Automation management platform deployment.

KUKA has reached a significant milestone in industrial automation with the successful deployment of KUKA AMP (Automation Management Platform) at KTPO, one of North America’s major automotive manufacturing facilities.

Marc Fleischmann
The open orchestration platform is now live and actively supporting production operations, connecting existing automation infrastructure with next-generation AI-powered technologies. "Manufacturing is entering a new era," says Marc Fleischmann, Chief Software and AI Officer of KUKA Group. "Traditional automation is expanding and transforming. The future lies in combining the precision and reliability of proven industrial automation with the capabilities of AI-powered systems. KUKA AMP provides the foundation for that next step." By combining proven industrial automation with AI-driven decision-making, KUKA AMP enables manufacturers to increase operational flexibility, enhance productivity and unlock greater value from production data.

The implementation represents another step in KUKA Group’s strategy to bring Artificial Intelligence out of pilot environments and into real-world manufacturing at scale. The United States is a significant market for KUKA Group and home to more than 3,400 employees across engineering, manufacturing, software development, systems integration and customer support functions. Since 2006 KUKA has been operating KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO).

The next major leap forward will be driven by Physical AI – a new generation of intelligent technologies that enable machines and robots to better understand their environment, learn continuously from operational data and make increasingly informed decisions in real time. Factories generate enormous amounts of data. Until now, much of this information remains dormant in isolated systems. KUKA AMP helps customers to transform this data into actionable insights, allowing automation systems to better understand production processes, coordinate activities across workflows and continuously improve performance.

"KUKA AMP creates a scalable foundation for Physical AI," says Fleischmann. "It provides an automation platform that lets customers integrate their own AI models and generalize them in production with a shared context layer. By continuously collecting and analyzing operational data, it creates a closed loop system that can improve performance over time and helps organizations scaling intelligent automation."

First deployment of initial version in Ohio.
The first operational deployment of KUKA AMP is taking place at KUKA Toledo Production Operations (KTPO) in Ohio (USA), and initially focuses on autonomous, mobile robots (AMR). The 335,000-square-foot facility manufactures more than 300 vehicle bodies per day – approximately one every 2 minutes KTPO has produced over two million vehicle bodies, generating vast amounts of production data.

Since 2006, KTPO has produced the body-in-white for every Jeep® Wrangler sold worldwide and, since 2019, for the Jeep® Gladiator. The highly automated facility combines KUKA's expertise in welding, joining technologies and systems integration, operating with 285 robots and more than 60,000 connected devices across the production environment.

The facility offers an ideal environment for demonstrating how established industrial automation can be enhanced through AI-driven technologies. “Testing the alpha version of KUKA AMP at KTPO is an important step forward. KTPO is a familiar environment for us, so we can focus on evaluating the platform under realistic conditions and accelerate improvements that will help deliver the best possible experience for our users”, says Fleischmann. The goal is to help manufacturers drive higher efficiency through more comprehensive automation without replacing existing assets. By connecting mobile robots, machines, software systems and data sources, KUKA AMP enables companies to automate more complex processes, increase operational flexibility, reduce changeover times and unlock greater value from existing factory data.

"Physical AI should not be viewed as a disruption, but as the next evolution of industrial automation," Fleischmann adds. "Manufacturers want a practical path forward that builds on decades of investment. KUKA AMP is being developed in the United States and provides that path by connecting and gradually augmenting today's factory with the autonomous factory of tomorrow."

Visualising invisible losses .

The growing role of acoustic imaging technology in automotive manufacturing, where compressed air inefficiency, pneumatic instability, and leaks can quietly undermine production performance and energy efficiency, as well as process consistency.

Modern vehicle production relies on tightly synchronised operations. From robotic welding and automated paint systems to CNC machining and final assembly, every stage depends on a reliable and efficient compressed air supply. Yet while electrical or mechanical faults are often immediately visible, compressed air losses can remain undetected.

Industry estimates suggest that manufacturing facilities may lose between 20% and 30% of compressed air through leakage. In automotive plants featuring extensive pneumatic systems and large-scale distribution networks, even minor leaks can translate into significant energy waste and inefficient equipment, while operational costs are also likely to increase.

Other issues like pressure instability are also detrimental, affecting factors like welding consistency, paint atomisation quality, torque repeatability, vacuum gripping reliability, and equipment cycle stability. With many problems developing gradually, maintenance teams often face reactive troubleshooting rather than structured and more cost-efficient prevention.

Acoustic imaging changes this dynamic by converting high-frequency sound into clear visual information, allowing maintenance personnel to identify leaks and abnormal sound sources quickly, even in noisy production environments.

Unlike traditional tools such as ultrasonic testers and leak detectors that typically rely on single microphones and operator interpretation, HIKMICRO AI Series acoustic imaging cameras offer up to 136 low-noise MEMS microphones and adjustable bandwidth technology ranging from 2 to 96 kHz. The result is fast, accurate localisation of compressed air leaks during live production.

Designed for industrial maintenance applications, the HIKMICRO AI Series can detect leaks as small as 0.0047 l/min at 6 bar pressure from 0.5 m distance. Real-time visualisation on a 4.3” touchscreen allows users to pinpoint problems immediately, while integrated analysis software calculates estimated leak rate, leak cost, and energy impact. Voice, text, QR code, and image annotations further support inspection traceability and workflow efficiency.

Built for automotive production.
Automotive manufacturing facilities present unique maintenance challenges. In robotic welding workshops, fast-moving hose assemblies and difficult-to-access pneumatic systems make leak detection difficult during active production. Acoustic imaging enables maintenance teams to locate leaks without stopping robotic operations, helping maintain take time and reduce unplanned downtime.

In paint shops, where any compressed air instability can directly impact coating quality and energy efficiency, acoustic imaging supports structured air audit programs by identifying leaks during operation. Similarly, final assembly lines benefit from rapid inspection of pneumatic tools and vacuum systems, helping prevent gradual performance drift and repeatability issues.

HIKMICRO AI Series acoustic imaging cameras can also underpin plant-wide maintenance strategies. Compressor stations, centralised utility systems, machining workshops, and casting/molding operations can all benefit from faster leak localisation and earlier identification of abnormal sound sources before small issues escalate into production stoppages.

Results
Compared with conventional leak detection methods, acoustic imaging can reduce inspection times by up to 90%. Furthermore, long-range operation up to approximately 150 m improves safety by enabling inspections from distance in hazardous or hard-to-access areas.

“Automotive manufacturing is fundamentally built on repeatable and efficient processes,” says Stefan Li, Overseas Market Director at HIKMICRO. “Acoustic imaging gives maintenance teams visibility into problems that traditionally remain hidden until they disrupt production. By transforming sound into actionable visual information, manufacturers can move from reactive maintenance to predictive and data-driven operational management.”

With automotive manufacturers continuing to scrutinise energy optimisation, uptime improvements, and predictive maintenance strategies, acoustic imaging is fast emerging as an increasingly valuable tool for improving visibility across critical pneumatic infrastructure.

Enabling high-bit-rate mode.

The CAN in Automation association (CiA) has released the CiA 604-4 high-bit-rate mode specification for CAN FD light. CAN FD light is a commander/responder communication system specified in an annex of the ISO 11898-1:2024. Using CAN SIC (signal improvement capability) transceivers and the new mode, bit rates up to 8 Mbit/s are possible.

The commander node has always the communication initiative. Responder nodes only communicate on request. This means, no arbitration is necessary. Precise and expensive peripheral circuitry is not necessary. CAN FD light is intended to be used for price-sensitive applications, including LED (light emitting diode) rear lights in passenger cars. In general, CAN FD light is suitable for networks, comprising many simple sensors or actuators. The data link layer protocol frame format complies with normal CAN FD, featuring 64-byte data fields. In respect to the physical transmission, robustness and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) performance are the same as in traditional CAN networks.

“CAN FD light will be also suitable for 48-V powered vehicles,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director, “when related CAN transceivers are available.” Currently, CiA members work on a 48-V CAN transceiver specification.

Transceiver group.

The SIG (Special Interest Group) 48-V transceiver testing has been established by Can in Automation (CiA). The scope is the development of specifications related to CAN-based and LIN-based networks in 48-V supplied systems. This includes test plan specifications for 48-V physical media attachment (PMA) sublayer implementations.

The automotive industry is going to completely supply passenger cars with 48 V. The benefit: thinner power supply cables, reducing the wire harness weight. On the other hand, in-vehicle networks need to withstand higher voltage shorts. Loss of ground (GND) is also an issue. This means, PMA sublayer implementations such as PHYs, SBCs (system base chips), and stand-alone transceivers must not be destroyed by shorts.

The CiA specifications will extend the existing requirements given in ISO 11898-2 (CAN) and ISO 17987-4 (LIN). Additionally, CiA will specify related test cases for 48-V shorts and loss of GND. The SIG is chaired by Marko Moch, working with Cariad, a VW Group member (pictured).

Guiding engineers through evolving EMC regulations.

Strategic partnership provides comprehensive filtering solutions and expert support for energy transition and growing electrification

TTI IP&E – Europe, in collaboration with Schaffner, has announced their joint commitment to support engineers in navigating the impending extended electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations*, which will soon apply down to 9kHz. These new regulations are set to have a substantial impact on the EMC landscape. They will be critical for ensuring compatibility, particularly with the rise of powertrains and interfaces connected to the grid amidst a major energy transition towards increased electrification and sustainability.

The forthcoming regulations will necessitate significant adjustments for existing product families and require new product developments to incorporate these standards from the outset. While some EMC product standards, such as FCC Part 15 for intentional and unintentional radiators and CISPR-11 and CISPR-22 for radiated emissions, already specify limits below 150kHz, the broader harmonisation process will see generic standards change first, followed by product-specific standards. This means that all new products will need to comply with the new version once it is in place. Products already available on the market must also comply, regardless of their development date. TE recommends that engineers initiate discussions and activities promptly to avoid future delays, beginning with the evaluation and assessment of new equipment designs through pre-compliance measurements against draft standard limit levels.

TE offers an industry-leading portfolio of magnetic solutions that address both standard and customised EMC and power quality needs. TE’s expertise ensures a smooth and compliant transition towards these extended regulations. The company provides comprehensive, end-to-end support, encompassing design consultation, in-situ measurement, testing, and ongoing assistance for seamless integration and long-term system stability.

Engineers can benefit from TE’s proven passive filter solutions and its ongoing work on innovative active filter solutions. Addressing the cost implications of the new 9kHz regulations, the company emphasises that these can be mitigated by integrating adequate filter solutions from the initial stages of product development. While conventional EMI filters can reduce emissions, they can also cause resonance effects, increasing noise and filtering costs, thus necessitating expert guidance to balance compliance and cost-effectiveness.

For Electric Vehicle (EV) charging equipment, which represents a critical focus application in the electrified future, TE provides specialised filtering solutions. For AC charging applications, a broad portfolio of single-phase and three-phase AC EMC filters is available, with current ratings ranging from 1A to 100A for single-phase systems up to 520VAC, and from 3A to 2300A for three-phase systems up to 690VAC (with HV versions reaching 760VAC), offering standard to very high attenuation levels.

For DC charging stations, TE offers robust DC EMC filters, including the EVX series, specifically designed for EV applications. These filters cater to high current demands from 150A to 1600A (or up to 2300A broadly for DC systems) and high voltage requirements, up to 1500VDC, with options for low leakage current.

To verify product compliance, engineers must conduct adequate tests and measurements starting from 9kHz. TE supports these activities, offering modern test facilities and measurement know-how at its own locations, or supporting external test houses. Most common testing equipment, such as artificial mains networks and EMI receivers, is already capable of testing at 9kHz.

Markus Lorenz, Director Industry Marketing Industrial, TTI, Inc. - Europe, states, “The rapid pace of electrification demands robust solutions for EMC. Our partnership with Schaffner, part of TE Connectivity, empowers our customers with unparalleled access to industry-leading expertise and innovative filter technologies. This collaboration is crucial in helping them not only meet the challenging new 9kHz EMC regulations cost-effectively but also to ensure the reliability and performance of their critical systems in an increasingly connected and electrified world. We are committed to guiding our customers through this transition seamlessly.”

Through this strategic collaboration, TTI and TE are ready to enable engineers to achieve a smooth, compliant, and cost-effective transition towards the new extended EMC regulations, safeguarding product performance and reliability in diverse application environments, including the rapidly expanding EV infrastructure.

Reliable emergency calls anywhere, from 2G/3G to 4G.

An evaluation solution for the “Hybrid eCall”, advanced automotive emergency call system, marking an industry first*, has been launched by Anritsu.  Their Hybrid eCall seamlessly integrates high-speed 4G (LTE) communications with conventional 2G (GSM/GPRS) and 3G (W-CDMA) networks, ensuring uninterrupted emergency connectivity regardless of location. This solution facilitates the efficient and reliable development of Hybrid eCall compatible vehicles by automotive manufacturers.

Why Hybrid eCall matters.
The eCall system automatically initiates emergency rescue requests in the event of a collision. When onboard sensors detect an accident, the In-Vehicle System (IVS) transmits location and vehicle data to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Operators then use this information to dispatch rapid rescue services.

While conventional eCall primarily used 2G/3G networks, Next Generation (NG) eCall over 4G is increasingly widespread. It supports faster and more stable communication than its predecessor eCall and offers advanced features like transmitting accident scene footage. The EU plans to mandate NG eCall starting January 1, 2026, making compliance an urgent priority for automotive manufacturers.

However, conventional eCall is still necessary in areas without 4G network coverage. Consequently, Hybrid eCall technology—which switches between NG eCall and eCall based on network availability—is a focus of attention. Supporting Hybrid eCall ensures reliable emergency call services anywhere, making it essential for automotive manufacturers to adopt.

Product overview
Anritsu's evaluation solution is a PSAP simulator required for developing Hybrid eCall-compatible in-vehicle systems (IVS).

This solution consists of:

  • Signalling Tester MD8475B
  • eCall Software
  • NG eCall Software Option
  • Hybrid eCall Software Option

Key Features:

  • Evaluation using one MD8475B unit
  • Seamless testing without switching between multiple software packages
  • SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) supporting seamless handover of VoLTE (Voice over LTE) calls from LTE networks to 2G or 3G networks

This strong upport for automotive manufacturers developing Hybrid eCall-compatible devices is helping build a safe and secure mobile society.
