Electric dump valves meet environmental standards.

Emerson recently partnered with Laramie Energy to help the Colorado-based oil and gas producer comply with state and federal emissions regulations. Using ASCOTM zero-emissions electric dump valves, the only such all-electric solution for separators, scrubbers, and compression units, the company helped Laramie Energy achieve compliance by eliminating both vented and fugitive emissions from the liquid dump stage of their separation process.*

Conventional dump valves are often piloted by well gas, which can leak into the atmosphere as vented and fugitive emissions. Some states, including Colorado, have emissions regulations that include fines for noncompliance, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a waste emissions charge for methane emissions that exceed specified thresholds.

If fugitive emissions are detected, the EPA requires oil and gas producers to report their greenhouse gas data and conduct tests, surveys and repairs. Companies that fall out of regulation must pay expensive fines and waste subsequent downtime to reestablish compliance.

In comparison, ASCO zero-emission electric dump valves use ultra-low-power electric actuation, which removes the need to vent well gas in upstream applications. And, unlike traditional dump valves, they are fugitive-emissions-free by design because they have no valve packing.

With precise control, ASCO electric dump valves actuate in 50 to 75 milliseconds compared to conventional valves that take several seconds, thus virtually eliminating any chance of gas blowby. This helped Laramie Energy better maintain the static pressure of their vessels which ultimately led to an increase in natural gas production. The valves also use 1.2 watts (W) of energy compared to a conventional electric retrofit kit that uses 96 W, reducing valve power usage by 98.75%.

“Though initially designed for legacy well sites, these fully electric dump valves can help oil and gas companies achieve compliance and avoid red tape on both newly drilled production sites and existing production sites to meet new standards,” said Michael Land, sales development manager with Emerson’s discrete automation business. “Our solution provides a cost-effective, maintenance-free alternative to meet compliance when compared to other solutions like instrument air, nitrogen and electric retrofit kits.”

Laramie Energy focuses on developing unconventional oil and gas reserves within the Rocky Mountains (North America), operating roughly 1,500 wells. The company installed ASCO electric dump valves in newly drilled wells while updating its legacy wells with the solution. Beyond ensuring compliance, the valves have provided additional benefits, including less maintenance and greater well efficiency.

Integrated manifold for respiratory therapy devices.

The ASCO Series 588 manifold reduces manufacturer engineering and assembly time, improves energy efficiency, product lifespan and reliability of devices.

The ASCO™ Series 588 Stationary Oxygen Concentrator Manifold has been announced by Emerson. This is the healthcare industry’s first turnkey manifold solution designed to optimize respiratory therapy device designs and accelerate product speed to market. Oxygen concentrators must quickly reach patients who rely on them, so it’s critical that they are readily available and operate reliably. The Series 588 manifold is specially designed to simplify device engineering and assembly and improve device energy efficiency, lifespan and reliability.

Without an integrated manifold, manufacturers must mount valves individually into the fluidic path of oxygen concentrators and attach dedicated tubing to each orifice. Alternatively, the small, lightweight architecture of the Series 588 manifold easily integrates into the fluidic path of oxygen concentrators, significantly reducing engineering and assembly time for medical equipment manufacturers. The Series 588 features two robust general service valves that precisely control the flow of air between the compressor and the sieves. The manifold fastens easily into the fluidic path, and a barbed port design makes it simple to connect tubing.

“Oxygen concentrators are essential to the health and well-being of patients with chronic respiratory disorders, so it is critical they are readily available for therapy. However, one of the most important aspects of these devices is an intelligently designed fluidic path, and that takes time,” said Thomas Beck, product marketing manager for analytical and medical at Emerson. “With the ASCO Series 588 Manifold, our fluidic path experts have designed a low-power, robust solution that can save medical manufacturers time and lifetime costs. Manufacturers can quickly and simply install the integrated manifold by connecting just a few tubes.”

In addition to simplifying design and assembly, the Series 588 can help improve device energy efficiency and reliability while lengthening product life. The manifold’s compact footprint can enable smaller device designs without sacrificing performance. The valves’ low power demand can extend device battery life and time between charges, which can set a manufacturer’s product apart from competitor offerings. And the high reliability of the valves can lengthen the overall lifespan of the oxygen concentrator and minimize manufacturer lifetime costs.

Filter Regulators allow manufacturers to single-source complete valve piloting solutions.

The new ASCO™ Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators, which maximise process efficiency and reduce unplanned downtime in a broad range of process applications, have been announced by Emerson. This line of durable, aluminum filter regulators can handle the highest flow rates of any regulators in their class and provides precise pressure regulation to downstream instruments.

An alternative to stainless steel filter regulators, ASCO Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators complete Emerson’s full suite of valve piloting technologies. This allows process manufacturers to source their total valve piloting solutions, including solenoid valves, switch boxes, filter regulators and accessories, from one global technology partner.

By using one supplier, manufacturers can simplify their supply chains, improve design accuracy and access comprehensive engineering support. Designing a valve piloting solution that includes technologies from different suppliers splits vendor responsibility and can introduce an opportunity for error.

“Sourcing valve piloting technology from multiple vendors is time-consuming and complicates supply chains, while limited options for conventional filter regulators leave some customers with unmet needs,” said Mike Howells, marketing manager, process applications for Europe, Middle East & Africa at Emerson. “Our new ASCO Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators simplify sourcing for our customers and ensures that they have industry-leading technology that enhances process efficiency, safety and reliability.”

With the market’s highest flow rate capabilities of up to 370.8 standard cubic feet per minute (10,500 liters per minute), the aluminum filter regulators improve process efficiency and ensure that stringent process valve opening/closing requirements like those for emergency shutdown valves are met. Higher flow rates provide more air to the valve actuator, which increases the opening and closing speed of process valves. Depending on the application, slow valve closures can increase safety risks.

These robust filter regulators feature rugged construction and advanced engineering that further enhance safety and maintain plant uptime, while specialized powder coating ensures reliable operation in harsh, corrosive process environments. Effective moisture removal keeps media dry to protect downstream devices, and sophisticated media filtration prevents downstream process contamination.

This three-tiered regulator line provides a .25-inch to 1-inch coverage and is highly customizable. Process manufacturers can choose advanced features such as Quick Relief, which enhances safety and operational certainty by exhausting downstream pressure if supply air pressure is lost, as well as low-temperature and low-copper variants, manual and automatic draining, global certifications, and many other options that serve specific applications, in the chemical, oil and gas, energy and utilities, food and beverage, and water and wastewater industries.

Dust pulse technology control systems.

System provides superior monitoring, optimizing dust collector system performance and increasing uptime

Emerson’s new ASCOTM DPT Control System optimizes the performance and improves the efficiency of filtration and dust collector systems by providing accurate and reliable low-level particulate monitoring, early warning leak detection, enhanced cleaning control and real-time diagnostics. The connected system serves as a cost-effective, scalable and purposeful step toward a facility’s digital transformation. It is now available in Asia-Pacific, Europe and Middle East and Africa regions, with availability in the Americas by mid-2023.

Using traditional sensing technology, low-level leakage is hard to detect in environments with high operating pressure, high humidity or oil and steam. The advanced signal processing of the DPT Control System helps ensure accurate, low-level measurement and detection of particles of less than 1 milligram per cubic meter in harsh, high-pressure (maximum 7 bar) and high-humidity applications, like those found in the cement, power plant, incineration, finishing aluminum and chemical industries.

“The digital transformation of the process industry is underway and connected facilities around the world are seeing the valuable sustainability and operation cost reducing benefits that real-time monitoring and diagnostics deliver,” said Stephan Cocciardi, director of marketing and global strategic accounts with Emerson’s discrete and industrial business. “The sophisticated monitoring capabilities of the ASCO DPT Control System can help facilities detect issues and prevent problems that would otherwise waste energy and accrue unplanned downtime, resulting in a more efficient and reliable dust collection system.”

By closely monitoring dust collector systems in real time, the DPT Control System can help users locate and address leaks before they become issues, improving energy efficiency and compressed air consumption savings. The loop-powered sensor enables intrinsically safe monitoring of difficult-to-access points of the filtration system, including coil, diaphragm and filter bag. The system’s condition monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities can improve system reliability and efficiency while reducing maintenance costs and unplanned downtime. Its superior linear output can help users track real-time particle emissions levels and meet emissions regulations.

In addition to monitoring, the DPT Control System optimizes the performance and uptime of dust collector systems of all sizes through efficient and reliable pulse-jet filter cleaning control. For facilities that use large baghouses, application-specific control algorithms can reduce pulsing frequency, which can extend filter life and reduce the amount of compressed air consumed. The control logic can maintain quite low and stable differential pressure during operation and automatically maintains differential pressure within ±25 Pa (±0.1 inch) of water column of set point while minimizing pulsing. This ensures consistent cleaning performance, maintains a proper filter cake and can reduce compressed air use by 15% to 40% over standard, on-demand cleaning and up to 90% over continuous. It also helps ensure consistent airflow to maintain production, ventilation and dust recovery.

The system provides extensive general filter pulse jet cleaning control modes, such as easily selectable pulsing patterns and a full range of basic timing modes. Modes include continuous, high/low, single cycle and cycle down.

The complete DPT Control System solution includes the DPT P150 Particle Monitor, DPT P151 Controller and P152 DPT Particle Sensor.

Operational certainty in emergency shutdowns.

The ASCO™ 141 Series Advanced Redundant Control System (ARCS), from Emerson,  provides a redundant solution for a variety of emergency shutdown valve applications, such as those found in the chemical, power, oil and gas industries. Available globally, it includes various redundant solenoid configurations to enhance the reliability of the process and meet specific safety or reliability requirements in automation processes. The single inlet/single outlet design provides a streamlined installation process compared to traditional bypass systems, while almost eliminating potential failure points.

The system is designed for use as a component in safety instrumented systems. Utilizing 1oo2, 2oo2 or 2oo3 voting solenoids to enhance the reliability of the circuit, it functions as a redundant pneumatics tripping device to control the pilot air signal to a process valve actuator. The ARCS features either two or four electrically actuated solenoid valves, visual indicators and a manually controlled bypass or isolation valve. The unique control functionality allows for maintenance of the solenoid valves without having to shut down the process valve. In fact, the use of the maintenance bypass or isolation valve is not required for functional testing of the ARCS unit — a downtime-reducing feature not possible with common bypass functions.

“By addressing the concerns common with typical bypass systems — particularly those in critical or emergency shutdown applications — our ASCO 141 series ARCS provides a reliable, time-saving alternative,” said vice president of global marketing for Emerson’s industrial automation business, Erik VanLaningham. “Although the use of a common bypass is a typical solution, the end-user doesn’t know if they’ll be able to shut down on demand in the event of an emergency because their redundant system is in bypass mode. This is where our unique ARCS value proposition comes in. The ARCS individual valve isolation option provides increased safety and operational availability during online maintenance to help customers achieve their required SIL rating.”

With just a single part number, the ASCO 141 series ARCS features several advances that simplify specification, installation and operation. Supplied as a fully integrated, comprehensive solution using a manifold instead of individual valves, ARCS comes pre-tested from the factory and ready to install. The direct valve-to-valve design eliminates pipework and fittings between the solenoid valves and minimizes leak points for increased reliability and a lower total cost of ownership. A status indicator with feedback helps facilitate preventive maintenance while providing online fault detection. It provides digital input feedback (via pressure switches or Emerson-exclusive GO Switch options) to the control room. And for additional peace of mind, the ASCO™ 327 series 3/2-way direct acting solenoid valves included on the ARCS manifold are certified to SIL 3 capable (exida) standards.

A direct-acting platform with advanced diagnostic capability and online maintenance features, ARCS is suitable for a wide variety of valve piloting applications to meet both safety and operational availability requirements.

Zoned Safety Valve Island.

The ability to integrate multiple safety zones within a single ASCO Numatics™ Series 503 valve island has been introduced. This enables the creation of up to three independent electro-pneumatic safety zones, while also allowing independent non-safe sections to co-exist within one valve island assembly. Alternative solutions enable the isolation of one zone only per island. The zoned safety approach helps the design engineer satisfy the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and comply with ISO 13849-1 while eliminating the components and complexity commonly found in existing safety circuits.
“With this functionality, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and end user can easily and cost-effectively configure up to three safety circuits in a machine using a single ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island with G3 fieldbus electronics,” said Scott Weickel, Vice President of Engineering for Machine Automation applications at Emerson. “Our simple, user-friendly zoned safety approach reduces components, saves space and improves design flexibility.”

The ASCO Numatics zoned safety valve island ensures the operator does not have to shut down the entire machine by releasing compressed air with a redundant safety/control dump valve. Instead, the valve island can be configured to shut down pilot air and power only to the group of valves that controls the machine’s motion in the operator’s vicinity.

“Because zoned safety capability is designed into the standard ASCO Numatics Series 503 valve island platform, no redesign is required and the user has optimal choices when selecting valve options, accessories, and flow requirements,” said Weickel. “The flexible approach also significantly reduces safety system cost and enables valuable machine space to be saved for other purposes.”

• The ASCO Numatics zoned safety valve island has been evaluated by TÜV Rheinland (Report No. 968/FSP 1228.00/16) and is compatible with category 3 PLd.

Valves comply fully with forthcoming regulations for marine industry.

Emerson has gained DNV-GL approval for its ASCO 551 and 553 series solenoid valves. This means that the valves comply with the soon-to-be-introduced (September 2017) worldwide regulations for ballast water treatment. From this date, all valves used for treating and managing ballast water aboard ships must comply with the new standard.

ASCO DNV-GL approved solenoid valves are available with aluminium and stainless steel valve bodies and with many solenoid options. This enables them to be used in safe areas and Ex zones. The 551 and 553 Series are certified for use in functional safety loops such as may be found on LNG vessels and tankers. This broad range of applications makes it easier to standardise on one solenoid valve, simplifying on-board maintenance. Emerson is the only supplier of their type to offer valves which are both DNV-GL and SIL approved.

DNV-GL approval combines two standards: DNV (Det Norske Veritas) and GL (Germanischer Lloyds). It is a global standard which means there is no need to purchase different solenoid valves depending on where the treatment plant or ship is being constructed. The introduction of the new standard is set to have a major impact on the ballast water industry. In total, around 70,000 boats worldwide will be affected by the new regulation, with 2000 more being built each year.

Volume booster used in control & on/off applications plus...!

Unique features enable improved reliability and easier maintenance and commissioning.

ASCO 330 Series volume booster from Emerson can be used in control and on/off applications, and where partial stroke testing is required

This volume booster enables faster process valve opening and closing speeds. The booster can be used in both on/off and control applications and where Partial Stroke Testing (PST) is required. Ideally suited for use in the upstream and downstream oil and gas market, the valve is flexible, robust and highly reliable. Available in stainless steel and aluminium, the booster complements other actuator control products from Emerson. These include switch boxes, solenoid valves, filter regulators and positioners.

Initially launched in ½” and 1” sizes, the 3/3 volume booster has been designed to simplify installation and maintenance tasks. The NAMUR pad mount for the solenoid valve makes the assembly compact and increases response speed. A unique connection option enables the valve to be removed from line without disturbing the pipework, simplifying maintenance and improving mean time to repair (MTTR). A modular inlet filter means that it is not necessary to have a high flow filter regulator upstream of the valve. A compact filter regulator upstream of the solenoid valve is normally sufficient.

The combination of material options, certification and the fact that the booster can be used for on/off or control simplifies engineering, selection and spares holdings. The ASCO booster is SIL3 capable and has a wide range of certification, including ATEX and CUTR. Furthermore, the valve has been designed for use in temperatures from -60°C to +90°C, ensuring compatibility with environments ranging from the Arctic to the desert.

Special solutions for analytical and medical applications

The ASCO range of valves in line with the exacting requirements of the medical and analytical sectors and suitable for these industries include a broad portfolio of miniature solenoid valve products, including isolation valves – where the fluid is isolated from the mechanical parts of the valve, proportional valves and complete customised solutions.

In excess of 80% of ASCO’s miniature solenoid valves sold into the medical and analytical sectors are customised. All of these ‘specials’ are created based on years of knowledge accumulation relating to the specialist demands of these industries. For the medical technology market, this might concern the supply of custom valves for use in dialysis machines, anaesthesia machines, ventilator systems (Emergency/ Home care and Hospital) or air mattresses for “pressure relieving” hospital beds. While bespoke valves for analytical technology applications could involve machines that analyse blood or gas samples, for instance.

Producing a special valve means taking different parts (standard or special) in order to meet perfectly the customer requirement. Customising a valve means to offer a valve with special body, electrical connection or special technical characteristics (pressure, flow…) ASCO can recount numerous recent requests for specials, such as special plastic injection blocks with several valves incorporating pressure sensors, fittings and filters.

In short, ASCO can custom-engineer just about any valve; whether the requirement is for a complex manifold interface assembly or simply a choice of solenoid valve terminations. To provide complete peace of mind, the company manufactures under clean room conditions, and tests every assembly before shipment. One part number is provided for one function (assembled and tested).

ASCO’s knowledge of the medical and analytical sectors ensure it is able to meet the high requirements for accuracy, reliability and purity demanded in these specialist fields. In addition, extensive international safety accreditations and certifications are applied to ensure the quality and safety of special products and their suitability for applications in various regions of the world.

With regard to analytical technology, special valves must not only exhibit precision and functionality, but be resistant to aggressive fluids and gases. Further requirements include a low internal volume and an easy-to-flush design, while valves with low power consumption will reduce heat transfer into the fluid. Typical applications include systems for chromatography, haematology, immunology, cytology, DNA synthesis, emissions analysis, water analysis and leak measurement.

Concerning special valves for medical technologies, the clear emphasis is on patient safety. Here, valves come partly into direct contact with fluids introduced into, or taken from patients, be it in handling medical gases in respirators, or liquids in dialysis. This field of application requires the use of inert materials, a low internal volume and low power consumption, as well as easy-to-flush internal valve or system cavities. Typical applications include equipment and devices for artificial respiration, anaesthesia, oxygen concentration, dialysis, dentistry, clinical sterilisation, minimally invasive surgery, cryosurgery and cellulitis treatment (massage).

Recent examples of ASCO expertise in special solutions include fluid isolation valves with a diaphragm mechanism for chemical analysis. Here, six solenoid-operated diaphragm valves were assembled in a star-like configuration on a manifold. In a similar application, this time for a bioanalytical system, Fluid isolation solenoid valves with low internal volume were mounted on a PMMA (acrylic) manifold. Another application with a PMMA manifold saw a rocker type fluid isolation valve with a power saving circuit board used with a cell analyser machine.

The success story is similar with regards to multi-function modules. For instance, ASCO has recently created special assemblies involving an injection-moulded manifold with a bellows seal valve used in equipment designed to handle ultra-pure laboratory water.

In a further multi-function module example, this time involving fluid isolation valves with a flapper mechanism on a blood analyser, a valve module with several fluid isolation valves and a pressure sensor was mounted on a customised acrylic manifold. Distinctive features of the innovative flapper mechanism were the low number of moving parts and corrosion-resistant fluid isolation from the solenoid operator. This design provided a high level of operational and process safety. In comparison with valves offering similar characteristics, it was possible to further improve self-draining and flushing capabilities. What’s more, due to the valves’ low power consumption of 4W (only 1.5W with optional battery operation), the temperature rise of the fluid could be reduced further.

Yet another recent customer example involved solenoid valves for fluid isolation in a dental application. Here, an injection moulded modular valve manifold was mounted with proportional and miniature fluid isolation valves. These had to shut off or proportionally control liquids and gaseous fluids.

There have also been several special solutions provided recently involving micro-valves in multi-function modules. A case in point comprised an injection moulded manifold with general service valves, a printed circuit board and tubing connection used in a dialysis system. In a further micro-valve application, a ventilator assembly included an injection moulded valve manifold with pressure sensors.

Ultimately, products for analytical and medical technology must meet very specific requirements. ASCO has proven that it can offer a variety of valve solutions that are specially adapted to gas and fluid handling in medicine, biomedicine and industrial analytics – in fact wherever standard products have shown to be unsuitable.

Helping to keep patients mobile!

EOVE revolutionises the market by significantly reducing the weight of its life-saving ventilators. ASCO solinoid valves contribute to this improvement.

The EO-150 Unit
EOVE designs, manufactures, and markets medical and surgical devices used during home care. Launched in 2015, the EO-150 has a big advantage over its competitors. Weighing just 1.8 kg, it is the lightest ventilator on the market and allows patients greater mobility. "The EO-150 is designed mainly for patients with serious medical conditions, many of whom use a ventilator 24/7," explains Fabien Cotteaux, founder of EOVE. "Mobility is not just a convenience, it is also a reason for living. Patients who are active and mobile live longer and have undeniably better social relations".

"The ASCO solenoid valve is an essential component of our ventilators," says Mr. Cotteaux. "This is because it meets a twofold need -- it contributes to controlling a complex process and is light enough to ensure that our ventilators remain portable".

Expiration is achieved by a pneumatic valve on the patient circuit that is controlled by ASCO's PreciFlow IPC solenoid valve. The unit operates in a closed loop via various sensors. Control is achieved by varying the current and the function was entirely programmed by EOVE.

"The first thing we wanted was a solenoid that could combine high-precision control with high repeatability. We contacted our regular partner, ASCO, which immediately proposed a solution that proved to be ideal due to its progressive opening and excellent repeatability."

ASCO's PreciFlow IPC proportional solenoid valves are especially suited to medical and industrial analysis applications, in particular medical ventilators and mass flow controllers. The core of these solenoid valves is held in the core tube between two specifically profiled flat springs to completely eliminate friction and offer excellent control performance with a hysteresis of less than 5% and a repeatability and sensitivity of less than 1%.

"In terms of the EO-150's portability, ASCO was the only company to come up with an adequate solution. Unlike during the tests we conducted with the competitors' valves, the PreciFlow IPC does not overheat, control and reliability are not affected, and the consumption is extremely reasonable,"  commented Mr. Cotteaux.

The EO-150 consists of a portable module with six hours of battery life and a docking station. The module can be safely be removed from the docking station for easier portability. It is also networked, making it possible to obtain data remotely.

ASCO 202 PreciFlow IBC valve
The Series 202 PreciFlow IPC (Inlet Pressure Compensated) solenoid valve proportionally controls the flow of air. This innovation enables high pressures and flow rates with a low-energy coil (2.5 W max.). Although compact, it offers a high variable flow rate (190 l/min at 2.6 bar) without a minimum operating pressure. The PreciFlow IPC is available in 2/2 NC function with a 3 mm orifice and can be used over a pressure range of 0 to 7 bar with a maximum inlet pressure of 10 bar. The valves were delivered to EOVE in order to immediately meet the requested function of being fitted with an adequate connector with a specific cable length.

"Since being launched in 2015, more than a thousand EO-150s are in use. There have been zero reports of failure, which is crucial considering what it the EO-150 is used for," says Mr. Cotteaux.

These devices meet stringent safety standards and bear the CE marking for medical devices.
