New I/O module controls stepper motors with Multi-Protocol Communication.

Stepper Motor Controller added to Family of Ethernet Remote I/O Modules with Modbus/TCP, Ethernet/IP, or PROFINET interface to host PC, PLC or PAC.

A stepper motor controller is now available in the Acromag BusWorks® NT Series of Ethernet I/O modules. The new NT2710 module provides six pulse train/logic outputs, six encoder inputs, and four general-purpose digital I/O for motion control applications with stepper motor drivers. A wide variety of commands are supported to precisely control the stepper motor position, speed and direction. Linear, triangular, and trapezoidal S-Curve acceleration/deceleration profiling reduces mechanical stress for smoother movements.

Programmable controllers (PLCs/PACs) interface with the NT2710 module using Modbus TCP/IP, EtherNet/IP, or PROFINET network protocols. An OPC UA server, MQTT client, and RESTful API are also provided to support Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications.

NTE Ethernet models provide dual RJ45 ports for network communication plus the stepper I/O control channels. NTX expansion modules add extra I/O channels to control more motors or axes. Three NTX modules can link to the NTE communication module through an integrated DIN rail bus interfacing up to 64 channels over a single Ethernet IP address. Other NT Series analog and discrete I/O modules offering a variety of signal processing functions can also be combined to monitor or control voltage, current, and temperature signals. Applications include machining, packaging, positioning, dispensing, printing, and many other industrial manufacturing operations. Motion control functions can now be integrated with data acquisition, status monitoring, on/off control, predictive maintenance, energy management, and many other requirements.

“Now you can control stepper motor operations remotely through your PC, PLC or PAC,” explains Robert Greenfield, Acromag’s Director of Business Development. “The NT2710 will execute commands sent over Ethernet using Modbus/TCP, Ethernet/IP, or PROFINET.”

The BusWorks NT2000 Series offers a broad variety of I/O signal processing options. Sixteen I/O configurations are available as either NTE Ethernet I/O or NTX expansion I/O models. Analog I/O models feature up to sixteen inputs or eight outputs for monitoring and controlling current or voltage signals. Discrete I/O models provide sixteen tandem input/output channels or six mechanical relays to sense or switch on/off and high/low logic levels. For temperature measurement, thermocouple and RTD input models support many sensor types and ranges.

Each module supports three industrial protocols (Modbus/TCP, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET) which are selectable using any web browser to configure the network settings and I/O operation. OPC UA, MQTT, and RESTful API support facilitate IIoT applications. The modules typically function as a network server, but also offer Acromag’s i2o® peer-to-peer communication technology to transfer data between modules directly or multicast without a host or master in between. Conditional logic capabilities let users control operations with IF/THEN/ELSE statements.

Gateways enable digital transformation of smart grids.

Digital transformation is converting outdated utility infrastructure into smart grids as the race to achieve net zero carbon emissions picks up speed says Kuru Kuruvilla, Industry Marketing Manager, Moxa . This model aims to improve energy management by collecting and analyzing data in real-time. However, maintaining a smart grid's smooth operation is no easy feat, which has engineers scrambling for ways to enable timely notifications, data analysis, and acquisition among complex subsystems*.
Smart grids are highly complex systems made up of multiple subsystems with unique requirements
Challenges and Solutions.
A smart grid is a vast system comprising multiple subsystems, ranging from traditional power generation, renewable energy sources, and transmission and distribution networks to digital substations, microgrids, and energy storage systems. Each subsystem has its own characteristics and requirements, including power distribution control, power monitoring, energy storage management, and more.

The challenge arises from the diverse communication protocols used among these subsystems. For instance, feeder lines commonly use IEC 61850, DNP3, or IEC 101/104, while meters rely on Modbus, renewable energy systems utilize CANbus, and backup power employs J1939. Unifying all this data poses a complex problem.

In this scenario, effective protocol conversion and data integration become crucial. This is typically done with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), but it is more costly and complex because PLCs require extensive programming. Industrial computers are another option, but such a solution demands expertise in numerous communication protocols. Even after the system has been operating for a while, potential problems can still occur, so installing diagnostics and troubleshooting tools on location is required. Furthermore, the solution must comply with cybersecurity requirements and the hardware robust enough across various environmental conditions.

Protocol gateways have proven to be an effective solution. They facilitate protocol conversion through simple configuration, eliminating the need for complex programming. Therefore, it is possible to accomplish data integration and system communication even without extensive programming knowledge. Here are a few features to look for:

Remote troubleshooting.
In a smart grid, many devices are in remote locations. Remote access and troubleshooting are crucial to minimize the time spent sending out staff to resolve issues on-site. Protocol gateways provide built-in tools for troubleshooting, significantly reducing the time needed for fault diagnosis while also cutting the cost of external debugging tools.

The importance of security.
Because remote connections to protocol gateways are possible, security becomes paramount. Protocol gateways need to provide secure connection features, including HTTPS and SSH connections, strict account and password management, and event log recordings. These features can mitigate potential risks of hacker attacks and ensure system security.

Reliability in harsh environments.
Equipment in smart grids typically operates in harsh environments. Therefore, protocol gateways need to be designed for ruggedness. This includes resistance to wide temperature ranges and electromagnetic interference to ensure the overall reliability of the system. You can consider adding something about fiber options as well as dual redundant power inputs and relay outputs provide added flexibility in challenging applications.

Easy configuration via web console.
Moxa MGate 5119 industrial Ethernet gateway.
Quick setup guides make configuration faster and more cost efficient. With Quick Setup, like that featured on the Moxa MGate Series of Ethernet Gateways, you can easily access protocol conversion modes and finish the configuration in a few steps. These gateways also support Auto Detection for DNP3 serial outstations, allowing the protocol gateway to automatically acquire all outstation objects when configured as a DNP3 master.

Modbus and DNP3 Protocol Traffic Monitor.
Troubleshooting, especially during the installation stage, is crucial to minimizing downtime. Communication issues are frequently caused by incorrect software parameters such as slave ID and register address or incorrect command configuration. If your gateway supports Modbus/DNP3 Protocol Traffic Monitor, you can check the captured data and easily identify the root cause.

Remote maintenance functions.
Protocol gateways should provide a web and Telnet console for remote maintenance. Support for encryption communication functions, including HTTPS and SSH, ensure better network security. In addition, look for gateways with firmware log functions that can record connection events and Modbus maintenance events.

Conclusion.
In the era of smart grids, protocol gateways play a pivotal role in facilitating smooth data flow between different systems. Because of the various communication protocols used among the different subsystems that make up the electrical grid, effective protocol conversion and seamless data communication are essential to fully realizing smart grid potential.

Protocol gateways allow for easy protocol conversion through simple configuration, remote troubleshooting, and system security. The application of this technology will contribute to achieving smarter, more efficient energy management, transforming the way electricity is delivered around the world

Modbus to & from Ethernet.

Modbus and EtherNet/IP are two of the most widespread protocols used in industrial automation, yet a chasm remains between them that prevents bi-directional communication, leading to inefficiencies when engineers try to extract information manually or write software to adapt legacy Modbus devices to Ethernet.

Moxa is helping engineers overcome this hurdle with its MGate 5135/5435 industrial Ethernet gateways for Modbus RTU/ASCII/TCP and Ethernet/IP networking. Designed to make migration cost-effective and easy, the gateways integrate existing Modbus devices onto an EtherNet/IP network by acting as a Modbus client collecting and exchanging data with the EtherNet/IP host. An intuitive web-based console makes configuration simple by eliminating the need to install an extra utility. In addition, a CSV file can be applied for offline configurations. HTTPS encryption of communication ensures higher network security between standalone machines and control systems.

These MGate 5135/5435 gateways offer several maintenance functions that reduce the time and expense associated with network troubleshooting, including LED indicators, protocol diagnostics, traffic monitoring, and tag view. These tools help capture and check data to easily identify the root cause of issues, especially during the installation stage. A status monitoring function notifies a PLC/DCS/SCADA system in the event a Modbus device is disconnected or does not respond, while fault protection executes pre-defined actions if a host becomes disconnected, preventing end-devices from going offline for long periods of downtime.

Moxa MGate 5135/5435 gateways are protected by a rugged and compact metal housing, are DIN-rail mountable, and have built-in serial isolation. The rugged design is suitable for industrial applications such as factory automation, power, oil and gas, water and wastewater, and other process industries.

Ethernet remote I/O modules.

Ethernet expandable I/O modules now offer field-selectable EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP/IP networking protocol.

The new BusWorks® NT series remote I/O modules from Acromag, are now enhanced with EtherNet/IP support. Ethernet industrial protocol, EtherNet/IP, is traditional Ethernet combined with an industrial application layer protocol targeted to industrial automation. Applications for these high-performance Ethernet I/O modules are remote monitoring and control, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance, building HVAC energy consumption, and more.

These modules were tested at an ODVA, Open DeviceNet Vendors Association, vendor-independent Test Service Provider, and received an ODVA Declaration of Conformity. This organization confirms interoperability across vendors and systems.

NTE Ethernet I/O models have dual RJ45 ports and a webserver with Modbus TCP/IP and Ethernet/IP communication to monitor or control the internal I/O channels. An integrated DIN rail bus allows connections of up to three NTX expansion I/O modules. Each I/O module adds up to 16 input or output signals allowing a mix of voltage, current, temperature, TTL, and relay control signals networked on one IP address. The space-saving design requires only 25mm of DIN rail per module. Ethernet I/O modules distribute 9-32V DC power along the DIN rail bus to expansion modules. Hazardous location approvals, high noise immunity, and -40 to 70°C operation make this I/O ideal for use in harsh environments.

“NT Series Ethernet I/O modules are user-configurable for Ethernet/IP or Modbus/TCP, offering a convenient solution for engineers with multi-protocol control systems,” states Robert Greenfield, Acromag’s Business Development Manager.

The NT2000 Series offers a broad variety of I/O signal processing options. Nine I/O configurations are available as either NTE Ethernet I/O or NTX expansion I/O models. Analog I/O models feature eight differential or sixteen single-ended inputs for monitoring current or voltage signals. Discrete I/O models provide 16 tandem input/output channels with either active high/low input and sinking/sourcing output. A six-channel mechanical relay output model is also available. For temperature monitoring, a thermocouple input model supports many sensor types and also millivolt ranges. More models will release over the coming months for additional I/O functions.

Profinet communication is planned for release soon. Each module will support all three protocols which are selectable using any web browser to configure the network settings and I/O operation. The modules typically function as a network slave, but also offer Acromag’s i2o® peer-to-peer communication technology to transfer data between modules directly without a host or master in between. Multicast capability is included.

Acromag, a mid-sized international corporation, has been developing and manufacturing measurement and control products for more than 60 years. They offer a complete line of industrial I/O products including process instruments, signal conditioning equipment, data acquisition boards, distributed I/O systems, and communication devices.

A fast, comprehensive overview of the plant.

The web-based visualisation software PASvisu now with Modbus/TCP interface and Secure-Client – Open for all visualisation tasks - but secure

Obtain a fast, comprehensive overview of a plant: that’s the purpose of Pilz’s web-based visualisation software PASvisu. The new version of PASvisu now also supports the Modbus/TCP protocol. The protocol enables all controllers to be connected quickly, along with other industrial components. The update also includes a secure Client/Server connection, enabling data from the PASvisu Server to be transferred safely to the user's visualisation system.

From the new version v1.10 for PASvisu, the web-based visualisation software supports not only OPC UA but also the Modbus/TCP protocol. This enables a simple exchange of process data between PASvisu and almost any control system. It is also possible to process data from different controllers simultaneously in one visualisation project.

As an open system, there is no need to change the existing automation infrastructure when using PASvisu: PASvisu can be used on existing machines with the available controllers. It can also be used via almost any end device, e.g. HMIs already integrated within the machine, external PCs or tablets.

“Secure-Client” ensures greater security during data exchange.  The “secure” Client/Server connection is also new. All data traffic between PASvisu Clients, Builder and the Server is now fully encrypted. At the same time user authentication has been increased: only authenticated Clients can log in to the PASvisu Server. That prevents manipulations and guarantees secure data transfer within the overall visualisation project.

Ensuring clean air!

HMS Networks has launched a new IR-based Intesis® AC interface that enables integration of any Air Conditioning unit, regardless of brand, into Modbus or BACnet Building Automation Systems.

The importance of controlling Air Conditioning systems
HVAC systems are usually the largest energy-consumers in a building. Therefore, it is crucial for building owners to monitor and control these systems to save costs and energy. Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic has made it increasingly important to find new ways of installing and using AC units, as ventilation and “clean air” has become a major concern.

The Air Conditioning market is growing fast with new brands and different types of AC units constantly emerging. This makes it challenging for building owners to integrate AC-units into their specific Building Management System (BMS).

A Universal IR interface compatible with more than 100 AC Units
The Intesis offering includes the most comprehensive portfolio of AC interfaces on the market, enabling monitoring and control of air conditioning units from any home or building automation system.

The portfolio is now further strengthened as HMS launches a universal IR-based Intesis AC interface for integrating AC units to Modbus or BACnet-based automation systems. The new interface connects to the AC unit via the IR link which is already used by most AC units to communicate with their remote control. The Intesis IR-based AC Interface is already compatible with more than 100 IR remote controllers and their associated AC units.

Fast configuration and diagnostic thanks to Intesis MAPS
The new AC interface solution is configured using the Intesis MAPS tool, which brings many advantages for the system integrator. With a project-based configuration, all the interfaces installed can be configured in a single MAPS template, making it easy to copy device configurations and set up new projects. Thanks to the diagnostics function, the commissioning process and any post-installation assistance is also simplified.

Low cost temperature measurement.

Moore Industries’ TCS Temperature Concentrator System is a solution for low-cost temperature measurements.

At its heart is the 16-channel, loop-powered (2-wire) TCM Temperature Concentrator Module. When two TCM modules are used in a TCS, up to 32 signals can be monitored over one twisted wire pair. The TCM is approved for use in hazardous areas (Div 2/Zone 2 and Div 1/Zone 0/1) and can be used with an HMC (HART to MODBUS RTU Converter) when communication with a MODBUS RTU master is required.

Using the TCS provides a precision measurement at less than 25 percent of the cost of a comparable standalone smart temperature transmitter. Hardware, wiring and installation costs are reduced because the TCS eliminates the need to install a dedicated transmitter and twisted-wire pair for each measurement. The compact design of the TCS also means a significant savings in real estate needs to measure temperatures. These cost savings are just a few of the benefits of the TCS solution. Other key features include:

Universal Input Options: The TCM can be set to accept RTD (2-wire, 3-wire, 4-wire, PT, Cu or Ni), thermocouple (Types J, K, E, T, R, S, N, B or C), resistance/potentiometer (0 to 4000 ohms) and millivolt (-50 to 1,000mV) inputs. Custom input linearization can be defined for any input.

Deployment of HART and MODBUS RTU Communications: The HMC allows for communications with a MODBUS RTU-based host system. The ability to use either the standard HART or MODBUS communications protocols allow easy interface to a wide range of DCS, PLC and computer-based networks.

Generating Alarms: If the HMC is utilized it can be programmed to provide two alarm relay outputs. The relays can send a master alarm when the HMC detects one, any or all of the following fault conditions within the system:
No HART signal
Broken wire
Hardware error
Bad configuration
Input saturated
Input out of table range
Both alarms can be set with a time delay, which specifies how long the alarm condition needs to exist before the alarm trips.

Versatile Programming: The TCM’s operating parameters can be configured from any HART-based system or, using a standard HART handheld, from anywhere along the twisted wire pair. The TCM can also be configured using our Intelligent PC Configuration software.

For the measurement of pH/ORP, conductivity or oxygen, MemoRail Modbus can be combined with all Memosens sensors, whether pH glass, IsFET, oxygen, or conductivity (conductive and inductive). What's more, the DIN rail module is the only analyzer of its class that enables the connection of LDO sensors (luminescent dissolved oxygen) for the optical measurement of oxygen. The new devices come as single- or dual-channel versions with freely combinable parameters or sensors. Either two freely selectable Memosens sensors or a Memosens sensor and a SE 740 LDO can be connected. Additionally, the transmitters allow for the connection of the new SE 554 X/1-AMSN and SE 555 X/1-AMSN combination sensors that synchronously measure pH and ORP values. In this way, a dual-channel MemoRail model provides four readings as well as temperature.

The network address for rapid Modbus configuration is set via DIP switches on the front panel. The 24 V DC supply can be connected either via TBUS or via a cable connected to the terminals at the back. Red and green LEDs indicate the device status, communication interruptions, defective sensors or device settings unsuitable to the sensor as well as the device's maintenance requirements. Knick provides a 3-year warranty on the MemoRail Modbus transmitters.

Postioning in world of Industrie 4.0!

The detection of objects in systems is an important part of automation today. Objects have to be reliably detected and measured, as well as verifying that they are correctly positioned. The scope of possible applications is almost limitless and is continuously expanding (for example, detecting valve and flap positions, the position of PV panels for optimal exposure to light, the position of a ship's rudder, automation tasks in the machine-tool industry, etc.)

As well as measuring and displaying electrical parameters, Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG offers position sensoring solutions for angular position and tilt measurements. These precision sensors are an important link between the mechanical hardware and control intelligence. Under the KINAX brand name, the product offering ranges from basic to the robust devices needed for applications in harsh environments Based on a unique measurement concept and housing design, the position sensors ensure very high levels of precision, reliability and durability. Their primary objective is to ensure that systems, productions and processes operate trouble-free over the long term.

The function of these angular transducers is to capture rotational or translational movement and convert it into an electrical output signal. The mechanical structure of the sensors is designed to withstand very high stresses and offers, in combination with the patented and wear-proof capacitive-based measurement process, measurement results that are reliable at all times. A plug-and-play system ensures that on-site commissioning is very simple. Even redundant measurements can be performed easily with the help of hollow shaft transmitter.

As well as classical angular transducers, their product portfolio also includes tilt sensors. Using the principle of the plumb line, these sensors capture deviations from the horizontal or the vertical, with reference to the Earth's gravity. The main advantage compared to transmitter in this case, is that the mechanical coupling is takes places directly with the object to be measured. The parameter settings are straightforward and performed on-site. No time-consuming calibration is required and absolute measurement values are available at all times. In addition, the high quality of the housing material and the high degree of protection guarantee maximum durability.

With the KINAX HW730 angular transducer, Camille Bauer Metrawatt AG now joins the world of Industry 4.0. Thanks to the direct Ethernet link via Modbus TCP, data consistency is ensured from the sensor up to the control and data centres. It should be noted that, thanks to the Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology, the operating voltage is sourced directly through the Modbus TCP. This completely eliminates the need for communication gateways and reduces the complexity, design effort and, above all, costs.

Easy Data Integration.

The Softing gateway dataFEED uaGate MB is commercially available now. The new product enables easy and secure integration of process- and machine data coming from Modbus PLCs with IoT- and Industry 4.0 solutions.

It is a gateway for communication between Modbus PLCs in industrial automation networks and IT applications. The product provides access to process- and machine data via the OPC UA interoperability standard and via the MQTT protocol. It supports relevant IT security standards such as SSL encryption and X.509 certificates, and it can connect multiple applications in parallel.

OPC UA has established itself as the predominant interoperability standard for OT/IT integration, and MQTT is the preferred communication protocol for many cloud based applications and IoT platforms. The gateway also supports hybrid architectures, running partly on premises, partly in the cloud.

“Modbus PLCs without an integrated OPC UA server are very common in existing factories” says Sebastian Schenk, Product Manager Industrial Data Intelligence. “With dataFEED uaGate MB, Softing offers automation departments and OT a very easy-to-use device to implement a flexible and secure interface towards IT.”

dataFEED uaGate MB extends connectivity to Modbus PLCs, supports globally recognized security standards, and is field proven since it is based on the same hardware platform as the dataFEED uaGate SI. @SoftingIA #PAuto #IoT #Industrie4

Air velocity with Modbus.

The EE671 compact air flow probe from E+E Elektronik measures air velocity up to 20 m/s (4000 ft/m) and is ideal for HVAC applications. The new version with Modbus RTU interface facilitates the EE761 integration into modern building automation systems.

The EE671 probe is dedicated for reliable air flow measurement in heating and ventilation systems. It features the new E+E VTQ thin-film flow sensing element. Due to innovative transfer molding, the sensing element is very robust and highly insensitive to contamination, which allows accurate and long-term stable measurements even under harsh conditions.

The probe is available with fixed cable or M12 connector. The alignment strip and the matching mounting flange allow for easy installation and precise positioning of the EE671 in the ventilation duct. The sensing head design is optimized for low angle dependency.

In addition to the Modbus version, the EE671 is also available with voltage output 0-1 V, 0-5 V or 0-10V. An optional configuration kit makes it easy to scale the output, set the Modbus parameters and perform the adjustment of EE671.

Highly integrated communication with ModBus.

The second product in their EtherNet/IP Linking Devices family has been released by HMS Industrial Networks. The new EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device allows users to connect devices on Modbus-TCP to a Rockwell ControlLogix® or CompactLogix® PLC. Users will benefit from the unique integration to Rockwell’s Studio5000 Logix Designer, as all configuration is made from inside Studio 5000.
The EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device from HMS Industrial Networks
The new EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device makes it possible to include any automation device with Modbus TCP-communication into an EtherNet/IP-based network architecture supporting over 8000 bytes of IO data in total. Besides being a more cost-effective alternative to in-chassis communication modules, the distributed EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device also brings other advantages:

Improved system architecture
Contrary to an in-chassis module which is physically connected to the PLC, the EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device can be mounted close to the connected devices. This means that it is possible to establish a connection via a single Ethernet cable instead of multiple network specific cables. All EtherNet/IP Linking Devices from HMS support ODVA’s Device Level Ring (DLR) for ring topology.

Easy configuration
Users access serial protocol configuration through their existing Studio 5000 software. All configuration is made inside Studio 5000 where there is support for Process Variable Data Tags, as well as manual and automatic generation of named and structured Studio 5000 Controller Tags without any required user logic.

High performance and stability
Since the Linking Device operates stand-alone (distributed), it doesn’t affect PLC backplane performance (PLC execution time), even when large amounts of data are transferred. The PLC simply scans the Linking Device as if it were any other I/O device on the network.

Easier system integration
“We released our first EtherNet/IP Linking Device for serial communication in early 2016 and it was very well received by the market”, says Markus Bladh, Product Manager at HMS. “With the new EtherNet/IP to Modbus-TCP Linking Device, we are able to offer a cost-efficient connectivity solution between these networks supporting big data transfer. And, thanks to the very tight integration to Studio 5000, Rockwell users can easily access data from Modbus-TCP devices such as I/O systems, drives, sensors and instruments.”
