Stable data centre power supporting Ai.

Enhancing grid stability and data centre power supply in the US to support Ai growth.

As the adoption of generative Ai continues to drive demand for electricity to power data centres across the United States, ABB has been awarded three orders with VoltaGrid – an advanced microgrid power generation company based in Texas (USA) – to deliver critical grid stabilisation technology. The project will support reliable and stable electricity for multiple facilities VoltaGrid has under construction in the US for Ai infrastructure projects. The orders were booked in the first three quarters of 2025. Financial details were not disclosed.

ABB are to supply a package of 27 synchronous condensers with flywheel and prefabricated eHouse units with power control including automation and excitation systems integrated into the synchronous condenser control panels. These units provide high and instantaneous inertia, support short-circuit faults and maintain network voltage by supplying or absorbing reactive power – making them a leading industry solution for enhancing grid stability.

VoltaGrid will supply its proprietary natural gas-fueled power solution, which is designed for rapid deployment and able to meet the specific power demands of hyperscale data centres. The VoltaGrid offering can serve as both a short-term and long-term behind the meter energy solution, supporting data centre growth and reliability. Project delivery is scheduled to start in December 2025, with the first units expected to be operational by April 2026.

“ABB’s synchronous condensers are vital for meeting the energy demands of next-generation technologies like Ai data centres, thanks to their proven ability to ensure grid stability and enhance the overall resilience of power systems,” said Nathan Ough, CEO of VoltaGrid. “Partnering with ABB allows us to accelerate project execution and meet the growing performance demands of Ai operations, delivering more value to our customers.”

Data centres accounted for approximately 1.5 percent of the world’s electricity consumption in 2024, with the US responsible for the largest share of this at 45 percent. US data centre power consumption is expected to account for almost half of the growth in electricity demand between now and 2030 – with the US economy predicted to consume more electricity in 2030 for processing data than for manufacturing all energy-intensive goods combined, including aluminium, steel, cement and chemicals.

With the need for more power, alongside challenges such as grid stability and resilience, ABB supports data centres worldwide with electrification, automation and digitalisation products and systems to ensure secure and reliable power, supporting their operational reliability, energy efficiency and cost optimisation needs.

“ABB is proud to partner with VoltaGrid and support the evolving energy ecosystem in the US. Across the world, data centres are increasingly critical infrastructure and so maintaining grid stability has shifted from being optional to strategic,” said Per Erik Holsten, President of ABB’s Energy Industries division. “Delivering stable, reliable and efficient power generation is vital to enable data centre growth. Our integrated automation, electrification and digitalisation solutions play an important role to meet growing demand while maintaining energy security.”

“Synchronous condensers may resemble large motors or generators in design, but their real strength lies in grid support,” said Kristina Carlquist, Head of Synchronous Condenser Product Line at ABB’s Motion High Power division. “As data centres expand, these machines are seeing renewed importance for their ability to provide inertia and short-circuit strength. For VoltaGrid, they will help ensure reliable, resilient microgrid performance.”

Reducing the power consumption of equipment.

Responding to climate change is an urgent issue, and lowering power consumption further is required in various applications.

Omron Electronic Components Europe has launched the G5Q-HR, the latest addition to the G5Q family of 10A PCB power relays. The new relays can achieve reduced power consumption and heat, and are 45 percent smaller than equivalent 16A relays. For applications which require high inrush current such as lighting controllers, smart plugs, home appliances and power supplies, this can contribute to downsized equipment design, while opening up new printed circuit board configurations.

First launched in 2001, the G5Q series has sold more than 500 million units worldwide. Considered one of the industry’s leading compact power relay products, the G5Q portfolio now boasts a wide range of variants covering many diverse applications, from home appliances to industrial motor loads. In response to customer demand for compact design and improved energy performance for 10A applications, Omron has now expanded its high inrush offering with the addition of the G5Q-HR, which is available in both single stable and latching variants.

As the only device in the G5Q portfolio that meets the TV-8 standard at 10A class, the G5Q-HR compliments the existing high inrush offering, while offering new possibilities for more powerful and compact end product applications. At 20.3 mm (L) x 10.3 mm (W) x 15.8 mm (H), it is Omron’s smallest TV-8 product.

The G5Q-HR is compatible with a wide range of capacitive loads as well as ramp loads of up to AC 120V, Inrush 117A. In accordance with its TV-8 certification, the G5Q-HR has been rigorously tested to last a minimum of 25,000 cycles, ensuring maximum longevity and reliability. The device also meets the UL Electronic Ballast Rating at 3A 277VAC and 5A 277VAC over 6,000 cycles, and meets IEC60669-1 at 3A 250VAC over 5,000 cycles. The G5Q-HR achieves a high inrush current resistance and supports multiple inrush loads. It is compliant with high input load standards exceeding 100A, such as lighting and power supplies.

The latching type (G5Q—U/K-HR) variant achieves extremely low power consumption by maintaining the contact “on” state with only one pulse of current. This reduces coil power consumption by approximately 99.9 percent compared to standard single-side stable relays. As well as reducing the power consumption of the relay itself, this can also help to reduce the amount of heat generated, contributing to greater efficiency and longevity of related components and systems.

Long-term backup up to 100 hours.

Bicker Elektronik has introduced a new DC UPS solution for long-term backup applications. The 24V emergency power supply is equipped with the particularly safe and durable LiFePO4 battery technology and offers backup times of up to 100 hours. Consisting of the UPSI-2406D intelligent charging and control unit and the BP-LFP-13250S battery pack, the DC UPS solution is ideal for protecting embedded industrial PCs, controllers, drives, sensors, measuring systems, lighting and safety technology and many other applications. In the event of a power failure, voltage dip or flicker, system failures and data loss in safety-relevant applications can thus be effectively avoided. In addition, the new UPS management software 'UPScom' with cross-platform technology and intuitive user interface offers extensive functions for monitoring, parameterisation and messenger services.

Features at a glance:
DC UPS solution for long-term backup up to 100h
Powerful 24V emergency power supply
LiFePO4 battery technology - safe & long-lasting
Over 6,000 charge and discharge cycles
BMS protection and control functions
Battery start function
Intelligent input current detection
USB & RS232 interface and relay contact
UPS management software 'UPScom' included
Reboot function for IPC systems
Extended temperature range -20...+55°C
UN 38.3 transport certificate

The powerful LiFePO4 battery pack BP-LFP-13250S with 330Wh enables backup times of up to 100 hours, for example for sensor applications or emergency lighting systems. The lithium iron phosphate battery technology (LiFePO4) convinces with over 6,000 charge and discharge cycles and an extended temperature range from -20 to +55°C. The high-performance battery management system (BMS) integrated into the battery pack to optimise service life and safety monitors and controls the complete charging and discharging process of each battery cell of the energy storage unit. The integrated cell balancing ensures a balanced and even charge of all cells so that the full capacity of the LiFePO4 battery pack remains permanently usable. The BP-LFP-13250S has a UN 38.3 transport certificate.

The intelligent charging and control unit UPSI-2406D in a robust aluminium housing for DIN rail mounting is connected to the battery pack via two lines. In addition to the power transmission line (BAT PWR), all relevant operating data of the energy storage unit are continuously monitored and controlled on the data line (BAT DATA) via I2C interface. In the event of voltage dips or power failures, a MOSFET disconnects the input within a few microseconds and the connected load is supplied from the energy storage unit without interruption. In backup mode, the UPSI-2406D provides a constantly regulated DC output voltage. The PowerSharing function ensures that the input power is kept constant and distributed to the load and battery charger in an appropriately adapted manner. When the load on the output is low, more energy flows into the charger and vice versa. In backup mode, the minimum load detection monitors the output load to be supplied from the energy storage unit and automatically disconnects the energy storage unit from the charging and control unit if the load at the output falls below a certain limit. This prevents the energy storage unit from being unnecessarily emptied. In addition, the UPSI-2406D has a USB and RS232 interface for data communication as well as a relay contact.

The completely newly developed UPS management software 'UPScom' is available for download free of charge for Microsoft® Windows and Linux. The software enables the controlled shutdown and switch-off of the connected devices during a power failure. For setting and pre-programming all parameters of the DC UPS system as well as real-time monitoring with charge status display, the responsive WEB-UI is called up in a web browser. The adjustable parameters include load sensor (mA), shutdown delay, maximum backup time, minimum charge capacity before system start, notifications via e-mail. The UPS management software 'UPScom' uses the new WebAssembly (WASM) architecture, which is executable in most current web browsers. 'UPScom' runs on x86 compatible systems and also on most ARM-64 based systems under Microsoft® Windows and various Linux distributions.

In the event of a "power fail", the UPS signals the failure of the supply voltage via the integrated USB or RS232 interface, so that a controlled shutdown of the computer system is initiated and valuable data is saved. A script (batch) can also be executed before the system is shut down in order to process own application-relevant processes. The integrated reboot function of the DC UPS automatically initiates the restart of the supplied IPC after the supply voltage has been restored, without the need for time-consuming on-site intervention by a service employee, e.g. in the case of completely self-sufficient computer systems at inaccessible locations.

The software 'UPScom' can send corresponding event e-mails in the event of various events such as loss of connection to the UPS, shutdown of the system or power fail. These preventive measures can reduce or completely prevent downtimes.

UPS controller.

The new UB40.241 40A rated DIN-Rail mounted controller for uninterruptible power supply systems has been launched by PULS Power. The new model is now the most powerful UPS controller in PULS’s range which already includes a variety of models currently providing up to 20A capacity. In combination with a 24Vdc power supply and an external battery pack it enables the reliable bridging of power failures and voltage fluctuations. This can prevent system damage, costly downtime, time-consuming restarts, and the loss of critical data.

Marco van der Linden, Country Manager in Britain for PULS Power, comments, "Our new DC UPS controller doubles the amount of emergency power we can now offer systems designers and integrators ensuring maximum reliability and flexibility to protect critical loads while allowing the use of a comprehensive range of batteries with smart diagnosis and monitoring of battery condition."

Applications include SMART buildings and factories, Industry 4.0, security and CCTV, instrumentation and measuring systems.

While the system power supply provides sufficient voltage the DC-UPS controller will charge the battery bank. Should the supply voltage suddenly fail, the energy stored in the battery is released to the DC bus in a regulated process.

A unique feature of the UB series is the PULS 1-Battery concept. To ensure the longest possible battery life, each 12V battery is charged and monitored separately. This smart function eliminates the need to match batteries. The UB40.241 allows precise charging, testing and optimised usage of the battery capacity.

The control unit can be combined with different battery sizes from 12Ah to 200Ah with a selector on the front of the device making it easy to adjust it to the corresponding battery size. Power output is decoupled from the input to provide separate circuits for buffered and non-buffered loads.

The UB40.241 has various battery diagnostic functions including an early pre-warning signal when the battery is low. This ensures safe and reliable operation of the entire system. Battery charging is temperature-controlled which also has a positive effect on the battery life. It also features a selectable buffer time limiter as well as signal contacts for system "Ready", "Buffering" and "Replace battery". For safety and maintenance reasons, an inhibit-input signal is included to enable phases without enforced buffering.

The PULS UB40.241 has an operating temperature range from -25°C to +70°C, 50% extra output power for up to 5s, has fully international safety agency approvals and a 3-year warranty.

AC/DC converters.

The latest models in the PULS Power PIANO series have been introduced to the market. The PIANO-PIM family have been designed for use in the many industrial applications which only require a basic power supply so that customers do not have to pay for unnecessary control and communication facilities.

Marco van der Linden, UK Country Manager for PULS Power, comments, "Our PIANO range continues the PULS philosophy of offering our customers “more with less”. Our new PIANO-PIM range of power supplies are ideally suited for worldwide applications requiring a simple, basic, cost effective power supply with no compromise on quality. The compact size of the PIM36, PIM60 and PIM90 allows more flexibility in system design while the simple installation provides significant time and cost savings. PULS power supplies continue to set new records in their respective performance classes in the quality-critical functions such as efficiency, lifetime and size."

The PIANO-PIM series offer a cost effective, space-saving, efficient, reliable and durable DIN-Rail mounted AC/DC converters. The 100-240VAC wide range input, 24VDC output units are available in three versions: PIM36 (36W), PIM60 (60W) and PIM90 (90W). With these additions to the already very successful PIANO power supply range PULS now provides users with a complete, cost-oriented, product family with outputs from 30-480W. At ambient temperatures between -10°C and +55°C, the devices work at full power without derating. The PIM90 is also available as an NEC Class 2 version for the US market.

This range uses innovative technology to make savings in cost and space. The single PCB design uses a reduced number of high-quality components, lowering cost, simplifying manufacture and improving reliability. The PIM90 is currently the smallest 90W DIN-Rail power supply on the market. The compact design saves space on the DIN-Rail in the control cabinet and makes them ideally suited for decentralised use in cramped systems or spaces – e.g. building automation.

The high efficiency synchronous rectifier design based on MOSFET technology (90W PIANO achieving over 93.8% at full load and +40°C ambient temperature) reduces the need for system cooling and further increases reliability. With exceptionally low losses even in idle or standby mode at < 0.5W, the PIANO-PIM range particularly is useful for applications in building automation. In building safety systems power supplies often remain in standby mode for days or even weeks. Due to the very low no-load losses in the idle state, considerable energy costs can be saved over the long term.

The high efficiency and optimised thermal design allow polycarbonate housings to be used, reducing weight and providing a robust impact resistant enclosure. The use of a plastic housing means the small, low power PIANO power supplies can be operated without grounding, saving additional installation time and cabling costs.

The PIM60 and PIM90 power supplies are available with either screw terminals or time saving push-in terminals. PULS devices are optimally prepared for automated wiring processes. The PIANO-PIM range meet all international safety agency approvals and are CE marked.

Does your external power supply meet the requirements of Eco Design directive, 2009/125/EC?

Check it online!

Ideal Power offer visitors to their website an easy-to-use ErP II average efficiency calculator tool for external power supplies ensuring the correct selection of ErP II Stage 2 compliant products.

An example of the calculator in use.
Available at the calculator provides confirmation of the target efficiency rating at a glance to engineers, designers and purchasing professionals allowing them to ensure that their application or product conforms to the ErP II requirements. By simply inputting an output voltage and wattage the calculator will use the official formula set by the 278/2009 ErP II compliance in the 2005/32/EC Directive, to provide the average efficiency rate required.

"The second stage of legislation intended to reduce power consumption for electronic equipment has now come into force and there have been numerous changes to the EU’s directives and regulations concerning the efficiency of electronic devices in recent years, particularly concerning standby power.” Comments Craig Eaton, Marketing and Design Manager of Ideal Power. “The Eco Design directive, 2009/125/EC, is the all-embracing directive intended to improve the energy efficiency of all energy related products (ErP). It’s a revision of the directive formerly known as the energy using products (EuP) directive, 2005/32/EC. The goal of this directive is to reduce the energy consumed by ErP by 20%, by 2020. High efficiency external power supplies can help achieve this.”

As part of the ErP directive, EC 278/2009 is the regulation that specifically concerns an external power supply connected to electrical or electronic equipment in a household or office. This regulation restricts an external power supply’s maximum no-load power consumption and average active efficiency of the power supply.

Part of the reason for introducing the requirements in stages is to allow manufacturers time to redesign their products to meet the new constraints. Ideal Power has done exactly that for its range of external power supplies, including the 25HK-AB, 25HK-AJ and 25HK-U series, now available on short lead-times from the company.

Going forward external power supplies must comply with the more stringent Stage II of the ErP directive, under regulation EC 278/2009, in order to qualify for a CE mark. When buying external power supplies, they should come with a statement of compliance for CE marking.

Ideal Power’s Support Engineering Team are available to advise customers about EC 1275/2008 (which relates to the power consumed by electrical or electronic household or office equipment) or EC 617/2013 (which specifically relates to computers and computer servers and welcome all requests to discuss power conversion and supply requirements.

Medical configurable PSU

Excelsys Technologies Xgen Medical Range of power supplies has been enhanced to include 1 x MOPP (Means of Patient Protection) approval from input to earth (ground) for patient connected equipment. Furthermore the improved products now allow customers to isolation test self-configured power supplies from input to output to 6kV DC.

The enhancements include the introduction of Y1 capacitors and Type Testing at 5675V DC (the DC equivalent of 4kV AC), from input to output. Carrying full UL60601-1 and EN60601-1 3rd edition approvals, the range provides low leakage current (less than 150µA available) as well as meeting the stringent creepage and clearance requirements of medical equipment. All products come with the industry leading 3 year warranty.

Dielectric testing is a simple method of verifying the adequacy of electrical insulation to withstand the peak voltages that can occur during transient events. However this can be a destructive test and is generally categorized as a “Type test”. “Type tests” are investigations carried out by Safety Agencies and are intended to prove that the construction of the power supply meets the requirements dictated by the relevant safety standard. However, Reinforced (primary to secondary) Insulation cannot be tested without over-stressing basic insulation on the end product and it is because of this the agencies allow manufacturers to test reinforced insulation separately. This means they are allowed to test transformers and other primary to secondary isolation barriers separately before components are incorporated into the product.

In order to meet customer demand to be able to verify this as part of their production process Excelsys is pleased to announce the release of this enhanced range of medically approved Xgen power supplies. This product has been specifically designed to withstand the DC peak equivalent of the 4kV AC isolation test from primary to secondary. (Note: Refer directly to UL60950-1, C5.2.2 or UL60601-1 2nd Edition Section 20.4 or IEC60601-1 3rd Edition Section 8.8.3 for more information). By selecting this Excelsys product range customers can test in-situ with a DC voltage of 6kV applied across the isolation barrier of a fully assembled power supply. Excelsys will continue to carry out 100% production testing of all primary to secondary isolation barriers on all Xgen products. This will directly address the growing demand from customers to verify the isolation barrier on their application without causing an electrical stress on internal components.

Dermot Flynn, Director of Sales, comments, “Medical electronic systems are a major market for Excelsys and we are pleased to be able to respond to customer requests to be able to carry out dielectric testing of complete systems.“

The Excelsys Xgen series of medically approved power supplies can provide up to 1340W watts of output power with DC voltages in user selectable combinations from 1.5V to 58V each with individual output control. The series has leakage current of under 300µA, and the option of less than 150µA. All outputs are fully floating allowing series/parallel connection of all multiple outputs for non-standard voltages or higher output current. Xgen power supplies may be connected in parallel for higher system power requirements and a 5V bias standby voltage is provided on all models.

Sample products are available immediately and production quantities are available from May 2012.

Excelsys Technologies are market leaders in high efficiency, low profile, customer configurable modular power supplies and offer the highest efficiency, highest power density, highest reliability power solutions for mission critical applications.

In addition to medical electronics typical applications for Excelsys products also include industrial and automation systems, communications, lighting and Hi-Rel COTS applications, telecoms, instrumentation, n+1 and redundant power systems, test and measurement equipment, printing and IT power.
