Cryogenic valve.

Designed for low-temperature applications, such as cold boxes, to reduce energy costs, optimise performance and extend product longevity.

The Fisher™ IC2 Cryogenic Top-Entry Control Valve, ideal for cold box applications in air separation units, hydrogen liquefaction and LNG production has been introduced. Cold boxes are insulated enclosures that house cryogenic equipment, such as heat exchangers, distillation columns, piping and valves. The IC2 control valve meets the stringent demands of these extremely low-temperature environments, operating reliably at temperatures as low as -452 degrees Fahrenheit (-269 degrees Celsius).

Operating in cryogenic environments can be challenging due to various factors, including product and energy losses due to emissions, which lead to reduced profitability, high maintenance costs and regulatory concerns. To address these and other issues, this control valve includes high-performance cryogenic enhancements, including a narrow extension diameter and fluid baffle.

These components work together to minimise heat conduction, thereby reducing the energy required to maintain process fluid temperatures, while enhancing overall operational sustainability. The IC2 control valve’s Fisher enhanced ENVIRO-SEAL™ packing system and bellows limit leakage to a maximum of 100 parts per million by volume, meeting or surpassing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

The Emerson Fisher IC2 control valve provides longevity with its hardened trim materials, enhanced ENVIRO-SEAL packing and metal-to-metal seating. When maintenance is necessary, the IC2 valve offers simple serviceability via features such as top-entry, a single packing nut, a modular stem assembly, an independently replaceable bellows, and a replaceable valve plug and seat ring—with a special tool provided for seat ring removal.

The IC2 control valve is rated for the CL600 pressure class, and it is available in line sizes from 1 to 4 inches (DN25 to DN100), with more options forthcoming.

Valve with improved performance at lower price.

The next-generation Level 1 AxisPro® valve, rounding out the line of Vickers by Danfoss servo performance software-configurable proportional valves has just been launched. With a new digital amplifier and support for industry-leading network protocols, the valve offers advanced performance, control, and seamless connectivity. Complementing the valve’s launch is Pro-FX™ Configure v2, the redesigned software configuration platform featuring an intuitive interface, streamlined setup, and real-time tuning for faster and easier installations. AxisPro valves are ideal for demanding industrial hydraulic applications such as presses, machine tools, factory automation, and more.

These AxisPro valves offer an upgrade to the Vickers by Danfoss KBSDG proportional valve lineup, giving customers a smarter, faster, and fully connected motion control solution. Designed for seamless integration into a wide range of applications, the new valves feature a digital amplifier and support for widely used network protocols such as Profinet®, EtherCAT®, Ethernet/IP, and CANopen. The digital amplifier increases precision and improves tuning, enabling easier system optimization and enhanced performance. Through flow linearization, the valve delivers consistent, stable flow across all operating conditions. Dither and deadband adjustments eliminate valve stick-slip and dead zones, resulting in smooth and precise motion.

AxisPro valves feature a robust, high-performance design. The valves offer best-in-class power capacity and speed plus pressure gain of 2.05%. Ingress protection ratings of IP65 and IP67 plus ambient temperature ratings of 70°C (158°F) increase reliability. Optional corrosion resistance and extreme vibration resistance (up to 50g) further enhance the valve’s durability for use in severe applications.

The valves are software configurable, enabling quick and simple setup, tuning, and commissioning. The valves are programmed using Danfoss’ new Pro-FX™ Configure v2 software, which offers a streamlined step-by-step workflow for setup across control modes, including spool position, cylinder position, pressure, speed, or force.

Advanced tuning capabilities allow users to optimize control loops with real-time parameter adjustment, maximizing performance for specific loads, speeds, and conditions. AxisPro valves support configuration via USB, Ethernet, or CAN bus.

Its integral diagnostics facilitate rapid troubleshooting, minimizing system downtime. Top-mounted LED lights provide a real-time visual indicator of valve status, simplifying the identification of potential issues.

AxisPro Level 1 valves are available in six models. The single-stage KBSD14 is now available in 03 and 05 sizes (NG06 and NG10). The two-stage KBHD15 will be available in 05, 07, 08, and 10 sizes (NG10, NG16, NG25, and NG32) in November 2025. The valves are ideal for a wide range of industries, including primary metals, rubber and plastics, wood processing, pulp and paper, oil and gas, and civil engineering.

For more advanced application needs, AxisPro Level 2 and Level 3 valves offer servo-performance with dual motion control. Level 2 valves enable onboard closed-loop motion control, simplifying PLC requirements and increasing dynamic performance. Level 3 valves add built-in pressure and temperature sensors to make commissioning and diagnostics even faster and easier.

Ball valve.

A Rising Stem Ball Valve is being added  Trillium Flow's to its extensive Red Point® production catalogue of ball, check, double block and bleed, gate, and globe valves. This latest innovation is designed to reduce friction on moving components, extend maximum service life, and provide a low-maintenance design. The Rising Stem Ball Valve is widely used in the oil and gas industry, where its robust design and reliability in preventing leakage are valued.

Fred Jansen, the General Manager of their facility in the Netherlands, where Red Point valves are manufactured, said, “We’re proud to solve more customer challenges by adding this solution to our growing portfolio.”

The new valve’s friction-free sealing and non-contact ball movement achieve longer potential service life and, combined with the single-seated design, features a broad operating temperature range from -196°C to 450°C. The impact of thermal expansion has been minimized by the configuration of the valve components, allowing for this impressive temperature range.

This newest model is suitable for dirty service with a uniquely designed bottom trunnion that ensures the prevention of solid particle ingress into the valve.

The distinct quarter-turn helix-shaped stem mechanism design is fully enclosed within the valve body, providing additional protection against environmental factors and eliminating the requirement for frequent lubrication. When closing the valve, the downward linear movement of the helix passing through the roller bars on the top of the ball causes the ball to rotate 90 degrees without physical contact, ensuring friction-free operation.

Regular ball and pin assembly designs often suffer from potential welding-related cracking issues. The new RSBV design eliminates this by employing an innovative weld-free design, enhancing its reliability and longevity. Additionally, we have addressed further weld cracking and thermal expansion concerns arising from the use of different metals with a non-shrink fitted/welded seat design.

The extensively tested Outside Screw and Yoke design is renowned for its reliability and lightweight construction, making it a preferred choice for operations worldwide. As always with Red Point designs, valves are made according to the best fit solution based on each customer’s specifications. The new RSBV design is no exception and comes in a wide range of materials, depending on what’s most appropriate.

Next-generation pneumatic valves.

Greater range with new flow rates, configurations, functionality, certifications and more.

The latest stage of Emerson's next-generation AVENTICS™ Series XV pneumatic valve systems with new flow rates, configurations, accessories, UL certifications and more. These updates give original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) greater design flexibility and scalability to precisely configure valves when engineering handling systems and automation solutions.

After successfully launching the AVENTICS Series XV03 in most world regions in July, Emerson has now released the popular XV03 valve for U.S. markets, as well as globally released the larger Series XV05 and a bottom-ported version of the XV03. The XV03 provides flow volumes up to 350 liters per minute in normal conditions (NL/min), and the XV05 provides up to 1000 NL/min.

In addition to new flow rates and configurations, Series XV valves are also available with UL certifications and more accessories. Both the XV03 and XV05 are designed for compliance with UL429 and UL61010 for quality and safety. New and existing accessories provide greater functionality and include separators, blank stations, pressure supply plates, sandwich pressure supply, and sandwich pressure exhaust. There is also a custom toolbox that contains the most important tools to assemble XV systems.

The next phase of the staged XV release will see the continued launch of new accessories as they become available, as well as greater connectivity. Additional fieldbus protocols will be launched throughout 2025, including Powerlink, CanOpen in mid-2025 and AS-I in late 2025. The valve systems currently support Profinet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, Profibus DP and IO-Link.

Next-generation Series XV valves use proven core valve AVENTICS technology and include metal threads, aluminum base plates and compact dimensions to make integration easier. Complete valve systems are easy to commission with the AVENTICS online configurator that streamlines design and layout. To reduce lead times for every global region, three Emerson plants are equipped to manufacture orders.

Providing higher flow rates in a compact valve package, Series XV valves enable more efficient and flexible pneumatic system performance while offering products customized for specific markets, including factory automation, automotive and tire, food and packaging applications. Electric dump valves meet environmental standards.

Emerson recently partnered with Laramie Energy to help the Colorado-based oil and gas producer comply with state and federal emissions regulations. Using ASCOTM zero-emissions electric dump valves, the only such all-electric solution for separators, scrubbers, and compression units, the company helped Laramie Energy achieve compliance by eliminating both vented and fugitive emissions from the liquid dump stage of their separation process.*

Conventional dump valves are often piloted by well gas, which can leak into the atmosphere as vented and fugitive emissions. Some states, including Colorado, have emissions regulations that include fines for noncompliance, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a waste emissions charge for methane emissions that exceed specified thresholds.

If fugitive emissions are detected, the EPA requires oil and gas producers to report their greenhouse gas data and conduct tests, surveys and repairs. Companies that fall out of regulation must pay expensive fines and waste subsequent downtime to reestablish compliance.

In comparison, ASCO zero-emission electric dump valves use ultra-low-power electric actuation, which removes the need to vent well gas in upstream applications. And, unlike traditional dump valves, they are fugitive-emissions-free by design because they have no valve packing.

With precise control, ASCO electric dump valves actuate in 50 to 75 milliseconds compared to conventional valves that take several seconds, thus virtually eliminating any chance of gas blowby. This helped Laramie Energy better maintain the static pressure of their vessels which ultimately led to an increase in natural gas production. The valves also use 1.2 watts (W) of energy compared to a conventional electric retrofit kit that uses 96 W, reducing valve power usage by 98.75%.

“Though initially designed for legacy well sites, these fully electric dump valves can help oil and gas companies achieve compliance and avoid red tape on both newly drilled production sites and existing production sites to meet new standards,” said Michael Land, sales development manager with Emerson’s discrete automation business. “Our solution provides a cost-effective, maintenance-free alternative to meet compliance when compared to other solutions like instrument air, nitrogen and electric retrofit kits.”

Laramie Energy focuses on developing unconventional oil and gas reserves within the Rocky Mountains (North America), operating roughly 1,500 wells. The company installed ASCO electric dump valves in newly drilled wells while updating its legacy wells with the solution. Beyond ensuring compliance, the valves have provided additional benefits, including less maintenance and greater well efficiency.

Industrial hydraulic valve.

The Vickers® by Danfoss portfolio of proportional valves has been expanded with the launch of the KBFRG4-5 valve. The new single-stage, four-way hydraulic valve features a round solenoid design and delivers high power capacity and superior durability. The valve is designed for a range of industrial applications, including wind turbines, machine tools, plastic molding, metal forming, pulp and paper processing, and more.

The KBFRG4-5 proportional valve features a market-leading maximum pressure rating of 350 bar and a maximum flow of 290 liters per minute at 57 bar, delivering higher power capacities than other valves on the market. Its competitive step response of 20 milliseconds further adds to its superior performance capabilities.

Engineered to withstand the toughest conditions, the KBFRG4-5 proportional valve features an IP67 ingress protection rating and a robust metal housing for increased vibration and shock resistance (7.8 g random, 50 g shock). A high corrosion resistance option is also available. The valve complies with industry standard certifications, including CE, UKCA, REACH, RoHS, and EMI/EMC.

Interoperable valv pneumatic valves.

Multiple interoperable valve sizes and higher flow rates in a compact design.

Emerson has just launched its AVENTICS™ Series XV pneumatic valves. Series XV valves are designed with interoperability in mind to provide machine builders across multiple industries and factory automation applications with a flexible and cost-effective valve platform. The new valves are ideal for machine builders and end users that operate across the globe, with universal threads and other features that support regional standards and global availability.

Series XV valves provide higher flow rates in a compact valve package that enables more efficient and flexible pneumatic system performance for factory automation, automotive and tire, and food and packaging applications. This helps manufacturers boost productivity and allows them to offer products customized for specific markets and customer preferences.

Protection from catastrophic actuator failure.

Severe injury or death can be caused by the explosive forces released if a high-pressure spring-loaded actuator device fails, along with significant damage to equipment and facilities. However, there is often a lack of regular inspection and maintenance, and the risks have attracted little attention in terms of technology or regulation. A pioneering new energy containment safety device designed to reduce these risks has been launched by Survitec.

David Montgomery, Head of Sales at Survitec, asserts: “The introduction of the Gauntlet is a testament to our proactive stance on safety enhancement. The absence of detailed regulatory control pertaining to valve actuator failures or maintenance of this critical component is a pressing issue that demands immediate attention. We urge regulators to initiate further discussions and ask operators to act promptly to safeguard their personnel and critical plants in the event of an uncontained failure of an actuator.”

Compatible with all valve actuator types, the Survitec Gauntlet is a protective sleeve constructed from lightweight “bullet-proof” para-aramid armouring, ten times as strong as steel, and designed to contain the unpredictable forces of failure.

Technically qualified by the classification society Lloyd’s Register, the Survitec Gauntlet provides immediate containment protection, enhancing safety measures and minimising potential hazards. It is of minimal weight, placing no additional stress on the actuator, and protects the workings of the actuator from further corrosion and component degradation.

Survitec has supplied its Gauntlets to a majority of operators, including super-majors in the North Sea, and has recently received an order from a Spanish oil and gas operator.

Valve actuator failures offshore are often due to corrosion and the age of the units, with hundreds of actuators in service on each offshore installation.

Paul Gwynne, Sales & Contracts Manager at Survitec, said: “The valve return spring sits in a pre-loaded or loaded condition and is powerful enough to close down the valve even during full operation. However, far too many of these actuators have been left to degrade. We are now seeing hundreds in an unsafe or unknown condition – which may be intensified by pneumatic and/or hydraulic control pressures and, therefore, a huge issue and possible danger to equipment and personnel.

“What is known is that many actuators have suffered significant corrosion of the unit's internal workings, not only the exterior weather shield, which is visible. The problem can be compounded when these actuators are tagged as non-operational or decommissioned, no longer serviced but in place, but still containing a pre-load force in the spring, which can be equivalent to several tonnes depending on the size of the actuator.

“There have been a lot of occasions where the spring has eroded to the point of failure, then failed catastrophically, or the retaining bolt and end cap have failed and been ejected. So much so that the UK Health and Safety Executive has advised all operators to enforce action in this area. The force and impact of an actuator failure can be violent and often potentially fatal, impacting people, critical plants and even pipelines.”

The concept of the safety device was developed due to issues identified in the North Sea oil and gas sector, oil rigs, platforms, and floating installations, such as FPSOs and FSRUs. The Survitec Gauntlet can be applied to any facility that operates actuator valves and where risks need to be mitigated.

Self-calibrating drive actuator.

The Fisher™ easy-Drive™ 200R Electric Actuator just introduced by Emerson is for use on Fisher butterfly and ball valves. When paired with these valves, the new actuator performs accurately and reliably under the extreme conditions found in many heavy industries, particularly oil and gas installations in cold remote locations. These actuator/valve assemblies increase uptime, improve performance, and reduce the risk of emissions posed by gas-operated systems locations.

Many pneumatic valve actuators installed in remote locations are operated using natural gas, but this technology releases atmospheric emissions every time the valve is actuated. Electric actuators address this issue by eliminating control-related emissions, but existing solutions have limitations, each of which is addressed by the 200R actuator.

  • Easy installation & calibration: The 200R calibrates itself when a user simply clicks one button using the easy-Drive Configurator Software, provided free of charge with the actuator.
  • Low energy usage: Operates on 11 to 30 VDC power and consumes less than 0.4 watts when in the holding position mode, making it suitable for use in applications without available utility power.
  • Low temperature operation: Operates in temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F), eliminating the need for a space heater in all but the most extreme temperature applications.
  • Loss of power positioning: In the case of loss of power, the actuator can be driven to the user-defined position using its optional RPU-100 reserve power unit.
  • Remote monitoring & configuration: Real-time monitoring of position, movements, cycles, travel time to position, and power loss available via a Modbus RTU serial interface.

The 200R is an extension of the easy-Drive actuator portfolio, which also includes actuator options for both globe and rotary valves.

Enhanced Storage Tank Reliability and Protection.

Safety valve portfolio now includes a 2-inch model, enabling closer-to-setpoint control, easier installation, and simplified maintenance for smaller tanks.

The Fisher™ 63EGLP-16 Pilot Operated Relief Valve for installation on pressurised bullet tanks used to store liquid propane and anhydrous ammonia has been released by Emerson. This type of pressure relief valve (PRV) is typically installed on tanks fabricated by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who provide them to end users, engineering firms or contractor customers. The new valve is certified under UL132 and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Section VIII.

With a pre-installed national pipe tapered (NPT) thread standard 2-inch male hex nipple, this new product serves the need for a solution with a 2-inch connection that provides the same benefit as traditional multi-ported valves, but with simplified installation and maintenance. For this application, the PRV must be connected directly to the tank, with no isolation valve between the tank and the PRV. This National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 58 code requirement presents challenges when testing the PRV while the tank is pressurised and in operation.

The Fisher 63EGLP-16 Pilot Operated Relief Valve addresses this and other issues because it is the only pilot-operated relief valve on the market designed specifically for this type of service. Operation is implemented with a dual pilot array, providing redundancy, and allowing for removal of one pilot for testing while the other is operational.

Because this is a critical safety-related application, reliable operation over a long lifecycle is needed. This requirement is met by the 2-inch PRV because it is similar in design to the Fisher 63EGLP 4-inch CL300 model, which has been proven in use over the past 10 years.

Tractor valves.

Danfoss Power Solutions has enhanced its tractor valve platform with additional electrohydraulic module sizes as well as new mechanical modules, enabling the valve to be used on a wider range of tractor models.

“Danfoss tractor valves have long been used on many of the top tractor brands worldwide. With these enhancements to our valve platform, we are now a full-line valve supplier able to meet the needs of a wider range of tractor models, from small to large and basic to advanced,” said Jonas Lauersen, senior sales development manager, Spool Valve Solutions, Danfoss Power Solutions. “The valve offers a number of benefits, including a high degree of design flexibility and minimized parasitic losses. Danfoss’ unmatched global service and support rounds out the offering, providing our customers with a complete package.”

Proven in farm fields for more than 20 years, Danfoss’ tractor valve provides rear implement, front implement, and front loader control. Built on the PVG 32 proportional valve platform, the tractor valve offers a variety of components and features specific to agricultural applications. A range of valve modules — inlets, working modules for auxiliary functions, hitch modules, top-mounted modules, and endplates — enable customization for each specific application.

Danfoss has added zero-leak electrohydraulic PVBZ 16, 40, and 48 modules to the platform, which enables the valve to cover flow rates of up to 170 liters per minute (44.9 gallons per minute). The new sizes enable customers to tailor the flow rate for each service more accurately. All PVBZ modules are based on the PVG 32 platform, eliminating the need for interface plates and allowing them to be combined in numerous configurations to match customer needs. The new modules are compatible with PVE electrohydraulic actuators.

For tractors with mechanical implement actuation requirements, Danfoss has added zero-leak mechanical MVBZ modules to its valve platform. The MVBZ modules can be combined with the electrohydraulic PVBZ modules, enabling the use of mechanical modules for auxiliary function control and electrohydraulic modules for hitch control. The new mechanical modules also enable the valve to be used on base-model tractors.

Digital process controller.

Reliably upgrades performance, safety and compliance by making more data available to operators.

The Fisher™ FIELDVUE™ DPC2K digital process controller (DPC2K) has been announced by Emerson. The DPC2K can be retrofitted to Fisher Wizard pneumatic controllers, and to pneumatic controllers from other manufacturers. The result is greatly improved closed-loop control and reliability, significantly reduced maintenance, improved safety, and superior environmental compliance. It also provides numerous connectivity options, enabling remote setpoints, remote access for configuration, monitoring, and other features.

Pneumatic controllers have served industry well for decades to regulate control valve actions, but they have many limitations. Closed loop control is sluggish and not precise, with significant deviations from setpoint common, and degraded performance over time as their mechanical components wear out. This wear and tear negatively impact reliability, with excessive maintenance required. All interactions with pneumatic controllers must be performed locally at the control valve, creating safety issues by exposing personnel to often hazardous plant environments.

The DPC2K addresses these and other issues, and it can be retrofitted as a direct replacement for the pneumatic controllers installed on most valves, regardless of manufacturer. Closed loop control is greatly improved with configurable loop types, over 150 units of supported measure, 20 times-per-second (50 milliseconds) scan and update rates, configurable dead band, anti-reset windup, dynamic reset limiting, and other features. These features work together to keep the process variable—typically pressure, flow, level or temperature—close to setpoint, along with greatly improved recovery from saturated conditions.

The DPC2K is designed to maintain its high level of performance for years with no required maintenance, and when maintenance is required, it is easily performed using modular replacement components. Another important advantage from this upgrade is the ability to easily interact with the DPC2K locally or remotely. Local interactions are performed via its menu-driven LCD and six-button user interface, with four buttons used for navigation and two for operator input.

The DPC2K has inputs, outputs, and intelligence to perform local closed-loop digital control using the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller. It can accept a 4-20mA input from a two-wire or four-wire instrument, typically the process variable (PV). For pressure control applications, an optional pressure sensor can be used to provide the PV.

Fisher LoopConnect software provides the most comprehensive remote access, including configuration and monitoring, networked or direct Ethernet connection, and alerts for troubleshooting. Options include integral, sealed gauge pressure sensor with 0-30, 0-100, 0-300, 0-600, or 0-1500 pounds-per-square-inch range; and pneumatic output with low bleed of less than 3.0 standard cubic feet per hour.

Because the DPC2K is configurable, the same base model can be used in a variety of applications, including but not limited to pressure, flow, level, temperature, percentage, volume, and rate control. The DPC2K is rated for use in Class 1 Division 1 or Zone 1 hazardous areas, and it has an operating temperature range of -40-80 degrees Celsius. Inputs of 9-28 volts direct current are accommodated, with a typical power draw of only 1 watt.

Increased valve capacity with less noise.

Trim solution leverages additive manufacturing to implement optimised process designs.

The innovative new Fisher™ Whisper™ Trim Technology has been announced. This is for use in both rotary and globe valves, providing an extension to Emerson’s current portfolio of Whisper noise solutions. This next generation of Fisher Whisper Trim technology addresses noise issues by using additive manufacturing and other advanced techniques to create trim designs with increased capabilities.

Control valve noise is often problematic in industrial applications. It is created by high pressure drops across a valve, which generate high velocities as the fluid moves through the narrowed passages in the valve body. This aerodynamic noise has a strong dependence on the gas velocity, so high flow and high pressure drop applications tend to reach high sound levels very quickly. This type of noise can damage hearing, and over time it can destroy tubing, sensitive equipment, nearby piping connections, and valve components.

Rotary valves are typically less expensive than globe valves, but they are inherently prone to higher noise levels due to their trim configuration. It is difficult to incorporate a large amount of noise reduction into the trim because of the limited available space and other factors, so rotary valves are not usually employed in high noise applications.

The new rotary style Fisher Whisper Trim Technology addresses this issue, with additive manufacturing used to provide up to 20 A-weighted decibels (dBA) of sound level reduction, a 10 dBA improvement compared to traditionally manufactured solutions. These noise reduction levels are achieved while largely maintaining the high flow capacities common with rotary valves, and this solution saves significant costs as compared to globe valve alternatives.

A wide selection of low noise trims is currently available in globe valves, each using a progressively more complicated trim configuration to produce higher levels of noise reduction. Usually, the more complex the trim style, the higher the noise reduction and cost, and the lower the flow capacity. If high flow capacities are required, a much larger valve body has been necessary when using traditional low noise trim designs.

The new globe style Fisher Whisper Trim Technology addresses this issue by using additive manufacturing to create trim designs with increased flow capacity. Globe valves using this technology have a 20% increased flow capacity as compared to traditional trim designs, while still offering up to 30 dBA noise reduction. This enables the use of smaller valves where larger sizes were previously required, saving space and cost.

Each of these solutions provides significant noise reduction without the drawbacks of traditional designs, giving end users more choices to solve issues related to valve installations where noise is problematic.

Valve health.

Software optimises maintenance based on valve condition data, saving manhours and downtime.

A powerful software tool, Plantweb Insight™ Valve Health Application from Emerson, combines Fisher control valve expertise with advanced analytic algorithms. The new app makes it possible for users to visualise an entire connected fleet of valves, while prioritising actions based on the health index of each valve. This helps plant personnel optimise valve repair activities, resulting in faster and better maintenance decisions, leading to reduced downtime.

“Plants and facilities harnessing all the functionalities of the Plantweb Insight Valve Health Application will experience reduced analysis time, faster troubleshooting and improved prioritisation of maintenance actions,” said Jaime Alvarado Millan, software product manager for flow controls with Emerson’s final control business. “The result will be fewer man-hours required for repairs and maintenance, increased uptime and fewer unplanned shutdowns. These and other benefits will increase productivity, lower costs and improve profitability.”
 
Most process plants and facilities have hundreds of control valves installed and operating in various applications. These valves have multiple parts that must frequently move in concert to regulate flows of process media, with some of these parts coming into constant, direct contact with the media. These operating conditions create wear and tear, requiring maintenance personnel to track the condition of each valve. This is typically done by examining each valve individually, either locally or remotely, a time-consuming endeavour that requires a high level of expertise to ascertain valve health and follow-up action.

The Plantweb Insight Valve Health Application speeds and simplifies this control valve monitoring task by providing a user-friendly interface, with easy-to-understand and intuitive graphics. The app includes Emerson’s Valve Health Index, produced by a proprietary algorithm, which shows plant personnel the level of health for each valve. The Valve Health Index allows users to enter information regarding their plant's processes, including criticality of the valve and financial impact if the valve were to fail, making the index more informative.

The app allows users to prioritise repair and maintenance activities with five different indicators – Repair Urgency Status, Valve Health Index, Financial Impact, Criticality, and NE107 Alert Status – to meet specific needs. The app includes explanations, recommendations, and suggested time to take action. This last indicator is totally new to the market and is one of the app’s exclusive features.

Valves for electrolysers.

GSR Ventiltechnik has developed a new valve series for the hydrogen sector. The direct-pressure controlled valves are characterized by a long service life, which is achieved by the unique design of the stem seal. It enables 35% more switching cycles than comparable competitive products.

The generation of electricity from wind and solar power plants will be massively expanded in the coming years. However, since these forms of electricity generation are subject to fluctuations due to the time of day and weather conditions, and the electricity generated cannot be stored easily, new concepts are still needed here. The production of green hydrogen from the surplus electricity of renewable energy plants could be the solution. Hydrogen can be temporarily stored, transported and used in gas grids, or converted back into electricity in gas turbines.

This green hydrogen is produced by splitting water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) using electrolysers and renewable electricity. The new externally controlled valves from GSR control the processes surrounding electrolysis.

A version for use in both the hydrogen and oxygen processes will soon be available. The body materials have been specially qualified for use with H2 or O2. The hydrogen version has reliable, tested sealing elements, while these are even BAM-certified for the oxygen version.

The valves are optimally designed for the prevailing pressure and temperature ranges, have excellent flow characteristics, and feature sophisticated materials that ensure a long service life.

They have high tightness (10-6 mbar l/s) and are ATEX certified. SIL2 acceptance is planned.

To guarantee valve actuator performance.

Rotork Controls chief development engineer Geoff Beeho comments: “If you look at something like an oil line, then any failure of the valve actuator could potentially be costing millions of dollars a day. We have to be able to guarantee the performance of the actuators in the most demanding conditions, so testing is vital. TorqSense torque transducers from Sensor Technology are a key element of our test rigs.”

Companies and businesses around the world rely on Rotork actuators, in applications as diverse as power generation, water and sewage, industrial processes, subsea, marine, HVAC, incinerators and cement plants. Common features in many of these applications are challenging environmental conditions, extremes of temperatures, and high costs associated with any downtime. Because of this, absolute reliability of the valve actuators is vital.

The company designs custom actuator designs built around motorised gearboxes, using non-standard open frame motors. “We use a variety of motors depending on the particular application, including DC motors, single-phase motors and three-phase motors, but we don’t rely on off-the-shelf products. Instead, we use open frame motors that we integrate directly into our own systems.

“Performance testing is very important,” he continues. “The duty cycle is atypical – our motors are not in continuous use, only running intermittently and for short period. What is important to us is the short term ratings, and this data isn’t always readily available. We have to have performance data that will tell us exactly what we need to know about the motors in these most demanding applications.”

They designed their own rig to test the motors, with Sensor Technology TorqSense transducers at its heart. “We needed non-contact torque sensors in the rig. The early design used magnetically coupled torque sensors but we were never completely happy with these. So when we upgraded the rig to be able to perform a wider range of tests, we took the opportunity to look around the market and we found the TorqSense transducers.” 

“The TorqSense transducers immediately struck us as being a much more robust solution, better suited to handling the torques we were subjecting them to,” comments Beeho. The common practices of over-specifying a motor that guarantee reliable operation in standard applications simply don’t apply in valve actuation. “Motor sizing is critical,” he continues. “If we put in a motor that is too big, then we can risk damaging the valve. We can use motors that appear to be under-rated, but because our duty-cycle is so short we can get better performance from the motor. But the performance data to support this sort of motor use isn’t always available, or isn’t always reliable, so we need to perform our own tests. We also need to know how our motors will handle extremes of temperature in given applications so that reliability is never compromised. The TorqSense transducers allow us to make all the required tests.”

An advantage of the TorqSense transducers in the Rotork test rig is that they provide both analogue and digital outputs. “This has proved to be a real bonus,” says Beeho. “Not only can we use one output to check the calibration of the other, but it also means we have the flexibility to use both outputs performing different tests. For example, we might use the analogue output to feed torque and speed data into the power analyser during a performance test, and then use the digital output for a temperature test. Here, we run the motor for 15 minutes at constant torque and see how hot it gets. The output from the TorqSense transducer allows us to close the loop so that we can keep the torque constant.”

In any application, the fundamental considerations are the actuator’s ability to overcome the resistive forces of the valve, and the dynamic performance requirements to enable the valve to adequately meet the process demands. With its comprehensive testing procedures built around the TorqSense transducers, Rotork Controls has the confidence that its electrically operated valve actuators will always meet the application requirements.

Filter Regulators allow manufacturers to single-source complete valve piloting solutions.

The new ASCO™ Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators, which maximise process efficiency and reduce unplanned downtime in a broad range of process applications, have been announced by Emerson. This line of durable, aluminum filter regulators can handle the highest flow rates of any regulators in their class and provides precise pressure regulation to downstream instruments.

An alternative to stainless steel filter regulators, ASCO Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators complete Emerson’s full suite of valve piloting technologies. This allows process manufacturers to source their total valve piloting solutions, including solenoid valves, switch boxes, filter regulators and accessories, from one global technology partner.

By using one supplier, manufacturers can simplify their supply chains, improve design accuracy and access comprehensive engineering support. Designing a valve piloting solution that includes technologies from different suppliers splits vendor responsibility and can introduce an opportunity for error.

“Sourcing valve piloting technology from multiple vendors is time-consuming and complicates supply chains, while limited options for conventional filter regulators leave some customers with unmet needs,” said Mike Howells, marketing manager, process applications for Europe, Middle East & Africa at Emerson. “Our new ASCO Series 641, 642 and 643 Aluminum Filter Regulators simplify sourcing for our customers and ensures that they have industry-leading technology that enhances process efficiency, safety and reliability.”

With the market’s highest flow rate capabilities of up to 370.8 standard cubic feet per minute (10,500 liters per minute), the aluminum filter regulators improve process efficiency and ensure that stringent process valve opening/closing requirements like those for emergency shutdown valves are met. Higher flow rates provide more air to the valve actuator, which increases the opening and closing speed of process valves. Depending on the application, slow valve closures can increase safety risks.

These robust filter regulators feature rugged construction and advanced engineering that further enhance safety and maintain plant uptime, while specialized powder coating ensures reliable operation in harsh, corrosive process environments. Effective moisture removal keeps media dry to protect downstream devices, and sophisticated media filtration prevents downstream process contamination.

This three-tiered regulator line provides a .25-inch to 1-inch coverage and is highly customizable. Twenty separate parts replaced with one!

The easy-e™ Trim Cartridge, is a complete trim repair solution for Fisher™ easy-e globe valves from Emerson. This factory-assembled repair cartridge combines all valve replacement parts, plus the bonnet, into a simple and ready-to-install repair solution, streamlining the repair experience while creating time and money savings throughout the maintenance process.

Before the introduction of this solution, any suspected globe valve issues, such as leaking or sticking, typically required disassembly of the valve to identify the required replacement part(s). Once identified, the parts had to be ordered, and then installed after receipt. In the best case, these activities could be performed in the field by an experienced technician, albeit with some difficulty due to the required precision of installation tasks and the multiplicity of parts. In the worst case, a valve would need to be removed from service, resulting in significant added repair cost and labour, and additional downtime.

The Trim Cartridge only addresses all these issues related to wear parts, and it also helps mitigate fugitive emissions with standardized ENVIRO-SEAL™ packing. For older valves without this type of packing in place, the Trim Cartridge provides a quick, simple, and cost-effective upgrade to reduce emissions.

With this new solution, inline valve repair is typically feasible once process media and pressure have been removed from the valve, and it can be performed by any technician, without the need for extensive training or expensive equipment. Safety is improved by reducing technician time in the field because a typical repair process requiring the assembly of up to 20 parts has been simplified into a single, ready-to-install control valve repair solution.

The pre-assembled Trim Cartridge is ordered as a single part number with the standard OEM Fisher valve warranty and is serialised to help improve the traceability and documentation of repair parts. The Trim Cartridge is available for currently installed and new Fisher ET and EZ globe valves in sizes from NPS 1 to NPS 4.
