Intriguingly, the Signal Group stand at AQE 2024 (9/10 October Birmingham GB), will be staffed by gas analysis experts wearing T-shirts saying ‘Ask me about MCERTS!’ It’s too early to say more, but anyone interested in VOC emissions monitoring should head for Stand-L5…if only to try out the detachable tablets.

With a heavy focus on technology development, Signal’s MD James Clements is keen for visitors to see the latest advances in gas analysis equipment. “For many people this will be the first opportunity to see the detachable tablets that now sit where our instrument screens used to be. These tablets are now standard across our entire range, opening up a new world of opportunities, and we look forward to demonstrating them at AQE,” he explains.

“Detachable tablets allow remote operation for safety and convenience, but our Series 4 (S4) instruments also have their own IP address, and are compatible with multiple communications methods, which means that users have secure access to their analysers at any time, from anywhere.”

In addition to the latest technologies, Signal’s stand will also feature some of the company’s gas sampling, handling and calibration equipment, much of which has been well-proven in the field and has not changed for years. “Our Gas Dividers are a good example of great design that has stood the test of time,” James explains. “They have been proven to be highly accurate, and can help reduce the cost and uncertainty that comes with multiple calibration bottles. This will be of interest to both AQE visitors and exhibitors.”

Signal Group experts will be available on the company’s AQE stand to discuss gas analysis issues such as sampling methods, sample treatment, analytical technologies, calibration and remote communications.

Summarising, James says: “Even those visitors that don’t currently need any gas analysis equipment should visit our stand - for the same reason that everyone should test-drive an electric car; everyone should come and play with our removeable tablets.”

AI and air quality.

The Seminar programme at this year’s Air Quality & Emissions show (AQE 2024 19-10 October 2025 Birmingham GB*) will feature a presentation on the use of AI in air quality by Airly co-founder and CEO Wiktor Warchałowski. The seminar, free to attend, will begin at 10:30am on the second day.

This seminar will be essential viewing for air quality professionals looking to better understand the role of automation and AI in their daily work. Wiktor will explain how a new AI tool can be exploited to dramatically improve the speed and efficiency of the initial, more mundane elements of air quality report generation. VOC Analysers for certification.

Signal Group has submitted both portable and fixed VOC analysers for MCERTS certification.

The 3010 MINIFID rugged, portable, heated FID VOC analyser has been designed to demonstrate compliance by hydrocarbon emissions measurements from multiple stacks or sites. The S4 SOLAR heated FID VOC analyser is a rack-mounted instrument for continuous monitoring, offering the accuracy and reliability that Signal customers expect, but with the additional benefits of a detachable tablet and software for RS232 or Ethernet connectivity.

The company’s stand (D11) at AQE 2022 will feature both instruments. Water, wastewater, air and environment technology event.

For many years the AQE (Air Quality & Emissions) and WWEM (Water Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring) events have been important dates in the diaries of anyone with an interest in environmental monitoring. In 2021 (13/14 Oct.) WWEM and AQE will both take place online, providing registered participants with free, exclusive access to both live and recorded presentations from the comfort and convenience of their own PC, tablet or smartphone.

A virtual exhibition booth is being provided by Alphasense at this year’s Air Quality and Emissions show, AQE 2021. Focus on hydrocarbon monitoring.

This year, the main focus of the Signal Group booth at AQE 2021, will be hydrocarbon monitoring because the 3010 MINIFID is currently undergoing MCERTS testing and a new portable Methane/Non-Methane FID analyser will be unveiled with a video explaining the clever design features that have been built into the new unit – the SOLAR Xplore.

“Many customers are not aware that we also manufacture a comprehensive range of accessories such as gas dividers for linearity and calibration checks, heated sample lines, sample pumps and filters, NOx converters, cooler dryers, zero air generators etc., so delegates can come to us for advice on almost any issue relating to gas monitoring," says Signal Group’s Stephane Canadas.

The virtual booth will also provide an opportunity to see a demonstration of Signal Group’s innovative Series 4 analysers with detachable wireless tablets.

Postponed environment event.

The international environmental monitoring events, WWEM and AQE were due to take place in November 2020, but given the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers have announced the postponement of both events until 25th and 26th May 2021. Both WWEM and AQE will again take place concurrently and in the same location – the Telford International Centre in England.

Both events include major conferences and technical seminars as well as international exhibitions featuring the world’s leading providers of testing, monitoring and analytical products and services. WWEM (Water Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring) and AQE (Air Quality & Emissions) address different aspects of environmental monitoring, but combined they offer anyone with a professional interest in the subject with a unique opportunity to learn about the latest regulations, Standards, methods and technologies.

“The decision to postpone was not taken lightly,” explains organiser Marcus Pattison. “We have been following government advice closely and were concerned that international travel may be problematic, and some form of social distancing may still exist in the latter part of this year. We therefore liaised with all stakeholders including conference speakers, exhibitors, and partners such as CIWEM, British Water, SWIG, WIPAC, RSC Interest Group, Future Water Association, CoGDEM and the STA.

“Following this consultation, it became clear that all parties would very much welcome an early decision to delay, so we set about finding dates that avoid Bank Holidays, Easter and school holidays. Happily, this was achieved and we are excited to have the extra time to make WWEM 2021 and AQE 2021 the best and biggest ever!”

Apart from the change of dates, the events will proceed as originally planned, albeit in compliance with government safety advice at the time. The technical program of conferences and seminars is still being formulated and the Calls for Papers will be extended.

Both the WWEM and AQE events attract international visitors from a broad spectrum of sectors including regulators, standards organisations, water and wastewater companies and providers, commercial laboratories, environmental consultants and contracting engineers, industrial process operators, local authority environmental health officers, test houses, analytical service providers, instrumentation and technology manufacturers, researchers and academia.

The websites for both events have been updated to reflect the new dates, and prospective speakers, presenters, exhibitors and visitors can visit these sites to learn more about the wealth of opportunities available.

Summarising, Marcus Pattison says: “The response to the postponement from all of our stakeholders has been extremely positive. People have understood that this has been a difficult decision to make, but they are grateful for the fact that it has given them plenty of time to amend their plans accordingly.

Vehicles emissions live at show!

Visitors to AQE 2018 in Telford (GB) will be able to view live emissions data from vehicles travelling on a road close to the Telford International Centre, where the event will take place (21-22nd Nov.) Ricardo plc, a global strategic engineering and environmental consultancy, will operate the monitoring equipment, providing a live feed into their AQE exhibition stand number No. 74.

“This is very exciting,” comments show organiser Marcus Pattison. “Vehicles are being blamed for urban air pollution, so this will be a great opportunity to see ‘real-world’ emissions rather than car manufacturers’ data. Entry to the AQE 2018 exhibition is free of charge to pre-registered visitors so whilst the event was created for air quality professionals, there is no reason why members of the public or local pressure groups should not also attend.”

Ricardo and its technology partner, OPUS RSE, use state of the art vehicle emission remote sensing equipment to accurately measure real-world driving emissions from large numbers of vehicles, under actual driving conditions, in a short space of time. The equipment is portable and will be configured to measure emissions of the pollutants of most interest, namely nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and ammonia.

The data gathered provides local insight necessary to inform the cost-effective design of low-emission policy and helps to ensure that mitigation measures focus only on the most polluting vehicle types.

The world’s leading manufacturers of air quality monitoring equipment will display the latest technologies at the event, and with registrations up by 21% AQE 2018 is set to be busier than ever. Substantial increase in registrations!

The organisers of AQE 2018, the Air Quality & Emissions event, have reported a 21% increase in registrations compared with the last AQE in May 2017.

“This is no surprise,” comments Exhibitions Manager David Hellyer. “Air quality has never been higher in the political agenda, and monitoring underpins all of the air quality improvement measures that are either underway or planned. Similarly, one of the AQE conferences will focus on the Medium Combustion Plant Directive, which will affect thousands of organisations, so in addition to more registrations from local authorities, we are also reserving places for a wide variety of industries and utilities.

“Additionally, AQE 2018 is benefitting from synergy with its co-located sister event WWEM 2018, for which registrations are also up – by 18%.”

Clean air zones.

The organisers of AQE 2018, the Air Quality & Emissions show, have announced a partnership with the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), for the hosting of a one-day seminar on 21st November focusing on the development of Clean Air Zones (CAZs).

“A significant part of the AQE event will address issues relating to ambient air quality,” says AQE Organiser Marcus Pattison. “In particular, there will be specific focus on air quality monitoring, which provides the baseline data that is essential for finding pollution hot-spots and measuring the effects of improvement measures such as Clean Air Zones.

“The EIC hosted seminar will therefore complement the other events at AQE 2018 and delegates will have the added benefit of being able to see almost all of the world’s leading manufacturers of air quality monitoring equipment at the AQE Exhibition.”

Michael Lunn, EIC‘s Director of Public Affairs said: "EIC is pleased to host this one day seminar in conjunction with AQE 2018. The seminar will explore the finer details of delivering Clean Air Zones and the challenges and opportunities that will result for business and the communities in which they are planned. The environment in Britain post Brexit!

Lord Whitty has been announced as the opening speaker of the Air Quality and Emissions Conference at AQE 2017 in Telford (GB). The two day event will start on Wednesday 24th May with Lord Whitty’s presentation covering ‘Environmental Protection Legislation in the Post-Brexit Era.'

“AQE 2017 was created to underpin the monitoring that makes environmental protection effective,” says organiser Marcus Pattison. “The UK’s decision to leave the European Union has created significant levels of uncertainty, so AQE attendees will be very interested to hear Lord Whitty’s views; not least because every other aspect of AQE 2017 is focused on the implementation of environmental protection regulations.”

Lord Whitty is Chair of Environmental Protection UK (EPUK), a national charity providing expert policy analysis and information on air quality. He is also a Labour peer sitting in the House of Lords since 21 October 1996, and has held the governmental positions of Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) (Food, Farming and Sustainable Energy) (2003 to 2005), and Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) (2001 to 2003). He has been a non-executive director of the Environment Agency (2006 – 2012) and has also served on parliamentary committees addressing issues such as environmental protection, climate change, science and technology.

Registration for AQE 2017 is now open, with free entry to the Exhibition and Workshops, and a small charge for attending the conferences. Registered attendees will also receive free parking, lunch and refreshments.

Clean air award instituted!

A new award has been created to highlight the importance of air quality monitoring stations (AQMSs), by recognising those that create and maintain the best sites.

Who'll be first?

A network of AQMSs spans Britain, providing data on the air that citizens breathe. These stations provide vitally important data to: track long term trends in air quality; inform national strategy and decision making on issues that affect air quality; identify pollution hotspots, and provide daily information for people with health conditions that make them susceptible to air pollution.

The ‘Golden (AQ) Site Award’ will be judged by a group of leading air quality professionals and presented every two years at the AQE Conference/Exhibition. AQE 2017 (Telford, GB, 24-25th May) organiser Marcus Pattison says: “There is already a ‘Golden Stack Award’ for the industrial site with the best monitoring installation, and this has encouraged healthy competition in the creation of safe, ergonomic monitoring sites, so it is logical to extend this into the ambient AQ monitoring sector, and we are excited to see which sites are nominated.”

Local Authorities and others will be encouraged to nominate their sites via a dedicated weblink and the winner will receive a trophy as well as a plaque for display at the winning site. Judging criteria will include safety, location, service vehicle parking, cleanliness/state of repair, power and internet availability. However, the judges may also take into account other issues such as nearby toilets and refreshments.

The competition is being sponsored by the company Air Monitors Limited, which is responsible for supplying and servicing many of the UK AQMSs. Their Jim Mills says: “We hope that this competition will help to highlight the importance of air quality monitoring whilst encouraging AQMS owners to think carefully about what it takes to create a safe, effective, sustainable monitoring resource.”

Industrial emissions to be addressed.

The first day of the AQE 2017 conference will address the monitoring of difficult gases and dust components in industrial emissions, with presentations from an international panel of experts. AQE 2017 will take pace in Telford  (GB) on 24-25 May 2017 and registration is now available on the site.

The conference will begin with a regulatory update on the Industrial Emissions Directive, with subsequent presentations on the challenge presented by the monitoring requirements for SO2, and the impact of new EN Standards on the acid gases HF and HCl, including an overview of the current status of test methods and instruments.

The advantages of direct gas measurements with a feedback process loop for Ammonia slip monitoring will be described, in addition to the challenges and possible solutions to the calibration and measurement of particulates at low concentrations.

The afternoon sessions will begin with a presentation on a technology which combines gravimetric PM measurement with real-time diffusion charging and current measurement for indoor, outdoor and combustion source measurement. Mercury monitoring and calibration will then be discussed by a number of speakers, including experiences from the United States in relation to the European CEN that is currently being developed.

The final speaker of the day will explain how gaseous and liquid fuels can be treated with fixed bed absorbents at ambient temperature to remove H2S and mercury, and how the absorption profile can be easily measured.

New products in gas & emissions products.

Quantitech will unveil a number of major new product initiatives at AQE 2017 (24/25 May 2017) that will be of great interest to anyone involved with gas analysis and emissions monitoring.

“Since the last AQE event, we have been acquired by Gasmet Technologies and invested in new resources so that we are now able to offer complete integrated continuous emissions monitoring systems,” says Managing Director Ken Roberts. “In addition, we will launch a new range of MCERTS approved FID analysers, offering fixed, portable and EX versions.

“Quantitech’s new integrated system capability is built around the Gasmet CEMS II e MCERTS approved FTIR multigas analyser, with options for additional measurements of oxygen, TOC, particulates, temperature, pressure and flow.”

The same MCERTS approved technology is employed in the Gasmet DX4000 portable heated FTIR analyser, and this will also feature on the Quantitech stand, in addition to the DX4040 FTIR ambient gas analyser.

Visitors to the Quantitech stand (62 & 63) will also be able to see MCERTS approved FID analysers, including the PT63 Portable FID, from SK Elektronik and, for the first time in Britain, new laser gas analysers for a wide range of process gas monitoring applications.

Programme for air quality event!

The programme for Day 2 of the AQE 2017, the international Air Quality and Emissions Show (Telford, GB, 24-25th May) has been published. Developed in partnership with IAPSC (Investigation of Air Pollution Standing Conference), there will be three sessions covering: pervasive air quality monitoring; vehicle emissions monitoring and data management; and local air quality management and policy.

“The High Court has instructed the UK Government to produce draft plans on how it will tackle air pollution, and these are likely to be published in April, so AQE 2017 is perfectly timed,” comments AQE organiser Marcus Pattison.

Speakers from academia, local authorities and industry will provide the latest information on technologies, air quality strategy, and best practice in traffic-related pollution issues.

Air quality is also affected by industrial emissions, so the first day of AQE 2017 will focus on industrial emissions monitoring - regulations, standards, methods and technologies, and the agenda for this day will be published shortly.

Visitors to AQE 2017 will also benefit from the opportunity to attend an Exhibition with more than 90 stands and over 50 free walk-in workshops, addressing a wide variety of monitoring themes including ambient air quality, stack emissions, process gas, occupational safety, fugitive emissions and boundary monitoring.

Paper call on air quality and industrial emissions.

AQE 2017, the international Air Quality and Emissions conference (Telford, UK, 24th & 25th May) has issued a call for Papers on emissions monitoring and ambient air quality monitoring.

Organiser Marcus Pattison says: “Air quality and its effects on both human health and climate change has been a politically hot topic for good reason lately, so AQE 2017 will provide a great opportunity for experts to share knowledge and learn about the latest developments.”

Anyone interested in presenting a Paper or a Poster should submit an abstract of up to 100 words via the website  by 20th January 2017.

The main themes of the conference will include international regulations, monitoring methods, technologies and standards relating to ambient air quality and industrial emissions. The industry sectors covered by the conference will include power, incineration, manufacturing and waste, as well as processes regulated by local authorities. The presentations will cover the monitoring of particulates and the main gas species including acid gases, ammonia, formaldehyde and trace species such as mercury.

The Conference will run alongside an Exhibition featuring almost all of the world’s leading suppliers of stack emissions and ambient monitoring equipment and services, including workplace, fugitive and discontinuous monitoring.
