Miniature linear actuators.

The MLA series miniature linear positioning actuators from Applied Motion Products (AMP) are based around NEMA 11, 14, 17 and 23 frame stepper motors and can be configured as motor-only open-loop variants or supplied complete with the USA-based motion control leader’s StepSERVO™ integrated motors as all-in-one programmable closed-loop linear motion positioning solutions with optional network communication. Available from Mclennan, AMP’s European distribution partner, these very compact linear actuators have leadscrew or rolled ballscrew mechanics or, where improved backlash is required, a patented Constant Force™ leadscrew option featuring a self-adjusting polymer nut arrangement. A comprehensive choice of options covering motor and motion control system, fitted brakes and encoders, precision grade, and working stroke make the MLA series extremely customisable.

The four MLA actuator models cover stroke lengths from 10 mm up to 300 mm in both leadscrew and ballscrew driven variants. Through the range, the choice of leadscrew and ballscrew pitches offered allow the user to select the best combination for speed vs. resolution with maximum rates up to 100 mm/sec achievable for the largest size. The smallest MLA20 actuator with its NEMA 11 frame motor has a width of 22 mm and a height over the carriage of just under 25 mm. The largest MLA42 model, based on the NEMA23 frame stepper, has a width of 62 mm and height over the carriage of 35.5mm. The maximum load capacity for this model is based on the leadscrew/ballscrew pitch with a maximum of 7 kg horizontal and 4.4 kg vertical.

The StepSERVO versions of the MLA actuator range are available on the three larger models. This proven closed-loop stepper technology with its integrated motor drive, programmed control, and optional networking provides a decentralised solution for positioning systems with benefits of reduced machine installation cost through minimised machine wiring, faster machine build and design time and an Industry 4.0 attuned control concept. These ‘Smart’ actuators are available with a wide choice of control options including step/direction, +/- 10V DC for torque/velocity and positioning. AMP’s Q programming software takes care of streaming commands and includes maths and machine I/O control functions. Options for StepSERVO include RS232 or RS485, Modbus RTU and CANopen communications as well as EtherNet/IP and Power over Ethernet (PoE). StepSERVO technology is of course also available in a wide range of separate integrated motors with all of these options in NEMA 11 to 34 frame sizes.

Complete specifications for each MLA series actuator size, covering the many options, load capability and dimensioned drawings are included in a PDF format catalogue, available on request from Mclennan. Also available from AMP and fully supported by Mclennan are MEA series linear actuators which integrate a through-screw motor with a high-precision ball guide for maximum space saving.

Joint actuators.

Servotecnica SpA, available through McLennan, has several years’ experience in customised design and manufacture of its SVTM series rotary actuators. Aimed at the specific requirements for high precision manipulation robotics manufacturers, these mechatronic rotary joints integrate a brushless servomotor, a high-resolution absolute encoder, and a zero-backlash harmonic gear unit in a compact package that typically features a hollow shaft to facilitate through wiring, slip ring assemblies or other essential system services.

Recently the Italian motion component and systems manufacturer developed two new cost-effective standard versions of its SVTM series in 118- and 153-mm diameter package sizes that offer nominal output torques of 33 Nm and 49 Nm respectively, both are equipped with a 19 bits resolution BiSS-C protocol absolute encoder. Available with full application support from Mclennan, the new standard SVTM 70 and 105 mechatronic joints cover a wide selection of the industry’s most commonly specified requirements and have been designed for further customisation for output torque and encoder type.

The smaller SVTM 78 series mechatronic joint features a brushless servomotor with a nominal speed of 3300 rpm at 48 VDC and a 50:1 ratio harmonic gearbox. The complete package with its BISS-C absolute encoder has a peak output torque of 73 Nm and, with a 118 mm diameter and nominal length of just over 101 mm includes a 12 mm through hole. The higher powered SVTM 105 provides a peak torque of 115 Nm. With its larger diameter motor and 50:1 ratio gear unit, this compact 158 mm diameter x 100.5 mm long housing features a 20 mm diameter through hole. Both models are IP65 sealed with waterproof connectors throughout.

Customisation includes alternative resolution absolute encoders - up to 22 bits in BISS and SS protocols as well as incremental, SPI or asynchronous encoder types. Optional gear unit ratios are available with potentially increased overall package length. Robotic system machine builders and OEMs can complement these rotary joints with Servotecnica’s own range of SVTS-A series slip ring assemblies – available in a wide choice of signal/power circuits.

Electric actuators.

In addition to resistance against environmental hazards such as sunlight UV, they now offer more electronic control options.

Advanced controllability options have been added to Thomson Industries' Electrak® LL line of long-life electric linear actuators. In addition to the 600 km of maintenance-free life and 100% duty cycle performance inherent to all the Electrak LL models, machine designers can now get absolute position feedback, CAN bus integration, reduced current flow and higher speeds.

“OEM designers using our long-life actuators in applications that might otherwise require hydraulic or pneumatic systems can now also get more control over the position, load and speed. Our new configuration options enable them to move actuators into position more smoothly, know instantly where they are and use that data in motion profiles,” said Travis Gilmer, Product Manager – Linear Actuators at Thomson.

Key to the Electrak LL’s long-life architecture is a brushless motor, a high-load ball screw assembly, a brake solution that does not wear, and IP69K (static) and IP66 (dynamic) compliant sealing. This combination enables duty cycles of up to 100 percent, up to 600 km of travel life, and up to one million cycles – more than ten times that of electromechanical actuators without these features. The new configuration options for the Electrak LL augment its industry leading durability with advanced control, integration, higher voltage and higher speed options.

Instead of calculating position from sensors and encoders, users of Electrak LL actuators can get direct absolute position information by programming its embedded microprocessor to count mechanical turns within the gearbox. This enables an instantaneous, exact reading of position for the use of advanced control logic. A design engineer might, for example, use it to synchronize movements of multiple cylinders to defined positions at designated speeds

Another advantage of absolute position feedback is that it will be calibrated during assembly and does not need to be recalibrated. This improves efficiency in applications such as railway and agricultural controls where actuators are usually shut down for extended periods of time when the vehicles are not in use. If the position is not absolute, the actuator will need recalibration on restart. Also, the Electrak LL absolute position measurement does not require mechanical contact, which minimizes wear to the system.

Advanced control sequences need a way to share exchange instructions and data, and Thomson long-life actuators provide this as well. Electrak LL users can build applications around either CANopen® or SAE J1939 communications. This provides maximum flexibility to integrate actuators with other components or productivity and business applications.

High-duty-cycle applications, such as mobile robots, are usually battery powered as low current draw can be an advantage. Electrak LL users can now meet application power requirements by configuring their systems with a 48 V power supply. In comparison to the 24 V version, the 48 V will reduce resistive power losses, which enables thinner, less expensive wiring.

A 2 kN (450 lbs) load option to the Electrak LL has also been added. This optimizes the actuator to handle higher speeds with longer service life.

Applications.
The new configuration options of the Electrak LL are for those who want both higher duty cycles and maximum control over their applications, such as the following:

  • Smart railway pantographs and couplers
  • Automated guided vehicles (AGVs)
  • Material handling logistics trains
  • Automated farming robots
  • Movable steps and access lifts for trains and busses
  • Gravel bins and hatches

Stepper motor linear actuators with encoding for positional feedback.

The availability of a rotating-nut stepper motor linear actuator (SMLA) with a rotary encoder as a standard option has been announced by Thomson Industries. Machine designers with applications requiring positional feedback can now specify the full line of SMLAs integrated with this enhancement.

“We are pleased to announce that Thomson customers who want to get precise positional measurement from a rotating-nut SMLA can now specify it as a standard addon. This addition rounds out the full line as we also offer encoder integration as a standard option for our rotating screw and linear actuator configurations,” said Ojesh Singh, Product Manager Lead Screws, Thomson Industries.

Thomson SMLAs use a stepper motor and lead screw shaft to translate rotary motion to linear motion for all three configurations: linear actuator, rotating screw and rotating nut. Previously, designers requiring positional monitoring on either the actuator or rotating screw configurations had to request a custom encoder assembly. A custom option for adding an encoder to the rotating-nut configuration did not even exist.

Growing interest in position data.
As machine designers are developing more complex applications requiring monitoring for speed, distance and position, the integration of encoders has been the most requested SMLA customisation for Thomson. This strong demand led the company to offer encoders as a standard option for all three SMLA configurations.

“Standardising encoder availability is a great leap forward in what machine designers can do with an SMLA platform. They have more flexibility in designing applications that require advanced data gathering and analysis and, given the SMLAs’ immediate availability, can get the units into production faster,” said Singh.

SMLAs with pre-installed rotary encoders are available now in all NEMA motor frame sizes and leadscrew threadforms listed in the company's product catalogue.

To guarantee valve actuator performance.

Rotork Controls has established a global reputation for robust and reliable valve actuators, operating in some of the world’s most demanding and critical applications. Thorough testing of the motors used in the actuators is one of the keys to this assured performance, with TorqSense transducers from Sensor Technology playing a vital role in the test process.

Rotork is the world’s leading manufacturer of electric, pneumatic and hydraulic valve actuators and associated control systems, valve gearboxes and valve accessories. The company’s electric valve actuator division offers an electrical solution to industrial valve control and actuation applications of virtually any size, description and complexity.

Its capabilities encompass actuators and control systems for new plants, plant extensions and upgrades, together with life-of-plant support. The division’s unrivalled range of products offers a robust and economic solution for every valve duty and operating environment.

Rotork Controls chief development engineer Geoff Beeho comments: “If you look at something like an oil line, then any failure of the valve actuator could potentially be costing millions of dollars a day. We have to be able to guarantee the performance of the actuators in the most demanding conditions, so testing is vital. TorqSense torque transducers from Sensor Technology are a key element of our test rigs.”

Companies and businesses around the world rely on Rotork actuators, in applications as diverse as power generation, water and sewage, industrial processes, subsea, marine, HVAC, incinerators and cement plants. Common features in many of these applications are challenging environmental conditions, extremes of temperatures, and high costs associated with any downtime. Because of this, absolute reliability of the valve actuators is vital.

The company designs custom actuator designs built around motorised gearboxes, using non-standard open frame motors. “We use a variety of motors depending on the particular application, including DC motors, single-phase motors and three-phase motors, but we don’t rely on off-the-shelf products. Instead, we use open frame motors that we integrate directly into our own systems.

“Performance testing is very important,” he continues. “The duty cycle is atypical – our motors are not in continuous use, only running intermittently and for short period. What is important to us is the short term ratings, and this data isn’t always readily available. We have to have performance data that will tell us exactly what we need to know about the motors in these most demanding applications.”

They designed their own rig to test the motors, with Sensor Technology TorqSense transducers at its heart. “We needed non-contact torque sensors in the rig. The early design used magnetically coupled torque sensors but we were never completely happy with these. So when we upgraded the rig to be able to perform a wider range of tests, we took the opportunity to look around the market and we found the TorqSense transducers.”

“The TorqSense transducers immediately struck us as being a much more robust solution, better suited to handling the torques we were subjecting them to,” comments Beeho. The common practices of over-specifying a motor that guarantee reliable operation in standard applications simply don’t apply in valve actuation. “Motor sizing is critical,” he continues. “If we put in a motor that is too big, then we can risk damaging the valve. We can use motors that appear to be under-rated, but because our duty-cycle is so short we can get better performance from the motor. But the performance data to support this sort of motor use isn’t always available, or isn’t always reliable, so we need to perform our own tests. We also need to know how our motors will handle extremes of temperature in given applications so that reliability is never compromised. The TorqSense transducers allow us to make all the required tests.”

An advantage of the TorqSense transducers in the Rotork test rig is that they provide both analogue and digital outputs. “This has proved to be a real bonus,” says Beeho. “Not only can we use one output to check the calibration of the other, but it also means we have the flexibility to use both outputs performing different tests. For example, we might use the analogue output to feed torque and speed data into the power analyser during a performance test, and then use the digital output for a temperature test. Here, we run the motor for 15 minutes at constant torque and see how hot it gets. The output from the TorqSense transducer allows us to close the loop so that we can keep the torque constant.”

In any application, the fundamental considerations are the actuator’s ability to overcome the resistive forces of the valve, and the dynamic performance requirements to enable the valve to adequately meet the process demands. With its comprehensive testing procedures built around the TorqSense transducers, Rotork Controls has the confidence that its electrically operated valve actuators will always meet the application requirements.

The 4 bar future.

Roy Schep, Manager Energy Efficiency, SMC Netherlands on helping OEMs develop energy-efficient machines.

Roy Schep
OEMs traditionally design their pneumatic machinery and equipment for an operating pressure of 7 bar. However, by reducing this to 4 bar, I know from experience that end users can cut their energy costs by up to 29% in some instances, creating a powerful USP for the OEM. To help achieve such a desirable outcome, increasing numbers of OEMs are engaging with our team of experts here at SMC, who can offer both the know-how and products to turn this concept into reality.

The shift to 4 bar standard operating pressure is already taking place at some large manufacturing companies. While not seeing mainstream adoption just yet, we believe it will become standard practice in the not-too-distant future as regulations tighten and public pressure for more energy-efficient industry grows.

With this thought in mind, OEMs must begin preparing for a 4 bar landscape. By making the transition now they can become industry pioneers, not only helping to capture a larger share of a rapidly emerging market, but significantly boosting their corporate image. Sure enough, while this task may at first appear daunting, working with the right technology partner can help ensure a painless changeover.

Although the vast majority of machine components will still perform at 4 bar, we should of course keep a close eye on some of them to ensure they operate as intended.

Actuators: pushing ahead.
When designing a machine from scratch, it makes sense to start with the components that do the work: the actuators. In general terms, these are the elements that may not perform at their best, or sometimes not at all, using lower pressure.

Two variables are key: force and speed. In my experience, actuators in the majority of horizontal applications operate at lower supply pressure because they are only acting against friction, not force. As a result, it’s normal to size actuators for use in horizontal orientations to perform at a certain speed.

In vertical applications, however, the story can be different as the cylinder pressure has to overcome the load pressure. These applications tend to be more critical and usually demand specific considerations to ensure the actuator meets its intended objective. Reducing the pressure to 4 bar in vertical applications may require the use of a larger bore actuator to ensure the required force. If using a larger bore size is an issue due to lack of space, our VBA series pressure boosters can provide the required pressure level in that local part of the application without having to increase the main line pressure, making it possible to use the existing actuator size.

In either case, a simple calculation can indicate the theoretical force of the cylinder: F= P x A, where F is force in Newton, P is pressure in bar and A is the effective area of the cylinder bore in cm2. As a point of note, if working at 4 bar demands a larger bore size, the saving in air consumption will offset any additional cost.

One challenge that could arise is that of space. What if a cylinder with a larger bore will not physically fit with your designated design space? Here, scrutiny is required to select a supplier that can provide compact and lightweight actuator solutions. A company such as SMC offers more compact cylinder solutions than its competitors. These products also feature a lower minimum operating pressure and a number of energy-saving concepts.

The other option is to use a different technology, such as a double-force cylinder. Again, tapping into the expertise of a reputable pneumatics supplier will prove useful in specifying the optimal solution.

Valves: take control.
It’s not really high or low pressure that controls actuator speed, but the flow of air it receives. If you need higher speed; the valve will control that for you. With the cylinder bore and force defined, it’s possible to select the valve size. We offer directional and process valves with the lowest power consumption, making them ideal for use at 4 bar.

Blowers and vacuum units.
When it comes to blowers and vacuum units, higher pressure does not mean higher performance, but quite the opposite, which is why a product like a high-efficiency nozzle has the potential to deliver notable gains. This solution can maximise air blow efficiency thanks to a more focused blowing impact. Indeed, governed by the Bernoulli Effect, you can improve air blow thrust by 10%.

We recently saw this in action at a customer producing liquid detergent. The company’s bottle un-scrambler machine housed 25 air nozzles from an SMC competitor, costing €22,441 in annual air consumption. After application analysis we recommended that the customer adopt our high-efficiency nozzles. These products could provide the same blowing performance (flow and impact force), but with a lower nozzle diameter - thus allowing lower inlet pressure. Reduced air consumption led to savings of €6,183 a year, delivering amortisation in just 1.57 months. Performing the same replacement process on six further lines led to total annual savings of €37,098.

SMC’s firm commitment to 4 bar is also visible with our vacuum units, which actually function at their best (maximum efficiency) when using low operating pressure. At 4 bar, we ensure the vacuum pressure necessary to hold the component or product securely. Beyond this pressure, air (and money) is simply wasted and the vacuum unit loses efficiency. By turning up the pressure, you are not getting more force or speed, just more inefficiency.

Regulate to accumulate.
As regulators handle point-of-use pressure they can be good collaborators in the 4 bar journey, largely because we can use them to reduce the pressure even further at points where it’s possible. This might include air blow or vacuum applications, endowing the machine with even more energy efficiency. Every little helps.

Monitoring the pressure.
Although a pressure switch plays no direct role in the 4 bar concept, it can prove beneficial in the long run. For instance, when designing a machine for 4 bar, you need to monitor pressure as the margin is low. In the first instance, pressure monitoring acts as a control measure for the machine to receive the 4 bar it needs. Secondly, pressure switches can monitor air consumption and identify any pressure losses. Air leakage is something that no machine can afford, especially at 4 bar.

The 4 bar future.
OEMs should propose that end users adopt machinery which operates at 4 bar in order to stay competitive. To help expedite a project that involves designing a machine for this operating pressure, SMC’s expert team can deliver the optimal outcome for both OEMs and end users. Through early project engagement we can provide the correct sizing for each pneumatic component and ensure it consumes less energy without compromising machine performance. In addition, we can deliver solutions with minimal impact on surrounding or connecting components, thus avoiding any unnecessary time and cost for redesigns. Retrofit projects also benefit from this approach.

Greater connectivity, maintainability and flexibility for actuators.

Thomson Industries has announced the availability of the CANopen industrial networking protocol as an option for its line of heavy duty Electrak HD electric actuators. Designers of linear motion systems requiring up to 16 kN load handling can now enjoy the cost savings and flexibility of this CAN bus standard.

“Many of our customers are seeking to reduce costs and gain flexibility by integrating their motion systems into higher-level, open automation strategies and have asked us to support CANopen. We are pleased to announce that we are now offering both CANopen and SAE J1939 capabilities for our popular Electrak HD actuators,” said Anders Karlsson, Product Line Specialist – Linear Actuators at Thomson.

CANopen is an open industrial integration protocol built on the Controller Automation Network (CAN). Originally developed for industrial systems,it is increasingly becoming the protocol of choice for factory automation systems, most notably AGVs and PLC-controlled material handling systems.

CANopen offers all of the functionality of SAE J1939, another protocol built on the CAN network bus, but uses an independent standard platform that enables plug and play integration with other standard devices. This makes it possible to integrate motion into other, higher-level automation schemes.

In addition to simplifying connectivity, CANopen enables users to finely control the motion of a linear component using programmable parameterssuch as distance travelled, temperature and speed. Programs can provide data, which can help diagnose problems, signal maintenance alarms, improve quality control and optimize operations.

Taking full advantage of the CANopen data handling capabilities are the onboard electronics embedded in the Thomson Electrak HD actuator, which eliminate the need for standalone controls. This smart electric actuator offers an intelligent, powerful and compact alternative to hydraulic systems. In addition to load handling up to 16 kN, the Electrak HD provides up to 1 meter of stroke, up to 75 mm/s of speed and high environmental resistance, including IP69K.

ThomsonElectrak HD linear actuators with CANopen are available immediately and are compliant with specification 301 published by the CAN in Automation (CiA) standards body. Additional Thomson electric actuator models are being considered for future implementation.

Electro-hydraulic actuators.

Thomson Industries has introduced an electro-hydraulic actuator that has the strength of hydraulic cylinders but without their complex external assemblies or extensive fluid handling requirements. Thomson Warner Linear H-Track actuators move loads of up to 21350 N (4800 pounds) from a compact mounting envelope. The actuators are ideal for space-constrained applications requiring high load handling and shock resistance, such as snowplough blade control, agricultural ploughs and sprayer booms, mower deck lifts, and UTV dump boxes.

“Specifying solutions for applications requiring high force in a compact space is now possible, while still realising the benefits of an electrically driven actuator,” said Anders Karlsson – Product Specialist Linear Actuators for Thomson. “With our unique reservoir design and pump configuration, we have miniaturized a hydraulic system and embedded it into a package that is even smaller than a ball screw-style electromechanical system. The result is a compact, electro-hydraulic actuator rated for heavy loads and capable of withstanding large amounts of shock loading with fluid-powered actuation that cushions the actuator components.”

High force density and shock resistance
Hydraulic cylinder-based systems require a complex assembly of hoses, pumps, valves and reservoirs. This infrastructure can be costly to install, operate and maintain, and the fluid itself requires careful handling. Thomson Warner Linear H-Track actuators resolve this issue with a miniaturised hydraulic pump that is powered by a DC motor. The pump, cylinder and reservoir are a single unit that fits into a small housing about the size of a screw-type actuator. This hybrid actuator has a force rating of 21 kN (4800 lbf) and can achieve travel speeds of nearly 100 mm (4 in) per second. Users can select between motors and pumps to optimize for higher load capacity or higher speed than can typically be attained with ball screw-based designs.

Using hydraulic power to create linear motion also has a cushioning effect that enables the system to absorb shock load that might otherwise bend the ball screw or the extension tube, especially if the shock load occurred while the actuator was extended.

High configuration flexibility
The ability to configure multiple pump and cylinder sizes enables Thomson to create H-Track iterations with various levels of speed and load capacity. Its exclusive pumping and reservoir architecture minimizes components and optimises the volume/pressure differential. A patented split-tank shuttle valve with back pressure relief adds further efficiencies. Other H-Track features include:
  • Bore and rod combinations that allow for multiple configurations.
  • Stroke lengths up to 406 mm (16 in) with solid rods allow for increased resistance to buckling.
  • A pin-to-pin length shorter than traditional electromechanical actuators.
  • Immunity to vibrational drifting; hydraulic self-locking.
  • Protection from load runaway by installing meter-out circuits on one or both sides of the actuator.
  • A cover-tube reservoir that cools the fluid.
  • A flexible lid on a vented, isolated reservoir, which allows for actuator and pump operation in any orientation without entraining air or cavitation.
Numerous applications
The Thomson Warner Linear H-Track actuator is ideal for space-constrained applications that would usually use a screw-type actuator but would benefit from higher force handling, speeds or tolerance to shock loading. It is also ideal for applications that typically use hydraulic cylinders but in which the external pump and hose assemblies are consuming too much space or requiring too much maintenance. Following are some typical H-Track applications:
  • Snowploughing — preventing bending of ball screw, extension tube or gearing if the plough collides with a hidden concrete obstacle while the actuator is fully extended.
  • Agricultural plough depth control — controlling depth of blade penetration to optimize the placement of seeds from automatic seeders.
  • Larger agricultural sprayer transport — protecting from overload on actuators used to fold larger sprayer booms for transport.
  • Mower deck lifts — improving control of increasingly larger mower decks.
Electro-hydraulic actuators are also being used in a wide variety of other applications as well, including turf care, lawn and gardening, marine hatch lifts, industrial pallet lifts, UTV tailgate locks and dump boxes, and construction quick-attach bucket releases.

Hollow shaft rotary actuators.

The new HLMT series hollow shaft rotary actuators from JVL A/S take a novel approach to decentralised precision positioning tasks on rotary tables and automated machines where a through aperture is required for routing services or maintaining a clear line of site. Available in the Britain from Mclennan the design features an offset motor mounting in five model variants with clear through-hole diameters from 20 to 30 mm and rated torque output of 5 to 142 Nm. The actuators are used with JVL’s MAC motor® and ServoStep® integrated servo and stepper motors or with other manufacturers motors in NEMA 17, 23 and 34 frame sizes.

The HLMT includes a comprehensive choice of options making installation straightforward and cost-effective. These include built-in absolute encoders for positioning accuracy to +/- 10 arc-sec and lost motion to 2 arc-min. Built-in home (datum) sensors are also available and standard or crossed-roller bearings options suit standard or heavy duty axial and radial rigidity requirements (axial load to 800 N on the largest model). Gear ratios available are 5, 10 or 18:1 with higher ratios on request.

With its inherent high torque, axial load capability, low run-out and platform parallelism the HLMT series is particularly suited to rotary table applications but will also suit machine set-ups where slip rings, electrical wiring, rotary fluidpower joints or laser line-of-sight needs to be routed for moving to stationary platforms. The durable geared actuator meets the IP65 protection class, as does many of the JVL integrated motors.

The product depth and flexibility of JVL’s range of integrated servo and stepper motor allows almost any choice of machine control interfacing with the added benefit of decentralised control for reduced installation and wiring. With no need for control cabinets, decentralised control can yield tangible cost and time savings. Control options cover individual or multi-axis stand-alone motion control with step and direction or analogue +/- 10 VDC inputs. JVL’s own ‘point & click’ graphical programming is also available across all its integrated motors. For MAC® series integrated servomotors, the control options extend to a wide choice of Industrial Ethernet or other common protocols including CANopen, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT. POWERLINK and more. Wireless Bluetooth, WLAN and Zigbee systems are also available. The HLMT series may be purchased for use with third-party stepper and servomotors of choice, allowing the option to build through-hole rotary actuators with the customer’s preferred motor/motion controls supplier.

Linear actuators.

With the recently announced increase in maximum dynamic load from 10 kN to 16 kN for stroke lengths to 500 mm, and with static loads to 18 kN, Thomson’s Electrak® HD series linear actuators are now an even more compelling alternative to hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders for positioning tasks on heavy-duty machinery and equipment.

Available in Britain, with full support from Heason Technology, the Electrak HD range covers six load-rated models with stroke lengths from 100 mm to 1 metre (in 50 mm increments). With 12 or 24 VDC operation, a wide choice of built-in control options include J1939 CANbus, open or closed loop positioning, analogue and digital position output, axis synchronisation and PLC compatibility. These combine with a comprehensive choice of mechanical interfacing options to make application integration and operation straightforward.

The Electrak HD series has a smaller footprint, requires much less maintenance and is a much cleaner solution than hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder alternatives. In addition, its superior controllability offers easier integration with modern computer controlled systems and more precise positioning control.

The actuators also offer a durability that will suit the harshest environments, with IP67 rating for static use and IP66 for dynamic positioning as standard. An IP69K version is available for the food industry and other automation tasks where frequent washdown is required. The Electrak HD series will operate at high loads in temperatures ranging from -40 to +85 °C. For maximum loads, a generous 25% duty cycle ensures operation for demanding high-throughput positioning tasks.

Safety is available via thermal and voltage or current load protection with end-of-stroke limit switches, manual (mechanical) override and integrated motor-brake for complete safeguarding.

The robust Electrak HD design is well proven in a wide range of applications in automotive, agricultural and construction equipment where the industry standard J1939 CANbus control network is well established. A high-efficiency ball screw system with parallel mounted motor and gear components are housed in a robust hard-coat anodised aluminium housing. Internally the motor and gear unit are housed in a zinc frame providing extra protection. The stainless steel anti-rotation extension tube is fully sealed inside the housing and a wide choice of mechanical interfacing options include rod-end and threaded adapters for straightforward mounting.

Smart actuators.

Thomson Industries has released an educational video that summarises the benefits of smart actuators, which feature integrated electronics. The five-minute video explores how smart electromechanical actuators are meeting demands for greater connectivity, application flexibility and cost efficiency, and illustrates their use in factories, on- and off-highway vehicles, and structural automation.
In discussing the benefits of smart actuators, Håkan Persson, Global Product Line Director – Thomson Actuators, states: “Smart actuators help OEM design engineers build smarter machines with smarter components. Their onboard electronics perform traditionally external control functions such as switching, position feedback, system diagnostics and communications. Embedding these into the actuator housing reduces component cost, installation cost and design labor that might otherwise be needed. This, coupled with concurrent advances in power density and environmental protection, allows design engineers to electrify more axes of motion than previously thought possible, putting actuators on the frontlines of Industry 4.0.”

Actuators for resistance spot welding (RSW) applications.

New ServoWeld® actuators from Tolomatic are redesigned for higher performance and are lighter weight compared to other screw technologies. Featuring roller screws designed and manufactured by Tolomatic, the ServoWeld actuators are made especially for resistance spot welding (RSW) applications in the automotive industry. The ServoWeld actuators deliver 20 million welds or more, much longer than competing technologies such as ball screws and inverted roller screw actuators, according to Tolomatic.

“We developed the ServoWeld SWA and SWB actuators based on nearly 15 years of experience in the industry, and we understand what it takes to make actuators and roller screws for resistance spot welding applications,” said Bill Graber, ServoWeld global business director, Tolomatic. “The result of our efforts is the broadest line of 7th axis RSW actuator products, which allow our customers to select the right ServoWeld product for their application.”

The ServoWeld Advanced (SWA) actuator is based on the highest level roller screw technology available to deliver the maximum number of welds. The ServoWeld Base (SWB) actuator is built on an alternate roller screw design to provide longer life than typical ball screw and inverted roller screw technology, but at a more economical price than the SWA actuator.

The SWA and SWB ServoWeld models are available in two sizes: a smaller size 3 for lighter-duty weld schedules; and a size 4 for heavier-duty applications. Both sizes are available in a variety of roller screw thread pitches (5mm and 10mm), motor voltages (230Vac & 460Vac) and multiple options for rod ends, feedback & connectors, and water cooling. These models can produce actuator forces at the rod up to 4,000 lbf/17.8 kN, lasting 20+ million welds and holding +- 3% force repeatability over the life of the actuator. Each model comes equipped as standard with a re-lubrication port to easily service the actuator without disassembly from the weld gun to maximize its life.

• Tolomatic has extensive experience in the automotive resistance spot welding industry with its predecessor product, the GSWA ServoWeld actuator. Because of this experience, the ServoWeld SWA and SWB actuators have motor files for seamless robot integration with all the major suppliers including ABB, Comau, Fanuc, Kawasaki, Kuka, Motoman, Nachi and many more.

Synchronising multiple actuators.

Thomson Industries has released an educational video that demonstrates how design engineers can synchronise multiple Thomson WhisperTrak actuators quickly and easily. These products are exceptionally quiet and boast a low sound level of less than 45 dBa, the same as an average library.

Click on image to see short video!
“Once the actuators are installed and fully retracted, you only need a Thomson control that will automatically synchronise the units,” said Chad Carlberg, Product Line Manager for Linear Actuators at Thomson. “Simply press the extend button and the combined actuators will extend together.”

In the video, Carlberg also explains that the units can be ordered with and require a Thomson digital feedback option, which allows for the synchronisation of two or four units.

Thomson WhisperTrak linear actuators are designed to enable machine builders with greater flexibility for a wide range of applications, including personal mobility, medical, rehabilitation, office and residential automation. The actuators include an IP67 environmental rating and are able to operate in harsh conditions where they are exposed to washdown, rain and dust without the use of an additional cover. The solution is maintenance free and has an average life of 10,000 cycles at the maximum load capacity.

How to customize a base model electric linear actuator.

Thomson Industries has released an educational video that offers design engineers advice and best practice tips on how to properly customise a base model electric linear actuator for a specific application.
“Linear actuators are packaged systems optimised for power density, size and performance, which means thrust, speed and life,” said Chad Carlberg, Product Line Manager for Linear Actuators at Thomson. “Base unit electric linear actuators use a specific motor paired with a set of gears in a gear housing, which is connected to a ball or acme screw assembly to convert rotary motion into linear motion.”

In the video, Carlberg describes the customisation of Thomson units, stating, “Each base model can be customised for a specified application. Gear ratios, motors and screw assemblies can be modular and matched up to provide an optimised, flexible solution.”

Thomson’s industrial linear actuators are designed to save a design engineer time and money through reduced maintenance, quick and easy installation, and by delivering superior performance. The Electrak product family provides robust, reliable performance with up to an IP69k environmental rating making them ideally suited for harsh environments.

Switching from pneumatic to electric actuation.

Thomson Industries has helped Danish fabrics plasticator, Raaco International, achieve lower annual energy costs of 89% by switching to Thomson’s new generation electric linear actuators, the PC Series™, at its plastic welding and injection moulding factory in Denmark.

Pneumatic cylinders are susceptible to pressure loss and leakage and Raaco needed an alternative to increase performance and reduce energy costs. It turned to Thomson’s authorised Danish distributor, AVN Teknik to explore the option of switching to an electromechanical solution. “We estimated that Raaco was losing nearly a third of its compression between the compressor and the point of actuation,” said Flemming Blauert, Product Specialist at AVN Teknik.

Utilising a Thomson-supplied sizing and calculation tool, Blauert found that the electromechanical actuators offered an 80% efficiency rate compared to just 15% for their pneumatic counterparts. A total cost saving of 613 euros a year per cylinder showed that the PC Series would be able to pay for themselves within three years in energy savings alone. A test installation of the Thomson’s PC SeriesTM showed further evidence of improvements in performance, productivity and savings. The electromechanical actuators proved to be three times faster than their pneumatic predecessors and required less maintenance. Raaco expected downtime during the transition of up to two days but the process went so smoothly that the actuators were working as intended in a couple of hours.

Convinced by the potential value that resulted from the test on a key injection moulding application, Raaco has ordered electromechanical replacements for its pneumatic cylinders on all of its injection moulding line and is evaluating application opportunities throughout the rest of its plant. Energy savings, speed, and reduced maintenance were the key factors in Raaco’s decision to convert to Thomson’s PC SeriesTM electric linear actuators.

Thomson’s new generation, PC SeriesTM electric actuators are optimised to help design engineers convert from pneumatic to electric linear actuation. The units require less maintenance, simplify machine design, offer significant cost savings and are ideal for 100% duty cycle applications that require high accuracy and reliability.

Cost effective and simple motion control.

Festo has added three new actuators to its Optimised Motion Series (OMS) of electrical positioning systems. These cost-effective and simple-to-use products have been designed to allow machine builders and system integrators to improve both motion control and their profit margins for solutions such as light assembly applications, baggage inspection systems and handling of liquids and specimen in the laboratory.

EPCO-G - guided EPCO electric cylinder
• The first new product is the guided EPCO electric cylinder – EPCO-G – which provides simple positioning with strokes of up to 400mm. With an integrated guide unit, EPCO-G can withstand high axial and radial loads which means it can be utilised in a wider selection of handling systems.

The cylinder is available in three sizes (16, 25 and 40), it can achieve speeds up to 500 mm/s and it provides high stiffness in a low weight system, giving high performance over a long service life. Furthermore, it has a life-time lubrication which means it is maintenance-free. Mounting and installation are also exceptionally easy meaning that engineers can save time and costs associated with set up and maintenance. The guide unit can also be ordered as a single unit for easy retrofitting to existing EPCO cylinders.

ERMO – electric rotary drive
• The second new addition to the OMS product family is the ERMO – an electric rotary drive that meets the same high performance criteria as Festo’s previous rotary drives but at a more attractive price. Ideal for compact process stations and pick and place applications due to its angle flexibility and rotation capabilities, the ERMO is easy to commission allowing machine builders to ‘plug and work’ instantly.

With a maximum angular velocity of 600°/sec, torque of 5 Nm and repetition accuracy of between ± 0.05° and ± 0.1°, the ERMO electric rotary drive can be used for a range of rotating, placing, turning and pivot drive handling systems.

“The large diameter of the bearing allows for high offset loads to be carried reliably, and centre thru’ holes allows cables and tubing to be added with ease. The ERMO has the same interface as a pneumatic rotary actuator, meaning all parts can be assembled seamlessly, saving both time and money for machine builders and engineers implementing new systems,” says Nigel Dawson, electric drives product manager at Festo.

EPCO combination with ERMO
• Finally, the ELGR linear belt drive axis is now available with a highly corrosion resistant chrome rod and bearing material, meaning it provides a reliable and robust solution in more arduous environments. The ELGR is an exceptionally cost-effective solution for feedforces upto 35kg and is available as a completely mounted sub assembly enabling machine builders to save time and costs with commissioning and set up. A cost effective motor package also comes as part of the axis, making this an ideal system for a wide variety of handling applications, where simple linear movements are required.

All products in the OMS product family can be easily mounted together to create a complete 2, 3 or 4 axis handling system which can be best adapted for each user’s individual requirements, enabling them to build efficient and reliable machines.

“These three OMS additions open up the market between pneumatic actuators and electric drives. Combining the simplicity of pneumatics with the quality performance of electric drives, engineers across many industries can enjoy a range of benefits. These products are all simple to commission, requiring no special software, and can be delivered together with one single part number, making the ordering and delivery process a simple one for all involved."
