with other serial PLCs or devices, like barcode readers or temperature controllers. A main HG1J can operate up to 15 other IDEC HMI devices over the serial port using OI Link communication, which simplifies wiring and reduces communication loading. The HG1J supports the use of up to four protocols simultaneously.

Many communication options are available for users to create automation and IIoT solutions incorporating multiple industrial protocols, the FTP protocol, remote monitoring and control, email/text messaging, Twitter/X, iOS and Android apps, and custom web pages.

An adept HMI operator interface solution.
The IDEC HG1J HMI packages modern technologies into a conveniently compact display size and form factor, making it the best solution for space-limited industrial applications. The HG1J is ideal for many laboratory, commercial, and industrial applications throughout industries like food and beverage, consumer packaged goods, oil and gas, and agriculture. Designers of test equipment, HVAC systems, pump controls, remote wells and booster stations, and other OEM machines and process skids are finding the HG1J to be the best visualization solution for their equipment.

Visualizing and automating equipment and machinery.

The SmartAXIS touch family from IDEC Corporastion has been updated with the new FT1J Series combined PLC+HMI. This device combines a built-in full function controller, both onboard and expandable I/O, and an advanced technology 4.3” touchscreen display, in a compact all-in-one form factor that is rightsized for visualizing and automating a wide range of applications. The FT1J Series builds on the success of the FT1A-C and -M Series 3.8” PLC+HMIs, which remain available, and provides designers with another size option.

Combined PLC+HMI advantages.
An all-in-one PLC+HMI requires far less panel door and interior space than individual devices. The unit’s thin bezel provides the greatest possible display area compared with its installation footprint, and the entire package requires only a shallow mounting depth clearance. Installation is simplified because the PLC and HMI are internally connected, share the same network connection, require only one power supply (and consumes less power than individually separate PLC and HMI installations), and all connections use push-in wiring connectors. Furthermore, the FT1J is ready to use and communicate right out of the box. End users configure the PLC+HMI with an intuitive and easily-used integrated development environment for both PLC and HMI functions, providing significant configuration and programming efficiencies.

The integrated PLC and HMI each have their own dedicated CPU and user memory for optimized scan time performance, and they communicate natively with each other. Built-in I/O includes 8 points of DC inputs (configurable as all discrete, or 6 discrete and 2 analog 0-10VDC or 4-20mA 12-bit). Discrete inputs can operate as high-speed counters up to 20KHz, with a maximum of 4 points of single-phase and 1 point of two-phase. For discrete outputs, a relay version provides 4 points of 2A relay outputs, while a transistor version provides 4 points of 0.5A transistor outputs. The transistor version also provides 2 points of 0-10VDC or 4-20mA analog outputs. Built-in transistor outputs are also pulse capable up to 200KHz.

The FT1J supports up to two expansion cartridges of discrete or analog I/O, in a variety of configurations and including a 2-point RTD/thermocouple analog input version. All analog inputs and outputs are 12-bit resolution. Also, designers can use the Ethernet port and the SX8R Bus Coupler to provide expanded amounts of remote I/O.

The HMI’s projected capacitive touch panel (PCAP) advanced technology—like what is used for smartphones and tablets—saves space and improves performance, while providing 480x272 resolution and 16 million colors. The glass-top design is wear-resistant even in harsh environments, and it delivers a long life with a 50,000-hour-rated backlight, making these units low maintenance. The battery-free design eliminates the need for replacements, reducing maintenance and easing overseas shipments by avoiding battery-related regulations. A hyper-capacitor maintains clock time for 20 days, while magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM) provides non-volatile storage for programs, retentive registers, and log data. Ratings for extreme temperatures from -20 to 55˚C, IP66 and IP67 for wash-down areas, IP66F and IP67F for oil resistance, UL60101, UL Type 4X/12/13, and Class I Div 2 make the FT1J PLC+HMI suitable

All PLC and HMI configuration is accessed through IDEC’s standard WindOI-NV4 software, which is easy-to-use and intuitive, with a drag-and-drop interface and extensive image library. Script programming, PIDD loop control, pulse width modulation (PWM) control, multilingual capabilities, security, trend charts, data logs, alarm logs, and other functions and features are supported for both the HMI and the PLC. Users only need to keep track of one program file as it supports both the PLC and HMI.

The FT1J also supports the concurrent use of up to three other protocols.

Many communication options are available for users to create automation and IIoT solutions incorporating multiple industrial protocols, the FTP protocol, remote monitoring and control, email/text messaging, Twitter/X, iOS and Android apps, and custom web pages. They package modern technologies into a conveniently compact display size and form factor, making it the ideal solution for space-limited and other industrial applications which are not fit for individual PLC and HMI installations. The new FT1J 4.3” device, and the recently released FT2J 7” device, provide designers with options to size the visualization and control functions for their applications. The FT1J is ideal for many laboratory, commercial, and industrial applications throughout industries like food and beverage, consumer packaged goods, oil and gas, and agriculture. Designers of test equipment, HVAC systems, pump controls, remote wells and booster stations, and other OEM machines and process skids are finding the FT1J to be the best fit as a control and visualization solution.

    Template configuration for marine applications.

A free template configuration for marine applications, based on Emerson's Movicon.NExT™ HMI/SCADA system, and its PACSystems™ edge controllers, industrial panel PCs, and other control and networking products. This marine demonstration configuration provides a comprehensive user visualisation and interface experience, and it is available free of charge so designers and shipbuilders can accelerate their efforts to deliver a thoroughly modern and unified “single pane of glass” shipboard monitoring and control system.

Marine industry vessels like superyachts and ships may encompass as much automation complexity as a factory or a small city. Monitoring and control requirements are diverse, including subsystems used for propulsion, power delivery, climate control, machinery health supervision, security, and more. However, functionality is typically fragmented, and integration efforts must employ various digital communication protocols and hardwired signals. Furthermore, any visualisation system must be designed for always-on operation, even under challenging marine conditions.

These superyacht and ship characteristics are remarkably similar to the conditions found in a typical manufacturing factory, so it makes sense that industrial-grade Emerson automation technologies are an ideal fit for robust shipboard monitoring and control. The marine demo runs on redundant edge controllers and industrial panel PCs, which is a proven architecture well-suited for reliable and resilient operation.

Emerson edge controllers incorporate operational technology (OT) communication protocols, and they are adaptable to specialized marine industry protocols, so all instruments, devices, and subsystems can be integrated. Information technology (IT) protocols are optimized for conveying a large amount of data efficiently to and among PCs, supporting historizing, alarming, visualization, and other functionality. A self-healing PROFINET ring for accessing remote I/O, and redundant IT switches and rings, ensure uninterrupted communications amongst all devices. Data security is addressed because the HMI/SCADA solution carries IEC 62443-3-3 certification.

The marine demo has been developed by Emerson with numerous sample dashboards and displays, following a modern aesthetic to deliver unprecedented amounts of information in a streamlined format. Examples of systems and equipment supported include propulsion and Marex controls, electrical power generation/management, valve controls and tank volumes, schematics, fire detection, exterior/navigational lighting, interior lighting, CCTV, HVAC, alarms, data logging, and more. Here is a video depicting the marine demo.

Digital transformation is being implemented throughout factories worldwide so users can experience better visualisation and gain access to valuable data-driven insights. These same technologies are coming to seagoing vessels, and industrial automation and HMI/SCADA platforms are a superior choice. The Emerson marine demo combines proven hardware, software, and networking—providing a wealth of sample displays and concepts, which marine developers can use as templates for accelerating their designs.
