Industrial communications' Cyber resilience.

The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) will require all manufacturers of products with digital elements to implement comprehensive security measures starting in December 2027. After thoroughly reviewing its technologies, PI has come to the following conclusion: PROFINET already provides the basis for CRA compliance today. Manufacturers can use existing installations and expand them step by step depending on their risk assessment. The PROFINET specification provides additional building blocks for extended security requirements.

“The CRA requirements pose major challenges for companies,” says PI Chairman Xaver Schmidt. “Our analysis shows that manufacturers who rely on PROFINET already have a solid basis for CRA compliance today. If higher security requirements are needed, manufacturers can gradually expand their products with PROFINET security features in the future – from authenticated secure communication to complete encryption.”

It requires manufacturers to assess the cybersecurity risks of their products. In doing so, they analyze possible attack scenarios and evaluate the necessary protection for industrial communication. Depending on the risk assessment, manufacturers can implement individual or multiple building blocks from the PROFINET security architecture to meet the CRA requirements for secure communication:

Secure Cell:
Network segmentation and access control (cell protection concept) can already be implemented with today’s PROFINET installations. Additional hardening measures are available with the PROFINET specification V2.5.

Secure Access:
Direct, secure access to devices from higher-level networks for applications ranging from asset management to artificial intelligence.

Secure Realtime:
Integrity, authentication and, if required, confidentiality through cryptographic protection of acyclic and cyclic real-time communication for critical infrastructures.

The Secure Access and Secure Realtime building blocks are described in the PROFINET specification V2.5, which will be published in mid-2026.

“Cybersecurity is not a one-size-fits-all approach but must be scalable – from small standalone machines to installations spread over kilometers,” says Schmidt. “The PROFINET architecture covers the entire spectrum: from network segmentation to cryptographically secured real-time communication – all while maintaining consistent performance. The key point is that many manufacturers can use their existing PROFINET installations as a basis and expand them as needed. This enables the CRA to be implemented in line with requirements without compromising data access.”

PI is developing the PROFINET specification in close cooperation with TÜV SÜD, based on the IEC 62443 industry standard.

Ethernet-APL is ready to use.

Endress+Hauser is soon launching a full portfolio of Ethernet-APL* measuring devices that transmit data via the PROFINET protocol.

Expectations in the process industry for the new physical layer are enormous. Now, Ethernet-APL has shown that it can meet these expectations. Endress+Hauser successfully conducted two load tests of a realistic Ethernet-APL setup with components from various manufacturers. The results confirm the new technology’s reputation as a game-changer in industrial communication.

Easy data access thanks to Ethernet-APL

The load tests were designed according to customer specifications to prove that components from different manufacturers can be combined to create a reliable and robust system based on Ethernet-APL. The global chemical company BASF defined the requirements from the customers’ point of view. On the hardware suppliers’ side, Endress+Hauser stood next to Pepperl+Fuchs, Honeywell and ABB. Their components were confirmed to work together in harmony.

Successful load tests prove market readiness of Ethernet-APL.
The first test was set up with nearly 240 Endress+Hauser measuring devices, including flow, pressure, temperature and level sensors. They were integrated into a system with Pepperl+Fuchs’ field switches and a Honeywell control system, all using Ethernet-APL and PROFINET. For the second test ABB provided the control system and was tested along with the previous field switches and measuring devices.

The test results were conclusive: Ethernet-APL can be used under realistic circumstances. The test cases were carried out with maximum network layout, and the scalability and fault tolerance were successfully verified. All relevant requirements like total netload or redundancy switch-over times were met or exceeded.

Open Integration partner program enabled and supported tests.
The Endress+Hauser Open Integration partner program unites more than a dozen manufacturers that want to ensure the streamlined interaction of their complementary products. The partners test and document the integration of their offerings and how digitalization may be fully utilized within typical process automation applications.

According to Jörg Reinkensmeier, head of the Open Integration partner program at Endress+Hauser, “The load tests proved that Ethernet-APL can be used for real. The components from various manufacturers work together smoothly, and the systems run reliably. We are proud that the close cooperation with our Open Integration partners made it possible to validate this technology. We have reached a milestone of bringing Ethernet to the field level of process automation.”

Ethernet-APL opens new possibilites for data use.
Ethernet-APL enables the use of Ethernet at the field level of process plants. The 2-wire technology with power and communication over the same wire pair meets the requirements of even harsh process environments. Fast and digital data transmission with high bandwidth is now possible over long distances and in explosive atmospheres. Easy access to data from field instruments can lift process automation to a new level of efficiency and professionalism.

With the success of the load test, BASF, Endress+Hauser, Pepperl+Fuchs, Honeywell and ABB have taken a significant step towards a technological infrastructure that is open, future-proof and ready for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This will enable customers to create more flexible, efficient and cost-effective industrial systems and more benefits for the industry.

* Ethernet-APL is the ruggedized, two-wire, loop-powered Ethernet physical layer that uses 10BASE-T1L plus extensions for installation within the demanding operating conditions and hazardous areas of process plants.

Only a joystick required!

Lifting a steel beam, moving a container or controlling a crane does not require much raw strength nowadays. On the contrary, what is required is dexterity and a joystick. Kristianstads Lyftdon AB in Sweden has long experience of producing ergonomic solutions for the operator cabins from which you control cranes and industrial operations. With the help of HMS Anybus technology, their new joystick can be used in industrial applications using PROFINET.

Kristianstads Lyftdon AB, or KLAB, are experts in ergonomic lifting and driver’s chairs for industrial use. They develop and build operator cabins for larger cranes used in the steel industry, heating plants, waste-handling stations, etc. With a focus on ergonomics, they produce everything needed inside an operator’s cabin — the most important operational part being the steering device itself, the joystick, which the operator uses to control the machine.

“We have been making joysticks since the start in 1978 and have a good idea of what the industry needs,” says Sven Holmer, owner and chairman of KLAB. And continues “When we designed our latest joystick, we wanted to provide it with bus communication. Previously, these solutions have often been hard-wired. As the industry is increasingly moving towards Ethernet communication and several of our major customers are in central Europe, PROFINET was the network we mainly wanted the joystick to communicate on. ”

Any network
KLAB’s technology partner recommended them to use Anybus CompactCom from HMS to enable the joystick to communicate on PROFINET. Just as the name suggests, Anybus allows the joystick to communicate on any network — fieldbus or industrial Ethernet. You can easily switch to another Anybus CompactCom and thus communicate on other networks such as EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus-TCP or CC-Link IE Field. This opens up opportunities to sell the joystick in new markets, in other parts of the world.

“We start with PROFINET,” says Sven Holmer at KLAB, “but of course we also see new opportunities now that the joysitick can communicate on other industrial networks in other markets.“

Any form factor
Anybus CompactCom is also flexible in terms of form factor. Users can choose to integrate a chip that contains all the necessary software, or a so-called Brick including hardware and software for PCB mounting. A third alternative is a complete CompactCom Module which is simply plugged into the end product.

KLAB chose the Brick solution — Anybus CompactCom B40 — which suited the joystick well in terms of size, functionality and price.

Embedded web server makes data available
Another major advantage of the Anybus solution is that it has a built-in web server that allows KLAB to store data from the joystick — both for control and analysis. This means that KLAB and their customers can gain important insight into how the joystick is used by operators. This opens opportunities to refine and improve the product for different applications. The web server also makes it possible to access and configure the solution from anywhere.

Sven Holmer describes the implementation of Anybus technology as relatively easy — From idea to finished and working product in about a year. “We could definitely have done it faster, but we have a lot to do and development projects like this often have to wait a bit,” says Sven Holmer. “However, we have not encountered any major problems and with good support from HMS, the communication solution came into place smoothly.”

Continued growth for industrial networks despite pandemic - Report.

The study concludes that the industrial network market is showing signs of regained stability and HMS expects the total market to grow by 6% in 2021.

Every year, HMS Networks carries out a study* of the industrial network market to analyze the distribution of new connected nodes in factory automation. This year’s study shows that, despite the Corona pandemic, the industrial network market is expected it to grow by 6% in 2021. Industrial Ethernet still shows the highest growth and now has 65% of new installed nodes (64% last year), while fieldbuses are at 28% (30). Wireless networks continue to climb and are now at 7%. PROFINET passes EtherNet/IP at the top of the network rankings with 18% market share compared to 17%.

Market shares 2021 according to HMS Networks – fieldbus, industrial Ethernet and wireless.

The study concludes that the industrial network market is showing signs of regained stability and HMS expects the total market to grow by 6% in 2021.HMS Networks now presents their annual analysis of the industrial network market, focusing on new installed nodes within factory automation globally. As an independent supplier of solutions within Industrial ICT (Information and Communication Technology), HMS has a substantial insight into the industrial network market. The 2021 study includes estimated market shares and growth rates for fieldbuses, industrial Ethernet and Wireless technologies.

The study concludes that the industrial network market is showing signs of regained stability and HMS expects the total market to grow by 6% in 2021.

Industrial Ethernet is growing steadily
Growing by 8%, Industrial Ethernet continues to take market share. Industrial Ethernet now makes up for 65% of the global market of new installed nodes in Factory Automation (compared to 64% last year). EtherNet/IP and PROFINET are fighting for first place, but this year PROFINET passes EtherNet/IP at the top of the network rankings with 18% market share compared to 17%. EtherCAT continues to perform well globally and now matches the leading fieldbus PROFIBUS at 8% market share. Modbus TCP is next at 5% market share and together with fieldbus brother Modbus RTU, these Modbus technologies now account for 10% of the market, confirming their continued importance in factory installations globally.

Fieldbus decline halted
The ongoing fieldbus decline reported by HMS in recent years is almost halted with a fieldbus decrease of only -1% in 2021, as factories tend to stick to existing technologies to a higher degree in uncertain times, such as during the pandemic. Fieldbuses are now at 28% market share of the total amount of new installed nodes (30% last year). PROFIBUS is still the clear fieldbus leader at 8% followed by Modbus-RTU at 5% share and CC-Link at 4%.

Wireless is here to stay
Wireless continues to grow rapidly at a rate of 24%. Wireless now has 7% market share but the market still awaits the full impact of 5G in factories. With ongoing global activities about wireless cellular technologies as enablers for next level smart manufacturing, HMS expects that market demand will increase for wirelessly connected devices and machines to be included in the less cabled and flexible automation architectures of the future.

Regional network variations
EtherNet/IP and PROFINET are leading in Europe and the Middle East with PROFIBUS and EtherCAT as runners up. Other popular networks are Modbus (RTU/TCP) and Ethernet POWERLINK. The U.S. market is dominated by EtherNet/IP with EtherCAT gaining some market share. PROFINET and EtherNet/IP lead a fragmented Asian market, followed by strong contenders CC-Link/CC-Link IE Field, PROFIBUS, EtherCAT and Modbus (RTU/TCP).

* The study includes HMS’ estimation for 2021 based on number of new installed nodes within Factory Automation. A node is defined as a machine or device connected to an industrial field network. The presented figures represent HMS’ consolidated view, considering insights from colleagues in the industry, our own sales statistics and overall perception of the market.

Scanning steel band in tyres.

Riftek* is continuing to develop bespoke measurement solutions for high-throughput manufacturing processes centred around its well proven range of 2D laser triangulation sensors.

The latest custom-engineered project is a fully automated Industrial Ethernet based system that measures internal geometric parameters of the cylindrical steel bands that form an integral part of automotive tyres. The production conveyor-mounted machine combines a two-axis motion system that positions and rotates a specially adapted Riftek RF627 series 2D laser triangulation sensor to create a radial 3D scanning sequence inside the steel belt. With an inner-diameter range between 110 to 410 mm and axial height of 70 to 305 mm, the RF627 in combination with the probe software measures diameter, roundness, chamber width and angle to an average accuracy of +/- 50 microns with the values returned to a PLC via an integrated PROFINET interface.
The mechanical hardware, including the mounting frame and main housing with interfacing connectors for 24V DC power and fieldbus, forms part of the Riftek supplied system. As well as the probe software, an RS422-to-PROFINET IO module interfaces the 2D laser sensor to the PLC. For this set-up, the customer preferred to use a Siemens S7-1200 PLC although other manufacturer’s PLCs of choice could be used. GSD files and a comprehensive installation manual are also part of the supply. The probe software and the IO module combine to provide a data packet allowing the graphical display of the component being measured and a file output for use in further analysis software. The system supplied is fully adaptable for vertical or horizontal orientation to suit the customer’s project demands.

The final system is part of Riftek’s RF096 series custom build range that also includes other versions of the RF627 and other laser sensors that are specifically adapted as sub-systems for multiple measurement of customer’s component parts, typically as part of high-throughput manufacturing processes. Other examples of the RF096 sensor measurement series include fully machine integrated systems for welding lines and automated assembly measuring length, diameter, proximity etc., as well as component profile and thickness measurement, debris monitoring and more. Other systems can include manual operation with footswitches, hand controls or keypad/mouse activation to provide measured results recorded and displayed on a GUI as actual dimensions or as pre-set go or no-go values.

Factory floor talks to building management!

A new Intesis™ protocol translator for communication between PROFINET PLCs on factory floors and Building Management Systems with BACnet IP/MSTP has been announced by HMS Networks. With this, full data integration, monitoring, and control is enabled between factory floors and building facilities.

In factories, it is essential that environmental dimensions such as temperature, humidity, and air quality are controlled and monitored automatically to ensure optimal conditions for manufacturing and working staff. And, by ensuring efficient control of facilities such as HVAC and lighting systems, factory owners can save a lot of energy and manage emergency situations in a safe way.

However, when system integrators plan for factory-to-building integration, they normally face a heterogeneous and challenging communication situation. BACnet is typically the protocol used in the Building Management System (BMS) to control the facilities inside the building, and PROFINET is one of the most used factory networks for controlling production processes.

Focusing on this situation, the new Intesis PROFINET - BACnet IP/MSTP protocol translator from HMS Networks is a cost-effective and easy-to-install gateway solution that offers bi-directional communication between PROFINET PLCs and BACnet controllers. Able to connect up to 1200 data points, the gateway is BACnet IP/MSTP server/slave on one side and PROFINET I/O device on the other, featuring independent Ethernet ports. The gateway has been BTL certified for BACnet and carries the UL mark in order to guarantee the highest communication and quality standards.
Thanks to its strategic placement between the factory and building systems, the gateway becomes an enabler of very interesting applications such as energy metering of devices and machines in the factory from the BACnet-based BMS system, HVAC monitoring, and control from the PROFINET PLC, as well as easy alarm definition and management.

Intesis MAPS, the common configuration tool for all Intesis protocol translators, offers a very intuitive configuration process for system integrators covering both sides of the gateway. MAPS help integrators further in their projects by providing valuable EDE files for the BACnet integration, as well as GSD files and TIA portal TAG files for fast configuration of any connected PROFINET PLC controller.

Extending the comprehensive range of existing Intesis BACnet protocol translators, the new PROFINET - BACnet version is the first product in a new line of Intesis gateways for factory to building integration that will be released step by step by HMS Networks. In these gateways, HMS combines its proven Anybus® and Intesis communication technologies for industrial and building-oriented communication respectively, trusted by customers in millions of installations worldwide.

TSN functionality.

Since the PROFINET specification V2.4 was released with integrated TSN functionality, PI (PROFIBUS and PROFINET International) has been working on the implementation of further components for a successful market launch – upholding the PI motto, “Go digital. Go PROFINET.” This makes it especially necessary to exercise close coordination and cooperation with partners from other organizations and the various stakeholders within the active PI community, so that the TSN technology and application can work smoothly together across all levels of industrial automation.
The Path from IEEE-TSN to the Application
Through the use of IEEE’s relevant Ethernet standards and on the basis of use cases, a joint working group in the IEC has partnered with the IEEE in developing the IEC/IEEE 60802 TSN Profile for Industrial Automation. The profile defines suitable functions of TSN but also the configuration mechanisms for a convergent TSN network. A first internal draft has already been prepared. Experts from PI member companies have been strongly involved in this process.

The experiences of various technology manufacturers have resulted in improvements and additions as well as normal maintenance work in the overlying layers of the PROFINET specification. Furthermore, the current version of the PROFINET specification is being populated within the framework of the initiated maintenance cycle of the IEC 61158.

This version of the PROFINET specification also creates the basis for the development of test cases and the implementation of the PROFINET tester for certification. After PI worked out a test concept for TSN at an early stage and is now working on the implementation of the first test cases, the planning of further tests for a convergent network is now also underway.

Using these technology bases, the manufacturers are working at full speed on the implementation of their PROFINET solutions. A cross-vendor TSN technology demo has been installed on the PI booth at trade fairs in order to demonstrate its interoperability. Experienced specialists are attending seminars and developer workshops in order to impart the details and background information as well as the next steps of the specifications. The strong interest among manufacturers is evident from the specific questions they are asking about implementing the technology.

But also the most crucial level – namely, the users themselves – are now much more involved than before. The focus of current consultations is not the TSN mechanisms themselves, but rather their application: How can a TSN network be constructed and configured? What does Gbps mean, and how can existing devices and system parts be connected? How can the increasingly necessary vertical communication with higher-level systems, e.g. cloud/edge, be installed in the same step?

On the whole, the many constructive conversations on the different levels reveal that PI’s clear I4.0 strategy has been accepted in the meantime. TSN can thus be advantageously utilized as a future-proof common Layer 2 technology for PROFINET communication in the field, and OPC UA can be used for both the horizontal controller-to-controller and vertical communication. Consistent implementation with the necessary steps is the logical conclusion. PI thus is and remains the reliable solution partner for industrial communication, which is the crucial foundation for the digital transformation of businesses.

87 million nodes.

ProfiBUS & ProfiNet International (PI) has concluded its annual notarised count of the installed base of devices with interfaces using communication technologies from PI. As in previous years, the numbers from 2018 indicate a very positive trend.

ProfiNET Nodes 2018
In the case of ProfiNet, the 5.1 million devices delivered in 2018 represent an increase of 0.6 million over the previous year’s record. By the end of 2018, a total of 26 million ProfiNet devices were working to automate production. Even the number of ProfiBUS devices installed during the year – 2.4 million – represented a rise compared to the previous year. Reaching nearly 61 million, the overall number passed yet another threshold. The total of the two annual figures of 7.5 million also represents an all-time high.

ProfiBUS’s trend in process automation also remains stable. Though the actual number delivered in 2018 – 0.8 million – was slightly less than the previous year, a total of 12.3 million ProfiBUS devices (i. e. 20% of the overall total of 61 million) are now being used in process systems.

With 2.2 million PROFIsafe nodes brought to market in 2018, which corresponds to growth of nearly 25% as compared to the previous year, PROFIsafe also saw its highest annual gain ever. In total, PROFIsafe passed the 10-million hurdle by a considerable margin with its 11 million nodes.

3.3 million IO-Link nodes were brought to market in 2018. The overall count amounts to 11.4 million IO-Link nodes.

ProfiBUS devices in PA 2018
As in the previous years, IO-Link likewise achieved two landmark achievements in 2018. On the one hand, 3.3 million IO-Link nodes were delivered, which amounts to growth of more than 40% year-on-year. And the overall count of 11.4 million IO-Link nodes means that the 10-million hurdle was passed by a considerable margin.

This motivates us to continue with resolve and to implement step by step the strategy presented at the PI Konferenz in Frankfurt (March 2019)," said Karsten Schneider, Chairman of ProfiBUS & ProfiNet International (PI). "The record-setting PI Konferenz attendance also confirms the broad acceptance of our technologies today and the trust in our organization to make the right decisions in the future as well, which in turn will be a crucial element for the economic success of our member companies. Future proofed I/O systems.

Pepperl+Fuchs is connecting LB remote I/O systems to the PROFINET world with their new LB PROFINET gateway. End-to-end communication also ensures optimal use of existing intelligence in the field, representing a crucial step toward making plants suitable for future requirements and Industry 4.0.

In early 2019, Pepperl+Fuchs is to launch the new LB PROFINET gateway, delivering not only conventional PROFINET functionality but also full access to all connected HART devices. In practical terms, this will give users access to HART auxiliary variables as a second measuring value in addition to process variables. Furthermore, the diagnostic data from the field devices can be read out via HART IP, thus significantly increasing transparency and plant availability. The new gateway also offers maximum flexibility since different protocols can run via the same cordset (e.g., PROFINET and HART IP), and, of course, it represents a high-performance solution: up to 80 field devices can be connected to a fully occupied remote I/O system. These devices communicate without a time delay.

Another highlight of the gateway is the intelligent redundancy concept. An integrated switch ensures the functionality of the network at all times based on the medium redundancy protocol (MRP). If a line fails, the ring network is reconfigured to send the data packets via the alternative route. Since the potential for hazards increases as a result of big data being used alongside increased networking of industrial plants, the new PROFINET gateway also fulfills the appropriate safety requirements. The large display, the largest available on the market for this device type, is another highlight that makes the new gateway from Pepperl+Fuchs easy to use. The device status and additional diagnostic data can be read at a glance via RGB LEDs.

Diagnostics and commissioning networks.

Softing has introduced an enhanced version of the proven PROFINET commissioning and diagnostics tool Analyzer IE. The new version is called Analyzer PRO and allows the measurement of passive parameters that give a more detailed insight into the PROFINET network.

As an enhanced version of the commissioning and diagnostics tool Analyzer IE, Analyzer PRO includes a TAP (Terminal Access Point) device called “profiTap”. profiTap records network communication such as jitter, load ratio and device update rate. These so-called passive parameters cannot be determined via actively communicating to devices. With the help of profiTap, all packets traveling to and from the controller are analyzed and network communication is recorded. Eventually, the parameters are integrated in the acceptance report and add an additional layer of information which provides more detailed insights into the PROFINET network.

Analyzer PRO is the combination of Softing’s products TH SCOPE software and TH LINK PC. It monitors and diagnoses the health of industrial networks so that field devices continue to communicate with PLCs which would otherwise cause plant downtime or outages. The generated acceptance reports correspond to the recommendations of the "PROFINET Commissioning Guideline" from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI). Analyzer PRO is tailored to the needs of maintenance and production operations and requires no IT or network expertise on the part of the user. In addition to the PROFINET standard, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and PROFIBUS are also supported.

Ethernet to the Field!

Organizations are cooperating to promote developments for Industrial Ethernet to expand use of EtherNet/IP™, HART-IP™ and PROFINET™ into hazardous locations in the process industry.

FieldComm Group, ODVA and PI (Profibus & Profinet International) have joined together to provide an update on developments that are underway to realize an advanced physical layer for Ethernet that can be used in process automation and instrumentation to connect field devices in remote and hazardous locations, commonly referred to as “APL.” The organizations were joined by representatives from suppliers of process instrumentation and controls in order to provide a well-rounded perspective on the benefits of an advanced physical layer for end users in the process industries, as well as discuss the actions being taken to complete the work needed to realize APL in process field devices.

They have announced the publication of a joint white paper, “Ethernet to the Field,” which lays out the vision and timeline for the realisation of an Ethernet technology suitable for use in remote and hazardous locations founding in the process industries. The organizations foresee that the first Ethernet-connected field devices for use in hazardous locations should appear in 2022. To achieve this result, the organizations are seeking to leverage the work currently underway in the IEEE 802.3cg Task Force, which is developing amendments to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard for an Ethernet physical layer operating at 10 Mb/s over single-pair cable. Because of good progress for the specification of the long-reach solution (10BASE-T1L), it is planned that the IEEE 802.3 standard will include 10BASE-T1L by the end of 2019.

Experts of the APL project have already started the necessary additional developments to define the requirements and develop the necessary technology to achieve an Industrial Ethernet suitable for use in hazardous locations up to Zone 0, Division 1. To get the necessary approval, the experts work closely with a certification body for intrinsic safety to validate the developed Ex protection concepts and to prepare for standardization in the IEC.

Because the future developments for an advanced physical layer for Industrial Ethernet will provide significant benefits to end-users in the process industry at current & future events.
