The Rosemount™ 3408 Level Transmitter, from Emerson, is a non-contacting radar device designed to optimise ease-of-use at every touchpoint, leading to increased site and worker safety and enhanced plant performance. It is a versatile level measurement solution, suitable for use in a wide range of industries and applications, such as chemical storage, mixing tanks and open air applications.

“The new generation of engineers expect modern automation technology to be very easy to implement, operate and maintain,” said Thense Korsbo, director of product management for Emerson’s radar level measurement business. “The onus is therefore on us to provide solutions that simplify operator tasks as much as possible, especially in safety-critical applications such as overfill prevention, and this was Emerson’s focus when designing the Rosemount 3408. This optimised ease-of-use will help organisations improve plant efficiency, reach their production targets and achieve the highest levels of safety.”

While the benefits of radar level measurement are widely acknowledged, leading to the technology’s fast-growing adoption across multiple industries, radars are still sometimes perceived as being complex to commission, operate and maintain. Addressing this concern, the device provides a range of functions that reduce complexity throughout its lifecycle, including a highly intuitive interface, Bluetooth® wireless technology remote capabilities, predictive alerts, in-situ verification, data historian and an upgradeable design.

The user interface provides clear pictorial instructions, allowing operators to be easily guided through installation, commissioning, proof-testing, operation and maintenance. This increased ease-of-use gives process and manufacturing organisations the confidence to replace time-consuming manual procedures, thereby helping to increase safety and maximise productivity.

The new device is based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology, which enables extremely accurate and reliable measurement, even in challenging process environments. It is also suitable for use in critical safety applications such as overfill prevention, as it is Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2-certified and designed according to the International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 61508 standard relating to functional safety.

Emerson’s proprietary Smart Meter Verification software provides an easy means of verifying the health of the device, without interrupting the process. Bluetooth with HART.

Many modern mobile devices only support Bluetooth Low Energy. iOS mobile devices in particular only support Bluetooth Low Energy. The world’s first Bluetooth Low Energy HART Modem has been launched by ProComSol.

According to Jeffrey Dobos, President of ProComSol, Ltd, “As new communication technology is adopted and grows, industrial users want (and need) to take advantage of it. Bluetooth 4.0, which includes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), offers many advantages over older Bluetooth standards making it an ideal technology for mobile device communications.”

The HM-BLE, HART Modem, Bluetooth Low Energy takes full advantage of the low energy features of the Bluetooth 4.0 standard. The modem contains a rechargeable Li-Ion battery that will last for days on a single charge. The lower energy demand on the connected mobile device also allows longer device life between recharges.

The HM-BLE, in combination with a Smart Device Communicator App on a mobile device becomes a full functioned, DD based, HART Communicator. A HART communicator that uses DD’s can perform full configurations of Valves, Multi-Variable devices, and complex devices such as Radar Level and Coriolis Flow meters.

Because the connection between the HM-BLE HART modem and the hand held device is wireless, user safety and comfort is ensured. There are no wires to tangle or trip over. The user can configure hard to reach HART devices safely from the ground. In bad weather the user can stay comfortable in a convenient location and still perform necessary work on the HART device.

New possibilities for industrial wireless solutions.

A new, upgraded version of their popular Anybus Wireless Bridge has been introduced by HMS. The Anybus Wireless Bridge II supports up to 400 meters of reliable wireless communication, and can communicate via both Bluetooth or WLAN. It is ideal for replacing Ethernet cabling in hard-to-reach or hazardous locations.

Cable replacement or access point
By using the Anybus Wireless Bridge II, automation engineers can achieve new and smarter network infrastructures. Often used as an Ethernet cable replacement (point-to-point communication), the Wireless Bridge II can also be used as an access point for several WLAN/Bluetooth nodes such as smartphones or tablets within range. In the process, savings are achieved thanks to the reduced amount of Ethernet cabling.

What’s new?
The new Anybus Wireless Bridge II supports a longer wireless range (400 meters, 437 yards) and an even more powerful integrated wireless antenna. It is easily set up via push-button configuration or via the new integrated web interface. Anybus Wireless Bridge II is built on the same wireless technology as the family member Anybus® Wireless Bolt™, a connection point for on-machine mounting which HMS released in 2016, making them able to communicate seamlessly, opening up for even more innovative wireless system solutions.

Solving network problems for system integrators
By connecting industrial devices and networks over a wireless link, the Anybus Wireless Bridge II makes life easier for system integrators and automation engineers needing to create connections through e.g. hazardous areas, hard-to-reach locations, or moving installations where cables are not desirable. The Anybus Wireless Bridge II is a proven solution to bridge popular industrial Ethernet standards such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, BACnet/IP and Modbus TCP and provides users with a robust and maintenance-free wireless connection.

The product comes with two M12 connectors for power and network connectivity and is an IP65 protection class rating.

Industrial quality
“We see a clear trend that wireless communication is gaining more and more acceptance in the conservative industrial market,” comments Martin Falkman, Product Manager at HMS. "There are many wireless connectivity solutions on the market today, but few can offer the reliable and sturdy connections required for industrial use. The Anybus Wireless products for Ethernet have been very popular on the market for several years, and with Anybus Wireless Bridge II, we are now excited to be able to offer connectivity over a longer range, more reliable wireless communication links as well as easier set-up procedures.”

Testing Bluetooth!

Anritsu Corporation has upgraded their MT8852B Bluetooth Test Set to support the latest Bluetooth Core Specification version 5. The MT8852B is the market leading RF measuring instrument for design proving and production test of a wide range of products that integrate Bluetooth technology. It supports Basic Rate (BR), Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) measurement of transmit power, frequency, modulation, and receiver sensitivity required by Bluetooth RF test specifications
In December 2016, Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) announced the launch of Bluetooth 5, designed to meet the needs of an evolving industry that demands a global wireless standard to provide simple, secure connectivity. This latest version of Bluetooth focuses on new communications technologies for implementing longer range communications at faster speeds while maintaining low power consumption to support smartphones and IoT applications. And with this comes the requirement for measurement solutions that support these new specifications.

These new options for the MT8852B support the full range of PHY layer (RF) tests required by the new Bluetooth 5 specifications for designing and manufacturing Bluetooth devices and SoC, especially tests for 2-Mbps Low Energy PHY (2LE), which greatly improves battery life, and for Bluetooth Long Range (BLR), which extends communications over longer ranges of several hundred meters.

Although the MT8852B has supported the earlier Bluetooth Low Energy specification, this upgrade adds new measurement options for the 2LE and BLR specifications. New test cases can run as part of test scripts to simplify test-case creation and cut test times. The MT8852B implements 2LE and BLR measurements by direct connection and can control the device under test (DUT) either via USB, 2-wire RS-232 HCI Direct Test Mode (DTM), or USB–Serial conversion adapter interfaces.
