Real-time qualified industrial PCs.

Today, more and more industrial customers are using PC (Personal Computer) technology for high end sophisticated real-time control applications. These computers have high CPU processing capabilities in relation to their costs when compared to software and hardware development for dedicated platforms.

Typical applications where such PCs are used are:
  • CNC and Motion Control
  • Robotics and PLC applications
  • Medical applications like surgical robots or computer tomographs
  • Real-time data acquisition

Regular PCs are designed for standard office use while such industrial applications need hardware which is more suitable to their respective environment: Industrial PCs (IPCs)!

These Industrial PCs fulfill various requirements like mechanical robustness, power consumption, connectivity, storage.

However, some control systems require hard real-time latency predictability while the processors of the x86 architecture today have sophisticated power saving mechanisms which may have serious impact on the requested determinism. These CPUs also have a special protection and correction mode known as system management mode (SMM). This mode is not traceable by the operating system and is a source of unpredictability in the system. Also other features that may be controlled in the BIOS may have an influence on the IPC's real-time behavior like Hyper Threading or GPU settings.

Thus, one of the IPC selection criteria will be the real-time capabilities of the respective solution. Especially in the case applications have the need to run the Microsoft Windows operating system in conjunction with a real-time extension or real-time hypervisor software solution, this becomes an important and sometimes challenging selection criteria.

For that purpose, acontis has developed a standard scheme to determine and compare the real-time capabilities of Industrial PCs.

An excerpt of different IPCs from various vendors have been pre-validated for real-time use.

Appropriate BIOS settings as well as real-time results are published here on their website.

MQTT upgrade fir CPUs.

IDEC Corporation has released a free firmware upgrade enabling new and existing MicroSmart FC6A Plus PLC CPUs to support the industry-standard MQTT* protocol. The upgrade can be downloaded to the FC6A CPU, so it is easy for users to connect all types of field data to on-site and cloud-based brokers, and make the information readily available for users and analytical applications. Users can also send commands to the FC6A using MQTT.

Users everywhere know that industrial internet of things (IIoT) data acquired from their manufacturing sites—whether from machine automation, building utilities, smart devices, or any other source—is essential for supporting many other activities. Live and historized data drives visualization, alarming/notifications, control commands, predictive maintenance, deep analytics, and more so sites can operate at maximum efficiency.

Traditional industrial poll/response communications protocols used with PLCs and HMIs are robust and useful, but they can be demanding for users to configure and maintain, they may inefficiently use limited bandwidth, and they often do not provide sufficient cybersecurity.

MQTT has emerged as the preferred IIoT communications protocol because it uses a lightweight and efficient publish/subscribe methodology for secure messaging between devices and centralized brokers, making information easily available for all authorized applications. A large number of clients can publish data to the broker, subscribe to any broker data, or bi-directionally do both. The MQTT brokers can be located on-site and/or in the cloud.

The FC6A with MQTT capability is ideal for new automation system designs, or for adding IIoT connectivity to existing systems. MQTT is supported on Ethernet port 1, so the FC6A can use existing wired, Wi-Fi, or mobile data wireless networking to connect with on-site or cloud-based brokers. A typical application would publish machine data from many machines to the cloud, where it would be historized and could be transmitted to subscribing mobile applications.

No additional hardware is needed. Users can take advantage of the traditional PLC control logic and I/O functionality, or they can use the FC6A as an IIoT data concentrator for many other PLCs and intelligent devices. The FC6A with MQTT supports Amazon Web Services AWS IoT Core today, with future support planned for Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

Performance boost for CNC hardware in the high-end segment!

In introducing version 4.7 of the Sinumerik Operate software, Siemens is presenting new, more powerful CPUs, and 15 and 19 inch "Blackline" panels in widescreen format for the Sinumerik 840D sl CNC. The new 7x0.3B PN processors are Profinet-compatible NCUs (Numerical Control Units). The new processor technology, for example the NCU 730.3B PN, is up to 15 percent more powerful than the previously used components. The result is shorter program runtimes, faster simulation, and fast operation in all situations. The new technology, exemplified by the 720.3B PN and 730.3B PN NCUs, also consumes up to 50 percent less power which, in turn, causes the processors to generate less heat.

Background
The new NCUs and panels expand the Siemens range of CNC systems and products. By using the new hardware components, companies can increase both the performance and the ease of operation of their machines.
The basic configurations of the 7x0.3B PN-CPUs for the Sinumerik 840D sl already have 10 MB of buffered user memory as standard for part programs, and a 2 GB working memory (DRAM). The part program memory can be expanded up to 22 MB, depending on the particular processor model. In most cases, automatic adaptation of the drivers enables the new NCUs to be integrated into existing machines and applications without modifying the software. The new, long-term availability of the new NCU processor technology offers a secure future for newly developed machines – both for their subsequent further development and on account of the long-term availability of spare part components.

The new 15 and 19 inch "Blackline" panels are widescreen format touch screens. They are mainly characterized by good legibility, simple operation and a long service life. The technical basis of the display is a capacitive sensor system that supports touch operation even when gloves are worn. The panels are designed for degree of protection IP66 and are especially rugged. For example, the 15 inch panel is approved for vibration accelerations up to 2 g. Both the new devices have an integrated thin client unit (TCU) and are connected to the Sinumerik via Ethernet.
