USB-C connectors.

A FeedThrough version of the industry-standard USB-C connector which can carry data and power on a single cable has been announced by Cliff Electronics. The Cliff USB-C connector has no up or down orientation and the connector cannot be mis-inserted.

Dan Walker, General Sales Manager, of Cliff Electronics, commented; “USB-C has been widely adopted as the standard connector for supplying data and power between devices and systems. With our new FeedThrough version, all users have to do is line up the connector properly to make the connection, it never needs to be rotated for correct operation - the "right way" is always up.”

Able to connect to, and power devices including a native DisplayPort, MHL, or HDMI device, the 24-pin USB connector system has a double-sided rotationally-symmetrical design. Connection to both sides of the connector is made using off-the-shelf, standard USB-C male leads.

In common with the rest of Cliff’s extensive range of FeedThrough connectors, the new USB-C version may be mounted into an industry standard XLR connector panel cut out, simplifying system design and improving product aesthetics. The USB-C connector may also be fitted to Cliff’s purpose built 19” rack panels providing systems integrators with fast and convenient system assembly.

Cliff’s XLR format FeedThrough connectors take advantage of the standard 24mm panel cut out widely used in audio and broadcast systems and which is finding increasing popularity instrumentation, medical and industrial applications due to the format’s flexibility, security and reliability. The new Cliff USB-C connecter may be mounted to the front or rear of control panels and supplied with plain or countersunk mounting holes.

Augmented Reality (AR) “Human 4.0”

Aegis Software has announced FactoryOptix®, a unique technology that integrates human assembly operations directly into the automated Industry 4.0 environment, using Augmented Reality as a an additional method to deliver FactoryLogix paperless work-instructions.

The human operator is the most flexible production asset, and yet is excluded from most discussions and implementations of manufacturing automation, leaving uncertainty and doubt in the accuracy of KPIs, and risk in operational decision-making. Aegis FactoryLogix, IIoT-driven MES, brings two digital worlds together in a single solution, for automation featuring the IPC Connected Factory Exchange (CFX), and for human assembly, test and inspection operations featuring Augmented Reality (AR). Unlike other AR demonstrations in manufacturing, FactoryOptix utilizes the same internal digital product model to provide all of the data and documentation needed for AR to work, meaning that cost of ownership and configuration is unchanged from the existing best-in-class FactoryLogix paperless work instruction solution.

FactoryOptix can double the productivity of human operators, simply by enabling the use of both hands at all times, not having to pick up barcode readers, use keyboards or a mouse, nor even having to look away to read work-instructions from a screen. The latest AR hardware has good battery life and is light enough to allow long-term usage throughout the day without fatigue, in the same way as a heads-up display that features in many cars today. The view through the AR glasses provides critical step-by-step instructions, with confirmation from the operator that each operation is done. Feedback from the operator is captured simply using voice recognition for commands and actions, with barcodes read by the glasses automatically when instructed to do so.

The automated environment for the operator is stress-free, with less dependency on narrowly-focused specific skills, meaning that operators are more flexible to work on different tasks, products and variants, without risk of “memory-driven defects”. Human operators become more broadly skilled, providing flexibility in the factory to adapt to changing manufacturing demands as is to be expected in the high-mix Industry 4.0 environment.

Industry 4.0 digitalization is incomplete without integrated Augmented Reality. FactoryOptix as a part of FactoryLogix, again uniquely differentiates Aegis software to deliver genuine Smart Factory benefits.

Accelerometer calibration.

MB Dynamics (MB) has announced the global market launch of its Win475 MULTI-DUT CRASH-CAL (MDCC) automated accelerometer calibration system.

The MB Dynamics Win475 MDCC increases metrology center throughput and productivity by facilitating the accurate, efficient, and simultaneous automated calibrations of up to eight (8) single axis piezoresistive accelerometers (DUT’s) of the same model and type, over a frequency range of 10 to 4000 Hz, complying with SAEJ211, SAE2570, and other global automotive industry test standards. Its versatile design further supports the automated single calibrations of non-piezoresistive DUT’s, including piezoelectric, IEPE, voltage and velocity sensors, over frequencies from 5 Hz to 15 kHz. These combined features can help calibration technicians to achieve a measurable 70%-time savings over single-DUT calibration methods with greater accuracy and repeatability.

As a complete turnkey system, the industry-exclusive design of the Win 475 MDCC automated accelerometer calibration system seamlessly integrates MB’s own Model CAL25AB air bearing exciter, together with its Model 407-8X multi-channel signal conditioner; MB 500VI power amplifier; and proprietary MB Win475 MDCC software, further supported by an industry standard NI DAQ card.

Other system components include an internal removable reference (REF) accelerometer with 100 mV/g sensitivity and usable frequency range to 15 kHz, further traceable to national standards and ISO 17025; an eight-DUT test instrument mounting fixture (TIMF) adaptor plate; a single-DUT TIMF; a 475PCM module; a Windows 10 PC, monitor, keyboard and printer; a calibration accessory kit; user manuals; and system installation, start-up and training support.

As a multi-DUT automated calibration system, the MB Win475 MDCC quickly and efficiently measures and saves relevant accelerometer characteristics, such as ZMO, Zin and Zout, as well as input & output impedance values. Its versatility and flexibility allow an end-user to choose from among seven (7) individual (six internal, one external) high-precision resistors for shunt calibration. The system also reads onboard sensor electronic identifications, such as 1-Wire Dallas ID memory chips or TEDS piezoelectric accelerometers (per IEEE 1451). The MB MDCC system may be further integrated into customer-specified databases for additional automation capabilities with reduced calibration data transference errors.

The automation afforded by the MB Win475 MDCC mitigates the risks of human errors inherent to manual accelerometer calibration systems, thereby freeing up technicians for other measurement tasks. The increased frequency of accelerometer calibrations afforded by system further helps technicians to improve in-laboratory test data quality and productivity while reducing documentation errors. The system has proven especially useful within crash test and automotive safety test laboratory environments, in applications where larger volumes of piezoresistive accelerometers are in use, therefore requiring more frequent recalibrations. In addition, the MB Win475 MDCC provides a number of value-added end-user benefits, including bottom-line cost savings, with its elimination of outsourced calibration service needs; implementations of more efficient and effective in-house calibration processes; and simplifications of internal record-keeping accuracy, further aiding in ISO audit compliance.

The Win475 MDCC automated accelerometer calibration system is also accompanied by full technical support, with in-house customer training provided by the 40-year calibration experts at MB Dynamics.

City air quality monitoring.

OTT HydroMet is installing fifteen automatic weather stations as part of the English University of Sheffield’s Urban Flows Observatory, which is led by the Departments of Civil and Structural Engineering, and Automatic Control and Systems Engineering (ACSE). The monitoring sites are conveniently located at Sheffield schools, and data from the stations will contribute to the project’s wider environmental monitoring objectives which include the free publication of data.

Like most cities, Sheffield faces challenges connected with air quality, carbon emissions, traffic congestion and a changing climate. The Urban Flows Observatory is therefore working to better understand energy use across the city by combining a variety of environmental and atmospheric data sources to create a dynamic model of the flows of energy and resources in the city. Naturally, weather conditions play an important role in this, so OTT Hydromet was commissioned to build a meteorological monitoring network.

Each weather station will include a Lufft WS700 low-maintenance, low-power instrument for measuring wind speed and direction, temperature, precipitation amount and intensity, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and solar radiation. Each station also includes a low cost carbon dioxide sensor as well as a battery powered OTT netDL 1000 data logger, which transmits real-time data to a centralised platform.

Steve Jubb is the Chief Technical Officer for the Urban Flows Observatory at the University of Sheffield. He is responsible for delivering the platform of systems that will enable the observatory to gather, process and present the data streams needed by the observatory and associated research projects. He says: “Meteorological data is critically important if we are to better understand the factors affecting air quality for example. However, localised weather data will be important in its own right; helping us to monitor trends, compare locations with and without green space, and to investigate potential urban heat island effects.”

The location of the weather stations at selected schools has ensured a good spread of monitoring locations across the city and will hopefully encourage pupils to access the data. This highlights another key feature of the project which is to engage citizens in the gathering and understanding of environmental data.

The Urban Flows Observatory is part of a wider network of Urban Observatories, a collaborative venture led by the Universities of Newcastle, Bristol and Sheffield, and part of UKCRIC (UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure and Cities), which is working to address issues of infrastructure development.

The installation of the weather stations will be completed during the October half-term and Steve hopes to have the data publically available by the end of the year.

Safety with steam valves.

Many machines run at full steam - but with compressed air this statement takes on a completely different meaning. Machines that are operated with compressed air require special protection in order to absorb high pressure surges and protect the system from damage. In this case also, we are your reliable partner when it comes to safety.

With the flange safety valves 355 and 455, Goetze offers a wide range of options for almost every steam application. Operating the systems efficiently and boosting profitability is becoming more and more important. Producing steam is very expensive. This makes it all the more important to operate plants with a high degree of efficiency and minimal steam loss. Examples of how it should not be done include dry cleaners and laundries, where you can almost always see safety valves blowing off. This blowing-off steam represents a financial loss. Efficiency begins with the treatment of the water used for generating steam and continues with the steam generators, heat exchangers, condensate drainage, piping, insulation and protection of the steam system. The correct configuration and use of suitable safety valves play a key role in system efficiency.

The spheroidal graphite cast iron model 355 offers reliable protection at pressures from 0.2 to 40 bar in a temperature range from -10°C to +350°C. The full lift safety valve protects pressure vessels, systems and steam boiler plants. They are used primarily in fire extinguisher technology, pump protection and industrial plants.

Depending on the version, the valve is gastight or double gastight and can therefore be used for flammable, toxic or hazardous media or in cases where counter pressure prevail. In addition, the double gastight version is now also available with stainless steel bellows or with D/G/H approval and elastomer diaphragm.

Our full lift safety valve (455) made of stainless steel provides protection in all sizes, ranging from small applications requiring a nominal diameter of only DN 15 up to large applications up to large applications where our DN100 safety valve weighing approx. 100 kg is called for. Although particularly suitable for steam applications, this valve can also be used to safeguard biogas plants, shipbuilding applications and systems in the chemical and petrochemical industry.

The opening and closing function of the safety valve, remains stable for a long period of time, even under the influence of a possible external or intrusive back pressure in the outlet pipe and despite a high discharge coefficient.

Extensive 3D flow simulation test on functional samples on the test bench proved that the increase in volume and a flow-optimized contour of the outlet housing best meet this requirement. Even with back pressures that exceed 35% of the safety valve set pressure, it makes sense to use a stainless steel bellows that acts on the set pressure independently of the back pressure.

Differential pressure sensor.

The EE600 from E+E Elektronik measures the differential pressure in the range 0...1000 Pa or 0...10 000 Pa with an accuracy of ±0.5 % of the full scale. The sensor is dedicated for HVAC applications and can be employed for air and all non-flammable and non-aggressive gases.

The unit is ideal for reliable differential pressure measurement in ventilation and air conditioning systems or for filter monitoring. The sensor is available in two versions for up to 1000 Pa or 10 000 Pa. Four different measuring ranges (0…250 / 500 / 750 / 1000 Pa or 0…2500 / 5000 / 7500 / 10 000 Pa) are selectable via DIP switches. The piezo-resistive, no flow-through pressure sensing element stands for outstanding long-term stability.

The measured data is available as voltage and current signals at the spring loaded terminals. The large, backlit graphic display shows the reading in [Pa], [mbar], [inch WC] or [kPa].

The robust IP65 / NEMA 4 enclosure with external mounting holes facilitates mounting the sensor with closed cover. This saves time and also protects the electronics from pollution and mechanical damage during installation. For US requirements, the enclosure features a knockout for a ½”conduit fitting.

The EE600 offers various adjustment and configuration options. Via DIP switches on the electronics board, the user can set the pressure measuring ranges, the output signal, the response time as well as the units and the backlight for the display. Also a zero and span point adjustment can be easily performed with push buttons.

Barcode printers.

Printronix Auto ID has announced the addition of the T4000 RFID Thermal Barcode Printer to its rapidly growing line of high-performance RFID printers. The T4000 prints and encodes on both standard and on-metal RFID labels and tags making it a universal solution for almost all RFID applications.

The T4000 RFID printer was designed from the ground-up to print and encode on-metal and traditional labels, making it the ideal solution for RFID asset tagging of tools and equipment used in healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, IT, and service yard industries. On-metal tags typically include a foam insulator and a metal foil backing that makes them incompatible with most standard RFID printer/encoders, but the T4000 was engineered to handle the media with ease. And, because accuracy is critical in every application, the T4000 will back-up and completely overstrike RFID labels that fail to encode properly.

“The T4000 is a great addition to our rapidly expanding line of RFID printers at a price point that offers great value to our customers,” said Andy Edwards, Director of Product Management. “The T4000 was designed for ease of use, high productivity, and the flexibility of printing on-metal or traditional RFID tags. We are committed to providing our customers with the same versatility and reliability in our RFID printers that they expect from all Printronix printers”

The T4000 is available with and without RFID capability. Due to its compact size, the T4000 fits into environments where space is limited but enterprise-level performance and RFID printing is a requirement. Despite its small stature, the T4000 can easily print up to 5,000 labels or tags a day at an impressive ten inches per second.

Designed for today’s high-tech applications, the T4000 fits seamlessly into any environment with multiple connectivity options, remote printer management tools and automated alerts that keep operations functioning at optimum efficiency and productivity. The T4000 RFID comes standard with Ethernet, USB host, USB device and Serial connectivity. State-of-the-art versions of WiFi and Bluetooth can also be ordered as optional features.

Like all Printronix Auto ID industrial label printers, the T4000 RFID is built on their exclusive Printronix System Architecture (PSA) platform which simplifies printer replacement and installation. Users and IT professionals will appreciate the nine thermal printer language emulations, embedded webpage, remote printer management tool, and a user interface that is common to all Printronix industrial printers.

Easy to operate; the T4000 includes a bi-fold door that allows users to change media and ribbon in tight spaces and the illuminated 3.5-inch color display provides adequate light and easy navigation under any conditions. To minimize media changes, the easy side-loading label and ribbons spindles support 8-inch media rolls and 450-meter ribbons.

Spectrum analysers.

Anritsu Corporation has expanded its Spectrum Master MS2760A ultraportable spectrum analyser series with extended broadband frequency coverage from 9 kHz – 170 GHz, as well as introduced a new series of higher sensitivity models – the Spectrum Master MS2762A - with coverage from 6 GHz to 170 GHz for the most demanding sensitivity requirements.

This family of tablet-driven, pocket-sized solutions combines flexibility and portability with best-in-class dynamic range, allowing design and production engineers to perform basic spectrum measurements, such as channel power, occupied bandwidth, adjacent channel power, and harmonic measurements, on CW signals up to 170 GHz. Together, the Spectrum Master MS276xA family of ultraportable spectrum analysers now provides a full suite of cost-efficient verification tools for a growing number of emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications.

With the addition of two new Spectrum Master MS2760A models and eight introductory Spectrum Master MS2762A instruments, the Spectrum Master MS276xA family of ultraportable spectrum analysers are direct-connect solutions that offer superior dynamic range of typically 108 dB at 70 GHz. The Spectrum Master MS2762A high sensitivity models have typical DANL as low as -141 dBm from 6 GHz to 90 GHz, covering numerous bands starting from midway through the C band all the way through the E band. Above 90 GHz, the typical DANL performance remains superior at -136 dBm to 110 GHz; -129 dBm between 110 and 145 GHz; and -122 dBm between 145 and 170 GHz. This performance allows engineers to see more low-level signals, making the spectrum analysers well suited for numerous applications, including radio astronomy in the D band.

The lower noise floor allows the Spectrum Master MS276xA family to conduct accurate spectrum mask testing of mmWave, point-to-point radios during production. Amplitude accuracy is typically ±1 dB, which provides engineers with greater measurement confidence and improves overall product performance. With a sweep speed of less than 24 seconds (typical, processor speed dependent) over the full 6 GHz to 170 GHz frequency range, the new models shorten test times.

The ultraportable design enables improved accuracy and sensitivity for mmWave measurements by allowing the USB spectrum analysers to be connected directly to the device under test (DUT). This eliminates the need for calibrating external mixers or changing setups to view a different frequency band. Removing banded external mixers also simplifies test setup and conducting measurements.

Expanded OTA testing can be conducted with the ultraportable spectrum analysers, compared to bulky spectrum analysers or power meters with limited power range. They are also 30% less than the cost of traditional mmWave bench spectrum analyzers.

Remote measurements can be made via USB extenders, making the ultraportable spectrum analysers well suited for applications in which tests, such as antenna or path loss measurements, are conducted from a distance. Anritsu has designed the Spectrum Master MS276xA 170 GHz ultraportable spectrum analysers with an advanced GUI that is highly responsive and operates much faster, as well.

The new Spectrum Master MS276xA family provides advantages in many R&D and production applications requiring standard power and CW testing. Among the environments are automotive radar, microwave radios, and mmWave applications above 110 GHz, including object detection radar, radio astronomy, high-resolution military radars and antenna beam pattern testing (in-chamber and outdoors).

5G for industry in Europe.

With its campus networks, Deutsche Telekom offers an infrastructure for the smart factory of tomorrow. Together with partners from industry, Europe’s largest telecommunications company wants to further expand its 5G ecosystem for industry. In process automation, Deutsche Telekom is now cooperating with Endress+Hauser.

The aim of the cooperation is to develop joint offers in the field of measurement and automation technology for the process industry. This involves the integration of measuring instruments and accessories into the next generation of mobile communication networks as well as digital services based on them. Both companies have signed a corresponding memorandum of understanding and are now working on a coordinated timetable.

Endress+Hauser is one of the first manufacturers to equip its field devices with mobile communication modules and to connect existing installations to 5G networks via newly developed HART gateways. This enables a large number of instruments to transmit a wealth of process and device data in parallel and in real time. These can, for example, be used in cloud applications for predictive maintenance of process plants.

Matthias Altendorf
“In addition to the actual measured values, our instruments record a wealth of information from the process and about the sensor,” says Matthias Altendorf, CEO of Endress+Hauser (pictured right). “5G campus networks open up a second signal path that is independent of the plant’s control system and thus make it possible to tap this potential. This will enable us to link value chains more closely across company boundaries and make industrial processes more efficient.”

“Building a complete 5G ecosystem for industry will accelerate the pace of digitalization in industry,” explains Claudia Nemat, member of the Deutsche Telekom Board of Management, Technology and Innovation. “We look forward to working with renowned and experienced partners.”

In addition to the partnership with network supplier Ericsson, the telecommunications company now also cooperates with E&K Automation, a manufacturer of driverless transport systems, and Konica Minolta, which offers augmented reality glasses, among other products.

An automation pioneer passes!

The death has been announced of Leonard W. Moore who was founder and owner of Moore Industries-International, Inc. He passed away on September 6, 2019, at the age of 85.

In 2009 he was inducted into the ISA’s revered group of Honorary Members - individuals whose support of, and/or contributions to, the advancement of the arts and sciences of instrumentation, systems, and automation are deserving of special recognition.

Len was born November 26th, 1933 in Hazelton, Iowa, where he attended elementary through high school. At the age of 16 he graduated high school and then attended Iowa State University where he obtained a BS in Electrical Engineering.

After graduating college Len entered the Army in 1953 as a weapons guidance specialist and spent time at Fort Sill, OK and Fort Bliss, TX. He then trained and taught soldiers how to operate, calibrate and repair various guidance and artillery weapon systems. This was when Len realized he had a passion for instruments and control circuits.

In 1968 he founded Moore Industries-International, Inc. in North Hills, CA. Starting out in a small office with one employee and a very small budget, Len set out to design the most rugged industrial instrument solutions that he knew the industry needed. He used to say that at Moore Industries “we are an engineering company that solves customer’s problems by manufacturing bulletproof solutions.”

Beginning with one instrument, the SCT Signal Converter and Isolator, Len and his “troops” (the term that he used for the company’s employees) went on to design, build and support more than 225 different products that isolate, protect, convert, alarm, monitor, control and interface with any industrial or automation control and monitoring system. Len often said, “the best compliment we can get from our customers is that they forgot about our products or solutions because they performed so well that they just plain forgot they were ever installed.” The resulting rugged M1 Tank design can be seen in most of the company’s products that are enveloped in solid aluminum cases instead of fragile plastic or polycarbonate housings.

More than 50 years after its inception, Moore Industries’ world headquarters is still prospering and remains in North Hills, CA. The company continues to manufacture 100% of its products at this USA location, something Len insisted upon. With two acquisitions, more than 19 industry associated patents, 200 employees and remote offices located in Great Britain, The Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and China, the company continues to engineer, design, manufacture and support existing and new products for worldwide process control and automation customers.

May he rest in peace.

Camera process data directly.

The Ensenso XR is the first stereo vision camera offered by IDS that processes 3D data directly in the FPGA. The 3D camera system is therefore particularly suitable for computing-intensive applications such as bin picking or in-line measurements. The camera family initially consists of XR30 and XR36 models. They are very robust thanks to IP65/67 protection class, feature 1.6 MP Sony sensors and can detect objects at working distances of up to 5 metres.

Since the camera calculates 3D data itself, a high-performance industrial PC is no longer required. The transfer of result data instead of raw data also reduces the load on the network considerably. Multi-camera systems and other computing-intensive applications particularly benefit from these features. Thanks to the WiFi interface, wireless data transmission is optionally available. "This is particularly useful for setup and maintenance processes, or when cabling is difficult or cost-intensive," explains Martin Hennemann, product manager and 3D image processing specialist at IDS.

Both the X and XR series consist of a powerful projector unit with 100 Watt LED power consumption and two uEye cameras whose mounting distance to the projector can be varied according to the user’s requirements. Using FlexView2 technology with the XR36, accurate and fast acquisition of image details goes hand in hand. The data rate of the XR series can compete with a powerful Core i7 CPU. The introduction of variants with 5 MP sensors is planned for Q4/2019. Like all other models in the Ensenso camera series, the Ensenso XR is easy to set up and operate using the corresponding software development kit.

Easy, Low-Cost and Space-Saving 5G NR Fading Tests with a Single Unit.

The Radio Communication Test Station MT8000A now with upgraded 5G Protocol Test functions has been announced by Anritsu. The upgrade uses NR (New Radio) Fading software when implementing built-in baseband fading tests, making the MT8000A to provide support for 3GPP TS 38.521-4 B.1/B.2 V15.0.0-compliant 5G NR channel (TDL) model tests using NR Fading software implementing built-in baseband fading tests.

A fading test simulates the actual radio-wave propagation environment and is required for development of mobile devices. Previously, an external 5G RF fading simulator was required, and this is now implemented as an internal fader in the MT8000A, supporting either 2CC 4x4 MIMO tests with one MT8000A unit, or 8CC 2x2 MIMO tests with two units.

As a result, Protocol Test set-up in a fading environment is simpler and elimination of external test equipment as well as compatibility with existing protocol functions helps cut development costs.

Mobile-terminal development requires 3GPP-compliant testing and evaluation to assure interoperability. These tests are not limited to static communications protocols and RF evaluations between mobiles and base stations, but also include Radio Resource Management (RRM) tests simulating a moving mobile unit, as well as evaluations, in a fading environment.

The MT8000A is for mobile-terminal vendors requiring efficient tests with good cost-performance covering a wide range of conditions. It is an all-in-one test platform for RF, Protocol, and Beam tests, as well as for beam-forming evaluations. In addition to supporting functions for simulating base-station NSA and SA modes required for development of 5G chipsets and terminals, it also supports the latest technologies, such as 4x4 MIMO for increasing data transmission speeds in the Sub-6 GHz band as well as 8CC for implementing wideband mmWave.

The MT8000A covers the key frequency bands used by the first 5G services, such as the Sub-6 GHz band (FR1) frequencies of 2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4.5 GHz, etc., and the mmWave band (FR2) frequencies of 28 GHz, 39 GHz, etc.

The easy-to-use interface coupled with comprehensive RF measurement and NR fading software makes it easy to configure a reasonably priced cost-effective test environment.

Optical rotary torque.

Sensor Technology has set new benchmark performance standards for optical rotary torque transducers, with the launch of the digital ORT 230/240 series. These new optical rotary torque sensors are ideal for applications when the demand is for low torque and/or high bandwidth, providing precise, dynamic measurement of rotary and static torque of less than 100Nm and for bandwidths of up to 50kHz.

The new ORT 230/240 devices replace Sensor Technology’s E200 ORT series, benefiting from all-new electronics that deliver significant gains in resolution, frequency response, reduced sensor current consumption and faster digital data throughput.

The high speed capability comes from an inherently low inertia, since the electronics are not fixed to the shaft, while non-contact operation ensures a long and reliable life (backed up by Sensor Technology’s lifetime warranty) with high accuracy. The optical operating principle also ensures excellent noise immunity.

TorqSense ORT 230 series sensors provide fixed voltage or current analogue outputs – one for torque and one for either speed or power. The TorqSense ORT 240 provides two user selectable voltage or current analogue outputs – one for torque and the other for either speed, power or peak torque – plus digital outputs including RS232, CANbus and USB for interfacing with modern instrumentation and laptops. The ORT 240 enables users to connect up to 10 transducers via USB, and transducer configuration software for making changes to transducer variables.

Features of both devices include self-diagnostics to report if the transducer’s torque, speed ratings or calibration date have been exceeded, while inbuilt sensors monitor shaft temperature for better compensation and accuracy. The device also offers a simple ‘sensor status’ output.

Complementing these products is Sensor Technology’s TorqView software, providing an easy-to-use advanced torque monitoring package for Windows PCs to assist with data display and recording. It offers real time chart plotting, and is compatible with both Matlab and Excel. Further, LabVIEW VIs are available for users to design their own process control applications, and DLLs are available for users who wish to write their own custom software.

These latest optical rotary torque sensors are an important extension to the Sensor Technology torque monitoring range, and offer an alternative solution when low torque or bandwidth requirements preclude the use of the more cost-efficient SAW-based TorqSense products.

Optical rotary torque sensors use a pair of gratings attached a short distance apart on a strain-sensitive shaft to modulate a light source. As torque is applied to the shaft, a slight twist results which changes the alignment of the gratings and thus varies the light transmitted through to a detector. The use of this technique results in a transducer which is able to detect torque bi-directionally, and which has a fast mechanical and electrical response, low inertia and complete freedom from brushes or complex electronics.

The absence of brush gear allows high-speed operation with a continuous rating up to 30,000rpm standard. Further increases in rpm are available depending upon shaft size. The torque shaft is of low compliance ½° maximum torsion deflection on the smaller transducers and ¼° maximum on the larger transducers at full-scale deflection. Any full scale torque can be specified within the range 10mNm to 100Nm.

Mobile water level monitor.

A new all-in-one wireless water level logger from OTT HydroMet, can be used for the remote monitoring of surface or groundwater. Simple to set up and run with a mobile phone, the OTT ecoLog 1000 has been designed for long-term applications, even in remote locations, and is able to issue warnings automatically to help manage or avoid the problematic conditions that can occur when water levels rise.

“Our customers are already walking around with an incredible piece of technology in their pockets,” comments OTT’s UK managing director Nigel Grimsley. “So it makes sense to exploit the value of this by developing an App that can be used to set up, manage and view data, and by designing a water level monitor that communicates wirelessly with a mobile phone or tablet.”

The App runs on mobile devices supporting iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows 10, and with integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication, the ecoLog 1000 can pair with a mobile device up to 10 metres away, which significantly enhances simplicity and onsite safety. Further enhancements to onsite operations include the ability to quickly change batteries, and even shorten cable lengths if necessary.

An on-board SIM card enables the monitor to feed data to secure servers, and users are provided with password protected access to the readings via the App. However, in addition to viewing and downloading data, the App also enables users to manage the ecoLog’s configuration remotely.

For monitoring network operators, a further App-based solution, HydroMet Cloud, offers web-based data visualisation of live monitoring data in user-defined maps, graphs, tables etc.

With a rugged stainless steel probe (also suitable for brackish and saline water) and a very stable ceramic pressure cell, the ecoLog 1000 is designed for challenging applications. Data are encrypted with automatic retries if transmission fails, so users can expect continuous data streams with alerts when water approaches user-set threshold levels.

Commenting on the applications for the instrument, Nigel says: “A wide range of people would benefit from remote water level data and alerts; these include government agencies, flood managers, local communities, highway managers, rail network operators, water companies and water resource managers, as well as consultants, academics and environmental researchers.

“For all of these groups, easy access to remote data will save a great deal of time and money by preventing unnecessary site visits, and the provision of water level alarms will facilitate the instigation of timely mitigation measures.”

Optical sensors enhanced.

Detection of black, mirrored and transparent surfaces is further improved.

Omron Electronic Components Europe has announced a new series of optical sensors, featuring a longer detection distance. Omron B5W sensors are particularly effective at identifying black, transparent, reflective and other hard to detect services, and the new range also features enhanced performance in this area.

Omron B5W Light Convergent Reflective (LCR) Sensors detect target objects much more reliably than general reflection photo sensors, even those that are often a challenge such as reflective, transparent, diffuse or black surfaces. The sensor’s convergent light beam can be accurately set to trigger on the presence of an object within a tightly specified target area, and ignore any objects in the background or foreground.

The new Omron B5W-LB LCR sensors offer enhanced performance compared to the existing B5W-LA devices, and are offered in super miniature and miniature form. The miniature B5W-LB2101 and LB2112 are available with analogue or digital outputs with a sensing range of 10-55mm for white paper, falling to 10-40mm for black. The device is sized at 40 x 8.4 x 15.9 mm. For applications requiring an even more compact solution, the super-miniature B5W-LB1112 is just 26 x 8.4 x 13mm. It offers a sensing distance of 2-10mm for white paper and 3-8mm for black. All digital devices are offered in light-on and light-off form and are sealed to IP50.

Omron B5W-LB Light Convergent Reflective (LCR) sensors are distinguished by the reliability and repeatability of their detection performance, even when presented with target items of different colours and types of surface including reflective surfaces. Applications include detecting transparent cups and glasses in vending machines, diffuse surfaces that scatter incident light like carpets, black surfaces that absorb light and mirrored surfaces and other objects that are often a challenge for traditional sensors. The devices are for general use to detect target items of various different colours. For example, the B5W is used in a robot cleaner to detect a step. The B5W can reliably distinguish wood, glass, carpet and other floor surfaces from a downward step, to avoid risk of the robot falling. Other functions that can be reliably fulfilled by the B5W-LB include detection of coffee bean levels in drinks machines (low reflectivity) and the detection of paper of all colours including transparent sheets in printers.

Easy-to-deploy monitoring accelerates asset digitalisation.

The AMS Asset Monitor edge analytics device just introduced by Emerson, digitalises essential asset data and analytics for better operations performance and improved decision-making. AMS Asset Monitor provides actionable insights into essential assets that were previously monitored only with infrequent assessments. The new edge analytics device will connect with Emerson’s Plantweb™ Optics asset performance platform to provide key operations personnel with instant asset health details for operations and maintenance decision-making.

Small form aids ease adding to existing assets
delivers continuous asset data & analytics
.
“Plants are always looking for more ways to improve profitability by increasing productivity. Just a percentage point or two in availability can equal millions of dollars per year or more,” said John Turner, product manager for online prediction, Emerson. “The AMS Asset Monitor enables personnel across the plant to see the current health of essential assets along with suggested actions to improve asset health. This allows them to make informed decisions to maintain reliability, increase uptime and maximise productivity.”

Plants typically monitor the condition of essential assets such as pumps, fans, and heat exchangers only every 30 to 60 days. The longer the gap, the more likely that a defect goes undetected and results in an unexpected failure with significant impact on production, product quality, and plant efficiency. The new AMS Asset Monitor combines easy deployment, embedded logic-based analytics, and intuitive health scoring to make it easier for organisations to monitor and maintain essential assets. For instance, AMS Asset Monitor’s analytics and visualisation can help plant personnel effectively plan maintenance during scheduled shutdowns and turnarounds, and reduce or eliminate unplanned downtime.

Unlike typical analytics devices that send data to a historian or the cloud to be processed later, AMS Asset Monitor provides analytics at the edge, performing calculations at the device. This device-centred analytics capability reduces the time, complication, and expense of adding analytics to a plant’s assets. Each device collects data continuously and uses embedded logic to identify and diagnose common reliability issues. Individual issues such as imbalance, misalignment, bearing faults, lubrication issues, or fouling are consolidated into an overall asset health score. AMS Asset Monitor then communicates these health scores via a web browser or – when integrated with Plantweb Optics – through real-time persona-based alerts on mobile devices. Plantweb Optics also enables enterprise-wide visibility and expands edge analytics and digital intelligence throughout the organisation, keeping personnel aware of essential asset health.

The AMS Asset Monitor’s small footprint, along with wired or wireless Ethernet connectivity, makes it simple to install. The edge device can support new applications by simply adding new logic-based analytics.

AMS Asset Monitor provides flexible, scalable reliability monitoring with edge analytics, enabling plants to more easily adopt predictive maintenance to avoid operations disruption and maximise production time.
