“Ayla Busch is a leader with a special, with a unique style, based on appreciation, a sense of family, communication and, above all, diversity – in the fullest sense”, said nominator Lars Wagner, Chairman of the German Leadership Award jury and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at MTU Aero Engines AG.

The award was presented at the annual alumni convention of the “Collège des Ingénieurs” in Munich. In her acceptance speech, Ayla Busch explained how far back equality and diversity go in the history of Busch Vacuum Solutions: “My parents founded our company as an equal partnership back in 1963. That is unique. And even at the very beginning, we had an employee who was deaf and whom my parents supported in becoming a master craftsman.”

After a reception at the beginning of the event and before he handed over to laudator Lars Wagner, Prof. Hans-Peter Mengele, Chairman of the sponsoring association of the German Leadership Award, explained its significance to the approximately 200 invited guests: “The German Leadership Award is a particularly authentic award for innovative corporate leadership in the German economy. It is sponsored by the network of German alumni of the ‘Collège des Ingénieurs’. The engineers and scientists from the ‘Collège des Ingénieurs’ are among the excellent leaders of the next generation.” Since 2014, these young leaders nominate every year personalities for the German Leadership Award who are role models for them.

After the ceremony, Ayla Busch exchanged views with former award winners in a round table discussion. Afterwards, the participants of the event had the opportunity to network and taste Bavarian delicacies.

Innovation in vacuum recognised.

The company Climeworks has been awarded with the Innovation Award by Busch Vacuum Solutions for its advanced use of vacuum technology. Climeworks is the first company to use Direct Air Capture technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In this way, the company is actively making an important contribution to reducing global warming.
Climeworks and Busch have a close partnership from the beginning. Climeworks has now been awarded the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award 2021" for its innovative use of vacuum technology in CO₂ removal. Managing Director and founder of Climeworks Jan Wurzbacher accepted the award together with other representatives of the company during a small ceremony at the headquarters of Busch Vacuum Solutions in Maulburg (D).

In these unique plants, MINK claw vacuum technology from Busch is used to filter CO₂. Busch presents the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" once a year. This award honors individuals or companies that make use of vacuum technology with particularly innovative ideas and thereby serve the well-being of people and the environment. The "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" was first presented in 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Busch Vacuum Solutions.

The rise in temperature caused by climate change can only be limited by restoring a healthy balance in the CO₂ content of the atmosphere. This can only be realized if both current emissions are drastically reduced and unavoidable emissions that have already been emitted are removed from the air.

Using Climeworks' Direct Air Capture technology, CO₂ is filtered directly from the air. CO₂ collectors selectively capture carbon dioxide in a two-step process. First, air is drawn into the collector by a fan. The carbon dioxide is captured on the surface of a highly selective filter material located inside the collectors. After the filter material is filled with carbon dioxide, the collector is closed, and the temperature is raised to 80 to 100 °C - releasing and capturing the pure carbon dioxide. The filtered CO₂ is extracted using MINK claw vacuum pumps from Busch.

It is then mixed with water and injected underground into basalt rock by Climeworks' partner Carbfix. Over a period of a few years, the CO₂ mineralizes itself and is thus permanently and safely removed from the atmosphere and converted back into rock underground. Climeworks' technology is powered exclusively by renewable energy or waste heat, and the modular collectors can be combined to create systems of various sizes.

Using advances in vacuum measurement technology.

In process engineering, the exact observation of pressures in vacuum-assisted processes is an important parameter for ensuring optimum efficiency and the best possible product quality.

VACTEST vacuum measurement equipment from Busch is designed to combine the latest advances in vacuum measurement technology with exceptional manufacturing quality - providing an innovative and comprehensive portfolio of active vacuum gauges and controllers. This makes it possible to match the right measurement technology to each and every process.

Robust construction, reliability and measurement accuracy are key features of these devices, making them the ideal choice to monitor and control your vacuum process, whether it is in industry or research. These state-of-the-art technologies allow a wide measurement range from 1600 to 5 10-10 millibar covering all vacuum levels with accuracy. All sensors comply with international standards and regulations such as CE and RoHS.

A number of different sensor technologies in the VACTEST series cover the entire range between rough vacuum and ultra-high vacuum. They can basically be divided into two main categories: direct and indirect pressure measurement. The direct measurement principle is independent of the process gas and is based on the pressure that the molecule flow exerts on a membrane. This method is mainly used for rough and medium vacuum processes. At a higher vacuum level, indirect measurement principles are used, based on special properties of the process gas, such as thermal conductivity or ionization probability. Unlike the direct measurement method, these principles depend on the type of process gas. For this reason, a specific correction factor must be applied for each process gas - except for air and nitrogen.

A number of factors must be taken into account when selecting the correct sensor. In addition to the process and ambient conditions, the pressure range, required accuracy and gas composition play a key role in achieving optimum measurement results. With three product lines available, Busch VACTEST meets accuracy, measurement range and functional requirements of every vacuum system or process.

VACTEST digital transmitters are high-end gauges coming with a full range of options as standard. Their intelligent micro-controller architecture allows for optimum sensor control, as well as many setting options, making them the ideal solution for a variety of applications. VACTEST digital transmitters are based on Pirani sensor technology or on combinations of Pirani / cold cathode or Pirani / hot cathode technologies.

VACTEST analog transmitters feature a compact, rugged and functional design. Thanks to their excellent measurement accuracy and stability, these transmitters are ideal for centralized monitoring and control systems.

VACTEST mobile gauges are the perfect hand-held solution for quality assurance with vacuum processes and maintenance. These battery-operated gauges offer various functions, such as a USB interface for data export and display, as well as a data logger. They can even be used under vacuum. For example, these gauges can be sealed in vacuum packaging to measure the pressure within the packaging.

VACTEST active sensor controllers, which are compact control units designed for the simultaneous operation of several vacuum gauges, round off the product series. Used either as a table-top device or rack-mounted, they allow intuitive menu navigation and ensure full control of each transmitter. Parameters, such as gas type correction factor, pressure units, setpoints and other beneficial functions are easily adjustable.

In addition to the measuring devices, the VACTEST Vieweris also available. It is a free Bluetooth monitoring application for mobile devices with an Android operating system. It can be used to display the pressure values of up to 16 connected sensors. The tool was designed for Bluetooth data exchange between software and sensors and is ideally suited for maintenance and calibration purposes. Visual and sound alarms can be preset for maximum and minimum pressure values.
