Power supplies with PMBus Communication.

Excelsys Technologies has announced that its revolutionary CoolX600 Series of 600W convection-cooled modular power supplies is now available with the option of PMBus communication.

PMBus offers system builders a standard way to communicate with power converters over a digital communications bus by providing a full set of commands and data structures required by power control and management components. The CoolX Series PMBus interface facilitates the communication of operating parameters such as output voltage, output current and internal temperature with other PMBus enabled devices. It also provides the remote adjustment of parameters such as output voltage level, current limit as well as control features such as power supply and individual output enable/inhibit.

The convection-cooled CoolX600 Series is the latest user configurable modular power supply from Excelsys Technologies which delivers an incredible 600W without fan assisted cooling from a very compact 8.5 x 4.5 x 1U package. The only fanless modular power supply on the market, the CoolX600 offers system designers best in class performance for efficiency and reliability in addition to the most comprehensive feature set and specifications available. Typical efficiency is greater than 93% and due to its excellent thermal performance offers typically 25% longer lifetime than competitors. An industry leading 5 year warranty ensures quality, reliability and the lowest total cost of ownership.

Enhanced thermal performance may be obtained with system fans or additional external conduction cooling resulting in even higher system reliability, Other features include 4KV input surge immunity, and the ability to withstand input voltages of up to 300VAC making it ideal for use in remote locations and those subject to input voltage disturbances. Additional features include SEMI F47 compliance, and operation at 5000m altitude. A 25W standby power output, offering effectively another output, for system intelligence, cooling fans, displays etc. is a standard feature.

The CoolX600 is available with full safety certifications to UL/EN60950 and UL/EN60601 3rd and 4th Edition (EMC) for both industrial and medical applications. Stand-out medical features include BF rating (Body Floating), dual fusing, 2 x MOPP, <300ua br="" current.="" leakage="">
The CoolX600 can be populated with up to 4 CoolMods, providing up to 4 isolated DC outputs ranging from 3.0V to 58.0V. Following the tradition of Excelsys, the CoolX600 offers customers the greatest flexibility and is completely user and field configurable. Outputs can be configured to the required set point voltages and connected in parallel of series for higher output current and/or higher output voltages.

The Excelsys CoolX600 offers system integrators unparalled flexibility with analogue and digital management with PMBus monitoring and control capability and is user field configurable with Plug and Play power. All outputs are isolated and may be connected in series or parallel to achieve higher output voltages or currents. Mounting options include base, side and Din Rail alternatives

Dermot Flynn, Sales Director of Excelsys Technologies, comments, “Adding PMBus communication to the already exceptional CoolX power supply allows medical, industrial and defence systems developers the option of deploying intelligent 600 watt, high reliability, silent in operation power solution. Our revolutionary designs and feature sets continues to keep us ahead of our competitors.”
Typical applications include medical clinical diagnostic equipment, medical lasers, dialysis equipment, radiological imaging and clinical chemistry. Industrial test and measurement, industrial machines, automation equipment, printing, telecommunications, audio equipment and high reliability harsh industrial electronics, radar, (Naval, Ground Based), communications, test and measurement

Other products in the Excelsys range include the UltiMod and Xgen user configurable modular power supplies suitable of applications including, industrial, medical, laser, communications, IT, wafer fabrication, optical inspection, wire bonding, and automated test equipment.

PSU manufacturer joins PMBus.

Excelsys Technologies has signed the PMBus™ adopter agreement and is now a full member of the Systems Management Interface Forum (SMIF). Excelsys currently offers the PMBus interface on its Xsolo series of 1U, single-output PSUs (Power Supply Units).
In becoming a full member of the SMIF, the company aims to expand its role in the development of future, standardized digital power management platforms.

“We are excited to become a SMIF member, which allows us to join forces and share ideas with other top electronics companies and customers who have adopted the PMBus standard,” says Gary Duffy, Excelsys Technologies’ Chief Executive Officer. “Adopting this open industry standard will facilitate power management at the systems level and will enable us to offer new features and functionality in upcoming product introductions."

Typical applications for Excelsys power supplies include industrial applications, such as test and measurement, automation, semiconductor production, robotics, printing equipment and lasers, and medical imaging and diagnostic equipment. As a world-class power supply manufacturer, Excelsys has a global applications team to support and assist customers with their specific system needs.

Open architecture communications protocol facilitates monitoring in automated systems.

Excelsys Technologies has announced the availability of PMBus communications on its Xsolo series of 1U, single output power supply units (PSUs). Xsolo units equipped with an optional I2C digital interface can be remotely monitored by system supervisory equipment utilizing industry standard PMBus protocols.

The XSolo family is offered in a both convection-cooled 504W open-frame U-channel form-factor model (6.8 W/cu.in.) and an enclosed, fan-cooled chassis model that delivers up to 1008W (13.6 W/cu.in.). Capable of achieving 92% efficiency, these ultra-compact and rugged PSUs meet the exacting requirements of medical, industrial, IT and military COTs applications. Additionally, both models carry a five-year warranty.

“The addition of PMBus capabilities to our Xsolo platform is an answer to customer requests for connectivity at a systems level,” said Gary Duffy, Excelsys CEO. “The remote monitoring of system power supply voltage, current and temperature can provide system status and remote health monitoring functionality for our customers’ end products.”

The XSolo family features dual safety agency certification: EN60950-1 for industrial applications and EN60601-1, 2nd and 3rd edition for medical applications—fully meeting the stringent creepage and clearance, 4kV ac. isolation and >300 uA leakage current requirements. The XSolo family also meets the voltage dip and interruption requirements of SEMI F47, as well as the environmental conditions per MIL-STD-810. In addition, the products are compliant with all relevant EMC emission and immunity standards.

The XSolo platform offers system integrators with a host of standard features, including variable fan speed, 12V/300mA isolated bias supply, remote ON/OFF, output voltage control and parallel operation for higher power applications. Nominal output voltages are 24V and 48V with wide adjustment ranges and user-defined setpoints.
