Building security and safety.

The increasing demand for comfort, safety and energy efficiency in facility management is leading to rapidly progressing digitalisation in buildings. Considering that 90% of buildings are owned properties, wireless solutions are cost-efficient and ideal for retrofitting as they can be easily integrated in existing building automation systems.

For increased building security, SAG Smart Line mortice locks can prevent door motions (actuations of the latch or bolt). The wireless SAG Smart Line locks use an energy harvesting switch from ZF with the established EnOcean RF standard. The ZF energy harvesting switch generates the required energy for RF protocol transmission by mechanical actuation. As a wireless and batteryfree solution and due to the very small and compact size, these switches from ZF offer high flexibility to fulfill individual customer requirements. Hence, these switches are completely maintenance-free and a smart, energy-saving solution for building automation systems. Besides the EnOcean RF standard which is used by SAG Smart Line Door Locks, the ZF energy harvesting switch can also be applied with protocols like KNX-RF, Bluetooth or customer-specific solutions.

By replacing existing mortice locks in a building with SAG Smart Line door locks, doors can be quickly retrofitted at low cost during ongoing operation or integrated into the building automation system. Based on the transmitted RF protocol, information about the room usage can be generated to optimise resources like heating, air conditioning or light. Early warning alerts can also be triggered in case of break-in, fire or water damage which can be controlled by these sensors. In addition, public toilet facilities can display whether they are vacant/occupied, or alternatively track usage to allow preparation of cleaning scheduling.

The ongoing COVID pandemic has also increased awareness of the health and wellness of employees, which includes monitoring and controlling air quality, lighting levels, temperature, and occupancy levels. “In an age where self-powered wireless is the obvious choice – also due to environmental issues and costs of copper wire or battery replacement – EnOcean Alliance is spearheading the drive towards an energy-efficient, healthier and safer world”, says Graham Martin, CEO and Chairman of the EnOcean Alliance.

The organization offers the advantages of an extensive and established ecosystem of interoperable self-powered wireless sensor solutions that are available to intelligent buildings worldwide. Based on the energy harvesting technology using movement, light or temperature differences as energy source for battery-free switches and self-powered wireless sensors, these solutions help optimize the utilization of buildings, create new service models and make buildings more flexible, energy-efficient and altogether more cost-effective. EnOcean wireless networks have been installed in more than 1,000,000 buildings worldwide, making it the most widespread and most field-tested wireless building automation standard in the world.

Connector enables intelligent data transformation.

The EnOcean IoT Connector is an ideal link between maintenance-free IoT data from energy harvesting sensors and IoT applications that makes the integration of EnOcean products easier than ever before. The IoT Connector translates sensor outputs into ready-to-use data for IoT applications and data driven businesses.

Commenting on the recent launch, Marian Hönsch, Product Manager at EnOcean said: “Data is critical to understanding, measuring and improving facility management processes and procedures. Increasingly, data needs to be analysed to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, security and COVID-19 regulations. Facility and Corporate Real Estate Managers are gradually becoming more dependent on data analysis to identify utilisation patterns, trim costs and make buildings into better places for work. This new solution from EnOcean paves the way by enabling collection of data from billions of sensors in buildings, using energy harvesting wireless sensors to collect data in a secure and maintenance-free way. The essential requirements of quick onboarding, broad applicability and water-tight security are embodied in a new IoT Connector that translates sensor outputs into ready-to-use data for IoT applications and data driven businesses.”

One key feature of the IoT Connector software is that it decodes the IoT data from the EnOcean Protocol and translates it into ready-to-use data in JSON format to be used in the actual application. Algorithms are needed to unravel the data and to make it available for customer applications in the right form. Customer applications consume IoT data in a “key-value pairs“ format, such as JSON. A key-value pair consists of related elements: a key, which is a constant that defines the dataset (temperature, humidity or ventilation), for example, and a value, which is a variable that belongs to the dataset (e.g. 20 °C, 80 %, level 1/2/3). Easy adoption by IoT users is enhanced by implementing JSON data that can be exchanged with an MQTT broker or Microsoft Azure IoT Hub.

In the typical model, the IoT Connector is deployed in an existing connectivity infrastructure: either in edge devices or third-party clouds. Typical use cases are centralised controls such as lighting and building automation. With the new model, the data is processed directly at the final destination like a cloud or server from the customer. For example, this could be Microsoft Azure cloud. Typical use cases are data analytics and IoT applications and the major advantage is that the client has total control over the data flow. With this new model there is no third party or third storage location involved when transferring the data from sensor to cloud. Customers decide what happens with their data, whether visualised, analysed or archived. Here, the IoT Connector is a containerised application and available for deployment at the Docker Hub among others, including all updates. The use of cloud computing relieves the load on the local infrastructure and allows new data-heavy applications to be created, stimulating ideas from customers for new applications.

An easy and cost-effective way to incorporate the EnOcean IoT Connector into IoT applications is by leveraging existing building infrastructures. The infrastructure can easily be upgraded to send EnOcean IoT data, for example with the combination of an EnOcean USB stick and Wi-Fi® access points from Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. Also, data from existing EnOcean buildings can directly be forwarded to the IoT Connector in raw format (ESP3 – EnOcean Serial Protocol 3). The Aruba access points support the EnOcean USB stick without need for additional software. Furthermore, they talk directly to the IoT Connector running as part of the infrastructure or the final data destination, so no additional gateways are needed. With this complete scenario, customers have exclusive control over the data flow.

It is a vital solution in helping facility managers to understand, measure and improve their processes and procedures, unlock inefficiencies, improve decision-making and sharpen their operations.

Energy harvesting anniversary.

EnOcean is celebrating 20 years of leadership in energy harvesting technology. The company launched its first battery-free, wireless switch based on a kinetic energy harvesting module in 2001. Since then, EnOcean has constantly expanded its portfolio of kinetically powered modules. First introduced 20 years ago, the PTM (Push Button Transceiver) modules have established themselves as the international industry standard and are at the heart of every self-powered radio-based switch. The modules combine innovation, know-how and pioneering spirit and thus support EnOcean's role as market leader in this field.

"I’m proud that EnOcean absolutely lives up to its status as pioneer and innovator of energy harvesting. Over 20 years our spirit of innovation has proved its worth and remains undimmed today. We see that through our activities the market is growing and energy harvesting is taking on an increasingly important role. With the PTM module we have set a standard that is second to none,"
says Andreas Schneider, CEO EnOcean.

In spring 2001, EnOcean launched wireless switches that gain their energy from the press of a button at electrical engineering trade fairs in Germany. These switches quickly took on a pioneering role worldwide. Equipped with piezo-based energy converters, a module concept was developed that can be integrated into global switch designs. Just as an RJ45 plug grew from being a telephone socket to a worldwide standard for LAN cabling and today practically forms the backbone for the internet, the first fully functional modules based on a piezo element have established themselves over time as the worldwide PTM radio module standard with an electrodynamic energy converter. Thanks to EnOcean’s pioneering work over 20 years, several million wireless switches have now been installed, delivering a wireless telegram at the press of a switch – no batteries or cables are required. EnOcean modules with the original PTM form factor today are the industry standard. Already at the original design stage and with every innovation, EnOcean is guided by the needs of switch manufacturers from all over the world and incorporates their know-how into the further development of the modules.

The conscious decision to offer a flexible module paved the way for worldwide acceptance among switch manufacturers, installers and end users. Keeping the switch insert separate and placing the rockers on top provides maximum flexibility for switch designs and applications. Advanced features such as a Near Field Communication (NFC) interface allow installers to perform on-demand installation directly on site, quickly and securely.

But the company has not only developed further in terms of product technology. After starting with manual production, the modules are now manufactured on fully automated production lines with consistently high quality. The company continuously improves the products and incorporates feedback from its customers and users into innovative products such as solar-powered IoT wireless sensor modules in the identical original PTM form factor.

The switch modules from EnOcean not only support the radio standard of the same name managed by the EnOcean Alliance (ISO / IEC 14543-3-10 / 11) in the frequencies 868 MHz, 902 MHz and 928 MHz, but also Bluetooth® and Zigbee in the frequency of 2.4 GHz. The EnOcean wireless standard is ideally suited for building automation, smart homes and IoT applications due to its high reliability and a radio range of up to 30 metres. By supporting three leading standards, the company presents a constantly growing portfolio with self-powered radio modules for every use case.

Helped by partners
EnOcean has a global presence and has been able to constantly expand its cooperation with international switch manufacturers. Starting with Peha/Honeywell as the first switch partner, EnOcean now works with over 50 switch manufacturers such as Busch-Jaeger, Eltako, Feller, GIRA, Jung, Niko, NodOn, Vimar and many more. The company has thus proven itself to be a reliable partner for the industry. Thanks to the constantly growing partner network, EnOcean is able to meet the most diverse requirements in design, form and colour around the globe.

Expansion & development for customer needs
The PTM product family is constantly being expanded and adapted to the needs of customers. In addition to the possibility of encrypting the radio signals, NFC for configuring the module on site via the EnOcean NFC app is being successively introduced for all product variants. Through partnerships with Aruba and Cisco, the pushbuttons can be used as control elements for light, shutter and ventilation control, and can easily be integrated into IoT cloud solutions with intelligent data pre-processing without major infrastructure investments. And to round off the portfolio for standard applications such as the familiar two-way circuit for lighting, EnOcean is working on a module that takes up the concept of the first demonstrator from 2001 again: throwing the rocker turns on the light, without batteries and without cables.

Hyperware smart buildings.

Aruba has joined the EnOcean Alliance as a participant member. When used together, the Aruba Wi-Fi infrastructure and EnOcean energy harvesting wireless solutions enable customers to create hyperaware smart buildings that are cognizant of, and responsive to, their changing operating environment and occupant needs.

Aruba Access Point
Aruba, is a leading provider of AI-powered network infrastructure for campus, data center, branch and remote worker applications. Aruba delivers a cloud experience at the edge that can be consumed either as a service in the cloud or on-premises, as a managed service delivered through Aruba partners, or via network as a service through HPE GreenLake.

The EnOcean Alliance is an international association of over 400 leading companies in the building and IT industries founded in 2008. The non-profit organization is committed to enabling and promoting interoperable, maintenance-free and proven eco-systems based on the wireless EnOcean radio standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3-10/11). The EnOcean Alliance eco-system offers more than 5.000 multi-vendor interoperable sensors enabling data collection for multiple applications, such as room or desk/chair occupancy, temperature and air quality, energy usage and restroom usage.

EnOcean Alliance member IoT devices are the eyes and ears of smart buildings. By securely interfacing those IoT devices with new and existing Aruba Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 Access Points via a plug-in 800/900MHz radio, building control and business applications can become hyperaware of their operating environments. This information can be used to better model cloud-based digital twins, and to optimize human activity monitoring, organizational redesign, augmented reality, human productivity, and occupant health and safety.
EnOcean European Starter Kit

"A building becomes smart by virtue of being instrumented with IoT devices so applications are cognizant of the contextual status of the environment, occupants, energy requirements, service needs, security, and safety,” said Michael R. Tennefoss, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Aruba. “The richer the set of available IoT data, the more cognizant and adaptive the building and associated digital twins can become. The goal is to make hyperawareness simple and inexpensive, and that is what the mash up between Aruba and the EnOcean Alliance achieves. An inexpensive 800/900MHz plug-in radio brings existing and new Aruba customers access to thousands of IoT devices, including BACNet and multiple other protocol gateways, and software applications (both local and cloud based.) In turn, Alliance members gain access to Aruba’s installed base of education, enterprise, government, healthcare, hospitality, industrial, manufacturing, retail, and transportation customers.”

Graham Martin, Chairman and CEO of the EnOcean Alliance, continues: “Our collaboration opens up exciting new market opportunities for the Alliance members and the Aruba community by combining Aruba’s extensive network power and the flexibility of energy harvesting wireless sensors. The simplicity of the solution makes it now possible for facility, IT and other managers to easily add services, collecting data from “peel and stick” sensors across an entire building without pulling any new cables nor ever having to change a battery.”
