Innovators honoured.

Company honours the people behind its pioneering achievements.

Endress+Hauser has honoured the company’s inventors at the 2026 Innovators’ Meeting in Basel (CH). 294 initial applications were filed with patent offices worldwide last year, 41 new products and R&D expenditure of €281.4 millions underscore the company’s innovative strength. In total, more than 9,400 active patents and patent applications protect the company’s intellectual property.

Developers from across the Group who have been involved in patent applications come together to exchange ideas and present their most notable inventions. “The Innovators’ Meeting highlights just how much expertise, creativity, teamwork and perseverance go into our products,” says Dr Mirko Lehmann, Chief Technology Officer of the Endress+Hauser Group.

25 years of the Innovators’ Meeting: continuity and new momentum.
The first Innovators’ Meeting took place in July 2001. Following a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic, it was held for the 25th time in 2026. Of the 101 innovators from the first meeting, 35 are still active in the company today. Fifteen of them filed patents again in 2025. At the same time, 89 inventors from Endress+Hauser were involved in a patent application for the first time.

“Our innovative strength thrives on the collaboration between experienced and new inventors. Endress+Hauser’s long-term focus and values-based culture create an environment where experience is passed on and new ideas can flourish,” says Dr Christine Koslowski, Director of Intellectual Property Rights at Endress+Hauser.

Significant investment in research and development.
Last year, Endress+Hauser invested 281.4 million euros in research and development, 2.1 percent more than in the previous year. This represents 7.0 percent of sales. The slight decrease in this ratio compared with last year is attributable to accounting effects related to the acquisition of the gas instrumentation business from Endress+Hauser SICK. More than 1,300 employees at Endress+Hauser work exclusively in research and development, developing new solutions for customers across various industries.

Innovation for greater sustainability.
Endress+Hauser’s innovation efforts are aimed at making industrial processes more efficient and sustainable. In addition to product development, this includes improvements in production, logistics, IT and administration. The internal Ecodesign & Circularity Award, introduced in 2025, recognises solutions that combine environmental considerations, resource efficiency and technical benefits.

With the digitalisation of measurement technology, the importance of firmware, connectivity and the instruments’ integration capabilities is becoming more significant. In addition, the company develops software-based solutions and services, including cloud applications and artificial intelligence-based approaches. Another key focus of the innovation efforts is the analysis and measurement of material properties.

Quality, innovation and sustainability.

The 7th International Conference on Quality, Innovation and Sustainability (ICQIS 2026) will take place from 10–12 June 2026 at SETU-South East Technological University’s Cork Road, Waterford campus. The event is expected to attract researchers, industry leaders, and practitioners from across Ireland and internationally.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Lynch said the conference offers a valuable opportunity for regional enterprises to connect with global expertise; “ICQIS 2026 will bring world-leading insights directly to the South East. On Thursday, 11 June, delegates will visit Lean Industry 4.0 (LI4) and an industry partner to see innovation and quality systems in practice, offering tangible insights for businesses looking to enhance their own operations.

The conference will also include networking opportunities with academics, industry experts, and policymakers, helping to strengthen connections between SETU and the regional enterprise base.

The opening evening will take place at Waterford Treasures: Medieval Museum, while the conference gala dinner will be held at the Tower Hotel Waterford.

ICQIS 2026 will explore a wide range of topics relevant to industry, including lean management, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0 and 5.0, circular economy, and smart management systems. Ai welding inspection.

SmartRay is showcasing its fully automated JOSY weld inspection system at the EY’s European Industrial AI Innovation Hub* at the Skyloop in Stuttgart (D). The live demonstration features JOSY hardware with Tool Path Generation software created in partnership with Wandelbots and Grid Dynamics. This close-loop workflow can boost efficiency, eliminates manual errors, and reduces scrap for automotive manufacturers.

Major innovation and research for Irish region.

Connecting with industry for research and collaboration.

Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) has launched a transformative €13.6 million initiative, ARISE – Amplifying Research and Innovation Supporting Enterprise, which aims to revolutionise the way Irish industry and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access research, innovation, and expert support. Funded by the European Union and the Government of Ireland, ARISE is designed to catalyse economic growth and competitiveness in the Eastern and Midlands Region by bridging the gap between academic research and real-world industry challenges.

The programme offers industry access to TU Dublin’s cutting-edge facilities, Ireland’s largest concentration of academic researchers in a technological university, and a team of innovation specialists who will help businesses improve processes, develop new products, and build resilient, future-proof operations. ARISE focuses on five key sectors that are crucial to Ireland’s innovation economy:

  • Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering
  • Food, Agritech and the Bioeconomy

Innovation award in nanoelectronics and digital technology.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, is to receive the 2025 imec Innovation Award*. The award recognises Srouji’s pivotal role in shaping Apple’s technology roadmap through his leadership in the development of Apple silicon. In doing so, he has not only redefined Apple’s products, but has also had a major impact on the broader semiconductor ecosystem, spurring the advancement of chip technology that elevates features, experiences, and AI to new heights. Johny Srouji will receive the imec Innovation Award at the ITF World conference in Antwerp (b) next May.

Since joining Apple in 2008 to lead the development of the A4 chip – the company’s first in-house designed system on a chip (SoC) – Johny Srouji has built and led a world-class team of engineers driving innovation across Apple’s hardware technologies. Their work has fueled major advancements in Apple silicon, batteries, cameras, storage controllers, sensors, displays, and other critical components that define Apple’s product lineup.

After consistently leading the smartphone market with SoC designs prioritizing performance per watt, Srouji and his team brought their scalable architecture to the Mac, offering faster performance, enhanced capabilities, and category-leading battery life. Earlier this year, Apple launched C1, its first ever cellular modem system delivering excellent 5G and satellite connectivity while being far more energy efficient. Across all these innovations and more, the discipline to create and maintain a scalable architecture has yielded enormous benefits, and Apple’s chip designs are driving new strategies in the industry.

Pioneer work in polyurethane technology recognised.

The FSK Innovation Young Talent - Technology' category award, a prestigious recognition for pioneering ideas related to materials, was awarded to Eduard Kremer, a scientific assistant in the field of polyurethane technology at IKV Aachen.

The FSK Innovation Award annually acknowledges outstanding innovations in the domains of design and aesthetics, technology, as well as process and chemical engineering, emphasizing sustainable approaches. The competition is open to young talents, companies, and professionals submitting projects related to foam plastics and polyurethanes.

Eduard Kremer impressed the jury with his groundbreaking work on sensor-based process monitoring in PUR-RIM. His research allows for reducing the burden on the operator and significantly increasing the number of high-quality parts. By employing temperature, pressure, and DEA sensors, alongside considering ambient parameters such as temperature, air pressure, and humidity, process variations are detected early on. This not only leads to improved product quality but also eliminates issues like skin detachment and incomplete mold fillings. A graphical dashboard visualises all relevant data, enabling efficient monitoring and control of the process. 

Eduard Kremer's achievement highlights the potential of sensor-based technologies in enhancing efficiency and quality in industrial processes.

The award was announced and presented during the FSK Symposium on 22nd November 2023.

Funding announced for revolutionary technology projects.

Funding has been announced for 12 projects with companies from the south Connemara (IRL) as partners in four of those projects.

Tomás Ó Síocháin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, has welcomed the announcement that three of the authority's client companies - Eirecomposites, HiTech Health Manufacturing and InverMed (all based not far from The Read-out Signpost location) are partners in projects which will receive a share of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund.

This morning the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Simon Coveney T.D., the Minister for Higher and Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, T.D. and the Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary T.D. announced an allocation of €58.8 million for proposals under the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF). The aim of the fund is to support investment in the development and deployment of disruptive technologies and applications on a commercial basis.

Eirecomposites, based in Indreabhán, is a partner in the NSPCCA project, which is developing communication methods and satellites in space, jointly with the University of Ireland, Dublin, the company Mbryonics in Galway and other parties. Funding of almost €8 million has been announced for them today.

Eirecomposites, together with the University of Galway and Microfocus Galway Ltd, is also involved in the Digi-Stent project, which has received funding of €4 million, to create wireless digital stents.

HiTech Health Manufacturing has received €6.5m to develop CellConnect, a project that will capture data from every stage of the cell manufacturing process; the Gaeltacht company, located at An Tulach, is collaborating with the University of Galway and with Odyssey Validation Consultants Ltd.

Selio System, a pre-biopsy intervention device, has also received €4 million; Inver Med, based in Indreabhán, is jointly involved in this project with Trinity College, the University of Limerick and Selio Medical Ltd.

"This is great news for the companies involved in the projects that received funding today. It it notable that a company from the Conamara Gaeltacht is involved in a third of the groundbreaking projects which have been recognised as exceptional." said Tomás Ó Síocháin of the Údarás. "This is a great achievement for the companies themselves and also for this small Gaeltacht area. It shows that companies in Gaeltacht regions can be on a par with pioneering companies in Ireland and around the world, if they emphasize constant innovation, research and development."

Innovation cluster inaugurated.

Endress+Hauser has inaugurated its new premises at the Freiburg Innovation Center FRIZ. There, more than 70 employees of the Swiss group of companies specializing in measurement technology are involved in the development of new sensor technologies and software solutions. The various teams work closely together and are embedded in an innovative environment of research institutes, start-ups and other companies.

The FRIZ is located on the grounds of the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg (D). The building complex was completed in 2022 after two years of construction and offers more than 12,000 square meters of space for modern and flexible offices and laboratories. Endress+Hauser is the largest tenant and currently occupies around 2,400 square meters of office space on two floors and another 1,000 square meters on the ground floor for chemical and biological laboratories and clean rooms.

Different disciplines and technologies.
The company is bringing together six units in the FRIZ that were previously spread across the city. Together, they combine a wide range of disciplines and technologies: one team is working on solutions for the Industrial Internet of Things, for example to intelligently link software and sensor technology; another is working on optical analysis technology that can be used to monitor fermentation processes, for instance. A third team is looking at sensor and measurement technology of the future, including replacing the human sense of smell.

Jobst Technologies, part of the Swiss subsidiary Innovative Sensor Technology IST, develops, produces and sells biosensors. Endress+Hauser BioSense, a joint venture with Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft, a nonprofit research association, specializes in rapid on-site molecular analyses that can be used, for example, in the food & beverage industry. To protect innovations from imitators, a small team of patent specialists is also present on campus.

Working on tomorrow’s measurement technology.
CEO Matthias Altendorf sees the new location as a “breeding ground for the measurement technology of tomorrow”. The various disciplines on the campus should complement and stimulate each other, and the proximity to research provides additional impetus. “Innovation often arises at the interfaces, where we enter into exchange with partners from science and industry. By opening up to the university and its institutes, research facilities, spin-offs and other companies, we increase these points of contact.”

A summer party in a relaxed atmosphere rounded off the occasion, musically accompanied by the campus band Transistors.

Interactive and customisable in-person event.

Tackle Key Challenges Facing Industries in 2023, empowering customers to transform operations and meet sustainability goals.

Registration is now open for Emerson’s Innovation Days, a series of in-person events designed to demonstrate how its latest automation technologies and software can help industrial organisations meet their key operational and environmental sustainability goals.

Being held across Europe throughout 2023, the Innovation Days will be both interactive and customisable, with delegates able to select a programme applicable to their own industry and specific company challenges. Delegates will be able to learn how the latest Emerson solutions help to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency, transition to renewable energy, optimise process performance, reduce downtime, manage corrosion, remotely monitor equipment health, increase operational safety, perform data analysis at the network edge, and optimise control system performance.

Emerson experts will present deep-dive discussions, Q&A sessions and a series of technology demonstrations that explain ways of increasing energy efficiency that provide a quick return on investment; understanding and reducing fugitive emissions; how data integration and digital transformation supports automated predictive maintenance; and strategies for the digitalisation of decarbonisation projects. Additional demonstrations will focus on specific technologies, including intelligent valves, advanced control systems and software applications, and intelligent field devices, with Emerson product specialists describing current and future developments. Delegates will also have the opportunity to share their experiences, network with their peers and discuss their application challenges.

Automating electrification of chemical production processes.

Pioneering technology uses light to decarbonise chemical production, helping manufacturers reduce both emissions and operational costs.

Emerson has been chosen by Syzygy Plasmonics to automate its innovative catalyst reactor technology that uses light instead of thermal energy, such as heat generated from burning fossil fuels, for chemical manufacturing. The all-electric production method is designed to replace fossil fuel-based combustion, helping reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs while advancing global sustainability goals. Syzygy estimates its reactor systems could eliminate one gigaton of CO2 emissions by 2040.

The Syzygy catalyst reactor technology will advance decarbonisation in a cost-effective way by electrifying carbon-intensive activities such as chemical manufacturing and reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen, methanol and fuel production. Rather than rely on thermal energy, the Syzygy reactor harnesses the power of light to energise chemical reactions and reduce the carbon footprint in transportation fuels.

Syzygy has developed, scaled and integrated its core technologies, incubated at Rice University, into a universal photocatalytic reactor platform, which includes the Rigel™ photoreactor and the proprietary photocatalyst that enables light-driven chemical reactions at unprecedented efficiency.

Emerson will provide hardware, software and services for the Syzygy modular reactors, including its DeltaV™ distributed control system; industrial software for process simulation and data analytics; Rosemount™ instrumentation to measure pressure, temperature, level and flow; and Fisher™ valves to control pressure and improve safety.

Syzygy has three field trials planned for 2023. Leading global partners are driving strong market interest with trials located in North Carolina, California and South Korea.

Syzygy has received funding from the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, and investments from Aramco Ventures, BP, Chevron Technology Ventures, Equinor Ventures, EVOK Innovations, Goose Capital, Horizons Ventures, LOTTE Chemical, LOTTE Fine Chemical, Pan American Energy, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, The Engine and Toyota Ventures.

The most talented innovators in Europe are coming to the Donegal.

A group of young innovators from all over Europe will gather in Gaoth Dobhair next month for the the MIT Innovators U-35 Festival, with many of the events being hosted by Páirc Ghnó (Industrial Estate) Ghaoth Dobhair and gteic @Gaoth Dobhair. The conference will take place on the 11-12 May 2023, with these young innovators giving an insight into their areas of interest and demonstrating the ways in which their work is helping to improve society, through the use of cutting-edge technology.

Tomás Ó Síocháin, Chief Executive of Údarás na Gaeltachta, which administers the Páirc Gnó and the GTeic facility, commented: “Údarás na Gaeltachta are very happy that the Donegal Gaeltacht was chosen for a second year to host this festival, in which innovation and creativity are recognised and celebrated. The MIT Innovators Under 35 has been celebrating young changemakers for more than 20 years and will also feature some of the world’s leading technologists, with biomolecular physicist Georgios Nounesis, Director of the Greek National Centre for Scientific Research, ‘Demokratis’, delivering a keynote to the final list of Young Innovators.

Georgios and the young innovators will also be joined by distinguished leaders in innovation and tech from Italy, Andorra, the USA, Sweden, and the Netherlands including Vanesa Aroyo, Head of the Innovation Agency in Andorra and author Nicklas Bergman who sits on the Investment Committee of the European Innovation Council Fund.

Notable alumni of MIT’s Innovators Under 35 include Google Founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, CRISPR Technology Pioneer Feng Zhang and Tesla Motors Co-Founder JB Straubel.

The festival is sponsored by Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Northwest City Region Councils of Derry City and Strabane District Council and Donegal County Council, University of Galway, Catalyst, Randox, Optum, Ulster University, Unosquare and Atlantic Technological University.

The focus of this year’s festival will look at how technology can make society a better place and help generate economic growth in areas including biotechnology and medicine, computer and electronics, hardware, software, Internet, artificial intelligence, robotics, telecommunications, nanotechnology and materials, energy and transportation.

There will also be a special emphasis on young people and gteic@ Gaoth Dobhair will host an Education Day on the morning of 11th May, when students from the schools in the Donegal Gaeltacht  can visit the gteic to participate in a series of business challenges which they will solve with the assistance of representatives of local Gaeltacht businesses. The festival will also showcase the Gaeltacht region and the way in which remote areas can be as connected as any major city, thanks to advances in modern technology.

Co-chair at sustainability body.

Equitus World founder Raam Shankar has been named co-chair of TiE Global’s Sustainability and Impact Special Interest Group (SIG).  This is one of the world’s largest entrepreneurs networks, has chapters in numerous cities and regions across the world and has been fostering entrepreneurship for over 30 years.

Raam will help magnify the message around sustainability on a worldwide stage.  It comes after the leader of Equitus, which has bases in Manchester, London and Bangalore, became President of TiE UK North earlier in 2023. 

He said: “Sustainability is a key component of innovation in this day and age. This SIG aims to promote sustainability, sustainable practices while creating a positive impact across the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems it operates in. 


“For a business leader in the north west to be invited to be a co-chair on a sustainability initiative at a global scale is a pleasure and a privilege.”


TiE Global is a nonprofit venture devoted to the entrepreneurial life cycle in all industries and was founded in 1992 in Silicon Valley by a group of entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and senior professionals with roots in the Indus region.  The heart of TiE efforts lie in its five foundational programs – mentoring, networking, education, funding, and incubation.

Innovation in vacuum recognised.

The company Climeworks has been awarded with the Innovation Award by Busch Vacuum Solutions for its advanced use of vacuum technology. Climeworks is the first company to use Direct Air Capture technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In this way, the company is actively making an important contribution to reducing global warming.
Climeworks and Busch have a close partnership from the beginning. Climeworks has now been awarded the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award 2021" for its innovative use of vacuum technology in CO₂ removal. Managing Director and founder of Climeworks Jan Wurzbacher accepted the award together with other representatives of the company during a small ceremony at the headquarters of Busch Vacuum Solutions in Maulburg (D).

In these unique plants, MINK claw vacuum technology from Busch is used to filter CO₂. Busch presents the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" once a year. This award honors individuals or companies that make use of vacuum technology with particularly innovative ideas and thereby serve the well-being of people and the environment. The "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" was first presented in 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Busch Vacuum Solutions.

The rise in temperature caused by climate change can only be limited by restoring a healthy balance in the CO₂ content of the atmosphere. This can only be realized if both current emissions are drastically reduced and unavoidable emissions that have already been emitted are removed from the air.

Using Climeworks' Direct Air Capture technology, CO₂ is filtered directly from the air. CO₂ collectors selectively capture carbon dioxide in a two-step process. First, air is drawn into the collector by a fan. The carbon dioxide is captured on the surface of a highly selective filter material located inside the collectors. After the filter material is filled with carbon dioxide, the collector is closed, and the temperature is raised to 80 to 100 °C - releasing and capturing the pure carbon dioxide. The filtered CO₂ is extracted using MINK claw vacuum pumps from Busch.

It is then mixed with water and injected underground into basalt rock by Climeworks' partner Carbfix. Over a period of a few years, the CO₂ mineralizes itself and is thus permanently and safely removed from the atmosphere and converted back into rock underground. Climeworks' technology is powered exclusively by renewable energy or waste heat, and the modular collectors can be combined to create systems of various sizes.

Innovation centre in Singapore.

Palomar Technologies, is expanding its Innovation Center in Singapore to meet a growing demand in Southeast Asia for process development and specialty OSAT for advance semiconductor new product introductions.

Palomar opened its Innovation Center – Singapore in November of 2018 to address a vital market need for process development, device package prototyping, test and measurement, process maturation, and low-volume production. In 2019, market demand pushed Palomar to make its first expansion. This second expansion gives the center the added ability to work closer with customers on their specific needs.

The Singapore Cntre currently supports a wide range of customer applications including:

  • Micro optics used in 3D Imaging, LIDAR and Optical Sensors
  • RF LDMOS and RF GaN power amplifiers
  • High-reliability RF Microwave modules
  • Silicon Photonics and laser diode placement bonding

Innovators' meeting.

Patent approvals reach new record

Since 2000 Endress+Hauser has invited all employees involved in patent filings to the annual Innovators’ Meeting. No in-person events were held in the past two years because of the coronavirus pandemic. The company thus used this year as an opportunity to celebrate the event’s 20th anniversary. 360 innovators were invited to attend the two-day session at Europa-Park in Rust, Germany to be creative and celebrate with one another.

“Innovation continues to be a driver of our success and our innovation rate is high. The numbers nevertheless show us that the innovation process is suffering from a lack of personal interaction,” says Dr Andreas Mayr, Chief Operating Officer at the Endress+Hauser Group. With 258 initial filings, Endress+Hauser is slightly under the prior year’s figure of 276. “Many ideas arise through coincidental encounters and the sharing of information. Together we are simply more creative and innovative.”

One reason to celebrate is the new record of 764 worldwide patent approvals. Since many innovations in multiple countries are filed as patents, this figure is regularly above the number of internal patent submissions. The intellectual property rights portfolio, which protects the Endress+Hauser products, solutions and services from imitators, now comprises a total of 8,600 patents and patent filings.

Endress+Hauser places a high value on research and development. In 2021, the Group invested more than 210 million euros in R&D, which equates to 7.4 percent of sales. “This ensures that our pipeline continues to be filled with new products. We will introduce more than 30 new products to the market this year as well,” says Andreas Mayr.

Focus on personal encounters.
“This year’s Innovators’ Meeting is designed to offer a platform to take advantage of the potential of personal encounters,” says Dr Christine Koslowski, Director of Intellectual Property Rights at Endress+Hauser. “We expanded the program to two days and brought our innovators together from various Endress+Hauser companies to work on new ideas. Three of these concepts were awarded a financial and time budget to develop them further.”

The afternoon of the second day was reserved for a celebration ceremony and other awards presentations. The Innovators’ Meeting honoured Endress+Hauser employees for economically significant and especially creative innovations. Awards are also handed out for process improvements or the reuse of existing solutions. More than 100 employees were recognized.

IIoT suitable now, but in the future?

Future-proof IIoT networks require unified infrastructures, support for remote access applications, and powerful management tools

It may be tempting to rest on your laurels when you finally have your IIoT networks up and running. Nonetheless, change remains the only real constant in life, and the world of industrial networking is no exception. Your IIoT network may be sufficient for your current needs—it may even be ready for your foreseeable application requirements over the next several years. But what about the next decade or more? Change is always on the horizon, and we need to be prepared.

Since the early days of industrial automation, manufacturers have adopted a variety of purpose-built protocols and systems, instead of standard Ethernet technologies, for highly specialized industrial control applications. However, as the IIoT market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 24% by 2023, industrial networks of the future will in all likelihood be required to transmit large amounts of data between interconnected devices or collect data from remote devices. Achieve Greater Integration With Unified Infrastructure

Furthermore, you may consider selecting solutions offered by the key players who are advocating this new technology because they actively participate in TSN plugfests to complete the ecosystem and ensure compatibility among different vendors.

Access Anywhere to Your Remote Machines With Hassle-free Cloud Services

Cloud-based remote access offers many benefits to IIoT customers, such as reducing the traveling time and expenses of sending maintenance engineers to multiple remote sites. Furthermore, cloud-based secure remote access can provide flexible and scalable connections to meet the dynamic, changing requirements of the future. However, operational technology (OT) engineers for water and wastewater treatment plants, machine builders, and other IIoT customers may find it cumbersome to set up and maintain their own cloud servers to provide new services and applications. Indeed, considerable efforts are associated with setting up new infrastructure, even if it is in the cloud.
