Ai vision beyond pilots - goes global.

Customers report faster deployment, improved throughput, and new levels of collaboration.

Just announced is the general availability of OneVision™, Cognex collaborative Ai vision development environment designed to simplify and scale AI-powered inspection across manufacturing operations.

Since its beta launch in June 2025, more than 100 customers worldwide have used OneVision to accelerate AI-powered vision development and deployment, with many progressing from single-line applications to multi-site rollouts in days instead of months. This momentum reflects a broader shift as manufacturers move beyond isolated Ai pilots toward connected, enterprise-wide inspection strategies.

"AI vision has long delivered value, but scaling it across operations has remained a barrier,” said Matt Moschner, President and CEO of Cognex. "Manufacturers encounter recurring challenges—from fragmented workflows to models that don’t adapt across environments. OneVision addresses this by unifying the simplicity of the edge with the scalability of the cloud, helping organisations move from isolated pilots to consistent, enterprise-wide deployment."

Cloud-to-edge architecture for scalable Ai vision.
OneVision addresses a persistent challenge in industrial Ai: deploying advanced vision applications at enterprise scale without adding complexity or slowing production. This introduces a cloud-to-edge architecture, where Ai models are trained, managed, and governed in the cloud, while inspection runs at the edge on Cognex vision systems for real-time, reliable execution. Customers can now centrally manage the entire Ai lifecycle—from collecting and labeling production images to refining models—and deploy updates consistently across global fleets of devices. OneVision is optimised to work with Cognex’s latest systems, including the In-Sight® 3900 and In-Sight® 6900.

“While OneVision leverages the cloud for development and management, runtime inspection remains fully edge-based,” said Reto Wyss, Vice President of Vision Engineering at Cognex. “Once a model is deployed, no connectivity to the cloud is required. Production images stay local and latency is a non-issue.”

By centralising model development and management, OneVision helps manufacturers:

  • Standardise inspection processes across sites.
  • Reduce duplication of work across teams.
  • Reduce scaling costs by up to 50%.
  • Maintain version control and consistency across deployments.

Customer success: From pilots to global scale.
Across industries including automotive, electronics, food and beverage, and healthcare, customers are seeing faster Ai application development, improved throughput, and more consistent inspection results—while reducing reliance on specialised expertise and scaling deployments globally.

Essity – Ai inspection development: from one year to one day.

• “With our previous approach, developing a reliable sealing inspection application took more than a year of iteration and tuning, and quality issues could lead to full batch returns and significant material waste,” said Amin Tajeddine, Operational Technology and Digitisation Manager. “Using OneVision, we were able to build and demonstrate a viable solution in less than a day. OneVision’s simplicity and ease of use significantly reduced development effort and gives us confidence in how quickly AI vision applications can be scaled across our operations.”

Schneider Electric – Standardising AI inspection for global scale.

• “OneVision allowed us to develop and validate AI inspection standards centrally and then deploy those same models across our worldwide operations,” said Christophe Ernis, Smart Operation Manager, Product Power Division. “That approach helped us double yield, dramatically reduce false rejects, and reduce our dependence on specialised vision expertise. Most importantly, it gives us a repeatable way to scale best practices reliably across our factories.”

3M – Improving speed and collaboration in AI vision development.

• “With OneVision, our engineers can quickly label real production images, build models, and deploy them to cameras with far less effort,” said Scott Daniels, Senior Manufacturing Technology Engineer.

With general availability now underway, Cognex expects momentum for OneVision to accelerate as manufacturers demand scalable AI vision to drive operational efficiency across global production networks.

3D vision system for automated inspection.

An exciting new 3D vision system is making inspecting parts in 3D as easy as using a 2D smart camera. While optical inspection in 3D previously required a great deal of programming but offered few benefits, Cognex's new technology brings better image quality, simplified application development, and a wide range of true 3D inspection tools - significantly expanding the range of applications in industrial automation.

When it comes to inspecting parts, users can choose from several established technologies. If the decision is made in favor of machine vision, the question arises: Do you need an inspection in 2D or 3D and how much effort is required to implement the respective solution? Depending on the application, a proven 2D system is then often the first choice, even if the (theoretical) advantages of 3D image processing may be obvious.

There are two reasons for this. The first: Until now, there was no 3D vision system that met the requirements of most inspection applications in terms of ease of use and cost. Three-dimensional vision inspection was simply too expensive and complicated for most companies, and there were also few vision tools that worked with true 3D images. So, an additional PC had to be installed to actually solve the application, resulting in significantly more space and programming requirements. The second reason: 2D inspection with a smart camera works very robustly and with great ease of use. Therefore, in many cases, there is or was no real need to make the costly and difficult transition to a 3D inspection system

New possibilities for automatic 3D inspection
This situation is now changing with the introduction of the Cognex In-Sight® 3D-L4000 vision system. This unique smart camera enables engineers to solve a range of inline inspection, guidance and measurement applications on automated production lines quickly, accurately and cost-effectively. It offers a comprehensive suite of true 3D vision tools that are as easy to use as Cognex's industry-proven 2D vision tools, thanks to the familiar and robust In-Sight spreadsheet environment. In addition, the patented speckle-free blue laser optics are an industry first, enabling the capture of high-quality 3D images.

Blue laser optics make the difference
Users of 3D image processing are probably familiar with this: Typically, 3D imaging systems struggle with speckle - light effects that occur when laser light is scattered from the surface of the part back to the imaging system. Speckle is a problem in existing 3D vision systems because it changes the appearance of the part and reduces image accuracy. The system can only estimate where the laser is located. To date, no 3D system has been able to eliminate speckle and thus produce good enough images to perform reliable inspection applications in 3D.

However, the type of laser used in the In-Sight 3D-L4000 is a significant technical advance in laser-based imaging - and a reason for the excellent results delivered. The 3D-L4000 eliminates speckle by using a special laser in the blue light range. As a result, the imager sees a clear laser line, resulting in higher accuracy 3D images. In addition, the laser provides its own illumination for both 3D and 2D images - the system does not require any external light.

On board: Intelligent processing on real 3D point cloud images
In most "traditional" laser-based 3D vision systems, the laser head captures an image that is sent to a PC for processing. At the same time, they offer a limited selection of tools, most of which can only be used for simple height measurement. The dependence on PC programming makes 3D inspections cost-effective only for very complex applications. The In-Sight 3D-L4000, on the other hand, has its processing power built right in. This allows the vision tools to perform true 3D point cloud inspections without the need for an external controller or third-party PC-based software. A nice side benefit is that with onboard processing, image analysis can be completed in a very short time.

In the past, 3D visual inspection was difficult to understand and use. Most existing systems transform 3D data into 2D images. In doing so, the height of a point is represented as a gray value. So to understand the height information, one uses a false color representation of the rasterized 3D image in the 2D image. In this representation it is very difficult to see and successfully process the nuances of the 3D part. A common method is to convert a section of the rasterized 2D image into a 1D height profile. However, with the new technology used in the 3D-L4000, the image is a pure point cloud; what you see and evaluate is a true 3D image, not a reduction to a 1D height profile. And since 3D inspection is new to most users, the 3D tools are designed so that everyone can fully understand and use the new three-dimensional tools. In other words, you are essentially doing the same thing, but unlike before, you are working on an image that looks exactly like the part itself.

Intuitive setup with advanced 3D inspection tools – without programming skills
Another new feature of the In-Sight 3D-L4000 is the use of the intuitive In-Sight Spreadsheet development interface to quickly and easily set up and run 3D applications without the need for programming or external processing. It simplifies application development and streamlines factory integration with a complete I/O and communications feature set. It also allows 2D and 3D vision tools to be combined in the same application, resulting in faster deployments.

The In-Sight 3D-L4000 includes all the traditional 3D measurement tools expected of a 3D vision system, such as for plane and height determination. In addition, it has a comprehensive set of 3D vision tools such as PatMax3D, Blob3D, 3D Geometry and many more, designed from the ground up for inspections in a real 3D space. This makes it easy to measure or identify parts or irregularities on the surface, as well as gaps, edges and angles - even for parts with complex geometry such as pistons or hinges.

A wide range of applications
The new 3D-L4000's technical advancements and user-friendly features make it ideally suited for a wide range of applications in a number of industries, including food and beverage, consumer products, packaging, automotive, medical devices and electronics. Its great ease of use and the fact that no external PC, and therefore no programming skills, are required for setup and processing finally make laser-based 3D imaging a viable and affordable option. Automation engineers now truly have the choice between 2D and 3D.

Deep learning camera.

Cognex has introduced the world’s first industrial smart camera powered by Deep Learning software. This combination expands the possibilities of what can be successfully and precisely inspected in factory automation

Deep Learning and Artifical Intelligence (AI) are among the buzzwords not only in the manufacturing industry but also in many other fields. Deep Learning, a type of AI that leverages neural networks can be easily explained: Similar to how humans learn what a house is from a large number of examples, so too can a deep learning system come to understand the nature of an object from labeled images. Whether a car’s bumper, a package’s envelope, or something else, deep learning is an examples-based approach to solving inspection challenges. Furthermore, each inspection can be continually improved by feeding the existing algorithm with more example image data. This new data enhances the system leading to more accurate results.

Expanding the limits of automated inspection
Whether this is real intelligence or not, might be discussed by experts. From a practical point of view, the benefits for manufacturers are obvious and multiple. Manufacturers still rely on human inspectors throughout the production process because traditional machine vision systems cannot handle the complexity or variability within certain tasks. But humans can be prone to inconsistent results from one human to the next, or they can tire over the course of an eight hour shift. Additionally, there are many aspects throughout production that still go uninspected from one reason or another. Both of these realities open manufacturers up to quality control issues or the chances for recalls.

A vision system with integrated artificial intelligence, for example, is able to combine the judgement of a human inspector with the robustness and consistency of an automated solution for inspection or quality control. This is exactly the main advantage of the new In-Sight D900 vision system from Cognex.

As a first-of-its kind solution, it embeds Cognex’s deep learning software, known as In-Sight ViDi, inside an industrial-grade smart camera. This combination expands the possibilities of inline factory automation inspections.

Hardware: State-of-the art flexibility
The In-Sight D900 hardware is a compact, industry-grade smart camera that can easily be installed and deployed on the line without the need for a PC. The highly-modular, IP67-rated vision system includes field-changeable lighting, lenses, filters and covers that can be customized to match the individual application requirements.

For all three application tools, users can take advantage of the intuitive In-Sight spreadsheet interface allowing for a fast setup of Deep Learning applications without programming. The In-Sight spreadsheet simplifies application development and streamlines factory integration with a full I/O and communications function set. It also enables the ability to combine traditional Cognex rules-based vision tools (like PatMax Redline™) and Deep Learning tools in the same job, leading to quicker deployments.

Since In-Sight ViDi requires vastly smaller image sets and shorter training and validation periods than other deep learning solutions, applications are quick and easy to set up, teach, and deploy.

ViDi Read: Complex OCR

With the In-Sight ViDi Read tool, the user is able to solve challenging OCR applications in minutes. This module deciphers badly deformed, skewed, and poorly etched codes using optical character recognition.

This tool works right out of the box, dramatically reducing development time, thanks to the deep learning pretrained font library. The user simply defines the region of interest and sets the character size. In situations where new characters are introduced, this robust tool can be retrained to read application-specific characters that traditional OCR tools are not able to decode. In comparison to conventional vision systems without Deep Learning, this feature offers obvious advantages.

ViDi Check: Verifying assemblies and part location

Assembly verification
The ViDi Check tool on the In-Sight D900 allows manufacturers to perform fast and accurate assembly verification.

The system is able to detect complex features and objects. It verifies whether parts and kits are assembled correctly based on their location within a user-defined layout. The tool can be trained to create an extensive library of components, which can be located in the image even if they appear at different angles or vary in size.

ViDi Detect: Find defects and other unwanted variations

Airbag bad!
A third tool called ViDi Detect was designed for analyzing complex defect detection tasks.

It is able to learn from images of good parts in order to identify defective parts. In-Sight ViDi Detect is ideal for finding anomalies on complex parts and surfaces, even in situations where defects can be unpredictable in their appearance.

Summary: A new paradigm for high-quality vision inspections

The integration of the In-Sight ViDi deep learning based vision software on a smart camera helps factory automation customers easily solve challenging OCR, assembly verification, and defect detection applications that are often too difficult to deploy with traditional, rule-based machine vision tools and require reliable, fast and consistent results not possible with human inspection.

With the introduction of this system, Cognex addresses three application fields: optical character recognition (OCR), assembly verification and defect detection. Others might (and will) follow, but these three alone open up a wide range of possible tasks that the new system can tackle successfully and with more precision than a conventional vision system. With respect to the markets, the In-Sight D900 can be used across a range of industries including automotive, consumer electronics, consumer products, packaging, food and beverage, medical devices, and logistics.
