A secret weapon against leaks.

"Customers have been asking us to make sure that we can prove something that's completely leak-free."

Jason Sewell
Air Power East, a family-run business with over 30 years of experience as a premier distributor of Atlas Copco, specializes in providing high-quality compressed air systems to various industries across East Anglia. Under the leadership of Jason Sewell, the company has established a strong reputation for delivering reliable and efficient solutions.

Challenge.
However, they faced a significant challenge in ensuring their systems were completely leak-free, a concern shared by their clients, including an agricultural manufacturer managed by Paul Musgrove. Jason highlighted the issue, stating, "Customers have been asking us to make sure that we can prove something that's completely leak-free."

Concurrently, Paul Musgrove was seeking an effective way to manage and maintain their compressed air systems, with a specific focus on reducing energy waste and operational costs, emphasizing the need to "save money where we can, especially with energy prices as they are."

This dual challenge called for an innovative approach to maintain Air Power East's commitment to quality and efficiency while addressing the specific needs of their clients.

Solution.
To address the intertwined challenges, Jason reached out to Baseline-RTS, an independent supplier of training and predictive maintenance equipment. They introduced Air Power East to the FLIR Si124 camera, an advanced acoustic imaging tool, capable of accurately detecting air leaks. Jason explains, "We sat down and did a bit of market research on a few different models and then came to the top. So, we contacted FLIR to come along and show us the Si124, and we've loved it ever since."

The Si124 is a lightweight, one-handed tool designed to quickly locate pressurized leaks in compressed air systems or detect partial discharge from high-voltage electrical systems. It is equipped with 124 microphones to produce a precise acoustic image that visually displays ultrasonic information. This image is transposed in real time on top of a digital camera picture, allowing users to accurately pinpoint the source of sound. The Si124 camera can detect issues up to 10 times faster than traditional methods, even in loud industrial environments. Additionally, it is compatible with FLIR Thermal Studio suite for offline editing, analysis, and advanced report creation, and it can help facilities save money on utility bills and delay the expense of installing new compressors.

Results.
The use of the Si124 camera brought about transformative results. Jason explained the camera's effectiveness: "We've managed to walk around with the customer, showing them exactly what we're finding on our screen. And if we do find any small leaks, we can rectify them and then we can prove to the customer that their system is leak-free." This approach not only heightened the efficiency of the compressed air systems but also solidified customer trust in Air Power East's services.

Quantitative results underscore the Si124's impact. The camera enabled the detection of leaks amounting to approximately 100 cubic feet per minute (CFM), which is roughly 50 liters per second. This translates to about 18.5 kilowatts of compressor power, leading to substantial energy and cost savings, particularly in light of rising energy prices.

Conclusion.
Air Power East's adoption of the FLIR Si124 camera to address the complex challenges in compressed air systems illustrates the power of innovative technology in industrial settings. The successful detection and rectification of air leaks not only enhanced operational efficiency but also led to considerable energy and cost savings for the agricultural manufacturer. This case study demonstrates the effectiveness of advanced tools in solving intricate industrial problems and highlights the importance of technology-driven solutions in optimizing industrial processes.

Small change means big operational improvements.

Acoustic cameras detects air leaks from 2 - 65 kHz

The range of acoustic imaging cameras, the Si124, Si124-PD and Si124-LD, from Teledyne FLIR, now offers an improved bandwidth range for detecting compressed air leaks in industrial settings. The change means that the industry-leading range can now detect leaks from anywhere between 2 to 65 kHz and adds crucial functionality to the previous peak bandwidth of 35 kHz.

While it may seem like a minor change, the operational impact of the improvements cannot be overstated: it means marked savings for industrial applications globally, reducing costs and improving reliability. The improved Si124 range promises easier, more impactful inspections

The range of three cutting-edge Si124 models are now equipped to measure virtually all compressed air leaks in manufacturing settings - regardless of how small and seemingly insignificant. This unique range covering 63 kHz is scientifically the optimal sound spectrum range for detecting leaks, which occur on this measurable threshold. Detecting ranges outside of this spectrum actually detracts from long-term functionality as detecting background noise beyond 65 kHz can interfere with baseline readings and negatively impact leak detection.

Failure to detect air leaks can cost companies thousands of pounds in replacement costs for units that are not operating optimally, and can have a knock-on effect on production when parts are replaced and production lines forced into downtime.

Federico De Lucia, Team Lead of Condition Monitoring Specialists (EMEA Solutions) at Teledyne FLIR explains why this seemingly small change cements the Si124 range as operating across the optimum bandwidth for detecting compressed air leaks in industrial applications. “Let’s look at, for example, a compressed air leak from a small hole of just 1.5 millimetres and on a network of compressed air at seven bars of pressure. Two years ago, with a price of €0.07 per kilowatt hour, that would have cost a company roughly €1500 (£1300) per year, if we assume an average operating time of 6000 hours.
“Now that the energy situation is more challenging, it means that costs may be three, four, even five times higher in some cases, which could be a cost of up to £7500 a year - which is a shocking amount simply for failing to identify a single small hole in a vital production component. This is staggering when you consider the scale of industrial manufacturing and the scope for leaks to crop up unnoticed.”

Tightness testing is an outdated model
“The EV industry is a particularly timely example of how acoustic imaging can be used to replace outdated inspection models, given the rising cost of energy on all fronts.

“This is because the batteries for electric vehicles must be hermetically sealed to ensure they hit operational guidelines and safety standards. They must be both airtight and watertight to keep dirt, dust and other external contaminants from penetrating the core components, which could cause the device to short-circuit and become a fire risk. “Traditionally, these units were probed by mass spectrometers to identify foreign compounds within the casing or through the more rudimentary method of immersing the units in water to identify leaks by looking for air bubbles - which we call tightness testing - but this was incredibly impractical, as well as wasteful.

“Teledyne FLIR’s improved range of acoustic imaging can detect leaks quicker than this outdated model as well as identify much smaller leaks that are not visible to the naked eye, able to be heard by the ear, or even detected on traditional thermography. The improved bandwidth range of the Si124 ensures that operators are only focusing on the exact and specific frequencies that compressed air leaks can be detected on - and not wasting valuable battery power or AI functionality struggling to filter out avoidable background noise on higher frequencies.”

Lighter and more ergonomic than any other acoustic imaging camera for industrial inspections.
As well as benefiting from the optimum range of bandwidth for compressed air leak detection, the Si124 range also offers clear advantages for inspectors in industrial applications.

The Si124 range is really lightweight. In fact, it is almost 60% lighter than rival models on the market at just 1.25kg including the battery. This makes sure that they can be used with a single hand, freeing up the operator to carry out harder-to-reach inspections in challenging environments. The lightweight range can be used for up to two hours and can even be operated in a range of challenging industrial settings from between –10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F), making it one of the most robust models available.

The acoustic imaging camera range is able to detect problems up to 10 times faster than traditional methods, including detecting air leaks, minimising excess utility costs and making avoidable equipment failures in pneumatic machinery a thing of the past.

The range also has an agile AI which uses projective algorithms to estimate how much a detected compressed air leak will cost by evaluating the air lost in real-time, calculating the spend per kWh and displaying an expected saving per year. Critically, this ensures that inspectors have valuable evidence needed to justify any incurred repair costs across the production line.

The Si124 range also benefits from Thermal Studio: a FLIR-exclusive plug-in which is able to build reports with more than 100 images quickly with fully customizable templates, overlays, and formulas. It streamlines thermal imaging analysis and ensures that inspectors are able to analyse, edit, segment and edit thermal video. The improved FLIR Si124-PD, Si124-LD, and the original Si124 Industrial Acoustic Imaging Camera models are available for purchase globally from Teledyne FLIR and its authorised dealers.

Air velocity sensors.

Users Can Combine Air Velocity Data With Existing Temperature Data for Unparalleled Insight Into Thermal Efficiency

The new PAV3000 series of economical, high-performance air velocity sensors with digital I2C output and a surface-mount footprint for thermal management and filter monitoring in even the most space-constrained locations has been announced by Posifa Technologies. Unlike thermistor-based solutions, the PAV3000 has a MEMS sensor core that is minimally affected by ambient temperature changes and which provides instant real-time feedback on proper air flow at critical locations.

Air velocity data perfectly complements temperature information to provide the best insight into thermal efficiency. Because the PAV3000 helps identify areas that require unusually high air flow to maintain stable temperatures, layouts for rack enclosures with air cooling — such as those found in data centers — can be modified to reduce cooling demands for increased energy savings. In applications such as HVAC systems, air velocity measurements can be used to determine when filters need to be replaced. This ensures hardware is adequately protected during heavy use, and it allows customers with light usage requirements to benefit from extended change intervals.

PAV3000 series devices feature Posifa's third-generation thermal flow die, which uses a pair of thermopiles to detect changes in temperature gradient caused by mass flow. The result is excellent repeatability of 1 % FS and accuracy of 5 % FS. The solid-state thermal isolation structure on the sensor die eliminates the need for a surface cavity or the fragile membrane used in competing technologies, making the sensor resistant to clogging and pressure shock.

Measuring air velocity at 7 m/s (PAV3005V) and 15 m/s (PAV3015V), the PAV3000 series devices offer extremely fast response times of 125 ms typical in a compact, robust package. The air velocity sensors feature a 12-bit digital output, 3.3 V supply voltage, and supply current of 13 mA.

Air velocity & Tempearture sensor for thermal management.

Posifa Technologies has announced its new PAV1000 series of air velocity sensors for data centre thermal management and HVAC applications such as filter monitoring. Measuring air velocity at 7 m/s (PAV1005V) and 15 m/s (PAV1015V), the devices offer extremely fast response times of 125 ms typical in a compact, robust package.

The PAV1000 series was designed as an economical, high-performance air velocity sensor for thermal management and filter monitoring in even the most space-constrained locations, such as rack enclosures with air cooling in data centers. Unlike thermistor-based solutions, the Posifa MEMS sensor core is minimally affected by ambient temperature changes and provides instant real-time feedback on proper air flow at critical locations.

Air velocity data perfectly complements temperature information to provide the best insight into thermal efficiency. By identifying areas that require unusually high air flow to maintain stable temperatures, layouts can be modified to reduce cooling demands for increased energy savings. In HVAC applications, air velocity measurements can be used to determine when filters need to be replaced. Seeing air leaks!

Compressed air systems can lose a significant amount of air through leakage. For example, according to the United States ‘Compressed Air and Gas Institute’ (CAGI), the average compressed air system loses 30 percent of its air through leaks. Locating those leaks has been a time-consuming and tedious process. The new Fluke™ ii900 Sonic Industrial Imager enables maintenance teams to quickly, and visually, pinpoint the location of compressed air, gas, and vacuum system leaks even during peak production periods. Leaks can be detected in a matter of minutes.

“We rely heavily on air - it’s one of the most important utilities we have coming into the building,” said Josh Stockert, Maintenance Technician III at Genie (a Terex Brand). “With the Fluke ii900 Industrial Imager, we can stand on the sideline and inspect the air line that goes across while carts and people are moving underneath. We’re not affecting them, but we can tag it then fix it at lunch instead of waiting for a premium weekend shift to fix it.
“Now we don't have to look at adding new, bigger compressors or receiver chains, so not only is it capacity and energy savings, but now we’re talking about capital savings.”

With minimal training, technicians can identify compressed air leaks considerably faster than using traditional diagnostic methods. Now checking for air leaks can be performed during the typical maintenance routine.

Featuring an array of microphones combined with the new SoundSight™ technology, the handheld Fluke ii900 Sonic Industrial Imager filters out background noise so maintenance teams can accurately locate leaks in compressed air systems, even in the noisiest environments.

The seven-inch LCD touchscreen overlays a SoundMap™ on a visual image for quick leak location identification. The straightforward, intuitive interface allows technicians to isolate the sound frequency of the leak to filter out loud background noise. In a matter of hours, the team can inspect the entire plant – during peak operations. Images can be saved and exported for reporting purposes.

The Fluke ii900 was designed in partnership with Sorama, an Eindhoven-based company specialising in noise control and sound analysis solutions. The combination of Sorama’s long history and expertise in acoustic imaging and Fluke’s leadership in diagnostic industrial test and measurement equipment led to the creation a tool that has the durability and usability required for industrial maintenance applications.

Mini-vacuum pump.

After the launch of the LEM, a new generation mini vacuum module integrating, in a smaller size, all the functions of the vacuum pump, COVAL has entered a new phase with the LEMAX. Emphasis with this new product is on energy saving through continuous monitoring and regulation.

Areas of use
COVAL recommends using the LEMAX for gripping airtight pieces in the following materials: glass – plastic – treated wood – sheet metal …
Industries concerned are: Packaging - Robotics - Plastics
Applications: Clamping, transfer.

What makes the difference
• ASC technology : energy consumption reduced by 60 to 97%
• Integrated regulation : energy savings, reduced consumption and noise level
• Reduced size : assembly near the suction cups for better efficiency
• Holding time : Two times faster than multi-stage technology
• Non-clogging : Thanks to the through-type silencer, no maintenance necessary
With this new mini-pump, the guiding principle is energy saving. The LEMAX integrates ASC (AIR SAVING CONTROL) technology for the very first time. It generates energy savings of between 60 to 97%, depending on the applications.

Air is only consumed to create the vacuum and to enable gripping and moving the piece. Once the regulated vacuum level has been reached, a valve closes, enabling the piece to be held without any consumption of energy. If the vacuum level drops, an air intake is generated until it returns to the initial value.

The ASC analyses the application and adapts to airtight or porous pieces in order to optimize energy use and consumption.

Compactness: the LEMAX integrates all the main functions in a single module: pressure control, pilot solenoid valves, non-clogging through-type silencer, electronic vacuum switch, M8 connector (Plug & Play direct connection), and adjustable blow-off. Its reduced size and weight (130 grams) enables it to be connected as close as possible to the suction cups for reduced gripping time without drop in pressure.

Communication: The LEMAX supplies accurate information to the user at each operation phase. It has a dialogue façade which operates directly on the electronic card, controlling the main functions and settings.

Modularity: the LEMAX adjusts itself to the needs of the integrator and user. It is available in 6 configurations: three standard nozzle diameters (1; 1,2; 1,4 mm) allowing an intake flow of 29 à 70 Nl/mn (90% maximum vacuum).

It can be provided with a normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO) solenoid valve. This alternative is recommended for applications where safety of the gripped piece must imperatively be ensured during an inadvertent power failure, this even in the case of leakage (fail-safe).

It is possible to combine several LEMAX on island assemblies with a single pressure supply.

How to Improve Aerodynamics with single point load cells and digital indicators.

Challenge – To Evaluate the Aerodynamics of Scale Models
Scale Engineering design and manufacture wind tunnels, industrial test rigs and research equipment for schools, universities and the commercial sector.  Their newly designed Scale Wind Tunnel can test the aerodynamics of scale models using the same principles as a full sized version, without the need for a huge test laboratory.  Recently used at Purbeck School’s Science Fair, the Scale Wind Tunnel uses two single point load cells and Intuitive2-L digital indicators, from Applied Measurements,  enabling students to evaluate, amend and improve their LEGO model design.
How Does It Work?
The Scale Wind Tunnel has two OBUG-5kg single point load cells fixed at 90˚ to each other installed on a base plate inside the tunnel.  Once the scale model is mounted inside the tunnel, the air is forced into the tunnel through the laminar air intake and along a honeycomb structure to decrease the air turbulence.  As the tunnel narrows, the airspeed increases, allowing one OBUG single point load cell to measure the lift force and the other to measure the drag force (the resistance generated by the model inside the tunnel).  The results are relayed to two separate Intuitive2-L digital indicators for analysis, enabling the students to make necessary adjustments to their design.

OBU Single Point Compression Load Cells
  • Dual Cantilever Design
  •  IP65 Protection Rating as Standard (IP67 Optional)
  • High Accuracy <±0.03% of Rated Capacity
  • Sense Wire Facility
  • Moment Insensitive
  • Aluminium Construction – Light Weight and Low Cost
  • Customisation Available
  • Optional Integration on Finished Weighing Platform
Their range of OBU single point load cells are extremely resistant to off-centre loading thanks to their dual cantilever design.  They are moment insensitive meaning that only one unit is required centrally positioned to make a weighing system, or, as in the case of Scale Engineering, allows them to be used in tandem to create a dual-axis measurement system with minimal crosstalk.  This makes them incredibly cost-effective and ideal for applications where a low cost is essential.  Our single point load cells have an IP65 protection rating with an option to increase to IP67 on some capacities if you need them for an even harsher environment.  Their common uses include low force measurement applications such as manufacturing, testing, research and development such as the Scale Wind Tunnel application.  Their aluminium construction makes them very lightweight, while still delivering highly stable and accurate results to <±0.03% of the rated capacity.

Intuitive2-L Load Cell Digital Indicators
  •  6 Digit Display
  • Simple and Easy to Use – No-Menu Programming
  • IP65 Protection Rating
  • 20-Bit A/D Converter
  • Can Power up to Four 350Ω Strain Gauge Load Cells
  • Modular Construction

Air velocity transmitter for HVAC.

Accurate Control of Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems

The EE650 air velocity transmitter from E+E Elektronik is optimized for accurate, reliable and long-term stable measurement of air velocity in ventilation ducts. With selectable measuring ranges 0-10/15/20 m/s (0-2000/3000/4000 ft/min) and high accuracy, the EE650 suits perfectly all common HVAC applications. The new E+E VTQ flow sensor element of EE650 operates on the thermal anemometer principle, is very robust and highly insensitive to pollution.

Thanks to the design and the innovative flow profile of the VTQ flow sensor element manufactured by E+E in thin-film technology, EE650 features an outstanding resistance to contamination. The sensor element impresses also with high mechanical stability realized through state-of-the-art transfer-moulding technology. The exceptional long-term stability and the wear-free thermal measuring principle minimize the EE650 maintenance demand and ownership costs.

The IP65 / NEMA 4 enclosure protects optimally the electronics against pollution. Due to its design, the EE650 can be very easily installed and commissioned. The mounting flange facilitates precise positioning of the probe in the air stream. The duct version can be also mounted directly onto the ventilation duct. With the remote probe version, the sensing probe can be installed up to 10 m away from the electronics.

The measuring range, the output signal (4-20 mA or 0-10 V) and the response time can be selected with jumpers on the electronics board. The maintenance is considerably simplified by a digital interface which allows for EE650 to be adjusted by the user.

Emissions monitoring to be studied!

The organisers of CEM 2016, the international emissions monitoring event, have published details of the conference that will run over three days in Lisbon from 18th to 20th May. Featuring speakers from 13 countries there will be 48 presentations within seven main themes:

  1. Regulation Standards and Quality
  2. Predictive Emission Monitoring
  3. Innovative Measurement Technology
  4. Fine Particulate Monitoring
  5. Mercury and other Trace Metals
  6. Fugitive Emissions
  7. Industrial Case Studies

The Conference presentations will address a wide range of testing and monitoring issues covering the latest international regulations, standards, methods and technologies in applications such as power stations, waste incineration, laboratory analysis, ship emissions and the Maritime Directive, biofuels, coal and biomass fired boilers, hazardous waste incineration, cement plants, chlor-alkali plants and landfill emissions.

CEM 2016 organiser Marcus Pattison believes that the CEM 2016 Conference is particularly well timed. “The emissions reduction targets agreed by 195 nations at COP21 in Paris will place a growing emphasis on the accuracy and reliability of monitoring at a time when, thanks to Volkswagen, public understanding of air pollution issues has never been greater. The automotive industry is keen to highlight the significance of industrial emissions, so it is vital that industry continues to provide ‘real-world’ data that can be trusted."

Humidity & air velocity calibration at the highest level.

E+E Elektronik maintains the national standards for humidity and air velocity in Austria as a designated laboratory of the Federal Office for Metrology, BEV (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen). Recently, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) authorised E+E Elektronik to use the CIPM MRA logo (International Committee for Weights and Measures - Mutual Recognition Arrangement) on its BEV/E+E calibration certificates.

Website provides an overview of all
E+E calibration services including
online calibration request.
Only National Metrological Institutes (NMI) and their designated laboratories, which are the highest metrological authorities of a country, are permitted to use the CIPM MRA logo. The prerequisite for this is that their Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) data is listed in the BIPM Key Comparison Database (KCDB). A certificate issued by a laboratory under the CIPM MRA is accepted by assessors from Conformity Assessment Bodies with the highest level of confidence.

As designated laboratory of the BEV, E+E Elektronik is an implicit cosignatory of the MRA. The E+E calibration laboratory undergoes regular audits by international experts, participates in international measurement comparisons and established a quality management system certified according to ISO 17025.

E+E Elektronik offers calibration services for humidity, dewpoint, air velocity, gas mass flow, temperature, CO2 and pressure. Calibrations are carried out either in the designated laboratory (NMI) or the accredited OEKD calibration laboratory. Additionally, the E+E service department performs in-house or on-site ISO calibrations according to the E+E standard.

Miniature air flow transmitter for HVAC

The new transmitter EE671 from E+E Elektronik measures air velocity up to 20 m/s. Thanks to its compact design it is ideal for mass applications in HVAC. The flow sensing element sets new standards in terms of accuracy and resistance to pollutants.

The built-in VTQ flow sensing element based on thin-film technology works on the hot-film anemometer principle. Thanks to its innovative design - made possible by the use of the latest transfer molding technology - the sensor is particularly resistant to contamination. A high reproducibility of the sensor characteristics, fast response time, low angle dependence and excellent long-term stability are further advantages of the high-quality sensing element.

The EE671 is available with cable or plug connection. An alignment strip on the probe and matching mounting flange simplifies installation and ensures proper alignment of the sensor. The flange enables the immersion depth to be infinetly variable.

The measured air velocity is available as linear voltage output (optional 0-1V, 0-5V or 0-10V). The digital interface in combination with a configuration kit allows the customer to set the measurement range, to configure the output signal and to adjust the transmitter.

The EE671 is suitable for use in heating and ventilation systems, for flow monitoring and control or for inlet air monitoring in ovens.
