Carbon capture efficiency.

Cool Planet Technologies, a specialist provider of membrane-based carbon capture solutions, recently organised a live demonstration of its modular carbon capture technology at a pilot plant in Grimsby (GB). Attendees were able to view real-time CO2 levels before and after capture, with continuous data provided by Vaisala MGP241 inline measurement probes.

Background.
The Climate Crisis is forcing countries and businesses around the world to significantly reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Ultimately, this will rely on decarbonisation and a move away from fossil fuels. However, there are a number of industries for which GHG reductions will be hard to achieve. These include process emissions in the cement, lime, steel, and chemical sectors, as well as combustion emissions in processes such as waste-to-energy.

Given the urgency of the climate crisis, the proximity of Net Zero targets, and the dilemma faced by the ‘hard-to-abate’ industries, there is an enormous global demand for effective carbon capture technologies that can be economically operated at scale.

CPT Rig

Cool Planet Technologies (CPT) was founded in 2019 by a group of mainly ex-oil/gas industry executives, with the sole objective of meeting the global demand for effective carbon capture technology.

Membrane-based CO2 capture.
CPT is the commercial partner for a membrane-based carbon capture technology developed at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in Germany. This provides CPT with exclusive worldwide rights to commercialise Hereon's latest generation PolyActive™ membrane and carbon capture technology. CPT and Hereon have filed a patent application for the design of their jointly developed carbon capture module, and will continue to collaborate on the further development of the technology.

Hereon’s Torsten Brinkmann says: “Membrane technology offers a number of advantages over alternative carbon capture methods. Importantly, no chemicals or consumables are necessary, and membranes have a long lifetime of around 5 years.” Comparing Hereon’s membranes with hollow fibre membranes, Torsten adds: “Flat sheet membranes offer greater flexibility in the selection of application-specific materials, and they provide superior fluid dynamics in the gas flow path, allowing optimum exploitation of the intrinsic membrane properties.”

Summarising the advantages of their flat sheet membrane technology, CPT’s Chief Technology Officer, Simon Gorringe says: “These membranes are highly efficient, easy to work with, compact and environmentally friendly.”

A key element in the success of carbon capture will be finding economically effective opportunities for CO2 utilisation, storage or sequestration. So, once carbon dioxide has been captured by CPT’s technology, a post-processing unit can be utilised to purify or liquify the CO2 to food or sequestration grade.

Proving carbon capture effectivity with CO2 probes In the early days of its development, the operating performance of the carbon capture modules was predicted by specifically developed simulation tools, which employ single-gas permeation data as the only experimental input. These models were then evaluated by comparisons with tests undertaken at the Grimsby pilot plant, and found to be extremely accurate – performing to within 1% of predicted CO2 capture.

CPT’s pilot carbon capture facility in Grimsby was designed to allow control of the pressure ratio across the membranes in the modules, and control of the CO2 content of the feed gas. The plant is equipped with two CPT modules, although the plant is able to accommodate four modules. The two modules in the demonstration plant operate in series, offering CO2 capture capacity up to 37,000 tonnes/annum (tpa).

Two live demonstrations of carbon capture performance by the CPT plant in Grimsby were conducted in June and October 2025, providing invited guests from industries such as lime, cement and steel with proof of concept and performance verification for CPT’s carbon capture data.

Vaisala inline CO2  probe
Five of Vaisala’s MGP241 probes continuously monitor CO2 concentrations in the feed gas, during the process and in both the permeate and the retentate. Data are logged once per second and carbon capture efficiency is calculated and displayed in real-time. “The accuracy and reliability of the CO2 probes is critically important,” Simon Gorringe explains. “Our initial research indicated that the Vaisala probes would meet our stringent requirements, but the pilot plant has allowed us to perform mass calculations to check their accuracy. Happily, this work was able to verify the high performance levels that the Vaisala probes deliver.”

The MGP241 probe was developed specifically to fill a gap in the market for carbon capture measurement probes. Uniquely, the MGP241 uses patented CARBOCAP® auto-calibrating infrared technology for the simultaneous inline measurement of both carbon dioxide and humidity. Importantly, the probes are able to accurately measure any CO2 concentration from 0 – 100%. Humidity measurement is also important because condensation would allow the formation of acids that would damage the equipment.

Next steps.
CPT has recently announced that it has commenced the assembly of its 10,000 tonnes per annum carbon capture plant on site at Höver. CPT’s construction team is currently installing and connecting the prefabricated modules, which is expected to take around two months. Capture operations are scheduled to begin in Q2 2026 following which the plant will demonstrate the performance, economics, and operability of CPT’s technology at scale over a 12-month period, and will also utilise Vaisala probes to verify projected performance. For example, CPT will target 95% CO2 recovery. CPT and Holcim will then collaborate on the full decarbonisation of the Höver plant with plans to build a larger plant to capture around 90% of Höver’s CO2 emissions (around 800,000 tpa), at the start of the next decade.

Looking forward, CPT CEO Andrew Corner says: “With over 150 locations worldwide, Holcim represents enormous decarbonisation potential for CPT’s technology.” However, given the size and urgency of worldwide demand for decarbonisation, Andrew is keen to emphasise the global potential: “From the outset, we have been resolutely determined to ensure, not just that our carbon capture solution is modular and scalable, but also, that it is both environmentally and financially sustainable.”

Clearly, CPT is targeting all of the hard-to-abate industries, and Andrew believes that the key to unlocking this potential is the provision of trust and confidence in carbon capture efficiency. “I am very happy to acknowledge the role that Vaisala’s probes play in delivering that trust,” he explains. “Our customers need to know what levels of performance they can expect from our systems, so the inline measurement of accurate, reliable CO2 concentrations is critically important.”

Hygrometer controls cabinet climate.

The new ETF 012 from STEGO is the evolutionary answer to increasing demands in control cabinet climate management. Building on decades of application experience, the proven hygrotherm has been completely redesigned – setting new standards in functionality, space efficiency, and global usability.

At just 35 mm wide, the ETF 012 saves valuable space on the DIN rail inside the control cabinet. This not only allows more flexible positioning but also creates room for additional components – a crucial advantage in compact enclosures and control environments. The wide voltage range from 24 V to 240 V AC and 24 V to 60 V DC eliminates the need for multiple variants, reducing inventory and installation effort.

The ETF 012 features modern push-in terminals. Electrical connections are established quickly, securely, and completely without tools – a significant simplification compared to conventional screw terminals. This saves installation time and minimizes potential wiring errors. An integrated LED reliably indicates the device’s operating status.

The redesigned electronics of the ETF 012 measure temperature and humidity accurately and respond rapidly to changing ambient conditions. The adjustable temperature range extends from 0 to +60 °C, while relative humidity can be regulated between 50 and 90 %, each with a hysteresis of ±1. An optimized internal layout, with heat-emitting components positioned in the upper housing section, further enhances measurement performance.

Electronic hygrotherms such as the ETF 012 monitor temperature and relative humidity inside control cabinets and technical enclosures. When defined thresholds are exceeded, they automatically activate heaters or fans – effectively preventing condensation. Excess humidity can impair insulation, promote corrosion, or, in the worst case, cause short circuits. Hygrotherms therefore play a key role in maintaining operational safety and extending the service life of sensitive components – especially in applications exposed to fluctuating environmental conditions or low ambient temperatures.

With its dual °C/°F scale and international certifications (UL, CE), the ETF 012 is suitable for worldwide use. Its robust design enables operation at ambient temperatures from –40 to +70 °C and up to 95 % relative humidity (non-condensing). High switching capacity (16 A at 240 V AC) and long service life make it the first choice for demanding applications in control cabinets and technical installations – particularly in mechanical engineering, infrastructure, wind energy, and industrial systems.

Support for climate protection.

Scienced Based Targets initiative confirms a near-and long-term emission reduction targets.

Endress+Hauser has achieved a further milestone in sustainability: The Science Based Targets initiative has validated the Group’s greenhouse gas reduction targets. Both the near-term target for 2034 and the net-zero target for 2050 are therefore in harmony with the 1.5-degree Celsius path of the Paris Climate Agreement and correspond with current scientific findings.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) offers a framework and guidelines to ensure that companies’ emission reduction targets are in accordance with the latest scientific findings. Endress+Hauser has committed to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. The Group thus supports the efforts of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level.

Dr Peter Selders
“Only with climate and environmental protection will life worth living on Earth be possible in the future,” said Endress+Hauser CEO Dr Peter Selders. “Sustainability is therefore not an ideal but a necessity that we have to make economically viable. This applies to our customers and to us. We can support the sustainable transformation of the process industry with our products. Of course, we must also become more sustainable ourselves, and that is what we are doing.”

Group sets itself ambitious goals.
The SBTi has now validated Endress+Hauser’s reduction targets. These include the absolute GHG emissions in the company through energy consumption (scope 1) and purchased energy (scope 2), as well as in the upstream and downstream value-added chains (scope 3). Compared to the base year 2023, the Group must reduce its emissions by 90 percent; a maximum of 10 percent may be offset through permanent carbon removal and storage according to the SBTi guidelines.

As a near-term target, Endress+Hauser has committed to reducing absolute GHG emissions in scopes 1 and 2 by 80 percent by 2034, again compared to 2023. Scope 3 emissions are to be reduced by 35 percent over the same period. “These targets are ambitious, but we are well positioned,” said the Group’s corporate sustainability officer Julia Schempp. “We have already identified areas of action and have developed a sustainability strategy for our portfolio.”

Measures to reduce emissions.

Julia Schempp
Within its own sphere of influence, Endress+Hauser wants to increase the proportion of renewable energy, to take additional measures regarding efficiency and to expand electromobility. A CO2 dashboard has been set up so that the Group companies can see where they stand on their path for the near-term target of 2034. It indicates, for example, which emissions result from fuel consumption and the external procurement of electricity and heat, and the share of energy from renewable sources.

The Group has also taken a raft of measures to reduce emissions in the upstream and downstream value-added chains. At 97 percent, scope 3 accounts for almost the entire carbon footprint of the Group. “This results from the purchase of steel and aluminum, which we use in our devices, as well as the long service life of our measurement technology,” explained Julia Schempp. The company wants to tackle this in purchasing and product design.

Finalist in the German Sustainability Award.
These efforts are also reflected in the company’s high ranking in the German Sustainability Award. It is considered Europe’s greatest recognition for ecological and social commitment. In 2024, the independent foundation honored 100 pioneers from business, science and the public sector for their contributions to sustainable transformation. Endress+Hauser was among the three finalists in the measurement and control technology category.

The award is based on demanding assessments by a jury of experts. Transparent processes and objective criteria help the nominated companies and organisations to further improve their sustainability performance. The German Sustainability Award was presented on 28 November 2024 in Düsseldorf as part of the German Sustainability Day, one of the leading congresses of its kind.

Reducing the power consumption of equipment.

Responding to climate change is an urgent issue, and lowering power consumption further is required in various applications.

Omron Electronic Components Europe has launched the G5Q-HR, the latest addition to the G5Q family of 10A PCB power relays. The new relays can achieve reduced power consumption and heat, and are 45 percent smaller than equivalent 16A relays. For applications which require high inrush current such as lighting controllers, smart plugs, home appliances and power supplies, this can contribute to downsized equipment design, while opening up new printed circuit board configurations.

First launched in 2001, the G5Q series has sold more than 500 million units worldwide. Considered one of the industry’s leading compact power relay products, the G5Q portfolio now boasts a wide range of variants covering many diverse applications, from home appliances to industrial motor loads. In response to customer demand for compact design and improved energy performance for 10A applications, Omron has now expanded its high inrush offering with the addition of the G5Q-HR, which is available in both single stable and latching variants.

As the only device in the G5Q portfolio that meets the TV-8 standard at 10A class, the G5Q-HR compliments the existing high inrush offering, while offering new possibilities for more powerful and compact end product applications. At 20.3 mm (L) x 10.3 mm (W) x 15.8 mm (H), it is Omron’s smallest TV-8 product.

The G5Q-HR is compatible with a wide range of capacitive loads as well as ramp loads of up to AC 120V, Inrush 117A. In accordance with its TV-8 certification, the G5Q-HR has been rigorously tested to last a minimum of 25,000 cycles, ensuring maximum longevity and reliability. The device also meets the UL Electronic Ballast Rating at 3A 277VAC and 5A 277VAC over 6,000 cycles, and meets IEC60669-1 at 3A 250VAC over 5,000 cycles. The G5Q-HR achieves a high inrush current resistance and supports multiple inrush loads. It is compliant with high input load standards exceeding 100A, such as lighting and power supplies.

The latching type (G5Q—U/K-HR) variant achieves extremely low power consumption by maintaining the contact “on” state with only one pulse of current. This reduces coil power consumption by approximately 99.9 percent compared to standard single-side stable relays. As well as reducing the power consumption of the relay itself, this can also help to reduce the amount of heat generated, contributing to greater efficiency and longevity of related components and systems.

Energy effects the environment.

Weather and climate are not the same. It is normal for the number of extreme weather events to increase and decrease. But human activity is causing the climate to change, and it has been happening for centuries.

Fossil fuels enabled us to attain an unprecedented standard of living that is unsustainable without the energy from fossil fuels. But burning fossil fuels also generates carbon dioxide. Half of this accumulates in the atmosphere where it affects the temperature of the earth.

If we continue on this path, increasing the standard of living will increase fossil fuel consumption. Importantly, human health will be adversely affected within a century or less depending on the rate of growth of use of fossil fuels.

This book from the pen of David W Spitzer of Spitzer & Boyes,  uses science and data to examine the effects of energy on the environment and current strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Although carbon dioxide mitigation may be beneficial, they have not halted or reversed the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Targeting certain technologies in certain economic sectors may meet this challenge head-on. This book arms the reader with the knowledge, data, and tools to evaluate what others propose and do about climate change.

Brazil's ecological transformation plan.

The Government of Brazil launched its Ecological Transformation Plan at COP28 in a presentation by the Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad with The Minister for Environment and Climate, Marina Silva; the President of the BRICS Bank and former President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff; the President of the Brazilian Development Bank, Aloizio Mercadante; the President of the of the Inter-American Development Bank, Ilan Goldfajn; and the Secretary for Climate, Energy and Environment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, André Aranha Corrêa do Lago.

The plan challenges development paradigms by envisioning a new role for the Global South in the contemporary world. It is a proposal that presents the region as the center of the green economy by advocating for environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive globalization.

" ...interrupt five centuries of extractivism and environmental destruction to position Brazil at the forefront of sustainable development!"

In his presentation, Minister Haddad stated that initial studies from the private sector indicate that ecological transformation could generate 7.5 to 10 million jobs across all sectors, with a focus on the bioeconomy, agriculture, and infrastructure segments, as well as income-generating opportunities.

However, to realize this scenario, the same studies estimate that Brazil needs additional investments in the range of $130 to $160 billion per year over the next decade. The investments should occur mainly in infrastructure to promote adaptations, produce energy, enhance industrialization, and improve mobility.

Minister Haddad praised Brazil's ability to mobilize investment and create sustainable infrastructure through public investments. He cited national examples that make the country "a giant in renewable energy," highlighting the network of hydroelectric plants, the unified electrical system, ethanol production, and the role of Petrobras and other leading national companies in the research and development of biofuels.

Citing examples of implementation measures, the minister referred to the creation of a regulated carbon market, the issuance of sustainable sovereign bonds, the definition of a national taxonomy focused on sustainability, and the revision of the Climate Fund. The initiatives aim to create conditions for a new wave of investments with the goal of concentrating industrial technologies, modernizing science, and qualifying the workforce nationally.

Advancements.
"The Ecological Transformation Plan that I have the honor to present to you today aims to unite forces around a historic goal: to interrupt five centuries of extractivism and environmental destruction to position Brazil at the forefront of sustainable development," declared Minister Haddad.

Haddad announced advancements in key areas for the ecological transformation of the Brazilian economy, achieved by the current administration since the minister attended the COP in Egypt last year. One of them was the nearly 50% reduction in deforestation in the Amazon due to the reactivation of prevention and control actions in the biome.

The minister listed the recently approved Bills on green hydrogen and offshore wind energy generation by the National Congress as crucial sectors for the energy transition that hold enormous potential for the country. Brazil also revised the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to achieve a 53% reduction in emission levels compared to the year 2005, a climate goal more ambitious than that of many developed countries.

"The Ecological Transformation Plan is an evolutionary process, just like the challenge of climate change. It will seek to adapt to new paradigms and develop public policies to address not only past problems but also those of the future," added Haddad, who classified the plan as a realistic yet ambitious model for the reinvention of Brazil.

Joint Statement by Brazil and UAE on COP28 to COP30 Nature-Climate Partnership.

At the COP28 World Climate Action Summit, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates announced a bilateral partnership to strengthen dual nature and climate action between COP28 and COP30.

They underscored their shared commitment to address the interlinked challenges of climate change and biodiversity and ecosystem loss, emphasizing the urgency and complementarity of implementing the UN Convention on Climate Change, its Paris Agreement, the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Presidents also highlighted that the partnership will focus on enhancing local livelihoods and supporting the development goals of indigenous and traditional peoples.

The cooperation builds on the UAE and Brazil’s Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2023 and will include several priorities, such as:

  • Tropical and mangrove forest protection, conservation, and restoration;
  • Scaling innovative financial mechanisms for nature, including the new Tropical Forest Forever mechanism to finance standing forest;
  • Finance and policy for local and indigenous communities, women, and youth related to climate and nature action;
  • Global synergies between national strategies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Both countries also welcomed the opportunity to work closely in support of Brazil’s G20 Presidency in 2024, as well the incoming presidencies of UNFCCC COP29 and CBD COP16.

Brazil seeks to advance Mission 1.5 at COP28.

The Brazilian delegation to COP28 held a press briefing on Day 6 of the conference to provide an update on progress in the negotiations. At the same time, the speakers took the opportunity to emphasize Brazil’s overarching priority at COP28, which is to ensure that the average global temperature does not exceed 1.5oC.

The speakers included the head of delegation and Minister for the Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara; the Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change, João Paulo Capobianco; the Secretary for Climate, Energy and Environment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, André Corrêa do Lago; and the National Secretary for Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Ana Toni.

Minister Guajajara said that she was proud to head Brazil’s delegation during COP28 thematic day of the indigenous peoples. COP28 is being attended by more indigenous people than ever before. She said that indigenous peoples are a part of the solution of the climate crisis, adding that “we are 5% of the world’s population but are stewards of 82% of the biodiversity of the planet”.

João Paulo Capobianco referred to Brazil’s success in reducing deforestation by 49% between January and October 2023, avoiding 250m tonnes of emissions – a major achievement that was labelled by the Prime-Minister of Norway as “the most important climate news of the year” – and recalled that Brazil had presented the initiative “Tropical Forests Forever Facility”.

The chief negotiator of the Delegation, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, stressed the sense of urgency that needs to inspire the fight against climate change, which is why Brazil proposed “Mission 1.5”. At the time of the Paris Agreement, science had not yet fully explained the consequences of a 1.5oC warming – but now that they are clear, it is clear that we should forge a sense of purpose to cap warming at that level.

“The most consequential outcome of COP28 will be the Global Stocktake, which must be based on science and on equity”, Corrêa do Lago explained. “It will inform countries as they discuss climate finance in COP29 and develop the second round of NDCs, to be submitted by 2025, at COP30. The path from Dubai to Belém will be decisive for humanity’s success in fighting climate change,” he added.

The questions from the media covered a variety of issues, including fossil fuels. The delegation explained that Brazil benefits from a variety of transition options, including biofuels and green hydrogen. Recalling the statement delivered by the BASIC group (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) at the opening session, the delegation stressed that developed countries should take the lead in phasing-out fossil fuel production and consumption, in an accelerated manner.

Regarding the relationship between trade and environment, the speakers explained that trends towards unilateralism, protectionism and fragmentation of international cooperation jeopardize trust and, consequently, ambitious climate action. Both the Rio 1992 Declaration and UNFCCC state that trade policy measures for environmental purposes should not constitute a means of arbitrary or unjustifiable discrimination or a disguised restriction on international trade, which is why Brazil is raising these issues both here at COP28 and at the World Trade Organization.

Significant energy savings using harvesting wireless devices.

EnOcean is making a significant impact in the fight against climate change. Through its innovative energy harvesting wireless technology, EnOcean is saving over 1.4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, preventing this harmful greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere. This achievement is made possible as EnOcean's technology is now connecting smart-building systems in more than one million premises worldwide.

In collaboration with SET Ventures, EnOcean has quantified the energy savings achieved by their devices, which result in an average reduction of approximately 15% in a building's energy consumption. Currently, EnOcean's products manage an impressive 221 million square meters of floorspace which equals around 74,000 football fields. As EnOcean continues to supply more sensors to the market, these annual savings are expected to grow even further.

"Reducing our energy demand is critical for transitioning to renewable sources and combating climate change. Buildings are responsible for 40% of global energy consumption, as reported by Forbes," emphasized Armin Anders, co-founder & VP Business Development at EnOcean. "Smart HVAC and power control are cost-effective measures that can significantly contribute to this cause. Products like ours, which allow us to eliminate unnecessary energy consumption, represent quick and affordable wins compared to extensive infrastructure investments."

EnOcean's wireless building-automation products operate on the principle of energy harvesting, drawing power from their surroundings, such as motion, light, and temperature differences. This eliminates the need for batteries and power cords. EnOcean supports various wireless standards, including Bluetooth, Zigbee, and the optimized EnOcean radio protocol. The product range includes kinetic switches, self-powered sensors, gateways, actuators, configuration tools, and the SmartServer IoT edge device. These products seamlessly integrate into existing Wi-Fi access points from Aruba Networks, simplifying installations without requiring complex cabling or additional gateways.

The products communicate with heating, air conditioning, and lighting, monitor occupancy and people flow, and allow settings to be automatically adjusted for optimum user convenience while saving energy. Because of their battery-free and maintenance-free nature, they eliminate the necessity for regular servicing and battery replacements, ensuring continuous, reliable performance and contributing significantly to reducing electronic waste and operational disruptions. Furthermore, their easy installation stems from the wireless, self-powered nature of the devices, which mitigates the need for complex cabling and power source setups, allowing for straightforward, eco-friendly integration into any building infrastructure using a “Peel & Stick” approach.

The significance of EnOcean's energy-efficient solutions is underscored by the impending Buildings Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG 2024), the new German legislation set to take effect on January 1, 2024. This legislation places significant emphasis on building automation in non-residential buildings as part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions from buildings. In alignment with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which aims to achieve carbon-neutral building operation by 2050 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, the GEG 2024 highlights the need for energy controls and self-regulating devices for room temperature control in buildings with over 290 kW of heating or cooling power.

Towards 1.5 degree target!

Group drives corporate social responsibility and joins Science Based Targets initiative.

The Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree target is fully supported by Endress+Hauser. By 2050 at the latest, the specialist for measurement and automation technology aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to net zero. The company has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which focuses on reducing rather than offsetting emissions, and intends to draw up a corresponding climate strategy in the coming months.

GHG emissions must be halved by 2030 and reduced to zero by 2050 in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C. With this in mind, SBTi is helping companies voluntarily set climate protection targets based on scientific findings. “We are currently working on a climate strategy for the Group that will define specific interim targets on the way to net zero,” says Dr Manfred Jagiella, who as a member of the Executive Board is responsible for sustainability at Endress+Hauser.

Carbon footprint as basis for sustainability strategy.
For many years, Endress+Hauser has attached great importance to energy efficiency when constructing new buildings, using renewable energy at many locations and promoting the use of electric vehicles. “We want to consistently pursue this path, especially as the requirements from all sides are growing,” emphasizes Julia Schempp. As Endress+Hauser’s Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, she is driving the climate strategy as well as other improvements in ecological, ethical and social matters. In doing so, she can rely on colleagues in a global network.

As a first step, Endress+Hauser measured its carbon footprint in 2022 in accordance with the GHG Protocol, an international standard for GHG accounting. For this purpose, key figures on direct and indirect emission sources (scope 1 and 2) were evaluated. Scope 3 for emissions along upstream and downstream value chains is still in progress. Since 2021, Endress+Hauser has also been participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the world’s largest disclosure initiative for corporate environmental strategies.

Sustainability activities also cover the supply chain.
Endress+Hauser intends to implement the climate and sustainability targets along the Group-wide standardized business processes. The globally active company is also keeping an eye on its supply chains. Julia Schempp has also been acting as Human Rights Officer since the beginning of the year. A human rights and environmental risk management system has been introduced to identify and avoid risks within the company and with suppliers at an early stage.

Measures include a whistleblower system for human rights or environmental misconduct, which can be accessed via the Endress+Hauser website. Employees, business partners and third parties can report possible violations here – anonymously if necessary – which are then independently investigated. This complies with the recommendations of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act and the Swiss Ordinance on Due Diligence and Transparency Regarding Minerals and Metals From Conflict Areas and Child Labor.

Customer forum on the sustainable transformation of the process industry.

Matthias Altendorf
“Combining economic success with social action and ecological responsibility has characterized Endress+Hauser since it was founded 70 years ago,” emphasizes CEO Matthias Altendorf. He believes the Group is on the right track in this respect. An important indicator in his eyes is the ranking in the EcoVadis sustainability benchmark. Last year, Endress+Hauser again achieved 76 out of 100 points in the audit. This placed the company in the top percentile of the comparison group and earned it platinum status, the highest level of recognition.

The importance the company attaches to the topic of sustainability is also demonstrated by the Endress+Hauser Global Forum, which will be held in Basel from 26 to 28 June 2023. The Group is using its 70th anniversary as an opportunity to discuss the sustainable transformation of the process industry with over 1,000 customers, partners and experts under the headline ‘Insights for sustainable decisions’. Matthias Altendorf: “We are convinced that we are part of the solution and not the problem.”

Appointment for HVAC sector.

Mike Carman has been appointed as Executive Business Development Manager for the HVAC-R sector with Invertek Drives. His role is to focus on the development of Invertek’s growing position as an innovator and manufacturer of energy efficient variable frequency drives (VFD) used to control and optimise the performance of AC electric motors used in BLDC compressors for applications such as Heat Pumps, CDU’S and refrigeration food retail display cases.

Mike Carman
He has worked in the VFD industry for more than 20 years, including a total of six years at Invertek Drives.

Mike has been heavily involved in Invertek’s work in the refrigeration sector in recent years with the launch of Optidrive Coolvert, a VFD designed specifically for OEMs to optimise the performance of BLDC compressors using natural refrigerants such as R744 and R290.

Rhydian Welson, Sales and Marketing Director, said: “Globally there is a push, indeed a need, to reduce energy consumption and associated emissions. Our VFDs are already being used in the HVAC-R sector and our overall market share of the industry has grown significantly in recent years having witnessed record orders and growth.

“We are in a commanding position through our innovation and drives products, including Coolvert, to support ever more efficient AC motor controlled systems, including BLDC compressors used in HVAC-R applications. These markets are growing rapidly and we are ready to support that.

“Mike has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this sector and will lead on this global development.”

Earlier this year the European Commission unveiled a revision of its F-Gas Regulation which aims to reduce harmful carbon emissions by at least 55 per cent by 2030 and making Europe climate neutral by 2050. Part of this means refrigeration systems manufacturers are having to turn to alternative “green refrigerants” such as, R744 and R290 natural refrigerants.

Mike Carman, said: “We recently attended Chillventa in Nuremberg, Germany, Europe’s premier refrigeration exhibition, where it became obvious just how well known Invertek and our Optidrive products have become within the industry. Our products could be seen on refrigeration and heat pump machines throughout the show highlighting how we are already making a significant impact.”

He added: “The global refrigeration equipment market was valued at $37.25 Billion (USD) in 2021 and expected to grow by 132% to $58.31 Billion (USD) by 2028. Place this alongside growth of 34 per cent in European heat pump sales in 2021 and it’s quite clear we have a significant role and opportunity to play in this sector. I’m looking forward to developing that opportunity by working with OEMs, our dedicated sales partners to integrate our drive technology into existing and future systems.”

Innovation in vacuum recognised.

The company Climeworks has been awarded with the Innovation Award by Busch Vacuum Solutions for its advanced use of vacuum technology. Climeworks is the first company to use Direct Air Capture technology to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In this way, the company is actively making an important contribution to reducing global warming.
Climeworks and Busch have a close partnership from the beginning. Climeworks has now been awarded the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award 2021" for its innovative use of vacuum technology in CO₂ removal. Managing Director and founder of Climeworks Jan Wurzbacher accepted the award together with other representatives of the company during a small ceremony at the headquarters of Busch Vacuum Solutions in Maulburg (D).

In these unique plants, MINK claw vacuum technology from Busch is used to filter CO₂. Busch presents the "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" once a year. This award honors individuals or companies that make use of vacuum technology with particularly innovative ideas and thereby serve the well-being of people and the environment. The "Innovation in Vacuum Busch Award" was first presented in 2013 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Busch Vacuum Solutions.

The rise in temperature caused by climate change can only be limited by restoring a healthy balance in the CO₂ content of the atmosphere. This can only be realized if both current emissions are drastically reduced and unavoidable emissions that have already been emitted are removed from the air.

Using Climeworks' Direct Air Capture technology, CO₂ is filtered directly from the air. CO₂ collectors selectively capture carbon dioxide in a two-step process. First, air is drawn into the collector by a fan. The carbon dioxide is captured on the surface of a highly selective filter material located inside the collectors. After the filter material is filled with carbon dioxide, the collector is closed, and the temperature is raised to 80 to 100 °C - releasing and capturing the pure carbon dioxide. The filtered CO₂ is extracted using MINK claw vacuum pumps from Busch.

It is then mixed with water and injected underground into basalt rock by Climeworks' partner Carbfix. Over a period of a few years, the CO₂ mineralizes itself and is thus permanently and safely removed from the atmosphere and converted back into rock underground. Climeworks' technology is powered exclusively by renewable energy or waste heat, and the modular collectors can be combined to create systems of various sizes.

Climate neutrality goal.

The NI 2021 Corporate Impact Report outlines the company’s first full year of progress toward its 2030 goals to make a positive impact on society and the planet. This progress ranges from building infrastructure for increasing NI’s workforce and supplier diversity over the next decade to creating hands-on STEM education programs that are already changing children’s lives every day.

The report also puts forth a new goal: By 2030, NI will become a climate-neutral company with an ongoing commitment to protecting biodiversity. The company’s ambition is to operate in a way that produces no net greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2).

NI’s 2030 Corporate Impact strategy and goals support three pillars—Changing the Faces of Engineering, Building an Equitable and Thriving Society, and Engineering a Healthy Planet—that were created to reflect where the company can have the greatest influence and impact as a test and measurement engineering leader.

“We are living through a period of rapid evolution. We see it with our customers who are accelerating the digital transformation of our world, and we see it in our society and across our planet,” said Eric Starkloff, CEO of NI. “Our 2030 Corporate Impact Strategy reflects our desire to be a driver of positive change.”

Formed Nine Long-term STEM Education Partnerships.
One of NI’s key drivers of positive transformation in 2021 was its announcement of $2.7 million in grants to STEM education initiatives that advance diversity in STEM education globally. The company formed nine new partnerships with nonprofits to bring hands-on programs and mentoring to girls and women, people of color and economically disadvantaged populations.

NI is using its funding, expertise and volunteerism to help partners scale their existing programs and co-create new initiatives. In Penang, Malaysia, NI worked with Penang Science Cluster to create and launch Girls in Engineering and Technology. In Debrecen, Hungary, it worked with Agora Science Center to launch the WATCH program. And in Austin, Texas, NI launched a collaboration with Thinkery and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area to jointly develop Collaboration to Realize Equity and Teach Engineering (C.R.E.A.T.E.).

These programs aim to diversify the engineering talent pipeline, complementing NI’s efforts to increase diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in its own workforce. To that end, the company engaged 74% of its employees in a Leading Inclusion conversation series, expanded its inclusion resource groups to over 1,000 employees and diversified its recruiting strategies.

Achieved Global Pay Equity Ambitions.
NI has a goal to achieve substantial equity in total rewards — base salary, variable pay, and benefits — for all employees in similar roles and levels with comparable performance and impact. In 2021, the company achieved substantial equity in base salary across the company, with ratios of 99% for women to men (global), 101% for people of color to white (U.S.), 100% for Black to white (U.S.) and 101% for Latinx to white (U.S.). Additionally, the ratio of standard entry-level living wage to local living wage was 134% for NI Hungary employees and 136.5% for NI Malaysia employees. This is equivalent to an entry-level job in Austin, Texas, paying approximately $24.50 an hour.

Conducted Lifecycle Analysis of NI Products’ Environmental Impact.
To support its 2030 goal to pursue circular design improvements, NI conducted a lifecycle analysis of its products’ environmental impact. The company found that improving energy efficiency is its biggest opportunity to design products that reduce its customers’ footprint.

This complements NI’s efforts to reduce its operational carbon footprint. Key 2021 achievements in this area include sourcing 35.5% of electricity from renewables and designing 113,542 square feet (more than an average New York City block) of new buildings and remodels to LEED and WELL standards. NI now has three LEED-certified buildings and four others designed to LEED standards (including a new Penang facility opening later this year).

“We’ve had to put in extra effort to keep Corporate Impact top of mind in the face of macro challenges such as the pandemic, supply chain disruption, and our transformation as a company,” said Tabitha Upshaw, senior director of Brand, Reputation and Impact at NI. “And I’m so proud of what we’ve worked together across the company to achieve this year.”
