Apprentice opportunities in the emerging offshore wind sector.

New initiative maps education and training routes for electrical professionals and apprentices seeking opportunities in the offshore wind sector.

South East Technological University (SETU) and Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) have launched a new initiative highlighting education and training pathways for apprentices and people with electrical backgrounds seeking to develop skills for Ireland’s emerging offshore wind sector.

The ‘Electrical Pathways into Offshore Wind’ initiative, supported by ASL Safety & Training, was officially launched at SETU’s Summerhill Road Campus in Wexford (IRL) on in  September 2026, followed by a visit to WWETB’s Training Centre at Whitemill also in Co. Wexford.

ASL Safety & Training has provided health, safety, security and environmental training and consultancy services since 1994. The company works across a broad range of industries, supported by experienced professional consultants and trainers. Its courses and trainers are accredited by recognised industry and professional bodies.

LtoR: David Cunningham, Electrical Instructor, WWETB; Captain Phil Murphy, Project Manager for Offshore Wind, SETU; Billy O’Rourke, Apprentice; Paul O’Brien, Business Development Manager, WWETB; Mark Corcoran, Managing Director, ASL Safety & Training; and Aidan Corcoran, ASL Safety & Training.

The initiative brings together further and higher education and specialist industry training to demonstrate how existing electrical qualifications can provide a foundation for developing skills relevant to offshore wind.

Three pathways have been identified, combining electrical apprenticeship training and qualifications available through SETU and WWETB with Global Wind Organisation-approved training. Options include electrical apprenticeship combined with high voltage certification; SETU’s Certificate in Renewable Energy Systems; and the Certificate in Health and Safety for High Voltage Systems.

The launch comes as the south east prepares for significant development in offshore renewable energy. Tonn Nua, planned off the Waterford coast and expected to be operational by 2034, will have a target capacity of 900MW and is one of four areas identified for offshore renewable energy development under the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP).

“The development of offshore wind represents a significant opportunity for the south east but realising that opportunity will require a skilled workforce. Education and training providers have an important role to play in ensuring that people in our region can develop the skills needed to participate in this emerging sector," said Phil Murphy, Project Manager for Offshore Wind at SETU. “Working with WWETB allows us to look across the education and training landscape and create clearer connections between existing skills, further education, higher education and specialist industry training. For someone with an electrical background, this initiative demonstrates that there are practical routes through which they can begin preparing for opportunities in offshore wind.”

Paul O’Brien, Business Development Manager, WWETB added that “WWETB welcomes the potential job opportunities that the growing offshore wind industry will bring to the South Wexford and Waterford coastal regions. With decades of experience in supporting apprenticeships and industry, we are committed to building the partnerships and training infrastructure required to facilitate skills training for the many jobs that are expected.
“We are proud to highlight the WWETB electrical apprenticeship pathway, alongside other progression routes, that can help learners and qualified professionals take the next step towards careers in offshore wind and its associated industries. These pathways provide a clear roadmap for developing the specialist skills required to support Ireland's renewable energy future”

The pathways are suitable for vocational and professional applicants and can be undertaken as standalone learning opportunities or combined to add to existing qualifications and experience.

Recent analysis estimates that the first 5GW of offshore wind development could contribute between €1.7 billion and €2.2 billion in additional gross value added across the wider south region, representing a potential boost of over 11% to the south east economy. The initiative reflects a wider focus on ensuring that the economic opportunities associated with offshore renewable energy translate into skills and employment within the region.

Scheduling and dispatch programme.

To revolutionise energy storage market in Ireland.

Ireland’s energy market is undergoing a major transformation through the Scheduling and Dispatch Programme (SDP). This initiative, led by the Transmission System Operators (TSOs), aims to enhance how electricity is scheduled and dispatched across the grid in Ireland and Northen Ireland. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be enabled to fully participate in energy trading, aligning with the EU Clean Energy Package and supporting Ireland’s renewable energy goals.

Under the new framework, batteries will be permitted to buy and sell electricity in the day-ahead, intra-day, and real-time markets in the same way as traditional power plants. This shift positions batteries as active market participants, capable of optimising their operation based on market price signals and system needs. The project enhances the economic viability of battery assets unlocking the access to multiple trading platforms and revenue streams and encourages broader participation in energy markets.

Batteries can communicate their intended charging and discharging schedules directly to the grid operators. This empowers asset owners to better align their operations with both market conditions and system demand, offering a higher degree of control over how and when batteries are used. It also allows for more efficient scheduling of grid resources, particularly during periods of volatility or high renewable generation. Transmission System Operators (TSOs) will also have real-time access to data on the state of charge of individual battery systems. This provides better situational awareness, enabling them to make more informed decisions about when and how to dispatch battery resources to balance supply and demand. Batteries will also receive clearer and more accurate operational instructions from the grid, which enhances their responsiveness and efficiency.

“The new Scheduling and Dispatch framework brings fantastic opportunities for BESS owners who will be able to take advantage of new revenue streams and smarter trading. By leveraging real-time data and predictive analytics, GridBeyond’s platform can support battery owners and operators to optimise dispatch and trading decisions,” said Richard O’Loughlin, Deputy CEO at GridBeyond.

“We have been offering energy services and trading operations for several years empowering asset owners with advanced tools and AI-powered solutions including Forecaster and Bid-Optimizer, which are essential for maximising revenue and achieving operational savings in Ireland’s energy market. With the ability to trade more freely and flexibly, battery operators can now tap into new revenue streams.
“The new framework will also accelerate the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system by integrating efficient operation of low-carbon technologies.”

Thermal Imaging helping advance electrocaloric research.

At Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), researchers used FLIR’s A8583 cooled mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera and 5x microscope bayonet lens, and FLIR Research Studio software to investigate the electrocaloric effect—temperature changes in dielectric materials under an electric field.

This combination of high-speed thermal imaging and advanced analysis tools enabled real-time observation of thermal fluctuations, providing deeper insights into material behavior. The ability to visualise and quantify these temperature changes with precision supports the development of solid-state cooling solutions for electronics and sustainable refrigeration.

Challenge.
QUB sought to investigate the electrocaloric effect, a phenomenon where dielectric materials experience temperature fluctuations under an applied electric field. Understanding this effect is crucial for developing energy-efficient, solid-state cooling systems that could revolutionise electronics cooling and sustainable refrigeration. However, capturing these rapid thermal changes required a high-speed, highly sensitive thermal imaging solution capable of detecting minute temperature variations in real time.

Solution.
To address this challenge, Butler Technologies provided QUB with a FLIR A8583 MWIR cooled camera and 5x microscopic optic—a high-speed thermal imaging system designed for scientific applications—along with FLIR Research Studio software for advanced data analysis. The researchers used this combination of cutting-edge hardware and software to:

  • Apply a square wave voltage to various samples, including thin wires and multilayer plates
  • Observe real-time thermal fluctuations in dielectric materials
  • Detect and analyze thermal responses
  • Capture transient thermal changes

Results.

FLIR A8583 thermal camera, paired with FLIR Research Studio, capturing real-time electrocaloric temperature changes in dielectric materials at Queen’s University Belfast, supporting research in energy-efficient solid-state cooling systems.

Using the FLIR A8583 thermal camera and FLIR 5X microscopic optic, researchers at the university successfully identified thermal fluctuations at the same frequency as the electrical stimulus, confirming the electrocaloric effect in real-time. This precise ability to capture transient thermal changes enabled a more detailed examination of how electrocaloric materials respond under different conditions, offering insights into their feasibility for solid-state cooling technologies.

The integration of a high-speed cooled thermal camera significantly improved measurement accuracy. With the Stirling engine cooling the detector to approximately 77 Kelvin, the system achieved greater sensitivity and a higher frame rate, allowing for precise thermal photon detection. This capability is particularly valuable for scientific applications requiring the measurement of subtle temperature variations with extreme precision.

These findings contribute to the ongoing exploration of electrocaloric materials for next-generation cooling solutions, with potential applications in electronics thermal management, sustainable refrigeration, and materials science.

5. Innovative Project Award.
Recognises a project which has made a significant contribution to the advancement of industry in Ireland through the use of Automation Technology

Sanofi, Waterford (IRL)
The award project was to the Sanofi Equipment Digital Twin Project Team - Mr. Michael Lawlor, Mr. Conor O’Sullivan, Mr. Aymeric Kerserho and Mr. Gregory Albertson on the nomination of Mr. Aidan O Connell, Lecturer, MTU, Cork
Sanofi Waterford has introduced a Multi New Format Fill Line (MFFL), which is an ad- vanced-design fill line capable of filling both syringes and vials with Grade A isolator. From the outset of this new line’s selection and procurement it was identified as the ideal candi- date to be the first Equipment Digital Twin.
The Solution developed is the result of a strong project team with both internal partnership between our Digital and Business teams as well as with the direct collaboration and support from the machine vendors and well as from industry experts to ensure its applicability and therefore creating a solution that is both innovative and practical.
Leveraging the equipment OEMs in-depth knowledge of the manufacturing process and the knowledge and guidance of industry experts which was iterative ensured our solution is technically robust and closely aligned with the needs of our users as well as ensuring that it is aligned with business objectives. The Implemented Equipment Digital Twin is an exact replica of the physical line equipment down to the “nuts and bolts” level created directly from the CAD (3D) models of the physi- cal production line machines.
As a result, the physics and communication of the machines in the Equipment Digital Twin are the same as the physical line, allowing us to use it as a pre-production environment. All software changes are implemented on the Digital Twin before transferring to the actual equipment. This means we no longer need to use the physical line for testing and trouble- shooting. By protecting the physical line’s operational time, we can provide life-changing medical products to patients even more efficiently.
By utilising the Equipment Digital Twin, we also reduced electricity consumption and mini- mised the need for vendors to travel, as they can test their modifications remotely. This leads to a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the improvement in precision and efficiency provided by the Equipment Digital Twin already result in less waste, including syringes, vials, and product materials. As the production line goes into full operation, we anticipate even less waste over time, further enhancing our sustainability efforts.

6. Pioneer Award.
This is awarded, on the nomination Society members, in recognition of a lifetime devoted to instrumentation in Ireland.

Recipient for 2024 was Mr. Ger Hellen, NeoDyne, who was nominated by Mr. Declan Lordan of Douglas Controls and Automation.
Ger graduated in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from UCC in 1976. He started work with EI Company, Shannon, a subsidiary of General Electric USA (GE) and an early US FDI investment in Ireland when it was established in 1963. Ger was on a manager development programme and within 2 years the unit production manager for a production line with 80 operators, making parts for 6,000 TV’s per day. Production and people management experience proved invaluable subse- quently but product technology, involving TV CRT tube electron guns, was obsolete relative to semiconductor electronics. After three years Ger moved to Mitchelstown Creameries as a maintenance engineer.
NeoDyne was established in 1998 with Kevin MacCarthy and grew at a steady 14% per year. Ger’s garage became a 6-person office. The fields covered mirrored Ger’s experience in SCADA, PLC, instrumentation and HV/MV electrical. NeoDyne moved to Eastgate Lit- tle Island in 2002. In 2016 a succession plan was progressed and the next step in 2021/2 in- volved a Management Buyout of Ger’s shareholding by four managers, all of whom who had joined NeoDyne 20 years earlier. The buyout completed in October 2022 and Ger retired in March 2023 after nearly 47 year’s continuous working.
Today NeoDyne is wholly owned by 7 Director Shareholders and a further 35 manager engineers work in profit-share. 2024 turnover was over €30M , the cur- rent employment is about 210 and offices are located in Little Island, Dublin, Galway, Waterford and Chesterfield in England.
Ger is a strong believer in building the capability of Irish engineering, keeping company ownership in Irish control, and the growth-mindset and can-do attitudes that US FDI com- panies have brought to this country over the past 50 years. Ger is proud of his farming and Huguenot roots (Ger’s Huguenot Helen ancestor came to Innishannon in 1747)
