Prioritising arc flash safety.

A range of thermal imaging and wireless testing tools designed to ensure safety is the top priority for engineers working in potentially dangerous arc flash zones has been developed by Fluke.

Every company’s electrical safety strategy should be based around limiting workers’ exposure to such electrical hazards as arc flash and electrocution. Fluke says the best way to keep operators out of harm’s way is to give them access to the right non-contact tools that not only protect them but also reduce dramatically (by up to half) the amount of time they are required to work on live circuits in arc flash zones.

Arc flash is the light and heat created from an arc fault explosion and temperatures can reach up to 19,000°C (35,000°F), capable of igniting an operator’s clothing and burning the skin of anyone within a few feet. Arc flash can also melt metal, cause lung and eyesight damage and lead to hospitalisation, even death.

Engineers and health & safety teams will be familiar with the need to establish arc flash boundaries and wear arc-rated clothing and rubber insulating gloves. However, using non-contact test and measurement tools means operators are able to minimise the level of personal protective equipment (PPE) required as well as the amount of time they need to spend inside the boundary.

One such product is Fluke’s PQ400 electrical measurement window (EMW), which is permanently installed into cabinets with voltage and current connections made inside the panel. The PQ400 gives workers access to critical power quality and energy data while decreasing testing time and maintaining a high level of safety. Users can plug their power quality tools directly into the EMW to collect all the data that’s needed.

As well as the safety aspects, advantages of using the PQ400 include lower maintenance costs and reduced downtime by being able to make critical power quality and energy measurements without opening the panel door. The EMW also enables logging and monitoring to be done at any time, without disrupting operations, while measurement efficiency is increased.

A second product – Fluke’s CV400 ClirVu 4in window – is a permanent infra-red window that provides a view of what’s on the other side of a panel without workers being exposed to live voltage or needing full PPE. Offering the most visibility into a panel for a thermal camera (simplifying the inspection process by allowing measurements to be taken without having to open a cabinet), the widest Fluke window option available also helps to reduce time and costs involved in preventive maintenance.

TiS75+
Likewise, Fluke’s TiS75+ thermal camera enables operators to capture and measure heat energy emanating from a source without having to make physical contact, meaning they can see instantly what’s running too hot or too cold before anything breaks down. Offering one-handed image capture, review and save facilities, the camera not only helps operators to keep a safe distance from an arc flash boundary but also allows them to compare thermal scans over time using the Fluke Connect app.

376FC
A fourth product – the Fluke 376 FC clamp meter – makes it possible to set up measurements and transmit the data from inside the arc flash boundary, meaning someone within 20m of the equipment is able to open the Fluke Connect app and read the figures from outside the boundary. As well as reducing the time technicians spend in the arc flash boundary, the clamp meter helps them to log, trend and monitor measurements remotely so they can pinpoint intermittent faults.

Finally, the Fluke 3000FC digital multimeter is a flexible DMM allowing users to read results through the Fluke Connect app, outside the arc flash boundary. Using this equipment cuts the time technicians spend inside the boundary and offers them an easy-to-read display with large digits and bright backlight.

Says Eric van Riet: “There’s no need for engineers to put themselves in an arc blast zone if they can avoid being there. Products such as wireless and non-contact tools as well as remote displays can help place them as far away as possible from risk and danger while allowing them to take accurate, instant readings that can be analysed remotely. Arc flash safety is essential, and the latest thermal imaging and wireless testing tools are the best way to offer operators maximum protection.”

Upgrade to precision acoustic imagers.

Fluke has added a unique new feature to its ii910 precision acoustic imagers to help users identify and localise ‘mechanical areas of interest’ within short timeframes. The Firmware 5.0 update brings a MecQ facility to the ii910 which helps to minimise unplanned downtime and cut repair costs by enabling early identification of potential mechanical problems. Energy savings are also achieved by being able to carry out repairs early and reduce faults.

The update was developed following extensive research involving Fluke customers around the world in which maintenance specialists and technicians said their key focus was identifying issues as early as possible on the potential failure curve. Looking at various types of conveyor systems, the research showed that non-driven bearings are often the root cause of many mechanical faults. Because these systems are integral to the overall production process, lengthy periods of downtime could have a high impact in the factory and cause major issues along the supply chain. This applies in food and beverage production as much as it does in the logistics, electronics, automotive and mining/raw materials sectors.

Never inspected.
Despite a line going down representing a huge concern (and costing anything up to $130,000 an hour), Fluke found that around 59% of conveyor belt systems are never inspected while another 11% are checked manually. The research showed that the least effective way of detecting a problem was human sensing followed by contact temperature and thermography. Testing using contact vibration or airborne ultrasound also represented a challenge – with ease of use being a significant issue with the latter – but acoustic imaging was found to offer the most effective method of all.

Not only did customers say that the ability to localise issues was vital if substantial cost savings were to be achieved but they also needed a scalable solution that could help those with lengthy conveyor systems (a major warehouse could operate up to 80km of conveyor belts) or where accessibility was an issue (perhaps because of conveyor guards). Using the Fluke ii910 acoustic imager with MecQ, the process of carrying out non-contact inspection on conveyor systems is simplified considerably, with the unit identifying immediately through sound pattern comparison the locality of a mechanical area of interest. Once the issue is displayed on-screen the maintenance professional can make a note of it, share it with their team and address it on their maintenance schedule.

User-selectable frequencies.
MecQ was developed to bring an extra layer of detection to the ii910 in addition to taking a picture, taking a video, carrying out leak detection with LeakQ and partial discharge detection in PDQ mode.

Although the most common frequency for ultrasound instruments is 30kHz, the ii910 with MecQ now offers user-selectable frequencies from 2kHz to 100kHz and fixed multi-mode frequency bands of 15kHz, 20kHz, 30kHz, 40kHz and 60kHz to check various stages of bearing deterioration. Depending on the environment, the user can choose whether to turn these pre-set frequency bands on or off.

Tako Feron of Fluke says: “Any member of a maintenance team will love the ease-of-use the new MecQ facility provides with its intuitive interface and seamless integration with existing leak and partial discharge detection tools. They will also appreciate the ability to boost efficiency, maximise uptime (by reducing meantime-to-repair) and lower costs while ensuring high safety levels through contactless inspection and the elimination of hazardous situations. Thanks to MecQ, the ii910 now enables maintenance engineers to locate a problem, annotate a screenshot, share that with the team and then schedule repairs during planned downtime. Having all these workflow enablement solutions built into a single tool is not only unique to Fluke but the Firmware 5.0 upgrade has also simplified what could ordinarily be a highly complex and time-consuming inspection and maintenance operation.”

Feron adds: “It is important to remember that the ii910 with MecQ is designed to offer a first line scanning solution that identifies an area of interest at scale for follow-up inspection.”

Trusted testing for Industrial Ethernet installation and maintenance.

Combining advanced cable performance technology with features to solve network connectivity problems.

The LinkIQ Cable+Network Industrial Ethernet Tester (LinkIQ-IE) has been launched by Fluke Networks. The tester is designed to verify cable performance up to 10 Gb/s, and solves network connectivity problems, identifying connected switch, port and VLAN data, optionally running targeted ‘ping’ tests, and confirming the presence and capacity of available PoE. The continued rise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) means that there is a growing need for easy-to-use tools for fast and effective troubleshooting. By combining Fluke Networks’ state-of-the-art cable measurement technology and a range of network connectivity tests, the LinkIQ-IE speeds the discovery of network failures.

Increase in industrial Ethernet use - Around 70 per cent of all newly installed factory automation nodes employ industrial Ethernet. Installation technicians must be able to verify cabling performance to ensure network performance, they also need to ensure that the user’s traffic can reach its destination.

Simplifies troubleshooting - A large percentage of industrial Ethernet service calls result from cabling-related issues. “Troubleshooting industrial Ethernet problems often involves the use of complex tools such as protocol analysers or trial-and-error approaches such as running bypass cable in the hope of solving the problem,” said Robert Luijten, Training Manager of Fluke. “We designed the LinkIQ-IE to provide answers to key troubleshooting questions in seconds through an easy-to-use gesture-based interface, all at a price that puts it in the reach of factory maintenance teams.”

“The LinkIQ-IE fulfils a need for data communications troubleshooting and is the ideal tool for maintenance engineers to eliminate cabling issues quickly,” says Jaap Westeneng of Endress+Hauser, instrumentation specialists for industrial automation. “It can also give you an indication of the transmission speed the cable is capable of handling, which differentiates the LinkIQ from other twisted pair testers. It is intuitive and easy to use and responsive. As a visitor to industrial settings to undertake troubleshooting, being able to compile a report via the industry-standard LinkWare™ PC Reporting Software is extremely valuable.”

The instrument simplifies the operator experience through providing a single TEST function with results automatically displayed based on what the unit is connected to. The unit provides adapters for the most common industrial Ethernet connectors simplifying connection.

Key features of the LinkIQ include:
• Network testing – users can verify connectivity and response time to key network devices with one touch of the screen. LinkIQ-IE can be configured to perform IPv4 or v6 ping tests and will display the response time for four pings to a target device of the user’s choosing. The test results display the DNS and DHCP servers and the gateway router. LinkIQ-IE also displays the IP address of the nearest switch.
• Two-pair cable tests – Cable performance tests up to 100 Mb/s can be specified for two-pair cables, widely used in industrial environments.
• Open cable attached - the wire map and length of each pair is displayed.
• Supplied remote ID attached to cable end - performance up to 10Gb/s is indicated.
• Additional remote ID units can be purchased (up to 6) and connected to patch panels - the LinkIQ-IE can display the Remote ID number making it easy for technicians to determine where a link is going.
• Cable is connected to a switch port - LinkIQ-IE will show the name of the switch plus the VLAN, port name, speed, and duplex.
• If PoE is advertised, it will display the power and class (up to 90 W or Class 8) and then load the switch to verify the power can be delivered.
• Language support – The LinkIQ user interface now supports 12 languages.
• Reporting – A new version of the LinkWare™ PC software, the industry's de facto reporting solution, is also available. This new version provides reports including the expanded network testing, allowing users to document their work.

Acoustic Imager cuts costs, reduces waste and improves pipeline.

Air Liquide, the multi-national company supplying industrial gases and services to the health and industrial sectors has cut costs, reduced waste and boosted the efficiency of pipelines in Italy through the use of advanced ultrasonic measurement devices from Fluke.

The company has benefited from the ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager, designed by Fluke to make it easier, faster and safer to carry out high-sensitivity detection of gas, corona and partial discharge (PD). Suitable for use by operators with minimal training, the point-and-shoot device can also detect compressed air, gas and vacuum leaks, making it ideal for detecting leaks in gas distribution systems.

“Because our Syracuse refinery operates on a 24-hour basis, avoiding downtime is essential," said Sebastiano Carpinteri, Process Engineer at Air Liquide Priolo. "That means tests for leaks must be carried out as easily as possible and results analysed in the shortest time. Using Fluke’s ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager, measurements over the entire pipeline can now be assessed from a static position by just one person. The intuitive device clearly identifies leakages, enables measurements to be carried out without any kind of infrastructure required and makes it easy to produce up-to-date and accurate reports on the locations of leaks.”

Strong sustainability agenda to drive energy efficiency.
Driven by a strong sustainability agenda, Air Liquide wanted to increase energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint by tackling costly leaks of air and nitrogen at its dual mixed refrigerant (DMR) refinery in Syracuse (I). The company chose to carry out measurements every two years on all pipelines around the refinery – 7,000m for compressed air and 9,435m for nitrogen – as well as 5km of interconnecting pipelines. Leak detection and repair (LDAR) checks are also required every 12 months by Italy’s environmental regulator ISPRA.

With a frequency range of 2kHz to 100kHz and 64 digital MEMS microphones, the ii910 makes it possible to locate leaks rapidly, detecting a 0.005 cubic feet per minute (CFM) leak at 100PSI from up to 32.8 feet (a 2.5cm3/sec leak at 7 bar from up to 10m). The acoustic imager also incorporates a 1280 x 800 resolution (1,024,000 pixels) LCD display and offers a battery life of more than six hours in the field. Finally, by eliminating the need for secondary cables or other devices, the ii910 gives operators the ability to swap easily between detecting the leak or PD and fixing them.

Several leaks rapidly identified.
Air Liquide called on the services of Belgium-based Intero – The Sniffers who carried out all the required measurements using the ii910 acoustic imager. Thanks to highly sensitive sensors on the device that work with Fluke’s SoundSight technology, the imager’s ultrasonic signals quickly revealed several leaks on the refinery’s air pipeline and multiple leaks on the nitrogen system. This enabled Air Liquide’s engineers to take immediate action to minimise the leaks and achieve instant efficiency gains.

Top tools and technologies.

Rising energy costs and more stringent legislation guiding sustainable practices is spurring companies to re-evaluate processes and seek new tools and technologies to reduce waste and overcome challenges in today’s industrial environments.

The top three trends that are enhancing operational efficiency in today’s industrial environments are highlighted by Fluke. Challenges posed to industrial operations managers by the pandemic have now been superseded by the rising cost of energy, and the need to deliver on net zero ambitions. As the price of energy continues to increase, the need to reduce costs and deliver on shared sustainability goals intensifies for small-to-medium sized enterprises through to large corporations.

Paul Feenstra, Vice President Fluke EMEA, at Fluke said: “We are working together with our customers to help drive new initiatives to improve operations, increase efficiencies, and take reliability to a new level in the 21st century.”

1 Reducing energy costs with upgraded technology and cloud-based data monitoring.
Approximately 90% of all companies use compressed air in some aspect of their operation, such that it is often referred to as the fourth utility. Recent developments in industrial acoustic imaging technology have enabled the fast identification of leaks in compressed air systems used in industrial and manufacturing environments. Fluke’s ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager features an array of microphones, providing visualisation of sound field within an expanded field-of-view and on a distance of up to 70 meters, that enables maintenance teams to visually locate air leaks very quickly and accurately in compressed air systems.

Beyond the improvement of rugged handheld tools, monitoring practices are also evolving with the use of internet-connected instruments. Analysis and data is captured on a cloud platform allowing operators to monitor the key performance indicators (KPI) of compressed air systems including energy, electric power, flow, pressure and leakage flow. Fluke’s LeakQ™ Report Generator creates detailed air compressor leak reports from images captured by Fluke ii900 or the ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager and calculates the energy savings once the leaks are repaired.

2 Using data to deliver predictive maintenance.
For generations, maintenance professionals have used preventive maintenance to avoid equipment failures and turned to reactive maintenance when assets failed. With the emergence of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies, maintenance professionals can now connect tools, software and sensors to collect, store and analyse multiple data sources in one place. The pandemic accelerated investment in technologies that make remote monitoring possible. The technology enables reliability and maintenance teams to meet up-time requirements no matter how fluid on-site staffing might be. The trend for remote monitoring will continue, with small scale operations turning to remote condition monitoring services.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have held the promise to quickly identify trends and adapt quickly to changing operational conditions. Software armed with prescriptive analytics is finally meeting up with modern condition monitoring hardware to spark a revolution in the use of AI/ML in maintenance operations. Now a new race has emerged to pair that hardware and software with ML and AI algorithms. Companies, like Fluke, are working to combine technologies so that the software can identify trends, recognise data patterns and make specific recommendations for equipment maintenance.

3 Digital SI speeds integration of critical equipment measurements.
The accelerated uptake in digital measurement solutions for industrial applications can save time and money, whilst facilitating a shift towards predictive maintenance for systems. Although modern measurement digital devices are typically not fit-and-forget solutions, the increase in digital measurement solutions paves the way for verification technologies that can help to reduce the maintenance burden on personnel, without compromising on accuracy or reliability.

Digital SI (International System of Units), an initiative created as part of the industry 4.0 revolution, relates to the creation of a globalised system to transmit calibration certification information electronically. This is critical as the exchange of data and the data itself are the basis of highly automated industrial processes. The system ensures measurement traceability from all calibrations performed and enables sharing of information in a paperless manner. This speeds up the integration of measurements that can be performed using critical test equipment as part of an integrated factory enhancing maintenance efficiency and plant efficiency.

“The tests we have faced within the last 24-36 months is delivering a growing awareness among top management that fundamental changes in maintenance best practice need to occur in order to protect the bottom line,” said Paul Feenstra.

“This is music to the ears of progressive industrial managers who have been advocating for investments to improve efficiencies and reliability of systems. Now is the time to make the case to adopt innovative technologies, tools, and processes to ensure your company maintains a competitive edge and thrives in this new environment.”

Air-compressor maintenance.

Creating detailed air compressor leak reports from images captured by acoustic imaging cameras.

A new CO2 emission indicator to the online LeakQ reporting tool has been launched by Fluke. In addition to the existing estimated leak size and costs, this new feature adds a third element: the estimated electricity related CO2 emission in relation to the identified leaks.

Maintenance engineers and sustainability managers who work with compressed air and gas distribution systems every day can be unaware of exactly how much gas and energy is wasted due to small leaks in the system. For compressed air applications, LeakQ used in conjunction with Fluke’s online CO2 emission calculator enables users to quantify the financial value and environmental impact of detecting and fixing leaks in the system by creating detailed reports from images that have been captured using the Fluke ii900 Industrial Acoustic Imager and ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager.

Environmental impact.
Approximately 90% of all processing companies use compressed air in some aspect of their operation, such that it is sometimes referred to as the fourth utility. It is estimated that if there were no maintenance systems in place at all, the losses due to leaks in the network would be between 25-30%. Whilst desirable, it is highly unlikely that any plant will achieve an 100% leak free compressed air system.

Compressing air is an energy intensive process and as such any leaks in compressed air systems mean a significant proportion of the electricity used by a compressor to compress the gas should be perceived as energy waste. Due to the energy intensive process, and the potential environmental impact of electricity production, the ability to quantify the environmental and financial value of maintenance is helping companies drastically reduce their energy (costs) use and carbon footprint.

Detailed leak detection.
Typical leaks to focus on are quick connect leaks in a joint or interface that isn’t threaded, open end leaks in large holes or open-ended pipes, threaded coupling leaks via metallic threads or weld cracks, and leaks in rubber, flexible and plastic hoses and pipes. Standard leak detection tools only measure dB on a narrow frequency band but LeakQ carries out an automatic scan of the full frequency spectrum and captures the actual frequency range that the leak is generating. This makes estimations far more representative of the real leak rate than those that are achievable using more traditional measuring tools.

Report generator.

To develop a report and estimate the potential costs of leaks, the user simply transfers inspection data from the ii900 or ii910 to a computer, where they can be dropped into the online LeakQ report generator. The user then inputs the operating variables such as gas type, pressure, cost of electricity and System Specific Power ratio, which is a measure of compressor efficiency. The report generated will include a summary of all the leaks listed as well as their estimated individual and annual volumes, costs, and emissions. Leak images are also inserted into the report which can be shared as a PDF or downloaded as a .CSV file for importing into existing maintenance systems. A feedback option enables users to relay their experiences directly back to Fluke so that the company can continue to make the leak detection tool better and easier to use.

Prioritising maintenance.
Tako Feron, Global Product manager Acoustic Imaging at Fluke said: “Being able to prioritise, quantify and cost leaks in such a simple way is a game-changer for maintenance engineers who will be able to see the full financial and environmental impact of even the smallest leak in a compressed air system. Having the ability to reduce electricity usage is clearly a major bonus at any time but particularly in this challenging climate regarding the cost of energy. At the same time, it is essential to minimise leaks in compressed air systems if we are to meet our crucially important sustainability targets.

“It’s estimated that around 90% of companies use compressed air in some aspect of their operations and the majority of this is generated on site. That means it is down to the user to keep the costs of compressed air as low as possible and the LeakQ™ leak detection reporting tool provides an extremely powerful means of helping them to achieve that goal.”
