Cyber Resilience in Industry and OT.

A new technical guide explaining the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), aimed at helping businesses understand what the regulation may mean in practice for industrial computing and networking projects has been published.

The new guide, from Impulse Embedded, outlines the purpose of the regulation, the types of products with digital elements it may affect when made available on the EU market, and the key dates businesses should be aware of as the CRA moves closer to full application.

It is aimed at readers involved in specifying, integrating and deploying connected industrial systems, including industrial PCs, embedded computers, industrial networking devices and related hardware. The guide also examines some of the practical issues the CRA may bring into sharper focus, such as product security information, vulnerability handling, support periods, technical documentation and lifecycle planning.

It also considers how IEC 62443-4-2 can support the assessment of industrial hardware in projects with higher cybersecurity expectations. While IEC 62443-4-2 is not the same as CRA conformity, it can provide a useful reference point when reviewing the security characteristics of products during earlier stages of selection.

Its publication comes at a time of growing industry interest in how the CRA may influence product evaluation and supplier expectations across industrial and OT environments, especially where long service lives, remote access requirements and ongoing supportability are important factors.

“The aim of this guide is to give readers a clear, practical introduction to the Cyber Resilience Act in the context of industrial computing and networking,” said Chris Durose, Head of Technology and R&D at Impulse Embedded. “There is a lot of discussion around the regulation, but many businesses are still working out what it may mean for product selection and project planning. We wanted to offer something straightforward, useful and relevant to real industrial applications.”

Smart drive.

With its new DualGear, FAULHABER presents a high-performance drive system which combines tried-and-tested BX4 and GPT technology in a single, well thought-out unit. Developed for the demands of modern conveying systems, the DualGear provides high dynamics, robustness and precision in a compact, diameter-compliant design.

The DualGear drive system has been specifically designed for applications in conveyor belts as well as in compact wheel drives of autonomous logistics systems. Especially in intralogistics environments where space is limited, the system offers a high-performance and economical solution. A particular advantage is its versatility: Two synchronous movements can be realised with one drive. This reduces integration effort significantly, while at the same time optimising installation space and system costs.

Powerful combination of BX4 and GPT Technology.
The new drive system combines two high-performance partners in a compact unit: the powerful and dynamic brushless 32 mm motor from the tried-and-tested BX4 family and two diameter-compliant mounted, robust metal planetary gearheads from the GPT series at both ends of the motor.

The BX4 base motor for the DualGear combination is available in two motor lengths with 42 mm and 68 mm. This allows the drive system to be flexibly adapted to different performance and installation space requirements. Hall sensors with sine/cosine output signals enable precise detection of the rotor position for exact commutation and positioning. In combination with an external motion controller, accurate positioning movement is possible, resulting in a drive system that combines torque and maximum accuracy with a compact design.

In this combination, the GPT planetary gearheads are available with up to three stages, which enables exact dimensioning with respect to speed and torque requirements. The components have only welded joints to ensure reliable and durable construction without the use of adhesives.

Upgrade for Conveying and Intralogistics Systems.
Modern conveying and logistics systems require dynamic, durable and integratable drive solutions. The DualGear meets these requirements thanks to its robust design, high control accuracy and long service life. The possibility of realising two synchronous, powerful movements with just one drive and a central control, creates new approaches for efficient, simple system architectures in the next generation of conveying and intralogistics systems.

Precision meets safety.

Lightweight couplings, safety brakes and intelligent monitoring for test stand technology

Test stand technology for automotive drives is undergoing fundamental change. The rise of e-mobility is profoundly changing test routines, speed profiles and requirement landscapes. What remains unchanged: Precision, reliability and process safety are indispensable in measurement technology. mayr® power transmission presents its coordinated portfolio for test stand technology – from the lightweight coupling ROBA® DS Type 9120, through proven safety brakes, to intelligent monitoring solutions.

Shaft misalignment compensation couplings are essential components in test stands. Based on the proven ROBA® DS steel disk pack coupling, mayr® power transmission offers a weight-optimized aluminum variant with the ROBA® DS Type 9120. Compared to the steel version, the outside diameter is reduced by up to 10 mm; mass and mass moment of inertia are 40% to 60% of the steel version, depending on the design and size – with unchanged performance density.

The development has incorporated extensive knowledge gained over many years in test stand technology, where high speed ranges have previously been the norm. The ROBA® DS 9120 is therefore also suitable for speeds of up to 32,000 rpm. Thanks to its lightweight construction, low mass inertia and high performance density, the aluminum coupling offers measurable advantages. The balance between rigidity and elasticity ensures the lowest possible restoring forces on the system. A balance quality of G 2.5 at 5,000 rpm ensures the necessary smooth running and low-vibration operation – a decisive basis for high measurement accuracy across all speed ranges.

As standard, the coupling features manufacturing tolerance IT6. A nickel-plated surface, disk packs made of stainless steel and galvanized connecting screws provide comprehensive corrosion protection. Backlash-free shaft connections via shrink disk hubs or external shrink disk hubs ensure reproducible measurement results. The coupling is compatible with all common torque transducers as standard.

Thanks to the modular construction system, the ROBA® DS 9120 can be flexibly configured from a variety of connection variants and modules, from high-performance test stands in research and development to end-of-line testing.

Safety brakes for test stands: Reliable protection for people and equipment.
In addition to coupling technology, mayr® power transmission is also presenting its extensive portfolio of safety brakes for test stand applications at Automotive Testing Expo. Test stands for automotive drives frequently include vertical axes and linear movements that must be reliably secured, whether during ongoing test operation, during maintenance work or in the event of a fault.

The ROBA® guidestop® profiled rail brake, for example, acts directly on the moving masses of the vertical axes and clamps them into position in a backlash-free manner and with high rigidity. It is available in hydraulic, pneumatic and electromagnetic designs and is compatible with all common linear guides. The ROBA® linearstop piston rod brake secures linear movements on round rods. It is a safety brake based on the fail-safe principle, meaning it is closed in the de-energized state, and is designed for dynamic emergency braking. The series comprises six sizes with forces ranging from 70 to 17,000 N.

The ROBA-stop M® series also provides a robust motor brake for compact protection directly at the drive motor. As a holding brake, it clamps reliably and holds the system in position; as a dynamic brake, it brings the load to a standstill in the shortest possible time.

The brake speaks: Smart modules for intelligent monitoring.
Constant, meaningful data streams are now indispensable in modern test environments. The ROBA® brake-checker® module monitors safety brakes sensorless and simultaneously supplies them with power. By means of an advanced analysis of current and voltage, it detects the switching condition of the brake and issues a warning before the brake can no longer release under the current operating conditions. This facilitates planned maintenance and enables the user to specifically investigate critical boundary conditions such as supply voltage that is too low, incorrectly dimensioned supply lines, elevated coil temperature and an enlarged air gap.

In combination with the ROBA® gateway module, the solution becomes network-compatible: The brake data can be continuously read out via an Ethernet connection and displayed visually on a dashboard. Anomalies in the test process can be detected at an early stage, maintenance becomes plannable, and downtime can be specifically minimized. Integration into remote maintenance systems is also possible.

Towards the simplification of the complex lives of restoration contractors.

An enhanced integration between Flir's professional-grade iXX-Series thermal imaging cameras and RocketPlan, the leading mobile-first platform for the property restoration industry has been announced. This collaboration embeds high-resolution thermal data directly into digital field workflows, allowing restoration professionals to document moisture damage and structural anomalies with unprecedented speed and precision.

In an industry where "time is money" and documentation is the primary currency of insurance claims; this integration effectively eliminates the traditional bottleneck of manual data entry. By syncing Flir iXX-Series cameras with RocketPlan’s cloud-based ecosystem, thermal imagery is automatically tagged by project, room, and timestamp. This seamless connectivity ensures that every thermal insight captured on-site is immediately useful, rather than being trapped on an SD card or lost in a camera’s internal memory.

Thermal imaging remains the gold standard for detecting hidden moisture and insulation failures, yet the manual transfer of files from camera to report often leads to data silos and administrative delays.

"Restoration professionals require more than just a great image; they need that image to be actionable and defensible," said Heliel Morales, Director of Global Business Development . "By integrating Flir’s industry-leading thermal clarity directly into the RocketPlan workflow, we are helping firms reduce administrative overhead and provide the transparent, high-quality documentation that insurance adjusters demand."

The benefits of this integration extend beyond the field technician to the entire restoration business. Images captured via the iXX-Series, Flir ONE and Flir Edge are instantly synced to the specific job file, which removes the risk of lost or mislabeled data. Technicians can then overlay this thermal data with floor plans, moisture readings, and time-tracking within a single mobile interface. This level of transparency allows office teams to share standardized, professional reports with insurance partners in real-time, significantly accelerating claim approvals and project completion.

"Our mission is to simplify the complex lives of restoration contractors," added Joe Tolzmann, CEO of RocketPlan. "Partnering with Flir allows our users to capture critical thermal insights and organize them instantly. It’s about moving from the assessment phase to the mitigation phase faster than ever before."

While the Flir iXX-Series offers the ruggedness and resolution required for large-scale loss, the RocketPlan integration also supports the Flir ONE® Series, Flir Edge®, and the Flir MR277 moisture meter with IGM™. This ensures that every member of a restoration crew, from the lead estimator to the technician, has access to the tools they need on a single platform. The integrated solution is available now for RocketPlan subscribers and Flir users.

Volatile organic compound emissions control.

A leading coatings manufacturer in Wales has installed an advanced online gas analysis system to monitor emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), enabling the company to leverage real-time data for measurable environmental, operational and compliance benefits.

ProAmpac Advanced Coatings, which has operated in Wrexham for more than 50 years, invested in a new Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) in 2025. The RTO destroys VOCs, air pollutants and odours through high‑temperature oxidation and is continuously monitored using a Signal Group VOC analyser to optimise performance, provide early warnings and support regulatory compliance.

Dan Hitchcock, Project Manager at ProAmpac says “We see the analyser as essential. Real‑time data supports effective process control and allows us to verify that emissions are being correctly abated. That gives us confidence that we will meet emissions limits when regulatory testing is carried out.”

Long‑standing commitment to emissions control.
ProAmpac Advanced Coatings (PAC) is a global supplier of precision coating materials, including coated papers, films and specialist substrates for applications such as digital imaging, electronics, medical and optical technologies. Its manufacturing processes involve the use of solvents, making robust emissions control essential.

As a Part A2 installation, the Wrexham site has long operated an on‑site thermal oxidiser to protect the environment and meet the requirements of an environmental permit issued by the local council. Historically, the permit has included emission limit values (ELVs) for pollutants such as Total Organic Carbon (VOCs), carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. These emissions are checked during annual visits by an MCERTS‑accredited contractor. In addition to periodic compliance testing, PAC has continuously monitored post‑combustion VOC emissions for over 20 years using a Signal Group analyser employing a flame ionisation detector (FID), the reference method for VOC measurement. The original analyser remained in operation for approximately two decades.

Investing ahead of regulatory change.
Installed in 1995, the original RTO was approaching the end of its service life after 30 years of continuous operation, with ageing ceramic beds requiring increasing maintenance. At the same time, emissions regulations affecting solvent‑based coating processes were becoming more stringent. Updates to the Best Available Technique (BAT) Reference Document for Surface Treatment using Organic Solvents (STS BREF) introduced lower emission limits for applicable installations, prompting the local council to begin drafting a revised permit for the site.

“In that context, relying solely on periodic testing would not give us the level of operational visibility we need,” Dan Hitchcock (pictured right) explains. “Continuous monitoring allows us to manage performance proactively rather than retrospectively.” With an ageing RTO, and with the prospect of tighter regulations, PAC chose to install a new, more efficient RTO with a capacity of up to 150,000 Nm³/hour, commissioned in 2025.

Real‑time data, real‑world benefits.
PAC continues to operate continuous VOC monitoring alongside statutory compliance testing. Dan Hitchcock, who has worked at the Wrexham site since 1992, says real‑time data is critical to effective control of both coating processes and the RTO. “The analyser helps us optimise oxidiser performance, manage emissions from the coating lines, and control fuel input.” he says. “Any issue with the RTO could have serious consequences, so early detection is vital.”

An integrated monitoring and alarm system provides management staff with real‑time displays, historical data and automated alerts. The system also confirms correct operation and calibration of both the analyser and the heated sample line.

Seán O’Brien, Health, Safety and Environment Manager at the site, adds: “Continuous VOC monitoring allows us to identify potential problems early and address them before they escalate. It gives us confidence that compliance monitoring will demonstrate performance that meets permit requirements, while providing additional reassurance to the regulator.”

Proven performance from Signal Group.
Following more than 20 years of reliable service from its first Signal Group analyser, PAC selected Signal once again when upgrading its monitoring system for the new RTO. The original instrument has been replaced with an MCERTS‑approved SOLAR CEMNEX continuous FID analyser, installed at the base of the RTO exhaust stack. Signal Group also supplied the heated sample line. As an MCERTS‑certified system, the analyser’s data are accepted by regulators including local councils, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA and the Environment Agency.

The system is supported by daily automatic zero checks, periodic span checks using calibration gas, and comprehensive on‑site servicing every six months under a long‑term maintenance agreement with Signal Group.

Summary.
Regenerative thermal oxidisers are designed for continuous operation, and any interruption to their operation would also increase the cost of recreating sufficiently high temperatures within the RTO. Also, thermal cycling can cause mechanical stress, increase energy consumption and damage ceramic media affecting the performance of the RTO. At the Wrexham site, where production schedules vary daily, continuous monitoring is critical for providing assurance that the RTO is performing well and for

Cooling fans.

The "DiaForce Diagonal" range of cooling fans from EBM-Papst is now available through Inelco Hunter. The revolutionary design incorporates a unique geometry of the impeller and housing: a conical cover plate that rotates with it, whilst the intake opening is smaller than the outlet opening, thus creating a larger pressure increase.

In terms of its characteristics, the DiaForce lies between an axial and a centrifugal fan. The DiaForce is quieter thanks to aerodynamic optimisation - the blade tips pass directly into the cover plate. As a result, there is no tip gap and therefore hardly any turbulence in the gap area, where there is a significant pressure gradient. It is this specific design that results in a significant reduction in noise.

The air flows through the fan in both axial and radial directions, enabling a high-pressure increase. It retains an axial design, making it easy to install. Compared to a conventional single-stage axial compact fan, the results are impressive: up to 50% more air performance and up to 6 dB(A) lower sound level. In the context of a typical application, the result is greater performance without compromise. System performance can be enhanced while still satisfying all standards, such as NEBS, OSHA, ANSI and ETSI.

The DiaForce is a complete system consisting of a high-performance DC motor, optimised aerodynamics and intelligent control electronics. Systems that process huge amounts of data are becoming increasingly powerful, and cooling is becoming a challenge in a variety of industries, such as automation, 5G telecommunications, autonomous driving and AI. The DiaForce’s performance is “future-proof” in that it will be able to meet the needs of future applications. Enhanced reliability is another proven benefit - the DiaForce’s power reserves can be used to create redundancy. If, for example the temperature increases, simply increase the speed. This is not possible with conventional single-stage cooling fans because they have to be operated at the power limit even during normal operation.

As an optional extra, the new FanCheck diagnostic tool can be added to the DiaForce. This is integrated into the fan electronics and calculates the realistic service life of the fan based on temperature, speed and preset environmental parameters. This means the fan can stay in operation for longer without any loss of reliability, which saves on costs and protects the environment. The overall dimensions are a very compact 119mm x 119mm x 89mm deep, and mounting is carried out using eight industry-standard mounting holes. It is powered by a 48VDC input and can provide a flow rate of up to 680m3 per hour.

Inelco Hunter works with EBM-Papst to provide a Higher-Level Assembly Service, which enables fan design customisation.

60 years of connectivity and connections.

Built on the principle of establishing direct personal relationships with customers

F C Lane Electronics is celebrating 60 years of trading since their foundation on 12th of April 1966. The company was established by the much-respected Fred Lane (1931-2024), who had previously been running a division of an electronic components business dealing in a variety of device types and selling across the Britain as well as to several overseas markets.

One of the primary reasons why FC Lane has been so successful for so long was Fred Lane’s original vision to specialise in just one type of component - the connector.

Time has shown this to be a wise decision as connectors are an essential part of almost every electronic product or system manufactured. As the electronics industry rapidly evolved throughout the decades that followed, the connector industry developed newer, more sophisticated, and smaller products to keep pace with and help the industry’s development process. From day one, Fred Lane ensured his company remained at the forefront of interconnection technology.

Starting life in outbuildings behind a public house provided few clues to how they would develop into the multi-million-pound operation it is today. But, as any good businessman knows, careful planning from day one allows a business to spend valuable resources on the right things – people and products. This is a philosophy that Fred Lane followed throughout his personal leadership, and which today sees FC Lane Electronics employ 70 people with a finished product and parts inventory level approaching nine million pounds.

The company quickly expanded into premises in the centre of Horsham in a building due for short-term redevelopment before finding its eventual home - Slinfold Lodge. Combining traditional office environments with modern assembly and test facilities, Slinfold Lodge itself, is an imposing country house set in its own grounds and is surrounded by a golf course. Slinfold Lodge remains to this day the headquarters for FC Lane Electronics and its sister connector manufacturing company, Weald Electronics.

Nick Wheeler, Sales Director of Lane Electronics, says, “Our success continues Fred Lane’s principle of building direct personal relationships with our customers, offering a wide range of products, high levels of customer service and supply adaptability, adding value to our customer’s supply chains. We have very long-standing relationships with our suppliers, such as that of our forty years of working with EATON Souriau, which reflects our deep knowledge and experience of the connector market” .

Lane Electronics connectivity solutions include RF and Fibre-Optic connector and cable assemblies, widely used in defence and security applications, and is a franchised distributor for many of the industry’s leading electrical and electronic connector manufacturers including EATON Souriau, CINCH Fibreco, HUBER+SUHNER, HellermannTyton, Positronic, Nicomatic and LEMO.

Backed by a strong commitment to quality, reliability and traceability procedures Lane Electronics also hold a significant number of key approvals. Next day delivery is available on more than 90% of standard products while, for non-standard products, rapid in-house development, assembly and testing of specialist military, industrial and motorsport circular connectors is available lead times which are generally much quicker than those offered by other connector suppliers.

Suppression of unwanted signals.

EMI Filter for high-field MRI systems and sensitive imaging processes.

The MF420-2CF-M MRI Filter, from EMIS, is a specialised electrical filter for use in Magnetic Resonance Imaging rooms to block unwanted electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) from entering or leaving the MRI environment.

Designing or selecting an EMI filter for high-field MRI systems is very different from general electronics filtering as MRI environments are extremely sensitive to RF noise and require shielded-room integrity as well ultra-high attenuation across wide frequency bands.

EMI filters are critical in MRI High-field systems which operate with very low-level RF signals in an environment featuring strong static magnetic fields. External EMI contamination can degrade signal-to-noise ratio, create artifacts in images and cause regulatory non-compliance. Even cables entering the MRI room can act as antennas and leak noise into the shielded enclosure.

MRI EMC filters provide strong suppression of unwanted signals over a wide frequency range up to 10GHz, preventing external noise from affecting MRI signals and ensuring high-quality diagnostic images. These filters are typically installed at the point where power lines or signal cables enter an MRI shielded room, for example:
1. Power line filters - Main AC supply (single/three-phase), Gradient amplifiers, RF amplifiers.
2. Signal line filters - Ethernet / data lines, patient monitoring systems, fire alarms, intercoms, sensors.

MRI filters are specially designed to meet the strict performance requirements of equipment manufacturers and ensure compatibility with high-field MRI systems and sensitive imaging processes. The filter components are enclosed in a shielded and sealed metallic housing that protects against dust, moisture, and corrosion ensuring long-lasting performance.

Key features include:

  • Connection via threaded conduit and flexible wire leads, allowing fast and secure installation in shielded MRI rooms.
  • Designed with an internal discharge bleeder resistor that safely discharges stored electrical energy when power is turned off, reducing the risk of electric shock during maintenance.
  • Designed with low leakage current, ensuring patient safety by minimising unintended current flow.
