New VOC emissions monitor approved.

Signal Group has announced the launch of SOLAR CEMNEX, a continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) system with MCERTS approval for the measurement of total organic carbon concentration in sample gas. Designed for regulatory compliance and process control, employing a reference method flame ionisation detector (FID), the new analyser will be ideal for monitoring a wide variety of applications. These include incinerators, medium and large combustion plants, VOC abatement equipment, packaging, and solvent using processes such as paint, print, textiles and adhesives.

The SOLAR CEMNEX is a self-contained monitoring system with a rack mounted VOC analyser, a heated filter, heated sample lines, and an automated calibration system.

“We have been developing and manufacturing FID analysers for over 50 years, and the SOLAR CEMNEX is our most advanced system yet,” explains Signal MD, James Clements. “Customers can order these analysers very simply via the website – they just need to answer four yes/no questions, such as whether they want a detachable tablet/screen, and that’s it – they can place an order and a brand-new SOLAR CEMNEX will be delivered ready for immediate deployment.”

Following a rigorous program of tests at TÜV in Germany, MCERTS approval verifies that the complete monitoring system complies with the performance and uncertainty requirements specified in Britain’s Environment Agency Guidance: MCERTS for stack emissions monitoring equipment at industrial installations - Continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) Updated 28 August 2024, EN 15267-1:2023, EN15267-2:2023, EN 15267-3:2007 and QAL 1 as defined in EN 14181: 2014.

Certification for the SOLAR CEMNEX covers the complete system, including the SOLAR FID analyser, Signal’s heated line and sample probes, and Signal’s 363 SM heated sample filter. Consequently, systems integrators can deploy these items with other MCERTS approved equipment for regulatory compliance monitoring.

The SOLAR CEMNEX can be supplied with a detachable tablet/screen, which allows users to operate the analyser from up to 50 metres away, via inbuilt 802.11 Wi-Fi. In addition, each unit has its own IP address, and is compatible with 3G, 4G, 5G, GPRS, Bluetooth and satellite communications. This provides users with simple and secure access to their analysers at any time, from anywhere.

Summarizing, James Clements says: “In recent years we have ramped up the development of our gas analysers to enhance their accuracy, simplicity and connectivity, so we are delighted to now add MCERTS approval for those customers with a regulatory requirement.”

The Flame Ionisation Detection (FID) method for monitoring emissions.

The Flame Ionisation Detection (FID) method was first developed in the 1950s for the laboratory analysis of organic chemicals. Later, when environmental regulations began to limit the emissions of volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the FID method was adapted for emissions monitoring. Signal Group was one of the first companies in the world to develop VOC emissions analysers, and in this article James Clements, Managing Director, explains why FID became the reference method, and why it lasted the test of time.

Background
Organic chemicals have always been widely used in industrial processes, but awareness of the harmful effects of VOCs on health and the environment did not become significant until the 1970s. At that time, President Richard Nixon presented proposals on environmental protection which included the establishment of a federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This led to the development of maximum allowable concentrations for pollutants, many of which were subsequently adopted around the world.

VOCs are common constituents in the emissions of processes that involve petrochemicals, paints, coatings, adhesives, waxes, disinfectants and cleaning chemicals. In many of these processes, solvents play a major role and the release of VOCs represents a risk to health and the environment. Similarly, combustion processes give rise to VOC emissions, particularly where combustion involves the use of an organic fuel. This includes fossil fuels such as petrol, diesel and oil, as well as wastes and biofuels.

By monitoring total organic carbon (TOC) concentration in emissions, process operators can demonstrate compliance with relevant legislation. However, such measurements also provide insights for process optimisation, because, for example, the presence of organic compounds may be an indicator of incomplete combustion. In addition, TOC is frequently measured post-abatement in order to measure abatement efficiency.

Why was FID chosen as the reference method for VOC emissions monitoring?
It is normal practice for regulators to specify a standard reference method for monitoring pollutants, so that compliance measurements are accurate and directly comparable with the limits, and with measurements from other process operators. FID has been widely acknowledged as the reference method for VOCs for over 50 years, and there are many reasons for this:

  1. Already proven - initially developed as a detection method for laboratory Gas Chromatographs, FID was already well-established as a reliable technology for the detection of hydrocarbons. Adaptation for measuring VOC emissions was therefore relatively straightforward. As a consequence, Signal Group has been developing and supplying thousands of FID analysers all over the world for almost as long as FID has been the reference method.
  2. Cost – in comparison with methods such as mass spectrometry (MS) or Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), FID is relatively simple and therefore less costly to manufacture. This is important because, globally, the number of processes that generate VOC emissions is enormous, so it is important that reference method technology is affordable for the organisations, large and small, that are required to monitor their hydrocarbon emissions, or that need to monitor for other purposes such as process control or abatement management.
  3. Specificity – the FID detection method is specifically designed to detect carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds, making it highly selective for organic compounds. Unlike some other detection methods, FID does not respond significantly to inorganic gases which helps to minimise interference from non-VOCs, providing more accurate and reliable emissions measurements.
  4. High sensitivity – the FID method is highly sensitive to hydrocarbons, which makes it ideal for even low-level measurements, particularly as environmental regulations become more stringent. Signal Group’s latest FIDs, for example, offer measurement resolution down to 0.01ppm. It is also important to note that FID sensitivity is much less variable than other techniques. Photoionisation detection (PID) for example exhibits widely varying response factors for individual hydrocarbons, rendering it inappropriate for the measurement of hydrocarbon mixtures. In contrast, FID is ideal for the measurement of total hydrocarbon content, whether the hydrocarbon is an individual compound or a mixture of species.
  5. Wide range – in addition to their high sensitivity, FIDs are also able to make measurements at significantly higher ranges. The S4 Solar FID (shown right) for example, has a number of user-selectable ranges, all the way from 0 to 1ppm with a resolution of 0.01ppm, up to 0 to 300,000 ppm with a resolution of 1ppm.
  6. Fast response - FID analysers provide an almost immediate response to a sample gas, which is extremely important for regulatory compliance, particularly with processes emissions that can vary significantly from one minute to the next. The typical response time for Signal’s latest FIDs can be less than 1 second. This is also important for process control and engine emissions testing.
  7. Stability and reproducibility - decades of experience in a wide variety of applications have shown FID’s ability to produce stable measurements in the long-term. Similarly, when identical FID units measure the same sample gas, the same results are given. This is an extremely important feature of standard reference methods because it provides confidence in measurements – for both the user and the regulator.
  8. Applicable to continuous monitoring – many VOC emissions regulations necessitate continuous monitoring, so an important feature of FIDs is their compatibility with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS). Nevertheless, FIDs should be sufficiently flexible to be suitable for discontinuous monitoring with portable instruments. Consequently, Signal Group developed lightweight ruggedised versions of its FID technology so that, where regulations permit, a single portable FID can be used to measure the VOC emissions of multiple sources – at the same site or at different sites.

FID development – manufacturer’s perspective.
Although the latest range of FIDs from Signal Group feature a fourth-generation detector, it is truly remarkable that the core measurement technology has changed very little since the company first developed a FID in the 1970s. The main reason for this is that each generation of Signal’s FID has featured the company’s unique precision-machined monobloc detector which guarantees uniformity of production in a compact, leak-free design.

Most of Signal’s FID development work has therefore focused on issues outside of the core technology. These issues have either been application specific, or have addressed ease of operation, connectivity and data management.

In addition to fixed and portable FIDs, the company has developed both hot and cold FIDs for ambient or post-combustion applications. Dual FIDs have also been developed, featuring two FIDs in one instrument, so that methane and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) can be monitored simultaneously. This is an important differentiation because methane’s primary significance is as a greenhouse gas (around 30 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide), whereas NMHCs contribute to the photochemical generation of smog and atmospheric ozone. So, methane emissions are important because of their role in climate change, whereas NMHC emissions affect air quality and health.

Their development work  has also focused on automation, datalogging, sample conditioning and advanced calibration tools. In addition, the most recent generation of instruments features a wireless tablet capable of connecting via Wi-Fi to the analyser from a distance of up to 50 metres. This provides users with the ability to view live data in a different location, and even manage datalogging, alarms and calibration from a distance.

In addition, all Series IV instruments, including the new SOLAR XPLORE (right), have their own IP address, and are compatible with 3G, 4G, 5G, GPRS, Bluetooth and satellite communications. This provides users with simple and secure access to their analysers at any time, from anywhere.

Conclusion.
In summary, Signal’s first FID analysers in the 1970s were able to provide accurate consistent measurements for total hydrocarbons. Now, thousands of instruments later, their successors are still producing the same reliable data, but with built-in tools and accessories that make the monitoring process easier and less prone to human error. Employing the standard reference method, supported by over 50 years of rigorous work in every conceivable application, FID has stood the test of time, offering operators and regulators confidence and trust in VOC measurements.

Continual power supply for critical infrastructure.

Reduce the possibility of unplanned outages and help prevent catastrophic transformer failures.

The recent power outage at London’s Heathrow airport resulted from a substation transformer fire, which highlights the importance of the early detection of problems in critically important infrastructure. As demand grows for continuous transformer monitoring, Vaisala has released a new enhanced version of its Optimus™ OPT100 DGA monitor by adding oxygen and nitrogen parameters.

A transformer’s lifetime is determined by the condition of its solid insulation, which can be detrimentally affected by air leaks. The easiest and most robust way to reliably detect such leaks is to continuously measure the Total Gas Pressure (TGP) of all dissolved gases in the transformer’s oil, where oxygen and nitrogen are the dominating components. TGP therefore provides real-time detection – even in the very early phases - of air leaks into a sealed power transformer’s tank. With the benefit of TGP, decision-makers in transformer maintenance learn whether the insulation system of a sealed transformer is exposed to air, which allows them to make informed decisions on actions such as oil degassing or sealing system repair.

The real-time monitoring of fault gases by dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is a well-known and established method for the early detection of quickly evolving faults. However, some processes develop slowly in transformers – oxidation for example, can affect their operational life, usually taking years to show significant effects. Vaisala has therefore developed its DGA monitors to track the key parameters and thereby automate effective transformer condition assessment.

In the past, oxygen measurement failed to detect slow air leaks when active oxidation processes were simultaneously consuming oxygen. However, slow air ingress can be easily detected with increasing TGP because nitrogen, as an inert gas, would not be consumed nor produced in the transformer. The latest version of the OPT100 is therefore able to combine the TGP value with oxygen measurement to determine whether oxygen consumption due to active oxidation is taking place.

With the benefit of TGP and oxygen monitoring data, it becomes possible to weigh the expected lifespan of the transformer against the costs of investigating and repairing the air leak or implementing mitigation measures. Therefore, traditional DGA of fault gases enhanced with TGP and oxygen measurement represents the ideal monitoring concept for the reliable protection of transformers.

Environmental monitoring system for pharmacies.

The construction of a new building prompted one of Denmark’s largest pharmacy businesses to invest in Vaisala’s viewLinc Continuous Monitoring System (CMS) to protect the production, handling and storage of medicines. Regionsapoteket Midtjylland produces and distributes pharmaceutical products, serving customers throughout the central Jutland region of Denmark, and the new monitoring system was installed at the new facility in Aarhus as well as the company’s site in Gødstrup near Herning (DK).

With GxP regulatory compliance as a key objective, the CMS was supplied, installed and commissioned by Insatech, Vaisala’s local distributor, and partner for Regionsapoteket Midtjylland.

Data reliability in GxP environments.
To meet the GxP regulatory requirements, the Vaisala viewLinc CMS was configured to monitor temperature, particles, humidity, and pressure, as well as alarms from water treatment systems, isolators, and safety cabinets in Regionsapoteket Midtjylland's medicine production, handling, and storage facilities. The system logs measurement data from the respective measurement points as well as the use of the monitoring system (including entry log, alarm handling, communication errors, instrumentation errors, etc.), ensuring an accurate representation of the production environment at any given time.

With viewLinc, Regionsapoteket can verify and prove to auditors that medications are produced, stored, and handled under the correct environmental conditions. Data integrity is ensured through an ‘Audit Trail’ function in the viewLinc software, which leaves a trace of all activities and prevents data from being edited or manipulated.

24/7 monitoring.
The viewLinc CMS enables Regionsapoteket Midtjylland to document production conditions around the clock. This is essential if there is any suspicion that a specific medication batch deviates from required storage and handling conditions. Therefore, viewLinc is a crucial factor in allowing Regionsapoteket to achieve data integrity and to guarantee the quality and safety of the medications that it produces.

With the viewLinc CMS, Insatech delivered a comprehensive monitoring solution consisting of data loggers and sensors strategically placed in cleanrooms, storage areas, laboratories, etc., either via lamp outlets or ventilation ducts. The system includes:
• 83 temperature measurement points in rooms, refrigerators, freezers, etc.
• 19 humidity measurement points in rooms and handling areas
• 19 particle counters, in production areas where personnel produce medicines. The limit is very low, and Insatech configured the system to activate lights and sounders in the rooms when alarm conditions are reached.
• 55 light towers that give an alarm if any limits are exceeded; indicating the criticality of the situation with a color scale.

Insatech also installed 105 differential pressure transmitters in 13 industrial panels (approximately 210 measurements). These measurements indicate the differential pressure between two rooms, where an alarm is activated in viewLinc if the pressure thresholds are breached. For example, if production room air pressure becomes lower than that in the distribution corridor, contamination of the production environment may occur. Monitoring the differential pressure in these areas helps to ensure against this.

Data collection and reporting.
Data from viewLinc’s distributed network of sensors is collected in the system’s server and presented in a user-friendly interface where it is also possible to print reports. The system logs data every minute, and if one or more parameters exceeds the allowed limit, the staff receive visual, acoustic, and SMS/email alarm notifications, allowing them to stop the batch immediately in critical productions. This ensures that the medicines are processed and stored within specified conditions.

In case of communication errors between the sensing instruments and viewLinc, data is stored locally in each device. Data storage capacity depends on the device logging interval, which is set up using viewLinc. Local memory in each device provides the data redundancy and integrity that is crucial for Regionsapoteket’s quality assurance and regulatory compliance.

Progress and successful installation.
Throughout the installation process, Insatech provided advice, project support, quality control, network installation, and data integration – all crucial to the success of the monitoring system. Insatech also enabled collaboration with Regionsapoteket’s partners to guarantee successful installation and commissioning.

Following the successful completion of the project, Regionsapoteket Midtjylland issued the following statement: "We have been very pleased with our close collaboration with Insatech. The project manager has been a good collaborator and sparring partner. He has focused on being solution-oriented and helped us find the right solution when challenges arose."

Water quality monitoring blueprint.

A continuous water quality monitoring project has recently been completed on the River Kent near Kendal, in the England's Lake District. The monitoring was implemented for United Utilities (Water Company for North West England) by the environmental consultancy APEM, with Meteor Communications responsible for instrumentation installation and calibration, as well as real-time web-based data provision, event visualisation and reporting.

“Monitoring was required to help protect water quality during the operation of a temporary outfall pipe,” explains Joe Allaby, APEM’s Principal Aquatic Scientist. “The monitoring programme was a complete success, and I believe that water companies will be interested in this project because it represents a blueprint for the requirements of Section 82 of the Environment Act 2021.

Atlantic Salmon
“Multiparameter water quality monitors were installed upstream and downstream of a temporary discharge from United Utilities’ wastewater treatment works in Kendal to ensure that it did not negatively impact the water quality of the River Kent.

“Each monitor measured the key water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, conductivity, turbidity and ammonium. In this project, we were also required to measure un-ionised ammonia, because of its potential effects on sensitive migratory fish species such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and sea trout (Salmo trutta).”

Passing through the Lake District National Park, the River Kent flows for around 20 miles into Morecombe Bay. The River Kent is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In the section of the river, the project monitored two protected species: bullhead (Cottus gobio) and white clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes).

Kendal WwTW outfall.
Kendal WwTW outfall
As the main treatment facility for the Kendal area, the WwTW services a large residential and tourist population equivalent of around 90,000, discharging to the River Kent. Prior to December 2015, the effluent outfall pipe from the plant passed under the river adjacent to the WwTW and discharged approximately 1.3 km downstream, but this pipe was destroyed by the flooding that followed Storm Desmond in 2015. United Utilities therefore constructed a temporary outfall structure to maintain the ongoing operation of the works.

The temporary outfall was located much closer to the works, in an impounded reach upstream of a weir, where flow rates were lower. Consequently, the Environment Agency required as a condition of the permit for the temporary outfall, that United Utilities carry out upstream and downstream continuous water quality monitoring.

The environmental consultancy APEM was tasked with the monitoring and protection of the River Kent at Kendal whilst the temporary discharge was in operation. “At first, this mainly involved ecological investigations to check the health of the river,” explains APEM's Joe Allaby. “However, in 2022, continuous multiparameter water quality monitoring systems were installed to provide access to continuous data 24/7. This included an upstream monitor, and two downstream monitors; one in slack water and the other in turbulent water, to give us a complete picture of any potential water quality effects from the temporary discharge.”

‘Water quality as a service.’
APEM’s expertise was employed in the identification of suitable monitoring sites, and Meteor Communications was contracted to install and maintain the monitoring stations under a ‘water quality as a service’ (WQaaS) contract. Joe says: “It would have been possible to purchase the monitoring equipment, but WQaaS is ideal for temporary contracts, because Meteor is then responsible for maintaining the equipment.”

Under a WQaaS contract, Meteor Communications installs the monitors and then visits the site every 4 to 6 weeks to swap in pre-calibrated sondes. Meteor’s monitoring stations, known as ESNETs (environmental sensor networks), are fully equipped with solar panels and remote communications technology, so that collected data can be automatically transferred to the MeteorCloud® platform, which provides secure data visualisation, analysis and alarms.

ESNET systems are available in kiosk or portable formats, and sondes can be located in-river or within flow-through chambers measuring water which is pumped from the river. The Kendal sondes were located in the river, fixed securely to local infrastructure. Continuous water quality monitoring data are stored in the sondes and transferred every 30 minutes to the MeteorCloud web portal, providing APEM, United Utilities and the Environment Agency with real-time access to water quality data.

Continuous water quality monitoring enables the detection of water quality incidents as well as the detection of trends. “In the past, our consultants have used portable instruments, but we are increasingly being asked for continuous data,” explains APEM’s Jack Hambridge. “So, our partnership with Meteor Communications has worked very well, delivering accurate, reliable data for us and our clients.

“In addition to the quality of the instruments, what really sets Meteor apart is their calibration service. They have invested in a bespoke calibration laboratory and a team of field engineers, capable of servicing large numbers of sondes so that data are accurate and the ESNET systems are maintained in optimal condition.”

Proactive maintenance.
Meteor Communications was responsible for maintaining the condition of the monitoring equipment, and checking the validity of the data to ensure a continuous dataset was provided for almost 2 years. In addition, APEM checked the readings three times per day, every day, as part of its proactive maintenance service, which, if measurements exceed pre-set values, could also include mitigation measures such as aeration and fish rescue.

With the benefit of Meteor’s monitoring systems, APEM also provided United Utilities with weekly water quality reports, and incident notices with visual checks when any of the pre-set measurement values were breached. “This was important for all stakeholders,” explains Joe Allaby. “Continuous monitoring with real-time access to data meant that the water utility, the regulator and local residents could all rest assured that river water quality was being maintained, and that a rapid response would be available if an alert was issued.”

Meteor Communications MD Matt Dibbs says: “This project exemplifies everything that a water utility would need to comply with Section 82 of the Environment Act, and with over 700 ESNET systems already installed across the UK, we have the scale of operations to help utilities comply with their obligations.

“In applications such as this, it is great to see consultants using their expertise to leverage the value of continuous water quality data. I should mention however, that our water quality monitors are being used in many different water quality monitoring applications beyond storm overflows. For example, ESNETs are also used for final effluent monitoring and catchment surveys, as well as short-term investigations and research projects.”

Results.
With almost two years of continuous monitoring upstream and downstream of the temporary discharge at Kendal, the data demonstrated that there were no significant detrimental effects on water quality. “We did detect occasional breaches of the values that we set as early warning levels for response,” explains Joe Allaby. “However, these were usually found to be due to sediment, or due to a dissolved oxygen dip during warm periods in the summer.

“For us, the continuous dataset was essential because it gave us peace of mind when things were going well, and provided an early alert when conditions changed, and a rapid response was necessary.”

It underscores our goal to deliver high quality and secure solutions for the energy and industrial sector. I would like to thank our dedicated team for their hard work and contribution to this milestone”.

Difference between ISO 27001 and SOC 2 The ISO 27001 certification is different from the SOC 2 attestation, which is a common security framework in the US market. While both frameworks aim to ensure data security, they have slightly different scopes and approaches.

The ISO 27001 certification covers the entire ISMS of an organization, while the SOC 2 attestation focuses on specific security controls relevant to the services provided by an organization. The ISO 27001 certification is more rigorous and comprehensive, as it requires an organization to implement and maintain an ISMS that meets the universal standards for every industry and geographic location. The SOC 2 attestation is more flexible and tailored, as it allows an organization to choose the security controls that suit its individual industry standards and needs. Both frameworks are valuable and respected in the market, but the ISO 27001 certification is more widely recognized and accepted internationally.

Drug manufacturing and storage protection.

The quality of manufactured or processed products at cleanroom facilities are protected by applicable good manufacturing practices (GMP) that specify stringent environmental monitoring requirements. The Swedish drug manufacturer APL (Apotek Produktion & Laboratorier) recently installed Vaisala’s viewLinc Continuous Monitoring system at its manufacturing plant, and has been delighted with the reliability and peace of mind that the system delivers.
Moustapha Ismail was employed by APL as an external consultant in the qualification and replacement of an older monitoring system at the site. He says: “The previous monitors had been in place for around fifteen years, so we took this as an opportunity to evaluate the latest technology on the market before making any decisions.”

With more than 500 employees and five manufacturing units in Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Umeå (S), APL is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of extemporaneous drugs and stock preparations, as well as a contract manufacturer in the life sciences sector.

One of the key requirements for the new monitoring system was ease of use, because this was regarded as a weakness in the existing system. “Naturally, we were looking for monitors that could offer the highest levels of uptime and reliability, but conscious of the benefits of smart technology, we were keen to take advantage of the latest developments,” Moustapha explains. “Members of the team had previously used Vaisala sensors, so we were already aware of their accuracy and long-term reliability, so Vaisala was invited, along with others, to quote for our user requirement specifications.”

To demonstrate viewLinc’s capabilities, Vaisala staff ran a virtual demonstration of the system in operation at Vaisala’s manufacturing facility in Helsinki (FIN). “This provided an opportunity for the APL team to learn how easy it would be to setup a viewLinc system using Vaisala’s VaiNet wireless temperature and humidity loggers,” explains Vaisala Sales Manager Janne Halonen.

The VaiNet data loggers use low frequency communications to provide long-range signal strength without the need for amplifiers, even in locations with obstacles such as metal or concrete structures. The low frequency also means that it does not interfere with other network traffic. If necessary, it is also possible to connect data loggers, transmitters, or other devices to the viewLinc system using Ethernet, PoE and USB connections.

The VaiNet AP10 network access points transfer data from the data loggers to the viewLinc Enterprise Server, and both the access point and the software verify that data have been received correctly. Data are then stored in viewLinc's secure database to protect data integrity and security. Data redundancy is achieved through load distribution between different VaiNet access points, which share multiple in-range loggers. The onboard memory of each logger, and viewLinc’s database, complete the audit trail.

The probes in the data loggers use Vaisala HUMICAP® humidity technology and platinum RTD sensors to provide best-in-class levels of measurement stability. HUMICAP® sensors employ a capacitive thin-film polymer technology that is resistant to contamination by dust and condensation.

Following the viewLinc demonstration, and after a full evaluation of reference customers and Vaisala’s technical and pricing proposal, APL selected the viewLinc Continuous Monitoring System, which was installed in 2022. The system comprises over sixty VaiNet wireless RFL100 temperature & humidity data loggers, supported by multiple VaiNet AP10 wireless access points. While the data loggers are equipped with sensors designed for long-term stability, they must be calibrated to maintain accuracy and compliance. Vaisala offers a yearly calibration service, however APL chose instead to use Vaisala’s training and tools to manage calibrations in-house.

Summarising, Moustapha says: “From an operational perspective, we have been delighted with the ease of use of the system, and we have built a high level of trust in viewLinc. Our team can log in and view readings at any time of day or night, and we know that the VaiNet loggers are accurate and reliable, so we can rest assured that the system will protect our vital indoor facilities and issue an alarm if any monitoring point approaches a threshold value.”

Dust pulse technology control systems.

System provides superior monitoring, optimizing dust collector system performance and increasing uptime

Emerson’s new ASCOTM DPT Control System optimizes the performance and improves the efficiency of filtration and dust collector systems by providing accurate and reliable low-level particulate monitoring, early warning leak detection, enhanced cleaning control and real-time diagnostics. The connected system serves as a cost-effective, scalable and purposeful step toward a facility’s digital transformation. It is now available in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle East and Africa regions, with availability in the Americas by mid-2023.

Using traditional sensing technology, low-level leakage is hard to detect in environments with high operating pressure, high humidity or oil and steam. The advanced signal processing of the DPT Control System helps ensure accurate, low-level measurement and detection of particles of less than 1 milligram per cubic meter in harsh, high-pressure (maximum 7 bar) and high-humidity applications, like those found in the cement, power plant, incineration, finishing aluminum and chemical industries.

“The digital transformation of the process industry is underway and connected facilities around the world are seeing the valuable sustainability and operation cost reducing benefits that real-time monitoring and diagnostics deliver,” said Stephan Cocciardi, director of marketing and global strategic accounts with Emerson’s discrete and industrial business. “The sophisticated monitoring capabilities of the ASCO DPT Control System can help facilities detect issues and prevent problems that would otherwise waste energy and accrue unplanned downtime, resulting in a more efficient and reliable dust collection system.”

By closely monitoring dust collector systems in real time, the DPT Control System can help users locate and address leaks before they become issues, improving energy efficiency and compressed air consumption savings. The loop-powered sensor enables intrinsically safe monitoring of difficult-to-access points of the filtration system, including coil, diaphragm and filter bag. The system’s condition monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities can improve system reliability and efficiency while reducing maintenance costs and unplanned downtime. Its superior linear output can help users track real-time particle emissions levels and meet emissions regulations.

In addition to monitoring, the DPT Control System optimizes the performance and uptime of dust collector systems of all sizes through efficient and reliable pulse-jet filter cleaning control. For facilities that use large baghouses, application-specific control algorithms can reduce pulsing frequency, which can extend filter life and reduce the amount of compressed air consumed. The control logic can maintain quite low and stable differential pressure during operation and automatically maintains differential pressure within ±25 Pa (±0.1 inch) of water column of set point while minimizing pulsing. This ensures consistent cleaning performance, maintains a proper filter cake and can reduce compressed air use by 15% to 40% over standard, on-demand cleaning and up to 90% over continuous. It also helps ensure consistent airflow to maintain production, ventilation and dust recovery.

The system provides extensive general filter pulse jet cleaning control modes, such as easily selectable pulsing patterns and a full range of basic timing modes. Modes include continuous, high/low, single cycle and cycle down.

The complete DPT Control System solution includes the DPT P150 Particle Monitor, DPT P151 Controller and P152 DPT Particle Sensor.
