It also includes a security diagnostics utility that allows customers to confirm that the UC-8200 Series computer remains compliant with IEC 62443-4-2 during the integration stage. Powered by an Armv7 Cortex-A7 dual-core 1 GHz processor, it also has Dual SIM slots and a microSD socket, two auto-sensing 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports, one CAN port, and a DIN-rail mountable IP30 metal housing with a wide temperature range of -40° to 85° C.

Additional security features include:
• Hardware Root of Trust.
The UC-8200 Series computer incorporates a one-time programmable (OTP) fuse and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 technology to establish a hardware-based chain of trust that safeguards the Secure Boot process and software updates. This blocks hackers from taking control of the device during boot time and prevents malicious updates from being used for malware exploitation.

• Reliable and Fast Recovery.
Device availability is critical in industrial automation and control systems (IACS). That is why Moxa Industrial Linux 3 (MIL3) comes equipped with quick backup and restore utilities, as well as automated system recovery features based on an overlay file system architecture. This helps to reduce downtime in the event of a security breach, process failure, or file corruption, such as a power outage during a critical update.

• Robust Connectivity and Network Management.
MCM (Moxa Connect Manager) easily optimizes LAN and WAN network availability by automatically switching between Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and LTE connections, which can minimize downtime caused by network unavailability or DOS attacks.

• Superior Long-term Support.
Moxa provides long-term after-sales support and Debian-based distributions with 10-year life cycles to support UC-8200-equipped systems, including security patches, bug fixes, and access to the Moxa Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) that takes a proactive approach to protect Moxa products from cybersecurity vulnerabilities and effectively mitigate and manage security risks.

Pascal LeRay, Head of Cybersecurity at Bureau Veritas (BV), the global certification body that issued the ISASecure CSA Security Level 2 certification for the UC-8200 Series industrial computers, commented: “It is a great honor to assist Moxa in successfully obtaining IEC 62443-4-2 certification and to empower the company in better grasping the overall security issues and quality of product development through IEC 62443 to enhance its competitiveness. IEC 62443 universal standards for industrial control and information security have become mandatory technical requirements in many countries. Furthermore, as demand for product security increases, the importance of IEC 62443-4-2 has increased significantly, resulting in a growing number of customers requiring proof of security level from manufacturers for their Industrial IoT equipment."

Real-time qualified industrial PCs.

Today, more and more industrial customers are using PC (Personal Computer) technology for high end sophisticated real-time control applications. These computers have high CPU processing capabilities in relation to their costs when compared to software and hardware development for dedicated platforms.

Typical applications where such PCs are used are:
  • CNC and Motion Control
  • Robotics and PLC applications
  • Medical applications like surgical robots or computer tomographs
  • Real-time data acquisition

Regular PCs are designed for standard office use while such industrial applications need hardware which is more suitable to their respective environment: Industrial PCs (IPCs)!

These Industrial PCs fulfill various requirements like mechanical robustness, power consumption, connectivity, storage.

However, some control systems require hard real-time latency predictability while the processors of the x86 architecture today have sophisticated power saving mechanisms which may have serious impact on the requested determinism. These CPUs also have a special protection and correction mode known as system management mode (SMM). This mode is not traceable by the operating system and is a source of unpredictability in the system. Also other features that may be controlled in the BIOS may have an influence on the IPC's real-time behavior like Hyper Threading or GPU settings.

Thus, one of the IPC selection criteria will be the real-time capabilities of the respective solution. Especially in the case applications have the need to run the Microsoft Windows operating system in conjunction with a real-time extension or real-time hypervisor software solution, this becomes an important and sometimes challenging selection criteria.

For that purpose, acontis has developed a standard scheme to determine and compare the real-time capabilities of Industrial PCs.

An excerpt of different IPCs from various vendors have been pre-validated for real-time use.

Appropriate BIOS settings as well as real-time results are published here on their website.

The latest addition to Advantech’s UNO-1 series of IoT gateway devices, UNO-148, bring Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake Core power to Impulse Embedded's range of compact DIN-rail mountable industrial computers.

Built to run Windows 10 IoT or Ubuntu 20.4 Linux, with industrial features like isolated serial and digital I/O, plus wide input voltage and operating temperature ranges, the UNO-148 is suitable for a host of true industrial applications including factory automation, traffic management, and robotic control.

The UNO-148 comes with a choice of the 11th Gen Core i7, i5, or i3 processors and features two SO-DIMM memory slots which come populated with 8GB of DDR4 3200MHz, but can be upgraded up to 64GB. In keeping with the fast memory and high-performance processing capabilities, the UNO-148 also features an M.2 2280 M-key slot for NVMe SSDs and an independent 2.5Gigabit Ethernet controller, capable of real-time communication for low latency applications like robotics and PLC control. Furthermore, the UNO-148 features two Gigabit Ethernet ports, an M.2 2230 E-key slot for the latest WiFi 6 wireless expansion cards, and an M.2 3042/3052 B-key slot that can be used to install high speed, low latency 5G cellular modules.

Like other UNO-1 series embedded computers, the UNO-148 is DIN-rail mountable, fanless, and compact in size. When combined with its flexible communication options and wide power input range (9V to 36V DC), the UNO-148 can be installed easily into control cabinets anywhere on site. With wide -20°C to +60°C operating temperature support as standard, the UNO-148 further shows its suitability for harsh industrial environments. Packed with I/O, the UNO-148 has four RS-232/422/485 serial ports, all with 2.5kV isolation, 16-channel DIO (8-in/8-out) again with 2.5kV isolation as standard, three 10Gbps USB3.2 Gen2 ports and two DisplayPort interfaces.

To further tailor the UNO-148 to the specific needs and requirements of any application, Advantech have provided a modular design function via a choice of two expansion plug-in modules:

The UNO-148-IS2EA features a 2.5" SSD storage bay and an iDoor expansion port. Advantech's iDoor Technology utilises a standard miniPCIe port to allow customers the flexibility of I/O expansion with a wide series of modules supporting a range of Fieldbus and other comms functions like serial and Ethernet.

The UNO-148-P11EA also provides PCIe x4 expansion slots for adding a PCI Express card for additional DAQ, comms and I/O capability.

Both of these modules allow customers to fully customise the base unit with the specific I/O for their application demands. This flexibility is key in making the UNO-148 a multi-use control PC for a wide range of industrial computing applications.
