Support for European student group space rocket mission.

Elara Aerospace, an academically led initiative founded at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is being supported by Thomson, with precision linear motion technology for its liquid-fuelled Methalox rocket. The Elara team is seeking to become the first student group worldwide to develop a liquid-propelled rocket capable of exceeding 100 kilometers in altitude while being fully reusable and have space for up to 100 kg of scientific experiments. As part of a joint partnership with its Regal Rexnord sister brands Boston Gear and Kollmorgen, Thomson is providing key actuation components that will support active engine positioning and critical flight control functions.

28kN Methalox Engine
The system will use two Thomson PC Series precision linear actuators integrated with Kollmorgen AKM13D servo motors and dual-axis drive systems, along with Boston Gear Micron NemaTRUE™ planetary gearheads. Together, the components form a coordinated motion solution tailored to the application’s performance requirements.

In the Elara rocket, the actuators will support engine gimbaling, enabling controlled movement within a narrow ±5 degree operating range. The PC Series actuators were selected for their compact design, ball screw-based construction and ability to deliver accurate, repeatable motion in space-constrained applications.

“Rocket control applications leave very little room for uncertainty. Every commanded movement must be predictable, measurable and easy to verify,” said Anders Karlsson, Business Development Manager for Regal Rexnord’s Linear Motion Division. “For us, the value of this partnership is not only in supplying components but in helping Elara build confidence in the actuation approach before the system moves into flight use. Working closely with the team helped us ensure the motion package fits cleanly within the overall engine control architecture.”

The actuators were supplied as individual components, giving the Elara Aerospace team flexibility in system design and testing. The motion system is currently being validated on development platforms for use in the rocket’s engine control system.

“For an academically led team working on active engine control, it was important for us to use components that were not only technically capable but also practical to work with,” said Tom Luca Reinhardt, Founder and CEO of Elara Aerospace. “Thomson’s guidance gave us a clear path for the thrust vector control design without adding unnecessary complexity.”

Drive electronics.

“For us, drives are more than just their power.”

Since the 1980s, frequency inverters have been an integral part of the modular products offered by the specialist for drive solutions from Bargteheide (D). NORD’s drive electronics portfolio meets the requirements of numerous industry applications and always stays close to the market with its developments.

During the configuration and design of a drive system, NORD takes more into account than just motion. The focus is on energy consumption, increased operational reliability, reduced total cost of ownership or similar issues. “For us, drives are more than just their power”, says Jörg Niermann, Head of Marketing at NORD DRIVESYSTEMS. “We develop drive solutions that are precisely tailored to applications and associated customer requirements.”

Compatible and multi-functional.
The company maintains a wide range of products from which it can precisely develop system solutions for applications. Since the mid-1980s, an extensive portfolio of centralised and decentralised drive electronics supplement the manufacturer’s motors and gear units to create complete solutions. The range of services and functions reflects the diverse needs of the more than 100 industries supplied by NORD.

The frequency inverters are therefore characterised by high compatibility with all system designs and numerous integrated functions that make the integration of additional components superfluous.

  • NORDAC PRO is the control cabinet inverter with multi-protocol Ethernet interface and multi-encoder interface for multi-axis control.
  • NORDAC LINK for installation close to the motor provides full plug-in capability, therefore facilitating the installation and maintenance.
  • NORDAC FLEX is installed directly on the motor and has a modular structure as well as scalable functions.
  • NORDAC ON for motor mounting controls the high-efficiency motors from NORD and provides easy commissioning thanks to its multi-protocol Ethernet interface and plug-and-play capability.

The programme is constantly being developed further to meet the changing market requirements. Among others, the functional safety of the NORDAC frequency inverters is extended step by step to include additional communication protocols. In a next step, the NORDAC ON will feature new safety functions: In addition to STO and SS1, it will also be available with SLS, SMS and SSM in the future. Based on the Profisafe and FSoE interfaces, integration into existing Ethernet environments and operation as a stand-alone solution will then be possible.

The NORDAC ON will soon also be available for the wash-down area. As NORDAC ON PURE, it will feature the food-safe NXD tupH® surface treatment, a smooth, rounded housing design and a reduced number of plugs. Then, NORD will be able to supply complete drive solutions with aluminium housings and particularly resistant surfaces from a single source.

Engineering an upside-down lighthouse.

Some four years ago, Mclennan designed and suppled a novel custom motion system to drive the historic 5,000 kg rotating Fresnel lens lantern on the unmanned Tory Island (Toraigh) lighthouse – located nine miles north-west off the coast of County Donegal (IRL). The project, now successfully completed for the Commissioners for Irish Lights, was part of a trial to improve and lower energy costs and reduce the carbon footprint across the entire network of lighthouses that help protect shipping and mariners navigating the Irish coast and islands. (See map below).

Mclennan’s motion system was a part of extensive engineering upgrade work that replaced the Tory Island lighthouse’s decades old lantern rotation mechanics but maintained the technological heritage of the original Fresnel lens that dates over 100 years. Now, as Irish Lights continues work to improve the energy efficiency and environmental footprint of all of its heritage lighthouses, Mclennan, in a partnership with the Co. Kildare (IRL) based automation specialist Amon Electronics Ltd, has completed similar engineering upgrades to two more lighthouses on Rathlin island (Reachlainn) which, incidentally, is famed for its puffin population.

Upside down Lighthouse
Mclennan, prides itself on providing a “motion partnership” service to its customers. More than system integration, this often involves technical consultancy and development at a pre-project phase to enable feasibility studies, evaluate appropriate technologies and investigate ballpark costs. For the remotely located and non-mains powered Tory Island project, Mclennan was involved at a very early stage with the Commissioners of Irish Lights engineers to develop a cost-effective solution. The specified requirements included battery powered, dual-redundant, servo gearmotors and automation controls to drive the six-metre-high lantern optics via a three-metre diameter geared slewing ring. Throughout the project Mclennan passed its expertise to the project’s main contractors, Amon Electronics, in a new motion partnership.

For the Rathlin East and West lighthouses, Mclennan supplied similar motion systems to the original at Tory Island. Interestingly, the West lighthouse has a unique ‘upside down’ configuration as well as a distinctive, red-tinted lantern to enable its use in an area that is exceptionally prone to sea fog. Similar in size and scale to the Tory Island lantern, environmental improvements for the Rathlin lighthouses meant replacing high energy 1000W lamps with 70W LEDs whilst maintaining the original heritage Fresnel lenses. Whilst the Tory Island lighthouse had no mains electrical power and required the installation of solar PV and battery power and low voltage DC operation for the drives, Rathlin Island has mainland connected power. Although this made the motion system requirements somewhat less stringent, Rathlin’s environmental upgrade entailed that backup diesel generators were removed and replaced with batteries. Consequently, this called for a similar high efficiency battery powered drive system in the event that power from the mainland might fail.

Mclennan’s rotary servo actuator.

Although the Rathlin lighthouses have new ball-race bearing systems that replaced out-dated mercury bath bearings as well as upgraded slewing rings for improved efficiency, the huge load inertia of the lantern optics and its acceleration and continuous rotation speed provided a formidable challenge for the gearmotor specifications. As a solution, that had proven efficient and reliable for the Tory Island upgrade, Mclennan specified a 24/48V DC powered brushless, integrated 400 W servo drive from its distribution partner JVL Industri Elektronik A/S. The packaged solution included encoder feedback, RS485 communications and a programmable motion controller. With its integral power supply, this very compact decentralised solution both reduced wiring and suited the limited installation space in the lighthouse tower. To ensure the torque and speed required to drive the lantern and to mitigate the very large moment of inertia presented by the slewing gear arrangement, Mclennan specified two inline-connected planetary gear units to provide a nominal output speed of 14 rpm. The combined gear ratios’ torque magnification factor and reflected inertia reduction was more than sufficient to comfortably drive the lantern optics at its desired speed of 60 to 300 seconds per rotation. The short-term motor current and torque load during acceleration of the lantern and the much lower continuous current at running speed proved well inside the power requirements specified for prolonged use from the possible backup battery supply scenario.

The Rathlin West lighthouse hall and a close up of Mclennan’s rotary servo actuator in situ: JVLs 400W integrated drive in the centre of the image driving the slewing ring. The Rathlin West lighthouse has a red-tinted Fresnel lens system – hence the colour.

As part of the redundancy back-up requirements, each gearmotor included a free-wheeling clutch integrated into its output stage. With one drive powered at any time, the second unpowered drive could idle. The Mclennan supplied control cabinet included a programmed ARM microcontroller that took care of functions such as motor performance and acceleration timing, battery condition and related I/O processes, as well as the management of the slewing ring’s gear lubrication delivery system. The microcontroller also managed the motion systems’ redundancy through the detection of any failure of the primary motor drive - then energising the secondary drive. The cabinet included visual indicators for critical functions. A connected telemetry system, supplied separately, relays information from the control panel to the mainland. Mclennan developed the control panel the for the Tory Island project and included a C++ diagnostic and commissioning front-end which was passed to Amon Electronics and is used by Irish Lights for maintenance.

Mclennan’s control cabinet
Amon Electronics and Mclennan completed work on the Rathlin Island lighthouses and there are many other Irish Lights lighthouse upgrade projects in preparation. Several of these are without mains power and will consequently require the Tory Island self-sufficient electrical model. The Rathlin lighthouses were originally commissioned in 1856 and 1919 respectively, both retain their historic first order Fresnel lenses and with the removal of mercury material and diesel generators, have much improved the safety and reduced the environmental impact of these important facilities for several generation to come. Other modification improvements under consideration include replacing the stand-alone RS485 programmed intelligent drives with Ethernet interfaced alternatives so that real-time information can be easily relayed for preventative maintenance, improved safety and other enhanced control possibilities.

Industrial shredder control.

Industrial shredders crush materials made of plastic, wood, metal, and waste to a required size. Depending on the requirements, each shredder is made up of different components, which are to be operated efficiently without damaging the machine. In addition to robust hardware, an extensive software package is needed to control the shredder. However, the software programming requires appropriate know-how and ties up the manufacturer's capacities.
With the Motion-Axis Shredder software template, the automation specialist Baumüller in Nuremberg (SPS Fair 2022 (Nov 8-10) is introducing a template for the recycling branch to the market. It saves developers lots of time, particularly during a project's start phase, and they can fully concentrate on the process programming. The template contains a large number of the required machine functions as well as motion modules for making the servo motors, templates for the machine visualization, and functions such as EtherCAT diagnosis, commissioning mode, load balancing, and water cooling control.

The already programmed subsystem contains frequently needed machine functions for crushing and can be easily loaded into the shredder control system. The movements then merely have to be parameterized. The machine programmer no longer has to worry about the basics during development. For the machine builder, this means a faster time to market, and significantly reduced development expenditure.

The software package is suitable for single and twin-shaft crushers, with and without feeders, and can be integrated into different hardware concepts.

Template with all basic movement control functions.
In addition to the shortened development time, with the Motion-Axis Shredder software template, machine manufacturers also benefit from the recycling industry technology experience. For example, the operation of two motors with load balancing in one shaft is already preprogrammed. The customer only has to integrate the existing communication interface, and can then, among other things, control the shredder shafts directly via a speed setpoint. The machine template can be used to control a maximum of two crusher units, each with two dualwinding motors as well as a motor for the feed.

An EtherCAT gateway (eg ethernet IP/EtherCAT slave) as well as an OPC UA server are available as the interface for the transfer of data to a higher-level control between different devices, for example, visualization or Edge controllers. Other interfaces can be added on request.

Template for machine visualization and improved diagnostic options.
In addition to the necessary motion libraries, among other things, the Motion-Axis Shredder template also contains general templates for implementation of the visualization. Thus, for example, the user interface can be used to diagnose the current template status or to check the interface values. It can also be used to activate a manual mode for setting up the control or for testing the subsystem. The subsystem can therefore be operated as a stand-alone and without a connection to the higher-level control.

The template also contains a function for commissioning. For example, if two motors are coupled mechanically to a shredder shaft, both motors can be actuated separately and thus the shredder motor can also be operated with only one motor. The function is particularly helpful for test purposes.

By using appropriate remote maintenance solutions, it is also possible to set up a remote connection to the control system. Thus, when service is needed, the machine can be accessed from anywhere in the world, and in compliance with the highest security standards.

In addition to the software package, the system solution for shredders includes the complete main drive system with high-torque motors, servo converters, and mains rectifier units, including control cabinet construction, as well as the control technology with hardware.

Precise dip coating.

With its own in-house motion system design and integration service, and distribution partnerships with globally leading motion control component suppliers, Heason Technology has the capability and a strong reputation for application customised motion control solutions. Typically including precision-grade positioning mechanics and advanced motion control hardware and software, these bespoke systems often provide an important part of the enabling technology for innovative manufacturing or research processes. With the positioning system requirements fulfilled by Heason, the customer can apply its own technological expertise, safe in the knowledge that motion control will not be a limiting factor to project success.

Schematic of the dip coating process components
A recent example where Heason’s motion expertise played a significant role in a manufacturing project involved the design and supply of a single-axis servo motor driven actuator and control system for a novel thin-film dip coating process. The positioning system required ultra-precise speed control for the withdrawal cycle of a large, heavy and irregular shaped component to ensure a highly uniform and precise coating thickness. The components’ asymmetrically distributed mass and dimensions combined with the buoyancy effect of the coating fluid caused a load variation that would result in a significant series of stepped fluctuations in the reflected inertia seen at the motor as the product was vertically retracted from the coating bath. This load variation was a challenging factor for the low-speed control required for the process.

The customer specified a stand-alone system where an operator could simply program the actuator to a load position and adjust the dipping and retraction speed with recordable values to maintain a consistent and repeatable coating thickness over the process. Heason delivered a 700 mm stroke length actuator driven by a servo motor fitted with an absolute encoder for precise closed loop speed and position control from a servo drive. The speed control parameters were programmed between the servo drive and an HMI to complete the autonomous system. The servo drive chain included a planetary reduction gearbox to achieve the low speed required and a holding brake ensured safety for the vertically mounted system.

The specific choice of components for the stand-alone system fell to a PC32 series actuator from Thomson, a leading linear motion component manufacturer and a valued partner for Heason over several years. Its PC32 series features a smooth IP65 rated aluminium housing protecting a precision ball screw whilst a stainless-steel extension tube and rod adapter perfectly suit the environment and load mounting arrangement for the dip-coating process. A 7:1 ratio precision grade planetary gearbox, also from Thomson, is included to reduce the linear speed within the set range as well as help smooth speed fluctuations by reducing the effect of reflected motor inertia due to the irregular load distribution of the component during the process.

The actuator assembly is driven by a Kollmorgen AKM21E servo motor complete with integral holding brake and absolute multi-turn encoder. Heason enjoys a long-term distribution partnership and several years’ experience with Kollmorgen, as a British certified partner and silver-status supplier for its industrial automation systems, servo motors and drives. With precise servo control from the AKD BASIC series servo drive through its built-in BASIC programmable motion and machine software, the digital drives’ ultra-fast 62.5 microsecond servo update rate constantly maintains the exact desired motor speed despite the torque variation due to the irregular load. The AK12G series 7” HMI touchscreen, programmed with Kollmorgen Visualization Builder software allows full stand-alone operator control of the coating process. As an absolute encoder is used for servo feedback, homing the actuator to a loading position is a simple command. The operator then enters a retraction speed value into the graphic panel and a sequence is called from the intelligent servo drive delivering and retracting the component at the desired speed.

Heason provided the complete system pre-programmed and fully operational based on the speed range and speed tolerance specifications supplied for the dip coated component following extensive in-house testing before delivery to the customer. The motion system was supplied with operation manuals and servicing information.

Increased flexibility for motion system integration.

Two new integrated stepper motor lines from Novanta IMS (formerly Schneider Electric Motion) have been added to Heason Technology's  product portfolio - expanding its motion system integration capability towards lower cost projects where performance requirements do not warrant highly specified servomotor-based motion system. The Liberty MDrive and MDrive Plus all-in-one motion solutions variously cover NEMA 14 to 34 frame stepper motors with integral microstepping drives, motion controls, I/O as well as Ethernet and CANopen protocols packaged in IP20 to IP65 protected housings. With optional encoder feedback, the choice of open or closed loop operation further maximises application flexibility.

Competitively priced and easy to integrate into automated positioning systems, these compact, decentralised drives simplify machine design – benefitting from reduced wiring and reduced EMC whilst removing the need to accommodate drive electronics in control panels.

The Liberty MDrive and MDrive Plus series drives are programmable with Novanta IMS’s Mcode software through an RS-422/485 interface. Mcode includes logic, branching, trip and maths functions for comprehensive machine control. Both drive series also feature, CANopen to CiA DS301 and DSP402 with pre-programmed sequences called across multi-axis set-ups. They can also be set-up for simple position control using step/direction pulses from an external control source or operated in a speed control mode. A complement of eight I/Os are configurable for standard or high-speed performance, for example for fast registration on labelling machines or on-the-fly position synchronisation. Both drive series’ feature IP20 rated pluggable and colour coded connectors, or optionally with industry standard M12 circular connectors rated for IP65 protection levels. Specifically, the MDrive Plus is aimed at open loop motion tasks and, with a slightly smaller housing, suits applications where machine space is at a premium. The MDrive Plus’s application flexibility includes an input power requirement that ranges from +12 up to +75 VDC as well as direct-on-line 120 to 240 VAC.

The more sophisticated control capability of the Liberty MDrive offers exceptional performance and smoothness and is essentially aimed at Ethernet controlled system set-ups with a choice of EtherNet/IP, Profinet, ModbusTCP protocols. Automation libraries including networking add-on instructions are available for Rockwell RSLogix 5000, Siemens S7 and Novanta IMS’s own (SoMachine and SoMachine Motion series PLC and PAC systems. With a choice of open loop or closed loop operation - with optional incremental or multi-turn absolute encoders - the drive offers a wide application flexibility. Closed loop versions can also be equipped with Novanta IMS’s advanced hMT hardware control system which significantly increases the torque and positioning capability of the motor towards full servo performance, and also offers an advanced current control feature that includes programmable motor run and hold current. With an integral auxiliary logic power supply input and a power requirement range from +12 up to +70 VDC, the drive can be applied to battery operated applications with hMT configured to maximise efficiency with variable current controls available to save energy and reduce heating.

Heason Technology has already integrated these drives into various custom designed positioning systems. This includes Pharmweigh’s Draft Master automatic livestock drafting machine which includes four MDrive Plus integrated drives programmed and configured with Heason supplied gearboxes to operate belt driven gates during animal weighing and sorting.

This machine is operated in the harsh outdoor conditions faced in agriculture and has been well proven in extensive trials and is now in use on British and European farms. The new competitively priced drives will also, for example, suit integration with Heason’s range of electric actuators from its distribution partner Thomson Electric. The assembly would provide a complete yet simple positioning solution where a separate control panel is not required, and low voltage 24/48 V DC operation opens the market for portable machinery and equipment.

New flow control app for compressed air and gases.

Filling containers with compressed air or other gases such as nitrogen can be achieved more profitably and economically with the new Flow Control Motion App from Festo, developed for use with its VTEM Motion Terminal. As a leader in industrial automation, the company is continually developing new Motion Apps for the VTEM in order to reduce complexity and time to market for machine builders.

The VTEM combines digitalisation with pneumatics, marking the start of a new age of automation technology. Digitised pneumatics intelligently connect the mechanical system, electronics and software, ensuring better overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) combined with lower energy consumption. The quickly activated Motion Apps can be used to control the piezo piloted valves for almost all pneumatic tasks: increasing flexibility and energy efficiency to accelerate production processes.

For example, it is common practice for food product containers to be purged with inert gases like nitrogen. With the new Festo Flow Control Motion App, users can control the flow rate of compressed air and gases at up to 600 l/min digitally and simultaneously on up to eight independent channels. For more precise dosing, the integrated sensors can be combined with external flow sensors. This saves energy and reduces wastage of expensive process gases.

The versatility of this App-controlled approach becomes evident when we expand this filling example. Controlling the flow using the app allows the gas to be precisely dosed. The closed loop control enables the precise filling quantity to be defined. Another advantage is that this flexible, digitised gas control is tamper-proof. The Selectable Pressure Level App can be used to move filling nozzles to bottles or containers quickly and accurately, achieving flexible parameterisation – which in turn shortens the cycle times. After filling, the nozzles are retracted at reduced pressure to save energy.

Adding the Leakage Diagnostics Motion App means maintenance is simplified too, as it automatically monitors for leaks. Malfunctions can be detected and pinpointed to a specific actuator using diagnostic cycles and defined threshold values – the reliable basis for predictive maintenance.

Thanks to the easy activation of additional functions via Motion Apps, machine developers can create a basic machine type using the Festo VTEM Motion Terminal and then select the relevant Motion Apps to equip it with added value functions and features as per the customer requirements or market opportunities. The ability to copy and transfer parameter sets makes commissioning easier and saves time. Assigning functions via software has the added benefit of preventing operator tampering and protecting know-how, since it’s not possible to tell from the outside which functions the valves are executing.

Resolving electric versus pneumatic dilemma in linear motion tasks.

Machine builders can resolve the age-old dilemma of whether to deploy electric or pneumatic technology for linear motion tasks by adopting a more application-led approach and deploying hybrid solutions claims Warren Harvard of Festo.

Warren Harvard
He explains: “Many machine builders think they need to make a decision between electric automation and pneumatic drives. Some claim that electric actuation is cheaper, more energy efficient and easier to work with. Others feel pneumatic technology is far more rugged, simpler and has a higher power density. But this ‘one or the other’ approach isn’t always helpful in meeting the needs of the application. It’s clearly better to have an efficient overall system rather than to focus on the efficiency of individual components.”

This principle is driving new advances in linear motion, with product manufacturers seeking to combine the advantages of both pneumatic and electric drives in a single solution. For example, the Simplified Motion Series (SMS) from Festo offers an affordable option that is easy to install and operate. There is no need for external servo drives installed in control cabinets because the whole device is mounted directly on the machine.

Their simplified set-up and operation makes SMS electric drives perfect for simple motions between two mechanical end positions, without having to sacrifice electric drive motion characteristics such as pre-defined speed, gently cushioned movement into end positions and selectable force for pressing or clamping functions. They can be simply and securely combined mechanically with other SMS actuators using more advanced electric axes from Festo, or the vast range of pneumatically-driven guided actuators using standardised interfaces and centring rings for accurate positioning and load transfer.

Festo’s free online sizing tool gives added assurance, not only enabling users to select and size their linear motion solutions quickly and accurately, but also to generate the required documentation and drawings for incorporation in their overall machine design.

Furthermore, these drives are equipped with IO-Link® as standard so they can be integrated seamlessly into fully digitalised environments: supporting predictive maintenance regimes and smart air consumption to make a full contribution to optimising production and energy efficiency.

In conclusion Warren Harvard says, “Each industrial application has its specific requirements with regards to technical criteria: such as speed, acceleration, load capacity and force required, cycle time, holding duration, power to weight ratio, accuracy, control behaviour, torsional rigidity, efficiency or robustness. Pneumatic and electric drive solutions have traditionally offered specific advantages and disadvantages, but the advent of improved solutions such as the SMS Series mean that machine builders can opt for an alternative, more application-led, approach to finding a solution.”

Motors, Drives and Paris.

“Achieving the Paris Agreement: The Vital Role of High-Efficiency Motors and Drives in Reducing Energy Consumption”

This new whitepaper just published by ABB, reveals potential for significant energy efficiency improvements in industry and infrastructure enabled by the latest and most high-efficiency motors and variable speed drives. ABB calls on governments and industry to accelerate adoption of the technology to help combat climate change.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), industry accounts for 37% of global energy use and some 30% of global energy is consumed in buildings.

While mostly hidden from public view, electric motors - and the variable speed drives which optimize their operation – are embedded in almost every built environment. They power a vast range of applications fundamental to our modern way of life, from industrial pumps, fans and conveyors for manufacturing and propulsion systems for transportation to compressors for electrical appliances and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in buildings.

Motor and drive technologies have seen exceptionally rapid advancement in the past decade, with today’s innovative designs delivering remarkable energy efficiencies. However, a significant number of industrial electric motor-driven systems in operation today – in the region of 300 million globally – are inefficient or consume much more power than required, resulting in monumental energy wastage.

Independent research estimates that if these systems were replaced with optimized, high-efficiency equipment, the gains to be realized could reduce global electricity consumption by up to 10%. In turn, this would account for a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions needed to meet the 2040 climate goals established by the Paris Agreement.

Morten Wierod
“Industrial energy efficiency, more than any other challenge, has the single greatest capacity for combatting the climate emergency. It is essentially the world’s invisible climate solution.”, said Morten Wierod, President ABB Motion. “For ABB, sustainability is a key part of our company Purpose and of the value that we create for all of our stakeholders. By far the biggest impact we can have in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is through our leading technologies, which reduce energy use in industry, buildings and transport.

Considerable steps have already been taken to support the uptake of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources. ABB believes it is time to do the same for an industrial technology that will deliver even greater benefits for the environment and the global economy.

“The importance of transitioning industries and infrastructure to these highly energy efficient drives and motors to play their part in a more sustainable society cannot be overstated,” continued Morten Wierod. “With 45% of the world’s electricity used to power electric motors in buildings and industrial applications, investment in upgrading them will yield outsized rewards in terms of efficiency.”

ABB frequently assesses the net impact of its own installed high efficiency motors and drives on global energy efficiency. In 2020, it enabled 198 terawatt-hours of electricity savings – more than half of the Britain’s annual consumption. By 2023, it is estimated that ABB motors and drives will enable customers globally to save an additional 78 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, almost as much as the annual consumption of Belgium, Finland or the Philippines and more than the total annual consumption of Chile.

Regulatory policies are among the main drivers of industrial investment in energy efficiency around the globe. While the European Union will be implementing its Ecodesign Regulation (EU 2019/1781) this year, which sets out stringent new requirements for an expanding range of energy efficient motors, many countries have yet to take action.

To take advantage of the tremendous opportunities afforded by energy efficient drives and motors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ABB says all stakeholders have a critical role to play:

    • Public decision makers and government regulators need to incentivize their rapid adoption,
    • Businesses, cities, and countries need to be aware of both the cost savings and environmental advantages and be willing to make the investment, and
•Investors need to reallocate capital towards companies better prepared to address the climate risk.
“While our role at ABB is to always provide the most efficient technologies, products and services to our customers, and continue to innovate for ever greater efficiency, that in itself is not enough. All stakeholders need to work together to bring about a holistic transformation in how we use energy. By acting and innovating together, we can keep critical services up and running while saving energy and combatting climate change”, concludes Morten Wierod.

Motion detector with distance information.

InnoSenT GmbH is adding a new motion detector to its portfolio. The IMD-2000 is ideally suited for simple contactless control applications in the areas of building technology, automation, and safety equipment. The sensor’s technical characteristics and design optimize the functionality of conventional motion detectors and facilitate their use.

This is the second product of the new ‘InnoSenT Motion Detectors’ series (IMD). It is characterised by its considerable ease of use and the system level suitable for the customer group. Customers benefit from radar solutions based on the plug-and-play principle and that are easy to commission. They require little configuration work, which is usually limited to adapting them to customer-specific requirements.

This is due to the integrated signal processing, which optimally analyses the raw radar data for simple sensor applications. The system can be installed and connected in just a few steps. Customers use the outputted signals directly for trigger functions thanks to object or target lists as well as suitable interfaces. They hardly have to deal with the complex technology and data analysis. This makes radar more accessible to the market, so more and more industries benefit from the technology’s advantages.
In contrast to InnoSenT’s previous solutions for motion detection, the product is the first to provide distance information. Through the indication of distances, it is possible to limit the area in which a reaction will be triggered.

The IMD-2000 also impresses with its design – its small dimensions enable the sensor to be installed in flat or narrow casings. The built-in signal-processing unit also saves customers additional development work in order to integrate the radar. InnoSenT offers the features at an attractive price. Due to the further development of radar technology in recent years, the company has managed to provide the sensor technology at a lower and lower price despite further technical enhancements.

Radar-based motion detection is proving its usefulness in various industries. It opens doors, controls lights, or is part of security systems. But escalators or ticket machines also use sensors. The technology is also used to control lighting elements.

The sensor detects the movement of persons or objects by means of radar waves. This way, it is possible to control devices without contact and in an automated manner. In the field of building technology, this translates into a considerable boost in efficiency, since, for example, doors can be opened, lights switched on or the toilet lid can be opened only when necessary. As a security application, the system triggers an alarm when there are people in the detection area. The further developments are making motion detection increasingly interesting and paving the way for new possible uses. Among other things, there are little radars are in ticket machines to disable standby operation when approaching persons are detected.

Motion sensors have been part of the InnoSenT product portfolio since the company was founded in 1999. But radar technology is advancing rapidly. The company felt it was time to optimise this simple and popular radar application. The newly developed product harnesses the knowledge gained from customers’ practical use, the technological state of the art, and the radar experts’ many years of development experience.

‘We are driven by the desire to make our own technology even better. This applies not only to product innovations, but also to already established radar applications. Because we now have completely new possibilities. This starts with the materials, concerns the technical performance, and ends with signal processing’, says Cyrus Nabavinegad, Product Owner at InnoSenT, in describing the driving factors behind the newly developed product, and he adds: ‘The IMD-2000 is the best example of this. Thanks to additional distance information, the motion detector offers greater functionality at the lowest-possible price. The system’s integrated signal processing also makes it attractive to a new customer group. It is a strong competitor to existing CW radar or infrared sensors.’

The 24 GHz system is equipped with common interfaces for better compatibility. The signal-processing unit also simplifies the use and integration of the radar component. The sensor detects even slow movements and determines objects’ and persons’ direction of movement and distance to the radar antenna. This information is outputted via a target list via UART. For easier configuration, InnoSenT provides an EVAL kit with a software GUI.

This makes it possible to limit the detection area, which leads to a significantly improved false alarm rate in security applications, for example. As a door opener, the sensor can ignore cross-traffic or, for escalator control, disregard trains in further distances. This functional expansion of the small sensor now enables needs-based control for many applications.

Motion System.

Demonstrates value of single-source solutions and system-based design.

The 2G Motion System is a servo solution from Kollmorgen, based on the latest thinking about single-source, systems-based design. The 2G Motion System was designed specifically to harness the performance capabilities of their AKD2G servo drive and AKM2G servo motor.

Motor and drive are precisely matched in every element (e.g. drive switching frequency, commutation algorithms, motor magnetics), avoiding micro-incompatibilities that can occur when engineers select components from various manufacturers. The result is a system that delivers maximum performance, efficiency, and effectiveness in even the most demanding applications, including: industrial printing, laser cutting, packaging, robotics, inspection and measurement, machine tools, winding machines, and food processing.

Key benefits of the 2G Motion System include:
• Reduced design envelope: For new machine designs, the AKM2G allows designers to decrease the size, complexity, and footprint of the machine, while still getting the power and performance their application needs. The AKM2G can also be dropped into existing machines to increase performance, compared to competing motors, without increasing the size of the motor. The AKD2G includes SafeMotion options, expandable I/O, and dual-axis models, all without increasing drive size.
• Increased dynamic performance: The AKM2G can reduce indexing and move and settle times by delivering increased torque and power in the same size or smaller package.
• Faster development and commissioning: The 2G Motion System optimizes performance in every system configuration, saving machine engineers the time and effort of evaluating various vendors and component combinations.
• Machine cost savings: Single-cable design, dual-axis drives, and co-engineered options reduce material and machine assembly costs. Improved motor and drive efficiencies reduce energy consumption, lowering operational costs.
• Special features: Kollmorgen Servo on a ChipTM, SafeMotion monitor, WorkBench GUI, extended I/O variant, extensive feedback options, single- and dual-cable options, shaft, mounting, and connector options, holding brake option, and much more.

Simplified motor integration for linear motion systems.

Mounting kit featured in improved Thomson Linear MOTIONEERING® online sizing and selection tool.

Thomson Industries has launched an upgraded RediMount option, a pre-engineered, modular adapter kit for seamlessly installing motors or gears in less than five minutes. The improved option is now the default for Thomson linear motion systems and precision linear actuators, and its capabilities are factored into optimal sizing recommendations generated through the company’s Linear MOTIONEERING product sizing and selection tool.

According to Alexander Schollin, Product Line Specialist EMEA & Asia at Thomson, “Lead time is minimised significantly as the motor or gear and systems can now be shipped with RediMount pre-installed. Whereas design engineers previously spent valuable time searching for the optimal motor flange kit and installing the individual components upon receipt, now they can order our upgraded solution, significantly reducing lead time and having only the simple task of bolting on their motor upon receipt.”

RediMount accommodates a wide range of motor types and sizes or gears, which can be mounted to linear motion systems and actuators faster and with less effort than ever before. “RediMount also includes updated smart part numbers with a specific motor ID, which reflect the motor or gear manufacturer and type,” added Schollin. “For engineers with old product numbers, we developed a translator, which converts the old product number to a new one including motor ID.”

Furthermore, by using the Linear MOTIONEERING tool, customers can now check if their motor is powerful enough and meets the specifications of their application. This is a critical enhancement for project-based machine builders and automation partners. Products now available with the enhanced RediMount kit include:

  • M (Movopart®) linear units: These are ideal for economical, transport-grade applications such as packaging, material handling and factory automation.
  • WH (SpeedLine) linear units: The units are designed for high-speed material handling and packaging.
  • WM (PowerLine), WV units (DynaLine) and MLS units (ForceLine) linear units: These units are developed for applications such as machine tool automation and test/measurement.
  • T-Series actuators (T60/T90/T130): These rod-style precision linear actuators are designed for use in material handling, machining and factory automation applications. They are ideal for replacing hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

RediMount facilitates various Thomson linear motion systems and precision linear actuators.

Finally, apart from reduced lead and engineering time on the overall system, RediMount is also designed with a flexible coupling that matches or exceeds the high input torque of the linear unit.

Linear Actuators with integrated servo motors.

Thomson Industries now offers users of its PC Series precision linear actuators an optional, pre-mounted and pre-tested servo motor.  Bundling linear actuators with servo motors simplifies ordering, reduces the need for additional validation after installation, increases reliability, and reduces the total cost of owning and operating an actuator system.

“Inconsistencies in the way in which servo motors are mated with actuators can impact performance, reliability, and eventually the performance life of both the actuator and the motor,” said Niklas Sjöström, Product Line Manager – Systems Group for Thomson. “By pre-assembling and pre-testing standard integration with our PC Series family at the factory level, we save users the trouble of sizing, selecting and mounting the right motor for their application.”

Pre-installing and configuring Kollmorgen AKM servo motors complements the industry leading capabilities of the PC Series actuators, which have been demonstrated to provide four times the travel life of any other actuator of comparable size available today, double the power and load density, 25 percent better thrust force and side load handling, as well as higher speed and longer stroke length.  Integrating a servo motor so tightly with PC Series provides users with the following additional benefits:

Optimum motor matching.
All Thomson PC Series linear actuators can be ordered with a broad selection of Kollmorgen AKM servo motors, fully-integrated and tested.

Easier sizing and selection.
Because Thomson has already identified and tested a wide range of configurability options and has provided a tool that helps map applications to motor sizing, it takes less than 15 minutes to find the right combination. Downloadable and configurable 3D CAD models contribute to the solution. All parameters, including length, motor orientation, mounting adapters and screw leads, are fully customisable.

Fast and reliable installation.
Once the actuator/motor combination is selected, the unique Thomson RediMount™ motor mounting system speeds implementation by reducing the time spent aligning the actuator and motor. Should a customer prefer using their own motor make and type, they may still reap the benefits of the RediMount system, giving  the ability to seamlessly fit more than 600 different motor alternatives to the PC Series actuators. ISO standard mounting interfaces are also available to facilitate upgrades from pneumatic technologies.

Reduced maintenance.
Pre-aligning the system extends life by compensating for system alignment, complementing the maintenance benefits already gained from the PC Series’ IP65 rating and corrosion resistance.

Top quality servo motors
Thomson chose to pre-install Kollmorgen AKM servo motors because of their proven, high-quality motor range, complemented by a broad array of servo drives and programmable positioning controllers for both single- and multi-axis applications. Some of the benefits include:
•       Best-in-class performance with industry leading power density
•       Exceptionally low cogging and harmonic distortion to ensure smooth performance
•       Easy to commission and use with plug-and-play motor recognition and full-frequency auto-tuning on AKD™ Series servo drives
