High-performance edge computing multiscreened platform with Ai performance.

Displays maps, video streams and operational data across three 14-inch screens while bringing powerful Ai processing directly into the field.

Bressner Technology is expanding its range of rugged mobile computing systems with the Durabook Z14I-DX3, an exceptional mobile workstation that combines three Full HD touchscreens with the latest Intel® Core™ Ultra technology and optional NVIDIA® graphics acceleration. It has been developed for applications in which large volumes of information need to be assessed simultaneously and a conventional laptop would quickly reach its limits.

The Z14I-DX3 is available from Bressner with immediate effect. The company sees potential applications particularly in government agencies and emergency services, energy and utilities, field engineering, maritime environments and industrial operations.

Three displays, one integrated workspace.
In addition to its central 14-inch display, the Z14I-DX3 features two fold-out side screens. Within moments, the system can be transformed into a mobile workstation with three full-size displays. For transport, the additional screens fold inwards and remain securely attached to the device. No separate monitors, cables or mounting hardware are required.

The additional screen space is particularly useful when several sources of information need to remain visible at the same time. An operational map can be shown on the main screen, for example, while a live video stream runs on the second display and telemetry or sensor data is presented on the third. This arrangement also simplifies the control of unmanned systems, technical diagnostics and the monitoring of geographically distributed equipment.

All three touchscreens provide Full HD resolution, a brightness of 1,200 nits and DynaVue® technology for improved readability in direct sunlight. They can be operated using a finger, gloves or a stylus and continue to support reliable input in wet conditions. Display brightness can be adjusted simultaneously across all three screens or individually for each display.

Processing power for demanding edge applications.
The Z14I-DX3 is powered by Intel® Core™ Ultra processors with an integrated Intel® AI Boost NPU. This enables AI-assisted workloads to be processed directly on the device, reducing dependence on a reliable connection to data centers or cloud services. This is a significant advantage in remote locations and time-critical operations.

For more demanding applications, Durabook offers a choice of dedicated NVIDIA® GPUs. Available options include the RTX™ A500 AI accelerator, RTX™ 3500 Ada and RTX™ 5000 Ada. The most powerful configuration delivers up to 682 TOPS and is suitable for tasks such as real-time image recognition, sensor fusion and local video analysis. Combined with the platform’s CPU and NPU, the system’s total Ai performance exceeds this figure.

“The Z14I-DX3 rugged mobile laptop with its triple-screen design is a prime example of how Durabook is moving beyond the expected evolution of rugged computing,” said Fred Kao, CEO of Twinhead. “The Z14I-DX3 combines the capabilities customers expect from a rugged Durabook computer with an expansive multi-screen workspace and Ai performance in a powerful edge computing platform.”

Modern and legacy connectivity.
Mobile operations often require both new and existing equipment to be connected. The Z14I-DX3 therefore offers a broad selection of interfaces, including Thunderbolt™ 4, two RJ-45 Ethernet ports, two serial RS-232 ports, ExpressCard 54 and USB ports spanning several generations.

Wireless connectivity is provided through Intel® Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth® 5.4. Depending on the selected configuration, the workstation can also be equipped with dedicated GPS as well as 4G LTE or 5G mobile connectivity. Nano-SIM and eSIM are supported.

Two removable NVMe PCIe SSDs can be exchanged without tools in a matter of seconds. This makes it easier to switch between different operational profiles and supports the secure handling of sensitive data. Security options include a smart card reader, a Windows Hello-compatible webcam, an RFID/NFC reader and a fingerprint sensor.

Designed for use beyond protected office environments.
The Z14I-DX3 is certified to MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-461G. Its design therefore addresses both mechanical stresses and operation in electromagnetically demanding environments. The rugged construction makes the workstation a mobile alternative for tasks that have traditionally required a fixed command station or several separate devices.

Bressner supports users in selecting the appropriate processor, graphics solution, storage capacity and communication options. The company can also assist with integrating the workstation into existing IT and operational environments.

Ultra-rugged connectivity for IIoT.

Ultra-robust Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) and USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity solutions have been released by Fischer Connectors. They are designed to meet the specific requirements of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications in rugged environments.

With the increase in sensor density, actuators and controllers in Industry 4.0 and IIoT operational settings, high power levels and massive amounts of data must be securely and efficiently managed through ultra-fast transmission lines with cables running over long distances. Miniature connectors and cables are needed to interconnect smaller and smaller devices and sensors in areas that are sometimes confined and hard to access. And connectivity must be ruggedized to resist shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, water and corrosion when exposed to demanding environmental and chemical conditions, both indoors and outdoors.

To address these challenges, Fischer Connectors has developed new high-speed data and power connectivity solutions combining Single Pair Ethernet and USB 3.2 Gen 2 high-speed protocols with the rugged, high-density and miniature features of its flagship product lines. They enable space-saving and cost-efficient integration in industrial automation and robotics, chemical plants, food processing, automotive production lines, outdoor sensing and unmanned systems.

The Single Pair Ethernet solutions from the Fischer Core and Fischer UltiMate™ Series allow for 1 Gbit/s data transfer per IEEE 802.3bp - 1000Base-T1. Exceptionally rugged by any market standards, they outperform other suppliers’ SPE solutions in terms of security, durability, as well as environmental and mechanical performance. Fischer SPE is compliant with MIL-STD norms (through Fischer UltiMate™) and offers 10,000 mating cycles, three locking mechanisms (push-pull, screw, quick-release), and hermetic sealing in addition to IP68/ IP69 ratings. SPE is also featured in the ultra-miniature Fischer MiniMax™ connector in ‘size 06’ (Ø 10 mm receptacle).

The demand for USB 3.0+ protocol is high in Industry 4.0 operations, as it offers high data transfer rates with low latency for IIoT control applications, nearly twice the power output than USB 2.0 (900 mA vs. 500 mA), better power efficiency due to lower consumption in idle state, and larger bandwidth. Fischer MiniMax™ connectors with USB 3.2 Gen 2 allow for 10 Gbit/s data transfer, offer additional power contacts up to 8 A, and are half the size of some competitor connectors with similar speed but no power.

To accompany its product release, Fischer Connectors has published a trend paper entitled “The Connectivity Challenge – Connecting Industry 4.0”. It describes three challenges facing OEM engineers designing IIoT applications, as well as three innovation practices addressing cybersecurity, global logistics and Edge/Cloud infrastructure.

The innovation-driven IIoT market is growing exponentially. With billions of smart sensors, computers and machines connected and operating across the Internet, experts expect an annual increase of over 20%, reaching CHF 1.5 trillion by 2030.

Ensuring firm PCB installation.

Foremost Electronics now supply the nVent/Schroff Card-Lok range of innovative high thermal performance and high clamp force PCB retainers for use in rugged environments. The new Card-Lok retainers have been designed to be drop-in replacements for most applications currently using standard Card-Loks and provide on average more than 3X the amount of clamp force compared to similarly sized Card-Loks.

Emma Kempster, Key Account Manager, of Foremost Electronics, comments; "Reliability of critical systems is of paramount importance to designers and systems integrators. nVent/Schroff Card-Lok high clamp force PCB Retainers installed in appropriate enclosures protect sensitive systems from the effects of shock and vibration ensuring maximum reliability."

Standard COTS and modified Card-Loks are available to meet a wide arrange of requirements and include designs for second level maintenance including torque limiting and tool-less card locks. With their small and lightweight designs typical applications include industrial systems, defence, space flight, communications, computers and intelligence surveillance.

As more systems are being exposed to increased shock and vibration sufficient printed circuit board retention is critical as are the requirements of SWaP (reducing size and weight while effectively handling increasing power). SWaP is a continuing challenge for defence and aerospace designers and manufacturers and is especially important in airborne applications where weight equates to cost, or for unmanned vehicles where space is a premium. The need to miniaturize the size of electronics has also been driven by the growing need for devices that can easily be carried over long distances by operators. Historically greater clamp force has only been available with larger profile card locks which require more space in the enclosure, are heavier and consume valuable board space.

The innovative new nVent/Schroff high clamp force design features 30⁰ wedge angles versus the 45⁰ wedge angles on conventional card lock designs. The shallower angle provides greater normal force between the wedges resulting in enhanced clamp performance. The high clamp force provides on average more than 3X the amount of clamp force compared to similarly sized card locks. The new high clamp force retainers have been designed to be drop-in replacements for most applications currently using standard clamp locks. Schroff 260HC, 263HC, 265HC, 267HC high clamp force Card-Loks have the same mounting locations and optional features such as a visual indicator and lock patch as standard models.

Rugged position switches.

With the Ex 99, the steute business unit "Extreme" presents a new series of position switches developed especially for "Extreme" applications and conforming to DIN EN 50041 dimensions.

"Extreme" conditions include use in explosive environments. These new switching devices have therefore been tested and approved in accordance with ATEX and IECEx for use in gas Ex zones 1 and 2, as well as dust Ex zones 21 and 22.

A further "Extreme" criterion is suitability for low temperatures. The Ex 99 series can be used in temperatures down to -60°C, making high demands on design, especially housing construction and sealings.

The housings in the new position switches are therefore made out of high-quality fibreglass-reinforced plastic. This material guarantees that even after an impact test at -60oC the high protection class of the switchgear (IP 66) is maintained.

A further aspect to which the designers have dedicated a great deal of attention is the sealing. The sealing of the housing cover is completely vulcanised, while the sealing of the plunger features a redundant sealing system, comprising an external sealing cuff able to withstand low temperatures and an internal Teflon sealing ring.

As is usual with steute position switches, a wide range of actuators is available – for example plungers, roller plungers, roller levers, parallel levers, turning levers, adjustable turning levers and push buttons. Regarding switching inserts, users can choose between different variants with slow-action or snap-action. A function for safety-related applications is a further option.

The extended (low) temperature range of this new series of Ex norm switches also increases its field of application, e.g. into the oil & gas industry (onshore and offshore) or shipping technology (ships travelling the Arctic). The standard dimensions of the new "Extreme" switchgear series facilitate integration in a surrounding construction.

Make scratches and scuffs or even breakage a thing of the past!

JLT Mobile Computers has a new logistics computer which features revolutionary Rugged Projective Capacitive Touch (PCT) display technology and additional computing power compared to previous product generations.
Reduces total cost of ownership and improves users' productivity by addressing one of the most common reasons for computer failures
The JLT1214P computer's bright 12-inch XGA display with the new JLT Rugged PCT technology provides a familiar, user-friendly experience comparable to modern consumer devices, both with a gloved or ungloved hand, while ensuring ruggedness, reliability and longevity in even the most demanding environments. This computer also offers enhanced computing performance thanks to a 64-bit Intel quad-core processor, improving responsiveness. In combination with the new user-friendly touch screen, the higher performance speeds up tasks and increases users' productivity. This powerful combination of features provides the best possible total cost of ownership for logistics applications ranging from warehousing and food distribution to freezer storage and cross-docking.

It is based on the company's JLT1214 platform which is already well known in the market for its outstanding quality and reliability, having been proved in thousands of installations by customers around the world.

Previous generations of rugged computers most commonly used resistive touch screen technology that is chosen because of its usability with different types of gloves and in wet conditions. In some demanding environments, however, the resistive touch screen is susceptible to scratches and scuffs or even breakage of its plastic screen, often making the screen the point of failure for the computer. Resistive touch screens also do not offer the user experience that operators have come to expect from the capacitive touch screens in their own personal electronic devices. With the introduction of the JLT Rugged PCT technology, the projective capacitive touch with superior resilience to wear and tear can be used in the same demanding use-cases as a resistive touch, for example with different types of gloves and wet conditions.

The addition of the JLT Rugged PCT technology to the proven JLT1214 platform provides the JLT1214P's touch screen with a lifetime as long as the computer itself, minimizing disruptive down time, resulting in a higher service level and greater customer satisfaction. A 1.8mm thick, practically unbreakable hardened glass cover protects the touch sensor, offering unparalleled durability and scratch resistance. In tests, it withstands a 500g steel ball dropped from a height of 1.2m with no damage to the screen. Additionally, the JLT1214P computer can operate in temperatures between -35 to +55 degrees Celsius, is dust and water resistant to IP65 and its design eliminates the cavity between the glass screen and the case, preventing dirt build up when in use and allowing it to be easily sanitized for use in the food industry.

In today's logistics market, where productivity is more important than ever, the JLT1214P computer's enhanced computing performance helps provide information quickly and reliably, which combined with the improved touch screen usability increases productivity in even the most advanced logistics applications. The JLT1214P is faster than ever before, due to its new Intel E3845 quad-core processor (code named Bay Trail), which can run full 64-bit systems, bringing world class speed to fork lift computers and making it a future-proof platform securing customer investments long-term. The JLT1214P computer comes with either Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 or Windows Embedded versions. In the event of a computer problem, JLT provides a "No Questions Asked" JLT:Care service agreement which guarantees a high level of support and short repair times to minimize down time at predictable cost.

Rugged vehicle computers!

JLT Mobile Computers has launched the VERSO+ 10 computer with QuickLock, a new class of rugged vehicle terminals. Equipped with an Intel® Core(tm) i5 processor, the VERSO+ 10 computer provides leading performance in the industry's smallest rugged form factor, making it a perfect choice for installations in tight cabins or other small areas.

With a quick-mount feature, QuickLock, the computer can easily be attached and detached in a vehicle to simplify service, being moved between vehicles or prevent theft by removing it at the end of the working day. With a 10 inch sunlight readable XGA display and scratch resistant multi-point touch, the VERSO+ 10 computer becomes an extension of the heavy-duty JLT VERSO series that also includes 12 inch and 15 inch computers. It provides the same high reliability as the rest of the VERSO series when used within very tough environments such as mining, ports, yard-logistics, freezer storage, forestry, and agriculture.

The VERSO series launched in the first quarter of 2013 and has since ramped quickly and been adopted by customers around the world with high demand for performance, ruggedness and reliability. With the new VERSO+ 10 computer, with QuickLock feature and a smaller form factor, customers now have a more flexible and compact alternative, but with the same outstanding performance and ruggedness.

As with all JLT computers, the VERSO+ 10 computer is built from the ground up to deliver maximum reliability and function in very demanding environments. It comes with an Intel Core processor or an Intel dual-core Atom D2550 processor. Built-in features include a 9-36 VDC power supply, a backup battery to ensure uninterrupted operation during power drops, WLAN communication with built-in highly sensitive PIFA antennas, custom-made for reliable Wi-Fi connectivity in environments with poor coverage. New with the VERSO+ 10 computer are Bluetooth PIFA antennas with a resulting reliable communication with low-power hand carried peripherals, and the option of external antennas for both WLAN and Bluetooth for very demanding environments such as ports and other wide areas. The VERSO+ 10 can also be equipped with 3G WWAN communication. The VERSO+ 10 computer can be ordered with Windows 7 Pro or Windows Embedded Standard 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Embedded 8 Standard operating systems.

"With the new VERSO+ 10 computer, we build on the success of the VERSO series of heavy-duty vehicle computers that, since its launch in January last year, is being selected by customers within mining, sawing mills, off-shore, ports and other demanding applications," said Per Holmberg, CEO at JLT. "With the VERSO+ 10 computer, we reinforce our leading position within the high-end of the market by providing the smallest form factor and greater flexibility with the same high performance."

More and more customers also go for the JLT:Care Service Level Agreement. With this "No-Questions-Asked" service added, customers are guaranteed a high support level and short repair times to maximize the up-time of the computer at predictable cost.

The VERSO+ 10 computer is available now with a dual-core Intel Atom processor D2550 and can be ordered from JLT Sales Partners. The Core processor option will start shipping in the second half of 2014.
