New series of displays.

Offers greater design flexibility and faster time to market.

The Danfoss DM series of programmable displays has been expanded with the launch of the DM-Qt series. The DM-Qt display series supports Qt as a plug-in to PLUS+1® GUIDE, where user interface (UI) design can now be developed through the Qt framework — the new standard for creating embedded display UIs in the automobile industry. Qt offers greater design flexibility and ease of use, enabling displays to be programmed faster and reducing time to market.

In addition to faster, easier UI design, Qt tools enable reuse of templates across multiple device platforms and display brands. Elements of the UI design can be scaled per application requirements. This eliminates the need to create new UI designs from scratch for each different machine platform or display manufacturer.

“Designing graphical user interfaces for our DM displays using Qt tools should take about half as much time as it would with other programs due to its extensive library of preexisting elements and a seamless workflow between design and development,” said Herman Oberoi, Senior Portfolio Manager, Displays, Danfoss Power Solutions. “By supporting the industry standard solution for UI development, we now have a great hardware product with incredible design capabilities powered by Qt.”

DM-Qt displays enable graphical development in Qt Design Studio. Application programming is managed in Danfoss’ PLUS+1 GUIDE software, and the PLUS+1 Service Tool combines Qt-created graphics with application code to program DM-Qt displays. Danfoss will continue to offer its standard DM displays with UI design managed in VBSE, Danfoss’ proprietary graphics development tool within PLUS+1 GUIDE.

DM-Qt displays are available in the same sizes and with the same options as standard DM displays. Sizes include 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch displays, with features such as outstanding sunlight and wide-angle viewability, automatic brightness adjustment, superior touch responsiveness, and rugged design with high ingress protection ratings.

A range of high-performance micro-OLED and micro-LCD displays featuring ultra-high resolution, high brightness, high contrast and low power consumption are available in NED module solutions.

Near eye display solutions are increasingly being used in wide range of industrial display systems such as inspection equipment, remote control systems, microscopes, electronic view finders, thermal imaging, medical diagnostic equipment and defence systems.

The current line-up of NED modules available support a range of micro-OLED and micro-LCD displays from 0.32-inch to 1.35-inch diagonal screen size, with pixel resolutions ranging from 800 x 600 pixels up to 3552 x 3552 pixels, and brightness specifications from 1800cd/m² up to 20,000cd/m². MIPI and RGB interfaces feature throughout.

The NED module solutions feature three different optical module types which include Birdbath, Pancake and Waveguide designs which support different applications and usage. These modules differ in how they project the image from the display source to the user’s eye.

      • Birdbath optics consist of a curved mirror that reflects light from the display into the user’s line of sight. This solution has the advantage of being low-cost and lightweight. Although birdbath optics are not the thinnest technology, it has excellent display performance and supports dioptre adjustment.

      • Pancake optics uses a flat mirror to fold the light path from the display to the user’s view, creating a thin and compact design. Pancake optics use very high resolution and bright displays, which can increase cost and power consumption.

      • Waveguide optics uses a thin transparent lightguide to transmit light from the display to the user’s eye through internal reflection. Although complex, Waveguide optics can achieve a very slim and lightweight design.

Justin Coleman, displays division manager said, “Although the consumer market for virtual and augmented reality is one of the fastest growing market segments for Near Eye Displays, the continued design and development of near eye display technology is finding many new and potential industrial applications. Near eye display systems offer several key advantages over traditional full-size displays including extremely compact size, high portability and very low power consumption.”

NED optics, which are also often used in wearable equipment, create a high resolution, large field of view display image for one or both eyes. Near eye applications enable the human eye to perceive a virtual display image that appears much larger, at a greater distance, and in a highly compact physical environment.

    Fast touch display.

Inelco Hunter has announced the Powertip STM32 range of touch display modules incorporating a powerful STMicroelectronics MCU chip with an Arm Cortex-M7 480MHz core. The Powertip STM32 modules are aimed at applications where rapid response times and smooth graphics are needed.

The STMicroelectronics MCU provides a very high level of performance, resulting in rapid response times and very smooth graphics. For example, instrumentation products will be able plot graphs quickly and without jitter and support full MJPEG video playback.

Time-to-market is of essence these days and the easy-to-use TouchGFX Plug & Play software will enable developers to define the display’s graphic touch interface very quickly using graphic icons from the supplied library stock. In addition, custom graphic blocks can be quickly generated or Graphics can be uploaded from external sources direct to the system.

Uniquely, Inelco Hunter provide their own BSP (Board Support Package) allowing customers to develop using STM32CubeIDE or KEIL MDK effectively turning the display into a standalone embedded module in its own right.

Screen sizes range from 3.5” to 5” with a high resolution and wide viewing angles - typically 480x272 pixels with an 80° full viewing angle and a brightness of 800+ lumens.

The displays feature Capacitive Touch input technology. Low power consumption is also a key feature - the built-in Chrom-ART accelerator saves processing power and frees up the MCU for other applications where needed. The STM32 modules all feature Embedded 16MB RAM and 32MB QSPI Flash memory, plus a Micro-SD slot for expandable storage. Support is provided for I2C, UART, SPI, USB, RTC, Ethernet and CAN bus.

Developers will no longer need to work on the MCU hardware platform, shortening the development time by many months. Also, the purchasing team will only need to manage one component instead of multiple items like Flash, RAM and MCU. All of which are very unstable at the moment in terms of supply. With IHL lead times of stock to 12 weeks available this offers a quick turn to market solution. Customised solutions can also be provided, including casing options as one example.
