Smart energy stadium.

Open, scalable systems integrate with the stadium's existing infrastructure – avoiding a costly rebuild while supporting more than 81,000 fans on matchday.

ABB becoming Borussia Dortmund (BVB) Energy Management Partner, building on years of continued technological collaboration at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. Together, the two organisations are transforming Germany's largest football stadium into a showcase for smart energy management, resilient electrification and intelligent building automation – developing a scalable approach in one of the world's most complex and operationally demanding venues.

Every matchday, more than 81,000 fans transform SIGNAL IDUNA PARK into one of football's most electrifying venues. Home to Borussia Dortmund's famous 'Yellow Wall' – Europe's largest standing terrace – SIGNAL IDUNA PARK has hosted Bundesliga, Champions League, World Cup and European Championship matches, making it one of the most iconic stadiums in world football. Behind the scenes, another kind of performance makes that experience possible: the intelligent management of energy, electrical infrastructure and building systems.

Few environments test infrastructure more intensely than a football stadium. Within hours, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK shifts from everyday operation to serving supporters, broadcasters, hospitality areas, security systems and other critical services. Energy demand can rise sharply from near-zero to peak megawatt levels while operational continuity remains non-negotiable.

LtoR: Carsten Cramer, Benedikt Scholz, BVD; Mark Zwerner, ABB; Dr. Stefan Rohrmoser, ABB; Dr. Frederic Nimmermann, ABB; Thomas Baltzer, ABB and Dr. Christian Hockenjos, BVD.

"Thousands of people come together to create something extraordinary at Signal Iduna Park," Dr. Christian Hockenjos, Director of Organisation & Managing Director BVB Stadium Management GmbH, said. "With ABB, we have a partner that shares our ambition to continuously improve performance – not only on the pitch, but throughout the infrastructure behind it. Building on our existing collaboration, we want to set new standards for efficient and future-ready stadium operations."

Unlike a new-build stadium designed from scratch, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is an established venue whose infrastructure has grown and evolved over decades. Originally opened in 1974, the stadium demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be retrofitted through electrification – a challenge relevant across many building types, industries and public infrastructure.

Borussia Dortmund was the first Bundesliga club with climate goals validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The club also operates the world's most powerful photovoltaic system on a football stadium roof, with an installed capacity of up to 5 MWp – a commitment advancing further with a 3.75 MWh battery storage system planned before year-end.

Over the past years, Borussia Dortmund and ABB have worked together to modernise the stadium’s electrical infrastructure, KNX-based building automation, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and energy management systems. This work builds on SIGNAL IDUNA PARK's ISO 50001-certified energy management system, which provides a structured and independently validated framework for monitoring, measuring and continuously improving energy performance. As “Energy Management Partner,” ABB will now build on this foundation to further optimise energy use, increase operational transparency, and support Borussia Dortmund's continuous improvement of energy performance.

Central to the approach is an open, scalable architecture that integrates with existing systems and can expand across the wider BVB portfolio, from the Dortmund-Brackel training ground and academy to BVB FanWelt and future EV charging infrastructure. What is being developed at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not just relevant for the world’s most demanding live venues, but for the modernisation of complex existing buildings everywhere.

"Our partnership with ABB demonstrates how a long-standing collaboration can lead to concrete solutions that deliver strategic value for both sides. Together, we are making Signal Iduna Park more efficient and future-proof," says Benedikt Scholz, Director Internationalisation & Commercial Partnerships at BVB.

"Signal Iduna Park combines the demands of critical infrastructure with the complexity of a building that has evolved over decades,” said Mark Zwerner, VP Strategic Partnerships at ABB. “By bringing together electrification, energy management and building automation through an open, scalable architecture, we can help Borussia Dortmund improve performance while maintaining reliable operations. What we prove here can provide a blueprint for complex buildings far beyond football."

This partnership brings together two organisations committed to demonstrating that energy efficiency, operational performance and long-term resilience go hand in hand. ABB's mission to help buildings become more energy-efficient, connected and future-ready – combined with Borussia Dortmund's SBTi-validated climate targets and experience operating one of Europe's most complex and most visited properties – sets a new standard for what's possible in demanding, real-world environments.

Low voltage grid status.

The true state of the Low-Voltage Grid - turning feeder data into actionable grid intelligence.

Corinex has announced the launch of the Grid Intelligence Node (GIN), bringing near-real-time measurement and event detection to low-voltage feeders. GIN provides high-precision insight into actual network conditions, creating a grid-truth layer that helps distribution system operators identify constraints, assess available capacity and verify whether grid actions delivered the intended result.

GIN combines high-performance broadband powerline communications with integrated current, voltage, and power-quality monitoring. Installed in secondary substations, street cabinets, and lateral branches, it gives utilities a clearer view of loading and operating conditions across the low-voltage network.

"Electrification is placing new demands on low-voltage grids, but utilities lack the information needed to see or predict where constraints are emerging," said Sam Shi, Chief Technology Officer at Corinex. "GIN tells the DSO when, where and how much control is needed. It provides the evidence for intervention."

Key technical capabilities include:

  • Three-phase voltage and current measurement with RMS error ≤0.5%
  • Measurement of power, power factor, frequency and energy
  • Harmonic monitoring up to the 51st harmonic and total harmonic distortion
  • Detection of voltage sags and swells, overloads and phase imbalance
  • One-minute operational snapshots, 15-minute energy aggregates and optional one-second reporting
  • Support for split-core CT or Rogowski coil sensors
  • Direct connection to 230/400 V networks and MQTT data transmission
  • An operating temperature range of −25°C to +70°C, with an IP67-rated enclosure option

The node combines high-precision metering for secondary substations with BPL communications, allowing feeder-level measurements and power-quality data to be transmitted through the existing low-voltage network. Monitoring up to the 51st harmonic, alongside the detection of voltage sags and swells, overloads and phase imbalance, helps utilities identify operational issues where they emerge and verify the impact of grid interventions.

Building more accurate digital twins.
GIN measurements can feed directly into Corinex Plexigrid Intelligence, connecting near-real-time field data with advanced grid modelling and optimization.

Corinex technology observes conditions across the physical grid, while Plexigrid software reconstructs, models and optimizes the network. Together, they give DSOs a digital representation that more closely reflects actual loading, voltage and power-quality conditions.

This enhanced digital twin helps utilities:

  • Improve low-voltage state estimation and grid model accuracy.
  • Assess available capacity for electric vehicles, heat pumps, and photovoltaic systems.
  • Determine whether constraints should be addressed through flexibility or physical reinforcement.

The result is greater certainty about grid assets and operating conditions, with less reliance on planning assumptions, delayed meter data, and estimated load profiles.

"Digital twins are only as reliable as the information behind them," Shi added. "GIN grounds the model in near-real-time measurements from the physical grid, helping utilities understand available capacity and make better-informed decisions as electrification grows."

Add intelligence without rebuilding the network.
GIN gives utilities a practical way to expand low-voltage visibility through infrastructure already in place. Designed for retrofit installations, it combines Corinex BPL repeater and Ethernet functionality while adding advanced measurement and event detection.

Existing low-voltage power lines carry both communications and measurement data. GridValue™ manages the Corinex BPL network and connected devices, while measurement data can support Corinex Plexigrid Intelligence, ADMS, SCADA and other digital-grid platforms. Utilities can gain a clearer view of network conditions without deploying a separate communications layer or installing revenue-grade meters at every monitoring point.

Its compact, IP67-rated enclosure is designed for demanding grid environments, while split-core current transformer and Rogowski coil options support different conductor sizes and cabinet layouts. GIN provides one-minute operational snapshots and 15-minute energy aggregates, with integration through Ethernet, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP.

The Corinex Grid Intelligence Node is available for utility evaluations, pilot projects, and commercial deployments.

Cybersecurity in Energy.

“Cybersecurity is integral across the oil and gas value chain, for securing data, safeguarding asset integrity, and preventing financial losses.”

Energy infrastructure is a high-value target for cybercriminals. Attacks on critical national infrastructure (CNI) can have an outsized impact, disrupting essential services, causing nationwide instability, and generating financial gains for hackers. As geopolitical uncertainty intensifies, so does cyber espionage, making it crucial for energy companies to invest in resilient cybersecurity programs, says GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.

L GlobalData’s Strategic Intelligence report, “Cybersecurity in Energy,” highlights how cybersecurity impacts key challenges in the energy industry. These include digitalization, distributed energy resources (DERs), grid modernization, supply chains, third-party vendors, and geopolitics.

Ravindra Puranik, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Energy companies depend on extensive third-party ecosystems, making supplier vulnerabilities a major cyber risk that can spread into IT and OT environments. Attacks exploiting shared vendor software (e.g., file-transfer tools) have hit major players.”

“Mitigation requires stronger vendor governance, such as continuous monitoring, standards, segmentation, least privilege, audits, and joint incident response.”

GlobalData notes that digitization and the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) are connecting legacy assets and modern grid technologies, expanding entry points where IT compromises can disrupt operations. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) further increases attacker speed and sophistication, shrinking defenders’ response windows.

Puranik concludes: “Oil and gas firms should invest in specialized cybersecurity services that provide continuous monitoring and rapid response, expert validation, and strong operational readiness. Equipment and oilfield service providers should also add product-focused services such as secure development support and security audits/certification to reduce supply chain risk and maintain customer trust.

“Cybersecurity is integral across the oil and gas value chain, for securing data, safeguarding asset integrity, and preventing financial losses.”

Mission to zero progress.

Electrified, energy-efficient production upgrades improve energy productivity while strengthening operational stability .

ABB is advancing its Mission to Zero™ program at its Sasbach manufacturing site in Germany, demonstrating how on-site renewable energy, electrification and digital energy management can deliver meaningful emissions reductions while strengthening energy resilience.

The Sasbach site manufactures enclosures and energy distribution systems for local and regional markets, supporting ABB’s production footprint in Germany. As part of ABB’s global Mission to Zero™ program, the site is implementing a data-led decarbonization roadmap focused on energy efficiency, renewable electricity and smart energy management. Sasbach is one of 37 ABB sites worldwide currently participating in the program, which aims to significantly reduce operational emissions across ABB’s global footprint.

With manufacturing and production accounting for around one-fifth of global carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and accelerating electrification are critical to achieving European climate targets. The Sasbach site shows how manufacturers can reduce emissions while maintaining reliable, competitive operations.

Taken together, the actions implemented at the Sasbach site deliver total CO₂ savings of approximately 3,786 tons. This includes around 2,700 tons of CO₂ savings from the purchase of certified renewable electricity from the grid, alongside annual emissions reductions of approximately 1,086 tons of CO₂ delivered through on-site measures. Of these yearly on-site savings, around 550 tons of CO₂ per year come from on-site solar generation, which has been expanded. The site now operates 3,410 photovoltaic modules, generating around 1,500 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. This is enough to supply approximately 400 homes for a year.

On-site generation will cover close to one-third of the site’s total electricity demand, reducing exposure to volatile energy prices and enhancing long-term energy security. A newly installed transformer station ensures stable and efficient integration of the renewable electricity into the site’s power infrastructure. The remaining reductions are achieved through electrified production upgrades, energy efficiency measures, and digital energy management. Together, these actions are strengthening energy resilience and supporting stable, reliable day-to-day operations.

ABB's Sasbach Plant.
“What we are doing at Sasbach shows how Mission to Zero™ works in practice,” said Mike Mustapha, President, ABB Electrification’s Smart Buildings Division. “By investing in on-site renewables, electrifying our processes and using digital energy management, the site is reducing emissions while also improving energy resilience and day-to-day operational stability. This kind of practical progress is what will matter most for manufacturers navigating the energy transition.”

In parallel, ABB has continued to modernize production processes to reduce energy demand at source. A new powder-coating facility has expanded production capacity while significantly lowering energy requirements. Designed across two levels, the facility incorporates heat recovery and operates with substantially lower installed heating capacity than conventional systems, supporting both efficiency gains and production reliability.

Additional efficiency measures across the site include full LED lighting in production areas, building automation via the ABB i-bus® KNX, waste heat recovery from compressed air systems, and optimized process controls. Twenty-one onsite electric vehicle (EV) charging stations support low-emission mobility for employees and visitors.

Together, these initiatives have significantly improved energy productivity compared with 2019 levels, while helping stabilize operations and reduce operating costs. ABB's Building Automation System (BMS) and energy management solutions bring these measures together, providing real-time visibility into energy use and enabling continuous improvement and data-driven decision-making that supports efficiency, resilience, and operational stability.

Building on these achievements, ABB has defined a clear roadmap for the next phase of decarbonization at Sasbach. Battery storage systems are planned to store excess solar electricity and support production during peak demand and night shifts. Gas-based heating systems are being progressively replaced with electric heat-pump solutions, reducing reliance on fossil fuels over time. The site is also evaluating the potential for on-site wind generation to further strengthen energy self-sufficiency in the future.

The Sasbach site joins ABB’s growing global network of Mission to Zero™ locations spanning Europe, the Americas and Asia. Mission to Zero™ began as a local initiative at ABB’s Lüdenscheid factory in Germany and has since scaled globally. Together, Mission to Zero™ sites are already reducing more than 60,000 tons of CO2e emissions from our operations per year, demonstrating how electrification, digitalization and energy efficiency can deliver measurable progress toward low-carbon manufacturing.

Through continued investment in renewable electricity, electrified processes, and smart energy management, ABB’s Sasbach site is becoming a future-ready manufacturing location that combines environmental responsibility with strong operational performance, supporting a more resilient and efficient industrial base for the region.

Excellence in energy efficiency.

Wisconsin state energy efficiency program recognises foundry for outstanding commitment to saving energy

Emerson's Appleton Group iron casting facility has received a 2025 Energy Excellence Award from Focus on Energy®. The award recognizes companies in that US state that go above and beyond basic energy efficiency solutions, both within their own organizations and those they support. As one of 11 recipients, the South Milwaukee foundry proves how energy-efficient industrial facilities can reduce costs, contribute to a healthier environment and strengthen local economies.

“Emerson's foundry shows that even energy-intensive operations can be leaders in energy efficiency,” said Erin Soman, managing director of Focus on Energy. “This award isn’t just about saving energy – it’s about people coming together to think differently about how we use energy and what that means for Wisconsin’s future.”

LtoR: Doug Presny, CleanTech Partners; Joe Pater, Wisconsin Public Service Commission; Paul Kling, Focus on Energy; John Schuster, Emerson; Bob Axtell, Emerson; Bill Bolhuis, Franklin Energy; Chris Larson, Chris Jansen, Wisconsin State Senator, District 7; Jim Garbowski, WEC Energy Group.
Focus on Energy is the statewide energy efficiency and renewable energy program for businesses and residents in Wisconsin. It offers a range of rebates and incentives for energy-saving technologies as well as services that help organizations reduce energy use and costs.

The Appleton foundry, which manufactures electrical fittings, enclosures and other cast products for electrical infrastructure, has worked with the Focus on Energy initiative since 2017. In that time, the partnership has made it possible for the foundry to identify, evaluate, design and implement many successful energy efficiency and utility cost-savings projects.

These updates include new controls on its makeup air units, the replacement of channel furnaces with cordless induction melting furnaces and the replacement of over 800 fluorescent lights with Appleton industrial LED fixtures. Combined, the energy improvements save the facility over 10,000 megawatt-hours (MWh), 65,000 million British thermal units (MMBtu) and $1 million in energy costs annually. The team also identified nearly $350,000 in energy-related incentives throughout this period.

The foundry team’s commitment to optimizing energy efficiency has cut the facility’s total energy consumption and emissions by about a third since 2017, drastically reducing its own emissions and operating expenses. These reductions are especially significant given that the century-old foundry had been among the largest energy-consuming facilities across all of Emerson.

“The Energy Efficiency Excellence award highlights the dedication of our team to improve our own environmental impact, support our cost reductions in Wisconsin’s energy system and work with external organizations to move toward a more sustainable future,” said John Schuster, plant manager at Emerson’s discrete automation business. “What we've achieved in South Milwaukee is a success story for the Emerson portfolio, as well as for the castings industry overall. It’s an honor to be acknowledged in this way.”

Innovative BMS at foundry recognised.

Plant recognised for cutting natural gas usage by 20% with an innovative building management system (BMS).

Emerson was recognised with the 2025 Better Project Award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Better Plants Summit last month. The award highlights the company's success in achieving significant heating and energy savings with a new building management system at its South Milwaukee foundry.

The foundry, which manufactures electrical fittings, enclosures and other cast products for electrical infrastructure under the Appleton Group brand, has historically been one of the largest energy-consuming operations within the Emerson portfolio. By implementing a new BMS to optimize comfort heating at the site, Emerson was able to reduce natural gas consumption by 20%, nearly 13,000 MMBtu, and mitigate 9% of the foundry’s entire emissions footprint.

Zion Taylor, sustainable energy analyst, Emerson; Mike Barkan, sustainable energy analyst, Emerson; Paulomi Nandy, better buildings, technical account manager, Department of Energy

“At our foundry, we’ve built a legacy of innovation and continuous improvement to deliver best-in-class solutions for our customers across industries,” said John Schuster, foundry plant manager with Emerson’s discrete automation business. “That same dedication drives our efforts to minimise our environmental impact. Receiving this recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy affirms our progress in creating a more energy-efficient future.”

The Emerson foundry was among 16 other plants to receive the Better Project Award in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in energy efficiency. The DOE’s Better Plants Program works with leading U.S. manufacturers and commercial building operators to set ambitious energy, water, waste and emissions reduction goals. By partnering with industries, the program aims to help leading manufacturers boost efficiency, increase resilience and strengthen economic competitiveness.

The new BMS now enables precise control and monitoring of comfort heating and cooling systems. By optimising this equipment, the facility has substantially reduced both gas and electricity usage by eliminating long periods of overheating that were accentuated by radiant heat from foundry operations, and by reducing temperature setpoints outside of operational hours.

This project was supported by Focus on Energy®, Wisconsin utilities’ statewide program for energy efficiency, which provided technical oversight of project scoping and system design. Focus on Energy also helped the foundry capitalise on a custom utility project grant that greatly boosted project economics, saving ratepayers money by mitigating the cost of future infrastructure buildout.

The BMS helped Emerson realise $127,000 year-over-year savings in natural gas costs at a net project cost of $118,000, resulting in an effective payback period of under one year. The solution also reduced total site energy consumption by 10%, from 130,000 1,000,000 British thermal units (MMBtu) to 117,000 MMBtu.

“By optimising our use of heating energy at our South Milwaukee site, we’ve greatly reduced energy cost, providing a competitive edge to American production of iron castings while also driving a significant reduction in Emerson’s difficult-to-abate scope 1 emissions footprint,” said Schuster. “Now, we’re able to more efficiently and effectively serve our customers with trusted Appleton solutions that make electrical installations safer, more productive and more reliable.”

The Appleton brand includes a broad range of rugged electrical solutions for customers working in industrial and hazardous environments around the world. This portfolio includes solutions for electrical construction, lighting, industrial power, power controls and connectivity, industrial heat tracing, heating cables and more.

The South Milwaukee foundry that produces Appleton products has previously been recognised for excellence. In 2019, the facility earned the 2019 Plant Engineering Award by the American Foundry Society for innovation and commitment to continuous improvement.

Data logging for evaluation and test.

The SL2000 High-Speed Data Acquisition Unit, from Yokogawa Test & Measurement, is a ScopeCorder series product with a wide range of data logging functionalities for evaluation and test applications, including high-speed sampling and analysis. The SL2000 is a modular platform that combines the functions of a mixed signal oscilloscope and a data acquisition recorder, and is designed to capture fast signal transients and long-term trends. It is suitable for applications such as R&D, validation, and troubleshooting.

The SL2000 can be used separately or in combination with the DL950 ScopeCorder, depending on the application. No other product family on the market offers this level of flexibility in handling multi-channel measurements. With the ScopeCorder product family, Yokogawa provides a multifaceted, total solution for the high-precision mechatronics and electric power markets that is contributing to the advancement and development of new technologies and applications.

In the four years since the DL950 ScopeCorder was first brought to the market there have been many technical advances in the electric vehicle (EV), renewable energy, and other industrial fields. Today, there is an ever-greater requirement for the capability to simultaneously measure multiple parameters and for the systemization of mechatronic measurements in product development. For example, in the development of motors for industrial and EV systems, one essential test for checking and improving a product is the durability test. This test takes a long time to complete and requires a highly reliable measuring instrument and high sampling rates.

1.Enabling both high-speed sampling and multi-channel measurement.
The SL2000 performs long-duration multi-channel measurements while precisely analyzing even the most detailed aspects of waveforms. With its dual capture function, the SL2000 can perform measurements over long periods of time at speeds of up to 200 MS/s. And in situations where post-processing is required on a PC following measurement, the main unit can continue to perform measurements and has a function that allows calculations to be performed in real time. This shrinks takt time – the calculated pace at which completed units must come off the production line.
By using the integrated measurement software IS8000, it is easier to perform the long-term measurements required for durability testing, helping to improve the efficiency of product design and evaluation work. In addition, isolation measurement technology ensures the noise resistance required for durability testing in harsh environments.

2.Supporting simultaneous measurement of a wide variety of devices.
The SL2000 has eight available slots (with up to 32 channels), for which over 20 types of input modules are available to enable measurements of electrical signals, mechanical performance parameters indicated by sensors, and decoded vehicle serial bus signals. To increase the number of measurement channels, up to five SL2000 and DL950 units can be synchronized.

Applications
• Durability and reliability testing of components and vehicles that requires high sampling rates and multi-channel simultaneous measurement of analog signals and in-vehicle bus signals such as CAN and CAN FD.
• Simultaneous measurement and evaluation of temperature, vibration, and other mechanical signals that change relatively slowly as well as mechatronic and other such high-speed control signals.
• Electrical analysis and control signal evaluation.

Managing energy.

Solution reduces energy costs, carbon emissions for manufacturers.

Emerson has launched its new Energy Manager solution, a pre-engineered hardware and software offering designed to simplify industrial electricity monitoring with quick setup and intuitive operation. Ready out of the box, the Energy Manager solution monitors asset energy use in real time, allowing manufacturers to gain deeper insight into energy consumption and operating costs, lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and maximize energy and operational efficiency.

Most manufacturers, including original equipment and industrial manufacturers, consumer packaged goods companies and food and beverage producers, face mounting pressure to increase productivity while reducing energy use and environmental impact. Yet industrial machinery is energy-intensive, consuming high power even when idle. To better meet efficiency and sustainability goals, operators need the best possible visibility into their facilities’ energy use to address waste and inefficiencies.

Emerson’s Energy Manager solution provides energy measurements in real time, allowing plant managers to quickly view detailed values and see savings opportunities, such as idle consumption and peak loads. The software’s easy-to-use dashboard provides asset-specific energy use, associated costs and CO2 emissions for up to 10 end points (expandable to 50 endpoints with a license).

This level of visibility gives organizations greater control to identify idle machines and optimize machine schedules during off-peak hours, reducing electricity use across the plant floor and significantly lowering overall utility costs. Most facilities can reduce energy waste up to 10-30% and carbon emissions by up to 15-30%.

Highly scalable and easy to integrate with new or existing energy meters, the Energy Manager solution makes it easy to commission and quickly realize return-on-investment. The software is available either preinstalled on edge hardware, such as the PACSystemsTM RXi2-BP industrial PC, or as a stand-alone application that can be installed in a virtualized environment.

“Reliable, accurate monitoring of energy costs and emissions is becoming invaluable to organizations,” said Eugenio Silva, intelligent automation product manager with Emerson’s discrete automation business. “Our new Energy Manager solution gives operators, facility managers and corporate sustainability teams greater visibility and deeper understanding of energy consumption and operating costs at all times. This can better position companies to track and reach targets, comply with regulations, and reliably reduce environmental impact.”

For more extensive media and utilities monitoring, the Energy Manager can be paired with the Emerson Compressed Air Manager to provide a streamlined view of energy costs and compressed air usage of machines across a production line, factory and site.

BESS for Irish data centres.

Use of renewable energy to support the stability of grid operations in Ireland.

GridBeyond will be delivering BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) solutions to Keppel DC Dublin 1 and 2, which are located at City West and Ballycoolin, near Dublin (IRL) respectively. The two data centres are owned by Keppel DC REIT, a Singapore listed pure-play data centre REIT.

Gary Watson, Country Manager (Ireland) of Keppel DC REIT, said, “Leveraging this partnership with GridBeyond, Keppel DC REIT’s is able to take another step towards our 2030 net zero targets. We will also explore other ways to increase the use of renewable energy, such as installing on-site solar, to bolster our efforts to decarbonise our operations.”

The BESS at the two data centres will provide additional flexible capacity to the power system. By adding this flexible capacity, the BESS will help integrate more renewable energy sources into the energy mix and support the grid in times of stress for the benefit of all consumers. This will also add 8MW of flexible capacity to the grid ahead of the winter peak demand period.

The project includes the installation and management of a 2 x 2MW/2.2MWh battery at the Citywest site and a 4MW/6.1MWh battery at the Ballycoolin site. GridBeyond will manage the flexibility of the sites by connecting the batteries to its AI-powered energy technology platform, GridBeyond Point. Power from the batteries will be discharged in response to instructions from the grid operator to provide green power during times of grid stress. Historically, during times of grid stress, generation facilities, often carbon-intensive, are brought online to balance the grid. By capturing excess renewable energy from renewable sources that would otherwise be wasted the BESS will be able to provide lower carbon flexibility to the system when required.

It is also estimated that the installation of the two batteries at the two data centres will deliver a reduction of 240,000kg of CO2 per year, further advancing the two companies’ net zero agenda.

GridBeyond Regional Director for Ireland Denver Blemings said: “This project shows how data centres can play a bigger role in the energy transition. It’s great to see companies, like Keppel DC REIT, use demand response programmes to support the grid and use renewable energies in the delivery of their activities”.

Communication in energy parks.

Cepsa, one of Spain's largest integrated energy companies, operates two energy parks in the south of Spain. For years, employees at the plants have relied on Pepperl+Fuchs products to communicate with each other and document daily tasks such as maintenance. The introduction of 5G has now created new standards in terms of availability, network coverage, and latency, opening an opportunity to gradually replacing existing Smart-Ex® 02 inventory with the intrinsically safe Smart-Ex® 03 5G smartphone from Pepperl+Fuchs.

With the intrinsically safe Smart-Ex® 03, Pepperl+Fuchs presents its first 5G- and Wi-Fi 6-capable smartphone. For flexible use in public and private networks, companies and mobile workers now have a smartphone that enables and optimizes all digital application scenarios, even in harsh environments. Cepsa has been relying on the expertise of Pepperl+Fuchs and its subsidiary brand ECOM Instruments for years. More than 1,100 Smart-Ex® 02 smartphones are currently used for communication between mobile workers. In addition, the company uses more than 300 Tab-Ex® 03 tablets, which employees use to document maintenance tasks, create and check checklists, or conduct video conferences. The company is therefore taking an important step towards digitalization.

The use of 5G has several benefits for the Spanish energy company. The company has deployed two private mobile networks in its energy parks. These technologies serve as use case enablers, making Cepsa a pioneer of this type of technology in the energy sector.

The 5G mobile communications standard offers industry a decisive advantage in the form of campus networks. These private 5G networks are made available to companies in cooperation with the network operator of their choice or set up individually for them. As a result, these networks are protected against unauthorized access from outside and at the same time guarantee the availability of bandwidth.

5G also enables network slicing. The available bandwidth of the network is divided into different channels, known as slices, which in turn can be prioritized. For example, the company defines a slice for critical communication and ensures that the bandwidth is always available in an emergency.

In addition, 5G scores with extremely low latency times, which makes push-to-talk applications even more effective since Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) is an important part of communication within Cepsa, which is available securely and uninterrupted with the Smart-Ex® 03 from Pepperl+Fuchs. In contrast to analog means of communication, the connection runs via the mobile network. With 5G, communication is therefore even more efficient, faster, and without delay.
