Convection cooled PSUs.

Excelsys Technologies has announced the availability of new output module for its revolutionary CoolX series of convection cooled modular configurable power supplies. The new CmE bulk power module provides up to 600W power from one module (occupying three slots). The addition of this module greatly increases product and system flexibility while significantly reducing total cost through reduced component count and simplifying configuration and system integration.

Initially available with a 24V output, the bulk power module provides up to 25A output current capability. It is ideal for applications requiring one higher power output with additional lower outputs, which can be configured between 2.5V and 58 V using the existing CoolX modules.

“We have many applications where customers configure a number of outputs in parallel to provide high power outputs,” comments Dermot Flynn, Sales Director of Excelsys Technologies. “We expect that the same will be the case with CoolX and have therefore developed the CmE CoolMod” continues Flynn. “It is a 24V, 600W module and rather than having three isolated outputs to be connected, adjusted and set up to current share etc. customers will now have just one power connection point and a single connection for control etc. This new high power module along with existing output modules allows customers to centralise all their power requirements in a one power supply, greatly simplifying system integration.”

Typical applications
medical clinical diagnostic equipment, medical lasers, dialysis equipment, radiological imaging and clinical chemistry. Industrial test and measurement, industrial machines, automation equipment, printing, telecommunications, audio equipment and high reliability harsh industrial electronics, radar, (Naval, Ground Based), communications, test and measurement

Ultra-Compact 1,000W power supply.

Excelsys Technologies, XSolo family of 1U high, ultra-compact single output modular power supplies offer designers of critical systems an off the shelf high reliability power solution. The most common way of increasing system reliability is to deploy a redundant power solution. This is much more cost effective that the alternative, which is to over-engineer the power supply using high grade components which are rated for a higher degree of thermal and electrical stress. All Excelsys XSolo power supplies are designed to operate in N + 1 redundant mode with no additional components and have I2C digital control for communicating to operators and system hosts. Redundant power systems are found in emergency, medical, security and communications systems, server rooms and data-centres.
To implement a redundant power system, a power supply is specified that can support the load by itself and second, identical power supply, is connected in parallel providing a system that is more reliable than its component parts. This is because the application will continue to function even in the event of one power supply becoming non-operational. This power supply configuration is commonly referred to as an N + 1 redundant system and may be extended to N + X depending on how critical the application is.

There are cost and size penalties to both methods of providing a high reliability power source. However a redundant system does provide greater ultimate reliability.

Key considerations in implementing an N + 1 redundant power system include;
  1. All N units must be rated to support full load.
  2. Failure of any one component must not make the system fail.
  3. If any component fails this must be brought to the operator or system administrator’s notice so that it can be replaced to ensure ongoing redundancy.
  4. Changing individual units must not make the system fail, referred to as “hot swap”

An effectively implemented N+1 redundant system will provide a much more reliable system design, where single fault conditions will have no impact on the overall performance of the application.

The high efficiency N + 1 configurable Excelsys Xsolo power supply is available in 2 package types, delivering a market leading convection cooled 504W in an open-frame U-channel form-factor and up to 1008W in an enclosed fan cooled chassis. Both models carry a 5 year warranty.

PSUs meet medical performance specifications.

The Xsolo power supplies, from Excelsys Technologies, have been designed and tested to meet both the B and BF type requirements per the IEC 60601 standard.  This makes them suitable for applications that need these levels of performance for power supplies used in medical applications. Excelsys’ testing procedures were performed in accordance with requirements for B (body) and BF (body floating) medical end products. The goal of the testing was to help manufacturers optimize their medical designs to achieve the highest performance and safety levels, enabling first-pass success during agency approvals.

B-type applied parts, which are not typically attached to the patient for long periods of time, include LED lighting, medical lasers, medical imaging (e.g., MRI), hospital beds and phototherapy equipment. Type BF applied parts have conductive long-term contact with a patient. These can include incubators, therapy systems patient heating and cooling equipment, ultrasound monitoring, cardiac monitoring, as well as long-term diagnostic equipment and blood pressure monitoring. To demonstrate that its power supplies are suitable for these applications, Excelsys tested both its basic and low-leakage Xsolo models (XS1000-48N-000 and XS1000-48N-004) to the 60601 standard using an AC source providing 264 VAC at 63 Hz to recreate worse-case conditions.  Copies of the test report are available on request.

“Excelsys Technologies developed the XS series of power supplies with medical applications in mind,” said Gary Duffy, Excelsys CEO. “By testing our power supplies to the 60601 B and BF specification, we help manufacturers with the task of certifying the end medical device as an applied part for their intended applications with respect to safety and leakage currents.”

Manufacturers often need to incorporate multiple power supplies into a given system and still meet stringent requirements. To help meet these requirements, Excelsys also offers low-leakage power supply versions, which enable the incorporation of multiple power supplies into various medical-type rated systems, depending on the application.  As a world-class power supply manufacturer
