Datacentre sustainability.

A novel sensor system has been developed to help datacentres optimise the energy efficiency and sustainability of their operations.

Anu Kätkä from Vaisala (right) describes the development of a modular daisy-chain temperature/humidity sensor configuration, which has dramatically reduced cabling requirements and lowered the carbon footprint of building management systems (BMS).

Background.
The global demand for datacentres is being driven by cloud-based services, AI, automation and digitisation. These data handling facilities house large amounts of IT infrastructure and require high levels of power to run the equipment and to cool it. The latest servers are more energy efficient and able to operate at higher temperatures. As major consumers of power and land, data centre operators have an undeniable responsibility to aggressively reduce emissions and lessen environmental impacts wherever possible. In addition, datacentres frequently contain critically important data, and it is not uncommon for 99.999% uptime to be a requirement. The monitoring and control requirements are therefore comprehensive and stringent.

Partners in innovation.
Vantage Data Centres powers, cools, protects and connects the technology of the world’s well-known hyperscalers, cloud providers and large enterprises. Developing and operating across five continents in North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific, Vantage has evolved data centre design in innovative ways to deliver dramatic gains in reliability, efficiency and sustainability in flexible environments that can scale as quickly as the market demands.

Vaisala’s development project was initially prompted by the sustainability requirements of the new Vantage campuses. “We are constantly looking for ways to improve both the efficiency and sustainability of our datacentres,” explains Eugenio Lukianov, Principal Automation Manager, EMEA, Vantage Data centres. “Due to their accuracy and reliability, Vaisala sensors are frequently specified in the requirements of our new or refurbished datacentres worldwide. Many of our facilities are large, and the sensor cabling requirement can be enormous, so we were keen to find a better solution.”

Engineers from Vaisala and Vantage found that the amount of cabling required at datacentres could be significantly reduced if the sensors could be re-designed to be daisy-chained, rather than each having their own individual cable. A sensor development project therefore progressed with this as its key objective, but additional benefits were also realised by the new sensor solution. “In order to facilitate the daisy-chain, it was necessary for the sensors to be ‘plug and play’ which made installation so much easier,” Eugenio says. “The sensor cables are initially coiled in the roof space, and then, once the servers are installed, the sensors are simply dropped into place. This modular approach also simplifies ongoing maintenance because any damaged sensors or cables can be quickly and easily swapped out.”

The cable reduction potential of the daisy-chain solution is very significant. For example, a single 100m datacentre aisle, with 30 instruments at 3m spacing, each with a dedicated cable and a 3m cable drop would require about 1695 metres of cable, which is more than a mile of cable! In contrast, if the same aisle is equipped with the daisy-chain solution, the cabling drops to just 187 metres, representing an 89% drop in carbon footprint.

Environmental measurements at Vantage Data Centres.
One of the key measures of sustainability at datacentres is power usage effectiveness (PUE), which is derived by dividing total power consumption by the power used to operate the IT equipment. So, the more efficient the datacentre, the lower the PUE, and Eugenio says: “This is an important metric for us - we continuously create downward pressure on this figure with accurate measurements and tight control of the cooling operations.”

The sensor daisy-chains at Vantage transmit data to the Vantage servers, and the ongoing accuracy of the measurements is essential for the efficiency of cooling. Vaisala sensors are also deployed outside the building, so that outdoor air can be utilised by economisation to reduce the energy required for cooling and thereby lower the PUE.

In addition to the critical areas of the Vantage datacentres, Vaisala sensors are also located in non-critical rooms such as storage areas and offices, providing data for normal HVAC control.

At Vaisala, we believe that by specifying our measurement technologies, datacentre customers can ensure that the efficiency of their cooling operations is underpinned by accurate data. However, at Vantage, Eugenio believes that the benefits extend beyond long-term accuracy and energy efficiency. “The modularity of the daisy-chain saves time and money during installation and maintenance, and with our partners and system integrators utilising Vaisala technology, we have been able to reduce the volume of spares and training that are required.”

The daisy chain systems have now been installed for up to two years in British campuses, and Eugenio says: “We are very pleased with the way that Vaisala responded to our request, working collaboratively with us to develop the daisy-chain solution.” Reflecting on performance to-date, he adds: “So far, the accuracy has been very good and there have been no complaints from our operational teams.”

Looking forward, Eugenio says: “The number of organisations looking to use datacentres is constantly expanding, and all of them want to secure a minimum 5-year capacity, so the sector is set for even more growth. We will therefore ensure that more sites benefit from the sensor daisy-chain solution, as our business further embraces sustainability.”

GxP monitoring, superior data security, and simplified scalability.
viewLinc Cloud is specifically designed for validated applications in the GxP space and enables improved scalability and efficiency by removing the need for a heavy, local, and limited IT infrastructure.

“Currently, there is a trend in life sciences where companies are moving their on-premises, resource-intensive IT infrastructure to the cloud or are aiming to do so in the next few years. By choosing a cloud-based system, our customers reduce the need for internal IT resources and can focus on their core business. viewLinc Cloud allows Vaisala to deploy the software on a secure cloud server and manage maintenance activities, including scheduled software updates,” says Steven Bell, Product Manager at Vaisala.

At a facility monitored by viewLinc Cloud Standard, data loggers installed on-site record the temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels, and the encrypted data is then transmitted via Vaisala’s proprietary VaiNet wireless protocol to viewLinc’s database in the cloud. The system’s users, such as laboratory technicians and quality managers, can easily view the data via any standard web browser. If the viewLinc Cloud system detects any deviation from the permitted measurements, it automatically alerts personnel.

“For life science operations, data integrity and system security are not optional – they are a must. viewLinc Cloud was designed with these as the top priority. All data is recorded redundantly and encrypted, including data stored locally in the data logger, in transit to the cloud server and when stored in the secure cloud database. System data cannot be altered, and configuration changes are tracked in the secure audit trail. viewLinc Cloud also provides multi-factor authentication and granular user rights based on roles to provide system controls required by regulations,” explains Bell.

Security management certification.

Sensirion Connected Solutions has successfully obtained the ISO 27001 certification, the internationally recognized standard for information security management systems (ISMS).

The company, by achieving the ISO 27001 certification, the company demonstrates its commitment to protecting the data of its customers, partners and employees, as well as complying with all relevant laws and regulations. The certification also validates the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s security processes and controls.

Two innovative solutions are offered for the industrial sector: AiSight and Nubo Sphere. AiSight is a cloud-based platform that uses advanced analytics to provide actionable insights for predictive maintenance. Nubo Sphere is a continuous emissions monitoring solution that uses advanced sensor technology and algorithms to detect, localize and quantify methane emissions from oil and gas facilities.

Both solutions require a high level of data security and reliability, as they deal with sensitive and critical information. By obtaining the ISO 27001 certification, Sensirion assures its customers that their data is handled with the utmost care and respect, and that the company follows the highest security standards. This is part of Sensirion Connected Solutions dedication towards the highest quality standards for its solutions and services, as already shown with its ISO 9001 certified production facilities.

Felix Hoehne, General Manager at Sensirion Connected Solutions says: “I’m delighted to share this achievement with our global stakeholders. It underscores our goal to deliver high quality and secure solutions for the energy and industrial sector. I would like to thank our dedicated team for their hard work and contribution to this milestone”.

Difference between ISO 27001 and SOC 2 The ISO 27001 certification is different from the SOC 2 attestation, which is a common security framework in the US market. While both frameworks aim to ensure data security, they have slightly different scopes and approaches.

The ISO 27001 certification covers the entire ISMS of an organization, while the SOC 2 attestation focuses on specific security controls relevant to the services provided by an organization. The ISO 27001 certification is more rigorous and comprehensive, as it requires an organization to implement and maintain an ISMS that meets the universal standards for every industry and geographic location. The SOC 2 attestation is more flexible and tailored, as it allows an organization to choose the security controls that suit its individual industry standards and needs. Both frameworks are valuable and respected in the market, but the ISO 27001 certification is more widely recognized and accepted internationally.

Knowing an asset’s health increases the equipment’s reliability and reduces the risk of downtime because maintenance can be scheduled based on a transformer’s actual need. Companies can assess short and long-term risks with recommendations based on industry standards.

• Safety:
Detecting early signs of potential problems improves overall transformer safety.

• Data-driven decision making:
Using real-time data makes it possible to make more informed decisions about maintenance and asset replacement.

• Economic benefits:
Extending asset life expectancy reduces the need for costly replacements, improving maintenance planning reduces maintenance codes, and reducing downtime saves money.

oOo

EcoStruxure Transformer Expert in action at CERN.
CERN, one of the world’s largest centres for scientific research, adopted EcoStruxure Transformer Expert to improve the monitoring, risk assessment, and asset management of eight transformers. CERN, which uses 1.3 terawatt hours of electricity annually, needed a solution that could predict the remaining life of its aging transformers to facilitate smooth replacements, and prioritise upgrade decisions. EcoStruxure Transformer Expert is enabling CERN to maintain these critical assets and plan to replace them with minimal risk to operations.

David Pownall, Vice President, Services, Schneider Electric UK and Ireland: "We’re proud to be working together with CERN to successfully solve their transformer challenges. The project is a real-world example of our solution and shows how our collaboration with customers can solve their specific challenges. Extending equipment’s lifespan is an important way to decrease companies’ carbon footprint. Using EcoStruxure Transformer Expert, companies can maximise transformers’ lifespan, resulting in less waste.”

Extending transformers monitoring solution portfolio for higher flexibility.
Schneider Electric is offering the monitoring services as a software-as-a-service model, and a software-only offer for monitoring transformer fleets. This is where customers can upload and store their offline dissolved-gas analysis (DGA) reports and get initial insights and analytics about their transformers and prioritise high-risk equipment for closer monitoring and replacement planning, if needed. They are also offering the option to integrate it into an EcoCare membership: Schneider will perform advanced condition-based monitoring for the customer and provide insights to improve transformers performance, as well as core electrical distribution equipment in a customer’s installation.

Access to centralised device management.

When searching for a component in Eplan eStock, the system display potential hits in the Eplan Data Portal.

Eplan eStock – the cloud-based device management system on the Eplan Platform – lets users manage and maintain device data right in a browser, including voltages, currents, data sheets and component designations. They have already had access to the data stored there since Version 2023. This all makes collaboration easier and reduces coordination times and media discontinuities. The data is thus more consistent and of higher quality – after all, there is no need for multiple data entry. This is also reflected in the project quality while taking into account all the required standards.
Eplan eStock gives companies access to centralised device man-agement in the Eplan Cloud, simplifying colla-boration and reducing coordination times and media discontinuities. Working with eStock has become even easier in the Eplan Platform 2024, meaning that users can automatically and quickly access the full range of more than 1.5 million device datasets in the Eplan Data Portal. Another benefit is that all the data – from a company’s in-house device manage-ment system or from the Data Portal – can be edited together and saved via user rights management.

New: Eplan Data Portal integration.
Now a few crucial innovations have been added: devices can be imported from the Eplan Data Portal into eStock. When making the first keystrokes for the entry, users see all devices in their own database in addition to all the relevant devices for the search in the Eplan Data Portal. Users can then open the desired device in the same window and, in case it hasn’t been already, import it with one or two clicks. When items are transferred from the Data Portal into Eplan eStock, the software initially created a draft version – meaning that previously approved device data isn’t automatically “overwritten” but the saving must instead be actively confirmed – i.e., accepted – by the user. Users can thus add data and/or make changes to the draft version before approving it and actually using the device in a project.

Eplan Platform 2024 – faster data access.
Another practical benefit is that users have access to more than 1.5 million device datasets in eStock with the new direct integration to the Eplan Data Portal. Component manufacturers involved in the Data Portal upload new and/or updated data on an ongoing basis and the pool of device data is continually growing. Eplan’s developers have also paid attention to efficiency when using data from the cloud and the system only downloads data changes to a local computer based on the last time it accessed eStock, considerably speeding up data access. Another performance gain also benefits users – in the Eplan Platform 2024, it is quick and easy to switch between the source of a local database and an eStock collection based in the Eplan Cloud. This also offers users considered time savings and even greater ease of use.

Better cross-departmental collaboration.
Eplan eStock, the centralised device data management system in the cloud, simplifies collaboration. Data sovereignty always lies with the company or the user, who determine the quality and level of access themselves. Standards can be easily and comprehensively implemented via rights management. Access to the centralised device management in the cloud is available to Eplan users with a subscription licence for the Eplan Platform 2023 at no additional cost.
